BIGGEST HIP EVENT OF THE YEAR EXPANDS TO NORTHERN IRELAND The HIP UK Heating Apprentice of the Year Competition will include Northern Ireland for the first time ever next year, with an additional regional heat taking place at Belfast Metropolitan College on Thursday 2nd March. The premier facilities at the college will provide the ideal home for the Northern Ireland regional heat, which will see one winner from that region attending the grand final in March where an overall UK winner will be announced.

ALUMINIUM DECADENCE WITH NEW DECORAL RANGE FROM MHS RADIATORS

SILENT SUMMER STRAIN ON BOILERS

MHS Radiators has added a trio of new models to its lightweight and energy efficient range of sectional aluminium radiators. Perfectly suited for use with low temperature heating systems, the Decoral 97, Decoral Vertical and Decoral Electric are all practical and functional radiators ideal for living rooms, bedrooms or studies, as well as areas including kitchens, bathrooms and hallways. Plus, their lack of weight makes them suitable for hanging on dry-lined walls.

New homeowner research reveals a summer spike in our showering habits that may be placing an unnoticed strain on the nation’s boilers, warns ADEY Professional Heating Solutions. Their research of 2,000 homeowners shows that almost one in five of those surveyed are likely to shower more than once a day at some point in the week, up from around one in ten people during the winter. A distinct preference for showers rather than baths rises to 70% in summer, compared to 55% in winter.

JOBS ARE LESS ‘PRESSING’ WITH A COMBINED TOOLKIT

Worcester, Bosch Group has won the prize for Best Consumer Website at the DigiAwards 2016. The annual awards, held by CorpComms Magazine to celebrate the innovative use of digital media in communications, praised Worcester’s website for its “good stakeholder identification” and “impressive numbers” – with the website having seen an increase in traffic of 1,767%. After reviewing the manufacturer’s former website and identifying common searches, they were able to develop more refined user-friendly features. This included a new “find an installer” feature which has almost doubled the number of sales leads received via website enquiries.

As the rise of more modern jointing techniques such as push and press continues, Pegler Yorkshire has launched a combined toolkit that gives installers the right equipment to speed up installations. The Pegler Yorkshire Toolkit includes everything an installer needs for a push or press system installation; a REMS 3-35mm pipe cutter suitable for Copper, Carbon and Stainless, 15, 22 and 28mm Jaws, 15-108mm XPress Copper Depth Gauge, Tectite Sprint and Tectite Classic Depth Gauge and Deburrer, 15mm Multi-layer Tube Straightener and 10-28mm tube cutter for use with PEX and Multi-layer tube. TURNING PRO SUPPORTING TOMORROW’S INSTALLERS TODAY Supporting the next generation of plumbers and heating engineers needs to be a priority for the industry, but as a group they are frequently overlooked. Here Ian Kenny, Marketing Director at Graham Plumbers’ Merchant discusses the new Turning Pro scheme and its rewards tailored exclusively for students and apprentices. Membership benefits In collaboration with HIP and as part of our ongoing work to support young people who are joining the industry, we have launched Turning Pro – a new rewards scheme specifically designed for students and apprentices. It is the first of its kind from a national plumbers’ merchant and offers money-off vouchers, exclusive promotions and free training.

Promotional offers We have tailored Turning Pro incentives to be of real value to students and apprentices. For example, we know that those still in training rarely spend large sums of money in merchants. As such, achievable voucher offers are included, for example £25 off when £50 or more is spent in branch. Those that join Turning Pro will also receive information on other special offers and promotions as well as industry news and updates.

Turning Pro members also benefit from free introductory and manufacturer courses at the Saint-Gobain Greenworks academy. The sessions, hosted at the purpose built training facility in Birmingham, cover a wide variety of sustainable building and renewable energy products. In addition, the scheme aims to help them in all areas – and provides discounts on parts and MOTs at both Halfords Autocentres and National Tyres and Autocare to help reduce the regular costs associated with owning a car.

Supporting the next generation The heating and plumbing industry offers young people a huge range of opportunities for their careers and we want to help them get the best possible start. The launch of Turning Pro follows the creation of our own apprentice scheme in 2015 and sponsorship of the HIP UK Heating Apprentice of the Year 2016. We also regularly welcome students into branches to gain the work experience that is so valuable.

We have tailored Turning Pro incentives to be of real value to students and apprentices.

Y E H T E R A T A WH . . . W O N O T P U An Interview with a Previous HIP UK Heating Apprentice of the Year Winner

INTERVIEW | AUTUMN ISSUE 2016 | HIP MAGAZINE

11

If you were to jump into a time machine and go back to the 2011 HIP UK Heating Apprentice of the Year Competition Final, you would see a very happy Kristian Poyner being crowned as the winner. Unfortunately, time machines are yet to be created, so we decided to do the next best thing and catch up with him to find out what he’s been up to since claiming the title and graduating from college.

It turns out that Kristian has gone from strength to strength since his victory and he is now working for EZsolar in Shropshire specialising in renewables, at the age of 27. But we expected nothing less from one of our HIP UK Heating Apprentice of the Year winners! He took a tea break to tell us just how he did it…

HIP: Where did you go to college and when did you graduate? KP: I went to Warrington Collegiate College and I graduated in 2011. HIP: How did you manage to get your apprenticeship? KP: I managed to get one through one of the chaps on my course. He had his own business and was attending college to get his Level Three.

HIP: What was the best thing about winning? KP: The feeling of satisfaction. And I had people coming up to me and saying ‘well done’ in the street because I had been in the local paper. I was a local celebrity for a couple of weeks!

HIP: What did you do to celebrate your win? KP: I went for a meal with my family and friends, and I went on a celebratory trip to Screwfix to spend some of the £1000 Screwfix voucher that I won – I spent £500 on a new Makita drill. HIP: What was the highlight of the competition for you? Other than winning of course! KP: Doing the two-day competition in Swindon. We were all in the same hotel when we stayed over, which had a pub attached. In the evening after the first day all of us

– teachers and students – were sat in the pub having a really good laugh. It wasn’t competitive; it was just a really friendly atmosphere, chatting about what we went through that day. HIP: What did you do after you graduated? KP: I carried on at Penketh Plumbing and Bathrooms where I did my apprenticeship for six more months, installing bathrooms and heating systems mostly. I then went on to be self-employed for a couple of years and after that I went on to work at United Utilities as a water meter engineer for twelve months. I recently moved to Shropshire so I now work for EZsolar. The field I’m in is fascinating and I’ve now been doing it for 18 months. I find the latest technologies really interesting, and there wasn’t a lot of call for LPG and oil, so it’s hard to find someone to give you experience with OFTEC. HIP: What’s your favourite thing about being a plumber? KP: I think my favourite thing is meeting different people from different walks of life and seeing the different houses people live in. HIP: What’s your least favourite thing about being a plumber? KP: I would probably say sanitary and ground works because you get covered in mud! HIP: What are your views on apprenticeships? Would you encourage other people to do them? KP: I don’t think you can beat an apprenticeship in a manual, skilled trade. It’s very different in a house to a workshop – things are made easier when they’re set up in college. You need onsite experience, which you only get with an apprenticeship, that’s critical.

HIP: What was the first tool you ever bought? KP: It was a blowtorch when I was at college, in the first year of my Level 2. It’s just died on me actually! I can’t bring myself to chuck it. HIP: Do you have a brand that you swear by? KP: Makita – all of my power tools are from them. HIP: Do you think lecturers have an influence on the brands you buy? KP: I think it’s more a case of personal preference. I tried a few brands but I get on well with Makita. HIP: Where do you want to go from here? Are you happy doing what your doing now? KP: I think renewables is where I’ll stay – it’s interesting and diverse. I might like to go self-employed again at some point.

HIP: Have you got any advice for current students? KP: Always try and make a job something that you’d be proud of in your own house and to a standard that you would have in your own property. Stick to that rule and you shouldn’t go wrong.

HIP: Was there a particular event or a person like your lecturer who really influenced you during your time as a student? KP: My tutor Joe Tart who came with me to the event. He used to give me little jobs at the beginning of my career because he had a house that he rented out. He’d been there himself so he knew what it was like, and we got on well.

I don't think you can beat an apprenticeship in a manual, skilled trade...You need onsite experience, which you only get with an apprenticeship...

E M I T R E LOGOS OV Working on the tools, you come across the same logos time and time again. It probably feels like they’ve been there forever, especially when you’re coming to the end of your Level Three qualifications. But some of the brands we are familiar with have actually had quite a facelift over the years, so we thought we’d do some digging and try and find out what major names Vaillant, Vokèra and Grundfos used to look like back in the day.

GRUNDFOS

PRESENT DAY

LATE 1980S

Although Grundfos started out in Denmark in 1945, it wasn’t until 1955 that the company incorporated the symbol of a water screw as part of their company logo. The idea goes back to the late 1940s, when an employee looked at an internal working of a Grundfos CP3 pump, which had a strong resemblance to the Archimedes' water screw. Archimedes (287 - 212 B.C.) was a Greek mathematician and physicist and also a major inventor. He discovered that by rotating a large wooden screw it was possible to raise water several metres from a river or lake. This was a very important step forward as it was the start of irrigation that allowed more land to be used for agriculture. Grundfos’ logo has been revised several times since then, but the basis and principal of the design remains fundamentally unchanged.

PRESENT DAY

2005

1993

MID 1980S

VOKÈRA Vokèra was established in the UK by heating engineer, Claudio Guiglielmucci, in 1983 and since then, the company has grown impressively. Over this period, Vokèra has helped transform the UK heating market. Reflecting the company’s evolution, the Vokèra logo has seen many changes. Although the recognisable green has always remained the same, the original black typeface has been replaced with the unmistakable, bold, grey lettering.

VAILLANT PRESENT DAY

In 1899, Johann Vaillant adopted the 'Easter bunny in an egg' as the trademark for Vaillant. This made him one of the pioneers in the field of branded products in the German consumer goods industry. The Vaillant bunny is today one of the most familiar heating technology trademarks in Europe.

COMPETITION SPONSORS

16

PLATINUM SPONSOR

ADEY SUPPORTS YOUNG APPRENTICES ADEY’s CEO John Vaughan explains why Europe’s largest water treatment manufacturer is so keen to be supporting the HIP UK Heating Apprentice of the Year Awards.

“The 2016 competition marked the third consecutive year we’ve been involved with HIP’s search to find the UK’s Heating Apprentice of the Year. The heating and plumbing industry has some very bright rising stars and the competition is now well established as an excellent platform to showcase this talent.

“As a leader in the heating and plumbing industry, it is important to us that we engage with the new generation of installers, especially as advances in new technology continue to develop and influence working practices. ADEY’s MagnaClean filter technology was created by an installer for installers and it is important that we continue this legacy, not only through providing them with the best tools to do their job, but also through supporting and encouraging heating and plumbing apprentices entering the trade.

“With many young people now seeing the benefits of structured, hands-on training through an apprenticeship, the competition is a fantastic way of lending a hand to those starting out in their careers and giving them the praise they deserve for their hard work. “We were delighted to host this year’s competition final in our stateof-the-art Training and Conference Centre, which provided the apprentices with the perfect location to demonstrate their skills with a complex challenge. “We’re always excited to see the standard of work improve year on year. It’s a testament to the training from businesses within the industry that help to drive young talent, and ADEY is delighted to support a competition that demonstrates the industry’s progression.”

We’re always excited to see the standard of work improve year on year.

HIP MAGAZINE | AUTUMN ISSUE 2016 | BOILERS

A ‘NO-DISASTER’ ZONE Power flushing doesn’t sound very glamorous, but power flushing central heating systems incorrectly can have disastrous results. Take Viessmann’s word for it: the job of clearing scale, debris and sludge from the water of a central heating system isn’t as bad as it sounds and it will probably become a regular part of how you earn your living. This is because it affects how well a heating system works, and if it’s done incorrectly it can damage the boiler.

The UK domestic boiler market is largely driven in part by distress purchases, as a vast proportion of boiler replacements are down to existing boiler breakdown. In most cases this means that the rest of the central heating system requires power flushing because 10 to 20 years’ worth of debris could have built-up in the system that the new boiler is being added to.

Some primary heat exchangers are more robust than others - at Viessmann the InoxRadial heat exchanger is exceptionally long lasting because it has large waterways and is made from high-grade stainless steel, approved for use with softened water. Plate heat exchangers however have very narrow waterways and act as filters in the event of system debris being flushed into the boiler. It is essential to ensure the boiler is bypassed. If using chemicals, the way to heat the system is to use a power flushing machine with an integrated heating element, but bear in mind that the introduction of chemicals to the system can create its own problems and isn’t always necessary, so it’s important to follow the chemical manufacturer’s guidelines. It’s worth remembering, too, that you’ll need water velocity strong enough to penetrate, dislodge, suspend and transport debris around the system. Viessmann strongly recommend flushing the system before the new boiler is installed, only using chemicals when necessary, filling the system with drinkable, softened water and regularly bleeding for air. Done this way, the new boiler will be fault-free for many more years.  Visit viessmann.co.uk

SYSTEM DEBRIS

BLOCKED PLATE HEAT EXCHANGER

 Close up of bend

 Bends with debris

Most installers use a chemical cleaner and inhibitor, although it may only be required in certain circumstances and these chemicals require heated system water to help loosen debris in the system - but if the new boiler is used to heat the system to temperature and not isolated, all the debris filters through the boiler and into the heat exchangers and components. Some primary heat exchangers are more robust than others - at Viessmann our unique Inox-Radial heat exchanger is exceptionally long-lasting because it has large waterways and is made from high-grade stainless steel approved for use with softened water, unlike aluminium heat exchangers.

GET SMART AND TAKE CONTROL When fitting a new boiler, heating engineers must consider the controls that need to be installed alongside it.

The industry has long been raising awareness of how efficient modern, condensing boilers are, however an equal amount of attention should also be paid to the devices that complete the system, both in terms of their efficiency credentials and if they are the right option for the application – and customer – in hand.

Smartphone technology A recent article by the BBC highlighted how smartphone technology has developed to a level where it can help consumers dramatically reduce their heating bills.* This is particularly true in the case of heating controls, especially with the emergence of internet connected devices (such as our own, recently launched ‘Ariston NET’) that allow end users to manage the temperature of their properties remotely, using an app on their smartphone or tablet. Such smart controls also maximise the amount of time a heating system is switched off, ensuring it only comes on when required. Sensys control

While some controls need to be hardwired, there are also wireless options available, which can be fitted almost anywhere in a property. These offer a simple and low cost method of installation, while minimising the amount of disruption for the consumer. Indeed, it is the wireless capabilities of modern controls that have allowed apps – including our own ‘Ariston NET’ – to interact with heating systems over a secure Wi-Fi network.

therefore for longer) each day, more energy is going to be used than is saved. This emphasises the importance of ensuring a customer fully understands their heating system controls, both in terms of how to operate them and their overall impact on costs. Modern controls also present installers with excellent business opportunities, especially with householders always seeking to spend less money on their heating systems.  Visit ariston.co.uk Ariston Clas HE evo boiler

Energy efficiency However, before getting completely swept away on a wave of mobile euphoria, it should be noted the true energy efficiency credentials of these controls will depend on how each individual customer opts to use them; e.g. if they keep turning the heating on earlier (and * Source: BBC News “How smartphones can cut heating bills by a quarter”: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-25779937

POTENTIAL IS NOW CHRONO-PROPORTIONAL Replacing an older boiler with a high-efficiency condensing model won’t necessarily optimise energy savings, but installing chrono-proportional control, also known as TPI (Time Proportional and Integral) can unlock this potential. Domestic heating systems with a simple mechanical thermostat can’t achieve the full energy-saving benefits of a condensing boiler because the boiler will rarely be running in high efficiency condensing mode with this type of control. Switching to a basic on/off electronic room thermostat can produce a reduction of over 2% in both energy and carbon emissions. However, using an electronic thermostat with chronoproportional capability provides much closer temperature control and maximises energy savings. In fact, ‘real world’ tests conducted by Danfoss showed reductions of 10% are achievable compared with a mechanical thermostat.

So what is chrono-proportional control & why is it more efficient? Chrono-proportional is the technical term for time-based on/off control. Instead of standard on/off control it introduces a fixed

All Danfoss electronic room thermostats come with the comfort and energy-saving benefits of chrono-proportional control... cycle rate on the system and then uses an advanced control algorithm to determine the duration of the on and off periods within each cycle in proportion to load, increasing both comfort and economy. Chrono-proportional has clear advantages over the other main control types. For example, products with mechanical bellows are slow to react in ‘natural convection’, making them less effective in maintaining the boiler in high efficiency condensing mode. Although faster than bellows, an electronic on/off thermostat is slow-reacting and is still reliant on natural convection rate.

Chrono-proportional control works by ensuring the boiler ‘on’ time is reduced to a minimum and matching the heat output with the heat loss. This not only maintains the set comfort temperature but also maintains a lower return temperature, keeping the boiler in condensing mode for longer.

All Danfoss electronic room thermostats come with the comfort and energy-saving benefits of chrono-proportional control, from entry-level options to fully programmable products. Additionally, the all-new Danfoss TPOne programmable room thermostat offers the extra savings of a selectable Delayed or Optimised start. Both adjust dynamically to the difference between the ambient and set temperature, either delaying startup or calculating the optimum time to start heating to hit setpoint at the scheduled time.  Visit heating.danfoss.co.uk

Just as finding a reliable and trustworthy plumber is important, being comfortable at home is vital for customers, and smart devices are a great way to ensure this.

SMART COMFORT WITH DRAYTON Up and coming plumbers and heating engineers should keep this in mind, because when they are fully qualified, installation of smart devices can open up a lucrative revenue stream. So just how do smart controls offer more comfort?

With this in mind, Drayton has created miGenie internet connected heating control packs – known as ‘Wishes’ that can be controlled via an app on an iOS or Android smartphone, tablet, or Apple Watch.

Comfort & control Research has found that comfort and control are very closely linked, and heating controls in particular can influence consumers’ comfort and sense of wellbeing. A feeling of control is important to people and their sense of happiness, and when control is disrupted it is likely to have an impact on how content somebody feels in their property. Smart thermostats are the ideal tool to ensure a property is kept at a temperature considered comfortable by its occupants, no matter what the heating requirements are. This is because they allow the homeowner to remotely manage the temperature of their property, ready for their return.

Energy savings As well as creating comfort in terms of temperature, smart heating controls can also help to reduce energy usage and bills, which means homeowners feel more financially contented too. Adding a modern ‘TPI’ room thermostat plus TRVs to a conventional heating system can reduce energy costs by over 50% - and new smart devices can take this even further with the enhanced control they offer. A recent study also found that 60% of respondents reported worrying a “great deal” or “fair amount” about the environmental impact of the energy they consume. Smart controls are ideal as they can minimise energy usage.

Products are pre-bound, boast an industry standard backplate, and can be installed in ten minutes. The controls are really simple to operate too, featuring familiar buttons and icons, and step-by-step instructions for set up.  Visit mi-genie.co.uk

OFTEC EXPANDS TRAINING AND SUPPORT FOR HEATING TECHNICIANS Over the last couple of years the oil heating industry has greatly benefited from low oil prices. Oil continues to be by far the cheapest major home heating fuel, currently coming in at 31% less expensive than mains gas, 52% cheaper than LPG and 56% less expensive than electric storage heaters to heat the average home.

OFTEC registrations director Adrian Lightwood comments: “The oil heating market has certainly experienced a revival of fortunes and existing oil technicians, as well as those coming new into the industry, are likely to benefit from an increase in business. “However, we recognise the market is gradually changing and to reflect this, we have expanded the range of specialised support on offer to technicians who can now take advantage of our complete off-gas registration service covering both renewable and traditional technologies. “Consumers are becoming more savvy and increasingly looking for a guarantee of competence to protect them and provide peace of mind that they are employing someone who is fully qualified to carry out heating works. “OFTEC registration provides just that along with a range of other valuable benefits to support technicians, help them save time and money, and win more customers.”

This favourable scenario has stimulated a surge in boiler sales with purchases for January to April this year standing at the highest level since 2007. It has also sparked a rise in oil related work for technicians and OFTEC has received an increasing number of enquiries from gas technicians looking to expand into the oil sector.

OFT 10-201 With low prices predicted to remain for the foreseeable future, the oil heating market continues to offer good opportunities for technicians and in response, OFTEC has recently launched a new commercial course, OFT 10-201, which covers the servicing and commissioning of larger multi-stage burners, as fitted in many light and medium commercial appliances.

Registration scheme To help technicians looking to extend their market reach further, OFTEC also now offers a full off-gas sector registration scheme covering all the major renewable technologies – heat pumps, solar thermal and biomass – plus solid fuel. As a result, OFTEC now has over 8,500 registered technicians on its book – a figure which is steadily growing.

GO BRUSHLESS FOR MORE POWER

Power tool manufacturers such as Hitachi are now incorporating brushless motors into their power tools. That’s because brushless motors can be more powerful, as there is space to make the copper windings on the outside of the motor larger and there is none of the friction energy loss during use that brushed motors inevitably suffer from. The result is a more efficient and longer lasting power tool.

Improved design Due to the more compact design, incorporating the brushless motor permits a reduction in size and weight of tools for easier handling. Not only that, the Hitachi brushless motor has large FETs (Field Effect Transistors) and highly durable electronic circuits for superior durability. Brushless motors also improve dust proofing, which is important for installers as it gives the power tools a longer service life, saving time and money, not just in respect of cleaning the

power tools but replacing them too. The Hitachi electronic circuit board is silicone-coated to protect it from dust.

Benefits Another important benefit is increased operator safety and overload protection. Brushless motors don’t generate the same heat as there are no carbon brushes and they can’t be burnt out. They also offer better protection on kick-back control when operating. Hitachi also have power cut out technology, which keeps the operator safe too. Perhaps the area where the introduction of brushless technology has had most impact is in the cordless power tool sector. There’s nothing more frustrating than a power tool failing mid-job simply because it needs to be charged. With the huge improvement in efficiency this is no longer a pressing consideration. Brushless motors work particularly well in big cordless grinders

An important benefit of brushless motors is the increased operator safety and overload protection. and hammer drills because these tend to be overworked by users. They can now have confidence that their battery will last the course. When powerful Lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery technology is combined with the benefits of brushless motors in cordless power tool ranges, housebuilders and developers get more flexibility and choice out of their tools than ever before.  For more details on Hitachi Power Tools visit hitachi-powertools.co.uk

BAFFLEBUSTING WITH BAXI Always under pressure to get the job done quickly, and sometimes out on the road alone, even experienced engineers often find themselves in need of advice from a like-minded technical engineer. The engineers within the Baxi technical team have a total of 170 years of experience, meaning that they have some pretty useful knowledge under their belts. Here they answer some of the most commonly asked questions…

 TYPICAL BOILER INSTALLATION QUERIES - FLUES

What are the minimum clearances for flue terminations?

ANSWER: Flue clearances are manufacturerspecific, and are listed in the installation instructions supplied with the boiler. If the clearance you require is not listed in the manual you will need to refer to BS 5440 Part 1 for guidance.

What is the maximum length of concentric flue that I can use if fitting a 28kW Baxi EcoBlue Combi?

ANSWER: Baxi EcoBlue Combi’s can use either a 60/100mm or a 80/125mm concentric flue. If using the 60/100, the maximum length is 10m. If using the 80/125, the maximum length is 20m. In both cases the use of a 90 degree bend reduces the maximum length by 1m and a 135 degree bend reduces the length by 0.5m. This information is also printed in the installation guide for the boiler / flue.

KEEPING BUSINESSES MOVING

The amount of vans in the UK is growing because businesses who transport goods or services could not function without them.

A van is so much more than just a mode of transport; a van is an office, and it is an advert. This means that the demands placed upon it are so much higher. A van needs to be reliable, robust, up for the job, comfortable, smart and convey the right image. At Mercedes-Benz Vans, they understand that a van needs to be on the road as much as is possible. They can service vans outside of ‘normal’

working hours, which means businesses don’t need to miss out on work, as their van can be in workshops at night. Mercedes-Benz Vans is able to do this as they offer extended opening hours across their nationwide Dealer Network, which has more than 110 after sales sites, with over one third offering round-the-clock servicing, and virtually all the rest operating at least two shifts daily to enable very late hour opening.

MobiloVan In addition, Mercedes-Benz Vans customers benefit from MobiloVan – a free call-out service across the UK and Europe, which comes as part of the 30 year free roadside assistance cover with every vehicle purchase. Across the 150 MobiloVan roadside assistance vehicles covering the UK, there is an average response time of less than an hour, with over 80% of vehicles fixed at the roadside. Mercedes-Benz Vans even sends their head office colleagues out to spend time with customers and understand the role that vans play in their operation, from Account Managers to Managing Director, Steve Bridge.

MobiloVan helps customers to keep their vehicles on the road - it can cost up to £500 per day for a business’ vehicle to be ‘off the road’. MobiloVan cover includes notifiable failures such as indicator failures or damaged wing mirrors, and also contributes up to £130 (Inc. VAT) for roadside damage repairs.

Mercedes-Benz Vans is committed to the ongoing education of drivers to ensure that all of the vehicles’ safety features and benefits are utilised, with a strong focus on the maintenance of the van to ensure it runs at its best. For example, the use of GenuineParts to maximise uptime; Mercedes-Benz invests more than £4.6 billion annually in Research and Development to ensure that each vehicle part is developed to work in harmony with the rest of the van.

Mercedes-Benz invests more than £4.6 billion annually in Research and Development... Making the right choice It is also important for uptime that the right vehicle is chosen in the first place. Depending on the operation of the van, it may be that the Extra-Long Citan is more effective for the job rather than a Compact Vito. Utilising the advice from a professional vandedicated Dealer can guide you on the type of vehicle for the work required, and to fit within your budget. With extensive finance options, as well as an all-new Approved Used offering, getting the right van for a business is now easier than ever.

Approved used range Mercedes-Benz Vans has redeveloped its Approved Used offering, enabling all operators to access the right van for them, whatever their vehicle requirement. The Approved Used range of vans are all now available up to 6 years old, with a maximum mileage of 150,000 miles. The vans come with a full service history and have to meet a multi-point pre-sale check to qualify, with outstanding finance, theft and insurance write-off checked. Approved Used vans come with a 12-month MOT, 12-month insurance-based ‘wear and tear’ warranty (which can be extended), and are serviced as required if there is less than

5,000 miles to the next service. The corrosion warranty is renewed and there is a minimum of 5mm tyre tread depth remaining, as well as the vehicle benefiting from a full valet. Mercedes-Benz Vans understand that customers want to enjoy the benefits of owning a Mercedes-Benz van, and it is their job to ensure van drivers are in the right vehicle for their requirements and budget.

The Approved Used criteria has been developed to better serve the needs of van operators – it is very clear exactly what standards all of the Approved Used vans now adhere to, and enables customers to have a broader spectrum of vehicles that could better suit their needs.

Currently there are around 4 million vans on UK roads, and with more and more businesses requiring either the transportation of goods or services, keeping businesses moving is vital for the van industry as it continues to rise.

HIP MAGAZINE | AUTUMN ISSUE 2016 | PIPEWORK & PUMPS

CHOOSING THE RIGHT PIPE FITTING Getting to grips with the various pipe fittings available can be tricky. Graham The Plumbers’ Merchant give you their top tips when making that vital choice.

HOT OR COLD

Traditional methods of connecting pipe runs such as soldering and brazing have been the preferred method for years. While more expensive than end-feed or solder ring options, ‘cold’ products, such as compression, push-fit and pressfit options, are quicker to install and do not require an open flame. This means there is no fire risk and no need for a hot works permit or extra insurance.

DEMOUNTABLE PRODUCTS

The vast majority of compression and push fittings are demountable and can be removed if necessary without damage to the pipe or fitting, allowing them to be reused. This ensures quicker and easier maintenance, reduces the level of waste and saves time if a correction has to be made.

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION

Every installer encounters jobs where space is limited and selecting the right fittings can save a significant amount of time and effort. For example, soldering a joint correctly may not be possible where the entire surface of the pipe is not accessible. In these situations, press fittings or push fittings can provide the best solution.

THINK QUALITY

While it may be tempting to reduce costs by purchasing cheaper alternatives this may prove to be costly in the long term. Purchasing high-quality products from a reputable merchant will not only give peace of mind but also ensure that customers are satisfied and happy to recommend the company’s services.

WRAS

If the pipework will carry drinking water, the pipe and fittings should be Water Regulation Advisory Scheme (WRAS) approved. This certifies that the product does not contain materials that will contaminate the water or cause ‘waste, misuse or undue consumption’ of water.

It’s important to remember that there is no one pipe fitting solution that is right for all applications so having a range of options at your disposal will allow the flexibility to select the best option accordingly.  Visit grahamplumbersmerchant.co.uk

THE POSITIVES OF PLASTIC While most plumbing products are strictly ‘buy as and when required’, the Hep2O plumbing push-fit system makes a solid case for ‘keep in the van’ status – reliable, versatile and easy to install.

Connecting simply and quickly with both plastic and copper pipe, Hep2O is suitable for a range of hot and cold water and heating applications, making it ideal for new-build and refurbishment projects. A wide range of fittings are available to accommodate any plumbing job, including hot and cold applications as well as underfloor heating systems. Hep2O pipe comes off the coil straight but is highly flexible for fast and easy installation. When fitting a bathroom or kitchen, it is easier to fit the plumbing around the project, and not the other way around. Made from flexible polybutylene, Hep2O pipe can be easily cabled around joists and obstructions, and despite being flexible, it comes off the coil straight, so it’s easy to use on site.

Joint recognition technology For installer and client peace of mind, Hep2O features In4Sure™ joint recognition technology that tells the user when the pipe pushed is fully inserted. The uniquely designed SmartSleeve™ pipe insert works with the cleverly engineered fitting so the installer can unmistakably ‘feel’ when a connection is made. The user just has to twist the pipe and feel for the rumble to be 100 per cent sure they have made a good connection. An added bonus of Hep2O is that fittings can be easily adjusted with the HepKey demounting system. Simply clip the HepKey

over the fitting to depress the collar and release the fitting. This system prevents tampering or accidental demounting and ensures your installation is totally secure.

Performance guarantee In terms of performance, if the system is installed in accordance with manufacturer recommendations, Hep2O has a minimum design life expectancy of 50 years. Wavin has such confidence in Hep2O that it also offers a 50-year guarantee against defects in materials or manufacturing of all Hep2O pipe and fittings. ○ For more information on Wavin’s Hep2O Plumbing and Heating systems and to request a free test pack visit hep2o.co.uk

Here is a little insight into how the company continues to drive standards by providing a robust and comprehensive water testing service that underpins best practice.

Installer focussed Maintaining heating system efficiency is a big issue so the emphasis placed on quality in the plumbing and heating sector is arguably now more important than ever, and rightly so. This is why ADEY sought to develop a comprehensive, reliable and quick water testing service that gives confidence to installers that are leading the way. ADEY’s state-of-the-art R&D laboratory in Kent Science Park, Sittingbourne, is the first and only laboratory in the sector to be accredited by the United Kingdom

Accreditation Service (UKAS) for testing heating system water and water treatment products to the highest industry standards. The scope of the UKAS accreditation covers not only chemical analysis of the quality of central heating system water, but includes corrosion inhibitor performance testing against BuildCert CIAS procedure, with results available within 24 hours, ensuring customers are getting the best performance with the fastest service in the industry.

Underpinning best practice The award-winning five-step ADEY Best Practice™ approach of clean, flush, maintain, protect and test provides effective heating system protection. It is backed by the use of premium products which have been

developed with the installer in mind following extensive research, development and testing carried out in the lab. The five steps illustrate the combined effect of system cleaning, quality water treatment chemicals, the most effective magnetic filtration and water testing with the ultimate aim of working to improve heating system efficiency, protect against breakdown and reduce household heating bills.

HIP MAGAZINE | AUTUMN ISSUE 2016 | SPECIAL REPORT

INTRODUCING...

SNG PLUMBING & HEATING Celia Matthews, the plumber who brought you HIP Magazine ten years ago, is now embarking on an exciting new plumbing journey and YOU could benefit from it… SNG (Supporting the Next Generation) Plumbing and Heating will be recruiting newly qualified engineers to fill the gap they often find themselves stuck in, between training and employment.

Their mission is to ensure that they excel at customer service on every job they do. Head of the operation will be Steve Griffin, from Shrewsbury, who has over 30 years’ industry experience in both domestic and commercial plumbing and heating engineering. He has been a lecturer in the subject at some of the top colleges across the UK and has judged

numerous national plumbing competitions. Celia founded the SNG Group in 2006 which began with SNG Publishing, a publishing company that now produces HIP Magazine, the only magazine exclusively for plumbing and heating students. This is now distributed to almost every college in the UK and has proved to be a major success, this year celebrating its tenth year. Together, with their wealth of experience in the industry, they have now launched SNG Plumbing and Heating, which has already begun to build its customer database. Celia says: “Many plumbing and heating students come away from their apprenticeship with all of the required skills and a great awareness of all of the latest technology in the industry, however there is little emphasis placed on customer care, from maintaining

SNG Plumbing & Heating's mission is to ensure that they excel at customer service on every job they do. a clean and tidy appearance and being generally polite, to looking after a customer’s property. “We intend to change that at SNG Plumbing by giving both the newly qualified installers and the customers we work for an entirely new experience, where the customer is the number one priority at all times, as it should be.”

SNG Plumbing & Heating are now recruiting plumbing and heating engineers who have just completed their Level 3 apprenticeship and have obtained their Gas Safe qualification.

BAFFLE-BUSTING WITH BAXI Baxi answer even more commonly asked technical questions…  TYPICAL BOILER BREAKDOWN QUERY

I’m working on a Potterton Promax SL heat only boiler and I think the solenoids in the gas valve have failed. How can I test them to find out?

ANSWER: The resistance (ohms) of the solenoid coils can be measured using a multimeter and if the solenoids are OK the resistance between the two outside pins of the gas valve electrical connection should be 4100 ohms +/- 10%.

 Visit baxi.co.uk

 TYPICAL GENERAL ADVICE QUERY

I am fitting a boiler and I’ve noticed that it is now supplied with some Energy efficiency labels, what do I do with the labels?

ANSWER: The labels you are referring to are ErP labels. This is legislation which came into force in September 2015 and requires action by the installer. If you are only supplying the boiler and no other equipment during the installation you just need to be sure to hand the ErP product label to the customer with the installation pack upon completion of the job. Whereas, if you have supplied a new room temperature control at the same time as supplying the boiler then it is required that you calculate the “package efficiency” and complete the ErP package label before handing it over to the customer. Advice on how to complete the package label can be found on the Baxi website.

NEW GEBERIT SLIMLINE DUOFIX FRAME SIGMA 8CM

SENTINEL JETFLUSH RAPID® CLEANS UP

The Geberit Duofix Sigma 8cm framing system is faster and simpler to fit than ever before. With the re-designed frame now more closely aligned to the rest of the Geberit Duofix Sigma family of products, fewer modifications are needed when installing multiple frames. It has self-impeding feet to increase the height capability of installation, enabling it to be used on sub floors up to 20cm. The height of the frame itself has increased to 114cm, while the flush plate centre line has been raised to 100cm and it has a frame width of just 50cm.

Sentinel’s new powerflushing machine, the JetFlush Rapid®, delivers thorough removal of magnetic and nonmagnetic debris, while restoring heat and efficiency to domestic heating systems. The unit’s high flow rate of 90 litres / minute is made possible by a bespoke pump that couples a large, high efficiency impeller with a powerful motor. Instant flow reversal adds extra cleaning power and it can clean 20 to 25 radiators from one location thanks to 20 metre head pressure. It is the size of a small suitcase and weighs only 17kg, despite boasting a one piece 39 litre tank.

INTA TAKES THE PRESSURE OUT OF CHOOSING VALVES Inta has launched a new extensive range of WRAS-approved pressure reducing valves (PRVs). With static and dynamic pressure control, the range is designed to reduce fluid pressures and maintain the desired level, preventing damage to system components located downstream of the PRV. Due to the compact design of the valves, which range between 15mm and 54mm, they can be used in areas where space is limited and can be installed either vertically or horizontally. They also come complete with an optional ‘dial up’ pressure gauge to help adjust pressure between 0.5 bar and 6 bar to match the requirements of the system.  intatec.co.uk
