MORE CONSTRUCTION PROFESSIONALS NEEDED

TUTORS HELP TO DESIGN NEW ‘TECH ANNEX’ To meet demand for training in plumbing, gas and plastering, Hopwood Hall College has invested in a new ‘tech annex’. Work on the annex to the College’s multimillion pound Technology Centre started 15 months ago and it’s now ready for its first intake of would-be plumbers and plasterers. In order to ensure that the new building is at the cutting edge of training in these fields, over 100 professionals, including college tutors were involved in designing the state-of-the-art workshops. Rob Wilson, who is a tutor and member of the National Association of Plastering Lecturers, was part of the consultation and explains that: “We need more trained professionals in the industry, especially with the country’s housing needs and so Hopwood Hall College is responding to this.” Alan Harrison, another tutor at the College, who also helped with its design, is delighted with the new facilities: “Each individual has their own area to work in which replicates the jobs they’re going to come across in real life. It’s an ideal learning environment.” Pictured is 18 year old Hayden Bates from Rochdale who attended St Cuthbert's RC High School and is one of the first lucky students to try out the new facilities.

New research shows 20% more construction professionals are needed by 2017, but a large London college says there are not enough young people training to join the sector. The “Higher, Further, Faster, More” report published earlier this year by the Policy Exchange and funded by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) and Wates Construction, says that 20% more construction staff will be required in London and the South East between 2014 and 2017. The think-tank report is calling for the Government to shift £500m of funding from universities to further education colleges. It says that universities are sitting on £12.3bn of unrestricted reserves while colleges are struggling. Mike Paxton, Curriculum Director for Construction & Engineering at Barking & Dagenham College, commented on the report saying: “The construction industry is booming right across London, with the residential development on the former Olympic site and with 8,500 skilled workers needed at the Nine Elms site on the south bank by 2016. Our industry partners are crying out for talented young people to train in the technical and professional side of construction as well as the crafts.” “The College has seen a 100% increase in applications from adults for our higher level construction management courses. Many of these students already work in the sector, understand the opportunities, and are up-skilling accordingly. But, many parents and young people don’t realise that you can study for a hi-tech construction management BTEC course right after GCSEs. Careers such as quantity surveying, design engineering and building information modelling need a pipeline of talented, skilled and highly trained individuals.”  VISIT BDC.AC.UK

NEW RECRUITS FOR CHS APPRENTICE SCHEME City Heating Spares, the spares brand of City Plumbing Supplies (CPS) and Plumbing Trade Supplies (PTS), has welcomed five new recruits onto its industryleading scheme after celebrating the graduation of two apprentices into full-time employment. The dedicated apprenticeship programme is the only one of its kind in the spares industry, and plays an integral role in attracting new talent to the thriving market; that demands both product expertise and the ability to meet emergencies by quickly sourcing the most effective solution.

NEW SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY PARK AT GLOUCESTER SGS College’s new Berkeley Green Campus, the Gloucestershire Science & Technology Park, recently opened its doors to the public for the very first time. There was an opportunity to view the new campus and hear about the plans to invest an initial £26m in a Green Skills Centre, a University Technical College for 14-19 year olds, an Advanced Renewables Research Centre and a Cyber Security Training Centre, in partnership with the University of Gloucestershire. The site will be developed over the next five years into a campus which will incorporate education, training, business start-up and research facilities, and will focus on the development of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. Local councillors and Stroud MP Neil Carmichael attended the event as well as many members of the local community. Fifteen employers, including Festo, Severn Trent Water, Worcester Bosch, Adey, EMCO, Keir Construction and StoneHealth, exhibited at the event to promote their training courses and the partnership they have with the College.

YOU’RE HIRED! Darren Taylor serving a customer

Darren Taylor, CHS spares apprentice, said: “I was previously in a job where there was no real way of progressing, and I was ready and up for a new challenge. My favourite part of the scheme has been getting to know how the whole business operates, while experiencing life in branch. It’s great to learn something new every day and build my own relationships with customers, especially now I’m moving into the role of CHS Manager in Glasgow.” The CHS apprenticeship is an 18 month programme, with placements completed in CPS and PTS branches. Once completed, the apprentices are appointed to a branch alongside a mentor.  CITYHEATINGSPARES.CO.UK

Leading shower designer and manufacturer, Roman, has introduced three new apprenticeships into different departments within the company. The new apprentices are a welcome addition to the many Roman already has. These three new apprentices are in different areas of the business covering different skill sets, Jack is in customer relations; Ciaran has been welcomed into joinery; and Karl has joined the R&D department. Roman has always supported apprenticeships, as they feel it is very important to help local young people gain the skills they need to succeed in future employment. Jack and Ciaran live in Newton Aycliffe and Karl is from Bishop Auckland, they are all 17 years old and have recently left college to pursue their chosen careers at Roman. Over the years, many of Roman's apprentices joined the company straight after school and are still there today, having risen through the ranks. A prime example is Alex Crawley, who joined Roman in 2001 straight after school and he is now the Manufacturing Manager, leading a team of over 60 people. There are many others well established within the business. Roman has six apprentices that have already completed their NVQ Level 3 qualification and are now working towards their HNC.  VISIT ROMAN-SHOWERS.COM OR CALL 01325 311318.

HIP UK HEATING APPRENTICE OF THE YEAR 2016 The pressure’s on, and it’s time for the regional heats which are taking place during January and February at colleges around the country. The HIP UK Heating Apprentice of the Year 2016 has received the highest level of college entries since the apprentice competitions were launched in 2009. They are assessed on both theory and practical challenges by leading industry experts, including head judge Tony Kite.

The winner of each heat will go through to the grand final which is taking place at ADEY’s headquarters in Cheltenham on 27th and 28th April.

PLATINUM SPONSOR

TEST OF THE BEST With the regional heats of the new HIP UK Heating Apprentice of the Year competition about to get underway, John Vaughan, Managing Director at main competition sponsor ADEY Professional Heating Solutions, explains why following best practice in heating system maintenance will set tomorrow’s installers apart. It’s believed that around 30% of the carbon emissions produced in this country come from the domestic sector and it’s estimated that household heating accounts for more than 60% of what we use. According to the Energy Saving Trust, boilers also account for around 55% of what we spend in a year on household energy bills. Household energy efficiency is therefore a national hot topic and with bills still at an all time high, it’s become increasingly important to homeowners. As such, it’s crucial that today’s heating apprentices are aware of system improvements that can help to maximise and prolong system efficiency to save customers money. Understanding how to provide this advice means going beyond just carrying out a repair and will help set them apart from the competition as their careers progress.

2015 WIN N E R

Best practice This is one of the many reasons why ADEY developed its award-winning approach to best practice. It enables installers to easily communicate the vital ingredients for ultimate system protection in four simple steps. For apprentices, learning how and why to adopt recommended best practice will ultimately pay dividends for them and their customers.

ADEY’s recommended best practice follows the maintenance mantra of CLEAN, FLUSH, MAINTAIN, PROTECT.

The combined effect of system cleaning, quality water treatment chemicals and the most effective magnetic filtration, work to improve heating system efficiency, protect against breakdown and reduce household heating bills. Adopting best practice can also help to build a reputation for excellent customer service and encourage repeat business.

ADEY on hand Magnetic filtration is an integral part of best practice and since its invention by Chris Adey little more than a decade ago, MagnaClean has been installed in more than three million UK homes. ADEY will also be holding practical product sessions at each of the competition’s six regional heats in

January and February, enabling lecturers and students to get hands-on with its MagnaClean filters, MagnaCleanse cleaning process and MC+ range of premium quality chemicals.

ADEY will also be holding practical product sessions at each of the competition’s six regional heats... The competition final, taking place on 27-28 April 2016 at ADEY’s Training and Conference Centre in Cheltenham, will then see whose skills and knowledge will help them to triumph, taking home the title and a £2,000 cash prize between them and their college, to continue what will hopefully be a very bright future in the industry.  adey.com

COPPER INITIATIVE, FOR PLUMBING STUDENTS AND LECTURERS We are being told that the country needs more trades people, to help in the construction of hundreds of thousands of new homes. If we need more trades people then we need more qualified plumbers. If we need more plumbers then we need more plumbing apprentices – apprentices with copper skills. Copper Initiative has long been encouraging young plumbers to develop their copper skills. We encourage plumbing teachers and their students to join our Copper Club via the on-line form on our website.

Copper Club Each member of our Club receives a pack containing the technical manual ‘Installation Tips’, the book on flame-free jointing ‘Copper the Modern

Solution’ and the CD ‘Copper Pipework Compendium’. Copper Initiative is continuing to provide sponsorship for the HIP Heating Apprentice competition, we fully appreciate that for the plumbing industry to maintain it's reputation it needs successive generations of highly skilled installers. Copper has long been the material of choice for plumbing engineers – for drinking water, hot and cold water, central heating, natural gas and solar thermal systems. The reliability, durability, versatility and good looks mean that copper reflects

the professionalism of the installer. It is essential that each new generation of plumbers is equipped to design and install copper to high standards. We hope that you are getting the most from our website, www.copperplumbing.org.uk. With plenty of news and downloads it is the ideal site for plumbing students to keep up to date with any developments and news. SILVER SPONSOR

HIP UK HEATING APPRENTICE OF THE YEAR 2016 SPONSORS Gregg Cole, Commercial Director at Vaillant comments on the company’s sponsorship: “Vaillant is a forward thinking organisation and we feel it’s important to support the next generation of installers as they take on our new technology and grow their skills and experience in the industry. “Apprenticeships are a great way of introducing the next generation of engineers to the industry, and Vaillant strongly believes that the hands-on training they receive at this time is invaluable in order for them to explore their different skill sets. This is why we’re delighted to be supporting the UK Heating Apprentice of the Year 2016. “As every installer knows, when

moving from apprentice to a qualified Registered Gas Engineer, training will continue to be a priority. Vaillant is committed to supporting installers at every stage of their career, helping installers new and experienced alike to refresh their knowledge, broaden their skills and keep up with best practice. “Vaillant’s Advance loyalty scheme allows installers to attend handson training sessions for free and regularly runs Advance tours at its Centres of Excellence, to bring the latest technologies and industry information to heating engineers.

“Members of the Advance scheme can also benefit from the masterTEC app, which provides everything a professional installer needs to get the job done directly in their pocket. Apprentice installers can access a vast knowledge base of information and documents, including product information, technical tables, and user, installation and spare parts manuals. By using tools like this that are readily available in their own pockets, apprentices can get a head start in their careers as professional installers.”  vaillant.co.uk

T N E M S S E S S A ONSITE

? T U O B A L L A WHAT'S IT

You are an apprentice, and in order to become a ‘tradesman’ you are completing your apprenticeship says Bruce Rolls, CEO of PACE Assessment. It’s better than just a job because you are now part of a great tradition joining the skilled, and not so skilled men and women, in the largest and most colourful (think Hi-Vis jackets) industry in the British economy. You are part of the construction industry. If you are reading this I think you are in the best sector within construction, plumbing.

Every plumber you meet seems to have a tale to tell you about how much harder it was when they were ‘getting their papers’. How they had to wipe lead joints in trenches with no health and safety regulation at all. They remind us over cups of warm sweet tea as they look back to a simpler time in their lives when they, like you, had everything to play for and only a job to lose. The truth is it was hard then as it is hard now, it is simply different. It is a fact that since the introduction of the HSE forty years ago deaths in construction have fallen by 80%. Sadly however, the majority of those fatal accidents in our sector happen to apprentices under 25. After your survival, the most important part of your apprenticeship qualification is the on-site assessment. Of all the apprenticeship framework components it is the one that will; get you a pay rise, a new job, recognition by the industry as a ‘tradesman’ (Level 2) and a ’craftsman’ (Level 3).

We believe in being honest and upfront with our candidates about what needs to be done for your NVQ. We are delighted to be invited by SNG to share our views on how to best get that job done so it satisfies the toughest scrutiny, reflects the quality of work you produce, without a mountain of paperwork. Let’s start at the beginning and get a few things straight:

1. WHAT IS ONSITE ASSESSMENT?

The gathering of evidence at work.

2. WHAT IS AN ASSESSOR?

Someone who is qualified in your trade area that visits you at your place of work.

3. WHAT IS AN ASSESSMENT DECISION?

The sign off / decision. Made by the assessor on your being competent, or not.

4. WHAT IS MY PORTFOLIO?

A collection of your work matched to standards set out by Awarding organisations (City & Guilds, EAL).

5. WHAT IS EVIDENCE?

The records created between you and your assessor that reveal your trade skills.

6. WHAT ARE THE MAIN WAYS OF COLLECTING EVIDENCE?

DO Direct observation - your assessor watching you do something. WT Witness testimony - your work based recorder (WBR) confirming you completed work to a good standard. OQ Questions asked by an assessor.

7. IS MY ASSESSOR THE ONLY ONE WHO CAN SIGN THINGS OFF IN MY PORTFOLIO?

No. You must also have a WBR who will also sign things off.

Support PACE assessment supports colleges by providing outstanding assessment that gets your on-site work (NVQ) finished in a timely way.

There is lots more to cover, but hopefully we have shed a little light on the NVQ. Next time we can look at what sections your portfolios contain and what you need to get done, by when. Guess what? It’s Health and Safety first!  paceassessment.ac

T R O P P U S R E L L A T INS N A P S G N FROM KI For Kingspan Environmental, whether it’s with new products, specialist training or on the job assistance, installer support is paramount at every stage A qualified plumbing and heating installer can expect to work on a range of residential and commercial assignments, but there is a constant responsibility to work professionally to achieve complete customer satisfaction. Working in customer homes, the installer will be asked to design, select and install, commission, test, maintain, fault find and repair systems to a consistently high standard. Work organisation and flexibility, communication and interpersonal skills, not to mention comprehensive knowledge, will be the universal attributes of the successful plumbers of the future.

Especially when working with domestic hot water storage, installers have to provide a safe and reliable plumbing and heating service, in accordance with relevant standards. From diagnosing malfunctions, through to programming and commissioning, concentration and attention to detail are very much part of the plumber’s armoury as mistakes are largely irreversible, costly and potentially life threatening.

The stakes are high and installers need total confidence in the products they choose to fit. Increasingly, installers will be asked about balancing energy costs with the desire for luxury, high pressure showers and taps, new en-suites and generally more water usage throughout the house. For

large families and households with multiple bathrooms and high hot water demand, installers should be talking to customers about high performance unvented hot water cylinders, which will provide flow rates far faster than a combi boiler and often more economically too.

Impact of regulation changes Since the change in water regulations over 30 years ago, the combi boiler has made quite an impact in the UK but has not been the panacea for all central heating systems that was first predicted. The simple fact that cold mains water is being heated from cold on demand means that flow rate has to be restricted to give the water enough time to get to the correct temperature at the outlet. The more outlets, the less efficient this heat exchange becomes. So, with energy saving becoming a modern day priority, the evidence suggests that the hot water cylinder is here to stay. Larger homes will have bathroom, shower room, en suites & utility room

HOT WATER CYLINDER DESIGN FEATURES As a result, distinguishing design features of hot water cylinders come into play. For example:

01 High grade insulation materials and insulation thickness can dramatically reduce heat loss over a 24 hour period.

02 An internal air gap device not only improves thermal efficiency and reduces heat loss but also does away with the need for a separate, space hungry expansion vessel.

03 Side positioning of the hot water outlet allows the top of the cylinder to be insulated, where, of course, the hottest water is stored.

04 Pipework is also a potential inefficiency so easy access plumbing connections will make a considerable difference.

Kingspan Environmental supplies high performance hot water storage cylinders providing reliable and efficient heating for water and buildings.

Overall, across the range, improvements add up to a higher thermal efficiency performance and 28% improvement in heat loss for a significantly better SAP rating. The design engineering changes have added 45% more insulation without compromising ease of handling and positioning. Better accessibility and connection features mean that a typical installation can be up to 35 minutes faster, whilst also saving on pipework, supporting timber and fittings.

The challenge, then, is for hot water cylinder manufacturers to come up with efficiencies without compromising on capacity, performance and an acceptable domestic footprint. So that’s exactly what Kingspan Environmental has done. With over 50 improvements to cylinder components and production processes, the leading UK cylinder manufacturer has reengineered its bestselling Range Tribune unvented hot water cylinder.

Kingspan Environmental will supply the indirect copper cylinders for the 2016 Final of the HIP UK Heating Apprentice of the Year. Finalists will compete for the coveted title having won through in the regional heats. This is the first year that a hot water cylinder installation has been part of the final test and the apprentices will have to demonstrate their product and system knowledge with the skills and techniques to put them together. Competitors will undertake a series of practical tests based on the workplace which demonstrate their abilities in system and pipework layout, bending and jointing, connections to services, commissioning and testing. With hot water storage, working safely is paramount.

HIP MAGAZINE | WINTER ISSUE 2016 | WATER HEATERS

Combi boilers are often seen as a heating and hot water cure all, providing more or less instantaneous hot water without the need for a storage and expansion system. And yet, when faster flow rates are required, an unvented hot water cylinder may be a more appropriate choice.

FINDING A 360 DEGREE SOLUTION Alan Clarke, technical support manager at Heatrae Sadia, explains...

What makes combi boilers so popular? Homeowners expect their system to provide enough hot water for their household, and this is one of the things that makes the combi boiler so attractive. Add the fact that the combi is easy to install, has no need for hot water controls and is free of a storage tank (freeing up valuable space for the homeowner), and it’s easy to see why it’s so tempting to choose this type of boiler over anything else.

Sounds great. Why wouldn’t I specify a combi? While combis have been developed to deliver higher flow rates for larger households, they are not always the right solution. This is especially true if a household has multiple bathrooms, if people are using a number of showers and baths simultaneously, or if luxury products like jetted air baths – which require

good flow rates to work effectively – are fitted. If faster flow rates are required a more appropriate solution can be a system boiler coupled with a high-performance unvented hot water storage cylinder.

machines and dishwashers? Does the homeowner plan to refit or add a bathroom in the next few years?

How does an unvented hot water storage cylinder work?

Guides from British Standard BS6700, CIBSE and the CIPHE explain how to size a system, and Heatrae Sadia’s SpecPro sizing software (available as a CD or as a download via our website) can also help.

Fed directly from the cold water mains, unvented systems provide powerful showers and fast filling baths, and flow rates are far faster than with a combi boiler. Our Megaflo Eco can deliver up to 72 litres per minute of hot water, and there won’t be a significant drop in performance if more than one tap or shower is used simultaneously (depending on the mains water pressure and flow rate coming into the property).

How is an unvented system sized? Fitting and plumbing an unvented system does not differ much from standard plumbing practice. However, calculating the maximum amount of hot water a household requires is a vital first step that must be taken before any recommendations are made. This involves an analysis of the number of bathrooms at the property, as well as a discussion about the household’s hot and cold water demands. How often are baths and showers used? Are they used simultaneously or at the same time as sinks, basins, washing

Is there anything else I should know? It’s important to check that the mains pressure is at least 1.5 bar and capable of delivering 20 litres of water per minute or more. This is a minimum requirement to provide usable performance for a small property with one bathroom – at lesser values the system will still deliver hot water, however there may be some limitations, especially with multiple draw offs. If the mains supply cannot support the minimum requirements, a boosted supply or an accumulator can provide a solution.  For further information, visit heatraesadia.com or call 01603 420 220.

CLEAN & CLEAR Although this year we might avoid the usual annual price hike, household energy efficiency remains a national hot topic and a key driver behind the need to take greater care of home heating systems, says John Vaughan, Managing Director at ADEY Professional Heating Solutions. One small step for homeowners… It’s believed that around 30% of the carbon emissions produced in this country come from the domestic sector and it’s estimated that household heating accounts for more than 60% of what we use. According to the Energy Saving Trust, boilers also account for around 55% of what we spend in a year on household energy bills.

By simply installing a MagnaClean in just one million of the UK’s 22 million-plus households, we could save in the region of 225,000 tonnes of CO2 annually. That’s equivalent to removing 72,000 cars off the road at a fraction of the cost of the Boiler Scrappage Scheme, and more than likely a fraction of the Green Deal too.

What’s more is that the key to unlocking these savings couldn’t be easier to access, it’s the bread and butter of every installer’s working day; heating system maintenance.

Service warning Therefore ADEY believes that if every household boiler and central heating system in the UK was properly maintained and protected to ensure maximum efficiency, the potential to reduce carbon emissions and make energy savings on a national scale is huge.

For example, during the delivery of the Boiler Scrappage Scheme, Government figures claimed that replacing 125,000 old G-rated boilers (below 70% efficiency at the time) as part of the scheme would save 140,000 tonnes of CO2 annually. This is equivalent to taking 45,000 cars off the road.

Research by ADEY shows that just 46% of the 1,300 UK homeowners surveyed had their boiler serviced in the past 12 months, leaving more than half of systems unchecked. This means that every year, thousands of boilers are left chugging away in the corner without checks to ensure that they’re running efficiently or even safely. In fact, 20% of householders only took any notice of their poor hard-working boiler when something went wrong. While it’s not currently a legal requirement, installers need to encourage homeowners to see that having an annual boiler service is the starting point in a programme of regular heating system maintenance. This promotes heating system efficiency and safety and reduces the financial risk of costly repairs. It goes on saving householders money in the long-term.

CLEAN, FLUSH, MAINTAIN, PROTECT The natural corrosion that happens inside every heating system can cause huge damage to the small parts and narrow waterways of today’s super-efficient condensing boilers, greatly impairing their efficiency. In fact, research shows that the presence of just 5kg of black iron oxide sludge within the system, which is not uncommon, reduces radiator heat output by up to 36%. Few homeowners will understand this, so the industry is reliant upon installers to help get the message across as to why ongoing heating system maintenance is crucial. To help deliver maximum ongoing results following an annual boiler check, ADEY recommends installers adopt its industry-recognised best practice approach that focuses on the simple maintenance mantra of clean, flush, maintain, protect. The combined effect of system cleaning, quality water treatment chemicals and the most effective magnetic filtration can improve heating system efficiency to bring an estimated saving of up to 15% per household. That could amount to a saving of £150–£170 a year for the average three-bedroom property. Today, ADEY MagnaClean filters and MC+ chemicals are collectively protecting three million UK central heating systems helping them operate more efficiently, reducing maintenance bills and cutting emissions.

CHEMICAL WATER TREATMENT + FILTERS = BEST PRACTICE

Anyone training to be a professional installer will understand the importance of an energy efficient central heating system and the need to protect its vital components. With this in mind, Francine Wickham, Global Marketing Director at Fernox explains why chemical water treatment and filtration technology together add up to an ideal solution.

All domestic central heating systems have to be pre-commissioned correctly in line with Part L of the Building Regulations and the Domestic Heating Guide, which dictates that new systems must be chemically cleaned, flushed and dosed with an inhibitor and in hard water areas a scale reducer should also be fitted. The system should then undergo regular maintenance checks to ensure it is protected and continues to run efficiently – reducing fuel bills for homeowners. If left untreated, any new or existing heating system will deteriorate due to the damaging effects of sludge and corrosion, which occurs when water comes into contact with the metal in mixed metal central heating systems, leading to blocked radiators and a boiler that is working harder than necessary to heat up a room. Circulating contaminants can also adversely affect the lifespan of the boiler, causing internal damage and making the boiler more likely to fail or breakdown. When an existing system is heavily contaminated, in many cases best practice suggests that it should be cleaned via a powerflush before dosing with an inhibitor. When selecting chemical water treatment products, always look for a BuildCert approved inhibitor such as Fernox Protector F1 as well as a high performance cleaner such as Fernox Cleaner F3 or Cleaner F5.

Filter technology Furthermore, filter technology can be used

to provide effective protection of the boiler. The Fernox TF1 Filter range, which includes TF1 Total Filter and TF1 Compact Filter is available for domestic systems and uses both hydrocylonic and magnetic action to purge the system of debris. Bringing a long-term value to homeowners, the Fernox TF1 Filters remove and contain magnetic and nonmagnetic contaminants, helping to extend system longevity and increase efficiency.

The unique Fernox Filter Fluid+ Protector contains an inhibitor and active dispersant package... Chemical water treatment products However it is crucial to remember that a filter will not stop the development of scale and corrosion and should not work in isolation – no matter how well it performs. Filters are only ever capable of dealing with the symptoms of a dirty and sludged system; whereas high quality chemical water treatment products are designed to treat and combat the root cause – preventing corrosion from taking place in the first instance. The combination of specially designed chemical water treatment and a filter can also provide an innovative solution for the removal of system contaminants when powerflushing is not a practical option. The unique Fernox Filter Fluid+ Protector contains an inhibitor and

active dispersant package which detects, lifts and delivers sludge and debris to any system filter for safe removal. The product incorporates the Fernox’s proven and trusted Protector F1 inhibitor to ensure that heating systems are also consistently protected against corrosion and scale formation. This integrated approach can help reduce installer time spent on-site and can prove invaluable for heating systems that have continuously to work uninterrupted when downtime is to be avoided.

Evolving technology Combining chemical water treatments with filter technology can provide installers with all the tools required to pre-commission and maintain central heating systems effectively. The good news is that the capabilities of chemical water treatments are constantly evolving – with a variety of products and processes available across all types of heating systems, to ensure that both new and existing heating systems are efficient, durable and constantly protected. As such, it is advisable to keep up-to-date with the latest products and processes. S E L I F O R P R E R U T C E L Have you ever heard of a father and son both lecturing at the same college? When Phil Heritage got in touch from Walsall College to say that his son Dan also taught at the same college we got in touch to find out exactly what it’s like working together! Phil has been at Walsall for a year, and teaching for over 10 years, having previously been a contracts manager in the heating industry. He teaches Level 2 and Level 3 apprentices and says he really enjoys it. His son Dan joined the college staff as a parttime lecturer six months ago, and spends the rest of his time working on the tools which his dad Phil believes is a good mix. Phil is full of praise for his son’s abilities saying ‘it’s difficult to find lecturers who have also worked – or who are working – on the tools, so when this opportunity came up last year I suggested to Dan that he apply. He’s very articulate and has a memory like an elephant, so it’s an ideal job for him! At the moment he’s lecturing Level 1 and some Level 2 students, and has a great rapport with the class.’ It’s great that Phil can provide support for Dan and we asked whether it was slightly bizarre seeing your son (or vice versa your dad) at work every day? Apparently not, even though they share a lift to work and do talk about work in the car as well.

They had previously worked together for 10 years on the tools. Phil adds that Dan is getting better than him at some things, and many of their discussions centre around how they can improve things. Phil says that one of the toughest things at the moment is finding work placements for Diploma students. He says ‘trying to find them a local company where they can do their work experience is challenging. We have to work really hard at that.’ So when the family get together do Phil

and Dan talk shop? Not according to Phil who says ‘we don’t talk about work in a family environment – that wouldn’t be fair on everyone else! Dan has his own family now, but still lives near me. I’m really pleased that he’s gone into teaching alongside his other work. It’s a good opportunity for him to use his experience of the industry to pass on practical knowledge to students.’

STEP UP TO THE BAR

Mira Showers takes us through fitting a bar valve shower – in this case the Coda. It should be noted that such products can be used with fixed or movable inlet pipework, and here the details are for movable inlet pipework.

01

02

03

Install the pipework with 150mm +/- 5mm centres and projecting by 50mm. Do not secure the internal supply pipework within 500mm of the shower. Each pipe should have at least 5mm radial movement – allowing the pipe to be moved by the fitting kit – and hot left – cold right. A rigid plastic guide (not shown) is supplied with the kit to set the pipe centre distance.

Mark and fit each brass wall bracket (arrow pointing upwards), using the slots for the screws – then fit the olives and nuts. Push the offset chrome connector onto the wall bracket and rotate fully clockwise. Fit the flanged retaining screws (not the spacer ring). They will allow the chrome connector to rotate when tightened!

Temporarily fit the valve without washer / filter and rotate the chrome offset connector to get the valve level. Final levelling is done later.

04

05

06

Remove the valve, loosely fit the concealing plates and FLUSH the WATER SUPPLIES until a clear and clean supply is available! In some systems this could take some time.

Fit the sealing washer / filter and then the valve, tightening the retained flat faced connector. At this point the valve may not be level!

Place a spirit level on the valve body and if necessary rotate, in turn, the inlet connector nuts anti-clockwise (gently) which will result in the valve becoming horizontal.

07 Tighten the two conical concealing plates, fit the shower hose, and, if necessary, set the maximum showering temperature. It is wise to show the customer the correct operation of the shower.  Visit mirashowers.co.uk

APPRENTICES Taking on apprentices is a big commitment for any company. We spoke to Tina Holdcroft from Holdcroft Heating to find out what an employer looks for in an apprentice.

Q. A.

How many apprentices do you currently employ?

Q. A.

How many apprentices stay with you after they have finished their course?

Q. A.

How do you recruit your apprentices?

We currently have seven apprentices at Holdcroft Heating. Right from the start we’ve always worked with apprentices, and I believe passionately in giving young people a good start.

There’s a huge shortage of gas engineers, and each apprentice that we’ve employed over the years still works for us. After four years they become our workforce, and highly trained ones at that. So the time that we invest in them is very worthwhile.

We have an established relationship with PM Training, a local training provider that we work closely with. They provide support in terms of making sure the

apprentices turn up for college, and also very importantly that they are committed to four years as an apprentice. They put forward candidates to be apprentices who they feel have the necessary commitment. If they are prepared to commit themselves to four years to become a qualified gas engineer, then we’re prepared to support them.

representing us, so that’s really important. I was approached recently and asked if we’d take on somebody for three months work experience. When he came for the interview, he was wearing a suit so instantly made a good impression. However, what really impressed me was that he said he really wanted to work for us, and had read up all about the company.

Q. A.

Do you get many people dropping out?

Q. A.

Q. A.

What’s the first thing you look for when you meet a potential apprentice?

We’ve seen second year, and third year syndrome so understand how challenging it can be. However, we don’t get many people dropping out and there is always a job for them at the end.

The first thing has to be first impressions. The apprentice is going to be going into people’s homes and

What advice would you give to employers looking to take on an apprentice?

It can be time consuming and challenging, but it’s the most rewarding experience to see apprentices learn and grow with confidence. For example, we have an apprentice at the moment who has asked if he can do callouts. Which is a fantastic thing as he’s growing in confidence and wants to develop his skills.

ADDED SUPPORT THIS SPARES SEASON The winter months always see an increase in distress calls, making it a busy season for spares. Being able to react to emergencies quickly, allowing installers to move on to the next job, and providing the best possible service to homeowners depends on a supportive merchant that can offer innovative solutions. Kevin Williams, Managing Director of Spares at City Heating Spares (CHS), which has outlets within nationwide branches of City Plumbing Supplies, discusses how installers can respond to emergencies and meet tight timescales during the heating season. It’s inevitable that unfortunate breakdowns and issues will occur more commonly during the winter season. There’s no denying that every heating and plumbing failure is urgent, but plummeting temperatures can increase customer expectations and add pressure to already busy installers. Loss of heating can be a significant emergency for a homeowner, particularly if they are elderly. Time is therefore of the essence and being able to identify and source the correct part as soon as possible becomes of paramount importance. Providing solutions to homeowners in an efficient manner will also go a long way to building a loyal customer-base, which is particularly beneficial for installers who rely on word-of-mouth and repeat business.

Spares orders made at 8pm, available at 8am To meet the demand for an incredibly fast turnaround on spares, CHS is continuing to invest in an innovative order and collection service. Strategically located ‘drop boxes’

at branches of City Plumbing Supplies make it possible to place orders before 8pm for collection at 8am, across 300 locations. The popularity of this service is driving continued investment with the roll-out on track to reach 440 branches by the end of the year. The drop box service uses a specialist courier service to ensure orders arrive overnight, ready for collection as soon as the trade counter opens. This includes orders placed on Friday evening for pick-up on Saturday morning. Not only is this an excellent value added service, but it will prove essential during the busy heating season.

Be prepared for any eventuality Freak weather conditions and urgent breakdowns are difficult to predict and protect against, so as well as being reliant on merchants for excellent product availability and fast delivery, it’s advisable to have a comprehensive van stock. Having essential items to hand can be the difference between the quick turnaround of a job and a difficult job which incurs delays and additional cost. Plus, access to a good stock of spares makes it easier to meet wider business demands and therefore maximise the number of jobs that can be completed. Extensive consumable ranges and valuable pieces of kit, such as portable heaters that can be left with customers if an instant fix isn’t

possible, are all available from branches of CPS.

Dedicated spares knowledge Having specialist knowledge on the trade counter to assist with the accurate identification of spares is incredibly valuable to time-pressed installers. In addition to the existing teams within City Heating Spares outlets, investment in the experts of tomorrow is important. This year, CHS has welcomed five new recruits onto its industry-leading scheme after celebrating the graduation of two apprentices into full-time employment. The dedicated apprenticeship programme is the only one of its kind in the spares industry, and plays an integral role in attracting new talent to the thriving market; that demands both product expertise and the ability to meet emergencies by quickly sourcing the most effective solution.

In conclusion… CHS and City Plumbing Supplies are doing their best to ensure everything is in place to provide installers with the support they need to have a successful heating season.

HIP MAGAZINE | WINTER ISSUE 2016 | OIL HEATING

Oil is now by far the cheapest major heating fuel with typical annual costs in Great Britain currently around £793 pa...

A D N A G N I T A E OFF GRID H L I O R O F R A E Y R E P BUM Four million households in the UK are not connected to the mains gas grid. Of these households, an estimated one million in Great Britain use oil (kerosene) for their heating needs and a further 460,000 in Northern Ireland. Approximately 2.4 million households in Great Britain use electricity for heating while around 171,000 use LPG.

National markets The markets in England, Wales and Scotland are broadly similar, with between 12 and 25 per cent of the population offgrid. Heating oil and electricity are the main fuels used. However, in Northern Ireland the picture is very different. Around 80 per cent of households are off-grid and an estimated 80 per cent of these use heating oil. However, a higher proportion of the off grid population in Northern Ireland has the option to connect to mains gas. This reflects the relatively recent roll-out of mains gas networks. With oil boiler sales reaching a five year high and oil prices dropping to a six year low, 2015 has proved a winning year for the oil heating industry and off grid consumers. Purchases of new oil condensing boilers are at their highest level since 2010, with sales from January to November 2015 up 9% on the same period in 2014.

Cost effective Oil is now by far the cheapest major heating fuel with typical annual costs in Great Britain currently around £793 pa – that’s 48.7% cheaper than LPG, 50% less expensive than electric storage heaters and 24% cheaper than mains gas. OFTEC director general Jeremy Hawksley comments: “With prices predicted to remain low for some time, the case for households to stick with, or even switch to oil is strong. This not only spells good news for consumers but also existing oil technicians – as well as those coming new to the industry - who are likely to benefit from an increase in business due to a resurgence in oil.”

dramatic drop in oil prices. “The region we cover has always been a strong area for oil but we are currently working at full capacity, carrying out four or five services every day. We’re also installing at least one high efficiency oil condensing boiler a week and have seen demand for these double over the last year,” said Philip. With such a buoyant market for oil, it’s likely that the demand for skilled heating technicians will rise further, adding pressure on the already acute skills shortage facing the UK’s trade sector. OFTEC therefore welcomes the Government’s commitment to create three million new apprenticeships in the UK by 2020 which will be partially funded by a new 0.5% levy on all large UK employers from 2017. Jeremy Hawksley concludes: “The future for oil certainly looks bright and, as the off-gas home energy market gradually becomes more diverse, OFTEC will remain the symbol of quality for installers, servicing technicians and homeowners alike. We will also continue to campaign for cost-effective and inclusive initiatives to reduce carbon emissions and promote energy efficiency in the UK.” Jeremy Hawksley, director general, OFTEC

TRAILBLAZER FACT FILE THE NEW TRAILBLAZER STANDARD FOR PLUMBING AND DOMESTIC HEATING LAUNCHED IN MARCH 2015 COVERS:  Apprenticeship duration  Job role profile  Entry requirements & expected behaviours  Technical skills & knowledge requirements  A description of the learning & training phases  Assessment requirements  Employer sign off procedures  External recognition by professional institutions. The new standards are expected to come online for apprentices recruited from September 2016.

EAL IS SETTING THE STANDARD Flexible learning for those in the building services sector is one of the key strengths of working or studying with EAL, the specialist skills partner and awarding organisation for the industry. EAL consistently works alongside employers, trade associations, training providers and professional institutes to ensure the apprenticeship framework for plumbing and domestic heating technicians is robust and relevant.

Trailblazers New standards were introduced earlier this year as part of the Government’s Trailblazers initiative and includes a number of improvements aiming to benefit both the learner and their employer. In addition to strengthening core requirements like maths and English, grading will be introduced to encourage apprentices to strive for excellence. A clear link to engineering technician status has also been incorporated to improve and encourage greater professional registration. At the very heart of what EAL does is the learner – preparing and supporting each one from registration to qualification, treating each person as an individual by producing a variety of interactive resources to help them achieve their goal - whether they are an apprentice or

a mature learner in employment. The plumbing and domestic heating qualifications are also portable – everyone studies the same modules – so if a student gets a job or an apprenticeship while in education there is no need to start again, they can seamlessly continue their learning from whatever point they are at.

Plumbing VRQs Product specialist Jason Marsland said: “At EAL we love finding clever ways of making life easier for our customers. That's why we're so excited about our full time plumbing VRQs. “As always, we have designed the qualifications in close consultation with employers to ensure that they meet current and future skills needs. But this time we have also got creative by designing combined units within the suite. “They help utilise resources by combining classes between different qualifications and even different student cohorts. For example, you could run a class on domestic cold water for fulltime, mature and apprenticeship students who are taking an EAL VRQ, NVQ or apprenticeship.

“EAL’s VRQ qualifications give learners a platform from which to launch their career in industry. These qualifications offer progression to related NVQs and apprenticeships that help learners achieve their Gas Safe registration.” Julia Chippendale, managing director of EAL, said: “As always, EAL has worked closely with employers within the plumbing sector to define standards and skills for the plumbing apprentices of today and the future. The Government’s apprenticeship reforms are taking this policy national, spearheaded by the Trailblazer scheme. “Trailblazers are seeing employers, awarding organisations and professional institutes working together to set new standards for apprenticeships to meet skills needs, thereby increasing the value of the vocational pathway to ensure that learners are getting a better deal from their education and the best possible start to their careers.”  For more information talk to our experts by calling 01923 652400 or contacting customercare@eal.org.uk

HIP MAGAZINE | WINTER ISSUE 2016 | WORKWEAR

QUALITY WORKWEAR CAN ASSIST WITH THE HAZARDS OF A PLUMBER IN KEEPING YOU SAFE Plumbers come against a number is hazards on a daily basis. Maurice Morton, sales and marketing director at Dickies explains that quality workwear is just as important as giving them the correct equipment to safely and efficiently carry out daily tasks. As a plumber you need to be able to rely on your workwear clothing, knee and ankle joints in particular are two problem areas for plumbers. Working in more restricted places than other tradesmen, means that workwear products have to be extra comfortable while protecting the wearer’s knees, elbows, head and eyes and be extremely flexible to allow for crouching when working under sink areas for example. It is also important that his trousers are durable. This is where hi tensile fabrics such as cordura come in to action. It means the areas where there is most wear, are not likely to wear away quicker than the rest of the garment.

Redhawk pro trousers

As a plumber you need to be able to rely on your workwear clothing, knee and ankle joints in particular are two problem areas for plumbers. canvas in 285gsm so a heavier weight than the Redhawk Pro (lowest price point option). The trousers utilise a new style of cordura kneepads and trims, which not only looks good, but gives high performance. Cordura is also used on the hem guard to minimise wear and tear. The fit of the max trouser is the same comfortable lower rise as the Redhawk Pro. Triple stitched seams ensure extra strength to high stress areas and top loading kneepad pockets make kneepad insertion easy whilst working. Reflective piping adds a stylish detail, which also brings it in line with the other new collections.

PPE products

Eisenhower max trouser Ideal for plumbers is the Eisenhower max trouser. This sits between the Eisenhower multi pocket and Redhawk Pro multi pocket trousers in terms of money and of technical detailing. The trouser is in 65% polyester, 35% cotton

PPE products, which offer maximum protection, whilst also maintaining comfort. The range includes: Showa gloves, gel knee pads, goggles, safety helmets, bump caps, a range of safety spectacles, ear defenders and ear plugs, safety helmet and visor kits, respirators, disposable respirators along with some new additions to the safety footwear range.

Faxon trainer

Safety footwear The most important element of any item of working apparel is its comfort and durability. This is especially important with regards to safety footwear, more so when you consider that most tradesmen could spend up to nine hours a day working in their footwear. So any safety footwear not only has to be comfortable and provide support to the wearer’s foot but also be strong enough to withstand the rigours of the modern working environment. Over the past couple of years the main trend has been for safety footwear to become lighter in weight and more fashionable, which really started with the use of injected PU sole units. The introduction of composite toecaps and composite material mid-plates has accelerated this demand. Other market requirements, which we have noticed, are the need for the upper profile of safety footwear to be lower. The problem with the design of safety footwear is that these styles need a toecap, which creates a more rounded shape to the upper, but the trend nowadays is for safety footwear to look more casual. Part of the solution is to reduce the shape of the upper profile by applying it lower into the sole unit. This allows for a lower profile footwear style, such as the Faxon Trainer.

PIPE CLIPS AND COVER SYSTEMS FIT FOR THE 21st CENTURY Building contractors working in the busy RMI sector regularly pull up floorboards or tear down plasterwork to discover old pipe runs fixed to timber joists and studs using an assortment of bent nails and brutal looking metal bands. Like timber herring-bone struts and horsehair plaster, such anachronisms are gradually disappearing from our built infrastructure as the pace of refurbishment and redevelopment carries on, but the way the humble pipe clip has metamorphosed into something far more sophisticated and multifunctional is a reflection of just how much the building products industry has advanced since the post-WWII years. Properly securing the pipework is essential to ensuring a safe working system. For domestic installations there are generally three types of pipe clip available, Hinged clips, Open clips and Nail in clips. It is universally recognised that the most secure way to hold a pipe is via a hinged clip which ensures that the pipe has 360 degree support. Open clips are perceived by most professionals as a DIY option and although they offer a good snap tight fixing for the pipe, the clip does not have a closed top and therefore is not as secure as a hinged clip. Traditional copper pipe sizes of 10, 15, 22, and 28mm have been around for many years. Plastic pipe manufacturers came into the market and followed copper sizes with the same dimensions when they were introduced in the 1990s - and therefore the existing pipe clips remained suitable for both copper and plastic pipe. However, in recent years the move towards barrier pipe has introduced some new sizes, mainly 16mm and 20mm. Talon developed a new range of ‘Flexi’ Pipe Clips which are now available to suit these sizes.

Pipe clip spacer Tradesmen tend to be good at improvising, and where pipes are to be insulated it has been common to find a plumber has slipped an offcut of copper pipe behind the clip as a ‘spacer’ for the screw fixing. This allows room for pipe insulation to be fitted, but can look uneven and is a waste of copper, when a simple but effective Pipe Clip Spacer is available to slot into the base of a Hinged or Open Clip. Exposed pipes are rarely attractive, while in situations such as schools or care homes they are considered a potential risk, requiring protection. Happily however, a simple pipe cover profile which just snaps into place once the installation is complete will address the situation: fitting onto a protrusion either side of the Talon Hinged Clip.

Where pipes are to be run beneath radiators, or around a room at skirting level, special brackets are available – including those with

integral pipe clips – onto which the PVC-U profile is simply attached via a push fit tooth mechanism built into the profile. Where larger diameter pipe, such as waste or soil and vent pipes have to be hidden, Talon’s sister company Pendock offers a range of bigger profiles www.pendock.co.uk Talon has grown to become the UK’s best known manufacturer of pipe clips, covers and related products and continue to invest in new product development and have emerged stronger since being purchased by Davidson Holdings. Thanks to the products’ quality, ease of use and cost-effectiveness, Talon pipe clips; continues to move forwards with an increasingly diverse range. Continuing research and development enables Talon to react to changes in market demands, while at its premises in Gillingham, Kent, 24 state-of-the-art injection moulding machines run 24 hours a day to make sure that production keeps pace with demand at the company’s stockists. As a result Talon can therefore now offer a range of 14 hinged clips that covers 20 different pipe sizes from 10mm to 35mm.  Visit talon.co.uk

START AS YOU MEAN TO GO ON For those training to be a professional installer, it is advisable to take advantage of as much support as possible. Here, Ian Kenny, Marketing Director at Graham The Plumbers’ Merchant explains why those starting out should turn towards a modern merchant. Finding a merchant you can rely on is crucial, especially for those just starting on the career path to becoming a professional, qualified installer. It is important to understand that a merchant isn’t simply somewhere to pick up product – it is a place to seek expert guidance and advice throughout your career.

Keeping up-to-date Modern merchants are not about product supply alone. With a whole host of legislation, constant revisions to building regulations and ever-changing Government schemes, merchants can play a vital role in helping to ensure products selected and the work you intend to do will be compliant. At Graham, our teams undertake a huge amount of training every year to remain up to speed with market drivers – so we can ensure we pass on this knowledge to you in branch. The recent changes to the ErP regulations are a good example. Manufacturers are now responsible for providing energy labelling for all of their products, while installers are responsible for providing an energy label for any system they install. This means installers have to know how to calculate a system’s efficiency figure, based on its different components. This must then be added to a ‘package’ label to complete the installation.

Throughout our branch network we have been advising customers of these changes and helping to ensure their work is compliant. In addition to helping you keep up to date with legislation, a merchant is also an ideal place to visit to ensure you have the correct PPE. This is often an area overlooked by installers because it is perceived to be too cumbersome for day-to-day tasks. Unfortunately, this aversion does lead to potential safety risks.

When you begin work on site, remember tasks such as cutting or grinding pipes mean there is a risk of copper or plastic shards flying into the air, so eye protection should always be worn. Ear defenders should be worn if you are, for example, boring a hole through an external wall for an overflow pipe. These can either be in the form of expandable ear plugs or ‘over head’ ear defenders and merchants will be able to talk you through the various PPE options.

...at Graham, our Etrade Counter allows you to order from our Always Available range 24/7. and updates through digital services. This could be managing your account online or purchasing products. For instance at Graham, our Etrade Counter allows you to order from our Always Available range 24/7. We also offer an online news portal: Channel Graham, as well as Twitter and Facebook accounts. These are incredibly popular as customers quite literally have all the information they need at their fingertips. Digital services really do offer added value and mean wherever you are, whatever time of day – you can reach out to your merchant for support. So for those who want to become a professional installer, think about what a modern merchant can offer. It isn’t just about product but the unbiased and expert guidance you need. So start as you mean to go on – and find a merchant you can rely on.

SNICKERS WINTER WARMERS – THE NEW WOOL SWEATER…

SIR STIRLING MOSS PUTS KESTON BOILERS IN POLE POSITION

The new 100% Wool Sweater is the ideal combination with Snickers undergarments to provide a truly warm and cosy wrapper when you’re out on site in the chilly winter months. The special wool weave is really soft but also highly moisture-absorbant and breathable. It provides pure natural wool comfort to keep you warm in really cold conditions. What’s more, it resists odour naturally and can be worn for long periods without washing. With a zip-up neck line collar and polyamide-reinforced elbows and lower arms for enhanced durability, this really is a top quality, highly practical garment for keeping warm and looking smart at work.

Keston Boilers once again overtook the competition when a Heat 55kW boiler was selected to provide high efficiency heating for the Mayfair home of Sir Stirling Moss, OBE, the British former Formula One racing driver. Sir Stirling and Lady Moss have used Keston boilers for over 25 years and when the time came to upgrade their old model there was only one boiler brand they could trust to go the distance. The new Keston Heat 55kW was installed in Sir Stirling’s outdoor boiler house and the ease of fitting meant that the boiler replacement was completed within the day.
