APPRENTICE OF THE YEAR 2020 COMPETITION IS FINALLY COMPLETE!

Massive congratulations to this year’s winner, Thomas J Thomas, who despite the strange circumstances managed to come out on top in this career-boosting opportunity and join the group of 11 previous winners. Turn over the page to read his reaction to winning the competition.

ozens of competitors took part in seven regional heats between January and March across the country, before the lockdown caused the competition to be postponed. The seven regional winners completed a short online written test. The results were combined with their score from the regional heats and the top three went on to a one-day live final at their own colleges on 29th September 2020. The top three were: Joseph Parkinson (University Academy Holbeach), Thomas J Thomas (Coleg Llandrillo) and Harry Pegler (SGS College).

HIP Magazine’s Emily Hilton said: “The standard of competition was excellent this year, it’s wonderful to see the next generation of plumbing and heating professionals showcase their skills. We’re thrilled that the 2020 final went ahead in this new format which allowed competitors to compete in the final safely.”

As well as the prestige that comes from winning the competition, each year there are fantastic, career-boosting prizes up for grabs. The prizes this year have been donated by well-known industry names including sponsors ADEY, Worcester Bosch, Pegler Yorkshire, DEWALT, Mira Showers, Graham The Plumbers’ Merchant, RA Tech, Wilo, WAGO, WaterSafe, Wavin, Kingspan, Blaklader and Volkswagen.

I’m so proud of her winning and so is the whole team at the college.”

Daniel said HIP Apprentice of the Year was the first competition he had entered and had found it challenging, but had taken his time and worked through it. His lecturer Michael Morris said: “I’m extremely proud. He’s worked hard for this and he got what he deserves. He’s a top man.”

“I feel good, just very surprised to have won,” said Ethan after his victory, “but definitely very happy about it. Sam said: “It feels great to win – it’s been a good experience. The task is fairly hard but I managed to get it done in time.” Lecturer Scott Pearson said: “He’s done amazingly well. THE FINALISTS On the day of the final, the HIP team headed off to different corners of the UK to make sure the competition ran smoothly - and hand out those all-important prizes.

HIP: How did you find this year’s competition? Joseph: I was a bit short for time, but I tried my best. I was best at the straight bits! My 15mm bending was a lot better than my 22mm, which I struggled with. HIP: Has entering made you feel more confident?

JOSEPH PARKINSON UNIVERSITY ACADEMY HOLBEACH

Joseph: It helps a lot - when you go into someone’s house, you don’t need to look back on yourself too much, you know what you’ve done is good enough to leave. HIP: What made you choose plumbing?

Harry: It’s a great opportunity. It was challenging and a few bits were stressful, but that’s plumbing. I was best at the bending - in the company I work for, we try to pull bends as often as possible for a better flow rate and less leaks. During the regionals I was a bit concerned about the wiring as I’d never done it before, but learned how to wire in systems for the final! HIP: Has entering made you feel more confident? Harry: You begin to realise that what you’re doing and how you’re

e caught up with the runner-up Joseph Parkinson and thirdplaced Harry Pegler.

Joseph: My mum. I wanted to go into sport, but she said to do plumbing first so I have something to fall back on. Now, I don’t want to do sport - I much prefer plumbing. HIP: What would you like to achieve in your career? Joseph: I either want to be a property developer or have my own plumbing and heating company. HIP: Why should people enter the 2021 competition? Joseph: It builds your confidence and the amount of prizes you get from it is amazing.

doing it is right, and that you’re a good engineer in your field, which is always great to know. You gain the confidence to do the jobs you need to do. HIP: Why should people enter the 2021 competition? Harry: It’s such a great atmosphere, a great day. The regionals are amazing. It’s good for your confidence, good for your CV and good for you - not only for bragging rights but also the kit, the opportunity it gives and your confidence for the future, knowing you are good at what you do and are out there doing your best.

MEET THE WINNER Thomas J Thomas was announced as the winner of HIP Apprentice of the Year 2020 after a closelyfought final with Joseph and Harry. We caught up with him moments after he was announced as the winner.

HIP: Congratulations Thomas! How do you feel, having won the competition? Thomas: I’m really happy. I’ll go home and celebrate with a few beers! This will go on my CV and I can show people I’m keen to do the job and work to accurate measurements. HIP: What will you do with all the amazing prizes? Thomas: I have no idea - I saw all the prizes and thought, ‘wow’, it’s amazing that doing a competition like this can have so much of a payoff. HIP: How did you find the competition? Thomas: It was great. The final was definitely a step up from the regional competition, it was a challenge to get it done in time. Overall, it’s been brilliant. It was a shame not to get the ‘proper’ final but it was still a lot of fun, I really enjoyed it. I did quite well on the copper, which is a big portion of it. There’s a lot to get done in the time and a lot of accuracy involved.

THOMAS J THOMAS “The final was definitely a step up from the regional competition. Overall, it’s been brilliant!”

HIP: Has entering made you feel more confident? Thomas: It definitely increases your technical skills. You have to be as accurate as 2mm with your measurements in every part of it. It gives you that focus of being accurate to a point of complete precision. You have to be confident in what you do and not second-guess and slow yourself down. HIP: What made you choose plumbing? Thomas: When I left school I knew I didn’t want to work in an office as I’m quite practical. My family suggested plumbing - as soon as I left school I went straight into working for a firm and haven’t looked back since. HIP: Why should people enter the 2021 competition? Thomas: You should 100% do it - it’s worth giving a go, even if you don’t get through

the regionals, it’s still an amazing thing to say you’ve done. It’s an amazing thing to put on your CV. It also helps with the tasks you have to do in college - if you can do it in a competition with pressure, it’s no problem in college. It also shows employers you have the know-how and are interested in doing plumbing. Thomas’ lecturer Chris Walling said he’d ‘happily have Thomas working in his house’. He said: “He can do anything he wants - he’s got the practical skills, quality of the work, he’s very studious. Best of luck to him, I’m sure he’ll be brilliant at whatever he does. I’m made up for him and made up for the college. We’ve entered every single year and have come close previously, but I’m made up to finally have a winner!”

HEAT FREE JOINTING

Heat free jointing methods are becoming more and more popular amongst installers and this trend is set to continue. At Pegler, we recognise that the restrictions of naked flames on site and difficulties in acquiring hot work permits add unnecessary stress and obstacles. This is why we offer heat free jointing methods through our press-fit and push-fit technology ranges.

S

ince its inception in the late 1950’s, press-fit technology has been a high quality and efficient solution used across a multitude of projects. Push-fit technology was introduced more recently in the 1980’s, offering fittings which are compatible with multiple pipe materials. This makes it ideal for diverse applications such as domestic maintenance and refurbishment, new build and large-scale public sector projects.

KEY FEATURES 1. Cleaner than traditional methods 2. Faster (less time to flush system) 3. No carbon deposits 4. Less corrosion

SANIFLOOR & KINEDO EDEN SHOWER CUBICLE Saniflo’s Kinedo Eden shower cubicle is ideal for an uneven surface, so was the perfect choice for an installation at Uttoxeter Cricket Club in Staffordshire. We caught up with the Saniflo team to see how the install went.

While the cubicle was perfect for the space available, there was insufficient gravity drainage to take the waste water from the shower. By tapping into the soil stack in the WC via a Sanifloor 3 shower pump, a straightforward solution to discharge the water was found.

HOT TIP WHEN GRAVITY DRAINAGE IS NOT AN OPTION, A RANGE OF SANIFLO SHOWER PUMPS TO SUIT ALL SHOWER SCENARIOS CAN BE SPECIFIED.

02

> STEP ONE

> STEP TWO

Hot and cold water pipes were fed into the ceiling and connected to the water source. Isolation valves were added for quick and easy ability to stop the water flow if required.

Skirting board was removed to accommodate the shower tray. The location of the waste from the tray was marked on the wall and a hole drilled through to the WC.

05

> STEP THREE

> STEP FOUR

> STEP FIVE

Tray feet were adjusted to level the tray once positioned and the Sanifloor gully pipework installed on to the tray and fed though the wall.

32mm pipework was fitted in place to take the used grey water from the shower, via the pump, up the pipe for a metre or so and horizontally along to the soil stack.

The Sanifloor 3 shower pump was then connected to the discharge pipework coming from the tray.

> STEP SIX

> STEP SEVEN

> STEP EIGHT

The shower face was connected to an internal panel and the two internal glass panels then slotted into place over the grooves in the shower tray to ensure all water is directed inside when the shower is in use.

The external panels and door were then installed.

The Sanifloor 3 was plugged into an extension lead for testing and the shower turned on to ensure the automatic sensor in the gully activates the pump when water is present.

FINISHED LOOK

09 > STEP NINE After testing, the Sanifloor 3 was connected to the electrics and all finishing touches were made to the cubicle.

“In just half a day the whole solution was up and running and the first shower ready to be taken

The beauty of a cubicle is that no tanking is required (unlike enclosures and tiles) because the internal glass panels and tray work together to create a completely watertight environment. No tiling and grout is required which means installation is very quick and the shower is immediately available for use once in place. No follow up visits are required. PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT

Dickie Dyer’s BURN BARRIER Dickie Dyer reckons its Burn Barrier is tough. Former HIP Apprentice of the Year winner Tony Iacovazzo and Alexx Weller, Director of Cardiff Heating and Plumbing South Wales Ltd, put it to the test.

THE PRODUCT One of Dickie Dyer’s bestsellers, the Burn Barrier comes in two sizes - Tony tested the 290 x 275mm mat (RRP £37.03), while Alexx had a look at the 290 x 200mm version (RRP £24.85).

“It's really good quality and I'm really impressed with it” > ALEXX WELLER First impressions are really good. It feels thick and tough, but still flexible. It has multiple layers to withstand high temperatures, but they do advise not to put a flame on the back as it will melt. It served its purpose, it was thin enough to put behind pipework - I balanced it on some pipe clips so it wouldn't fall over. It is insulated enough to have no impact from heat on the back of the mat or wall. It's really good quality and I'm really impressed with it. It's also good value for money, coming in at under £25, so it’s affordable.

Alexx's verdict

> TONY IACOVAZZO It comes with a waterproof backing, which I think is good. When you’re soldering a pipe with water in it, this stops it getting saturated. It’s also got good sturdy seams around the edge to stop it falling apart. Other burn barriers I’ve used start to come apart and get in the way, but that won’t happen here. The only issue I’ve had is that the different layers do separate and tend to hug the pipe if it’s in a tight position. When it hugs, it encourages solder to pool and makes a bit of a mess. Overall, I’d say it’s a really good product – definitely worth going for.

This testo smart probe kit covers applications for differential temperature measurement using two Bluetooth pipeclamp thermometers. Also supplied in the kit is a Bluetooth manometer for gas pressure and differential pressure measurement.

Using the two testo 115i Bluetooth clamp thermometers allows engineers to quickly display flow/ return temperature values. The app automatically calculates the difference value for you.

28

Using the testo 510i Bluetooth manometer enables the user to check gas pressure and perform a tightness test. The smart probes simply connect to your smartphone or tablet and enable a clear display of measurement values in several forms (numerical, trending, raw data).

Depending on the smartphone or tablet being used you can connect six testo smart probes in total, so it’s easy to get multiple measurements displayed. Here we can see gas pressure and the flow/ return temperatures at the same time.

H IP I AUTUMN 2 0 2 0 I S M AR T PRO B E S

A key feature of testo smart probes is the ability to use the report option within the app to document measurement values and then send copies of reports via email from your smartphone or tablet.

Radiator balancing is made simple by using the testo Smart Probes, with the convenience of not having wires from traditional digital thermometers to break or trip over. The app can document the readings to help validate your installation work to your customer.

Another option for using the testo 510i manometer is to use it for measuring gas pressure on the boiler to help diagnose burner issues. You can also use it for measurement on fan pressure switches and other differential pressure measurement applications.

Although not part of this kit, testo can also supply a noncontact IR thermometer, the testo 805i, to also allow simple and fast surface temperature measurement.

THREAD SEALANT NOW WRAS-APPROVED FOR POTABLE WATER!

Yeah, no wonder!

My plumber’s still not using LOCTITE 55

LOCTITE® 5400 thread sealant is now a must-have part of your toolkit. Part of Henkel’s Health and Safety range, this general-purpose metal pipe sealant is hazard-label free.

W

RAS-approved for use with potable water up to 85°C and the ideal choice when the joint needs to be sealed and locked against vibrational self-loosening. > HOW IT WORKS

The fast, easy and secure pipe-sealing cord LOCTITE 55 for threaded fittings is fast, clean and easy to use. You can even re-align or back off a joint up to 45° and guarantee a 100% seal. It complies with all the latest hot and cold water, potable water, gas, compressed air and LPG (gaseous) regulations. Join the 1000’s of plumbers who have already switched from using tape, hemp and pastes. >> For more information visit: www.loctite55.co.uk

Now 160m. Test it. Benefit.

The sealant relies on the absence of air and contact with metal to make it cure. When applied to a taper parallel thread and wrenched tight, the adhesive provides an instant seal. So, if needed, the system can be pressurised straight away. It also protects the mated threaded areas against corrosion and the seal can be released at any time using compliant practices.

DESIGNER RADIATORS

Gone are the days when there was only one style of radiator to share heat in a home. The choice of radiators these days is huge, so it’s vital that you think carefully about which ones to select for each job.

HOT TIP LOW SURFACE TEMPERATURE RADIATORS ARE IDEAL FOR CARE HOMES, SCHOOLS & NURSERIES

N

owadays the bestselling radiators are the standard steel panel radiators, although they are far better looking and better quality than they were 20 years ago. But there are a wide range of decorative and designer radiators available now as well. Vertical radiators are very much in vogue and there are a number of special application radiators available, including low surface temperature radiators where the casings never heat up beyond a safe 43ºC – ideal for nursing and care homes and sheltered housing developments, as well as schools and nurseries.

There are extra protection versions of radiators to withstand constant or high levels of damp and condensation – in wet rooms and changing rooms for example. And there are extra robust, heavy duty radiators designed to withstand knocks and poor treatment – originally designed for sorting offices and industrial environments but now popular in a wider range of end uses including schools!

> SPECIALIST RADIATORS Specialist bathroom and kitchen towel rails and radiators are hugely popular and range from simple towel rails to the most extravagant designs. Chrome plated ladder rails are still available but have reduced in popularity as the choice of alternatives has grown. PIPE DREAMS

More and more homes – especially new-builds – rely on plastic plumbing systems. Adam Pearson, Product Manager at Polypipe Building Products, tells us why plastic is the right choice for a self-build project.

T

he majority of modern homes rely on plastic plumbing systems, rather than legacy materials. In almost all plumbing projects, plastic pipes and fittings are instrumental to a properly functioning water system. Many leading manufacturers are committed to using plastic due to its many benefits and versatility. Plastic systems are ideal for most domestic hot and cold water plumbing and heating installations, offering exceptional durability and longterm performance. > LIGHTWEIGHT SYSTEMS

Plastic plumbing and heating pipe coils are typically light in weight compared to alternative systems, while their flexibility makes them much easier and quicker to install. As an added bonus, manufacturers like Polypipe offer pipes that are flexible enough to be plumbed straight, in longer runs, without needing to wrangle with a pipe that attempts to return to its original coil shape during installation.

To claim your free sample of PolyMax register at www.polypipe.com/maxsample

The pipe’s natural flexibility means it can be bent easily to avoid obstacles and fit even the most awkward of positions, and is especially useful for a new bathroom fit-out or extension. There is a growing range of fittings available from the major manufacturers in the sector, ensuring a solution to any challenge can be found on the shelves of respected plumbers and builders’ merchants. > POLYMAX PUSH-FIT One of these fittings is the Polypipe PolyMax, a push-fit fitting offering maximum reliability and minimum fuss. The fittings are locked into place with a collet locking clip incorporating stainless steel teeth as part of a leak-proof, reliable system, but can be released using a specially designed release tool if the system needs to be changed.

By using advanced plastic plumbing systems that are designed for ease of use, whatever the skill of the installer, the quality of the final system does not need to be compromised.

This makes it an ideal system for plumbing apprentices and more experienced hands alike, especially in the tight spaces that are common with bathroom projects. There has also been great investment and progress made in plumbing system components with a simple ‘fit and forget’ ethos central to many advances in the marketplace. Polypipe also offer a variety of domestic waste traps and soil ranges to enable simple fitting and compatibility with plastic systems.

?

DID YOU KNOW? PLASTIC PLUMBING SYSTEMS OFFER LOW NOISE TRANSMISSION AND LOW WATER HAMMER EFFECT, PROVIDING HOMES WITH A QUIET AND EFFICIENT SYSTEM.

SMART

SECURITY

Homeowners are increasingly investing in the latest security measures to ensure their homes remain safe in their absence. In the third part of this series, Natalie Bird, Category Manager at Graham Plumbers’ Merchant, looks at how installing Google Nest’s indoor and outdoor security cameras can benefit customers.

A

ccording to the Home Office’s report, the average UK burglary costs a combined £3,030 in possessions, emotional trauma and lost productivity, with the Office for National Statistics publishing that 42% of those burglaries take place while no-one is home. A survey of ex-thieves conducted by Co-op Home Insurance found that smart technology is the biggest deterrent from burglary, with 89% of respondents stating they would avoid targeting smart homes.

It’s important that tradespeople understand the range of smart security products they can offer to their customers to ensure they know what’s happening in their own homes no matter where they are. > INSTALLATION Installing a smart security camera network provides peace of mind as it allows users to remotely access live feeds and receive automated activity alerts when sensors detect motion or conspicuous sounds. The Google Nest indoor and outdoor security cameras, for example, enable 24/7 live 130º views in 1080p HD video even at night-time. Through the Nest app users can receive Activity Alerts with an image of what has happened

when the network detects sound or movement. With the talk and listen function, users can also respond through their home system to interact with visitors and even pets. An additional Nest Aware subscription lets users add further security measures including creating additional Activity Zones to detect motion surrounding important areas. With the more advanced Nest Cam IQ range, Supersight allows the camera to automatically zoom in and follow a person’s movements anywhere within its view. The intuitive Nest Cam IQ also comes with person alerts included as standard without the need for a Nest Aware subscription.

LOW MAINS WATER PRESSURE

SOLVED!

Here, Stuart Turner provides solutions to low mains water pressure.

U

nvented systems rely on the mains water supply to directly feed the combi boiler or pressurised hot water cylinder. Water is then heated and circulated around the home. Unfortunately, poor incoming mains water pressure can result in a first-floor bathroom being unable to provide a decently powered shower.

For more info, please visit: www.stuart-turner.co.uk

Stuart Turner #POWERINGWATER

> THE SOLUTION Stuart Turner’s solution is their WRAS-approved Mainsboost™ system. There are three products to choose from (displayed below), which can fit neatly within a kitchen cupboard:

“A Mainsboost™ system allows homeowners to run multiple appliances without a reduction in water pressure and flow”

1

2

3 > MAINSBOOST ™

> MAINSBOOST ™ FLOMATE

> MAINSBOOST ™ IBOOST

For smaller properties, designed to boost incoming water pressure by an additional 1.5 bar and ensures flow does not exceed the 12 ltr/min UK water regulation limits. Available in a variety of sizes.

Designed as a fully integrated system and combines a 200 litre storage tank with a high performing multistage pump. iBoost units are available in either fixed or variable speed controls, typically operating at 60 ltrs/min at 3.0 bar pressure.

46

H IP I AUTUMN 2 0 2 0 I LOW M AIN S WAT E R PRE S SU RE

For larger properties with more occupants, where demand for simultaneous delivery of large volumes of water may be higher. Sizes range from 100 to 1000 litres and can provide flow rates of up to 80 ltrs/min. Where water supply has a pressure of at least 2.0 bar but poor flow, the Mainsboost™ system will boost water performance throughout the property allowing unvented systems to work at their optimum.

PLUMBER PROFILE: JAMES ANDERSON

Ever wondered what it’s like to go viral on Twitter? James Anderson made national headlines thanks to a tweet praising his work. He’s since raised thousands to provide free plumbing services to elderly and disabled people. HIP Magazine: How did you get into plumbing? James Anderson: I started plumbing around 19 years ago when I was made redundant in my previous job. HIP: What is the best thing about the plumbing industry? JA: You can meet many different people from every background and no two jobs are the same. It gives you a sense of satisfaction when you make that big impact on people and their lives. HIP: What first inspired you to set up your non-profit company DEPHER?

HIP: What’s the most rewarding thing about what you do? JA: The most rewarding thing is the smile and happiness when you leave the property, knowing that they are not just safe and warm but protected from rogue traders and scammers because they become part of our DEPHER family.

JA: I felt humbled and astonished when the tweet went viral. I did not expect this at all, I’m glad it has though because we have now helped hundreds more and inspired others to do the same. HIP: How are you encouraging plumbers to join DEPHER? JA: I hope a lot do join DEPHER. We have sent information packs to many plumbing and heating companies that have joined the DEPHER initiative to provide this service in their areas. HIP: Can young plumbers and apprentices join DEPHER? JA: My ambition is to start a DEPHER Community Programme for school leavers who can train as tradespeople while learning the principles of DEPHER. This will not only help with their career, it will also improve the respect in their community for everyone. HIP: Do you employ any apprentices?

HIP: What’s the next step for DEPHER? JA: The next step for DEPHER is to become a national player in the industry and to champion the community and the vulnerable that are left behind. Building trust with the public is massively important to us. HIP: What one piece of advice would you give to those just starting out in the industry? JA: It is the quality of your behaviour and your service that is most important to a customer. Cost does play a big part but a customer would rather have a person, not a robot, and a company that is available at any time. Trust, honesty and transparency are what people are looking for.

@depheruk

JA: I was inspired to establish DEPHER because an elderly and bedbound gent was scammed out of £170 and nearly a further £5,500 for work he did not need doing. This made me think of all the elderly and disabled people in the UK and what could happen to them.

HIP: How did you feel when the tweet praising your work went viral?

JA: We take day learners from Lancashire County Council and will be pushing for funding to enable us to create apprenticeships. Here's the invoice which went viral on Twitter

THINKING OF BECOMING

A HEAT PUMP

INSTALLER? Good choice! There were about 22,000 heat pumps installed in the UK in 2017 (Source: BSRIA), an 18% increase from the previous year – yet currently, there are only around 600 MCS-registered heat pump installers. So, the demand for heat pump installers is huge!

C

heck out the four key differences between a boiler installer and a heat pump installer:

“Demand for heat pump installers is huge!”

> 1 CERTIFICATION It’s desirable, and sometimes essential, for heat pump installers to be qualified with the MCS quality assurance scheme, proving competence. MCS is also required for Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) benefit. Split air source heat pumps (rather than monoblocs) require F-Gas certification, unless subcontracted out, because outdoor and indoor units are connected with refrigerant pipework. > 2 INITIAL ASSESSMENT Providing an estimate can take just 10 minutes but does require consideration of suitability. Existing radiators need checking as HP’s operate at lower flow temperature; heat pump sizing based on heat loss and not hot water demand; space for a cylinder or buffer; and suitability for a low-temperature system, remembering the boiler can be kept as back-up. If output is 11 kW or more, it may need three-phase power, which could make installation prohibitively expensive.

52

> 3 HEAT LOSS CALCULATION Online tools can help with heat loss calculations of all rooms, windows and insulation, and considerations for heat emitters, making it possible to offer an estimate to the customer of running costs and RHI payments. > 4 THE INSTALLATION Fitting pipes, valves and electrical work is familiar to boiler installers, though internal pipework will usually need to be larger. Hydraulic balancing is recommended so the system runs at the correct operating temperature. There are a few differences, such as bigger radiators or underfloor heating for lower flow temperatures. Weather compensating controls are mandatory in MCS-approved work and noise levels must be assessed to ensure the heat pump

isn’t causing disturbance to the householder or neighbours. Installing a heat pump system (apart from replacing any radiators) can be done in just one day.

For T&Cs head to our website.

APRIL WINNER

AUGUST WINNER

HARRY PEGLER, SGS COLLEGE / COTSWOLD FLAME

JAYDEN ROSE, CHOICE TRAINING / PIMLICO PLUMBERS

Harry was our final winner of the award in the previous format. Harry, who won an Amazon Echo Dot and a Yonos PICO from award sponsor Wilo, says he has been helping his dad - a heating engineer - with bits of work since he was seven!

Due to the lockdown we rolled over the first ‘new’ award from May to August. Jayden won the award, which saw hundreds of votes cast for each of the six entrants, with an image showing an unvented hot water cylinder and pipework install.

He said: “I tried plumbing and took to it. I enjoy the challenge and how it constantly keeps you thinking. There are also lots of routes for progression.”

He said: “It feels good that people recognise my hard work and pride in plumbing.” Jayden won a slimline towel rail from sponsor Stelrad.
