HIP-MAGAZINE.CO.UK UK PLUMBER RECOGNISED AT EUROSKILLS Matthew Barton, employee at W.E. Barton and apprentice at Kendal College, gained a Medallion for Excellence for Team UK in Plumbing and Heating at EuroSkills 2018 in Budapest last September. The competition encourages world-class standards in skills and trades. The Plumbing and Heating competition was held across 3 days as part of ‘Construction and Building Technology’. Matthew said: “Nationals was pretty mad but this was at another level, it has been a good test.”

PLUMBPAL RELEASES PIPELAGGER PRO FOR PERFECT FINISHES Bristol plumbers’ merchant PlumbPal has released a new tool to help students and apprentices get the perfect finish on every job – the PipeLagger Pro. Industry research has proven students are not equipped or educated to execute a professional finish on their workmanship, resulting in a poor finish onsite for customers. Furthermore, when lagging has been installed substandardly around fittings, this has proven to promote heat losses and higher energy consumptions. PipeLagger Pro has been purposely designed with the plumbing and heating installer in mind to eliminate guesswork, minimise wastage and reduce installation time. The pre-formed adjustable profiles accommodate a multiplicity of wall thicknesses, whilst overcoming a diversity of pipework configurations.

CITY COLLEGE NORWICH REFURBISHES WORKSHOP AND LAUNCHES NEW APPRENTICESHIP Graham the Plumbers’ Merchant provided £10,000 to refurbish a workshop at Norwich City College, after it was successful in their College Refresh competition. A further £1,000 came from ADEY after apprentice Anthony Iacovazzo won the 2018 HIP UK Heating Apprentice of the Year competition. Generous donations of boilers, controls, cookers and hobs were made by Worcester Bosch, Beko, and Vaillant, which were installed free of charge by Gasway engineers. Anton, ADEY & Rothenberger also provided specialist equipment for each of the bays at a reduced cost. The college has taken the opportunity of the refurbishment to launch a new Gas Engineering Apprenticeship. The first 14 apprentices on the course recently began their training in the new facilities.

DANFOSS LAUNCHES HEATING CONTROL VIA ALEXA Danfoss has launched a free Smart Home Skill for Alexa – allowing homeowners to use voice commands to control the temperature in their home. The Skill is enabled via the app for the Danfoss Link™ Central Controller or Danfoss TPOne-S™ programmable room thermostat. Once a pairing code provided by the app has been entered into the Alexa system, homeowners can use voice commands to control the temperature in their house for optimum energy efficiency and comfort.

POLYPIPE DONATES BEAR NECESSITIES TO GRIZZLY NEW ARRIVALS Polypipe has helped three rare Asian bears to discover the joy of play and exercise their brains in their new UK home. The Doncaster-based firm donated plastic toys and puzzle feeders to the trio of Ussuri brown bears, which arrived at Yorkshire Wildlife Park in August. The company worked with the park to design a variety of bespoke toys, which have become a hit with brothers Kai and Riku, and 27-year-old female Hanako, following their epic 5,400-mile journey from the Far East. Cameron McLellan, managing director at Polypipe Building Products, said: “As a Doncaster business, we’re delighted to be able to support the park and look forward to donating more items in the future.”

TIPS TO PROTECT VANS FROM THIEVES LeaseVan.co.uk has researched the most effective and affordable ways for van drivers to improve their security. 1. Remove valuables: It’s worth popping valuables in the garage to keep them fully protected. 2. Consider your parking: Park in a garage, on a driveway, close to your front door or in a well-lit area covered by CCTV. 3. Get a lockable tool box: This may discourage thieves. 4. Prioritise security: Most modern vans offer a good range of security features – think about security over appearance. 5. Invest in simple security upgrades: Handbrake locks and heavy-duty steering wheel locks are just some simple measures to boost security. 6. Look at the latest technology: Check out the more advanced electronic alarms and vehicle tracking devices.

THE INDUSTRY’S DIRTIEST LITTLE SECRET REVEALED Installers were asked to share their top piece of advice for using water treatment or filters via Twitter. At the end of each week, a panel of judges voted for their favourite entry. Liam Ingarfield from Ezi-Flow Plumbing and Heating was chosen as the overall winner of the competition in a public poll on Twitter that saw him clinch the top spot with 53% of the vote. Liam, who won a £200 holiday voucher, said: “It’s great to see Sentinel doing their bit to encourage installers to share tips, I picked up some very valuable hints myself and I’m glad others found my entry useful.”

It’s been an exciting few months for HIP digitally, as more and more people have come across our new website. We took our Kahoot! quizzes on the road before Christmas, visiting colleges around the country and showing students and apprentices how they can help support their studies in a fun, interactive way. Plus, it’s a great excuse to get your phones out during class! If you haven’t checked them out yet, what are you waiting for? There are a mix of quizzes based on topics within the syllabus, or more general quizzes based on terminology and products. The last few months on social media have been great at HIP. We surpassed 5,000 followers on Twitter and celebrated with a giveaway, with ADEY providing a bundle as the top prize. Not stopping there, we ran a 12 Days of Christmas giveaway with around 2,500 entrants hoping to win prizes from the likes of Stanley, WAGO, Mira Showers, Alpha Heating Innovation, Polypipe, Wirquin, Triton Showers, Pegler and ADEY. Starting in February, we will be launching our new Employer of the Month award where you can nominate your employer if they’ve gone above and beyond in their training and supervision. Take a look at our website for the full details. We will be posting fun content regularly on our YouTube channel over the coming months, including highlights from the upcoming HIP UK Heating Apprentice of the Year competition. So stay tuned to all of our social media channels!

WHAT'S NEW?

DIGITAL COLUMN

These last few months have seen the plumbing community come together like never before, as #noVANber saw nearly 40,000 tradespeople, their friends and families sign a petition for the government to take van theft more seriously. The petition, set up by plumber Peter Booth (@pbplumber), explained how much of an impact the loss of a van and tools can have on a tradesperson, as it can lead to time out of work, cost of replacements and loss of livelihood. Although the petition didn’t reach the 100,000 signatures it needed to be debated in Parliament, its nearly 40,000 signatures prompted a response from the Government. More than anything, #noVANber united tradespeople from all spheres across social media, and even led to offerings of free, unused tools from tradespeople to those who had been victims of van or tool theft. In the spirit of bringing together the plumbing community, we have some great interviews in this edition with everyday plumbers who were training just like you once. Jon-Marc Sullivan, winner of the 2013 HIP UK Heating Apprentice of the Year competition fills us in on what he’s been up to since, while our Plumber in Profile, Andy Cam, talks about his business and best stories.

@pbplumber In this edition, we also take a crossover into other trades. As technology advances, simple and efficient appliance control becomes more and more desirable for customers, meaning electrical elements are now included in many more household appliances. As everyday objects become internet connected, and the market becomes increasingly environmentally conscious, electrical installation is fast becoming crucial for plumbers, and WAGO tells us all about ways to make this easier. Graham the Plumbers’ Merchant also keeps us up-to-date with smart heating controls in this issue, while our App-rentice feature showcases some of the best apps on the market for making a plumber’s job easier, safer and more efficient. In the trend of keeping up-to-date, we devote some time to training in this issue, with Grohe, Vaillant and Triton telling us about their manufacturer training schemes and ways to keep your trade top of the game. The heart of HIP is you, our incredible students and apprentices, the future of the industry. We’re so lucky to be part of such an incredible learning community, and we’re so excited to cover that in our HIP on Tour and Through the Keyhole features in this edition. We’ve loved meeting so many of you throughout the last year, and we can’t wait for more in 2019. So, without further ado, flip the page and get learning!

PLUMBER PROFILE: ANDY CAM

HIP Magazine: How did you get into plumbing? Andy Cam: I was on the first ever Youth Opportunities Programme which gave me great knowledge and skills and built the foundation for me wanting to own a heating company. I did a 3-year City & Guilds course and a further 2-year Advance Craft certification. HIP: How long have you been a plumber? AC: 39 years! I’ve seen many changes but I’m still passionate about plumbing and welcome future changes! HIP: What do you believe makes your company different? AC: The personal touch! Customer service is key to building a strong reputation and client base. I ensure this is passed on to all apprentices that work alongside me. Consistently updating my knowledge through courses is also key to staying one step ahead. HIP: What’s your favourite part of the job? AC: Knowing you have helped somebody, solved a problem, that you are keeping people warm... cosywarm!

HIP: What advice would you give people looking to get into the industry? AC: Make sure you join a reputable company that is willing to invest time into you as an individual to develop your skills. Remember to listen well and ask questions! HIP: How do you use social media? AC: I am very active on Twitter and Instagram, which I use to keep abreast of what’s happening within the trade, review great products I have found and give tips. I like having fun with it, I don’t take myself too seriously! HIP: What’s your best client story? AC: I was working with an electrician for a sweet little old lady. She brought us many cups of tea, always accompanied by a plate of biscuits. I don’t like biscuits so the electrician would scoff them down. On day 3 I set about getting the teas and biscuits. I opened the tin to see several biscuits surrounding not only a half-eaten mouldy sandwich but a pair of false teeth! I was dying with laughter when I showed the electrician what he had been eating all week!

HIP: Which brands are you a fan of? AC: Ideal and Vaillant have the best innovative boilers with excellent backup services. I really rate parts from Thomas Dudley and McAlpine because they’re robust and user friendly. They are the Rolls Royce of plumbing and I love that they are made in Britain.

PREVIOUS WINNER INTERVIEW JON-MARC SULLIVAN

With the 2019 HIP UK Heating Apprentice of the Year Competition nearly upon us, we decided it was time to catch up with an old friend. Jon-Marc Sullivan won the competition back in 2013, and we had a chat with him about his experience and what he’s been up to since. HIP Magazine: Tell us a little bit about yourself. Jon-Marc Sullivan: I studied at K College in Kent and graduated in 2013. I’ve been in the building industry for 14 years since leaving school. HIP: What originally made you enter the HIP UK Heating Apprentice of the Year Competition? JS: I first heard of the competition when my tutor was assessing my college work and suggested that I should enter. I was very proud and honoured to be considered. HIP: Can you describe a little bit about the competition? JS: During the heats, I felt very nervous. I’m not sure if it was

because of the competition or the pressure. My grandfather, who mentored me, and my fellow students, believed I could win. I was put on a very high pedestal. Once we had received the competition brief, I put in extra hours and started to feel more confident. To anyone entering this year I'd say, believe in yourself. You’re here because professionals recognised your abilities. While you will inevitably feel the pressure, it’s a fantastic opportunity and you should feel very proud. HIP: How has winning Apprentice of the Year helped you? JS: It helped build my confidence and prepare for my future. It was the highest achievement an

apprentice could receive, which was recognised by family, friends, trades and businesses. As a result of the award I was invited onto The Paul O’Grady Show and TV regional news. My family plugged it all over social media, much to my embarrassment! Without HIP, my goals would have been a lot harder to achieve.

“ Without HIP, my goals would have been a lot harder to achieve ”

HIP: What have you been up to since you graduated? JS: I worked with my grandfather until his retirement, working on million pound house boats, for English Heritage and for celebrities. When he retired, I started my own business, Coalesce Construction Ltd, covering building work across the south of England. Over the last year, we have grown from a team of 3 to having 14 tradespeople, 5 vans, a centralised office and a warehouse. We work for prestigious breweries, healthcare and architectural firms, and have all the accreditations to support the entire building sector. Our ethos is to look after our people, raise the standards of the industry and meet expectations of quality and value. HIP: What are the best and worst things about being a plumber? JS: The best part is that every day is different – I face a wide variety of challenges. And, of course, knowing our customers are satisfied with our work. The worst thing is that so many people believe plumbing is just changing a tap or a flush. But there is so much more to it. Our trade involves specialist work which needs correct training and the support of good mentors. HIP: What’s your best plumbing story? JS: One day I was working in a multi-million pound house. I was in the final stages of a radiator fitting, lying on the dust sheets covering the beautifully thick, expensive cream

carpets. In comes the customer, a lovely lady, very wealthy and always pleased with our work. She brings in a cuppa and places it beside me… yes, on the carpet. As she leaves, in bounds the pet dog, tail wagging, tongue flapping, jumping and licking my face. Surprised by the slobbering, I jumped up, catching the cup and throwing the contents across the carpet. It was no longer cream. Hopping up and down praying for a miracle, I soon realised my current frenzy wasn’t going to help. After checking the customer hadn’t seen, I began my SOS cleaning programme. It was like something out of a late-night ‘before and after’ teleshopping ad. Your plumber is now a carpet cleaner! Even better, the dog was still climbing all over me. I’ll never know how I got every last drop of tea out of that carpet.

HIP: What is your greatest achievement? JS: My greatest career achievement is winning the HIP Apprentice of the Year competition, which led onto my next greatest achievement, establishing my own business with my co-directors. HIP: Do you have a brand that you swear by? JS: Rothenberger. HIP: Would you encourage others to do an apprenticeship? JS: I have 2 young operatives who we will be supporting in a workplace apprenticeship. Apprenticeships are the future; training and support is required to ensure that standards are raised every year. HIP: Is there a particular person who has really influenced you? JS: My grandfather is my ultimate role model. He’s an amazing technician and people speak of his work throughout the industry. I am also blessed by having a good business mentor, my mother. Growing up in her office provided the business foundations required to support the future of Coalesce. HIP: Have you got any advice for current students? JS: Listen, study, practice, grasp opportunities and put in the effort, it will pay off. Good tradespeople have pride in their work and will never be short of it. Your reputation is your future.

Last year’s winner, Anthony Iacovazzo, from City College Norwich, said: “I thought I was dreaming at first. The quality of the other lads’ work was unreal. I knew it would be close but I didn’t think I’d get it!” When asked why he decided on plumbing he answered, “I didn’t want to do the job I was doing for the rest of my life so I did a plumbing course and I’ve never looked back since.” Taking part in the competition can do amazing things for a plumber’s career, and we now have 10 winners out in the world. We had a proper catch up with 2013 winner Jon-Marc Sullivan on page 12-13 of this issue to find out what he’s been up to since his win. Pick up our Summer issue to meet the talented 2019 winner. We can’t wait to see all competing apprentices and their lecturers throughout the next couple of months. The HIP UK Heating Apprentice of the Year competition is an incredible showcase of young plumbing talent, as well as a great opportunity for student plumbers to connect with each other and with industry experts.

LEADING THE WAY IN SMART

TECHNOLOGY

Smart and connected home technology is increasing in popularity, with the amount of homes currently owning at least one smart home product set to increase from 26% to 59% by 2022. Natalie Bird from Graham The Plumbers’ Merchant tells us how installers can maximise cross-selling opportunities.

With 38% of homes looking to own a smart heating device within 5 years, the plumbing and heating industry is in a prime position to penetrate the market and cross-sell smart controls. However, it’s important to note the difference between the various controls available. > CONNECTED HEATING CONTROLS These handy tools allow the user to control heating and hot water remotely via a smartphone or tablet, so they are ready whenever the homeowner requires. Some are more intuitive, providing automated control by learning behaviours. For example, they can calculate preferred temperatures and routines by monitoring occupancy and adjustments, and then build a heating management schedule.

Gateway, which will then use the thermostats to turn the heating in that room off. This will conserve energy with ease. With increasingly positive attitudes to smart technology in heating and hot water controls, installers should become familiar with the technology available. By doing so, installers can ensure added profit by explaining the benefits of heating controls when installing products such as boilers.

“ 38% of homes are looking to own a smart heating device within the next 5 years ”

RADIATORS: TRY BEFORE YOU BUY Barlo Radiators’ augmented reality allows consumers to test out the look of radiators in their homes.

“ The app gives installers easy access to the Barlo Design portfolio ”

Installers have been given a groundbreaking way to specify designer radiators thanks to the industryfirst augmented reality (AR) app by Barlo Radiators. > WHAT IS IT? Using advanced AR technology, the Barlo Designer Radiator App helps consumers visualise how different designer radiators would appear in their home – allowing them to virtually ‘try before they buy.’ The app has been created with installers in mind, presenting them with a new sales tool that helps add value when communicating with customers. Through its simple and intuitive design, installers can show customers how multiple styles, sizes and colours could impact on their home aesthetic.

PUT A SPRING

IN YOUR Electrical installation is fast becoming a crucial skill for installers, particularly in the era of smart homes and devices. Fortunately, new developments in wiring technologies are making electrical installations easier than ever before, says Paul Witherington at WAGO. Checking and testing screw terminal after screw terminal, particularly in lofts and other hardto-reach areas, can be a tedious job. This is further exacerbated when working up ladders, which can lead to a higher risk of accident and injury. As installations become more complex, screw connections mean that installers have to put in more time to ensure that every connection is screwed in securely and safely. If a screw is under or overtightened, this can potentially lead to faults that can cause a hazard to building occupants.

“ Spring pressure connection is a new development that can help to make wiring much less hassle ”

> SPRING PRESSURE TECHNOLOGY Spring pressure connection is a new development that can help to make wiring much less hassle, and reduce installation times by up to 50%. No screwdriver is required – wires are connected simply by inserting a stripped conductor and closing the clamp. It is then completely secure until reopened. The spring mechanism applies the optimal level of force to the wire, holding the conductor in place without damaging it. This completely eliminates the

24

possibility of under or over-tightening, reducing faults while ensuring good quality connections. A growing range of accessories are now available for heating and plumbing installers incorporating spring pressure technology. For example, a new 32-lever-operated wiring centre makes it possible to wire anything from a simple lighting circuit to a more complex heating

H IP I WI NTER 2 0 1 9 I E L ECTRICAL INSTAL L ATI ON

circuit in a fraction of the time. A range of junction boxes from WISKA, Spelsberg and Connexbox have all recently been launched, designed for use specifically with WAGO connectors, plus a range of holders which allow customers to create their own custom enclosures. Spring pressure technology allows installers to carry out wiring jobs more quickly, safely and easily. Time is money, and clearly if more jobs can be completed quickly, this frees up installers to move onto the next job or project, making better use of resources, and ultimately making your work more profitable.

THE COOLEST HEATING SYSTEM ON THE MARKET Steve Harris, Technical Services Engineer for Hep2O at Wavin, explains more about underfloor heating (UFH). UFH is a network of pipes beneath the floor’s surface which uses natural radiation to transfer heat into a room. Compared to traditional methods, it offers lots of pros – UFH has little to no impact on indoor air quality, supporting general well-being, and spreads heat more effectively.

> MULTI-TASKING TECH Despite its name, UFH can actually be used for cooling rooms, too. ‘Underfloor cooling’ is essentially a conventional, wet underfloor heating system. Cold water, sourced through either air or ground source heat pumps or a chiller, circulates through

> FROM FLOOR TO CEILING What you might be surprised to know is that UFH technology doesn’t necessarily need to be installed under the floor at all! Underfloor heating can, in fact, be placed in any part of a building’s structure. For example, the walls. While this is not often done as a standalone solution, UFH might be installed in the walls or ceiling when the floor in question has a small surface area. Doing this helps to maximise the heat output potential - a key example would be in a bathroom design. If a customer required extra heat in their bathroom, UFH could be placed in the walls or ceiling to boost the output.

EVOLUTION OF OIL HEATING Oil boiler manufacturers have made great strides to improve appliance efficiencies and safeguard the future of oil heating, explains Anna Wakefield from Grant UK.

HOT TIP KEEP ON TOP OF NEW LEGISLATION THAT WILL AFFECT PRODUCT INSTALLATIONS AFTER YOUR TRAINING

As an apprentice, it’s important to look at the legislation which will affect installations once you have left college. One recent international commitment for domestic boilers is the next phase of the EU’s Energyrelated Products Directive. This new legislation sets out maximum nitrogen oxides (NOx) emission levels that space heaters will need to meet, reducing overall NOx emissions. For oil-fired boilers, the target is set at a maximum of 120mg/kWh, so all oil boilers placed on the market since 26th September 2018 need to be compliant. Advances in burner technology coupled with Grant’s efficient boiler designs have enabled our Vortex Pro and Eco boiler ranges to achieve these new targets with virtually no visible change. The range was recently given a Which? Best Buy for the second year running, including

30

low NOx models such as the Vortex Pro Utility in both standard and system variants and Vortex Pro Combi in both internal and external versions - all of which incorporate the new technology. The VortexBlue External was also included, and is the first and only blue flame oil-boiler to receive this accolade.

“ Advances in burner technology have made Grant able to achieve these targets ” > HYBRIDS Hybrid models provide a bridge between renewables and traditional heating methods. The Grant VortexAir, for example, unlocks the benefits of green energy to off-gas households. It combines an Aerona³ inverter driven air source heat pump with

H IP I WI NTER 2 0 1 9 I O IL HE AT IN G

a VortexBlue oil-fired boiler and, in distress purchase situations, allows for the immediate restoration of a property’s heating while also enabling homeowners to introduce greener energy into their homes. A hybrid system provides flexibility when it comes to installation. The oil boiler and heat pump can either be installed at the same time or in 2 stages, with the boiler installed first to restore a home’s heat and hot water and the heat pump installed later. Furthermore, the Hybrid’s oil boiler can either be sited internally as a stand-alone unit or externally alongside the heat pump, depending on the availability of space. Oil heating has evolved to encompass lower emmissions and renewable technology. Check out our website for more information and product updates.

THE GREEN ANSWER TO RURAL HEATING Rural energy provider Calor has launched BioLPG, a new renewable fuel made from waste materials that can significantly reduce your customer’s carbon footprint.

“ BioLPG can reduce your customer’s carbon footprint by up to 38% per cent compared to heating oil ”

BioLPG is chemically identical to standard LPG - this means it’s compatible with current LPG heating systems and appliances, and the system requires no additional upgrades or adjustment. Therefore, if your customer is currently using conventional LPG, it’s a hassle-free switch.

In addition, an LPG boiler can often be a more low-cost option to buy and fit, costing significantly less than an oil boiler. Aside from savings on the initial outlay, thanks to the increased efficiency LPG can offer, there are also savings on long-term energy costs.

?

> EASY TO INSTALL As BioLPG works with standard LPG systems, it can be a more costeffective option to install than other renewable options such as air source heat pumps, while still giving the homeowner the ability to ‘go green’.

32

DID YOU KNOW? BIOLPG IS CHEMICALLY IDENTICAL TO STANDARD LPG

H IP I WI NTER 2 0 1 9 I L P G HE AT IN G

> INSTALLER BENEFITS Throughout the switch to BioLPG, Calor offers a range of support and incentives to its Installer Community. The scheme rewards installers with up to £250 for every successful Calor LPG conversion. There is also a ‘Find an Installer’ tool on the Calor website that helps potential customers to find a local LPG gas engineer for their boiler service, installation and maintenance, generating valuable leads for rural gas engineers. What’s more, Calor also recently upgraded its online LPG tariff quote tool to now include BioLPG, making it easier for installers to offer this greener option to customers. Ultimately, installers play a vital role in providing information on new fuels such as BioLPG to homeowners, and with a range of tools, services and incentives available, there is nothing stopping rural installers not to get on board with greener gas.

THE BEST WAY TO GROHE YOUR Chris Penney, Training Manager at GROHE UK, talks us through their new training facility. We plan to offer some exciting new training schemes for installers in 2019 and beyond. The first of these, which we believe to be the most ideal way of gaining a strong understanding of our products, is to attend a training course at our brand new training facility in our UK Head Office, based at Heathrow Airport. Here we have a new working water shower cubicle where installers can do a live install of our products, supported by myself and other GROHE product experts. We have invested in making our training room fit for purpose and feel that hands on, faceto-face is the best way to approach product training, whilst also strengthening our rapport with integral customers. We plan to host 6 product - specific training sessions at Heathrow throughout 2019. Another of our focuses will be to establish a verification process for GROHE installers, who will be able to undertake training to become certified GROHE-approved installers. This would lead to publication of their details on our website’s installer and showroom locator tool. Customers would be able to contact these installers directly, helping to drive more business to them whilst ensuring more and more installations are carried out by those who demonstrate a real expertise and understanding of our products.

VENTS, FLUES

& CHIMNEYS: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW As an apprentice, you are probably working towards becoming Gas Safe qualified on the Level 3 pathways. Therefore, as part of your learning you will be covering this important subject as an assessment. CIPHE tells you what you need to know.

> ALWAYS READ THE INSTRUCTIONS

> BACK TO BASICS When burning fossil fuels, you have to go back to the basics of the fire triangle and the combustion process. The removal of combusted gases requires a flue or chimney system terminating to the atmosphere in a safe location. OXYGEN

HEAT

FUEL

All flues and chimneys require oxygen. This can be achieved either by bringing in fresh air from outside through mechanical means or by adding vents to external walls supplying outside air, or natural draught. There are many factors that affect ventilation requirements, such as the maximum heat input in Kilowatts found on the appliance data badge, or the manufacturer’s instruction booklet.

42

You should always carefully read the manufacturers’ instructions prior to installing the appliance in order to work out the correct location for the flue termination. The minimum permissible distance from the flue air inlet to the openable window is 300mm. However, manufacturers may allow 150mm with the use of a pluming kit. Ultimately, you must ensure that no exhaust fumes feed back into the property as this can lead to carbon monoxide poisoning, which can be fatal. Therefore, it is advisable to install an approved CO detector. Domestic boilers have become simpler to install over the years with the advantage of telescopic flues. These have the added safety benefit of being room-sealed. However, you should always consult manufacturers’ instructions for correct siting and installation of flues.

> 300mm

“ Ensure that no exhaust fumes feed back into the property, as this can lead to carbon monoxide poisoning ” > SAFETY FIRST Installation of flues and chimneys might require other trades, such as a bricklayer, roofer, scaffolder or electrician. In almost every case, working at height and the associated risks should be at the forefront of your mind.

GROW YOUR BUSINESS, GROW YOUR POWER FLUSH

Daniel Norstrom of Norstrom Proflush, manufacturer of power flushing machines for over 20 years, talks about the benefits of power flushing, and why it doesn’t have to flush out your bank account.

Corrosion debris (or sludge) in a heating system can affect its ability to heat the property and can also reduce a boiler’s life expectancy. Sludge build up in radiators may cause customers to complain of lack of warmth in certain areas of the house. A power flush is the most efficient way to tackle this issue and remove built up sludge from the heating system. Adding power flushing to your repertoire provides a good sales opportunity with a lot of value for customers. It will prolong the life of their boiler and ensure that

their home is heated consistently. However, quality power flushing equipment can be a large investment for smaller businesses. This is why the Proflush range of power flushing units has been designed to grow with your business. The high quality Proflush Professional units pack a punch, with 150 litres-per-minute flow rate and a maximum operating temperature of 85°C. These are ideal for growing businesses because they can be upgraded at any time. Simple upgrade packs can turn them into a

Proflush Professional Thermal or a Proflush Professional Magmaster. With a Magmaster, in-line magnets give maximum debris collection and allow customers to easily see the sludge removed from their system. The Thermal pack is ideal for those who work regularly with systems where the boiler can’t heat the system water. These upgrade packs allow you to spread the cost of your investment into power flushing over time, expanding the functionality of your equipment in line with your business needs and customer requirements.

POWER FLUSHING MYTHS DEBUNKED Kamco are the industry’s power flushing experts. Here, MD Keith MacBain takes on some of the myths that come with the job. > A POWER FLUSH WILL CAUSE LEAKS Clearflow pumps are designed so that the maximum pressure is 2 bar – it is a high flow rate that makes power flushing effective, not high pressure. Occasionally systems may have radiators with deep corrosion pits, with only a scab of rust preventing a leak. The vigorous flow rate may dislodge the scab, but this stage of corrosion means that the leak would eventually occur even without a power flush. > YOU CAN’T POWER FLUSH MICROBORE SYSTEMS This is a myth, but it is wise to allow more time. Before quoting, check the condition and heat output of each radiator. It is a good idea to change twin entry valves to conventional ones to make flushing more effective > YOU CAN’T FIRE A COMBINATION BOILER TO HEAT UP THE and gain a more even heat output. WATER DURING A POWER FLUSH Pre-treat microbore systems with a non-acidic flushing chemical to This is a myth, but you might need > If the boiler senses a lack of loosen up the corrosion debris that to do some sideways thinking! pressure, reverse the pump’s can build up in tight pipework bends. direction of flow. The maximum > THE PRESSURE FROM A POWER FLUSHING PUMP WILL DAMAGE THE BOILER This one is an old wives’ tale! For safety reasons the internals of a boiler have to withstand 4.5 bar – a power flushing pump will never exceed 2 bar.

> If the boiler won't fire because the circulator pump has been removed to connect the flushing pump, some boilers can be persuaded to fire by adjusting the control panel. The boiler will not overheat, because a Clearflow pump moves water through the boiler much faster than normal, taking heat away from the heat exchanger.

water pressure from your pump is on the output side and pressure falls away throughout the system, dropping to zero as the liquid drops back into the tank. > If necessary, increase the pressure in the system by partially closing the isolating valve on the return side of the flushing pump while the boiler is heating up the water.

HOT TIP WHEN INSTALLING A NEW BOILER, ONLY FLUSH THE HEATING SYSTEM. NEVER INCLUDE THE BOILER IN THE CIRCUIT TO AVOID PUSHING DEBRIS INTO THE BOILER

46

> YOU NEED TRAINING With a good working knowledge of heating systems, power flushing is straightforward. You can follow the manual, find further information at www.kamco.co.uk or watch our YouTube video. For in depth understanding, Kamco run training sessions for engineers.

KEEP IT SEALED Using a filter within a central heating system is best practice to ensure that any debris is removed before damaging build-up occurs. Francine Wickham at Fernox talks about the latest innovation – the non-lidded filter.

Of the number of filter options on the market, many include a removable lid. In order to service a lidded unit, the installer must open the lid and remove any debris build-up. An O-ring sits between the filter and the lid to ensure a watertight seal. Once the lid is removed, the seal is broken and the ring will need replacing upon re-assembly. If it is not replaced, this can lead to leaks and reduced performance. Lidded filters therefore have ongoing costs as new O-rings need to be purchased. This method can also be time-consuming and messy if the filter is full of debris. The TF1 Sigma Filter from Fernox provides a solution. This is the first non-lidded composite polymer filter in the UK, using Hydronic Particle Separation (HPS) technology and magnetic filtration to remove debris efficiently. The HPS decreases the velocity of all debris as it passes through the filter. This ensures that the magnet can effectively capture the magnetic debris whilst the non-magnetic debris is encouraged to settle in the body of the filter. The magnet is made using premium grade neodymium, guaranteeing a highly efficient capture rate for continued and consistent levels of collection. Both types of debris are removed during draining – removing the magnet allows the magnetic debris to drop to the ‘quiet area’ at the bottom of the filter. Then open the drain

valve until the water runs clear and reinsert the magnet, before restarting the boiler. The TF1 Sigma Filter remains watertight due to double radial seals located between the upper and lower mouldings within the body of the filter, and between the manifold and the main body. The TF1 Sigma Filter can be installed in a number of pipework orientations and is available with either high-quality valves or slipsocket connections. There is also a 22mm version and a 28mm version, making the TF1 Sigma Filter suitable for a range of applications. To find out more about the TF1 Sigma Filter please visit:

THE FUTURE OF

MAGNETIC FILTRATION Many parts of our lives now benefit from connected technology and ADEY is the first magnetic filtration manufacturer to harness its benefits in the new MagnaClean Professional3 Sense – the industry’s first and only Wi-Fi enabled magnetic filter.

ADEY’s game-changing magnetic filter not only provides high performance system protection, it also predicts potential system problems and offers connected preventative maintenance. Using ADEY’s unique Sense technology, the filter detects the level of magnetite collected, preventing ongoing system damage by alerting installers so problems can be treated before it’s too late. MagnaClean Professional3 Sense incorporates ADEY’s market-leading and proven f ilter per formance and benefits, with the addition of Wi-Fi and battery-powered monitoring technology. This enables it to selfdetect how much sludge has been captured and removed from circulation. Magnetite capture is easily monitored both in situ, using LEDs incorporated on the canister design, or remotely via the ADEY ProClub App. The app

provides installers with complete Professional3 Sense filters they’ve fit ted, repor ting magnetite and battery levels, service information and recommended remedial actions to maintain system health. It also enables automated warranty registration. > MAGNETIC FILTERS ADEY is also further expanding its comprehensive range of magnetic filters with the addition of its new super compact MagnaClean Atom™. Research reveals that one of the biggest barriers to fitting a magnetic filter is space, with 47% of installers citing it as a problem. With just 115mm needed for installation, the new Atom ensures effective magnetic filtration can be adopted even in the tightest of spaces. The design of the new filter carries all the quality hallmarks installers have come to expect from ADEY, such as its

SOFT SALES

The UK water softener market is relatively untapped, making it a serious revenue source for installers, says Kevin Johnson, MD of Monarch Water. Limescale is a major problem for 13 million UK households in hard water areas. With only around 6% owning a water softener, the potential for sales is phenomenal. “The fact that water softeners can be fitted with any boiler means every home in a hard water area is a potential customer,” says Kevin. > SOFT SELL Educating customers about the problems associated with limescale and the advantages of installing a water softener is the key to securing sales. Kevin gives us his guide:

> REDUCED EFFICIENCY The average annual water consumption for a family living in a hard water area produces around 70kg of limescale annually, the majority of which clings to the inside of pipes. This coats heating elements in boilers, washing machines and dishwashers, making them less efficient and more costly to run.

DID YOU KNOW? WATER SOFTENERS CAN ALSO REMOVE ACCUMULATED LIMESCALE BUILD UP

> COSTLY BREAKDOWNS

> DISPEL THE MYTHS

According to British Water, just 1.6mm of limescale on a heating element reduces its efficiency by up to 12%, which can lead to increased likelihood of breakdowns and a lower equipment lifespan.

Many people incorrectly believe that softened water contains salt. In fact, there is around 4 times more sodium in a glass of milk than a glass of softened water. Softened water has actually been classified as ‘wholesome water’ by WRAS since 2007.

> FINANCIAL SAVINGS By installing a water softener, customers will not only benefit from scum-free bathrooms and scale-free kettles, but will save money on energy, detergents and toiletries too. scale protection system

> HIDDEN BENEFITS Water softeners not only prevent limescale build up once installed, they actually remove any scale that has already accumulated over the years.

“ The potential for water softener sales is phenomenal ” 52

?

H IP I WI NTER 2 0 1 9 I WAT E R T RE AT M E N T

> THE BIGGER PICTURE Installers need to highlight to customers the long term benefits of investing in a water softener. With some water softeners still going strong after 30 years, payback is relatively quick. Making savings of around £200 a year once installed, the running costs of around £8-10 per household member per year are negligible.

MAKE THE RIGHT CHOICE: THE CE MARKING For the new generation of installers coming into the industry, it is important that they play their part to ensure products are ‘fit for purpose’ and that we all take care of our valuable resources of water and energy by opting for sustainable products. The UK market is flooded with products that don’t meet the required ‘fit for purpose’ safety and quality standards. Many bathroom products should, by law, be carrying the CE marking. Installers should seek out suppliers that provide evidence of compliance in their products.

DEFINITIONS CE MARKING: A MARK PUT ON PRODUCTS TO SHOW THAT THE PRODUCT COMPLIES WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF EUROPEAN HEALTH, SAFETY AND ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION LAWS
