Here at HIP Magazine, we thought there was no better way to celebrate the start of 2017 than by bringing you a fantastic new issue for you to feast your eyes on. In this Winter Issue we were lucky enough to speak to Gary Doyle, who has not only been officially recognised as the ‘World’s best plumber’ in the WorldSkills competition, but who is also the youngest person ever to be awarded a BEM by the Queen. You can also read all about the colleges who are hosting the HIP UK Heating Apprentice of the Year Competition regional heats. If you have entered the competition, we will see you at one of these seven locations! The regional heats begin on Tuesday 17th January at Newcastle College and we can’t wait to see the plumbing and heating engineers of the next generation demonstrate their skills. You’ll find our regular features in here too, including our popular Hall of Shame. You can also read about the latest apps and read some of our favourite Tweets from the past few months in ‘Tweet All About It’. Don’t forget to test your knowledge with the exercises towards the back – you can find all of the answers, along with industry news, videos and more on our website.

INTRODUCING THE NEW-LOOK FERNOX WEBSITE

In October, Graham Plumbers’ Merchant used its Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) Day to promote the importance of health and wellbeing to its customers and staff. The annual event, introduced in 2000, also provided the opportunity to support the work of Alzheimer’s Research UK and SANE – Graham’s together charity partners for 2016. At Graham branches across the country, customers were reminded of simple ways to stay healthy and reduce stress. The EHS day also gave visitors the opportunity to check their blood pressure and complete a lifestyle health check to identify any areas where improvements could be made. The focus of the day was to inspire small changes that could have lasting health benefits.

Chemical water treatment and filter manufacturer Fernox has unveiled its new website. With dedicated sections for installers, merchants, OEMs and consumers, the site is fast and easy to navigate and access via smart phones and tablets. The website features the latest product news and acts as a hub of information with interactive functionality within a couple of clicks. HIP MAGAZINE | WINTER ISSUE 2017 | SPONSORED FEATURE

CAN YOU TALK THE TALK? Communication is perhaps the most fundamental and underestimated skill required by installers to ensure they are able to do their job to the best possible standard. Not only does good communication build a rapport with customers, but more importantly it helps create a relationship built on trust, which is essential for securing repeat work and driving business success.

Simple message For the last few years, the industry as a whole has been working hard to reinforce the importance of annual boiler servicing and the latest research undertaken by ADEY Professional Heating Solutions suggests this simple maintenance message could be starting to resonate with homeowners.

Although our survey of 2,000 UK homeowners reveals that more than a quarter (28%) hadn’t had their boiler serviced in the past 12 months, this was down by 10% compared to research we conducted in 2014/15 when more than a third of people had decided to forego an annual service.

However, our research also shows that many installers could be missing opportunities for some easy business wins. For example, 43% of homeowners surveyed said that they’d had a new boiler fitted in the last five years but the installer hadn’t provided any advice on how to maintain and protect their heating system to ensure it ran efficiently for as long as possible.

Installing influence Starting a conversation with homeowners needn’t be difficult and there are some fundamental and factual things to ask; is their boiler warranty intact? Is their boiler working safely? Has it been checked recently? If the answer is ‘no’ to any of these, then the likelihood is that they’ll need some help managing and protecting the health of their heating system, and ADEY Professional

Heating Solutions’ award-winning Best Practice™ approach of clean, flush, maintain, protect and test makes this as easy as possible for installers. Each of these steps can be clearly explained and demonstrated to homeowners, showing how they deliver moneysaving and energy efficiency benefits.

There are many tools at an installer’s disposal, which will help them with their conversations with homeowners. It’s not something that should be shied away from if you want to highlight how effective a programme of planned service and maintenance can be at reducing energy bills, carbon emissions and ensuring boiler safety. Your customers will reap the benefits and in turn so will your business: a win-win situation.  For more information visit adey.com

GARY DOYLE: A WORLD CHAMPION

INTERVIEW | WINTER ISSUE 2017 | HIP MAGAZINE

15

In August last year, Gary Doyle, 21, won the coveted title of ‘World’s best plumber’ in the famous WorldSkills Competition. He studied plumbing at the Southern Regional College in Newry, Co. Down and completed his plumbing apprenticeship in June 2015. After he graduated, he continued to work for his apprentice employer for another 6 months before starting up a small plumbing business, Hillview Plumbing Ltd, along with his brother.

HIP: How would you explain the WorldSkills Competition to someone who has never heard of it before? GD: WorldSkills is a bi-annual, international skills competition where young people from all over the world come together to compete against one another in their professional field. The competition is held over the course of four days where peers chosen to represent their country participate in demonstrating their technical abilities by executing challenging tasks, competing to win a WorldSkills medal.

HIP: What made you enter it? GD: My college really promoted the benefit of skills competitions and encouraged students to get involved. I enjoyed taking part in the Northern Ireland competition ‘Skill Build NI’, and I was encouraged to keep competing when I attained a gold medal when I was just 16 years old. The UK competitions followed on from the Northern Ireland competitions and then finally I was lucky enough to be selected as the UK representative for the UK team in the Plumbing and Heating category. HIP: How did you find the whole experience? GD: Overall, the entire experience was absolutely unbelievable. Over the four-day period, my skills were put to the ultimate test. As I was up against the best young apprentices in the world, I was ‘pushed’ to perform to my potential.

all over England during training and I have met some wonderful people who competed in my field and also those who are the best in other skills areas. All the competitors were really talented, so it was a brilliant experience to be surrounded by people who were so enthusiastic and ambitious. That gives you motivation to be the best you can be. HIP: How did it feel to win and how did you celebrate your win? GD: It was an amazing feeling to win after all the hard work I had put into the various skills competitions, and to be able to share my win with those people who had provided great support along the way, not least my tutor Ronnie Ferris and my family. When I arrived back home from Brazil, my family met me at the airport and then held a surprise party for me with all my relatives, friends, my employer and tutors from college.

HIP: What has it brought to your life as a plumber? GD: The WorldSkills competition improves your skills immensely as you get to try many new areas that would normally not have been presented in everyday work. It is also great to see how other competitors from all over the world may approach tasks slightly differently, so the whole experience is a huge learning curve and allows you to become even better in your skills area.

HIP: How does it feel to have a British Empire Medal at such a young age? What was that experience like? GD: It was obviously a huge shock for me

when I received a letter to inform me that I was to be included in the Queens Honour Birthday List. I felt honoured to learn I would be receiving this most prestigious award, and extra special when I realised that I was not only the youngest person on the 2016 honours list, but also the youngest ever to be awarded a BEM. The day I received the medal was a proud occasion, especially for my Mum and Dad. It was certainly a day which I will never forget. HIP: What’s your favourite thing about being a plumber? GD: Within the plumbing industry there is such a wide range of work you can be involved in, and my work load can include working on industrial projects such as schools, hospitals and apartment blocks right through to the opposite end of the plumbing spectrum, carrying out installation of plumbing and heating systems in residential houses. There is a satisfaction in completing complex piping systems in industrial work, and it is rewarding when a private homeowner is pleased with the work you’ve completed for them. HIP: What is your view on apprenticeships? GD: I think that apprenticeships are really important. They give you the opportunity to get hands-on experience and earn a salary whilst studying and obtaining the qualification in your chosen field. HIP: Have you got any advice for current students? GD: My advice to current students would be to work hard and the results will be rewarding. Also, wherever possible, students should get involved in skills competitions: they can really open doors.

HIP: What was the best part? GD: It’s hard to pick one aspect because it’s really the whole experience of being involved in the UK Team that makes it so exceptional, but I really enjoyed the travelling and meeting other competitors. I had the privilege of travelling to Brazil, Germany & Switzerland as well as

...it was a brilliant experience to be surrounded by people who were so enthusiastic and ambitious.

Vaillant is set to provide installers with added flexibility with the launch of ecoFIT pure, a new generation of boilers that offers varied siting options and ease of installation.

A PURE APPROACH TO HEATING Offering a choice of rear and top flue options and a compact, cupboard-fit footprint, the ecoFIT pure provides maximum output. The boiler also offers a standard DIN layout and a built-in filling loop to reduce labour time when carrying out a boiler replacement.

In addition to high quality, longlife components, the ecoFIT pure incorporates a clear LED display to make installation and use in dimly lit areas even easier. Removable side panels and recognisable Vaillant fault codes have also been incorporated into the design to assist with efficiency of maintenance.

Vaillant advance app

Features The ecoFIT pure features a high quality, lightweight aluminium heat exchanger with water channels to reduce the risk of blockages and four-sided cooling to ease stress on the heat exchanger, increasing its life span and sand casting to deliver better corrosion resistance.

To support the installation further, the new Vaillant Advance app offers members a fault code finder for easy diagnosis of common faults. Spencer Clark, Commercial Director for One Off Sales at Vaillant comments: “Each aspect of the ecoFIT pure has been developed to ease the workload of installers, whilst providing homeowners with a reliable, highly efficient heating system that can be sited in a number of locations within their property.

The ecoFIT pure is also compatible with Vaillant’s range of accessories and controls...

Advance loyalty scheme “Furthermore, installers who are members of the Advance loyalty scheme can also enjoy benefits when they purchase, install and register an ecoFIT pure product, such as exclusive extended warranty options, rewards in the form of both cashback and credits, and access to free product training and e-learning courses.”

Compatibility The ecoFIT pure is also compatible with Vaillant’s range of accessories and controls including the vSMART intelligent control and mobile app, which allows homeowners to control their home heating and hot water. The control, which can be managed remotely through the vSMART app features the ability to store multiple heating profiles, utilises online weather compensation technology which adapts energy usage to outside conditions and the ability to change according to users’ living habits. The vSMART ensures that only the minimum amount of energy is ever used to reach the desired temperature. The ecoFIT pure is available as a combination, system and open vent boiler across a range of outputs.  Visit vaillant.co.uk

HIP MAGAZINE | WINTER ISSUE 2017 | SPONSORED FEATURE

SANIFLO ENJOYS XL SUCCESS Saniflo’s latest and largest lifting station, the Sanicubic XL, is successfully meeting the requirements of a wide range of applications including hospitality, luxury apartments, leisure, offices, power stations and even off-shore oil rigs. The 120-litre unit, which operates with vortex technology, offers a swift and efficient discharge of large volumes of black waste water from multiple appliances, enabling it to be used in large scale commercial projects.

Benefits One of the great benefits of this pump is its ease of installation. The floor-standing unit doesn’t need to be positioned below ground and can therefore be placed on the floor ready for connection with no need for expensive or time-consuming excavations. With IP68 rating the Sanicubic XL is fully protected against submersion in water. Three of the pumps have recently been temporarily installed in a new development of luxury flats in London.

Each unit is sited in the basement, which will eventually become an underground garage, and takes the waste from a row of toilet cubicles and shower rooms, which have been erected for the use of the construction workers during the 2-year build phase. The facilities are located on the floor above the basement, which does not yet have drainage infrastructure. All waste is pumped from the XL to existing sewage drains located at street level.

Use in commercial projects In Chester and Orpington two new restaurants feature the XLs for waste discharge from the kitchen areas, as well as the bathroom facilities. These are ideal units for these particular sites because any chance of clogging is virtually eliminated.

The vortex breaks down waste as it enters the pump chamber and then passes through discharge pipework of either 80mm or 100mm width to connect to mains drains. The ability to pump waste – up to 40m³/ hour – simultaneously from the showers, sauna and WCs, plus the continuity of operation from 2 x 2kW pumps has enabled a gym in Dublin to operate efficiently ever since the XL was installed. Further units have been installed at power stations, off-shore oil rigs and office premises, highlighting their flexibility and versatility to work in places that would otherwise struggle to discharge waste via traditional means.  Visit saniflo.co.uk

PUT AN END TO ‘PRESSING’ JOBS WITH A COMBINED TOOLKIT As the rise of more modern jointing techniques such as push and press continues, Pegler Yorkshire has launched a combined toolkit that gives installers the right equipment to speed up installations. Phill Jackson, marketing and business development director said: “Each installation brings its own challenges but the key is being able to adapt. Our newly launched toolkit provides all the essential equipment for installers to be able to adapt their installation as the job dictates whether that is via push, press or a combined approach.”

What's included? The Pegler Yorkshire Toolkit includes everything an installer needs for a push or press system installation;

Pegler Yorkshire has also recently launched an Installer Club, which offers cash back or money off products. a REMS 3-35mm pipe cutter suitable for Copper, Carbon and Stainless, 15, 22 and 28mm Jaws, 15-108mm XPress Copper Depth Gauge, Tectite Sprint and Tectite Classic Depth Gauge and Deburrer, 15mm Multi-layer Tube Straightener and 10-28mm tube cutter for use with PEX and Multi-layer tube. In addition, there are demount clips, mini press tool, spare battery and dri-slide. Phill continued: “Today’s installers are well aware of the benefits a heat free installation can bring and are in tune with alternating their methods depending on the job. Many are happy to use a press system until it gets to

a confined space when switching to a push method will make life easier. Both methods provide excellent sealing as you would expect from a quality fitting.” Those are primarily found in metal fittings, which are a product of choice of those installers who demand high performing and reliable fittings. Whether push or press, a quality metal fitting can be easily identified via its inherent attributes such as Pegler Yorkshire’s XPress unique Leak Before Press design that allows installers to instantly identify unpressed joints and Tectite’s patented TectSEAL, directional seals pre-lubricated for reduced insertion force and the provision of a reliable seal. Phill concluded: “The new Pegler Yorkshire Toolkit provides those installers already combining metal push and press technology with a comprehensive and handy toolbox full with everything needed to complete an installation. Yet it can also be a great starter kit for those that are yet to use one or both methods.” Additionally, Pegler Yorkshire has also recently launched an Installer Club, which offers cash back or money off products.  Visit pegleryorkshire.co.uk

HIP MAGAZINE | WINTER ISSUE 2017 | SPONSORED FEATURE

Despite the specific risks inherent to plumbing and heating work, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is often either not considered or frequently disregarded by installers. Jason Smith, Category Director at Graham Plumbers’ Merchant, looks at some of the PPE required for you to be adequately protected.

GETTING PROTECTION RIGHT FROM THE START

 PPE IS EQUIPMENT THAT PROTECTS THE USER FROM ANY OCCUPATIONAL RISKS OR HAZARDS ENCOUNTERED IN THEIR DAY-TO-DAY JOB. IT’S IMPORTANT TO BE AWARE OF THE FOLLOWING:

1

2

3

When cutting or grinding pipes, eye protection should always be worn to protect the user from flying shards of metal or plastic. Prescription glasses do not offer an adequate level of protection so it is always advisable to use safety glasses that offer full coverage, including the sides.

Relatively short-term use of equipment that produces high levels of noise can result in damage to hearing, such as drilling into concrete or stone. For these tasks foam earplugs or ear defenders should always be used.

Respiratory conditions are one of the most common categories of workrelated illness in the UK. Installers can be exposed to a number of potentially dangerous substances in the course of their work. A variety of facemasks, hoods and helmets are available depending on the level of Respiratory Protective Equipment (RPE) required.

4

5

The extreme heat required when soldering or brazing pipe means that safety gloves are essential to prevent burns, not only from the heat source itself but also from the heated surface of the pipe. Gloves that combine heat protection with cut resistance will also protect the user’s hands and wrists from sharp edges when handling materials.

Finally, kneepads are a key piece of the kit that is often overlooked. Protecting the knees will help make the work easier, more comfortable and less damaging in the long term.

As equipment will be used every day, it is important to select PPE that fits well and is comfortable to use and it’s essential to make PPE part of the routine for every task, as even ‘quick jobs’ can present a serious risk. Graham Plumbers’ Merchant offers a full range of PPE and the team in branch can provide help and advice to ensure installers select equipment that is right for them.  Visit grahamplumbersmerchant.co.uk or grahamturningpro.co.uk

SMART IDEAS FROM BAXI The growth of the Internet of Things means nowadays almost any appliance can be a smart one – including the household boiler.

Smart boilers offer homeowners better control of their heating, enabling them to make adjustments to the temperature of their home remotely with a swipe of their smartphone or tablet. The good news is that meeting homeowner demand for smart heating can still add up to easy, stress-free installations for the installer. Manufacturers like Baxi are working on products, which not only deliver on the smart functions homeowners want, but are also designed with the needs of the installer in mind for fast, fuss-free fits.

Efficient new combi boilers Baxi recently launched the Baxi 200 and 400 high efficiency combi boilers. Their compact design makes them easy to install, plus they are optimised for smart use. And Baxi knows they are hassle-free to install, because installers have helped to design them.

Specifications Weighing just 26kg, the Baxi 200 and 400 boilers are extra-light, making them easy to manoeuvre, and each one comes with a hanging bracket and accessible electrical

The big selling point for the Baxi 200 and 400 is that they are optimised for smart use... connections. There is a range of flue lengths, bends and accessories for both models, making it even easier to tailor the installation to the available space.

The boilers come in outputs of 24kW and 28kW and are small enough to fit in a kitchen cupboard making them an attractive option for many different homes.

The big selling point for the Baxi 200 and 400 is that they are optimised for smart use, so that end users can control the boilers from wherever they are, using a smart control, which they can operate with their tablet or

smartphone. This can help reduce energy use, save money on household bills and improve comfort for the homeowner.

For extra peace of mind, the Baxi 400 is available with a five-year parts and labour warranty, and the 200 comes with a three-year parts and labour warranty.

The new boilers are available exclusively from independent merchants and free hands-on product training is available at Baxi training centres nationwide.

STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE CORAM OPTIMA QUADRANT ENCLOSURE Coram Showers is an established UK manufacturer of showering solutions, renowned for its installer-friendly range of products, including enclosures, trays and accessories. Combining contemporary features with clever installation benefits, Coram products are the ideal choice for both installers and end users.  For further information visit coram.co.uk

THE POPULAR CORAM OPTIMA QUAD CAN BE FULLY INSTALLED BY ONE PERSON, IN JUST FORTY-FIVE MINUTES! HERE’S HOW:

1

2

3

Once you have fitted the shower tray and ensured that it’s level in all directions, fix the wall-channels to the walls and cover over the screws using the chrome caps provided for a neat finish.

Next, place the bottom rail onto the tray with its end mouldings inserted into the wall-channels, ensuring that there is an equal gap at each end. The fixed panels can then be inserted. Slide them down to slot into the end mouldings at the bottom rail.

Next, position the top rail above the fixed-panels. Check that the doorframe is vertical and screw into position ensuring it is centrally positioned between the wall-channels.

4

5

6

Now it’s time to tighten the fixed-panel bracket grub screws. Then fit the flipper seals on to the edge of the panels, these are supplied pre-cut to save time.

The doors can easily be attached with preassembled push fit rollers. They also feature quick-release wheels for easy cleaning and double-wheel runners at top and bottom. Cam adjusters at the top may need to be altered slightly to enable the magnetic shield to meet evenly when the doors are closed.

Attach the modern polished-steel straight-bar handles and smart chrome profile cover-caps, then complete the installation by sealing the enclosure.

THE WARM GLOW OF COMPETITION Joanne Iceton, Head of Communications at EAL and Semta says it is time for more young heating engineers and plumbing apprentices to put themselves in the frame. I never cease to be amazed by the fantastic talent working in engineering companies of all sizes right across the UK - brilliant enthusiastic apprentices, higher apprentices and graduates making a valuable contribution to their employers while learning their trade from more experienced colleagues. We need their help to highlight just what a fulfilling career can be had in engineering whatever your background or gender.

Owen Boswell

It is a fact that industry requires 100,000 new graduates in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects every year until 2020 just to maintain current employment numbers.

Industry competitions One of the ways we support this aim is through the engineering WorldSkills UK competitions at the Skills Show at the NEC, Birmingham in November, where competitors who have won through from regional heats get the chance to compete against each other for gold medals and a place in the international WorldSkills finals being held in Abu Dhabi in 2017 and Kazan, Russia two years later.

Are you eligible to enter?

semta.org.uk/worldskills-uk Joanne Iceton

Plumber Owen Boswell, an EAL learner, made it through to the national final last

year and though he didn’t win, he found it an incredible experience. “It is a pretty proud moment for me to get this far,” said Owen. “I had to make a towel rail, two radiators out of copper, a shower and basin all piped up to the boiler so it is pretty similar to what I do in my day job.” We also want to see more plumbers and heating engineers showcase their talents in the Semta Skills Awards, which are handed out to those judged to be the Best in British Engineering by a panel of independent industry experts. We are very proud of all our winners, who have all gone on to be excellent role models, but we need more like them – so turn up the heat, put yourself in the spotlight and showcase your talents so we can get more into the industry who are just like you.  To find out more visit eal.org.uk or semta.org.uk/skillsawards

HOT FACTS WITH VIESSMANN With ever increasing fuel bills, it's important that we all look for ways to save fuel and carbon emissions and money for homeowners.

All gas boilers now must be condensing boilers, which represents a huge step forward in environmentally friendly heating, with fuel savings of up to 35% compared to conventional boilers. However, not all boilers are commissioned to condense. If heating flow temperature is above 65°C then the boiler is likely to never condense. With weather compensation controls added the boiler will condense and save even more energy up to 15% in fact.

For a relatively small investment, homeowners not only save up to 15% more fuel each year but they will also enjoy an incredibly comfortable home with a pleasant indoor temperature - whatever the weather.

Weather compensation controls work by ensuring that the boiler burns the exact amount of fuel required to match the heat lost from the building. The house will always be at the desired temperature, not too hot and not too cold, as the peaks and troughs of a standard thermostat are ironed out.

JACK INSTALLS HIS VAILLANT PRIZE The HIP UK Heating Apprentice of the Year 2016 Winner Jack Miller was lucky enough to bag himself some incredible prizes as a result of his triumphant victory at the Grand Final in March last year. Amongst those was a brand new boiler kindly donated as a prize by Vaillant. We caught up with him to see how he got on installing it… “Vaillant, one of the main competition sponsors, very generously donated a boiler to me which I was able to put to great use in my partner’s parents’ house. I kept in regular contact with a Vaillant representative who was very helpful when I had to choose the right product for the property. Once I had a spec for the job, Vaillant was very quick to have the product shipped out to me. The job involved removing an old inefficient back boiler unit system and replacing it with the high efficiency ecoTEC plus 825 combination boiler. Installation of the ecoTEC plus was quick and easy which is a big bonus for us engineers and I was able to use a stand off bracket to allow me to pipe up behind the boiler because of space issues which gave an all-round neater finish. Commissioning was a dream thanks to the installer menu which allows you to tweak the boiler to suit the system perfectly. "Accompanied by a scale reducer and MagnaClean Pro 2 as well as a 5-year warranty, it gives both installers and customers great trust in the product. The boiler looks great and performs great and is surprisingly quiet even at full rate. I would recommend Vaillant to anyone looking to upgrade their heating system. "I'd just like to say a massive thank you to everyone involved with HIP for organising such a great competition and giving us installers a chance to showcase our skills. I loved the whole competition from start to finish and was able to meet some fantastic people along the way right from Durham down to Cheltenham. The standard of work from all the lads was outstanding and to be named the winner was a real honour and a real confidence booster. "A special thank you to the sponsors who help this great competition take place and for donating all those prizes. Long may it continue.”

You are taking a risk too putting your trust in them, hoping they are going to show you the skills and provide the experience you need to fulfil your apprenticeship.

Corrosion and limescale are bad news for heating systems, potentially causing a number of costly and inconvenient problems such as boiler or component failure, premature parts replacement, loss of energy efficiency, excessive noise, and loss of boiler warranty. For heating and plumbing engineers this could lead to call-backs and unhappy customers.

The free Water Treatment Starter Pack comprises of Sentinel’s best-selling X800 Fast Acting Cleaner, flagship X100 Inhibitor, and system testing tools, all of which enable users to clean and protect a heating system to the highest standards, and confirm to the customer that the job has been done correctly. For a training pack, email Sentinel at customer.services@sentinelprotects.com

SPOTTING A ZOMBIE HEATING SYSTEM Richard Harvey, Category Director for Heating at Plumb Center, looks at the issues presented by zombie heating systems and reveals how to spot the living dead in your customers’ homes.

Common zombie indicators:  Noise - This can be caused by low pressure, the fan or pump becoming worn or a blocked pipe 

Tired radiators - homeowners often hang on to their radiators just as they do their boilers even if they aren’t working efficiently

Shoddy pipes – radiators can have a reduced heat output as a result of poorly maintained pipes and this is why water treatment is essential

Photos sourced from Twitter

New technologies take on zombie systems

Installers need to be on the lookout for old inefficient boilers in their customer’s homes and see them as an opportunity to upsell and optimise the heating system as a whole, rather than just the individual components.

By being aware of the indicators of a poorly performing boiler – or zombie boiler - installers can steer the sales conversation to a replacement boiler that offers fuel efficiency and cost savings.

Boilers on the blink Most installers will be familiar with customer reluctance to invest in a new boiler if their current model works. But, as the years pass boilers have to work harder to heat the homes, leading to escalating costs and a greater risk of malfunction.

...fitting the correct heating controls can shave up to 40% off a home’s heating bill.

Controls are the simple method to enhance the energy efficiency of a heating system. Simply fitting the correct heating controls can shave up to 40% off a home’s heating bill. The Energy-related Product directive (ErP) has led to a surge in heating controls, opening up an exciting market to the installer. Thermostats and TRVs are an affordable solution to regulating temperature and reducing energy bills. Zoned controls are another simple cost-saving measure by avoiding overheating parts of a home that are unoccupied such as spare rooms. It is important that installers are able to spot indicators that systems aren’t working as efficiently as possible. They can then accurately prescribe the suitable filters and chemicals needed to ensure the boiler and heating system perform reliably.  Visit: plumbcenter.co.uk or partscenter.co.uk for more information on products to tackle zombie systems.

HIP HIP P

Health and Safety may sound dull when you’re having to learn it in college, but when you’re out on the tools – and even when you’re not – it could be the most important thing you ever learn.

HERO HERO HE RO

Here at HIP Magazine, we found HIP Heroes who saved two people’s lives by following the correct emergency procedure when they were forced into action.

 RICHARD SMITH, 52 GAS ENGINEER Richard has been a gas engineer for around 30 years and runs his own business, Arden Gas Services.

 CHRIS SPENCER, 20 APPRENTICE GAS ENGINEER Chris, from Stockport, is currently completing his Level 2 at the Greater Manchester Skills Centre and is doing his apprenticeship at the Dodd Group. “The lad I was working with usually works on his own, but I happened to be with him that day. “He said he felt ill: he looked pale, had a bad headache and kept saying that he had chest pains. When we set off on our next job, he pulled over so I could get him a bottle of water. When I came back he was slumped over the steering wheel and saying he could feel a tingle in his left arm. “You never really think you’re going to use your health and safety training, but you just never know. I called an ambulance immediately and the paramedics were with him in two minutes. He was sort of asleep – it was a strange thing to witness. “I found out at 7pm that night that he was OK because his wife phoned me to let me know.”

 If you know of any other HIP Heroes please let us know by emailing

editor@sng-publishing.co.uk

“I was at a house to service two gas fires. When I had removed the first gas fire in the kitchen to inspect the old brick chimney it was connected to, I noticed the chimney was blocked with twigs. I told the homeowner that the chimney would require sweeping before the fire could be re-instated. He said he would sweep the chimney himself whilst I serviced the front room fire. “As I was about halfway through, I heard a cry for help from the kitchen from the homeowners wife: he had suddenly gone very pale. I sat with him whilst she rang 999 as he had a heart condition and needed an ambulance. “As I sat down to try and calm him, he collapsed on his side and started getting paler by the second. His distraught wife thrust the phone in my hand so I could speak to the 999 operator. “I was then asked to check for a pulse in his arm and could not find one there, or in his neck. I was then asked to turn him onto his back and find his sternum and push hard just above it with a steady 1,2,3,4, motion, which I did for around 10 minutes. I could feel a faint pulse but only whilst pumping on his chest. When the paramedics arrived they took over and put him in an ambulance. “I called his wife later that day to find out that he had made a really good recovery without any brain damage, which apparently was due to pressure applied when pumping his chest. “I have been on some first aid courses over the years but nothing can prepare you for the actual event.”

ONESTOPTM SIMPLY REMOVES LIMESCALE

Infinity Plus Cascade systems mean that upgrading the traditional water heater to a technologically advanced continuous flow system is simple. Developed by Rinnai to guarantee high volumes of temperature accurate hot water, the design parameters of the cascade systems offer ease of integration into new and existing buildings even when retrofitting from traditional storage systems. The modules incorporate Rinnai’s proven energysaving 1500 or 1200 condensing continuous flow water heaters with its newly developed common header flue system technology. It is designed to deliver high efficiencies for the building operator whilst also streamlining the installation in one “turnkey package”.

Smith’s is launching OneStop™, which conditions mains water at the point that it enters the home, preventing scale deposits and working on removing existing limescale. Unlike other hard water solutions, OneStopTM is not a water softener so it does not require a drain, a bypass for drinking water or regular doses of salt. It uses a relatively new process, Template Assisted Crystallization (TAC) to change hardness minerals from their ionic form to a harmless crystalline form. The OneStopTM will retail for £329.99 inc. VAT, while the replacement cartridge will be available for £169.99 inc. VAT, available from all good merchants.

INTRODUCING SC-CONTUR: VIEGA’S PRESS CONNECTION SOLUTION

KINGSPAN TITAN EXTENDS PREMIUM OIL TANK SECTOR RANGE

Viega has introduced its SCContur technology to the UK market, a unique design feature incorporated within pressings across their range, including connections for 12 mm to 108 mm pipe. Press connections are up to 50% faster to install compared with soldering, and without the need for hot works it is also safer and cleaner. The SC-Contur technology incorporates a flowpath channel within the fitting, proven to deliver a 100% positive leak if the fitting is inadvertently unpressed – clearly discernible during leakage testing or when the system is filled for the first time.

The ESSL1000 is the latest addition to the Titan EcoSafe slimline range, with a total footprint of only 1.152m2. It offers safe and secure heating oil storage at premises where space is limited. It includes the Watchman Alarm oil level monitor which is fitted as standard, which uses a transmitter on top of the tank and ultrasonic level techniques to measure the level of oil in a tank. This is displayed on an LCD screen on a receiver, which can be located anywhere on the premises. Any sudden drop in oil levels will trigger an alarm, and supplies can be replenished in good time thanks to the system’s low level alert feature.
