Welcome to the Summer Issue of SPARKS Magazine where we go go-karting, competing, husky-sledding, driving and installing, all in one issue!

The SPARKS UK Electrical Apprentice of the Year Competition was a nail-biter this year. It’s a good job our competitors were so switched on (excuse the shameless pun) because our judge really ramped it up this year, with live testing taking place at the final. You can read all about the finalists, the judge and how the competition went in this issue. Perhaps we’ll see you there next year?

Here at SPARKS Magazine we are huge advocates of the Electrical Industries Charity so when we found out that one of our favourite lecturers Keith Sampson from PETROC was taking part in their Arctic Challenge, we just had to find out how he got on. You can read all about his adventures from page 26. You won’t want to miss it!

GOODLIGHT LIGHTS UP LIVERPOOL STREET STATION LED Eco Lights has announced that Network Rail has fitted its Goodlight LED lighting into all 18 platforms and the concourse at London’s Liverpool Street Station, Britain’s third-busiest station with over 66 million passengers annually.

The Goodlight LED lamps can easily be retro-fitted into the existing fittings, allowing the relamping to proceed with little disruption. Over 3,500 lights were replaced by two teams of two operatives. They worked from two scissor lifts on a permanent night shift during the five hour window offered by station closing hours over a six month period.

Some commuters shared Tweets about the improvement and many of the staff that work at the station expressed appreciation for the improved station environment.  GOODLIGHT.CO.UK

IET LAUNCHES NATIONWIDE SEARCH FOR YOUNG WOMAN ENGINEER OF THE YEAR The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) has launched its 2018 Young Woman Engineer of the Year Awards (YWE) and is calling on successful young female engineers to enter.

These prestigious engineering industry awards celebrate women working in modern engineering. Recognising and showcasing outstanding female engineers has never been so important.

Statistics from the most recent IET Skills and Demand in Industry survey show that just over one in ten (11%) of the UK engineering and technical workforce is female.

MACMILLAN CANCER SUPPORT UNITES ELECTRICAL INDUSTRY Back for a third year, ‘Just Say the Word’ was supported by more companies than ever before. These businesses put aside their commercial differences to support men living with cancer and their families.

Benchmarx Kitchens and Joinery, CEF, ISG, Mace, Selco Builders Warehouse, telent Technology Services, Topps Tiles, Travis Perkins and Wolseley, joined forces with the charity to raise awareness of the impact of cancer on men and encourage those who need it to access support.

The Electrotechnical Certification Scheme has announced some important changes to the scheme that will take effect from 2019 across England, Wales and Northern Ireland. These new rules will apply to existing cardholders and those wishing to apply to the scheme for the first time.

From 1st January 2019, anyone applying for an Installation or Maintenance Electrician gold card for the first time will be required to sign up to Registered Electrician status, and any existing Installation or Maintenance Electrician gold card holders who have let their card lapse for more than a year will be required to renew as a Registered Electrician.

The finalists were given ten hours over two days to go head-to-head in an attempt to be crowned the SPARKS UK Electrical Apprentice of the Year.

Our Platinum sponsor Schneider Electric once again provided all of the quality materials the students were using in their bays, just like they did in the regional heats, and BASEC provided all of the cable used. Our sponsors also donated some incredible prizes – over £8000 worth, in fact – so there was even more incentive for the competitors to win.

The standard of work made marking extremely difficult to judge, so well done to each and every finalist: you were fantastic!

WINNER! We spoke to the newly-crowned 2018 SPARKS UK Electrical Apprentice of the Year straight after his name was announced at the Grand Final.

Matt Taylor from Aldershot Construction College at the Farnborough College of Technology did exceptionally well in the most difficult task the competition has ever seen. We wanted to find out how it felt to be the overall winner.

SPARKS: How does it feel to be a winner of a UK competition?

MT: I’m ecstatic. I just didn’t see myself winning.

SPARKS: How did you feel when your name was announced as the winner?

MT: I was shocked. I really didn’t think I’d win because the other competitors were great.

SPARKS: Is this the first skills competition you have entered?

MT: Yes, this is the first one that I have entered outside of college.

SPARKS: Why did you want to enter this one?

MT: I wanted to give myself a challenge and I’ve definitely achieved that.

SPARKS: How did you cope with completing the task in the given time?

MT: I managed my time very well and I finished before the time was up.

SPARKS: How did you get on with the other contestants?

MT: I got on with all of them brilliantly, it was

MT: I’ll probably wait until I get home to tell my parents. They’ll probably spread the word. I’m going to show them that big cheque [from Schneider Electric]!

SPARKS: What has been the best part of the competition overall?

MT: Meeting all the lads. We all got together last night after the first day of the competition and that was great.

SPARKS: And what has been the worst?

MT: The waiting for the result.

SPARKS: Do you think you’ll be using more Schneider Electric products in the future?

MT: We’re already using them at work so yes, I probably will.

SPARKS: What’s the main thing that you’ll take away from the whole competition experience?

MT: The knowledge that I can do something that I thought I couldn't.

THE JUDGE'S VERDICT We had a chat with Judge Darren Oates, Product Specialist at EAL and all-round electrical extraordinaire, to get his verdict on this year’s competition and its competitors.

Q1. What did you think about the standard of work that you saw across the whole competition this year?

This was a totally different installation task than the past competitions.A good standard of work was been judged across all of the regional heats. Interestingly the standard did considerably vary across certain regions.

Q2. Where did competitors tend to lose the most marks?

The majority of marks were lost within the installation quality section, for example positioning of components and the general installation of PVC / PVC cable. Poor connections also cost many of the competitors crucial marks.

Q3. What impressed you this year?

The buffet in Northern Ireland at Belfast Metropolitan College! In all seriousness it was every competitor who stepped up to the challenge of competing. This was a difficult task compared to the previous competitions. This is an attempt to integrate some of the World Skills requirements. All competitors have done their representative colleges proud.

Q4. Was there a region than shone in particular this year?

From memory, I believe the South West region was the highest scoring region overall.

Q5. What would you like to see from the competitors next year?

Pride, take pride in your work, and focus on the task from the word ‘go’. There is no time to dwell as time is so tight. If you are fortunate enough to finish early, go over the installation double checking for any errors.

Q6. What are the top three tips you’d give to future electricians?

As mentioned above, have pride in your work: avoid the, “that’ll do” attitude. Never stop learning: continue your learning and development at every opportunity. Always, measure twice and cut once!

ECA Director of Technical Steve Martin goes through the upcoming changes to the Wiring Regulations.

The official list of changes to the 18th Edition of the IET Wiring Regulations, otherwise known as BS7671, has been announced.

This provides us with a general overview of what is expected prior to the 18th Edition being published on 2 July 2018 and coming into full effect on 1 January 2019. Notably, this comes with one considerable draft section missing − Part 8, Energy Efficiency.

...energy efficiency will still play a key role in BS7671...as a condensed 'Informative Appendix'. in BS7671. It will do as an aid in meeting the requirements to Part L of the Building Regulations (conservation of fuel and power) in both England and Wales and conservation requirements of Scotland and Northern Ireland. But it is now a condensed 'Informative Appendix’.

Electrical installations Energy Efficiency, a completely new part and probably one of the most controversial introductions to the 18th Edition, was presented last summer. This came during the Draft for Public Comment (DPC) stage, a period where industry had its say as the revised standard became public for the first time. Until then, BS7671 had only ever been considered as a safety standard in terms of preventing electric shock and fire.

Although the proposed Part 8 has disappeared from the Wiring Regulations, energy efficiency will still play a key role

Appendix 17 − Energy efficiency will now provide recommendations for the design and implementation of electrical installations, including installations having local production and storage of energy, for optimising the overall efficient use of electricity.

The recommendations within the scope will apply to the new and modification of existing electrical installations. However, most will not apply to domestic and similar installations.

To many readers, the concept of energy efficient electrical installations is nothing new. Regardless of its inclusion into BS7671, a good design will take into consideration maximum demand, load profiles, power factor correction, location of equipment, controls such as lighting control, harmonics and cable sizing.

As the world continues to strive to reduce energy consumption, the UK still has an obligation to implement International and European standards on energy efficiency.

As such the intention of Appendix 17 is that, it should be read in conjunction with BS IEC 60364-8-1 to provide a systematic continual assessment of energy efficiency.



A SIMPLE SWITCH TO MAKE LIFE EASIER The WAGO alternative to screw terminals can reduce installation time by 50 percent while increasing reliability.

Many electricians have for decades relied on screw terminals, and many still swear by them. They’re relatively cheap and easy to use, and are widely used in junction boxes and cabinets across the UK. However, screw connections will eventually become loose over time due to repeated temperature cycling, and are prone to connection failures due to vibrations and shocks. It may take years to occur, but all screw terminals will eventually come loose if not maintained.

CEF HOSTS RACE DAY FOR SPARKS UK ELECTRICAL APPRENTICE OF THE YEAR FINALISTS CEF hosted a thrilling race day for finalists in SPARKS Magazine’s UK Electrical Apprentice of the Year competition.

Following the seven regional heats, seven finalists and the runner up who received the highest overall score were invited to an exclusive CEF go karting race day ahead of the Grand Final on 11th - 12th April, to reward them for their success and give them the chance to face off on the track.

On the day, it was North West regional heat winner, Kane Barker of Burnley College, who, following a thrilling race, showed the greatest skill on the track and topped the podium.

Kane was awarded a trophy, a range of tools supplied by Klein Tools, and a supercar driving experience at PalmerSport for a once in a lifetime chance to drive some amazing cars.

“Partnering with SPARKS to sponsor its highly regarded SPARKS UK Electrical Apprentice of the Year competition is a perfect way for CEF to support the younger members of the industry. Well done to Kane and good luck to all the other finalists on 11th and 12th April.”

Kane commented: “It was a really intense race and a very close finish. We all had a great day though, and it was a lot of fun ahead of the Grand Final. It’s exciting to see that young electrical apprentices are being backed and rewarded by leading organisations in the industry, such as CEF and SPARKS.”

SPARKS: How would you describe what the Arctic Challenge is?

KS: It is physical, challenging and you’re put into extreme conditions. We had a day of cross country skiing, a day of snowshoeing and on the final day we did husky-sledding.

Husky-sledding was interesting as you go at quite some speed! It was also surprisingly physically challenging because we had to push the sled at times.

It was all amazing but I would probably say that over everything my favourite bit was the general camaraderie.

On the first day we started to build a quinzee, which is a type of igloo.

We built up the snow so that it was 2m high on the first day, let it freeze, and then on the second day we dug the inside out so that we could sleep inside it. It was pretty cold! They gave us a roll mat to sleep on and put reindeer skin on top and then we had some really good sleeping bags. The other nights we were in a log cabin.

One part of it was the ice dip challenge, which was optional but I did it. There was a doctor with us all the time and they told us to walk over to it in our swim gear from the cabin so that we acclimatised to the cold a bit before we had to do it! Again – it was pretty cold!

We all had to fill in a medical questionnaire and do a training regime before the four days because the trip was physically quite demanding.

SPARKS: Why did you want to embark on this challenge?

SPARKS: What would you say was your favourite bit?

KS: You don’t know if you’ll ever get another chance to do these types of things and I’d never done anything like this before. It was great to have the chance to raise money for such a good cause.

KS: It was all amazing but I would probably say that over everything my favourite bit was the general camaraderie. Everyone bonded well together as we were all there for the same reason. It was especially great because four members of Caz’s family [who we were there to raise money for] were also with us: two of her daughters, Jodie and Rachel, and her sibling and their partner, Cathy and Alan.

It really reminded us why it’s important to raise the money.

SPARKS: Had you done any of the activities before?

KS: No, I’ve done downhill skiing but I hadn’t done cross country or any of the other things before.

SPARKS: What was the challenging part for you?

KS: Probably the ice dip but then it comes down to peer pressure – I probably wouldn’t have done it if I was on my own!

We turned up as strangers and left as friends. We’ve since set up a WhatsApp group and I’m hoping to see them again soon as we will hopefully have a reunion at the Electrical Industries Charity PowerBall later on in the year.

Caz Dickinson spent 15 years working for a large electrical wholesaler until her life changed in the blink of an eye. On the 4 January 2009, Caz collapsed in her home, hit her head on the bathroom floor and was rushed to hospital where she was diagnosed with a Grade 4 brain haemorrhage. She has been left with severe, irreversible brain damage.

The Electrical Industries Charity are aiming to raise £250,000 for the Dickinson family, which will enable them to secure a lasting family home and help with Caz’s care.

Without a doubt the Electrical Industries Charity are amazing because of the amount of help they provide.

SPARKS: What are your thoughts on the Electrical Industries Charity and the work that they do?

KS: Without a doubt they are amazing because of the amount of help they provide.

The courage of the Dickinson family is awe-inspiring too. We were with her daughters on Mother’s Day whilst we were out there and it became really emotional when they were speaking and I’m not an emotional person usually. It is really worthwhile.

SPARKS: What would you say to someone who is considering taking part in one of these challenges?

KS: You only live once – go for it. Take the bull by the horns and do it while you can!

WHERE

Gower College Swansea is a large Further Education college with over 4,500 full time and 10,000 part time learners from across Swansea and neighbouring counties. It operates from six locations across the City and County of Swansea including campuses at Tycoch and Gorseinon.

The Tycoch campus has recently seen the completion of a ÂŁ4 million redevelopment, which has transformed the front of the building into a modern learning and social space. The ground floor boasts a new reception area, common room and retail coffee shop as well as student-centred offices such as admissions, funding and careers guidance.

One of our students, Jay Popham, was named the winner of the Wales regional heat of the SPARKS UK Electrical Apprentice of the Year Competition which was held at the College’s Jubilee Court campus. He then represented Wales in the SPARKS Grand Final in Bracknell on 11/12 April. 

SECTOR-LEADING TRAINING FACILITY LAUNCHED

A new facility has been launched at Gower College Swansea that will offer a sector-leading training environment for electricians working in hazardous conditions.

The Swansea CompEx Training Centre, the result of a collaboration between the College and C&P Engineering Services, has been funded by the Skills Priorities Programme supported by Welsh Government.

Those commencing at Level 1 or 2 will have the opportunity to progress to the next level, with potential options of an apprenticeship, higher education course or employment at the completion of their course.

Courses are delivered in industry standard workshops, enabling students to develop the skills required for a career in the electrical sector.

WHITE OR GREY, TWIN & EARTH? ALWAYS CHECK FOR THE BASEC APPROVAL MARK Background As an apprentice electrician in training, or qualified and working in the UK, you should be familiar with the sheath colour of the two main types of final circuit installation cables, flat twin and earth. Currently these are grey PVC for standard applications, or white for low smoke halogen free, used in higher risk situations.

Historically, cables were sold from different manufacturers and were available variously in grey or white, with no significance attached to the sheath colour. The grey colour was adopted by cable manufacturers to match older lead sheathed flat cables with some manufacturers using a silver-grey PVC. Additionally, twin & earth cable as it was called, was available in red for fire alarms until the early 2000s.

Cable regulations Low smoke requirements would include, for example, properties supporting multiple occupancy, large house conversions into apartments, blocks of flats, offices, schools and hospitals. This particular white sheathed cable, conforming to BS7211, has a low smoke halogen free outer sheath, which reduces smoke emission during a fire. The similar grey PVC cable, conforming to BS6004, is typically used in single domestic and small commercial applications, such as lighting circuits, but specifically in low fire risk areas.

CPR information Under the new CPR reaction to fire regulation, BS6004 PVC cable will generally be available at Class Eca. Low smoke halogen free cable to BS7211 may be available at Eca, or at higher classes, Dca, Cca or perhaps higher.

Applications where higher fire performance is needed may therefore need to adopt BS7211 cable rather than BS6004.

...ensure the cable carries both the relevant BS number and a third-party approval mark, such as BASEC.

CABLE TYPE CHECK LIST

For armoured cables, PVC sheathed should conform to BS5467, while low smoke halogen free sheathed cables should conform to BS6724.

There are also other ways to doublecheck what cable you are handling; you can ensure that it carries both the relevant BS number (BS6004 for grey PVC or BS7211 for white low smoke) and also a third-party approval mark, such as BASEC. Cables such as these, used for general domestic and office type use are, colour aside, nominally much the same. One aspect to be aware of is that the white low smoke tends to be stiffer than the grey PVC.

WIRING REGS: DON’T GET IN A TANGLE As all electricians find out, there are training courses and qualifications for almost every area of the electrical industry. But for most, the first qualification that they will probably have to get will be for an update to the Wiring Regulations.

The IET Wiring Regulations (BS 7671) is amended or updated every 3-5 years so that it remains a relevant and current safety standard for LV electrical installations in the UK and many other countries around the world where it is used.

To keep up with industry requirements, the committees responsible are constantly reviewing what is going on in the electrical industry and finding ways to maintain and improve safety standards for electricians to work to.

Getting prepared An electrician in the UK will be expected to carry out work in accordance with the current version of BS 7671. There are various qualifications available that an electrician can gain to demonstrate to potential employers and Certification Bodies, when being interviewed or assessed, that they are aware of the current requirements.

The 18th Edition of the IET Wiring Regulations will come into full effect as of January 2019.

Training for these qualifications can be gained through colleges and training providers and now there is the IET Academy.

The IET Academy online training for BS 7671:2018 saves taking time away from the job, provides interactive learning to help information stick and gives you three full practice exams to work through, getting you ready for your exam.

After completing the course, you can then take your exam at your local exam centre as usual.

The 18th Edition of the IET Wiring Regulations is just around the corner (due to be published on the 2nd July) and will come into full effect as of January 2019. BS 7671 is one of the few British Standards that has a transitional period. This means that from publication there will be roughly 6 months that either the current version or the new version can be used. This does not mean that installations can be

installed using two different standards, for example, if a new installation is started using BS 7671 2008 +A3:2015 then the entire installation must be to that standard. The same is true if you are using the 18th Edition.

Whether you are new to the electrical industry or became qualified before lighting circuits required a CPC, you will need to work to the current requirements. There’s no better way to demonstrate that you know what you’re talking about than having a piece of paper that says that you do.  Visit theiet.org

That Hitachi drill you’ve had your eager eye on for months could suddenly appear with a special discount.

They could be giving away free mugs, bottles of beer, the kitchen sink…

That exhibition list is created to keep you sane, so use it to the max. Highlight your main stopping points and plan your time by area. This way, if one of your port of calls is busy when you get there, you can check out another one of your priority stalls that are in the same area.





MAINTAIN YOUR ENERGY LEVELS

THROW YOURSELF INTO IT

The common free coffee and bacon roll upon arrival is a sure hit (duh) but don’t let it make you dehydrated when you’ve got all of that schmoozing / networking to do. Stack up on the Lucozade (or similar beverage) before you go so that you are well-equipped.

This last point probably sounds obvious, but it’s the absolute best way to do it. Don’t be that guy that regrets not having a crack at the darts / van / superbike challenge when he sees that it’s someone he knows who has won the holiday to Florida or van full of tools. ENGINE COOLANT LIGHT

ENGINE LIGHT

If this comes on it means your engine is too hot. Park up and turn the engine off for 30 minutes to allow the car to cool down, check the coolant level and top up if needed. If you don’t need any more coolant, take it to a repair shop to check it over as soon as possible as it could be a bigger problem.

The engine light can come on for a number of reasons, it can be due to a faulty electrical sensor, a misfire, or something else that will change how your engine normally works. Take your car or van to a mechanic to get it checked over. Don’t continue driving it as it could cause more damage.

OIL LIGHT

ESP LIGHT

Ignoring the oil warning light can cause extensive damage to your car. If the light is illuminated it’s because the oil temperature is too high or the oil level or pressure is too low.

Stop driving as soon as the light pops on to avoid engine damage and get a garage to check the problem ASAP.

This can be known as the Electronic Stability Light or Traction Control Light and means that your car is losing traction. This light will pop up during snow and rain as these are slippery conditions. Never accelerate hard in these conditions: it’s better to ease off altogether to keep control of the vehicle.

SEATBELT LIGHT

TYRE PRESSURE LIGHT

The seatbelt light indicates when seatbelts aren’t plugged in correctly. Ensure all seat belts are done up properly and this will go off.

The light will illuminate if tyres aren’t at normal pressure or if there is a puncture. Pull over and take a look at the tyres for any wear and tear. If it’s a case of topping up, do it as soon as possible to avoid any damage.

HAZARD LIGHTS

AIRBAG WARNING LIGHT

This is to indicate that your hazard lights are on. Ensure that these are only used when there is an emergency and you need to slow down. If they are on by accident it could cause disruption as people will think there is something wrong with your vehicle.

It’s important to get a faulty airbag looked at as soon as possible as it may not release and protect the driver and passengers during a crash. On the other hand, a faulty airbag could go off at any time causing shock, injury or blocking your view.

ABS LIGHT

BATTERY LIGHT

This light will come on if there are any issues with the anti-lock braking system or if your car is doing a bulb check. If it’s a bulb check then stopping safely and turning the car on and off should turn the light off, but if it remains on it’s best to get it looked at as soon as possible.

This should come on when you turn on your car but if it doesn’t go out after a few seconds then there may be a fault with the electrical system – this could cause you to come to a halt if the battery isn’t working properly. It’s best to get it checked out at the nearest garage as it could be a faulty battery or it could be due to the alternator drive belt braking.
