MENTAL HEALTH CONCERNS FOR THE NATION’S VAN DRIVERS Exclusive research commissioned by Mercedes-Benz Vans UK Ltd to mark Mental Health Awareness Week 2017 explored for the first time the issue of mental health within an often overlooked yet vital business community the nation’s van drivers, delivery professionals and van operators - who help to keep business moving.

Mercedes Sprinter

The research, conducted amongst 2,000 van owners and operators, highlighted that almost one in five van drivers describes their current mental health as poor or very poor, with three-quarters commenting that work is a contributory factor.

More than half of the van drivers with poor mental health said that increased time pressures (52%) and increased workload (50%) are factors affecting their mental health, with one in three believing that job uncertainty is contributing to their poor mental health and 17% of delivery drivers adding that road congestion is impacting on their state of mind.

Despite this, only one in three van drivers who believe their mental health to be suffering have spoken to their manager about their concerns, with more than one in 10

We need to create a culture in which anyone experiencing problems can ask for help in the knowledge that they will be supported. (12%) who haven’t spoken to anyone about their mental health at all. Steve Bridge, Managing Director, MercedesBenz Vans UK Ltd, commented: “With a continued surge in online shopping, an increasing reliance on same-day deliveries and spiralling traffic volumes across the UK, the real-world pressures on van drivers are changing. “Our research findings act as a clear call to van drivers to talk about their mental health concerns and work pressures with their employers and for employers to actively listen to the real concerns of their workforce not only during Mental Health Awareness Week but beyond.” James Harris, a spokesperson for the Mental Health Foundation said of the

research: “Compared to the national average, these figures indicate that van drivers are experiencing an increased rate of poor mental health. In part this may be explained by the pressures of the job, and the fact that van drivers can often be isolated. “This is important because we know that men are less likely to reach out for help, and are four times more likely to end their life by suicide. We need to create a culture in which anyone experiencing problems can ask for help in the knowledge that they will be supported.”

UNDERSTANDING BOILER WARRANTIES Some boiler warranties are now offering up to a decade of protection but many homeowners don’t realise that without an annual service and effective water treatment programme, this cover could become invalid.

be encouraged to think again. All of these symptoms are indicative that there could be a build-up of damaging black sludge in the system.

Black iron oxide sludge or magnetite contributes to around 95% of system debris and is the number one cause of heating system problems by a significant margin.

Warranties

Research According to Which? almost half of new gas combi boilers will develop a problem in their first six years. Research conducted by ADEY found that 37% of homeowners are currently experiencing issues with their heating system including noisy pipework, cold spots on radiators, loss of pressure, low and inconsistent heat levels and slow operation. Those who perhaps haven’t read the small print and assume these issues will be covered by their boiler warranty, but decided not to have an annual boiler service, should

The warranties offered by most major boiler manufacturers usually stipulate that damage caused by hard water scale deposits or sludge resulting from corrosion won’t be covered. This is why many now recommend that a magnetic filter is fitted with every new boiler installed. However, because of the very small particle size, truly effective filtration can only be achieved by using a filtration method that will work no matter what the size of particles. This is why many boiler manufacturers and installers recommend MagnaClean, because we’ve worked hard to ensure they succeed where other filtration methods fail to capture the finest particles.

It’s unlikely that all homeowners will want to know exactly what a magnetic filter does and how it works but we’re confident that the key benefits brought by installing an effective and proven magnetic filter will interest them. For example, by collecting and removing magnetite from a system, ADEY’s filters will reduce energy bills by up to 6% year on year, extend the boiler lifespan beyond the average 12-15 years and protect a system against breakdown and the associated repair costs.

HIP MAGAZINE | AUTUMN ISSUE 2017 | INTERVIEW

AN INTERVIEW WITH...

JOHN SAVAGE

INTERVIEW | AUTUMN ISSUE 2017 | HIP MAGAZINE

13

The plumbing and heating industry is vast and it can offer many different career paths, so we caught up with John Savage, a previous apprentice who has gone on to become the award-winning Managing Director of Flame Heating Spares. He tells us how he came to set up his own business, which now operates seven trade counters throughout the North East of England…

HIP: How did you manage to get an apprenticeship and where did you do it? JS: I came across a trainee scheme with Plumb Center based in my hometown South Shields, so all my learning and work experience was carried out in-house with the company. Truth be told, I was seeking work from the job centre, anything that would pay me £100 a week, which at the time, when I was 17, was quite a lot of money.

It is an exciting time for the firm as we gear up for further growth, with the ideal goal of expanding nationally. JS: Flame Heating Spares is a fast growing Heating & Plumbing merchant based in the North East, serving both trade customers and the general public. We supply boilers, heating spares, plumbing equipment, bathrooms and renewable energy products from across our seven branches in the region and online through our website.

HIP: What attracted you to a career in the plumbing and heating industry?

HIP: What has been the biggest challenge that you have faced?

JS: I have always been confident and a good communicator and the industry is filled with people who have those traits! I soon got my teeth into it and enjoyed dealing with customers.

JS: Recruitment. We have built up an effective and successful business model, which has been implemented across our branch network but it can be a struggle to find the right employees to run our branches. It hasn’t been a major issue, but has sometimes delayed the opening of a branch in the past. However, I’d rather get it right even if it means taking more time.

HIP: What did you do after you became fully qualified? JS: After completing my training programme and in-house learning, I became a Trade Counter Assistant for Plumb Center. Within four years I became a branch manager at Parts Center in nearby Washington. HIP: Why did you decide to set up your own business? JS: Having worked in the industry and for some of the national merchants, I thought the time was right to take the plunge into business and build-on my experience accrued since I was an apprentice. I always had an ambition to run my own business, though, ever since a young age. In 2011, I saw a gap in the market and together with my business partner, Gary Riseborough, we established Flame and haven’t looked back since. HIP: How would you describe Flame Heating Spares to someone who has not come across your business before?

HIP: What advice would you give to any students who would like to pursue a similar career path? JS: Follow your dream. It might sound cliché, but if you believe in an idea, even if others don’t, just go for it. I also can’t stress the importance of working hard and getting to know your industry inside out. HIP: What is your favourite thing about the plumbing and heating industry? JS: Getting out and about and building relationships with customers. I still enjoy the day-to-day banter with colleagues and the tradespeople we deal with every single day. HIP: How did it feel to win the IoD North East Young Director of the Year award? JS: It was a great feeling, definitely one of my greatest personal achievements to date. I wasn’t expecting it, to be honest, and hadn’t

even prepared a speech! But it was a great evening and has heightened my standing within the industry and the North East business community. HIP: Why do you think your entrepreneurial skills have been so well acknowledged? JS: Over the last six years, Flame has grown from a single branch operation to seven, with double digit growth every year, so I think that has been a factor among my peers in the business community. I have also been fortunate enough to win a number of business awards, which has also helped the cause!

HIP: Do you take on apprentices? JS: Yes. As a former apprentice, I am keen to help others onto the career ladder, so we actively employ and oversee our apprentices’ progression. Some of our former apprentices have secured full-time positions and have grown to become integral members of the team.

HIP: What lies ahead for Flame Heating Spares? JS: We are pushing on with our growth strategy and plan to launch further branches, including a number of outlets in Scotland, outside of our traditional North East roots. It is an exciting time for the firm as we gear up for further growth, with the ideal goal of expanding nationally.  For more information, visit the Flame Heating Spares website, at flameheatingspares.com

HOT FACTS WITH VIESSMANN Gas condensing boiler technology is changing, making installation and commissioning easier and improving boiler performance and energy efficiency. Here are four technologies worth looking out for…

SELF-CALIBRATING AUTOMATIC COMBUSTION CONTROLLER

This simplifies the boiler commissioning process by removing the need to make combustion-related settings manually. It also removes the need to manually change the gas valve or gas injector if the boiler has to be changed over from natural gas to LPG. Selfcalibrating combustion control also benefits the end user because it automatically adjusts the gas/air mixture to compensate for the fluctuations in gas quality that can negatively affect a boiler’s efficiency and reliability.

DYNAMIC PAUSE TIME OPTIMISATION

With the old-school approach of defined pause times, a burner remains off after each operating cycle until a minimum time period has elapsed and the boiler water temperature has fallen below a predefined limit. With dynamic pause time optimisation, however, pause times are matched to the rate at which water temperature increases during the switching interval. This improves efficiency by reducing the number of cycles and pre-purge phases, extending burner runtimes, and lowering standby losses due to low average boiler water temperatures.

PUSH-FIT CONNECTIONS

A new casing concept and an innovative tool-free push-fit system now make it possible to ready a Viessmann boiler for operation in just five simple steps. By installing the boiler on the bracket of the installation jig, all heating water and DHW pipes are already securely connected to the network without the need for clamps or soldering. The only threaded fitting necessary is in the gas connection. To see this, search ‘Viessmann 200-W step by step installation guide’ on YouTube: it’s a short film because the whole process only takes about one-and-a-half minutes!

 VISIT VIESSMANN.CO.UK

SMART ENERGY MANAGEMENT

The integral control units of domestic boilers now give more detailed information. A good example is the five-inch touchscreen of the Vitotronic control unit in Viessmann’s Vitodens 200-W boiler range. This provides continuous information about gas consumption and boiler power. It can also display information about solar yields and DHW cylinder loading status, temperature stratification, and temperature curves. Historic data is also easily retrievable.

The new Wilo Yonos-PICO

WILO SMALL CIRCULATING PUMPS: HIGH EFFICIENCY IN ACTION! Wilo was pleased to be able to help HIP by supplying a number of its latest Wilo Yonos-PICO pumps for the regional and final tasks in the recent annual HIP UK Heating Apprentice of the Year Competition. High efficiency small circulating pumps play a key role in all heating installations, whether as stand-alone pumps, integrated pumps in combi and system boilers or in under floor heating and renewable heating systems. Modern small circulators are simpler than ever to install and offer huge savings compared to old, uncontrolled pumps simply in terms of the lower energy requirements they have. The latest small pumps use around 90% less energy than their older counterparts. There are still millions of old pumps working every day around the UK that would benefit hugely from being replaced with a brand new pump.

Cost effective Although the technology in new high efficiency pumps is significantly more expensive than their predecessors, they can pay for themselves in as little as one year from the energy savings they bring – and with an annual life span of up to fifteen years that’s a huge cost saving over the life of the pump. All Wilo small circulators are ErP compliant and

selecting a Wilo pump effectively futureproofs the heating system you install it on.

There is loads of information on all things pumps at www.wilo.co.uk. It’s worth spending a while taking a closer look. There are helpful aids for heating installers available and you can download the Wilo App from the App Store for free, which gives you a lot of helpful information for day-to-day use.

The latest small pumps use around 90% less energy than their older counterparts.

The future These are exciting times for the heating sector and very exciting times for new entrants of the industry. Wilo wishes all apprentices and newly qualified heating engineers and plumbers a happy and successful career in a really worthwhile profession. The company looks forward to being able to help you all in the years ahead!  For further information visit wilo.co.uk

R E I R R E NEW T R E H G I H S E V I R D TRV S N O I T A T EXPEC Pegler Yorkshire has launched the new Terrier TRV, an evolution in the drive to provide greater flexibility, reliability and trust. “The installation and contractor network across the UK relies on their reputation and quality of service to meet their client’s and user’s expectations,” said Sindar Singh, valves and heating market manager for Pegler Yorkshire. “By evolving our most iconic brand, we are helping to deliver on these needs and drive even higher expectations of heating control.” The new Terrier TRV is set to revolutionise domestic heat control. The design addresses the needs of contractors, from its ease of installation through to meeting the demands of Building Regulations and energy performance.

In addition, it offers a more stylish option with a greater user experience. The areas in which the new Terrier TRV differs are Design, Operation and Performance.

THE DESIGN – a flawless slim profile which alters the airflow to an Active Air Flow Vent System whereby the elongated open vents along the body are now enclosed in favour of open vents on top. Tests have shown that this provides a much more efficient flow of air because of the focused air chamber. In addition, the body has been manufactured in a bright white colour with a larger easy grip and easy care surface finish. To accent the design a feature chrome trim has been added and to support the needs of a variety of tenants a clear colour temperature window, which offers high contrast icons and intuitive colour coded settings. THE OPERATION – this has been radically altered to provide a more intuitive low friction mechanism, which offers effortless turning, making it easy for any dexterity. The temperature settings have been designed to be more sensitive providing a ‘jump to setting’ operation, ensuring tenants can be assured the valve is working to the exact setting they choose. In addition, the thermal head incorporates an ECO touch indicator that makes setting the 3 alignments simple just by touch - ideal for those with visual impairments. Arguably the most radical change of the new Terrier is its performance. Enhanced by a pure

copper element the performance provides a faster response to temperature changes. The Active Air Flow system draws room temperature air through discreet side vents up around the copper element. The flow of warm air rises effortlessly through the unobscured and protected element and out through the vents on top. Technical tests have shown that the new Terrier provides even better accuracy for temperature settings with a 33% lower hysteresis. Therefore, reaching comfort levels in a significantly reduced time when compared with other TRVs on the market. The new Terrier TRV range is supplied suitable for 8, 10 and 15mm pipework and is also offered in a tamper-resistant option. It fully complies with the requirements of EN215 - the European standard that investigates the physical as well as operational characteristics of the product. It is also “A” rated under the TELL scheme and meets Part L requirements.

GRUNDFOS

THE OVER AND ABOVE SOLUTION PROVIDER Mention the brand name Grundfos to people, and most will immediately respond by saying heating circulators. However, there is much more to Grundfos than this and today they offer a surprisingly wide and increasingly sophisticated product portfolio.

This comprehensive range of products will provide you with the ultimate pump technology to match all of the various demands throughout the entire home. Plus, with Grundfos you can be sure any solution will deliver the optimal pump option that is reliable, innovative and that can be installed with minimal fuss.

We know that these products may not be quite as well known as the Grundfos UPS2 and ALPHA3 heating circulator ranges or indeed our family of SOLOLIFT macerators that have become increasingly popular in recent years. However, today Grundfos can also supply a range of additional pump ‘specialists’ that can meet a host of other specific demands.

Extended range of products This includes a range of shower booster and universal head shower booster pumps. These continuously rated pumps will minimise the turbulence within the pump head, which is a welcome feature. The SSR2 and STR2 ranges are positive head pumps for boosting water pressure, typically used in shower applications. The SSR2 and STR2 U n i ve r s a l options are positive and negative head shower booster pumps for boosting pressure where the outlet is at the same height as, or is above, the water storage tank.

Grundfos SCALA2 The latest kid on the block, and one that is creating a lot of interest, is the WRAS approved Grundfos SCALA2. Each unit is a fully integrated water booster pump that will provide the perfect water pressure to up to 8 water outlets – even with multiple taps and showers running at the same time. The SCALA2 combines the pump, motor, tank, sensor, drive and nonreturn valve in one neat package. So, when you next think of Grundfos, think of them as offering solutions over and above heating circulators.  Visit grundfos.co.uk to find out more.

INSTALLING AN IMPEY WETROOM This installation demonstrates how a simple and effective conversion can transform a dated bathroom into a modern, level-access wetroom.

ď‚Š Visit impeyshowers.com/easyfit

1A

1B

Firstly, the floor needs to be completely level when laying a wetroom floor former like the Impey AquaDec.

Use noggins to help achieve a level floor if necessary.

2

3

When laying the AquaDec floor former you will need to check where the pre-determined holes are placed so that you are able to screw them into the timber. The AquaDec needs no underboarding for joists in centres under 415mm.

The unique rotating waste plate can be positioned to avoid obstructions such as joists. Consider the positioning of the waste, especially if trimming the product to size.

4

5

Lay the waste base plate and pilot holes through the floor former, then screw the waste in.

Connect the sump up from underneath with one screw (hand tight only). Connect the existing waste pipe to the trap.

STEP BY STEP | AUTUMN ISSUE 2017 | HIP MAGAZINE

6

8

Prepare to tank the area by putting the supplied primer on the floor and on any porous walls up to 75mm. No primer is needed on the floor former. Wait until the primer is completely dry which usually takes about 20 minutes. If you use a sponge roller the primer may go off slightly quicker and save time.

Place the WaterGuard tanking membrane corner joint in first. Peel the backing off as you place it in situ to ensure you minimise any air pockets.

Leave 2mm at the corner and lay the long piece. Any overlap needs to be 75mm. Then measure 1m from the wall and mark the centre.

9

10

11

12

Use the WaterGuard main sheet membrane and cut to size.

Once you have laid the first sheet over the floor former, rub over the cutting guide to reveal where to run the knife to expose the waste.

Cut around it and remove the centre.

13

14

Run the butyl rubber sealant along all but the edges to seal the membrane to the jointing tape.

Lay the tiles, ensuring they are cut correctly to allow for the gradient in the AquaDec.

Use the knife to mark cuts. Then place the clamping ring back into the joint and screw in.

15

You now have a waterproof wetroom! Please note that we always recommend that the whole room needs tanking to provide an effective waterproof wetroom.

FINDING THE RIGHT MATCH When a boiler comes to the end of its life, it is often simply replaced like-for-like. However, apprentices and newly qualified installers should take a step back and consider all the options before recommending a new boiler, to ensure they specify a system that is fit for purpose.

Alpha E-Tec

Looking at hot water requirements in particular, a boiler needs to be able to efficiently heat enough water to quickly meet demand. For the majority of homes with average hot water demands, combi boilers are the most suitable solution, as they only provide hot water to outlets when it’s needed, meaning energy isn’t wasted.

Having the right boiler can have a significant impact on the comfort of living.

The wide waterways within the heat exchanger and a high efficiency Grundfos pump means the mains water is warmed up quickly for constant delivery of hot water. However, there are still occasions where a combi may not be the best choice – particularly when it comes to meeting hot water demands. For example, say the householder plans to extend and add more bathrooms; the output requirements will be larger. In these situations, a conventional

FlowSmart Another alternative is Alpha’s FlowSmart, which offers the best of both worlds. Alpha’s FlowSmart allows larger households to enjoy the energy saving qualities of a combi and the performance of a conventional boiler. FlowSmart uses approximately 25% less gas than a system boiler with a cylinder, but more than matches the hot water performance. Having the right boiler can have a significant impact on the comfort of living. Remember, if customers are on the lookout for a new boiler; conduct a thorough survey before specifying to ensure the right model is selected for the output demands of the property.  Visit alpha-innovation.co.uk

GAS SAFETY:

THE REVOLUTION Flammable gas was first recognised in the UK in 1667, according to the National Gas Museum, and as its uses were explored, considerations towards health and safety increased.

Gas safety milestones CORGI was founded in 1970 as a direct result of the Ronan Point event, and shortly after, we introduced the gas registration scheme, which became mandatory by law in 1991. This meant that installers were required to show evidence of their competence before being able to perform gas work, and the levels of safety increased for consumers. During the 17 years that CORGI gas registration was in place the number of domestic gas related fatalities fell from 30 to 12. And the Gas Safe Register (today’s regulator) has continued this momentum. The Gas Safety Trust’s research - which is funded by CORGI – identified that there were three carbon monoxide poisoning fatalities in 2014, and figures are decreasing each year. We strive for the day this reaches zero.

Considerations for today’s installer It took a disastrous event for the industry to wake up to the dangers and face its responsibilities, however. In 1968 a gas explosion blew out load-bearing walls in a 22-storey tower block at Ronan Point in East London. The corner of the building collapsed and sadly killed five people. Caitriona Deakin, CEO of CORGI Services, discusses how this disaster changed the face of the gas industry and shares advice for today’s installers.

It’s crucial that today’s installers understand the importance of becoming ‘Gas Safe Registered’ and that they renew it every 12 months, as it’s only valid for one year. In addition to this, it’s essential that installers are clued up on gas safety tips.

CORGI RECOMMENDS SHARING THE FOLLOWING WITH HOMEOWNERS:

1

Check all gas appliances including boilers, gas cookers and fires annually.

2

Check all appliances for warning signs to ensure they’re working correctly e.g. crisp blue ones instead of lazy yellow flames, black marks or stains on appliances and too much condensation in rooms.

3

Invest in audible carbon monoxide alarms and ensure they’re located near gas appliances.

4

Ensure that there’s enough ventilation for gas appliances to burn efficiently, and that vents are not blocked.

MADE IN BRITAIN:

200 YEARS OF ARMITAGE SHANKS Manufacturer Armitage Shanks marks its two-hundredth anniversary this year. Here HIP Magazine looks at the history – and the future – of this iconic British bathroom brand. Founded in 1817, the company emerged during a time when the lack of sanitation was so bad in the UK that life expectancy was only 40 years. The business has come a long way since then within the sanitation industry, with highlights including:  Being the first business to connect water closets to sewer systems, rapidly improving public sanitation  Building the first factory dedicated entirely to sanitaryware in 1851 in Armitage, Staffordshire  Generating influence that spread across the globe; by the 1890s, the business had offices in Australia, Amsterdam, Cape Town, Copenhagen, Hamburg, Warsaw and Brussels

Strong heritage And with 200 years of success behind it, Armitage Shanks has plenty of expertise to keep on innovating, ensuring it retains its place as the market leading sanitaryware provider in the commercial bathroom sector and healthcare bathroom sector.

Armitage Shanks has never stopped looking to and investing in the future, with a focus on utilising the latest in factory techniques, including the purchase of a £2.2m robot which is used to create innovative ceramic bathroom designs.

 Supplying sanitaryware to iconic ships, such as the Titanic and the Queen Mary  Adapting products and creating a virtuous glaze that made products more hygienic and durable. By the 1950s, all of its domestic products were made using virtuous glazes  Creating the original – and ironically ironic – avocado bath

While Armitage Shanks may be the last remaining large scale British manufacturer, it certainly isn’t a business stuck in the past. The brand looks forward to continuing to push bathroom boundaries in the future, growing alongside the latest group of trainee installers as the industry continues to develop.

IT'S ALL IN THE SALES TECHNIQUE

Vokèra Mynute

Neil Mattock, Marketing Director at Vokèra, explains why heating and plumbing students need to plan ahead and think about their future businesses. Whether you go on to start up your own company or join a larger business, you will be faced with the challenge of keeping upto-date with the shifting technology and legislation within the industry.

The role of an installer You must understand aspects such as modulation ratios, smart controls and ErP efficiency as well as maintaining a comprehensive understanding of the features and benefits of the various products on the market. However, this is only one of the challenges faced by those entering the industry.

On top of understanding the technical details, installers also need to put this sometimes complex information into easy-to-understand language for their customers and sell to them.

For many people outside of the industry, their understanding of the role of an installer is that it is limited to know-how, fitting and diagnostics. However, it is important to remember that an installer brings an additional toolkit along to every job, which not

only includes a fountain of knowledge, but also general communication and skills in sales.

Good communication is key Although working with people can often pose a challenge, skilful communication with customers from varying ages, backgrounds and levels of understanding is vital to a successful business. Understanding exactly how to communicate is down to the individual but manufacturers can offer help in making it as easy as possible to communicate the features and benefits of their products. In generating product materials that are easy to use, manufacturers can help installers sell to their customers.

facts are there, available to see with a single glance, saving precious time reading through lengthy product descriptions and boring homeowners with dull drawn-out paperwork.

Vokèra product icons For example, when Vokèra launches a new product, we ensure there is an extensive range of marketing support available to accompany the product. We’ve also been taking this a step further by creating feature and benefit icons that appear on all literature, which allow installers to easily identify the key aspects of each boiler. This in turn will help installers explain the features to their customers and support product selection. The new icons have simple and consistent imagery making it easy to identify what benefits it includes such as the cupboard fit icon and the text driven menu icon. All the

THE FUTURE IS BRIGHT Everyone is banging on about the skills gap, and it is true that we need more people to train as gas engineers. But to make this happen manufacturers need to join forces with higher education to make sure pupils are prepared for life outside of the classroom. Here Richard Green, Baxi’s training officer, explains how their partnership with Preston’s College works. Preston’s College is located near Baxi’s manufacturing centre in Bamber Bridge and support is provided in three ways: by providing equipment, training and factory tours.

The equipment Theory is important, but the most effective and enjoyable way to learn about boilers is to work on them and take them apart in a safe, controlled environment. The Baxi Training Centre has 12 working boilers and ten dry boilers which are replaced frequently so students can cut their teeth on the latest model. Once they’ve reached the end of their training lifecycle, the boilers are taken to the college’s workshop where students can take them apart and get a better understanding of individual components.

Plumbing & heating lecturer Andrew Whipp said: “Whatever level a student is at, the Centre is part of their education. Whether it’s simply touring the facility in the first year of a course, or attending active practical sessions in their third year, the Centre provides a very valuable learning resource for our students.”

The training Preston’s plumbing & heating second year students also get a full day’s session with a Baxi training expert. One of the challenges fully qualified gas engineers have is getting to grips with individual products, as what they fit is largely dictated

by customer requirements. This means an engineer could be fitting a Baxi combi boiler one week, and a heat only model from another manufacturer the next. Getting one-on-one time with an industryexperienced Baxi trainer means the students gain that all-important product knowledge, including insider tips that they might not necessarily receive in their usual sessions. The idea is when they’re fully qualified and working on their own, the students are familiar with the ins and outs of all models.

Getting one-on-one time with an industryexperienced Baxi trainer means the students gain that all-important product knowledge... The tour As well as practical training and advice, Preston’s students also get to witness every stage of the boiler manufacturing process. Not only does this give them a better understanding of the care and attention that goes into creating a new boiler, it also gives them a chance to preview technology currently in development.  Visit baxi.co.uk

UNDERFLOOR HEATING:

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW Steve Harris, Technical Support Engineer for Heating and Cooling at Wavin, gives his top tips on selecting and installing underfloor heating systems.

01

02

03

USING UNDERFLOOR HEATING

GET THE RIGHT INSTALLATION

KNOW YOUR TIME FRAMES

The most common type of underfloor heating systems are those which are installed in the floor, where a wet screed is being applied to create a new floor. In this type of installation, the pipework is laid over insulation and a waterproof membrane and then covered in screed, which distributes the heat evenly. For existing floors, there are a variety of panel products that can be used which sit on top of the floor, often referred to as ‘FLOATING FLOOR’ SYSTEMS. Finally, there are ‘JOISTED SYSTEMS’ that sit in between existing joists and can be fitted from above or below. These systems are well-suited to installations in the upper floors of a building.

There are three main types of underfloor heating installations – staple systems, system plates and panel systems. The way to install underfloor heating will vary depending on what type of system you are using. SYSTEM PLATES are plastic sheets with pre-formed grips to hold the pipe in place, allowing for fast installation. STAPLE SYSTEMS do not have the same pre-formed grips and therefore offer more flexibility when installing underfloor heating. To secure the pipe, simply staple it to the insulation panel before the screed is applied. You don’t need to lay any pipe when using PANEL SYSTEMS as the pipe is already installed within the panel.

Installation time varies from system to system but as a general rule of thumb, it takes no more than a day to lay the pipework for underfloor heating. It’s often assumed that installing underfloor heating systems on top of existing flooring is quicker than other installations, but this is not necessarily true. You may need to alter door heights and skirting boards to accommodate the increase in floor height, which ultimately means more building work.

Installation time varies from system to system...

AVOIDING A MANIFOLD NIGHTMARE

With storage space at a premium in modern homes, Underfloor Heating (UFH) installations are being affected as they rely on centrally-located storage spaces to house manifolds. Failing to position these critical components correctly will result in a greater outlay on materials. Toby-Howard Willis, Technical Sales Manager at JG Speedfit, looks at the impact of manifold positioning on UFH system performance.

The function of a manifold is to distribute water around a circuit via a number of valves.

Positioning a manifold The correct positioning of manifolds is essential in UFH systems. A manifold located at one end of a house requires significant force to distribute water to the side furthest away. Ideally, the circuit lengths of pipe to each zone should be 100m per circuit, which would allow for certain distance to get to and from that room. A poorly positioned manifold would increase the distance to and from a room, reducing the available floor area for pipe. When the distance from the pipe to the manifold exceeds a certain point, another manifold, pump pack, and wiring centre may be needed to provide the required level of force, incurring additional cost.

Storage space issues As hot water is taken from the boiler, it is broken down into individually controllable rooms or zones. This level of control ensures heating is only activated when and where it is required. To achieve this, each zone must have an individual supply coming from the manifold and the flow of water is then regulated via an actuator. Thermostats are also added to each room to control the actuators.

Older houses tend to have more storage

...manifolds must be housed centrally and should be accessible later to allow for maintenance. space. As open plan designs have grown in popularity, this has limited the amount of storage space on offer. In the absence of available space, a manifold will have to be stored in a less central location within the house, hampering system performance. Installers should remember that manifolds must be housed centrally and should be accessible later to allow for maintenance. A building design that allows for these conditions to be met enhances the desirability of a property, as owners can enjoy significant cost and energy savings over time. ď‚Š For more information visit: Speedfitufh.co.uk

FLUXUATOR STEP-BY-STEP The Fluxuator has an innovative dosing head which ensures an even coverage of flux to copper pipes with every application. ď‚Š For further information visit fluxuator.co.uk

TO START

1

2

Cut the copper pipe and remove burrs or sharp edges from the ends of the pipe. Oxidized surfaces should be cleaned before applying flux. The flux contained is a self cleaning flux.

Remove the yellow cap from the refill tube and screw the tube tightly to the bottom of the dosing head. Use the cap on the bristle head after use to protect the head.

Turn the dial in a clockwise motion to the fill line, to dose the bristle head.

3

4

TO FINISH

For hard to reach areas, unscrew the brush from the back of the Fluxuator and collect flux from the bristle head. Apply flux in an even layer all the way around the pipe.

Push the pipe and fitting together, remove any excess flux with a rag. Heat the joint with a blowtorch and feed the solder as normal. Flush the piping system once the job is complete. When the brushes are low on flux, 1-2 clicks should be enough to effectively dose the bristle head.

When applying flux, position the bristle head over the pipe and twist back and forth 90 degrees until there is an even coverage of flux.

KEEPING ON TOP OF THE CHANGES There is a lot of talk at the moment when it comes to changes to apprenticeships, including levy charges, trailblazers, pathways, levels and routes. Maintaining standards Good practice must be shared and standards must be upheld, however some things need to stay. One example is the core assessment requirements. For instance, the Level 3 gas route requires you to work with every type of gas system past and present, so you complete a number of practical tasks in a realistic working environment (RWE). These are hugely important to your training because they give you essential experience working with less familiar gas system components that you won’t be able to find at work. These tasks do not need a gas assessment centre, just a safe place for you to carry out tasks. They are, in fact, a great way to gain experience with unfamiliar materials (like corrugated stainless steel pipe) or old-fashioned appliances (flueless or open-flued appliance).

We believe it’s fundamentally important to build a good relationship between assessor and student by ensuring we work with students on an individual basis.

Professional support At PACE assessment we know NVQ & onsite assessment, and continue supporting apprentices moving into the construction industry. PACE offers a personalised coherent programme. We believe assessment should be done well and in a holistic fashion. That way we can cover ground faster and won’t compromise quality. Strategy is encouraged by awarding organisations and has improved success rates and customer experience amongst apprentices and employers. After all, your boss wants you to pass ASAP and get onto the more complex work he’s going to be paying for. There is also always room for improvement. The importance of a collaborative, coherent quality process is essential to your success. At PACE we continue to develop our own assessors to better support you, the student. Our quality assurance supports students and protects national standards. Together we are better.  Visit paceassessment.ac

HIP MAGAZINE | AUTUMN ISSUE 2017 | SPONSORED FEATURE

SETTING THE STANDARD Matthew Quelch, an External Quality Assurer with EAL, the specialist awarding organisation for industry, highlights the benefits of qualifications. There has been much talk about changes in the education system with the introduction of new apprenticeship standards and the need or otherwise for the inclusion of qualifications. Employers in electrical and plumbing trades want to see tangible evidence that someone is job-ready – that’s why they value qualifications. For those looking to enter these trades, a pre-employment qualification is a great way to demonstrate commitment to their career path – giving employers further confidence that taking them on will be a worthwhile investment.

With future industry skills in high demand, EAL's technical qualifications have been designed to inspire and encourage young people to choose careers in engineering, electrical installation and plumbing.

They are an ideal solution for schools, colleges and training providers wanting to offer learners a fully recognised, technical qualification as well as seamless progression to current relevant apprenticeships.

The EAL Level 2 Intermediate Diploma in Plumbing (qualification number 601/4562/6) is predominantly for 16-19 year old learners in full time education. It has been designed in partnership with employers for learners to complete during the first year of a study programme, allowing them to progress to the UCAS accredited EAL Level 3 Advanced Diploma in Plumbing and Heating (qualification number 601/4567/5).

The qualification provides learners with practical experience of plumbing and places them in situations they could face on the job.

Using a combination of practical workshops and theory sessions, assessment includes externally set and marked examinations, centre marked assignments / practical tests, and a final assessment.

Work experience is encouraged and employers should be involved in delivery and / or assessment of the qualification to help enrich the learning experience and provide a clear line of sight to work. As with all EAL qualifications, the criteria is regularly reviewed and refreshed to make sure it is up to date with current industry needs. It is a qualification which is growing in popularity and trusted by those working in the trade.

SERIES MH BALANCING VALVE ASSISTS IN EFFICIENT UFH SYSTEMS

INTELLIGENT HEATING MADE SIMPLE WITH NEW DANFOSS ECOTM

Set to revolutionise balancing issues experienced in multi residential or multi room applications, the Series MH underfloor heating manifold from Watts UK will simplify hydraulic balancing and flow control in radiant heating systems, delivering energy savings and comfort for users. The manifold allows the flow rate in each circuit to remain constant. This will stop the fluctuation experienced in other manifolds where changes in demand require constant balancing of the individual loops which often consist of differences in length and diameter, giving different flow and pressures, resulting in a fluctuating unbalanced system. Series MH displays the actual flow on the flow meters integrated in the manifold.

The new Eco provides effortless heating control using the Danfoss Eco App to program individual radiator thermostats via Bluetooth technology. Offering an easy and cost-effective transition to intelligent heating for homes and small commercial premises, Eco ensures optimum comfort and potential savings of up to 30% on heating bills. In addition to the energy saving benefits for end-users, Danfoss Eco is purposedesigned to be fast and simple to install by a professional heating installer in new and replacement applications.
