Shades of Autumn

Siobhan Haug, International Artistic Director for Toni & Guy and the current British Colour Technician of the Year, looks at three key looks from her winning collection, which reflect this season’s colour trends.

The model’s porcelain skin has a peach undertone which supports the warm shades within the colour, creating an enhanced glow against her skin. The depth and texture of colour make her hair appear fuller and more detailed.

This look has a sensual, modern feel. It uses colour placement to follow the contours of the model’s face. The look is finished with a dark, romantic swirl of colour bending around the outline of the model’s face, exaggerating the bends and draping through the hair.

Autumn 2022 / Autumn Colour Trends 06 / Concept Hair I WWW.CONCEPTHAIRMAG.CO.UK

These emerald curls are deep, twisted tunnels of lightreflective tone. The curls feel luxurious and well-conditioned. To create light reflection and maximum shine, I was inspired to go darker and deeper with the hues of green.

The roots were coloured with a tone that combined copper and deep red. The underneath was colour blocked to add strength to the silhouette. Using a wide textured weave, tones of magenta and purple were overlayed and separated with bendy rollers to divide the woven colour.

I used pivoting triangular sections to add depth and light in equal parts. I used a low-oxidant developer with the pre-lightener to provide a gentle lift that would support the green and then a quasi-permanent to add shine and gloss to the curls. The toner was done in two parts; firstly to neutralise the orange undertone in the hair and provide the beginning of a green base.

THE TECHNIQUE

ROMANTIC RED

THE TECHNIQUE

EMERALD GREEN

Greens are often matte and less light-reflective, however, by working with a vibrant direct dye I achieved maximum shine and longevity.

I worked with a vertical section on the model’s left side, and a vertical section plus the top half of the fringe on her right. I parted each section horizontally, working from the bottom to the top, blending pre-lightener all the way through the ends. On the model’s right side, I blended one inch away from the root and incorporated the top layer of the fringe. On the opposite side, I took the application lower and applied a deeper tone. Once an even lift was achieved, I coloured everything with gold toner. To encourage a blended feel, I dried the hair and then re-toned the blend areas using a slightly deeper version of the first toner.

THE TECHNIQUE

This look was inspired by designer Ricardo Tisci’s autumn/winter collection for Burberry. I used elements of inspiration from Tisci’s clothing and recreated it within the model’s hair. For example, her velvet black hair forms a dark silhouette underneath the eccentric details of gold. Then sleeves of colour-blocked tones fall through the lengths of the hair, finishing with black fringing underneath the steps to outline her face.

And Relax…

WE OFFER GREAT PRODUCTS

WE CREATE A RELAXING ATMOSPHERE

The backwash experience is one of the key points in the client journey. David Nicholson, Director of the Rainbow Room International salon in Royal Exchange Square, Glasgow shares how his team ensures clients get the ultimate backwash service.

Our backwash is in a separate area to the main salon. The main salon is busy and can be loud, while, in contrast, the backwash area is quiet and calming, so that clients can truly unwind there. To further provide the backwash area with a relaxing atmosphere, we add small touches like candles or diffusers, and we always consider the lighting and music within the area. We also ensure the backwash chairs provide the utmost comfort to clients.

“Clients love to have their hair washed with smellingbeautiful-products”

he backwash is a significant part of the client’s customer service journey within the salon. It allows clients to really relax, unwind and enjoy a head massage and any treatments they would like to add on to their services. Our apprentices are integral to every client’s backwash experience.

This is how myself and my team make the backwash experience as memorable and enjoyable as possible for clients.

WE UNDERSTAND THE IMPORTANCE OF GAUGING WHETHER CLIENTS WANT CONVERSATION

OUR SISTER SALON HAS ADDED A COLOUR BAR TO THE BACKWASH AREA

The backwash is a great time to continue the conversation with clients and to talk about the products we are using on their hair. However, it’s important to try and gauge if the client does want to talk at the backwash. Some clients may be open to continuing the conversation but some may want a quiet and peaceful experience, where they can lay back and just enjoy a few minutes of escapism. We train our team to get a feel for what the client wants from their initial responses to any conversation, which allows the team member looking after them to set the scene for the rest of the time at the backwash.

ALL CLIENTS ARE TREATED TO A HEAD MASSAGE

435

With all conditioning treatments at the backwash we treat our clients to a head massage. The backwash experience is one of the highlights of a salon visit for most clients. At Rainbow Room International we provide our clients with a shiatsu head massage, which, as well as being relaxing, helps any treatments to penetrate deeper into the hair. All our apprentices are trained in the art of shiatsu massage.

The Interview

Owner of the supercool Hare & Bone salon in takeBurnettFitzroviaLondon’sdistrict,Samhaslearnttorisksandfollow

CH: What were the biggest lessons you learnt at the start of your career?

Sam Burnett: My mum was a hairdresser, so I would hang out and assist her when she was doing home appointments in the evenings. When I was old enough, I had a Saturday job in a salon, and at 16 I secured an apprenticeship at a Mayfair salon, working with celebrity hairdresser, Denise McAdam.

Autumn 2022 / Interview 18 / Concept Hair I WWW.CONCEPTHAIRMAG.CO.UK

Risk Taker

Concept Hair: Tell us about your early training.

SB: The importance of communication and connection. I was a young boy from South London and quickly had to learn how to read a room of people who were not my usual company. I had to articulate and express myself in a manner clients could understand, not just my friends from school.

CH: How do you encourage the less experienced members of your team to SB:succeed?Ibeginby building their confidence and self-belief. I remember being that person on the team when I started my apprenticeship and I wouldn’t be where I am if others hadn’t given me the opportunity to believe in myself. At Hare & Bone we heavily invest our time and money into training all our team members. We encourage assistants to enter as many competitions as possible, and once they have secured their NVQ qualifications they move on to the Hare & Bone Diploma, and then spend two days with our Artistic Director, Jamie Benny, on client experience training. We involve them in photoshoots and session work, and we use our membership of The Fellowship to nurture their technical skills, self-awareness and creativity.

CH: What advice would you offer someone entering hairdressing on how to carve out a successful career?

@hareandbone

CH: How would you describe Hare & Bone and what makes it different?

CH: You were working for a major high street salon brand when you decided to set up your own business — was it a big decision to go it alone?

SB: I entered, and finalised, for London Hairdresser of the Year in the British Hairdressing Awards before the salon had opened, so that created noise around the launch. But I believe it was the editorial campaign that we shot that captured people’s attention. We shot the campaign like a fashion brand and created a billboard effect on the salon windows while the building was being renovated. We also filmed the shoot and heavily focussed on digital PR and marketing in the lead-up to the opening.

CH: How did you create a buzz around Hare & Bone?

SB: Firstly, find a really good salon that prioritises education. Don’t rush your career, take it all in and enjoy each phase.

SB: Yes, it was easily one of the biggest decisions I’ve ever had to make. I had been with the brand for 14 years and I think it took me two years to finally make the decision. It was a tough one, but my intuition was guiding me, I knew I had to take a leap of faith.

“Don’t rush your career, take it all in and enjoy each phase”

extured hair seems daunting to many hairdressers, however, once you know how to cut and style it, the opportunities are endless and it is a joy to work with. I believe all hairdressers should be educated about textured hair. It’s about being inclusive and it’s also a great addition to any skill set.

Heat can seriously damage hair and textured hairis more prone to breakage, so it is extremely importantto limit the use of heated appliances. If you do use ahairdryer or straighteners, always use a heat-protectionspray — this creates a barrier between the follicles andthe appliance.

4B: This hair has a Z-shaped curl pattern and is particularly prone to breakage— with this in mind, do not stretch this hair type while it's dry. Use moisturising conditioner to help make the hair more pliable. Make sure you detangle this type of afro hair by using a wide-tooth comb and a whole lot of water and conditioner.

TYPE 3 – CURLY

3B: These curls are slightly tighter than 3a — you could slide a pen neatly into one. Many clients fall between 3a and 3b. This curl type is also prone to frizz and is extremely dry. Apply gels that contain a humectant (an agent that attracts moisture from the air) on wet hair, that way you reduce frizz and create better-defined curls.

1

2

3A: These curls are large, bouncy and loose. This curl pattern can be mostly tamed but too much fiddling with the hair can result in the hair becoming extremely frizzy. Use a spray-on leave-in conditioner to refresh these curls.

DON’T HEATEDOVERUSEAPPLIANCES

4A: These curls have a tight S pattern and a very slim width. It is very dense and has a lot of volume. The best way to keep this or any other type 4 hair moisturised is to use a moisturiser before a hair wash. This will also make it easier to detangle the hair.

4

While with many hair types its common to cut hair when it is damp, it’s much easier to cut textured hair when it's dry. If you cut it while wet, the chances are you’ll end up removing too much hair due to shrinkage and as a result, will end up with an uneven or disconnected cut. Cutting when dry and fully detangled gives a true view and results in a fantastic cut every time.

THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF TEXTURED HAIR

These are the main types of curly hair.

Textured Hair / Autumn 2022

Always cut hair in line with how the client wearsit. For those who normally wear their hair straight, cut the hair when styled straight, and for those clients whowear their curls naturally, it’s best to cut when dry and inits naturally curly state.

3C: These are tight corkscrew curls. These curls have beautiful volume but they can look dry so to give them a beautiful softness, try a sulphate-free shampoo. Deep conditioning the hair is also a must.

When it comes to textured hair, you simply cannot cut the hair with anything less than super-sharp scissors. Not only will this help define the cut and keep the shape of the look, sharp scissors will also prevent any snagging or damage to the hair.

TYPE 4 — TIGHTLY CURLED

4C: This hair type is a mixture of an S and a Z-shaped curl pattern. The curls are even more compact and experience about 75% shrinkage when wet. Keeping this hair type moisturised at all times is vital.

Classics Made Contemporary

THE POMPADOUR

“For a contemporary take on textured hair, it’s great to cut in some shapes”

THE FRENCH CROP

The French crop is a modern classic, and with this look, I’ve given it a really strong, contemporary feel. This was achieved by using a scissor-over-comb technique for softness — for a more rigid look you can use clippers working the sides and back down into a fade. What defines this look is the difference in length between the top of the hair, which is longer and more textured than the sides and back, and a blunt fringe, which is the main focal point.

This is a modern, sleek take on a timeless classic. It is achieved by using a scissor-over-comb technique, creating graduation to support the top section of hair. The sides and back can either be taken short using a scissor-over-comb technique or you can personalise the haircut by taking it to the skin with clippers. The key here is not to create disconnection but to make a seamless blend, so the sides can be slicked back from the temple, while still supporting the top section of hair.

TEXTURED SHAPES

Certain looks never go out of fashion, but it’s always good to give these classics a modern twist to make sure they stay relevant. We asked Matrix Ambassador and barbering maestro, Christian Wiles, to share his contemporary take on four classic styles.

Textured hair is often left to its natural growth shape, but for a contemporary take on textured hair, it’s great to cut in some shapes. To create the volume, comb the hair out using a hair pick. Continue to work the pick throughout the haircut and, using a freehand technique with the scissors, build the desired shape and structure to the haircut. You can also work clippers through the hair using a freehand technique to create a sharper more structured look.

If the scalp is dehydrated, the hair bulbs could be dry and therefore not in the fittest state to form and grow healthy hair. When dehydrated, the bulb deforms, which in turn affects the way the hair forms and grows. The result is weak hair without a chance to hold its own against chemicals and day-to-day wear and tear. Recommend a home care regimen which includes products that treat the scalp as well as the hair. A dry scalp should be treated with a mask at least once a week and moisturised every day. My favourite treatment for scalp health is Malibu C Scalp Wellness.

When we are unwell, it often affects the quality of our hair. Think of the scalp papilla as the end of the line in terms of delivering nutrients via the blood. If during consultation your client mentions unexplained deterioration in the condition of their hair, it may be worth asking if there are changes in their health. Avoid going down the rabbit hole of getting full details of their condition and medication, unless you are a trained medic, but you may be the first person to notice and discuss changes in scalp and hair health. Know the limits of your expertise and refer clients to a doctor, dermatologist (skin expert), or a trichologist (hair and scalp expert).

T

Hair forms and grows in bulbs located in the dermis (outer) layers of the skin. Oxygen and essential nutrients are delivered to the bulb through the papilla at the base of the hair follicle, via the blood. Haircare products can only complement a proper diet.

Ask plenty of questions. An interview is as much for you as it is for the interviewer. Ask about what will be expected from you. What will your day-to-day duties be? What education and training will be offered? If you have anything that may hinder the way you work, be open and honest about this. You don’t want any surprises on either side, an honest conversation is always

Interview techniques / Autumn 2022 WWW.CONCEPTHAIRMAG.CO.UK I Concept Hair / 39

1

Be on time. Time keeping is really important. As a working hairdresser you can’t keep clients waiting. When you’re heading to an interview, always give yourself 15 minutes to find where you’re going and time to calm down and compose yourself and settle your nerves. If you rush into an interview, you won’t be prepared.

“An interview is as much for you as it is for interviewerthe”

Make sure you arrive looking your best. Appearance and image are important when working in a salon. Don’t arrive with unclean hair and make sure your nails and hands are clean. Clients want to go to a salon where the team members take pride in their appearance and a future employer will want to know you can offer this.

4

2

Do your research. You want to know who you will be working with, what they stand for, that your beliefs and values align with their brand. Check their website and check out their social media, find out what their ethos is, what their career opportunities are and what they offer. There’s no point going to work for a company that creates vivid bright colours if you’re interested in classical, natural styles.

Being mindful is the first step to a more relaxed and less anxious you, and meditation is one of the most effective routes to achieving a state of mindfulness.

All too often, when we try to enjoy a special moment, or just get on with our day, those niggling doubts, anxieties and worries creep in and take control.

hile studying towards a career in hairdressing is a fantastic experience, it can also get stressful at times. It’s important to look after your mental health and try and enjoy the moment rather than letting anxiety and stress spoil things.

W

A meditation space should be free of clutter but it should still be personal to you. If you have an item that helps you feel calm, such as a particular picture, ornament or plant, include this in your meditation space. You also want your space to be comfortable, so put cushions on the floor and maybe a blanket. A scented candle is also a nice addition to a meditation space – choose one with a relaxing aroma, such as lavender or

Keep this up for a few weeks and you should start to feel a general sense of wellbeing and calmness. When your mind isn’t holding on to unnecessary thoughts and worries, you will start to feel less anxious and stress levels will fall.

Making meditation and mindfulness part of your everyday routine will also make it easier for you to deal with difficulties that arise each day, because you will be more able to focus on the problem at hand, and the solution, without being distracted by other thoughts and concerns. You’ll also get more out of everyday pleasures, from your morning cup of tea to unwinding at the end of the day, with your feet up, watching your favourite film – bliss!

not essential to meditation, many find it distracting rather than helpful to achieving serenity. But if you live on a busy road, soothing music can help block out the sounds of traffic or passers-by. Again, it’s down to personal choice, but select music that will relax you, whether that’s a New Age instrumental track, a beautiful piece of classical music or something more contemporary — whatever works for you.

Sometimes we need to retrain our brain to be more mindful and the first step towards this is meditation. And if you thought meditation involved hours of lying on your back or sitting in the lotus position, think again. You can start your mindfulness journey with just 10 minutes of meditation a day. When you first wake up, just take a few moments to sit up, take a deep breath and then continue to focus your mind on your breathing for 10 minutes without dwelling on any other thoughts or questions that may enter your mind. If you find it hard to do this without help, there are lots of apps offering free guided meditation, including Wysa and Calm, that you might want to try.

“You will start to feel less anxious and stress levels will fall”

MAKE SPACE FOR MEDITATION

MORNING MINDSET

If you enjoy meditation and want to make it a bigger part of your life, it’s a great idea to create a space in your home dedicated to it. And don’t worry, if you don’t have a big enough home to dedicate a whole room to your meditation space, a corner or an alcove will do. This is your space, your personal refuge from the activity of everyday life, so choose somewhere that feels right for you.
