Welcome to the Summer Issue of SPARKS Magazine where we go go-karting, competing, husky-sledding, driving and installing, all in one issue! The SPARKS UK Electrical Apprentice of the Year Competition was a nail-biter this year. It’s a good job our competitors were so switched on (excuse the shameless pun) because our judge really ramped it up this year, with live testing taking place at the final. You can read all about the finalists, the judge and how the competition went in this issue. Perhaps we’ll see you there next year? Here at SPARKS Magazine we are huge advocates of the Electrical Industries Charity so when we found out that one of our favourite lecturers Keith Sampson from PETROC was taking part in their Arctic Challenge, we just had to find out how he got on. You can read all about his adventures from page 26. You won’t want to miss it! If you or your college have any charity events taking place that you’d like to share with us, please do pop us an email so that we can join in the fun and help spread the word. Have a crack at the practice exercises towards the back, enter the epic Wiha competition, gawp at the shocking Hall of Shame photos and check out the new features we’ve brought to you this issue. And most importantly, have a great summer!

GOODLIGHT LIGHTS UP LIVERPOOL STREET STATION LED Eco Lights has announced that Network Rail has fitted its Goodlight LED lighting into all 18 platforms and the concourse at London’s Liverpool Street Station, Britain’s third-busiest station with over 66 million passengers annually. The Goodlight LED lamps can easily be retro-fitted into the existing fittings, allowing the relamping to proceed with little disruption. Over 3,500 lights were replaced by two teams of two operatives. They worked from two scissor lifts on a permanent night shift during the five hour window offered by station closing hours over a six month period. Some commuters shared Tweets about the improvement and many of the staff that work at the station expressed appreciation for the improved station environment. GOODLIGHT.CO.UK

This year the SPARKS UK Electrical Apprentice of the Year Competition was so much fun and the Grand Final, which was once again hosted by Bronze sponsor 3M, was the most intense it has ever been. Judge Darren Oates raised the bar super high and live tested it at the end, making it the most difficult test the competition has ever seen. No pressure finalists! As soon as the eight regional finalists arrived at the 3M Customer Innovation Centre on Wednesday 11th April, the two-day challenge to find the overall UK winner began…

The finalists were given ten hours over two days to go head-to-head in an attempt to be crowned the SPARKS UK Electrical Apprentice of the Year. Our Platinum sponsor Schneider Electric once again provided all of the quality materials the students were using in their bays, just like they did in the regional heats, and BASEC provided all of the cable used. Our sponsors also donated some incredible prizes – over £8000 worth, in fact – so there was even more incentive for the competitors to win. The standard of work made marking extremely difficult to judge, so well done to each and every finalist: you were fantastic! If all of this has sparked your interest and you’d like to enter next year, then keep an eye on our website, Twitter, Facebook and Instagram to stay posted on how you can enter the 2019 competition. We’d love to see you there!

SPARKS MAGAZINE | SUMMER ISSUE 2018 | INTERVIEW FEATURE
THE JUDGE'S VERDICT We had a chat with Judge Darren Oates, Product Specialist at EAL and all-round electrical extraordinaire, to get his verdict on this year’s competition and its competitors.
Q1. What did you think about the standard of work that you saw across the whole competition this year?
This was a totally different installation task than the past competitions.A good standard of work was been judged across all of the regional heats. Interestingly the standard did considerably vary across certain regions.
Q2. Where did competitors tend to lose the most marks?
The majority of marks were lost within the installation quality section, for example positioning of components and the general installation of PVC / PVC cable. Poor connections also cost many of the competitors crucial marks.
Q3. What impressed you this year?
The buffet in Northern Ireland at Belfast Metropolitan College! In all seriousness it was every competitor who stepped up to the challenge of competing. This was a difficult task compared to the previous competitions. This is an attempt to integrate some of the World Skills requirements. All competitors have done their representative colleges proud.
Q4. Was there a region than shone in particular this year? From memory, I believe the South West region was the highest scoring region overall.
Q5. What would you like to see from the competitors next year? Pride, take pride in your work, and focus on the task from the word ‘go’. There is no time to dwell as time is so tight. If you are fortunate enough to finish early, go over the installation double checking for any errors.
Q6. What are the top three tips you’d give to future electricians? As mentioned above, have pride in your work: avoid the, “that’ll do” attitude. Never stop learning: continue your learning and development at every opportunity. Always, measure twice and cut once!
INTERVIEW | SUMMER ISSUE 2018 | SPARKS MAGAZINE
QUICK-FIRE QUESTIONS WITH THE JUDGE We thought that he’d put you through your paces enough this year, so we decided to put Darren on the spot instead! Did you think he was a pieand-mash-whilst-satwith-the-cats-at-home kind of guy? Well if you did, then you would be wrong…
HERE ARE DARREN'S REPLIES... Q1. Fish and chips or pie and mash?
Fish and chips.
Q2. Cats or dogs? Dogs.
Q3. Football or rugby?
Football (but also Six Nations rugby).
Q4. Early bird or night owl? Both.
Q5. Tea or coffee?
Either / or.
Q6. Roast chicken or roast beef? Chicken.
Q7. City or countryside?
Lover of both.
Q8. Beer or wine?
I’m teetotal (wink).
Q9. Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings? HP.
Q10. The Beatles or
The Rolling Stones? The Beatles but I’ve seen the Stones.

WEAR YOUR OWN CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEM: TOP TIPS FROM SNICKERS WORKWEAR We’re all looking forward to sunny, warm weather this year. As long as you’ve got plenty of sunscreen to protect exposed skin, it’ll produce a great tan, but it can also add to the health and safety issues onsite by creating an extra hazard for personal wellbeing. So dressing right for the environment you’re grafting in is important – not only for working efficiency, but also for personal comfort and wellbeing. The best workwear for professional tradespeople is designed to create a Climate Control System for your body and that’s what Snickers does. It will help you stay cool to make getting the job done as easy and comfortable as possible. There are many factors that affect how comfortable your work clothes and safety shoes are, including the materials they're made of and whether they're right for the type of work you’re doing.
Your Feet If you’re on the move a lot or want to keep your feet cool, why not try out some of the latest Solid Gear safety trainers that combine lightweight, breathable uppers and composite midsoles for comfort and protection. You can even get socks that will keep your feet cool, dry and ventilated.
Your Legs Shorts are fine in really warm weather and some working environments, but they won't provide protection for your knees and lower legs. Work Trousers made from heavy fabrics will get really uncomfortable and impractical, so think about getting yourself a pair of lightweight work trousers made from a hi-tech fabric that combines comfort with durability.
Your Upper Body Keeping comfortable and dry will keep you working efficiently. Snickers advise that you get yourself topwear like shirts and lightweight jackets – including Hi-Vis vests - that work for you by pulling sweat away from your skin to keep you dry and your body temperature on an even keel. The last thing you need is for your clothes to get really wet through sweat, leaving you feeling uncomfortable and getting cold when the temperature drops.
dressing right for the environment you're grafting in is important...
For more information visit: snickersworkwear.co.uk
GET THE RIGHT FIT To make sure that your working clothes fit your body and the jobs you’ve got in hand, here’s some basic advice: Choose clothes that are not tight, but lightweight and comfortable. Choose ‘Climate Control’ fabrics that work to take sweat away from your skin.
In general, keep in mind that you don't want any clothing that gets in the way of the work you’re doing.
Don’t wear clothes that become uncomfortable and therefore affect your concentration. It’s important to stay alert and to pay attention to how you’re feeling when you’re working hard on a hot day.

TOOLS TO MAKE YOUR LIFE EASIER As an apprentice, it is important to have all the right tools available for the job. KNIPEX, the pliers specialist, is always looking to make the life of the electrician easier and continues to introduce essential tools for every toolbox. Many of its tools save significant space in your toolbox, as well as time and effort on site.
When it comes to crimping, look no further than the KNIPEX Crimp Assortment. The kit (article number 97 90 10) which comes in a sturdy plastic Tanos Mini Systainer®, helps make every crimping job more straightforward.
The T-Loc fastener on the Systainer® allows for one-handed operation – you can open or close with one turn and connect to a second Systainer®. Once connected, the clever system allows you to access all content without disconnecting. The box contains two stackable plastic inserts, with six trays for connectors and a large assortment of end sleeves with a collar.
When it comes to accessing cabinets, lockers and shut-off systems, you could carry around a variety of keys in different sizes. But there is now no need to waste time and energy hunting for the right fit when you can just reach for the KNIPEX TwinKey to open them all.
Kit contents The kit includes auto-adjusting crimping pliers for end sleeves up to 16mm² and an insulation stripper that is self-adjusting on conductors up to 10mm², so you can have both tools available at once. The narrow handle on the crimping pliers and its toggle lever (which maximises transmission of force) make the tool comfortable and secure to use.
Knipex TwinKey benefits This tough little multifunctional tool is designed to meet the highest requirements. Pop it on your tool belt and use it to gain access to cabinets, lockers, cupboards and when controlling heating and ventilation systems, air conditioning or gas and water supply and shut off valves. ENERGY EFFICIENCY & THE 18 EDITION TH
ECA Director of Technical Steve Martin goes through the upcoming changes to the Wiring Regulations.
The official list of changes to the 18th Edition of the IET Wiring Regulations, otherwise known as BS7671, has been announced. This provides us with a general overview of what is expected prior to the 18th Edition being published on 2 July 2018 and coming into full effect on 1 January 2019. Notably, this comes with one considerable draft section missing − Part 8, Energy Efficiency.
...energy efficiency will still play a key role in BS7671...as a condensed 'Informative Appendix'. in BS7671. It will do as an aid in meeting the requirements to Part L of the Building Regulations (conservation of fuel and power) in both England and Wales and conservation requirements of Scotland and Northern Ireland. But it is now a condensed 'Informative Appendix’.
Electrical installations Energy Efficiency, a completely new part and probably one of the most controversial introductions to the 18th Edition, was presented last summer. This came during the Draft for Public Comment (DPC) stage, a period where industry had its say as the revised standard became public for the first time. Until then, BS7671 had only ever been considered as a safety standard in terms of preventing electric shock and fire. Although the proposed Part 8 has disappeared from the Wiring Regulations, energy efficiency will still play a key role
Appendix 17 − Energy efficiency will now provide recommendations for the design and implementation of electrical installations, including installations having local production and storage of energy, for optimising the overall efficient use of electricity.
The recommendations within the scope will apply to the new and modification of existing electrical installations. However, most will not apply to domestic and similar installations.
To many readers, the concept of energy efficient electrical installations is nothing new. Regardless of its inclusion into BS7671, a good design will take into consideration maximum demand, load profiles, power factor correction, location of equipment, controls such as lighting control, harmonics and cable sizing. As the world continues to strive to reduce energy consumption, the UK still has an obligation to implement International and European standards on energy efficiency. As such the intention of Appendix 17 is that, it should be read in conjunction with BS IEC 60364-8-1 to provide a systematic continual assessment of energy efficiency.
There are a range of other changes within the 18th Edition. For more information on these changes, training and other industry updates can be found at eca.co.uk/Project18.

IT’S TIME TO RESET YOUR THINKING Concerned by a high risk of false activations? Fed up of replacing sensitive broken glass from your manual call points? Require a solution for both indoor and outdoor use? Then ReSet your thinking with Safety Technology International!
The EN54-11 ReSet Call Point mimics the feel of breaking glass without the need to replace broken parts, offering the benefits and environmental advantages of a resettable operating element. The appearance of real glass maintains operator deterrence and a visible warning flag confirms activation, with a key allowing the unit to be quickly and easily reset. Offering solutions to both indoor and outdoor challenges, the Waterproof ReSet Call Point conforms to IP67 certification.
STI’s ReSet Call Points have been installed in over 82 stations across the London Underground as part of a successful project aimed at reducing the time stations have to be closed following an activation.
Industry experts As the industry expert in call point protection, STI’s range offers protective covers for MCPs, from integral covers, alarmed to IP56 models. These covers are specifically designed to prevent false alarms whether accidental or malicious. In a recent revision to the BS58391:2017 the British Standard Institute has recommended, in section 20.2 b) of the update, that: “All MCPs should be fitted with a protective cover, which is moved to gain access to the frangible elements.”
Product range To complement the ReSet we have the highly versatile indoor and outdoor push buttons. The StopperSwitch series underwent some exciting changes in 2017. The low / high voltage push buttons can fit any standard UK-type switch socket box and are quick and easy to install with three different types available; key-toreset, momentary and pneumatic.
Further options have been introduced which now include a ‘Standard Function Marking’ label sheet with 12 prevalent operating labels for a variety of uses, ready for self-assembly. Custom label is also available upon request.

A SIMPLE SWITCH TO MAKE LIFE EASIER The WAGO alternative to screw terminals can reduce installation time by 50 percent while increasing reliability. Many electricians have for decades relied on screw terminals, and many still swear by them. They’re relatively cheap and easy to use, and are widely used in junction boxes and cabinets across the UK. However, screw connections will eventually become loose over time due to repeated temperature cycling, and are prone to connection failures due to vibrations and shocks. It may take years to occur, but all screw terminals will eventually come loose if not maintained.
Time consuming Compared to newer alternatives they can also take longer to install. Screwing in and checking countless wire terminations, particularly at the top of ladders or in other hard-to-reach areas, is a tedious job. As installations become more complex with the advent of home automation and smart lighting, electricians have to put in more hours ensuring that every connection is screwed in securely and safely. However, spring pressure connectors offer an alternative solution that can help to make life easier.
Efficient alternative Spring pressure connectors gently apply force to the wire to hold it in place without damaging it and are a low-cost way of practically eliminating screw connection failures, while substantially speeding up installation times. With tool-free operation they are up to 50 percent quicker to connect, freeing up electricians to concentrate on other, potentially more lucrative tasks, as opposed to spending hours repeatedly tightening screws.
Spring pressure connectors typically have stronger resistance against overcurrent, vibration and shock compared to screw connectors, significantly increasing reliability as they are immune to loosening over time. Once connected they don’t require regular re-tightening like a screw connection would. Lever and push-in mechanisms means that the same connector can accommodate several different types of wire, such as solid, stranded or fine-stranded with ferrules.
WAGO first invented spring pressure connection with its Spring Clamp concept back in 1951, and has been helping to push the technology forward ever since.

ARCTIC CHALLENGE When we found out that Keith Sampson from PETROC College had taken on the Electrical Industries Charity’s chilliest challenge, we just had to find out how he’d got on. Don’t know what a quinzee is? Then look no further because you’re about to find out…
FEATURE | SUMMER ISSUE 2018 | SPARKS MAGAZINE

SPARKS: How would you describe what the Arctic Challenge is? KS: It is physical, challenging and you’re put into extreme conditions. We had a day of cross country skiing, a day of snowshoeing and on the final day we did husky-sledding. Husky-sledding was interesting as you go at quite some speed! It was also surprisingly physically challenging because we had to push the sled at times.
It was all amazing but I would probably say that over everything my favourite bit was the general camaraderie.
On the first day we started to build a quinzee, which is a type of igloo. We built up the snow so that it was 2m high on the first day, let it freeze, and then on the second day we dug the inside out so that we could sleep inside it. It was pretty cold! They gave us a roll mat to sleep on and put reindeer skin on top and then we had some really good sleeping bags. The other nights we were in a log cabin.
One part of it was the ice dip challenge, which was optional but I did it. There was a doctor with us all the time and they told us to walk over to it in our swim gear from the cabin so that we acclimatised to the cold a bit before we had to do it! Again – it was pretty cold! We all had to fill in a medical questionnaire and do a training regime before the four days because the trip was physically quite demanding.
SPARKS: Why did you want to embark on this challenge?
SPARKS: What would you say was your favourite bit?
KS: You don’t know if you’ll ever get another chance to do these types of things and I’d never done anything like this before. It was great to have the chance to raise money for such a good cause.
KS: It was all amazing but I would probably say that over everything my favourite bit was the general camaraderie. Everyone bonded well together as we were all there for the same reason. It was especially great because four members of Caz’s family [who we were there to raise money for] were also with us: two of her daughters, Jodie and Rachel, and her sibling and their partner, Cathy and Alan. It really reminded us why it’s important to raise the money.
SPARKS: Had you done any of the activities before? KS: No, I’ve done downhill skiing but I hadn’t done cross country or any of the other things before.
SPARKS: What was the challenging part for you?
most
KS: Probably the ice dip but then it comes down to peer pressure – I probably wouldn’t have done it if I was on my own!
We turned up as strangers and left as friends. We’ve since set up a WhatsApp group and I’m hoping to see them again soon as we will hopefully have a reunion at the Electrical Industries Charity PowerBall later on in the year.

Without a doubt the Electrical Industries Charity are amazing because of the amount of help they provide. SPARKS: What are your thoughts on the Electrical Industries Charity and the work that they do? KS: Without a doubt they are amazing because of the amount of help they provide. The courage of the Dickinson family is awe-inspiring too. We were with her daughters on Mother’s Day whilst we were out there and it became really emotional when they were speaking and I’m not an emotional person usually. It is really worthwhile. KICK-STARTING HOME AUTOMATION
With the rise in popularity of smart technology, the experts at Drayton by Schneider Electric share how smart heating can be the ideal first step into the world of home automation. Research has shown that smart energy is the number one key driver for the connected home, taking priority over security, entertainment and appliances like smart fridges. A smart heating system is often the first step that homeowners take towards home automation, with the integration of further smart devices such as lights and alarms following later. But why is heating proving to be such a popular initial step towards the smart home?
Friendly and familiar While there is still much apprehension around some smart technology, the concept of smart heating is already becoming familiar territory for homeowners. Controlling heating via your phone is now commonplace, as manufacturers and even energy companies themselves develop and promote their own systems.
Fuss-free installation With no need for any re-wiring, smart heating systems are one of the quickest and simplest ways to add automation to any home. Many systems come with industry standard UK wallplates, allowing installers to simply switch a traditional thermostat for a smart one. The system is up and running as soon as the controls are commissioned.
Enhanced convenience Smart heating offers the convenience of controlling a property’s temperature and hot water from a smartphone, anywhere in the world. When plans change, heating schedules can be changed too.
Personalised room control Thanks to innovative additions like smart radiator thermostats, it’s easier than ever to create designated ‘heating zones’, allowing users to take their smart home to the next level and control heating on a room-by-room basis. If you are cold in bed, you can switch the heating on only in the room you are occupying, without the need to heat the whole house - or even get out of bed!
Energy savings Over 80 per cent of domestic energy consumption is used on heating and hot water (DECC 2013) – that’s more than quadruple the amount spent on lights, tumble dryers, washing machines, cookers and televisions put together. Smart heating systems not only offer convenience; they also offer significant cost savings by not wasting energy. When used effectively, a multi-zone system offers the potential to save significantly over a smart thermostat system alone.
THE WISER CHOICE With this in mind, Drayton by Schneider Electric have developed Wiser, an affordable smart heating system with four key components; the Heat Hub, room thermostats, radiator thermostats, and the app. This new offering boasts speedy installation, with an industry standard UK wallplate on the Heat Hub allowing Wiser to be retrofitted in minutes. The system also boasts a simple interface through which multiple users can easily control up to three channels, 16 zones and 32 devices with the use of one intuitive app. Wiser is also compatible with Amazon Echo and Google Home, enabling full voice control.

WHITE OR GREY, TWIN & EARTH? ALWAYS CHECK FOR THE BASEC APPROVAL MARK Background As an apprentice electrician in training, or qualified and working in the UK, you should be familiar with the sheath colour of the two main types of final circuit installation cables, flat twin and earth. Currently these are grey PVC for standard applications, or white for low smoke halogen free, used in higher risk situations.
Historically, cables were sold from different manufacturers and were available variously in grey or white, with no significance attached to the sheath colour. The grey colour was adopted by cable manufacturers to match older lead sheathed flat cables with some manufacturers using a silver-grey PVC. Additionally, twin & earth cable as it was called, was available in red for fire alarms until the early 2000s.
Cable regulations Low smoke requirements would include, for example, properties supporting multiple occupancy, large house conversions into apartments, blocks of flats, offices, schools and hospitals. This particular white sheathed cable, conforming to BS7211, has a low smoke halogen free outer sheath, which reduces smoke emission during a fire. The similar grey PVC cable, conforming to BS6004, is typically used in single domestic and small commercial applications, such as lighting circuits, but specifically in low fire risk areas.
CPR information Under the new CPR reaction to fire regulation, BS6004 PVC cable will generally be available at Class Eca. Low smoke halogen free cable to BS7211 may be available at Eca, or at higher classes, Dca, Cca or perhaps higher. Applications where higher fire performance is needed may therefore need to adopt BS7211 cable rather than BS6004. For further details on CPR information for electricians; www.basec.org.uk/resources/ electricians-guide-to-cpr
...ensure the cable carries both the relevant BS number and a third-party approval mark, such as BASEC.
CABLE TYPE CHECK LIST
For armoured cables, PVC sheathed should conform to BS5467, while low smoke halogen free sheathed cables should conform to BS6724.
There are also other ways to doublecheck what cable you are handling; you can ensure that it carries both the relevant BS number (BS6004 for grey PVC or BS7211 for white low smoke) and also a third-party approval mark, such as BASEC. Cables such as these, used for general domestic and office type use are, colour aside, nominally much the same. One aspect to be aware of is that the white low smoke tends to be stiffer than the grey PVC.

WIRING REGS: DON’T GET IN A TANGLE As all electricians find out, there are training courses and qualifications for almost every area of the electrical industry. But for most, the first qualification that they will probably have to get will be for an update to the Wiring Regulations.
The IET Wiring Regulations (BS 7671) is amended or updated every 3-5 years so that it remains a relevant and current safety standard for LV electrical installations in the UK and many other countries around the world where it is used.
To keep up with industry requirements, the committees responsible are constantly reviewing what is going on in the electrical industry and finding ways to maintain and improve safety standards for electricians to work to.
Getting prepared An electrician in the UK will be expected to carry out work in accordance with the current version of BS 7671. There are various qualifications available that an electrician can gain to demonstrate to potential employers and Certification Bodies, when being interviewed or assessed, that they are aware of the current requirements.
The 18th Edition of the IET Wiring Regulations will come into full effect as of January 2019.
Training for these qualifications can be gained through colleges and training providers and now there is the IET Academy.
The IET Academy online training for BS 7671:2018 saves taking time away from the job, provides interactive learning to help information stick and gives you three full practice exams to work through, getting you ready for your exam.
After completing the course, you can then take your exam at your local exam centre as usual. The 18th Edition of the IET Wiring Regulations is just around the corner (due to be published on the 2nd July) and will come into full effect as of January 2019. BS 7671 is one of the few British Standards that has a transitional period. This means that from publication there will be roughly 6 months that either the current version or the new version can be used. This does not mean that installations can be
installed using two different standards, for example, if a new installation is started using BS 7671 2008 +A3:2015 then the entire installation must be to that standard. The same is true if you are using the 18th Edition. Whether you are new to the electrical industry or became qualified before lighting circuits required a CPC, you will need to work to the current requirements. There’s no better way to demonstrate that you know what you’re talking about than having a piece of paper that says that you do. Visit theiet.org

TRADE SHOW SURVIVAL GUIDE Trade shows have been popular for years now, but when you’re relatively new to the industry you can find yourself staring at an oversized room without a clue about where you should start. You’ll see swarms of electricians carrying branded bags chatting to everyone like they’ve known them forever and it can leave you feeling like you’re the only one in the room who hasn’t been there before. But do not fear: SPARKS Magazine has got you covered. Follow these fool-proof tips on trade show survival and you will become a king of the road (well, show, but you know where we’re going with this…)
FEATURE | SUMMER ISSUE 2018 | SPARKS MAGAZINE
CHOOSE YOUR TRANSPORT WISELY
PREPARE BEFORE YOU GO
You know where these trade shows like to place themselves? Major cities, that’s where. We’re talking London, Manchester, Birmingham, etc. It seems to be a natural inclination to think that public transport would be a fabulous idea because these types of locations are so conveniently accessible but alas, beware! What if it’s more than pens you end up carrying back home? That Hitachi drill you’ve had your eager eye on for months could suddenly appear with a special discount. They could be giving away free mugs, bottles of beer, the kitchen sink…
That exhibition list is created to keep you sane, so use it to the max. Highlight your main stopping points and plan your time by area. This way, if one of your port of calls is busy when you get there, you can check out another one of your priority stalls that are in the same area.
MAINTAIN YOUR ENERGY LEVELS
THROW YOURSELF INTO IT
The common free coffee and bacon roll upon arrival is a sure hit (duh) but don’t let it make you dehydrated when you’ve got all of that schmoozing / networking to do. Stack up on the Lucozade (or similar beverage) before you go so that you are well-equipped. Dehydration deactivated.
This last point probably sounds obvious, but it’s the absolute best way to do it. Don’t be that guy that regrets not having a crack at the darts / van / superbike challenge when he sees that it’s someone he knows who has won the holiday to Florida or van full of tools. People are there to meet people, so have fun and go for it!

HERE’S WHAT YOUR VEHICLE IS TRYING TO TELL YOU Warning lights flag up a number of problems with your vehicle from an oil shortage to an engine fault, but many people are often unaware of what signs mean and what to do if lights do come on. Acting quickly to rectify the problem is important for the safety of the driver, passengers and other road users and for the health of the vehicle, saving you a hefty repair bill or worse - a scrapped car or van. Motoring experts at LeaseVan.co.uk have compiled a list of what vehicle warning lights mean and what to do if they ever turn on so you can be fully prepared. Check out this guide to vehicle warning lights and what to do when they come on:  Visit LeaseVan.co.uk
FEATURE | SUMMER ISSUE 2018 | SPARKS MAGAZINE
ENGINE COOLANT LIGHT
ENGINE LIGHT
If this comes on it means your engine is too hot. Park up and turn the engine off for 30 minutes to allow the car to cool down, check the coolant level and top up if needed. If you don’t need any more coolant, take it to a repair shop to check it over as soon as possible as it could be a bigger problem.
The engine light can come on for a number of reasons, it can be due to a faulty electrical sensor, a misfire, or something else that will change how your engine normally works. Take your car or van to a mechanic to get it checked over. Don’t continue driving it as it could cause more damage.
OIL LIGHT
ESP LIGHT
Ignoring the oil warning light can cause extensive damage to your car. If the light is illuminated it’s because the oil temperature is too high or the oil level or pressure is too low. Stop driving as soon as the light pops on to avoid engine damage and get a garage to check the problem ASAP.
This can be known as the Electronic Stability Light or Traction Control Light and means that your car is losing traction. This light will pop up during snow and rain as these are slippery conditions. Never accelerate hard in these conditions: it’s better to ease off altogether to keep control of the vehicle.
SEATBELT LIGHT
TYRE PRESSURE LIGHT
The seatbelt light indicates when seatbelts aren’t plugged in correctly. Ensure all seat belts are done up properly and this will go off.
The light will illuminate if tyres aren’t at normal pressure or if there is a puncture. Pull over and take a look at the tyres for any wear and tear. If it’s a case of topping up, do it as soon as possible to avoid any damage.
HAZARD LIGHTS
AIRBAG WARNING LIGHT
This is to indicate that your hazard lights are on. Ensure that these are only used when there is an emergency and you need to slow down. If they are on by accident it could cause disruption as people will think there is something wrong with your vehicle.
It’s important to get a faulty airbag looked at as soon as possible as it may not release and protect the driver and passengers during a crash. On the other hand, a faulty airbag could go off at any time causing shock, injury or blocking your view.
ABS LIGHT
BATTERY LIGHT
This light will come on if there are any issues with the anti-lock braking system or if your car is doing a bulb check. If it’s a bulb check then stopping safely and turning the car on and off should turn the light off, but if it remains on it’s best to get it looked at as soon as possible.
This should come on when you turn on your car but if it doesn’t go out after a few seconds then there may be a fault with the electrical system – this could cause you to come to a halt if the battery isn’t working properly. It’s best to get it checked out at the nearest garage as it could be a faulty battery or it could be due to the alternator drive belt braking.
