Age Guidelines For Summer Programs: Our librarians have planned a variety of activities for children of all ages. Each event is carefully designed with a particular age group in mind. Please observe age requirements listed.

For ages birth to 5 years old. The Little Sparks Summer Reading Program helps parents and children build important early literacy skills. Stop by the Library to register and pick up an activity sheet to share with your child. Complete the activities on the sheet and bring it back to the Library and receive a prize. This program runs for the months of July and August. Participate for one or both months.

Experiment with reading this summer! You’re encouraged to read (or listen to) the books you want. Record your reading adventures in your very own Scientist’s Log! Then visit the Library and share the stories you've read with a librarian. A prize will be given out each week to encourage you to explore the world of books. Children, in preschool through Grade 5, can register at any time during the program’s run.

For Teens Spark a Reaction & Make A Summer @ Your Library Monday, June 30 - Monday, August 18

For grades 6 & up. Teens, discover the summer reading program that has been upgraded to include more than just reading. Teens will have the opportunity to earn “badges” by completing tasks such as creating a meal, writing a poem, composing a song, attending a library program, and many more. The DCL will award prizes for the most badges earned as well as the most creative project. Teens may still participate in the traditional reading club as well.

8 weeks, 5,000 books. Can it be done? If participants of the Children’s Summer Reading program, “Fizz! Boom! READ!”, read a combined total of 5,000 books before Monday, August 18, Miss Jenny will voluntarily dye her hair. What color will it be? You get to choose!

Kick-Off Party Monday, June 30 @ 2:00-4:00 pm Summer reading begins with crafts, face painting, and more! Parents can learn about our Summer Reading Program, which encourages children to read. Children in preschool through 5th Grade can register for our Children’s Summer Reading Program.

End of Summer Party Monday, August 18 @ 2:00-4:00 pm For children in preschool through 5th Grade who are registered for our Summer Reading Program at the DCL! Find out if DCL summer readers reached this year’s goal. No registration necessary for either event.

DCL Crafts @ Jamesville Beach Geared for ages 5 - 10! Looking for something different to do this summer? Join the Library crew at Jamesville Beach and make some fun crafts that you’ll simply love! DeWitt Community Library will be offering awesome crafts to beachgoers at Jamesville Beach Park. Children’s Librarian Jennifer Burke and Paralibrarian for Children’s Services Kelly Sickler will be hosting four fun sessions for ages 5-10. Come for one or all four! The DCL will provide all supplies, except for t-shirts to dye. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Parking fees are not included. Come ready to participate and help your child develop essential early literacy skills as we share books, enjoy music and movement, and sing songs and nursery rhymes. Each session lasts 15 - 20 minutes, followed by playtime. TODDLER TIME! CHEMISTRY FUN FOR KIDS Wednesday, July 16 @ 2:00 pm For grades K - 5. Enjoy several activities designed to inspire all ages to enjoy the science of chemistry. Learn how to make slime. FIZZ! BOOM! CRAFTS Perler Bead Crafts

Tuesday, July 29 at 12:30pm For ages 5 and up. Design your own colorful creation using Perler Beads. Create your own design using these soft, plastic beads and pegboards and we’ll fuse it together for you. Registration required.

FORENSIC SCIENCE FOR KIDS Tuesday, August 12 @ 2:00 pm For grades 3 - 6. The Town of DeWitt Police Department shows students some practical applications of everyday science. A brief history of the use of physical evidence in law enforcement is followed by demonstrations/examples of how science is used in criminal investigations. No Registration Necessary.

ADVENTURES AT THE LIBRARY! The Amazing Honeybee Tuesday, July 15 @ 1:00 pm For ages 6 & up. Honeybees are incredible creatures. Join hobby beekeeper and DCL librarian Emily Wormuth for a hands-on discussion about how bees make honey, how beekeepers take it out of the hive, and what you can do to protect these amazing creatures. She’ll bring some of her honey for you to taste, and you’ll have the chance to try on a beekeeper’s suit. Registration Required.

The Summer Sky Thursday, July 24 @ 1:00 pm For ages 8 & up. Do you know what to look for in the summer sky? Join us for a hands-on program as local amateur astronomer Dave Wormuth discusses the skies, telescopes and astronomy websites. If weather permits, we’ll go outside and look at the sun through a special lens. Registration Required.

Recommended for ages 3 & up! Live zoo animals will visit the Library with an educator from the Rosamond Gifford Zoo at Burnet Park. Fascinating facts and close-up views of the creatures will be featured. No registration necessary.

TEEN PAGE Digital Readers’ Theatre

Saturday, July 26 @ 1:30 - 3:30 pm For ages 8 - 16. Take on the role of popular book characters in the DCL’s Digital Readers’ Theatre. Read the script, play a part, and have your voice recorded live. Learn about digital audio recording, performance, and podcasting as you create your informally staged production of a popular book or two. Each performance will be recorded and a free CD will be made available for all to keep. Space is limited; registration required.

Fridays @ 6:00 - 7:30 pm June 27 & August 15 For ages 10 - 16. Join us for an evening of Minecraft play. Share building together or on your own. Meet new people and engage in play together. The DCL will have a limited amount of accounts and computers so feel free to use and bring your own laptops.

Point Pleasant, West Virginia, was a sleepy little town until people reported seeing a strange, huge bat-like creature hanging out at a local abandoned TNT factory. It appeared in yards, on porches, and even chased people in their cars. What could it be?

Everyone has heard of the famous Loch Ness monster in Scotland, affectionately known as Nessie. But just about every country in the world claims its own lake monster, including New York’s Champ. What could they be?

Registration is encouraged for these popular programs! Cheryl Pula returns to the DCL for more exciting “moments in history” programs. She previously presented “Crime Spree,” a look at famous unsolved mysteries about Lizzie Borden, the Lindbergh Kidnapping, and Black Dahlia, and “Battle Royale” about turning points in the Revolutionary, Civil, and Second World Wars.

Marvel at the excavation, preservation, and restoration of the three bay dry dock complex where canal boats were built and repaired, and the reconstruction of the blacksmith shop, sawmill, and mule stable.

Murder Mystery Party The Foxhunt Friday, July 25 @ 7:00 pm At a country estate, a select gathering of friends and acquaintances celebrate the arrival of summer with a traditional foxhunt. While the fox escapes death, one of the riders does not. Who would want to off the congenial host? Registration Required. You’re invited to a mystery at the DCL! Look for clues, interrogate suspects, and solve a crime. For ages 18 & up! Are you a fan of whodunnits and crime solving? Discover motive, means and opportunity as you set out to solve the crime. Additional clues will be revealed as the evening progresses. There’s plenty of time to solve the crime, so be sure to enjoy the provided refreshments. A good time will be had by all!

JULY 14—Shade Gardening Learn what plants work best in shaded conditions. Master Gardener Doreen Todorov will share tips and tricks. AUGUST 11—Container Gardening Discover the different types of containers and what plants work best in them. Art & Poetry Community Art Project Saturday, July 12 | 11:00 am to 4:30 pm Help create a symbolic tree painting. After a brief tutorial, participants will work with the artist one-on-one for approx. 20 minutes. The canvas will rotate among area libraries and upwards of 50 people may be participating in the finished project. See the flyer in the library for more details surrounding this event and post-event activities. For ages 17 & up! Instructed by: Fine artist Maria Rizzo received the 2014 individual Artist Commission Grant from the CNY Arts 2014 Decentralization Program to engage the Onondaga community in a special interactive art project that will promote nature and community involvement.

Love Poetry Tuesday, July 15 @ 7:00 pm Participants will learn about the poetry of love and will be encouraged to write a love poem. For ages 18 & up! Instructed by: Martin Willitts Jr. is a retired librarian living in Syracuse, NY who has won numerous poetry awards and has appeared in numerous chapbooks and poetry anthologies.
