SPARKS MAGAZINE | WINTER ISSUE 2017 | INTERVIEW

A ONCE-IN-A-LIFETIME EXPERIENCE

INTERVIEW | WINTER ISSUE 2017 | SPARKS MAGAZINE

Neil McManus is the Construction Programme Area Manager at Leicester College and he has worked at the college for 15 years. Almost seven years ago he joined forces with REY Europe and Third Sector International to provide his students with an incredible work experience opportunity in Spain, funded by the Erasmus plus programme, an European Commission initiative. We caught up with Neil to see just what it’s all about… “At any one time we have twelve electrical engineering students staying in a small Spanish village about 40km outside of Seville. At the beginning of the trip, they have a week in Seville to settle and orientate themselves. They learn all about the culture and they go on different trips to places like Granada. But once they get stuck in, we communicate with them each day about the work they will be doing via WhatsApp. “The students carry out a work experience placement with a local Spanish electricians firm to get practical work experience that relates to their course. “Once a week they have Spanish lessons and once a week they play football with the locals, as they live in local apartments while they’re out there. They tend to end up having 4 days of work experience a week, and they spend the rest of their time cooking, cleaning and doing other practical things. “As far as the selection process for it goes, I open it up to Level 3 learners initially and then after some of the new intakes have been there a while in May / June time, I open it up to the rest, including the Level Ones. They take their textbooks and learning materials with them, and you can see a massive improvement in their attitude and maturity afterwards. “Most of the learners have never travelled independently before, so the trip is a real opportunity for personal and professional development.”

KHALEEM MOHAMED, ANOTHER LEICESTER COLLEGE LEARNER, ALSO REFLECTED ON THE BENEFITS THAT HE HAS GAINED: “A key learning experience was being on site in a different country and learning about how they handle electrical work. This has given me confidence that electrical work is what I want to do in future. “It was a great way to meet new people, interact, learn more about where I was staying and increase my Spanish. This trip has helped me professionally and socially as I have gained confidence and expanded my skills such as communication skills, punctuality, confidence in face-to-face communication and listening skills.”

Neil McManus has observed significant and positive changes amongst the students that have been involved in the project, and has now opened up the opportunity to the wider construction department. He said: “Currently I have planned for over 100 of our students to go out there, as we have opened it up to more people within construction. Every month more or less there will be a group out there from January. I or another member of staff will go out there with them in the first week to show them how to navigate local transport and to show them where things like the supermarket are and then we leave them out there for three weeks. “Our plan is to hopefully start bringing Spanish students over to the UK to work with our students at Leicester College. We’re also considering other locations, such as Portugal or Crete. “It’s such an incredible opportunity for the students because it means that when they go for interviews they will have something to talk about. I’ve also got a great team behind me: I organise the funding and put things in place but it really is a team effort.”  Visit leicestercollege.ac.uk

KARL SMITH, ONE OF THE LEARNERS FROM LEICESTER COLLEGE DESCRIBED HIS EXPERIENCE: “Seville was great. We were allowed to get hands-on experience working out in the field. We worked on engineering control panels and helped terminate pumping stations. The tasks provided some fantastic opportunities to grow within my chosen field. “I would advise any learners who are given the opportunity to do something similar to really consider it as a serious career stepping stone – don’t miss out. It is a fantastic experience that will help take you to the next level.”

...the trip is a real opportunity for personal and professional development.

KLEIN TOOLS GETS TOUGH ON TESTING Klein Tools has expanded its Tough Meter range of test and measurement products with the launch of the NCVT-3 Non Contact Voltage Tester with Flashlight. Safety rating Designed to identify AC voltage in a wide range of applications, the rugged NCVT-3 detects the full range of 12-1000V AC to accommodate both low and standard voltage environments.

Features It incorporates a number of safety features including a simultaneous visual and audible voltage indicator which makes it suitable for a wide variety of installation environments. The visual voltage indicator utilises five bright LEDs for easy interpretation and viewing of voltage strength while the audible voltage indicator beeps at a greater frequency the higher the voltage, or the closer it gets to the voltage source. It also features an integrated torch which works independently of the tester and can be used as a standalone tool.

This new addition to the range lives up to the Tough Meters standard with an IP67 rating, which ensures that it is fully dust and waterproof whatever the conditions, a CAT IV 1000V safety rating as standard and drop protection of up to 6.6ft (2m).

Future developments Malcolm Duncan, Managing Director says: “Klein Tools is constantly researching and identifying ways to make products more functional and robust and as a result we have created the NCVT-3 which has been specifically engineered to be both tough and durable and as a result able to withstand the rigours of even the toughest installation.”  Visit kleintools.co.uk

SMART TECH, SMART USERS, SMARTER BUSINESS THINKING? According to the ONS, in 2016 the internet was used daily or almost daily by 41.8m people, nearly 50% more users than ten years ago. Couple this with Cisco’s prediction of more than 50bn devices connected by 2020, the rise of the internet and the internet of things (IoT) promises a brave new world of connected devices, smart homes, smart cities and ultimately, better living. Yet today, over 50% of small businesses still don’t have a basic online presence with a company website, despite the shift in consumer behaviour and user expectations. IoT already provides opportunities for electricians today to grow their business by moving into areas that have previously been perceived as too complicated or unrelated.

The ability of devices to connect, control and share data lay the path for a smarter way of managing and interacting with our environments. SWA’S FIREFLY FIRE SAFETY CLIPS WIN 8 AWARDS SWA’s Firefly Cable Clips have been awarded eight Warrington Fire Safety Certificates for their BS7671 Amendment 3 compliant range of clips. The Certificates represent a major coup for Firefly as their entire range of inside / outside trunking clips are now proven.

Unique design SWA’s Firefly Cable Clips boast a unique, spring-loaded design, which embeds tighter into substructure as a fire takes hold, making the risk of overhead cables falling almost impossible. In the tests at Warrington in July using a Prysmian Plus fire alarm cable, the clips stayed in place as temperatures reached 930ºC for 120 minutes. The comprehensive

test included a shock and water spray test. SWA Director Brian Hands says: “It is important to our customers and to the UK Fire Services whose lives are put at risk by falling cables that we test the integrity of our clips. We wanted it proven they were 100% reliable at very high temperatures for a recommended period to allow unhindered entry and escape during a building fire.”  Visit swaonline.co.uk or call the SWA Sales office: 01453 844 333.

SHOWCASING THE BRIGHT SPARKS Joanne Iceton, Head of Communications at EAL and Semta says it is time for young electrical apprentices to turn the spotlight on to themselves. I never cease to be amazed by the fantastic talent working in engineering companies of all sizes right across the UK - brilliant enthusiastic apprentices, higher apprentices and graduates making a valuable contribution to their employers while learning their trade from more experienced colleagues. We need their help to highlight just what a fulfilling career can be had in engineering whatever your background or gender.

Chris Eckhert

It is a fact that industry requires 100,000 new graduates in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects every year until 2020 just to maintain current employment numbers.

Industry competitions One of the ways we support this aim is through the engineering WorldSkills UK competitions at the Skills Show at the NEC, Birmingham in November, where competitors who have won through from regional heats get the chance to compete against each other for gold medals and a place in the international WorldSkills finals being held in Abu Dhabi in 2017 and Kazan, Russia two years later.

Are you eligible to enter?

semta.org.uk/worldskills-uk Joanne Iceton

We also have the Semta Skills Awards handed out to those judged to be the Best in

British Engineering by a panel of independent industry experts. Last year the winner of the apprentice category was electrical engineer Chris Eckhert, who was nominated by his company Packaging Automation. He said on winning: “I am just a regular guy who goes to work at a family-run business in Knutsford and there were brilliant people in my category from the likes of Toyota who had been to Japan and Brazil, so I thought I had no chance. The whole experience on the night was just brilliant.” We are very proud of Chris and all the other winners but we need more like him and the overall winner, aircraft engineer Emma England. So don’t hide your light under a bushel – put yourself in the spotlight and showcase your talents so we can get more into industry who are just like you.

SPARKS MAGAZINE | WINTER ISSUE 2017 | REGULATIONS

THE IET HELPING YOU SUCCEED IN YOUR STUDIES The Institution of Engineering & Technology (IET) works with the British Standards Institute (BSI) to publish the Wiring Regulations. You’ll come across the Wiring Regulations, known as BS 7671, throughout your career and you’ll need to be familiar with it in order to comply with it.

The IET wants to make sure that students and apprentices working towards a career in the electrical industry are supported. Our aim is to make sure that you have what you need to understand your studies, pass with flying colours and go on to achieve an excellent career in whatever opportunity this fantastic industry provides you.

We also have a Student’s Hub on the IET website. We publish interview videos and technical videos on the Student’s Hub, as well as any news that might be relevant to you. You can also access a forum specifically for the electric industry, so you can talk to experienced electricians about any questions you might have.

Supporting students This is why Steven Devine authored the Student’s Guide to the IET Wiring Regulations and is currently working on another title for students. Steven comes from an educational background, having lectured at Cambridge Regional College before joining the IET. Now, he’s Secretary on Panel C, which is one of four panels that report into the committee responsible for BS 7671. Panel C deals with shock protection, so any related topics are debated by Panel C committee members. Recommendations are made by Panel C to the BS 7671 committee (the committee itself is known as ‘JPEL/64’).

The Student’s Guide to the IET Wiring Regulations explains exactly how the committee works, how BS 7671 is updated, and a variety of topics to help you understand your studies – such as generation and transmission; supply; testing and inspection; and fault finding. The book is available for £19.

While you’re on our site, take a look at Wiring Matters magazine too – you can subscribe for free. We publish articles about decisions made by JPEL/64 that will affect you in your career, as well as general news and job opportunities. But we want to hear from you too! Please contact us at wiringmatters@theiet.org if you have a topic you’d like covered or if you’re interested in a Student College Roadshow.

HYLEC-APL HALO INITIATIVE PROMOTES BEST PRACTICE FOR APPRENTICES Hylec-APL, the Northamptonshire-based specialist supplier of electrical connectors, components and enclosures, has launched a programme aimed at increasing knowledge of electrical wiring safety and encouraging best practice in the industry.

The HALO programme - Hylec Academy Learning Organisation provides classroom materials for trainers and lecturers teaching apprentice electricians studying on day, evening and part-time courses at UK colleges and training centres.

New appointment Hylec-APL has over 30 years’ experience of designing and supplying electrical components to major OEMs, electrical and electronic CEMs, wholesalers and distributors. The HALO programme delivers product samples, videos, booklets and datasheets free of charge to lecturers, and in addition, Hylec has appointed Tony Brogan, an experienced commercial electrician, trainer and electrical business owner, to act as the programme’s ambassador. Part of Tony’s role will be to carry out a number of mini guest lectures to students on request from colleges, entirely funded by HALO.

Tony Brogan

Best practice videos Tony also demonstrates best practice in a series of Hylec videos, which will also be made available for use in the classroom. The first video features a product Hylec introduced to the UK in 2016: the Debox 2 SL, the UK’s first 100% tool-free inline connection / junction box, which has a registered design that includes a 4-pole screw-less push wire terminal block and 100% tool-less assembly. As well as being IP-20 protected and flame retardant to UL94V-0, Debox SL boasts a number of unique safety features, including cable clamps incorporated into the box, a snap shut lid held with a supplied locking clip and rip-off mounting ears that can be used to securely mount the box. Steve Robbins, Sales Director, Hylec-APL comments, “We realised earlier this year that

we wanted to be more involved in raising awareness of safety. Hylec-designed products incorporate features that make them easy for electricians to use in practice and very often they have a higher than usual specification which means they are safer as well. “We decided that if apprentices are given the opportunity to see real-life installations and hear from people in the industry who have a lifetime’s experience, plus others who design the products they will be using in their professional life, this could add an extra dimension to their training and enhance learning. We came up with the HALO programme, which launches in January, when colleges will be invited to request free training materials packs and book Tony for guest lectures, and are expecting a significant response.”  Visit hylec-apl.com

VDE-TESTED STUBBY ELECTRIC SCREWDRIVER MEASURES JUST OVER 10CM IN LENGTH

Electricians are all too familiar with the problem: they often require a very small, short hand tool in cramped worked environments while working or fastening screws on machines or in places such as switch cabinets. Complete safety is the top priority in electrical engineering. Hand tools used in such situations therefore need to be both short and safe.

Wiha now introduces the world's first VDE-certified screwdriver solution of its size in the shape of a Stubby electric bit holder handle for slimBits, also individually tested at 10,000 V AC. With an overall length of just over 10 cm, it ensures complete safety for screw fastening tasks when working in confined spaces.

With the inserted slimBit, this compact screwdriver measures a mere 105 mm in length overall. Also known by its full, correct name the SoftFinish® electric slimVario Stubby, the Wiha Stubby electric consists of two components: the short bit holder handle (SoftFinish® electric slimVario Stubby) and a set of three Wiha slimBits. With the inserted slimBit, this compact screwdriver measures a mere 105 mm in length overall. In its VDEcertified, protection-insulated version, this fastening tool is currently unparalleled in size or length on the market. Christian Hilbert, Wiha Segment Manager explains: "We are pleased to present users with a solution that offers a true advantage and added value: the Stubby electric. It is short enough for special tasks in extremely

tight spaces, yet is also completely safe thanks to its protective insulation. This is exactly what users wanted, as clearly indicated by our work on the market and our long, exhaustive user surveys. Virtually a true gap in the market. In the future, there will be no need for self-created solutions which often compromise safety." The Wiha slimBit system is fully compatible and extends the range of application fields that the Wiha slimFamily is able to cover.

Electric Cables - Science & Principles Covering Outcome 4 of Unit 309 ‘Understand the Relationship Between Resistance, Resistivity, Voltage, Current and Power’. (Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Installing Electro-Technical Systems and Equipment 2357-13 / 91 and EAL unit 08, from the '1605', and the L3 Electrotechnical Qualification '7345').  Resistivity: Electric cables consist of the insulation and the conductor. The conductor is usually made from copper, but can be aluminium where larger cross-sectional-areas may be required. Two facts apply to a conductor:

i) The longer the conductor the greater the resistance. ii) The greater the c.s.a. the lower the resistance.

This can be shown in a simple diagram.

If conductor length is doubled, the conductor resistance is doubled:

r1

r1

c.s.a

r1

R total (Rt) = r1 x 2

Length r1

If the c.s.a is doubled, then the resistance will be halved.

r1 End view

= r1 2

Side view

WORKED EXAMPLE: Let (r1 = 1Ω)

If the conductor is doubled in length then Rtotal (Rt) = 2 x 1 = 2Ω

If the conductor length is increased five times then Rt = 5 x 1 = 5Ω

TRY THIS: Q1. The resistance of 1m of conductor is 0.025Ω. What is the conductor resistance if the cable is 50m long? Rt = Rt = Now consider the cross-sectional-area, (c.s.a): Let (r1 = 1Ω) If the c.s.a is doubled in size then: Rt = 1 = 0.5Ω Remember resistance decreases 2 If the c.s.a is increased six times then: Rt = 1 = 0.1667Ω 6

TRY THIS: Q2. If a conductor has a resistance of 17.8µΩ / mm, determine the resistance of 10m of this conductor if the c.s.a. is 1.5mm2. By using the resistivity formula it is possible to calculate the resistance of the conductor in one move: Rt = ρ x L a Rt = Rt = Rt = Rt =
