CIPHE: Make TMVs compulsory

T

he Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering (CIPHE) is calling for thermostatic mixing valves (TMVs) to be made compulsory. CIPHE wants the Government to change the law to help reduce the risk of household scalding and believes the compulsory introduction of TMVs (valves that mix hot and cold water to ensure a safe temperature) is necessary. Hospital admission stats from NHS Digital show that the most vulnerable in society are at a high risk of household scalds and burns. Those aged nine and under, and 60 and over, make up 24% of the UK population. But those groups account for 53% of scalding admissions.

Approved status for training centre

H

alifax-based Viva Training Academy is now an LCL Awardsapproved training centre. Viva offers a range of building services courses including LCL Awards’ New Entrants Gas MLP and Level 3 F Gas qualification. Founder Richard Firth, who also runs his own heating and insulation business, has plans to open up more opportunities for vulnerable groups including the homeless and ex-forces, as well as to create new training packages for school leavers. “We’re not afraid to shake up current approaches to learning and plan to revolutionise both access to training and the way it is delivered,” he said.

Plumber’s heart-warming campaign

P

lumber James Anderson has launched a GoFundMe campaign to provide free plumbing services to pensioners throughout the winter. James previously crowdfunded £80,000 after a Tweet showing an invoice for £0.00 he sent to a 91-year-old woman went viral.

> CITY PLUMBING/PTS CONTINUES SUPPORT OF CHARITY City Plumbing/PTS has extended its charity partnership with Teenage Cancer Trust. The plumbing and heating division of Travis Perkins has raised £2.3 million for the charity since 2012 and has signed up to support it for another year. The money raised goes towards helping young people facing cancer, including funding expert nurses and contributing to the construction of specialist care units. CEO Andrew Harrison said: “I’m so proud of everyone who has been involved over the years, pushing us to this extraordinary total of £2.3 million. “Working for this great cause which supports young people with cancer is a privilege and I am personally delighted to extend this partnership for a further year.”

> HEATING BUSINESSES ENCOURAGED TO TAKE ON APPRENTICES OFTEC has launched a campaign to highlight the benefits of hiring an apprentice. According to Department of Education data, the total number of apprenticeship starts among under 19s has fallen by 8% since 2017/18 to 83,300 and by 23% from 2016/17 levels. This drop is despite the introduction of the Apprenticeship Levy in April 2017, designed to encourage employers to invest in future skills. David Knipe, Training Manager at OFTEC, said: “Apprenticeships provide an excellent, low cost way to recruit, particularly when almost wholly funded by the Levy.” There’s more information about employing an apprentice at apprenticeships.gov.uk

GROHE opens college training centre

T

raining equipment donated by GROHE has led to the opening of a new training room for plumbing students at a vocational college in Essex. The new GROHE Training Centre at Colchester Institute is the first of its kind in the UK. It includes a fully functional display rig, featuring leak detection systems, self-flushing toilets and concealed

smart control systems, as well as 18 bathroom suites. Colchester Institute is already a stop-off location for GROHE’s XXL Experience Truck, a mobile classroom that gives students hands-on taster sessions on its leading products. As well as the donation of equipment, GROHE’s partnership with the college will also see its UK Training Manager, Chris Penney, deliver guest lectures on installing GROHE products.

DIGITAL COLUMN BY TOM TRACEY, DIGITAL EDITOR

If your long-term goal is to set up your own business, you need to know how to market yourself properly. Word of mouth is still a vital way of getting new business, but increasingly people will head straight to Google when they need a plumber. The latest figures from stats website Statista show that 16.5% of UK shopping is done online. The same website says that in 2021, 93% of UK internet users will do online shopping – the highest rate in Europe. So how can you, when offering a physical service, tap into this wealth of customers? You should try to have an online presence everywhere that a customer may look online. If they use Google, you’ll want to have a website which lists your details, the area you cover and what services you offer. Facebook is teeming with potential customers looking for a plumber to fix leaks or install new appliances, so this is one you definitely should have a page on. Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn also provide a platform to reach customers as well as to get tips and feedback from fellow professionals. If a customer can’t find you online, the likelihood is they’ll choose someone they can!

PLUMBER PROFILE: NATHAN GAMBLING HIP: What's the best thing about the industry? NG: The people in it. HIP: ...and one thing you'd change? NG: Training. HIP: What advice would you give to trainees? NG: There are three cohorts of trainee and I'd give different advice to each. Apprentices I would encourage to appreciate theoretical knowledge and that what they are learning out in the field may not always be correct. Some have the skill to gently nudge their employer in a better direction. Others may be with employers who would not appreciate a nudge. HIP Magazine: How did you get into plumbing? Nathan Gambling: My grandfather was heavily involved in the heating industry, helping with the development of the oil pressure jet burner. My father, after working for British Gas and Oil Burners, became a technical representative for Trianco Redfyre and it was he who got a local plumbing and heating company to take me on as an apprentice.

If a diploma student wants to get into the industry they are going to have to think outside the box. They vastly outnumber the amount of apprenticeship places available each year in the UK. Think what extra you can offer an employer, e.g. you may be excellent at first aid or be really handy with social media. Mature students fit into both the above. Think what life skills you have to offer a potential employer. I recently met online a mature student

Nathan Gambling hosts the betaTALK podcast, which features interviews with plumbers and revision episodes for students. We got his thoughts on tech, the environment and how to learn stuff.

who has a PhD in biochemistry. That’s excellent for a company that specialises in legionella and pseudomonas issues. HIP: How important is it for the industry to change to reduce carbon? NG: Ever since the UK central heating industry first got underway, efficiency has been important. Efficiency will almost always reduce emissions of all kinds. Carbon can be reduced without efficiency and I think that is something we need to be very aware of. HIP: What's the best bit of new technology you've seen (in the industry)? NG: Social media. It is helping learning take place at an unprecedented rate. I've see people learn about system design, Open Therm, principles of corrosion and boiler faults in a matter of hours. Not only do they learn about it, the knowledge is sticking. This is because they are discussing new knowledge with their peers. Peer learning, peer feedback and support is known to be one of the best ways we can ever learn stuff.

@betateach

HIP: Tell us a bit about your podcast NG: My podcast is simple – get the most important yet quietest voice in the industry listened to: that of the heating engineer/ plumber. I travel the country interviewing engineers and plumbers, and hopefully the wider sector and consumers will start to understand how valuable they are.

STARS

As HIP Apprentice of the Year 2020 gets underway, it’s time to catch up with last year’s winner Lewis Blakely and runner-up Leonard Keown to see how they have got on since the competition. HIP: Looking back at the competition, what has been the biggest benefit of entering?

WINNER

LB: The biggest benefit has probably been getting new tools and also having the title to my name. People tend to underestimate apprentices but getting to say you’re HIP Apprentice of the Year means that they take you a bit more seriously and know you have good work ethic. HIP: How have the prizes helped you?

HIP Magazine: What have you been up to since the competition? Lewis Blakely: Since the competition I’ve got a new job with a company where I am earning more money. Winning the competition definitely played a part in getting me the job. I’ve also been doing a lot of plumbing outside of work through word of mouth, as well as doing well in all my college assessments. HIP: Has your employer been giving you more responsibility since taking part? LB: As I’m with a new company they definitely threw me in at the deep end when I started. After not having very much gas work with the previous company, I found it exciting having lots of gas work to do. It is good to be able to practice what I am doing in college in a working environment.

LB: The prizes have helped me be more independent as I no longer have to ask my boss to borrow tools. It’s also helped me with finances as when I want to work independently, I won’t have to buy these tools in order to do the job. Having the tools has also gotten me more jobs outside of work as I can say yes to the jobs knowing I have the tools to do it. I also had some non-work related prizes, which have meant I’ve enjoyed a few days out. I have a trip to London coming up, which I claimed with the Virgin Experience Days voucher. HIP: What piece of advice will you give to people entering this year’s competition? LB: The advice I’d give is just take your time, you get put under a bit of pressure as it has to be done by a certain time but you can’t let it get to you. You just need to focus on your own work, making sure all your measurements are precise and your bends are accurate.

“Being HIP Apprentice of the Year means people take you a bit more seriously”

HIP: What have you been up to since the competition? Leonard Keown: Since the competition I have moved employers. I work for a company called Rathmore Mechanical from Co. Donegal. HIP: Has your employer been giving you more responsibility since taking part? LK: We work in teams of five people, which is great. We get to learn different and handy ways to do things. HIP: Looking back at the competition, what has been the biggest benefit of entering? LK: Since the competition I feel like I can bend any angle in a pipe and know it’s good quality work to be on show. HIP: What piece of advice will you give to people entering this year’s competition? LK: The competition is not easy and there is always pressure on, but if you can keep your focus there is a chance to win. HIP: What is the best thing about the competition?

HIP: What is the best thing about the competition? LB: I think the best thing about the competition is it gives you the courage to be able to complete these tasks in the working environment. You have to use your initiative as you can’t get any assistance. You learn to trust your instincts and really think about what comes next. Whether you take part in the regionals or get to the final, it’s a great achievement to be able to put on your CV. HIP: What did you find hardest last year? LB: When preparing for the competition, I struggled to find the time to practice as I was only in college for one day a week and had other work to do as well. Time management was also something that I found difficult during the competition. I was conscious of the time limit but knew I couldn’t rush and needed to pace myself to be able to complete it to the best of my ability. HIP: What do you hope to achieve in your career? LB: My long term goal is to have my own company and be able to help out other apprentices who were in my position. I have moved around multiple companies as they struggled to understand the terms of my apprenticeship and the work I needed to be completing in the field as part of my college course. I’d like to be able to help young apprentices complete their work and achieve what I have achieved and more in plumbing.

LK: For me it was coming over from Ireland and getting to meet the other competitors and get an insight into the way they are trained. HIP: What did you find hardest last year? LK: Managing my time was the hardest thing about the competition for me. HIP: What do you hope to achieve in your career? LK: I hope to have my own company some day.

“Since the competition I feel I can bend any angle in a pipe and know it's good quality”

UPS3 CHANGER

“Built on a platform proven in millions of boilers”

THE GAME

The launch of the UPS3 circulator from Grundfos Pumps at the start of the last heating season proved to be a great new signing for fans of the domestic products team.

S

ince then, the UPS3 15-50/60 has gained a significant following of supporters, numbers that are still continuing to grow. One very important attribute is the reliability this player can demonstrate, as they maintain a consistently high performance throughout the season. Improved energy efficiency is another key talent – that, combined with an easier-to-wire plug and on-

board diagnostics, makes this pump stand out from a standard offering. The much-admired stalwart features of this pump’s predecessor, such as ceramic bearings and shafts, a manual deblocking port and robust start-up functionality, were happily incorporated into this latest family member. Peace of mind is guaranteed as this pump was built on a platform that was proven in millions of boilers, prior to the UPS3 launch.

?

DID YOU KNOW? THE UPS3 CAN BE USED IN DOMESTIC HEATING SYSTEMS FOR BOTH VARIABLE AND CONSTANT FLOW RATES. IT AUTOMATICALLY CONTROLS THE DIFFERENTIAL PRESSURE BY ADJUSTING THE PUMP PERFORMANCE TO THE ACTUAL HEATING DEMAND, WITHOUT THE USE OF EXTERNAL COMPONENTS.

> KEY FEATURES > Higher efficiency – EEI ≤0.20 > Two proportional-pressure curves > Underfloor heating mode – two constant pressure settings > Installer power plug – no opening of control box required > Alarm indication – for easy fault diagnosis > Extra performance – up to 6.5m head > Automatic and manual deblocking – robust start-up function > Simple installation

LOW CARBON ENERGY IS THE FUTURE Jerry Whiteley, Technical Manager at the Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering, looks at the future of heating and gives us his top tips for installers.

T

he heating landscape is changing rapidly with some very interesting changes that may come into force through Part L of the Building Regulations in 2020. One important change on the horizon might be the mandating of a maximum heating flow temperature of 55°C in new build properties, in line with the Future Homes Standard in 2025. This maximum flow temperature requirement will inevitably be required in existing properties in the future as well.

“The heating landscape is changing rapidly”

> HOW WILL THIS AFFECT THE WAY WE INSTALL OUR HEATING SYSTEMS?

1

It will be important that you really understand your customer’s needs for heating and hot water. How do they use their hot water and for how long?

2

You will need to carry out a heat loss calculation of the property to understand each room’s heating load requirements.

3

If you are installing radiators in an existing property, you will have to potentially oversize the radiator by a factor of three. Do not assume that the radiators were originally oversized.

4

If you are installing a heat pump then you may need to ensure you increase the size of your heating pipework.

5 6

Size your heating pump correctly.

You may need to install weather compensation heating controls.

HOT TIP DON’T JUST ROUND UP FIGURES, AS BAD DESIGNS LEAD TO HIGHER ENERGY BILLS

7

It will be imperative that you ensure the customer is fully aware of how to use the heating system before you finish the job.

Design, install and commission the system so it meets the customer’s expectations. They will expect savings on energy bills and your design is paramount to achieving this.

COUNTING THE COST O F R E N E WA B L E H E AT An increasing number of customers are turning to renewable heat sources as a cost-effective and energy efficient solution. But if the heat source is sited in an outbuilding or communal plant room, how can it be delivered to its end point in an efficient way?

W

hen remotely sited, most renewable heat sources – including air source heat pumps, ground source heat pumps and biomass boilers – need pipework to transfer the heated water they produce into the main building or to multiple properties. The danger is that in doing so, heat can be lost through poorly insulated pipework. One solution is to specify preinsulated pipework. Constructed with an insulating layer and an outer casting, pre-insulated pipe systems provide high-quality insulation to maintain the temperature of the water running through the pipes. Available typically in lengths ranging from 1 to 100 metres, the pipework is laid underground at a depth of between 0.4 and 1.0 metres.

> LOW HEAT LOSS Pre-insulated pipework is often thought to be costly, but this isn’t necessarily the case. Often only the initial material cost of the piping is taken into account when weighing up the options, but it is important to look at the product cost versus life-cycle returns when calculating. Choose a pre-insulated piping system with a very low heat loss for example, and the savings soon add up. Piping that can be installed in one uninterrupted length from the heat source to the building, eliminating intermediate joints entirely, will further minimise installation, maintenance and costs.

QUIZ TIME HOW DEEP UNDERGROUND ARE PRE-INSULATED PIPEWORK SYSTEMS TYPICALLY LAID?

Often referred to as district heating pipes and commonly used for projects with a centralised heat source feeding multiple properties, this is a method that is used in the commercial heating sector. With the rise in popularity of biomass boilers, it is now being seen in domestic situations too.

?

DID YOU KNOW? PRE-INSULATED PIPEWORK HAS AN AVERAGE WORKING LIFE OF AROUND 30 YEARS

GOING GREEN Triton makes waves towards sustainable targets

Vaillant using smart tech to fight fuel poverty

I

n a continued bid to reduce its environmental impact, Triton Showers has made some significant savings in the last 12 months.

V

aillant has developed a new social housing gateway that allows social landlords to remotely monitor boilers within their housing stock to manage energy costs, reduce downtime and accelerate repairs.

Investment in a new shrink wrap process has resulted in a 3,180kg reduction in plastic per year, while the introduction of LED lighting throughout the company will see a reduction in carbon of 178 tonnes and a further 12.5% by the end of 2020. Triton has also reduced its gas consumption by 32% and water consumption by 31%.

The system detects underperforming boilers that are using too much energy, while remote monitoring allows landlords to monitor energy consumption and set optimum performance and comfort settings for their tenants.

Office staff have also helped to achieve further savings through the introduction of a paperless desk policy as well as a series of new processes which have seen a 28.5% reduction in paper waste.

To minimise costly and unnecessary service visits, the software can predict when the system water pressure will drop below the failure point, or notify the landlord when any connected boiler falls below the required water pressure. Landlords can then contact the tenant and send them one of Vaillant’s instructional videos on how to repressurise the boiler or arrange for an engineer to visit. Steve Cipriano, Commercial Director at Vaillant, said: “This development is part of a wider initiative to support the fight against fuel poverty and improve the standard of living for all connected tenants.” Modern water softeners are compatible with any boiler, which means every household in a hard water area is a potential customer. For more information visit www.vaillant.co.uk

GROHE supports Pacific Garbage Screening project

G

ROHE is supporting a project that shares its own vision of clean water through the reduction of plastic waste. The Pacific Garbage Screening (PGS) project is developing a floating platform that collects plastic waste before it damages the ecosystems in oceans and rivers. GROHE’s own Blue filtered tap system is helping make disposable plastic bottles a thing of the past. By using GROHE Blue, a family of four can avoid an average of 760 plastic bottles per year – a benefit not only for consumers but also for the environment.

My number one tool in the kit has to be the pipe slice. Definitely the best plumbing tool invention in my eyes. It's used every day and I couldn’t go without it. These pipe slices from Nerrad have never failed me and come in sizes 8, 10, 15, 22 and 28mm. I’ve no idea how people coped before they came on the scene!

I love my Nerrad Shifter (adjustable). I’ve always loved using this sort of tool so that’s why I’ve recently purchased the Knipex flat jaw pliers.

The Knipex grip pliers are such a good tool.

These are my latest additions.

HIGH EFFICIENCY CIRCULATOR PUMPS Stuart Turner’s new range of circulator pumps offers an engineered, electronically controlled option for heating, hot water heating and air conditioning. Let’s take a look at the three models in the range.

T

he new range is suitable for a wide variety of pump applications such as single and twin pipe heating systems and mixing loops. The ST 15/60 and ST 25/80 cast iron heating circulator models are designed to constantly circulate hot water within a closed loop system, offering a typical performance of 4.5 cubic metres per hour and up to an impressive eight metres head. The ST 15/60 B bronze circulating pump is designed to constantly circulate hot water within a domestic system and offers a performance of up to 3.3 cubic metres per hour and up to six metres head. Utilising high efficiency, permanent magnet motor technology and ceramic bearings, the three models provide enhanced energy efficiency.

ST 25/80

Each circulator offers three constant speed modes: low, medium or high or for even greater savings, three proportional pressure modes. This means the pump constantly monitors the system pressure and flow and adjusts according to system demand, ensuring optimum efficiency and minimum energy consumption.

> PERFECT REPLACEMENT Stuart circulators make the installer’s life easier, too. Designed as a perfect replacement for any 130 or 180 port-to-port model currently in the market, they are a hasslefree, easy retrofit replacement. The terminal box can be easily configured to suit the installation and the pump setup is easy too – simply scroll through the pre-configured options until the preferred setting is illuminated.

ST 15/60 B

Stuart circulators are continuously rated, CE compliant, manufactured from robust bronze or cast iron materials and come with a guarantee of up to five years. Support for installers is provided by Stuart Turner’s TechAssist team of technical experts. For further information visit www.stuart-turner.co.uk

FORWARD THINKING

When it comes to water softeners one size doesn’t fit all, so installers need to do their homework to ensure they select the right unit for their clients’ needs, says Kevin Johnson, MD of Monarch Water and Technical Director of the UK Water Treatment Association.

W

ith 60% of the UK living in hard water areas and only 6% of homes owning a water softener, limescale is a common problem that has the potential to provide installers with a lucrative new line of revenue. To maximise the potential of this relatively untapped market, installers need to ensure they know which unit to recommend to their customers. Working out the correctly-sized water softener is fairly simple – installers just need to allow 142 litres of water per person per day, based on the maximum number of potential occupants.

Modern water softeners are compatible with any boiler, which means every household in a hard water area is a potential customer.

HOT TIP TO WORK OUT THE RIGHT SIZE OF WATER SOFTENER, ALLOW 142 LITRES OF WATER PER PERSON PER DAY

With sustainability high on consumers’ list of priorities, installers should opt for the latest generation of water softeners, which are faster and more efficient.

> INSTALLERS' CHECK LIST > TEST THE WATER Assess the hardness of customers’ water with kits provided by the manufacturer > FLOW RATE Check the incoming mains pressure and maximum flow rate – below one bar and the machine may not function, over five bar and a pressure reducing valve might be required > DRAINAGE Ensure there’s an overflow facility near the proposed position of the softener > EASY ACCESS Close proximity to a plug socket is vital when installing an electric model, as is access to refill salt For more info, visit monarchwater.co.uk

Must-have features include mini top-up regenerations, which save water, and rapid-fit bypasses, which remove 80% of the equipment usually required. New water softeners also reduce salt consumption – some new models use around 12% less salt. Rapid-fit bypass

CUTTING DOWN ON

MAINTENANCE

Sam Hayes, Project Engineer at Fernox, discusses the benefits of its innovative filter technology, and how it can spare installers and customers unnecessary maintenance costs.

E

nsuring a central heating system is kept free of corrosion, debris and sludge is vital to maintaining efficiency, as this debris can block pipework and damage boiler components. This can, in turn, lead to radiator cold spots, longer times to reach the desired temperature and premature boiler failure. In order to tackle such problems, recent updates to BS 7593:2019, which came into effect in May 2019, provide clear guidance that the best practice approach is to clean and dose correctly with chemical water treatment, followed by the permanent installation of an in-line system filter. Choosing a filter from an innovative and experienced manufacturer will ensure product reliability and performance. One such manufacturer is Fernox.

> INDUSTRY FIRSTS Since its establishment in 1964, Fernox has been at the forefront of revolutionising the plumbing industry with its groundbreaking products – introducing a number of firsts to the industry such as the first domestic corrosion inhibitor, powerflushing machine and dual action system filters. Continuing this trend, Fernox has also manufactured the first sealed, composite plastic filter – the TF1 Sigma Filter.

“Choosing a filter from an innovative and experienced manufacturer will ensure product reliability and performance” 28

H IP I WI NTE R 2 0 2 0 I WAT E R T RE AT M E N T

Manufactured from a robust composite polymer, the filter utilises Fernox’s unique Hydronic Particle Separation Technology (HPS) combined with powerful magnet filtration to remove system debris fast and effectively.

> NO NEED TO REPLACE O-RINGS Responding to extensive market feedback from installers, the TF1 Sigma Filter has been developed as a sealed unit with no removable lid. Adopting this approach eliminates the need to replace O-rings, reducing ongoing maintenance costs associated with traditional plastic filters. It has also been tested to extreme flow and pressure conditions, to ensure its robustness. Due to its ability to be positioned at an angle up to 45°, the TF1 Sigma is ideal for use in restricted spaces. It is available with either high-quality valves or slip socket connection, depending on installer preference.

?

DID YOU KNOW? THE TF1 SIGMA FILTER IS AVAILABLE IN 22MM AND 28MM VERSIONS AND CAN BE INSTALLED IN-LINE ON HORIZONTAL OR VERTICAL PIPEWORK OR IN ANY ORIENTATION IN BOTH FLOW DIRECTIONS

SYSTEM OF CHOICE Wayne Bettess, from Off The Tools, tells us why plastic push-fit, and Wavin Hep2O in particular, is his system of choice.

I

One of the key issues that plumbers face during installation is ensuring the pipe system is fully secure. Wavin Hep2O has developed its unique In4Sure™ technology to make this simple. When the pipe is inserted, pushed and twisted it produces a ‘rumble’ so installers know that it’s secure, making it ideal when working in tight spaces or where visibility is limited.

n the last decade, plastic pushfit systems have become an increasingly popular solution for a variety of heating and plumbing projects. As these systems become more and more commonly used, manufacturers across the market, including Wavin Hep2O, have continued to innovate and evolve their offerings to meet the everchanging needs of installers. This includes increased flexibility and time-saving solutions which work across confined spaces, floor spaces and lofts.

Wayne said: “I’ve been in the plumbing game for 15 years and I have always used Wavin Hep2O when it comes to plastic pipework and fittings. One of the reasons I love

Wayne Bettess, from Off The Tools

using this brand is because of the simple way it comes out of the coil. It lays nice and straight and it’s super flexible, getting me out of a lot of sticky situations and making my life easier with challenging jobs.”

Wayne said: “Despite what we all might think, plumbers are not perfect, and thanks to the HepKey™ it’s super easy to demount every joint and it’s handy to know that Wavin Hep2O comes with a 50-year guarantee.”

HOW TO INSTALL

UFLEX MINI

UNDERFLOOR HEATING Underfloor heating previously had a reputation for being tricky and time consuming to fit but with new solutions, such as the Grant Uflex MINI, it is becoming much easier for installers to work with.

“Uflex MINI can be installed over any existing level floor surface”

> FEATURES & BENEFITS > Low profile – ideal for retro-fit situations

G

rant UK’s wet underfloor heating range comprises two systems – Uflex and Uflex MINI. Designed to partner effectively with renewable technologies in particular, this solution complements and works alongside Grant’s existing product ranges, such as the Aerona³ R32 air source heat pump. The Uflex MINI underfloor heating system can suit new builds, retro-fits and renovation projects, providing flexibility when it comes to installation. It can be installed over any existing level floor surfaces and is compatible with most types of floor covering. Grant’s Uflex MINI underfloor heating system has a very low profile, only raising the finished floor level by 15mm, which allows the underfloor

34

heating installation to be completed without requiring significant changes to a room’s structure.

> Quick installation and drying time

> PLASTIC PANELS

> Quick reaction time

Utilising self-adhesive plastic panels, the Uflex MINI system can be installed by a single installer as the pipework loops simply clip into place, eliminating the need for staples. A real advantage is that this system does not require overboarding, unlike other retrofit systems, so the final floor finish can be laid directly on top of the dry screed. Heat can therefore be introduced into the system within days, rather than weeks as is commonly the case with screeded systems.

COMPLETELY FLOORED The number of underfloor heating systems, controls and configuration options available can pose a daunting choice for those getting to grips with this growing market. Underfloor heating manufacturer Polypipe offers some guidance to follow when selecting the best water-based system for your project.

> THE IN-FLOOR SYSTEM

> THE BETWEEN-JOIST SYSTEM

> THE OVER-FLOOR SYSTEM

If working with a completely new floor, an in-floor system can be installed within a new solid or screeded floor surface. Polypipe offers three systems including the unique red floor panel system, and the established rail and staple systems, which fit directly onto insulation. The red floor panel system in particular is designed for ease of installation, using plastic moulding to guide the path of the system’s pipes.

This system avoids adding height to the floor as it is fitted between existing joists – so is ideal in upper floor renovations or work in cellars. Between-joist systems are available in a wide range of formats, but it is worth investigating the preconfigured modular heating panels from Polypipe for the ultimate quick and easy installation.

Best used on existing solid or timber deck floors, these low profile systems are installed over the floor and are the go-to choice for whole house and single room projects. Polypipe’s unique Overlay™ range accommodates all types of projects, dependent on the final floor covering selection.

> KEY PRODUCTS: Red floor plate, clip rails, staple system

> THE APPLICATION: Best used for new-build projects of whole houses, or perhaps just an extension or conservatory being added to the building.

ADVISING FUEL POOR HOUSEHOLDS Staying warm this winter won’t be easy for the 11% of the English population classed as fuel poor. Andrew Clarke, Senior Category Manager at Graham Plumbers’ Merchant, looks at how installers can help low-income customers improve the energy efficiency of their home and reduce energy bills.

F

or installers, having an understanding of the grants and schemes available for those who are fuel poor is invaluable in providing the highest level of service. Not only are there a number of payment schemes available, but some households can even apply for grants to improve the energy efficiency of their property, which if advised on could lead to potential business. These grants and schemes include:

?

DID YOU KNOW? YOU CAN FIND OUT MORE ABOUT THE GRANTS AVAILABLE TO HOMEOWNERS AT

> WINTER FUEL PAYMENT > WARM HOME DISCOUNT > COLD WEATHER PAYMENTS

While a well and regularly serviced boiler will improve energy performance and reduce the chance of breakdown, inevitably at some point a homeowner will have no choice but to replace their boiler. For these instances and where systems do not qualify for a grant or scheme, it is essential that installers assess the property and the needs of the building occupants sufficiently. If energy bills are an issue, the efficiency of the whole system should be a key consideration, not only the upfront cost of a new system.

> UNBIASED ADVICE > GRANTS FOR ENERGY EFFICIENCY – E.G. ECO SCHEME

Encouraged by legislation such as Boiler Plus, there are a wealth of energy efficient boilers on the market. By visiting a local merchant, installers can access unbiased advice on the most energy efficient boilers on the market at all price points. Merchants can also provide extensive help on further tools in managing heating efficiency such as heating controls. With an extensive variety of controls on the market, merchants can recommend a cost-effective solution to help reduce ongoing energy bills. During the winter period, installers should refrain from recommending the replacement of a heating system like-forlike, and instead question what would be the most efficient and cost-effective solution.

HOW TO COMMISSION

AN ALPHA E-TEC PLUS BOILER Andy Styler of Alpha Heating Innovation shows us how to commission its E-Tec Plus 33 combination boiler.

T

he E-Tec Plus range of combination boilers, launched in 2018, is available in 28kW and 33kW outputs. Once the E-Tec Plus has been installed in line with the manufacturer’s instructions, connected to the heating and hot water system and connected to the power, the system should be filled. The boiler can then be commissioned ready for use.

> STEP ONE

01

The first step in the commissioning process is to test the gas inlet working pressure. Remove the front of the case by removing the screws that hold it in place. This will provide access to all the key components of the boiler.

> STEP TWO

02

Lower the control panel to access the gas valve and slacken the inlet test point using a T10 torx/star tool. Isolate the gas supply underneath the boiler.

“If the boiler is not going to be used immediately, the gas service cock should be closed and the electrical supply switched off” 44

H IP I WI NTE R 2 0 2 0 I B O IL E R S

> STEP THREE

03

Attach a gas test gauge to the inlet pressure test point on the valve. Reinstate the gas supply and run the hot tap to force the boiler into maximum output and check that the measurement on the gauge is at least 20 Millibar (mbar). Turn off the hot tap, isolate the gas supply underneath the boiler and remove the test gauge. Reinstate the gas supply, tighten the inlet pressure point and test with leak detection fluid.

> STEP FOUR

04

Before commencing the CO² setup procedure, ensure that the front case is fitted, that the flue system is not blocked or restricted, that the gas supply working pressure is correct and the system has been purged. It is also important to check that there is no recirculation in the boiler flue circuit and that the condensate trap is pre-filled.

> STEP FIVE

05

Attach the flue gas analyser to the flue test point on the top of the boiler. Press and hold the RESET button for eight seconds to activate ‘chimney sweep’ mode – the parasol and snowman icons will flash. The boiler will fire at a fixed output and remain active for 15 minutes.

> STEP NINE

09

Select low fire mode using the DHW down button and allow the boiler to stabilise. Compare the CO² levels to the low fire value shown in the installation manual. For natural gas installations, this should be between 8.4% and 8.9%.

> STEP SIX

> STEP SEVEN

06

Use the domestic hot water (DHW) buttons to alternate between high and low fire. Select high fire and allow the boiler to stabilise. If the boiler temperature begins to rise close to the maximum during the procedure, a hot water tap should be opened to reduce the heat.

> STEP TEN

10

> STEP EIGHT

07

Compare the measured CO² levels to the high fire value shown in the installation manual. For natural gas installations, the CO² reading for an E-Tec 33 should be between 9.3% and 9.7%. If the reading is not in this range, the gas valve max CO² can be adjusted using a 4mm hex tool.

> STEP ELEVEN

Similarly, the gas valve minimum CO² can be adjusted using a T40 torx/star tool, replacing the front cover and allowing it to stabilise before confirming the levels.

11

Exit chimney sweep mode by holding the RESET button for eight seconds. Remove the analyser, replace the flue test point and reattach the cover.

08

Always replace the front cover after adjusting the gas valve and allow the boiler to stabilise. This takes about 30 seconds, at which point a new reading can be taken to confirm that the correct level has been achieved.

> STEP TWELVE

12

Press the INFO button then use the DHW buttons to scroll through the ‘d’ parameters. Press the MODE button to view the value of that parameter. A full list of parameters can be found in the instruction manual.

It is vital that the correct commissioning procedure is followed according to the manufacturer’s instructions. To find out more about the Alpha E-Tec range visit www.alpha-innovation.co.uk

Tim’s boss described him as “helpful, interested, clever, committed, trustworthy and honourable” and said he is “a credit to my firm, himself, his college and probably most importantly, will honour his family name.”

Josh was the winner of November’s award, which was sponsored by Triton Showers. Josh was nominated by Chris Walling, his lecturer at Coleg Llandrillo, who said: “For a relatively inexperienced apprentice, the standard of his work and attitude are excellent. He works with minimal supervision and is progressing really well.”

HOW TO MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR APPRENTICESHIP The Scottish and Northern Ireland Plumbing Employers’ Federation (SNIPEF) is the trade association for plumbing and heating businesses in Scotland and Northern Ireland. These are SNIPEF’s top tips on how to get the most from an apprenticeship.

> ASK QUESTIONS Asking questions is how we learn. Your colleagues will understand you’re learning and will expect you to have questions. Remember, it’s better to feel silly about asking a question than it is to make a mistake because you didn’t ask.

> BE ENTHUSIASTIC

HOT TIP IT'S BETTER TO FEEL SILLY ABOUT ASKING A QUESTION THAN IT IS TO MAKE A MISTAKE BECAUSE YOU DIDN'T ASK

“Approach your apprenticeship with your future in mind”

Through SNIPEF Training Services Ltd, SNIPEF is the managing agent for plumbing apprenticeships in Scotland and works closely with Skills Development Scotland to deliver the Modern Apprenticeship in Domestic Plumbing & Heating SVQ Level 3. A positive attitude will get you a long way and will help people notice and remember you. An apprenticeship is full of challenges but approaching each one with a positive outlook will encourage people to help you when needed or think of you when new opportunities arise.

> PLAN FOR THE LONG-TERM You need to approach your apprenticeship with your future in mind. The choices you make now could impact the direction of your life so take time to consider what your goals are. There may be future opportunities within the business you completed your apprenticeship with. Your attitude and behaviour could impact whether you have a future career with them.

> USE THE RESOURCES AVAILABLE TO YOU If you’re having trouble with your apprenticeship, whether it’s issues with travel, managing coursework or understanding a concept, your college lecturer and employer can help you.

VIESSMANN COMPETITION

WIN

WIN 1 OF 3 SETS OF A VIESSMANN BRANDED COAT AND WOOLLY HAT

A

t just 11 kW output, the UK’s newest and smallest system boiler will provide end-users with an optimum-sized, efficient and reliable boiler with a lower price tag.

Viessmann has introduced the UK’s lowest output system boiler, as its new Vitodens 200 domestic boiler range arrives in merchants across the country. The new 11 kW Vitodens 200-W responds to demand from installers for system boilers that closely match the heat demand of the majority of modest-sized, well-insulated homes. Not many homes have a heat load of more than 10 kW, yet most system boiler ranges start at an output of around 19 kW. This means that the majority of system boilers in the UK are oversized. Homeowners are buying larger boilers than they need and once installed, the boiler cycles more than it needs to, increasing running costs and wear and tear. A correctly-sized boiler will be more efficient and last longer. The Vitodens 200-W 11 kW model means installers no longer have to ‘range rate’ larger boilers. System boilers can now be fitted where heatonly models may have been chosen previously. The boiler has a higher heat output rating of 17 kW for the generation of hot water, so there is no trade-off between space and DHW heat.

HOW TO ENTER… 56

Q. Viessmann’s new Vitodens 200-W boiler range starts at 11 kW output but what is the starting output of most system boiler ranges? Email your answers to info-uk@viessmann.com by Monday 18th May 2020. Please remember to send your full contact details and quote coat size S to XXXL. Winners will be notified by email within seven days of the closing date.

SMART SMOKE ALARM

The advancement of smart technology means it can now play a large part in the safety of customers’ lives. In the second part of this series, Natalie Bird, Category Manager at Graham Plumbers’ Merchant, looks at how the Google Nest Protect Smoke and CO Alarm can benefit homeowners and their families.

H

ouse fires claim about 200 lives in the UK every year with fatalities mostly occurring between 10pm and 6am, when occupants are asleep. Traditional smoke alarms are often the sole technology installed to alert the household to the presence of smoke. But in 2018, 38% of battery operated smoke alarms did not sound during a fire. This was largely due to missing, disconnected or dead batteries. To combat this issue, smart smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) detectors have been developed which not only have longer periods of life but also test themselves automatically, notifying users via a phone alert when battery levels are low. Most systems also allow users to check battery levels as and when required.

?

DID YOU KNOW? GOOGLE’S NEST PROTECT SMOKE AND CO ALARM HAS A LIFE SPAN OF UP TO 10 YEARS

> MAKE A DIFFERENCE Google’s Nest Protect Smoke and CO Alarm has an industrialgrade smoke sensor that can test itself automatically. The smart device will check its batteries and sensors more than 400 times a day. The alarm is equipped with a split-spectrum sensor that uses two wavelengths of light to look for fast-burning and smoldering fires. Each Nest Protect alarm within a household is connected wirelessly, so when one detects a fire or dangerous carbon monoxide levels, all the devices sound an alarm together in a human voice. An additional feature of the alarm is that it emits a path of light when users walk under the system at night – allowing users to see where they are going without the need for additional lighting. These light levels can be adjusted using the app.

2773 SERIES THE WAY TO CONNECT

WAGO, the connection technology specialist, is launching its new COMPACT 2773 PUSH WIRE® series in the first quarter of 2020.

T

he 2773 series builds upon the success of the 773 and 2273 series, combining the benefits of both into one new connector series which can accept conductors with a cross section up to 4mm² and a current rating of up to 32A.

with one another. The space-saving flat design means they are ideal for even the tightest of spaces, such as behind switches or electrical sockets. Approved for voltages up to 450V, they are ideal for building installations and three-phase current applications.

Available in 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 8-conductor versions, the connectors accept solid conductors from 0.75mm² to 4mm², and 7-stranded conductors from 1.5mm² to 4mm².

While speed and simplicity are important, WAGO also wants to make work safer and more reliable. This is achieved with easy-to-read technical markings, a transparent enclosure enabling quick visual inspection of conductor termination, and a test point for continuity testing once installed.

Using the WAGO COMPACT 2773 series connectors, both solid and stranded conductors can be connected easily, quickly and reliably

INSTALLING THE RINNAI SENSEI N SERIES

1 ?

DID YOU KNOW? THE AVERAGE HOUSEHOLD USES 349 LITRES OF WATER EACH DAY.

> THERE IS A DESIGN CHANGE TO THE PCB

There are no more dipswitches or setting burner pressures to worry about – all the settings are done using the controller. Make sure that when commissioning the appliance you log all the settings in the correct pages of the manual. When the appliance is due for service or maintenance is required, these can be checked to ensure nothing has been tampered with.

2

> SERVICE LEVEL SETTING

The N Series can be set so a service reminder flashes up at intervals chosen by the installer. These can be six, 12 or 24-month periods. Some gas appliances are still installed and forgotten about, but with commercial appliances it is important a service is carried out on a regular basis and this can be a good reminder for the user. A service should be carried out at least every 12 months and if the appliance is used harder and longer then more frequent servicing should take place.

3

> FIXED TEMPERATURE SETTING

The Sensei allows temperatures to be adjusted on the controller, or the installer can choose a fixed temperature. This fixed temperature is beneficial in commercial applications utilising storage and/or return systems. By fixing the temperature, it can prevent idle hands from altering the temperature and potentially setting it to a level that could cause Legionella problems.

Rinnai’s new generation of continuous flow hot water systems can deliver more than 950 litres of temperature controlled hot water per hour from a single unit. These are Rinnai’s top tips for those installing the Sensei N Series.

4

> NEW CONDENSATE PUMP SAFETY SWITCH

The Sensei can be linked to a condensate pump, which if it fails will shut the water heater down safely. It must be noted that the switch is not there to provide power to the pump, but merely as a safety cut-off for the appliance.

“When commissioning, log all settings in the correct pages of the manual”
