Mission Regional Medical Center
Mission Regional Medical Center (MRMC), a member of Prime Healthcare Foundation, has earned a reputation for being one of the most advanced and well-renowned hospitals in terms of technology and infrastructure.
As a community-based, non-profit hospital, MRMC lives by its mission and values every day as it serves the people of the Rio Grande Valley. Providing patients and families with the highest quality care is Mission Regional’s top priority, and every award we’ve received tells the story of a life touched by our physicians, nurses and staff. Since joining Prime Healthcare Foundation in 2017, it is evident that MRMC has grown and improved at unprecedented rates. Alongside our sister hospitals, Harlingen Medical Center and Knapp Medical Center, being a member of Prime has heightened our standards and our service to all community members. MRMC has received many awards and accolades. For the second year in a row, MRMC has received Fortune/IBM Watson Health’s “100 Top Hospital” recognition along with the Everest Award. The Everest Award recognizes MRMC’s rate-ofimprovement over the last five years.

Such recognition is only earned through hard work and endless commitment. Our hospital’s physicians and staff members work together to achieve a common goal of making our patients the number one priority. MRMC is also a recipient of the Healthgrades 2021 Patient Safety Excellence Award. Healthgrades is recognized as the leading marketplace for connecting patients and providers. This distinction places MRMC in the top 5-10% of all short-term acute care hospitals

reporting safety data as evaluated by Healthgrades. MRMC’s latest technology acquisition is the introduction of the Nuclear Medicine Gamma Camera Scanner NM830. This state-of-the-art technology is the first of its kind in the Rio Grande Valley. This new scanner is capable of running diagnostic studies of body functions, such as cardiac studies, in a much shorter amount of time and with a higher-level image quality which is better for the patient. Such highquality images provide new and unique
information that often cannot be obtained using past imaging procedures. This new piece of equipment is also capable of identifying disease in its earliest stages; something extremely beneficial to the safety of our patients. Mission Regional Medical Center is proud to offer the best quality of healthcare. It is our privilege to treat patients with care close to home. We look forward to continuing our 65-year legacy of service today and for generations to come.

“I Feel Like My Old Self Again” – Gary Bergstrom
Retired farmer has innovative TAVR procedure – a less-invasive way to treat severe aortic stenosis. AN ER VISIT ON NEW YEAR’S DAY January 1, 2019 was not the “happy new year” that Gary Bergstrom and his wife, Linda, were expecting. The native North Dakotans are “Winter Texans” who were returning to the McAllen area after a holiday getaway. “I’ve had heart attacks before,” Bergstrom says about his symptoms that day, “and I thought I was having another one.” As luck would have it, the closest emergency room was South Texas Health System Heart, a facility recognized as being among the nation’s best in cardiac care. Once there, Bergstrom was diagnosed with full congestive heart failure, which means his heart just wasn’t pumping enough blood to meet his body’s needs. ➤
Despite his diagnosis, the retired farmer was impressed with the level of care he received. “I was treated with such care,” he says. “I come from a rural area in North Dakota that has a small, small hospital,” he adds, “South Texas Health System Heart treated me with the same kind of personal attention and care I would expect from a much smaller facility. It’s just a wonderful place.”
EXTREME FATIGUE CONTINUES FOR THE ONCE-ACTIVE FARMER Unfortunately, Bergstrom’s symptoms persisted in the months that followed. “I had a number of procedures, including stents and balloons,” Bergstrom says, “but there were continuing concerns.” Symptoms like extreme fatigue were affecting his quality of life. “I could hardly walk across the street,” Bergstrom adds. “I slept a lot and I could hardly even dry myself off after a shower. I was just out of wind.” These symptoms led him to South Texas Health System Clinics’ Federico Azpurua, MD, FACC, a board-certified interventional cardiologist with expertise treating structural heart disease like Bergstrom’s.
AN INNOVATIVE PROCEDURE OFFERS NEW HOPE Dr. Azpurua determined that Bergstrom was an ideal candidate for a Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) procedure (see sidebar). While valve replacements are typically done via open-heart surgery, the TAVR procedure is accomplished through a small incision. “With open-heart surgery, you’re making a long cut in the chest and fracturing the sternum so, of course, recovery is going to be much longer,” Dr. Azpurua explains. “With TAVR, the procedure is done through a very small incision. It is much faster and less painful than traditional open-heart surgery and patients can be up and walking the same day.” Recovery is easier as well. In fact, according to Dr. Azpurua, “Recovery is basically immediate. Patients are typically able to get back to regular life after a couple of days, compared to weeks or months following traditional surgery.” *Individual results may vary
How TAVR Works During the minimally invasive
TAVR surgery, performed at South Texas Health System Heart, the cardiologist replaces the heart valve without open-heart surgery and without removing the diseased valve. TAVR is performed while the heart is beating, therefore, there is no need for a heart-lung machine. A TAVR valve is made of biological material and is supported with a metal stent. A catheter is inserted through an artery in the leg and then guided through the arteries into the pumping chamber of the heart under direct guidance imaging. The catheter may also be introduced through an artery
A RETURN TO THE LIFE HE LOVES As for Bergstrom, he couldn’t be happier with both the TAVR procedure and the capable care he received from his cardiologist. “Dr. Azpurua is a wonderful man,” he says. “I was treated with such care. I just can’t believe they can do what they do.” Best of all, Bergstrom is back to the life he loves. “I’m a farmer,” he says, “that’s what I do. I just love nature and I love being outdoors.” Thanks to the innovative TAVR procedure, Bergstrom looks forward to spending more quality time outside in the years ahead. n
in the chest or directly through the aorta. The heart valve is compressed and placed on a balloon catheter. The valve is positioned inside the diseased aortic valve. The balloon valve is then inflated to secure the valve in place. This enables the new valve to take over the original valve’s function, allowing oxygen-rich blood to flow efficiently from the heart to the rest of the body.

WHAT THE!~

I am super excited to begin getting out again and socializing in person. How can I politely ask someone if he/she is vaccinated?

intended to encourage others to get vaccinated, it is not rude.
Or, is it that you are just curious? If you are just curious, it is probably better not to ask. But, if you are genuinely concerned about safety issues, it is ok to ask if someone is vaccinated if you plan to interact with them.
vaccinated. Is it rude to post a vaccine selfie on social media?
However, if you are trying to show off or shame those who decide against getting vaccinated, I believe that would be rude, and I would recommend you refrain from doing it.
How can I reconnect with a friend I haven’t talked to since before the pandemic? I need help getting back out there. I think we all feel that way a bit. The best way to get back out there is to begin the conversation with those who you miss interacting with. Be honest and truthful. Let people know that you have missed visiting with them and that you would like to schedule a get-together soon.

Among the collections include items related to the Plan de San Diego, several land title records and numerous photographs that could be considered one of the largest photo collections in the Rio Grande Valley. However, sometimes an archivist can come across a photo or document that was not yet processed for preservation. Here’s a story from Kelly about one of those collection items: When I started as archivist at the museum in 2017, I had a temporary

office space in the collections workroom, which included a shelf of mystery items that needed to be processed. As I became more comfortable in my role, I slowly began to work my way through those items on the shelf. One of the items was a rolled document with no accompanying information. I discovered it was a certificate appointing a Dixon H. Kennett as postmaster for Mercedes, signed by Postmaster General Frank Hitchcock
and President William Howard Taft. It was dated Oct. 4, 1912. The signatures, including that of Taft, all appear to be genuine signatures and not just stamps. For months I had been working away having no idea that there was a hundred-year-old presidential signature right behind me. This is why I love being an archivist. You never know what pieces of history will pass through your hands.
