STUDENT PLUMBER WINS BATH FULL OF TOOLS ON TWITTER COMPETITION A future plumber on a Twitter quest for an apprenticeship has won Plumb Center’s recent #FillANabis competition. Richard Stone, from Cardiff, won a Nabis bathroom suite full of £1,000 worth of Rothenberger tools at his local Plumb Center Showroom after entering the #FillANabis competition, which was launched in February. The merchant asked plumbers and installers on Twitter what they’d fill a Nabis bath with for their chance to win it. Richard Stone won with his Tweet that said: “@ plumbcenterUK I’m a plumbing student looking for an apprenticeship so I’d #FillANabis with all the tools I would need for the job.” PLUMBCENTER.CO.UK
KOHLER MIRA RAISE £92,000 FOR CANCER RESEARCH UK
ALPHA’S NEW DOMESTIC BOILER IS SMALL BUT MIGHTY
Staff at Kohler Mira have smashed its fundraising target for Cancer Research UK (CRUK) which has resulted in a total of £92,000 being handed over to the charity this spring. Every year, Kohler Mira associates choose a charity to support and with several colleagues having been closely touched by the disease recently, CRUK was elected for 2016-17. Fundraising events ranged from sponsored triathlons to bring-and-buy cake sales. One highlight this year was the outstanding results seen in Stand Up to Cancer Month last October. A host of activities took place, including a cycle challenge, an Indian food day, a bake off, toilet roll wrap and many more – all of which culminated in a single month’s donations of £12,000.
Alpha Heating Innovation has introduced the smallest model within its domestic range: the new E-Tec combi boiler. With a brand new stainless steel heat exchanger, it promises to deliver on functionality, reliability and energy efficiency. Available in two outputs, the E-Tec boiler is capable of delivering up to 14.1 litres of water per minute making it the ideal choice for small to medium sized homes. Due to wide waterways within the heat exchanger and a high efficiency Grundfos pump, mains water is warmed up quickly for constant delivery of hot water.

INTRODUCING THE NEW BIG FINISH: PIPESNUG PipeSnug, launched by Snug Solutions Ltd, makes installing waste pipes easier by removing the need to point mortar around pipes where they exit the wall. It is designed so that any plumber can use it to seal the hole where a pipe exits a wall. Traditional mortar, silicone or expanding foam can be very messy and doesn’t look great on the building’s exterior. Quicker, cheaper, and cleaner than all these methods, PipeSnug can be used in all weathers on any plumbing project. PIPESNUG.CO.UK

W E I V E R N COMPETITIO
This year the HIP UK Heating Apprentice of the Year Competition was bigger than ever before because we had seven regions and eight finalists. As soon as the regional finalists arrived at the ADEY Training and Conference Centre on Wednesday 29th March, the two-day challenge to find the overall UK winner began…
The finalists were given twelve hours over two days to go head-to-head in an attempt to be crowned the 2017 HIP UK Heating Apprentice of the Year. We were joined by our fantastic sponsors, including Platinum sponsor ADEY, Gold sponsor Copper Initiative and Silver sponsor Vaillant, as well as Twitter plumbing mogul Peter Booth, YouTube master James Lawrence from plumberparts.co.uk, and many other special guests. Our sponsors also donated some incredible prizes – over £9000 worth, in fact – so there was even more incentive for the competitors to win. The standard of work made marking extremely difficult for our judges, so well done to each and every finalist: you were fantastic! If all of this has sparked your interest and you’d like to enter next year, then keep an eye on our website, Twitter and Facebook to stay posted on how you can enter the 2018 competition. We’d love to see you there!

HIP MAGAZINE | SUMMER ISSUE 2017 | UK COMPETITION
We caught up with the 2017 HIP UK Heating Apprentice of the Year winner straight after her name was announced at the grand final. Tayla Wileman from Burton and South Derbyshire College is just 18 years old and her victory makes her the competition’s first ever female overall winner. We managed to have a chat with her in the midst of the excitement. HIP: How does it feel to be the winner of a UK competition? TW: To win is so overwhelming. I couldn’t believe it when my name was called out! It doesn’t feel real. HIP: What made you want to enter the HIP UK Heating Apprentice of the Year Competition? TW: I’ve never done anything else like this before. I entered last year but I didn’t manage to win the regional heat, so when my college asked me to represent them again I really wanted to do it and go further this time. HIP: How did you cope with completing the task in the given time over two days? TW: I was tight for time for most of it. On the first day I only had twenty minutes left after I had finished the hot and cold water. On the second day I had ten minutes left. I was panicking that I wouldn’t get it all done!
HIP: Who are you going to call first to let them know that you have won? TW: My mum - I’m going to pretend that I did badly first! I texted her saying I didn’t know how I’d done because I thought I’d messed some things up. She’ll be more excited than me. HIP: What has been the best part of the competition overall? TW: Finding out I’d won. As soon as I heard all of the other [‘most improved’ and ‘runner-up’] names being called out I thought that the winner wouldn’t be me. HIP: And what has been the worst? TW: When we had to sit and wait for the result, but there’s nothing else you can do. HIP: What attracted you to a career in the plumbing and heating industry? TW: I wanted to do something practical at school and there was only construction or cooking available. I found I was best at plumbing so I stuck to that. HIP: What’s your least favourite thing about the industry? TW: Early mornings and not knowing what time you’re going to finish. Dirty toilets as well! HIP: What’s the main thing that you’ll take away from this experience? TW: Knowing that I can work within a time limit and do tasks like this.

ADEY INTRODUCES 10-YEAR COMPLETE PRODUCT WARRANTY ADEY Professional Heating Solutions, Platinum sponsor of the HIP UK Heating Apprentice of the Year 2017, has increased the warranty on its MagnaClean Professional2 and Micro2 filters, becoming the first filter manufacturer to provide whole product protection for ten years*. ADEY are delighted to be able to give apprentices, installers and their customers peace of mind that they can trust MagnaClean to provide optimum boiler protection for the long-term without any issues.
The new warranty reflects the company’s confidence in the proven performance of its products which is supported by more than 2,000 hours of rigorous component testing, ensuring only the highest quality materials are used.
Rigorous testing ADEY’s own comprehensive materials testing includes simulated 10-year system cycle testing for temperature, pressure and thermal-shock, hydrostatic destruction testing, performance testing for magnetic and non-magnetic capture, simulated flow testing, in addition to independent testing by BSI.
John Vaughan, ADEY Chief Executive, says: “For more than a decade, ADEY has been providing the industry with the best quality products on the market. The extensive testing we undertake on our products means that we are the only filter manufacturer that can provide installers with a 10-year warranty on the whole product, not just the shell of the filter.”
Reduced bills MagnaClean filters are proven to reduce home heating bills and carbon emissions by 6% year on year, saving up to £66 for a threebedroom property. By protecting heating systems from a build-up of damaging black iron oxide sludge, MagnaClean also helps to reduce maintenance call-outs and to increase the lifespan of a boiler beyond the average 12-15 years.

WILO SUPPORTS THE HIP UK HEATING APPRENTICE OF THE YEAR COMPETITION One of the leading pump manufacturers in the world is proud to be able to support the HIP UK Heating Apprentice of the Year Competition. Wilo’s popular small circulating pumps are easily recognised because as well as being highly energy efficient – they are also green! Wilo has been working alongside HIP for many years, recognising the importance of bringing new blood into the heating and plumbing sector. They are keen to get their pumps into the hands of tomorrow’s heating engineers and installers so they can experience the benefits of working with the family of Wilo small pumps in their day-to-day work.
Small circulating pumps are a key component of all wet heating systems in the UK. They perform as stand-alone pumps or as integrated pumps in combi and system boilers and they keep the water circulating in underfloor heating systems and air conditioning units too. They are responsible for a much higher percentage of overall household electricity usage than many realise which is why old uncontrolled pumps were targeted by European legislation as a key way of reducing residential energy usage.
R&D Wilo’s strength lies in its huge research and development programme that sees it constantly developing ever more efficient solutions and improving the ease and speed of installation. Wilo’s series of glandless pumps - WiloYonos PICO, Wilo-Stratos PICO and Wilo-Stratos – are seeing increasing popularity across the board. They are relevant for nearly all applications for heating, air-conditioning and cooling in the building services area.
EU Legislation From January 2013 high efficiency pumps were demanded by EU Legislation and as availability of anything other than high efficiency options declined, specifiers began to demand the high efficiency options. Now, four years down the line, high efficiency pumps have been accepted and are being purchased from merchants in their thousands.
The new Wilo small circulators bring the benefits of the latest technology, vastly improved electronics and electronically commutated motors - ECMs.

SNICKERS WORKTROUSERS ARE NOW GETTING EVEN ‘SMARTER’ Snickers WorkTrousers are getting even ‘smarter’ thanks to the integration of technology. Wearable Technology is already woven into our daily lives through smartphones, fitness devices, sports clothing and accessories to help monitor and improve performance. A recent study carried out in Scandinavia* showed that more than 50% of their professional craftsmen are cutting corners at work and that they don't use the available health and safety equipment as they should. David Clark, managing director of the Hultafors Group UK said: “Our experience is that craftsmen usually are so focused on getting the job done that personal protection tends to be overlooked.” But repeated ‘corner cutting’ over the years definitely creates a long-term health problem, an issue that Snickers Workwear has been continually addressing with its patented KneeGuard System. Clark said: “The study shows that 6 out of 10 craftsmen are suffering from pain in their knees. So we see that there is definitely room for improving their wellbeing beyond just knee protection - and our ‘Smart Workwear’ is one way.”
‘Tracker 1’ is Snickers’ first prototype of wearable technology: a chip has been fitted to a pair of WorkTrousers, enabling the user to monitor work place noise levels, heat conditions and knee impact.
Market-leading technology and innovation have long been hallmarks of Snickers Workwear. “We are known for our KneeGuard System, 37.5 Fabric Technology and technical functionality, but the integration of ‘smart’ wearable technology into our clothing shows the extent to which we are looking at working clothes and wellbeing on site in a completely new way.”
Clark said: “Market-leading technology and innovation have long been hallmarks of Snickers Workwear.

TRITON’S NEW T80 PRO-FIT ELECTRIC SHOWER Steve Saunders, senior technical manager at Triton, demonstrates how to fit the newly launched Triton T80 Pro-Fit electric shower, which can replace almost any other electric model thanks to a variety of entry points for both cable and pipework.
1
The T80 Pro-Fit is supplied with the left inlet plugged and the popular right inlet open. A template is supplied to assist in routing pipe and cable in new installations. Triton has also included a nut and olive in the box, making it even easier and quicker to get connected to an existing compression fitting.
2
There are eight water and eight electric entry points and Triton’s Swing-Fit™ terminal block fits on the left or right for cable entering from the top, bottom, back or sides.
3
Top pipe and cable entry trims can be inserted before or after the shower has been fitted to the wall. A removable bottom trim plate with insert trims makes it easy to route a water pipe and supply cable into the unit from the bottom.
4
5
6
If required, the water outlet from the heater can be rotated to give greater clearance and access to the water supply fitting. With the shower secured to the wall the water supply can be turned on and the inlet fitting checked for leaks.
Make cable connections to the terminal block ensuring screws are good and tight. Fit the bottom trim and set the power control to cold before fitting the cover and securing with the supplied screws. The centralised dials will only fit one way onto the spindles providing an error-free, wire-free cover fit.
Fit the shower hose. Turn on the electricity supply, start the shower on a cold power and low flow setting and wait for water to flow from the shower hose. Press the stop button and fit the riser kit.
The 670mm riser rail (up to 620mm fixing centres) allows for the direct replacement of any standard rail. Both wall brackets can be positioned along the length of the rail and it includes a longer reach 1.5m hose, a hose retainer and an optional clip-on bottle tray. LUXURY: THE TREND THAT IS REVOLUTIONISING THE HUMBLE RAD According to Prime Economics*, since 1993, national house prices in the UK have risen from an average of £62,333 to a whopping £247,000. With this rise, not only are people struggling to get on the property ladder, but those already on the ladder are reluctant to move. As a result, more and more people are simply updating their existing homes to suit their needs. In pursuing ways to modernise these homes, many are looking to the trend of luxury home design. As they seek to add a touch of class and style to their living quarters, customers are looking to their installer for simple ways to refresh their homes. As an apprentice, knowing all about the new trends and styles will set you apart from the competition.
In response to this new trend we are seeing manufacturers invest in creating aspirational products and promoting them to the masses. Stelrad has an extensive collection of designer radiators on offer which includes vertical and horizontal options.
Radiator Selector tool As a starting point, Plumb Center’s Radiator Selector tool can quickly work out which radiator is right for your project on a room-by-room basis, allowing you to choose from a collection that includes everything from designer radiators to aluminium, cast iron and low surface temperature models.
Opportunity to upsell
As an apprentice, knowing all about the new trends and styles will set you apart from the competition.
This is a great opportunity to upsell to customers, offering a few premium products that can refashion the space. This is where the humble rad can add style and sophistication. Previously, these have been seen as functional necessities rather than a decorative accessory, but they can, in fact, be both. Homes need to be heated efficiently to ensure the occupant’s comfort, but these can also be a point of interest in a property expressing the occupant’s personality and adding a touch of luxury.
CenterRad range It’s not only the big brands in the market investing in decorative radiators: Plumb Center’s exclusive CenterRad range also includes decorative products. The CenterRad Deco features stylish alternatives to the traditional panel radiator. There’s a lot of options out there and as an up and coming installer, you need to arm yourself with knowledge of current trends and what’s on offer. *Prime Economics: www.primeeconomics.org

7
Mount radiator to wall, ensuring fittings line up with existing pipework.
Cut pipework to fit into valve body, use chrome-finish pipe where possible for decorative effect. Ensure around 1" of pipe fits into the valve body.
Fix pipe to valve by tightening nut using 15mm spanner. Be careful to ensure spanner is a correct fit as any slippage could scratch the chrome surface.
Tighten the valve body to the radiator using a 32mm spanner. Again, try to prevent the spanner from scratching the chrome surface.

YOU’RE GETTING WARMER WITH QRL RADIATORS Traditional panel radiators might appear the same on the outside, but they’re not all created equal. In reality, efficiency and performance vary greatly, with some models emitting significantly more heat than others. So how can trainee installers spot the difference between outdated technology and the best-performing models?
Getting technical It’s all about the differences beneath a radiator’s exterior: namely the distance between its vertical water channels (known as waterway pitch) and the number of convector fins. These can greatly impact on performance. In a nutshell, the narrower the pitch and the more fins there are, the faster the heat transfer, the lower the water content and the more efficient the emitter.
It’s a generation thing Panel radiators can be grouped into three ‘generations’. All have a different technical makeup and therefore, varying levels of efficiency. First-generation radiators, introduced in the very early days of central heating, are now obsolete. With a wide waterway pitch and no convector fins, they were overall very inefficient.
Most radiators available today belong to one of the following two categories: Second-generation radiators make up the vast majority of the market. They have a 33.33mm pitch and waterway-welded fins.
Third-generation radiators were first developed by QRL engineers. They have the narrowest pitch (just 25mm) and the most convector fins, which makes for the best heat transfer, the highest efficiency, and the fastest heat-up times. They also have the lowest water content, the least steel and the smallest carbon footprint. QRL remains the only manufacturer of third-generation radiators today.
Rooms with third-generation radiators reach the desired temperature quicker, and the heat source doesn’t have to work as hard. What’s more, because they emit up to 18% more heat than leading second-generation radiators1 (when compared like-for-like), you can even opt for a smaller model and still meet the required heat output – reducing energy usage, as well as upfront and running costs.
Keeping it close to home QRL third-generation panel radiators are manufactured in Newport, Wales at its first-rate production facility – one of the most advanced in the world – using 100% British steel. Local sourcing helps reduce transport emissions, highlighting QRL’s dedication to minimising its environmental impact. Visit qrl-radiators.com

TOP TIPS FOR INSTALLING THE HEP20 UNDERFLOOR HEATING SYSTEM Steve Harris
When it comes to a Hep20 underfloor heating system there is nothing that Steve Harris, Technical Support Engineer at Wavin, doesn’t know. Here he reveals his top three things to consider before you start installation to ensure that you fit an UFH system as efficiently as possible.
how the controls work can be beneficial not 1 Understanding only to yourself but also to the homeowner when you are explaining how to operate the thermostats. It will also make you look more professional. When then UFH system has all been installed and the time has come to commission and set up the controls, it is always worth taking a moment to read and understand what is required of you as an installer. All too often installers can make a simple mistake which can be very costly in time and effort to then try and fix it. With today’s technology, controlling their new UFH from their mobile may be just what the customer wants. However, not asking this question at the beginning can cause a big headache when the system has been installed because the wrong wires will probably have been put in at the first fix stage. how they want to control the UFH system, because the 2 Consider controls are everything when it comes to the homeowner being able to operate their UFH system. Make sure you go over with them where they want heat, e.g. if they'd like heat in front of the kitchen sink, don't put pipes under the kitchen units and appliances. Once the manifold has been commissioned - which involves the balancing of all the circuits to obtain the correct flow rates and delta T across each individual flow & return the manifold is left to do its job. All that the homeowner sees are the thermostats in each room. actual wiring for a qualified electrician isn’t too complex 3 The as long as they understand which wires are required and where they run to and from. Usually from each thermostat position (which need to be pre-determined), a 3-core and earth is run to the wiring centre position, usually just above the manifold. Also, power supply from the fused spur is required for the wiring centre and a wire to either the boiler or maybe a motorised valve if one is fitted. Remember that some thermostats are wireless and therefore the only wires required are for the wiring centre. There are also low voltage thermostats which can use small cable such as CAT-5 (telephone/ computer wire). Whichever system is decided on, care must be taken to ensure the correct wires are installed.

Connecting the mat to the thermostat involves just one twin-core cable, plus an earth connection to the cable screen.
The thermostat-controlled ECmat reacts rapidly to changes in the indoor climate, radiating just the right amount of warmth whilst minimising energy consumption for householders.
Quality Danfoss ECmat sets the highest quality standards for electric floor heating mats and it is particularly ideal for renovation projects, says Danfoss Marketing Services Manager, Gareth Ash. He said: “The low built-in height means the complete heating system takes up minimal space, so you can install a new floor on top of the old one. Also, the innovative design ensures a fast, simple and safe installation with no need to break up the existing floor.”
Product range Offering maximum comfort for most floor sizes, ECmat is available in a choice of 100W, 150W and 200W systems. The ECmat range covers 0.5m2 up to 12m2 per mat. PREPARING THE BASE
PLANNING & PIPEWORK
LAY THE PANELS
The insulated panels for underfloor heating should be fitted to a flat surface and the sheet insulation must be fully supported. Ensure that the home’s existing insulation meets building regulations, including the external walls, to prevent any heat loss.
Before you start laying any panels, you must work out the path that the pipework will take from the manifold to the zones, ensuring that a suitable design is in place. JG Speedfit provides a free CAD design service that can assist with this.
Once the design has been completed, start laying out the JG Overfit® panels, ensuring that they are both flat and firm. After the panels have been laid out and the area is covered, tape the joints into place using JGTAPE.
04
05
06
CUTTING THE GROOVES
INSERTING THE PIPE
INSTALLING THE FLOOR COVER
As not all of the grooves will be utilised, some of them will be covered with foil. When installing the pipe into these grooves, it’s important that they’re cut with a sharp craft knife. The cut needs to be deep enough to fit the pipe as forcing it through the foil could damage the groove and prevent a steady hold for the pipe.
When inserting the pipe into the grooves, start at the perimeter and work to the furthest circuit to be installed within the zone. Work up and down in a serpentine pattern, cut the foil where the pipework needs to make a return bend. Once this is laid, tape the return pipe to ensure it stays in place.
If installing carpet, a plywood sheet should be fitted as a backing at a thickness of at least 6mm depending on the intended use and load. If a floor covering such as tongue grooved boards is used it’s possible to place 25mm backing between the JG Overfit® board at the installation stage. If laying tiles over the underfloor heating, make sure to use a heavy back board to prevent movement of the tiles.

HOT FACTS WITH VIESSMANN When a domestic boiler needs replacing, if you make the default choice of installing a new combi boiler you could be missing a trick. VISIT VIESSMANN.CO.UK
NOW. PUMP TECHNOLOGY OF THE FUTURE. NEW
39
Instead of making a like-for-like replacement with another combi, sometimes a better option is a system boiler plus separate cylinder, which although costing extra, will be less expensive to run.
With Viessmann’s four-pipe system, the system boiler can discriminate between the domestic hot water and heating circuits, serving each with separate flow and return pipes. This allows lower flow and return temperatures for heating, enabling the boiler to condense for about 70% (or more) of the time - and that saves energy over a standard installation with a fixed flow temperature which always runs hot. A separate cylinder can also be integrated with technologies such as solar thermal or heat pumps for further savings, either now or in the future.
Because a normal S or Y-plan system boiler is typically oversized by 10-30% to cater for hot water demand, a four-pipe system also allows you to specify a lower output boiler. That means a lower boiler cost in addition to lower running costs and greater hot water comfort.

HAVE YOU GOT THE RIGHT SKILLS FOR THE HEATING OF THE FUTURE? Britain needs to build lots of new houses, which bodes well for the plumbing and heating industry.
Sharon Oliver
At the same time, existing homeowners are looking for ways to reduce energy bills and their impact on the environment, perhaps also earning a quarterly payment from the government’s Renewable Heat Incentive. And for both situations, there is now a suitable, renewable heat pump, whether it is one designed specifically for the high hot water, low heating demand of a new-build, or a system that can be ‘bolted on’ to an existing heating system and work in tandem. Sharon Oliver, Marketing Manager for Mitsubishi Electric’s range of Ecodan air source heat pumps, said: “It is easy to take a traditional route with plumbing and heating but new entrants to the industry should make sure they know all about the future as well. “Gas remains the dominant technology for the majority of the country but as new energy certificates for buildings and equipment start to impact, consumers will be looking for other ways to access reliable, modern heating and that is
where we believe heat pumps can make a real difference.”
Comprehensive training Mitsubishi Electric has designed heat pumps with features that make installation more straightforward and operation easier for homeowners. The company also has a nationwide network of training suites at its eight regional offices, offering comprehensive training to heating engineers.
Some people still think heat pumps are new and ‘untested’ but we’ve been installing them in thousands of homes around the country: Ecodan heat pumps have been fitted to highrise apartments, country mansions, brick-built Victorian terraces, and they even heat the swimming pool for the rhinos at Edinburgh Zoo.
Sharon Oliver said: “The important thing about heat pumps is making sure the property is suited but over the past two years we’ve also seen an increase in the number of older properties where an Ecodan has been added to the existing oil or gas system. “This allows the homeowner to qualify for RHI payments for every kilowatt of renewable heating the heat pump produces. It also gives them the traditional system as a back-up for extreme weather, as the Ecodan’s intelligent control system decides when it is most efficient to run either system. “Heat pumps are seen by the government as a key component in the future of the nation’s heating so people starting off in the business now should really make sure they understand the technology.”

PUSHING FOR HEAT PUMPS Martyn Bridges, Director of Technical Communication and Product Management at Worcester, Bosch Group, discusses the potential for heat pumps to help lower the country’s emissions, and explains the considerations to make before recommending one. As the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) continues to look for a solution to our energy worries; heat pumps are still being spoken about as a potential method for heating our homes. While this might sound good to us, convincing homeowners to replace their small, compact boilers with a large – and costly – heat pump remains difficult.
Best of both The majority of boiler replacements have an element of distress about them and are rarely planned. With aging boilers often so unreliable they are not worth fixing, or so old that the parts are no longer available, homeowners looking for a complete replacement may turn to heat pumps. However, in these quickfix scenarios, heat pumps can potentially exclude or alienate a portion of potential customers who are unable to wait for the house insulation to be upgraded sufficiently for a heat pump to fulfil its potential.
Opting for a hybrid heat pump / boiler system is therefore the ideal stepping-stone for customers looking to benefit from heat pump technology.
Whilst this renewable solution can be used in moderation when the weather is warmer, the boiler can still be used during the colder months where more energy is required.
Worcester Greensource Air to Air Heat Pump
This struggle to convince homeowners is shown by the fact that the numbers of air to water and ground-source models installed have regressed over the years. While this trend falls similar to that of other renewable technologies, air to air heat pump sales have remained consistent, creating plenty of scope for growth in this area.
One of the biggest issues for installers to be aware of when recommending a heat pump is how well insulated the property is. There is every chance that older properties will not be insulated well enough to make a heat pump installation worthwhile.

HEAT IS ON FOR YOUNG TALENT EAL Head of Communications and Public Affairs says skills competitions like the HIP UK Heating Apprentice of the Year and WorldSkills UK competitions are a fantastic way to promote careers in heating and plumbing. EAL, the specialist awarding organisation for industry, has some of the UK industry’s most talented learners and apprentices. Individuals on our qualifications made up more than half of the engineering, electrical and plumbing competition WorldSkills UK national finalists at the 2016 Skills Show (71 of the 132 competitors, with 32 going on to win medals). Meanwhile almost half of the HIP UK Heating Apprentice of the Year 2017 regional winners were also studying for EAL qualifications.
Skill competitions Skills competitions allow competitors to become more productive and achieve
excellence in their chosen careers, which also benefits their employers. For colleges and training providers, skills competitions help to facilitate collaboration between education and industry and drive up teaching and learning to cutting edge standards.
Research In recent research, 95% of competitors said taking part in WorldSkills UK competitions had improved their technical and employability skills, while 80% said it had increased their confidence, team working, time management and ability to work under pressure. WorldSkills champions will tell you that taking part in competitions and showcasing their talent, expertise and knowledge to other young people is a life changing experience.
Showcasing vocational and technical education as an inspirational career path is good for employers, training providers, colleges, individuals and the wider UK economy. That is why EAL is proud to be playing an important role in supporting skills competitions, including the HIP UK Heating Apprentice of the Year, and encouraging our learners to take part. S R E I L P : X E P I N K N O Y L E R N A C U YO Your pliers are a crucial part of your tool bag and should be chosen on quality, powerful performance and user comfort, explains Alex Garami of KNIPEX. As an apprentice you are now learning the essential skills of your trade. It’s an exciting time and as you move from working in the classroom to working on site, the tools and equipment you choose will become even more important to you.
Choosing the right tools That’s especially true of your pliers, which you will need to powerfully grip, cut and nip pipes, nuts and valves on a regular basis, so getting the choice right will help ensure you work comfortably and safely with tools you can rely on. With professional users like you in mind we seek to find innovative solutions that enable plumbing and heating engineers to get their work done more easily, quickly and safely. For instance, the KNIPEX Cobra range of water pump pliers are substantially lighter than comparable pipe wrenches. They have enormous gripping capacity and are available in various lengths from 125mm to 560mm.
KNIPEX Cobra pliers The KNIPEX Cobra pliers are self-locking and will not slip on the pipe, nut or joint being worked on, meaning there is no time consuming trial and error to find the correct setup of the pliers. All versions of the Cobra can be directly adjusted on the piece you are working on – simply position the upper jaw on the item, push the button and slide the lower jaw closed. The reliable catching mechanism of the hinge bolt prevents unintentional shifting. The teeth on all Cobra models are specially hardened during manufacture to approximately 61 HRC, so the firm grip is extremely long-lasting. In addition, there’s an anti-pinch mechanism on the handle. The smaller length Cobra pliers are pocketsized all-rounders with lengths of 125mm, 150mm and 180mm. The Cobra models with lengths of 250mm and 300mm have considerable gripping capacity while being
KNIPEX Cobra pliers are self-locking and will not slip on the pipe, nut or joint... easily manageable and the perfect size to offer excellent accessibility to the workpiece. The larger Cobra 400mm and 560mm XL and XXL sizes offer gripping widths up to 4½".
Full range To complete the KNIPEX Cobra range, the company has added the Cobra QuickSet (250mm and 300mm length). When the user opens the QuickSet completely and places the upper jaw on the workpiece, the lower handle can be pushed to adjust, making this very practical where space is tight. HIP MAGAZINE | SUMMER ISSUE 2017 | APP REVIEW
APP-RENTICE Rag and bone, ringer, handset, mobile, bleeper, cell…whatever you call your phone, it’s unlikely that you’re ever without it. So why not use it to go further as a plumber? We take a look at some of the latest apps that are available to make your plumb thumb app happy…
Will you accept the Triton ‘Pro-Fit Challenge’ to show off your shower installation skills and speed? Triton’s latest interactive app guarantees to get installers well and truly hooked as they work against the clock to fit the new T80 Pro-Fit shower, whilst ensuring the eagleeyed ‘homeowner’ remains happy. If gamers achieve a professional finish and answer the closing question correctly, the final installation time will be reduced. Take too long or make mistakes and the character will become increasingly red faced with anger and extra time will be added on. Challenge accepted? Then grab your smartphone and download the app free of charge from the Apple and Android stores. Simply search ‘Pro-Fit Challenge’ and see your name appear on Triton’s leaderboard.
The Grant TechBox app, which stores the heating specialist’s current and historical product manuals, has been updated and now includes the technical information for Grant’s latest products, the VortexBlue oil boiler and Aerona air source heat pumps. Whether you need the installation manual for a product no longer manufactured, such as the Multipass boiler, or the technical information on a Grant Spira biomass boiler, the TechBox app is there to support engineers out in the field. The Grant TechBox is free to download and suitable for Android and Apple devices. For further information, visit: www.grantuk.com
The new WRAS Pipe Insulation Tool is a free, easy-to-use app for installers to assess the effectiveness of insulation in delaying the freezing of water in pipes. Inputting a few key pieces of information will reveal how many hours protection you can expect from the insulation. By varying material thickness or type, you can calculate how much insulation is required for a given set of freezing conditions, aiming to get at least 12 hours protection as the answer at the bottom of the calculation sheet. The tool is free to download by searching “Pipe Insulation Tool”.

AS EASY AS
ONE, TWO, THREE… Here Jon Angrave, Rainwater Category Manager at Hunter Plastics provides you with a simple guide to installing a rainwater system.

Before starting you should identify the position of the drain, run a plumb line and fix a guttering outlet as high as possible, ensuring a fall no steeper than 1:350 to the outlet. Remember to check that the fascia is level and to determine the fall, if required.
Fix a support bracket at the furthest end and run a plumb line to the outlet. From the outlet, fix the support brackets at a maximum of one-metre centres.
Insert the gutter into the first fitting, ensuring that it is level with the ‘insert here line’ marked on the inside. At the other end of the gutter, mark the position of the next fitting on the fascia. Gutters should always be installed to the ‘insert here’ line to allow it to move in the fitting as it expands and contracts in warm weather.
4
5
6
Remove the gutter and fix your next fitting using your mark line, ensuring that the fittings are level by using the plumb line.
Fit the length of the gutter and stop end, with the support bracket at the furthest end. Next, fit the top offset bend to the outlet and then use the bottom offset to determine the length of pipe required.
Fit a pipe clip immediately below the bottom offset to prevent the pipe slipping out of position, then at a maximum of two metres apart. Finally, check the water tightness by blocking off any outlets and filling the gutter with water.

WHY ROBOTS WON’T PUT YOU OUT OF A JOB
51
Benjamin Dyer Powered Now CEO
The idea of smart robots is becoming a reality and some jobs are going to be hit. Benjamin Dyer of Powered Now looks at the implications for heating and plumbing engineers. The human race doesn’t have a great future if you base your thinking on Hollywood: robots, their only intent being the destruction of the human race, will be the harbinger of our doom.
The future is already here Artificial Intelligence is developing very fast and is the underpinning of the latest robots. Already, there’s CyberWeld who supply welding robots. Dyson and Samsung both produce robot cleaners. The range of jobs that can be replaced is only going in one direction.
Who should be worrying The Law Society recently published “The Future of Legal Services”. Ominously they stated: “Numerous legal tech companies … are now exploring the extent to which … lawyers can be automated.” Accountants could also be going the same way!
Heating and plumbing is safe In contrast, most studies predict that the trade professions are the least likely to be impacted. Being able to get under the sink, up a ladder and into the loft while intelligently handling the variety of real life problems, is way beyond the capabilities of today’s robots.
What’s actually coming Hopefully the only job robots will be taking is back-breaking work like lifting and positioning heavy boilers. Yes, a new industrial revolution is coming, but the great news is that it’s all good for plumbers and heating engineers. For more information visit powerednow.com

Inta has launched the newest evolution of its multi-million selling Intamix thermostatic mixing valve (TMV). The newest Intamix Quickfit TMV in Inta’s acclaimed range features a new patent pending quick-fit system that has 40% fewer connections than a conventional mixing valve arrangement. Inta has reduced the number of wet connections to the valve from five to three, drastically reducing the time it takes installers to fit the valve while reducing the chance of leaks. By shrinking the valve’s overall size, it can also be installed in locations where space is at a premium. Intamix Quickfit is WRAS approved and certified to TMV2 and TMV3 standards. intatec.co.uk

SELECTING SANITARYWARE IS SIMPLE WITH ABACUS BATHROOMS
GRAHAM AND ZANUSSI BOILERS LAUNCH NEW FINANCE SCHEME
Offering bathroom retailers exceptional design flexibility, Abacus Bathrooms’ sanitaryware portfolio is split into two distinctive styles. ‘Pure’ boasts a strong geometric line, perfect for those seeking an urban, contemporary look. For a softer dynamic, there is ‘Simple’, which is still modern but has a gently curved silhouette with subtly classic overtones. Cleverly, the geometric and curved designs of Pure and Simple can also be successfully worked together, due to their shared simplicity, proportions and precise colour match. Both the ‘Pure’ and ‘Simple’ designs are offered across a wide range of basins, WCs and bidets.
Graham Plumbers’ Merchant is launching an exclusive scheme in partnership with Zanussi Boilers. With most homeowners not having the savings required to replace the boiler when it fails, the new initiative will help them to secure finance to cover the cost. Through the Zanussi approved installer scheme, a Gas Safe registered installer can provide their customer with access to credit directly from Zanussi at competitive rates to make it easier to afford. In many cases the total cost and monthly payments will be far lower than those offered by other national providers.
