INDUSTRY NEWS READ THE FULL STORY IN THE NEWS SECTION OF

HIP-MAGAZINE.CO.UK ARE YOU AWARE OF THE NEW MINIMUM WAGE FOR APPRENTICES? The National Minimum Wage and National Living Wages increased on 1st April. Apprentices are entitled to the apprentice rate of the National Minimum Wage if they are either under 19, or 19 or over and in the first year of their apprenticeship. Apprentices over 19 who have completed the first year of their apprenticeship are entitled to the National Minimum Wage for their age. As of 1st April, the minimum apprentice hourly wage went up from £3.70 to £3.90. For 18 to 20-year-olds, the minimum is £6.15, £7.70 for 21 to 24-year-olds and £8.21 for 25-year-olds and over. The wages go up each year with a view to keeping pay proportionate to inflation.

MORE SMART METER OWNERS REPORT HIGHER BILLS THAN SAVINGS Having a smart meter installed at home doesn’t mean lower energy bills, according to a new survey. In the ECA’s recent YouGov survey of adults who are eligible for a smart meter, just one in 14 respondents with a smart meter (7%) said that having one had reduced their energy bills, while one in 11 (9%) said they had increased. This is despite one in four (23%) reporting that the main reason for having one installed was to reduce their energy bills. ECA Energy Advisor Luke Osborne said: “These ECA findings suggest that smart meter users seldom report lower energy bills – which seems at odds with the Government’s ‘save money’ message.”

SURVEY SHOWS TRADESPEOPLE PREFER BUYING IN MERCHANTS THAN ONLINE Despite the general increase in online sales, recent research has highlighted that tradespeople still prefer more traditional methods of buying equipment. Research by in-vehicle secure storage brand Van Vault covered a number of trades, including builders, electricians, plumbers and carpenters. It showed that when buying secure storage solutions for their van, the preferred choice is to purchase in-store. According to latest figures from the Office for National Statistics, online sales in February were up 9.4% yearon-year, currently running at 17.6% (worth £1.19 billion). Despite this, the study of 300 tradespeople revealed that merchants are going against the current retail grain, with stores being the first choice, rather than online.

CIPHE CONCERNED AS APPRENTICESHIPS START TO DROP

CCC CALLS FOR BAN ON GAS BOILERS IN HOMES BY 2025

The chief executive of the CIPHE believes the Apprenticeship Levy aimed at boosting apprentice numbers has had a negative impact.

Industry bodies have been reacting to the Committee for Climate Change’s (CCC) recommendation that gas boiler installations should be outlawed in new homes by 2025.

Apprenticeship starts are down by 26% following the introduction of the Levy in 2017 – despite the Government targeting three million apprenticeship starts by 2020.

The ‘UK housing: Fit for the future?’ report says the UK’s legally-binding climate change targets will not be met without the near-complete elimination of greenhouse gas emissions from UK buildings.

All businesses with a payroll over £3m per annum have to pay 0.5% of their wage bill towards funding apprenticeships, whilst those below pay 5% of training costs.

The Heat Pump Association believes that it is vital that key people in industry are aware of the potential of heat pumps for low carbon heating.

Kevin Wellman, CEO of CIPHE, said: “The Levy was meant to reform the system and in many ways it has – but for the worse. Some regard the Levy as little more than an additional tax on wages, with many failing to claim back the money they have put in.”

However, the Association of Plumbing & Heating Contractors (APHC) says this will put extra strain on the electricity network. Paul Blacklock, Head of Corporate Affairs at Calor, said: “Some recommendations indicate a lack of understanding and vision about alternative low carbon solutions which could be used.”

1 OF 3 SPORTS BAGS FROM VIESSMANN > THE NEXT GENERATION OF WALL MOUNTED GAS BOILERS The MatriX-Plus burner is highly efficient and at the heart of the new Vitodens 2xx series (200-W/222-F/242-F) of gas boilers. It is durable and efficient thanks to the highest quality stainless steel Inox-Radial heat exchanger and emits 40% lower NOx emissions for environmentally responsible operation. The Lambda Pro Plus sensor ensures the Vitodens 2xx series can achieve a 1:17 modulation level with the highest flame stability for notably reduced fuel consumption. It also maintains consistently clean and efficient combustion through automatic matching of gas types and the flue system, where the boiler continually adjusts fan speed to match flame height due to variations in the gas being supplied. The boiler range is extremely convenient to operate, using a new 7" colour touchscreen. The control includes an 'energy cockpit', which is a dashboard overview of all the important data to visualise energy generation and consumption. The introduction of an integral WiFi interface inside the boiler as standard simplifies connectivity to the ViCare app without the need for the additional Vitoconnect plug-in box. Viessmann’s new boilers and fuel-cell micro combined heat and power unit will be on stand C10 at Installer 2019, Ricoh Arena, Coventry on 7th to 9th May.

PLUMBER PROFILE: BECKY BATES

HIP Magazine: Hi Becky, it’s great to speak to you! So, why plumbing? Becky Bates: Plumbing wasn’t something I’d even contemplated in the past but when I saw an advert in the paper something just clicked. I was drawn to the possibility of running my own business and learning a skill. I remember my grandad saying, “People will always need a reliable plumber, Becky”. Then once I started my training, I immediately felt like I’d found my calling. HIP: What advice would you give to someone who is about to qualify? BB: Work with someone who’s been in the trade for a while to gain knowledge and experience, even if it means giving your time for free. That hands-on experience outside of the classroom is priceless. And it’s not just about learning the on-site skills but also how to run a business. And more importantly, stick at it! You will get knock backs and you will have bad days. But it’s worth it. HIP: It’s great to see more women taking up plumbing! What would you say to younger girls who want to get into the trade? BB: Don’t be put off by the stereotypes. Know that by becoming a plumber or gas engineer you will be stepping into an industry which is highly skilled, full of innovation and ever changing, which makes it exciting.

HIP: How has social media helped you and your business? BB: When you’re self-employed you can feel quite lonely. Like any job it comes with its challenges. It’s made me feel part of a community. I know if I am experiencing any technical, business or emotional difficulties, there is a community of fantastic like-minded folk who are more than willing to help. It has also helped with showcasing my work and opened up job opportunities. HIP: Why is it important to you to work with top brands? BB: Viva Sanitary and Wilo are brands which I use and trust, so when the opportunity came up to work with them, I jumped at the chance. I think it’s important for women to be included in product campaigns & advertising within the industry. These companies are strong advocates for women in the trades and I am proud to represent them. HIP: What are your passions outside of work? BB: I love being outdoors, hiking with my fiancée is my absolute favourite. I also enjoy running and yoga. I love going to see live music, as often as my bank balance will allow! HIP: How would you describe yourself in three words? BB: Silly, creative and passionate.

MEET THE 2019

WINNER

LEWIS BLAKELY After seven heats, a two-day final and a lot of incredible plumbing, the competition is finally over. Lewis Blakely, 19, is a third-year apprentice at Coleg y Cymoedd, and he came out top at the Grand Final! We spoke to Lewis moments after he was announced as the winner. HIP: What advice would you give to those entering next year?

“I’m speechless! I never thought I could win”

Lewis: Believe in yourself! Focus, take your time – there’s a lot of bends and measurements. That’s what has won it for me, taking a step back, looking at it, getting my levels right and double checking my measurements before I soldered.

WINNER HIP Magazine: Congratulations Lewis! How do you feel? Lewis Blakely: I’m speechless! I never thought I could win the competition. All the other competitors were absolutely unbelievable and I’m overwhelmed. I don’t know what to say! HIP: What’s your favourite thing about your job? Lewis: Probably presentation, I like to keep things nice and neat. I also really like soldering. HIP: …and your least favourite thing? Lewis: Water! When water is in the pipe, it’s a nightmare, you can’t solder or anything and it delays the job. HIP: How did you cope with the task? Lewis: It was tiring. It’s good because it tests your ability but it was very hard. It was a big step up from the regional heat.

HIP: What are your plans for the future? Lewis: Work hard, keep looking through the books, do well in college and try to pass my gas qualification. I want to have my own company in the future. If I could do it in the next five years, that’d be great! HIP: Has taking part in the competition changed how you feel about your abilities? Lewis: Definitely. I won the Welsh heat, but I was nervous about coming here because it’s the best people in the UK. I’ve been stressed over the last two days but I think I’ve done a pretty good job.

QUICKFIRE QUESTIONS HIP: What’s your favourite prize? Lewis: Am I allowed to say the cheque? HIP: What’s your go-to brand for tools? LB: DeWalt HIP: If we gave you £1,000 in cash, what would you do with it? LB: Pay my bills! HIP: Favourite social media platform? LB: Facebook

MEET THE

2019

RUNNER-UP Leonard Keown, Level 3 at South West College and Northern Ireland regional winner, was the runner-up at this year’s competition. Here's what he had to say. HIP Magazine: What’s your favourite thing about the plumbing industry?

HIP: Where do you see yourself in five years?

Leonard Keown: You can do a qualification and gather the skill set and then move out on your own and be your own boss.

Leonard: Hopefully working for myself, maybe with 20 or 30 people working for me. I’d still want to be working in industrial.

HIP: Why did you decide that plumbing was for you?

HIP: Has taking part in the HIP competition changed how you feel about your abilities?

Leonard: My brother was a plumber. I left school not knowing what to do and I have a fairly good set of hands. So I went and worked where my brother worked the summer after GCSEs, and now I’m about to qualify!

Leonard: I was already quite confident, I’ve been in a couple of competitions before. Once you get a bit of age, get a few years into the course, you go into a competition focused and it’s a wee bit easier.

THINK THIS COULD BE YOU NEXT YEAR?

HIP: How did you get into plumbing?

HIP: Where do you see yourself in five years?

HIP: What’s your favourite thing about plumbing?

Isabella: I did quite a lot of things before. I used to look after horses, I’ve been a full-time carer for my gran and also a youth support worker. Then my uncle asked me if I’d like to help with some plumbing work, so I thought I’d give it a go and ended up loving it!

Eddie: I would like to have my own company eventually and hopefully a few people working for me instead of working for someone else.

Ben: The satisfaction after finishing a job, when you take a step back and it looks quality.

HIP: Has taking part in the HIP Apprentice competition made you more confident in your abilities? Isabella: Yeah. It was seriously tough, all the pipework we had to do. But I managed to get it all done so that’s all I can really do!

HIP: Has taking part in the HIP Apprentice competition made you more confident in your abilities? Eddie: I feel tons better. When I went back to work after winning the regional, my boss was like, “Well you can do this now, you can do that”, like putting boilers on and stuff.

Well done to all our finalists! 14

THE KEYH LE Tameside College’s construction department offers a wide range of courses at all levels across construction including brickwork, ground craft operations, carpentry & joinery, electrical installations, fitted interiors, painting & decorating and plumbing & heating. The plumbing department offers courses ranging from Level 1 to 3 for full time students and Level 2 and 3 for work-based learning. The department will also offer the new plumbing standard from September 2019, which is a Level 3 qualification for apprentices that replaces the Level 2 and 3 NVQ diplomas currently available. The plumbing team consists of six members of staff who cover all courses. Every student receives up-to-date industry standard training. During the full-time course, the construction department hosts an

annual ‘Pathway to Construction’ day, which consists of an internal competition, with students competing from all areas for various prizes. During this day, all employers associated with the college’s various departments attend the event, take part in judging, have a look around and speak to the students and staff. Tameside’s construction department has a partnership with the Cross Construction Apprenticeship Taskforce, who support the event and fund placements and apprenticeships directly from the ‘Pathway to Construction’ day.

This has led to a very successful conversion rate from full time learners to apprenticeships. This all adds to the excitement of studying at Tameside College and in 2021 the students will be studying in a £9 million purposemade, state-of-the-art Construction Skills Centre.

“In 2021 the students will be studying in a £9 million purpose-made, state-of-the-art Construction Skills Centre” Each course level has its own workshop, with bays for all students and a bespoke assessment area for all practical tasks and renewable technologies. Further additions such as ACS, water regulations and unvented hot water courses are also on offer. In addition to these, each class has a ‘virtual classroom’ online, where all content for the technical side of the course and the learning journey is located.

The virtual classroom has had a major impact on the ‘pass first time’ approach to the technical side of the qualifications, as well as aiding and reinforcing the practical elements of the courses on offer.

The first module focuses on Wiser, providing installers with everything they need for installation and setup. Installers must then pass a multiple-choice test before becoming Wiser Approved. Clare Stevens, Trade Marketing Manager at Drayton, said: “Our training roadshow was created to ensure that we provide as much support as possible to installers as they venture into the new market of

connected homes and smart controls, as well as educating them about the benefits of the Wiser heating system. “However, we realise that not everybody will be able to attend the training tour, so we wanted to find a way that installers can learn more about Wiser at a convenient time. 9º Know How has been designed so heating engineers can access our materials any time, in an easy-tofollow format. Homeowners will be reassured that only heating engineers demonstrating a good understanding of the Wiser system will feature on the consumer website.”

TRAINING:

A ROUTE TO HIGHER STANDARDS, SAFE INSTALLATIONS AND REPEAT BUSINESS

In the face of ever-changing standards in the plumbing and heating sector, training has never had a more important role. Altecnic explains the importance of keeping up with training as you move forward in your career. Every time the government implements new building regulations, there is an impact on the corresponding energy and water regulations. At the same time, reputable manufacturers are developing new technologies so that installers can provide quality, costeffective solutions that meet – and often exceed – industry standards. > WHY TRAINING? Using products that comply with recognised quality standards is the best way to ensure installations are safe and effective. It is therefore vital that everyone, from students and apprentices starting out, to experienced professionals of many years’ standing, educates themselves and keeps up to speed with industry developments.

HOT TIP A ‘RIGHT FIRST TIME’ APPROACH DRIVES REPEAT BUSINESS Training is essential to achieve compliance but creates its own demands. Even when no financial investment is involved, there is a time commitment. However, by training to improve their ability to solve problems, installers can build customer confidence. > MANUFACTURER SUPPORT A wealth of information, advice and training is available from organisations such as CIPHE, the Bathroom Manufacturers’ Association and APHC. Reputable manufacturers also take their

responsibilities to the industry seriously and in promoting best practice are an invaluable resource to installers throughout their careers. Altecnic, which specialises in hydronic solutions, not only gives installers access to technical support via the telephone and its website, but also offers product training courses and a library of CIBSE-accredited CPD materials that addresses topics such as backflow prevention, system balancing, heat networks and thermostatic mixing valves. Adopting a ‘right first time’ approach not only saves plumbers and heating engineers money in the long run, but also drives repeat business from satisfied customers, whilst recommendations open the door to new opportunities. An investment in training helps installers to achieve best practice and keeps them one step ahead of the competition.

PRACTICAL

MINDED For tradespeople at the start of their career, one of the biggest obstacles to progression can be gaining the necessary practical experience on new products that have either not been taught in college or are new to the market.

Manufacturers such as Polypipe are looking to provide alternative options for young tradespeople, with the introduction of Professional Development Centres (PDC) that give training and practical experience in a controlled setting.

www.polypipe.com/housing/blog/ bpec-accredited-polypipe-training

> PROFESSIONAL INSTALLERS At Polypipe’s PDC in Doncaster, the company has teamed up with national construction qualification provider BPEC as part of establishing the centre as a place for young professional installers to increase their skill set. BPEC works closely with a UK network of colleges, private training centres and industry stakeholders, including Polypipe. Being BPEC–accredited ensures that installers keep up to date on the industry’s technological advances and regulatory requirements, adapting their skills to meet the changing needs of the plumbing and heating industry. With increasing consumer interest in underfloor heating systems, Polypipe and BPEC offer an accredited course for the installation of warm water underfloor heating systems, ideal for newcomers to the sector.

Andrew Coy, commercial proposition director for Polypipe Underfloor Heating, said:

“The PDC also helps Polypipe to tackle the skills gap head on, by working with schools and colleges to help train the plumbers of the future, and continue to serve the national workforce by developing new talent.”

Polypipe is not only aiming to improve the expertise of established professionals, but to invest in the future of the industry by introducing young people to the benefits of pursuing a career in plumbing.

> DRILL DRIVER

> OSCILLATING MULTI-CUTTER

This is specialised for screwdriving, but is also used to drill in wood. It applies rotational shocks, ideal for removing stubborn screws, and for driving screws through hard wood. It’s great in cramped spaces and easy to hold, with no danger of kickbacks. Use a combi or drill driver instead for: larger drilling diameters; harder materials; driving long, thin screws into timber; and precise setting of screw tightness.

Great for drilling into wood and screwdriving too. A normal drill driver is like a combi without an impact drill function – but choose one with the FlexiClick attachment system and you’ll have a do-it-all tool! Quick-change adaptors turn it into a drill, an SDS-plus rotary hammer or a versatile screwdriver that reaches close to edges and around corners.

Its side-to-side motion allows accurate, highly controlled cutting, grinding, scraping and sanding – often in confined spaces where a rotating tool can’t reach. Go for one with the Starlock system, which gives easier, firmer blade attachment, better performance and a wider range of accessories and applications.

THE IMPORTANCE OF

FLUSHING & DISINFECTING

BY SAN

Colin Bland, Northern Regional Sales Manager for Saniflo, says there are good reasons for rules and regulations on flushing and chlorination of shower fixtures and fittings. The main reasons are for the general health of the public, but there is also an obligation to ensure that performance of fixtures such as taps, showers and appliances is adequate.

The current standards state ‘there should be no deterioration of water quality’ in the installation and that the ‘required flow of water and pressure is available’ with water meeting the standards for ‘physical, chemical and microbiological quality’.

“No plumber wants to go back to the job they’ve just worked on, so flushing at the point of installation is sensible” “As a business we very much advocate following these guidelines,” says Colin. “Flushing is essential and our own technical team and engineers are fastidious when they install, demonstrate and train.

In a single domestic property every new water service, cistern, distributing pipe, hot water cylinder, or similar appliances must be thoroughly flushed with drinking water before use.

“All plumbers and installers have a responsibility to ensure they follow these regulations in the interest of public health and of course, for shower performance.

Where the piping system is not used immediately after commissioning, or regularly flushed, it must be disinfected before use in situations including:

“The last thing a plumber needs is to go back to the job they’ve just worked on, so carrying out flushing at the point of installation is eminently sensible.”

> New installations (except for private dwellings occupied by a single family) > Where major extensions or alterations have been carried out

SAFETY TIP

> Where underground pipework has been installed > Where contamination may have occurred including fouling by sewage, drainage, animals or entry by site personnel for interior inspection, painting or repairs > Where a system has not been in regular use and not been regularly flushed

BENEFITS TO INSTALLING A

CONCEALED SHOWER SYSTEM The demand for concealed products is continuing to grow. GROHE is here to explain why you should consider going concealed for your next bathroom.

The shower space looks set to transition from traditional exposed systems to more sleek and stylish concealed models where the mechanics are hidden behind the wall. As space is often precious in the bathroom, concealed shower valves are useful if there is limited space in the showering area.

> RAPIDO SMARTBOX GROHE’s Rapido Smartbox rough-in kit offers a universal solution thanks to its compatibility with over 170 different GROHE trim designs, offering you and your customers freedom of planning and efficient installation when working on projects. With three outlets operated via one roughin kit and one trim set, the Rapido Smartbox facilitates a wider range of showering options, for which previously two rough-ins would have been required. This simplifies the complexity of concealed showering, making it more accessible for both you and your customers.

“A concealed shower system allows you the freedom to create a truly bespoke shower space” For more information visit: www.grohe.co.uk or contact GROHE’s UK Training Manager, Chris Penney at Christopher.Penney@grohe.com

Here are three reasons to consider working with the Rapido Smartbox on your next project. > COMPATIBLE FOR ALL PROJECTS With products like the GROHE Rapido Smartbox, concealed showers can be installed into the narrowest spaces - as small as 75mm, so most projects can have a concealed system installed, usually without a false wall required! > SIMPLIFIED INSTALLATION All standard tubes can be connected to ½ inch outlets, making adapters dispensable. Inlets connect from below, allowing direct connection to the hot and cold water supply and no need for 90-degree fittings. Brass outlets allow connection to the pipes to be installed on-site with the use of a pipe wrench. Mounting is quick and easy and does not require a bench vice. > FLEXIBLE DESIGN Positioning of a shower valve in an exposed system is limited by shower hose length. However, a concealed shower system gives the freedom to create a truly bespoke shower space thanks to the concealed valve being able to be placed on an opposing wall away from the outlet.

WATER

AND WITH NEOPERL Kevin Gates, Managing Director for NEOPERL, explains the importance of responsible water usage.

Water is the oil of the 21st century. Drinking water is becoming increasingly scarce and therefore more valuable all over the world. Neoperl encourages responsible management of drinking water with its products that save both water and energy. Contrary to general opinion, it also makes sense to save water in

countries that are abounding with water: hot water offers the greatest saving potential, requiring a great deal of energy to heat it. Every saved litre of hot water therefore saves energy and reduces CO₂ emissions. In short, NEOPERL water savers maintain comfort while going easy on the environment.

REDUCING CO₂

“Every saved litre of hot water saves energy and reduces CO₂ emissions”

With NEOPERL products each person can save around ten to 15 litres of water per day, of which a considerable percentage is hot water. Producing less hot water saves energy and CO₂ emissions are reduced.

> POTENTIAL SAVINGS

> FLOW REGULATOR TECHNOLOGY

Basin: with a NEOPERL water saver use is reduced by up to 50%

Integrated flow regulators are at the heart of every water saver. They always maintain a virtually constant flow rate, irrespective of the prevailing line pressure. The amount of water used is as much as necessary, but as little as possible.

Shower: a NEOPERL shower water saver reduces use by up to 40% With NEOPERL products each person can save around 10-15 litres of water per day, of which a considerable percentage is hot water. Producing less hot water saves energy and CO2 emissions are reduced.

Each NEOPERL flow regulator comprises a body and a precision rubber o-ring. This o-ring changes shape as the pressure of the water flowing through it increases. The latest flow regulator generation (Dual-Core) consists of two o-rings, keeping the flow rate constant while creating an aerated stream even at low pressure. EASE AND STYLE WITH

SHOWERWALL

Wall panelling is a brilliant alternative to traditional tiles thanks to its easy, fast installation and low maintenance benefits to the customer. Here, Showerwall’s product manager Steph Harris outlines why bathroom panelling is great for installers to get to grips with.

?

DID YOU KNOW? > FAST AND EASY INSTALLATION Showerwall’s waterproof wall panelling system includes its Proclick range. Clever-click design technology simply locks the panels together without the need for any joining trims, creating near invisible joints. Since no grout is needed there’s minimal risk of mould, leaving them easy to maintain. Square cut panels are also available, which require trims. Using panels gives large, easy-to-clean areas of stylish, decorative surface. Proclick is available in 600mm and 1200mm x 2440mm, while standard square-cut panels come in 900mm and 1200mm x 2440mm. The 1200mm is especially popular because of its suitability for 1200mm shower trays. The panels are easy to transport, handle and cut. They can be installed in under a day with simple joinery tools, meaning installers can provide a total solution. Showerwall panels can also be placed over existing tiles, which can cut hours on a job.

40

SHOWERWALL PANELS CAN BE PLACED OVER EXISTING TILES

> SURESEAL SYSTEM All panels are installed with Showerwall’s Sureseal system to ensure a watertight finish at the base of the panel. The Sureseal base trim fits onto the shower tray and sealant is added, before sliding a Showerwall panel into place. This envelops the base of the panel to give a four-point seal before the cover trim is clipped on, providing a smooth finish. End caps are then pushed into place to protect the panel’s outer edge.

“Using Showerwall means that installers can provide a total solution”

COMPLIANCE IN

BATHROOM

When it comes to designing a new bathroom, the customer will naturally focus on the layout and look of the bathroom, rather than being concerned about safety and efficiency. WRAS tells us how to help customers make the best choices for a compliant bathroom, without compromising on design.

“As a plumber, it is crucial that you are fully up to speed with regulations”

Whilst the look and layout are important, as a qualified and competent plumber, you are the one with the responsibility to make homeowners aware of safety considerations and regulations that need to be complied with to ensure that the plumbing system installed remains safe and robust. The Water Regulations Advisory Scheme (WRAS) aims to raise awareness of the regulations, why they exist and how plumbers can ensure that all work is compliant with them.

the likelihood of the water supply being contaminated if, for example, a shower was installed next to the toilet. If a shower hose can reach the toilet, it does not comply with the regulations and poses a risk of water contamination. > THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX Where a design might allow a shower hose to reach into the toilet, you might look at changing the design or layout - possibly turning the bath

> BEWARE OF CONTAMINATION One of the largest risks in bathroom design, potentially resulting in a breach of regulations, is the risk of contamination of water within the plumbing system. For example, compact bathroom designs might be great for saving on available floor space, but it could increase

SAFETY TIP MAKE SURE THE SHOWER HOSE CAN’T REACH INTO THE TOILET TO AVOID WATER CONTAMINATION around so the taps are at the other end! Alternatively, you could use a shorter, flexible shower hose, or one that is permanently restrained, to prevent it reaching into the toilet. As a plumber, it is crucial that you are fully up to speed with regulations so that you can stay reliable, be safe and assist your customers in the design of a practical, attractive, but compliant bathroom. Kevin Johnson, MD of Monarch Water and Technical Director of the UK Water Treatment Association, tells us how to help customers protect their bathrooms with the next generation of water softeners. When it comes to fitting new bathrooms, little thought is given to water quality. However, with 60% of UK households situated in hard water areas, limescale is a serious issue that installers and customers need to consider. > WATER SOLUTIONS A new bathroom is a significant investment. It’s vital that installers offer a comprehensive service which protects their investment with sustainable water softening solutions. It’s not just the visible signs of limescale that you need to warn customers about, but the hidden damage it can cause to heating elements. Just 1.6mm of scale makes heating elements work 12% harder as they have to heat the scale before they can heat the water. This means they cost more to run and have a shorter life expectancy.

“Intelligent, free apps can turn your smartphone into one of your most important tools”

What was life like before the smartphone? Today there is an app for everything, except for work, isn’t that right? Wrong! Digitalisation has finally arrived in the trades.

Testo has heralded the era of smart measuring technology with modern, app-controlled measuring instruments, making your everyday work easier and more efficient. > INTELLIGENT APPS Intelligent, free apps can turn your smartphone into one of your most important tools. This fundamentally changes not only the measurements themselves, but also the documentation and processing of data. Previously, data from site visits had to be noted down by hand and offices were buried in paperwork. Now all measurement data can be conveniently transmitted to the app via Bluetooth, sent off directly on-site by email to the office or customer and then archived without paper. Working on complicated measuring points is also simple thanks to

HOT TIP SMART MEASURING TECHNOLOGY GIVES YOU A MORE PROFESSIONAL IMAGE Bluetooth data transfer. Just attach your measuring instruments and read the data on your smartphone up to 10m away from the measurement points. What’s more, Testo apps are simple and intuitive, with all your results at the touch of a finger. > SMART MEASURING Smart measuring technology gives you a much more professional image. You can compare readings using the graphic display options on

the smartphone and can present the results to your customer immediately in a simple, understandable way. All of this without additional accessories, special software for data readout or long waiting times. The fact that the data is digital and cannot be easily manipulated allows clients to trust in the site readings, against handwritten notes with analogue devices. Modern measuring technology has finally arrived in today’s smart and digitally-networked world and is making your smartphone just as indispensable at work as at home. Mobile use, intuitive operation and simple data transmission mean savings in both time and money, enabling you to impress your customers with lean processes and fast response times. MAKE THE RIGHT CHOICE: THE UNIFIED WATER LABEL The Unified Water Label (UWL) is increasingly visible on bathroom products, as it is currently used by over 155 brands and registered with more than 13,200 products across Europe. The UWL provides a clear and simple system to identify water saving products, which will deliver environmental and cost-saving benefits without any loss in performance for consumers. There has never been a better time to support this voluntary scheme as consumers are asked to think about how much water they use in the home while the Government sets ambitious targets to reduce water consumption. Registered products will display the label on product literature, installation guides or on the website. The Bathroom Manufacturers Association (BMA) has produced a number of videos to explain what the UWL means and help consumers to think about how they use water in their bathroom.

IN ASSOCIATION WITH

Whilst the vast majority of plumbers and heating installers do a great job, there are a few offenders out there who either don’t care or don’t know any better. We teamed up with our mate James from Plumberparts to showcase some of the biggest plumbing tragedies around.

TRAIL NEW COURSE STANDARDS The Plumbing and Heating course is changing, but never fear! Ian Hall, Head Lecturer in Plumbing and Heating at Tameside College is here to get you up to speed on the new framework so you know just what to expect.

> WHAT IS THE NEW FRAMEWORK?

> WHY HAS IT BEEN INTRODUCED?

The new Plumbing and Heating apprenticeship framework replaces the current Level 2 and 3 frameworks. It is a four-year programme – 45 months of training and 3 months for EPA (End Point Assessment). The whole qualification is Level 3 from the point of entry.

The new apprenticeship standard has been driven by employers within the industry. It is therefore deemed to be more appropriate for employer needs, meeting the occupational profile expected of someone working in the Plumbing and Heating sector.

HOW DOES IT WORK? Unlike previous apprentice qualifications, the whole qualification is Level 3 and is set up to train in all core requirements, which are: > KNOWLEDGE

> BEHAVIOURS

Health and safety, core plumbing systems, electrical components and control systems, plumbing science and processes, environmental technology, fossil fuels, customer service and communication

Honesty and integrity, dependability and responsibility, enthusiasm and positive attitude, quality focus, willingness to learn, working with others and sustainable working

> SKILLS Safe working, core plumbing system techniques, electrical components and control systems techniques and supervisory skills

> SUBJECT SPECIALISMS Fossil Fuel: Natural Gas, Fossil Fuel: Oil, Fossil Fuel: Solid Fuel or Environmental Technologies (including rainwater harvesting and greywater reuse systems, solar thermal hot water systems and air source heat pump systems)

“The whole qualification is Level 3 and is set up to train in.all core requirements”.

HOW IS IT DELIVERED & ASSESSED? Colleges and training centres have the opportunity to adopt a holistic approach to the development of apprentices. This offers employer participation through inviting them to colleges to add input to training requirements. Training can be made to fit in with the phases of the standards assessments.

> WHAT ARE THE PHASES? Each year of the programme is referred to as a phase. There are four phases, with the fourth including the EPA and phase tests. These could consist of: • Multiple choice test (knowledge) • Design project (knowledge) • Practical installation test (skills) • Practical application test (skills) • Professional discussion (knowledge, skills and behaviours) Each phase will have an assessment covering content from the delivery, phase by phase. For example, phase 1 may cover: • Safety (all learning outcomes) • Common processes and techniques (various outcomes)* • Scientific principles (various outcomes)* • Planning and supervision (various outcomes)* • Cold water (various outcomes)* • Hot water (various outcomes)* • Central heating (various outcomes)* • Rainwater (various outcomes)* • Sanitation (various outcomes)*

*various outcomes, depending on AO may be only 1, 2 or 3 outcomes during this phase. With the remaining outcomes covered during the following phases.

> PHASE 3 & 4 These will be primarily concerned with the subject specialism, which would be covered during these phases along with remaining core content. > WHAT ABOUT APPRENTICES ON THE OLD QUALIFICATION? The new programme is a Level 3 qualification, and the Level 2 apprentices will have missed some learning outcomes from the new qualification covering Level 3 content. Therefore, in order to join the new qualification, a bridging course may be required for some apprentices who are currently on a Level 2 programme, completing in 2020.

Further details on the assessment plan and the standards can be located at: www.instituteforapprenticeships.org/apprenticeship-standards/ plumbing-and-domestic-heating-technician/
