WHAT THE!~
ETIQUESTIONS Dr. Barbara Baggerly-Hinojosa
I have been invited to attend a Spring wedding, and I am hoping you can give me some advice as to what to wear. This is such a great question. First, it is important to know the level of formality for the wedding you are attending. One great way to determine the dress code, without asking the couple, is to check out the location of the wedding and consider the time of day the wedding will take place. You can plan for more formal as the time gets later in the day. Spring often calls for a less formal aesthetic anyway, so explore different colors and patterns, especially if it is an outdoor wedding. Generally, if the couple is planning a black-tie wedding, they will state that on the invitation. Otherwise, pick a colorful and pretty dress for women and a light-colored suit for men.
What do you do if you are not drinking wine but attending an event with wine glasses on the table. Is it ok to turn your glass upside down? It is ok not to drink wine at an event. Just don’t make a big deal of saying you don’t drink. Simply place your fingertips on the rim of the glass and say, “Not today, thank you.” This implies no judgment of those who wish to drink wine.
I recently attended a gala event. A friend of mine was talking on her phone, and she was using the speaker. Is it ok to talk on a speakerphone when you are at an event? The general rule is not to use speakerphones unless you are in your private office or other private space. Always alert the person you are speaking with that others are present and can hear.

ANNOUNCEMENT!
INTRODUCING:
PE T LIFE ST YLE S OF THE RIO GR ANDE VALLE Y
When I sat down to write this introduction to our newest monthly section titled SOCIALTAILS, I was not alone. Tucked snuggly behind me is our oneyear-old cat, Potato. Yes, that’s a goofy name, but it fits her perfectly. She’s our COVID kitty, rescued after hiding out in the engine of a friend’s car and ending up 15 miles from who knows where. She has been a constant companion during these crazy months of working from home, not to mention photobombing my zoom meetings. Pets like Potato have inspired us at SOCIALIFE to dedicate an entire section to animals in the RGV.
This month we’re focusing on Animal Welfare Heroes, individuals who have selflessly championed the care and wellbeing of stray, abused, and abandoned animals. These inspiring people take loving your pet to a whole new level. In the coming months, you can read about dog-friendly parks and restaurants, top vets and groomers, therapy pets, service animals, building your own catio, and much more. And we’re not stopping there - SOCIALTAILS is also on SOCIALmedia. Soon you can share photos of you and your pets SOCIALTAILing.

DR. ROBERT RAMOS with Addy Palm Valley Animal Society Board Member Nolana Animal Hospital – Veterinarian
After completing his Veterinary degree at Texas A&M (the only Texas Vet school at the time), Dr. Robert Ramos came home to the Rio Grande Valley. A native of McAllen, Dr. Ramos knew that he was needed here. The shortage of vets across the state is even more prominent in the RGV, where the situation is extreme. Dr. Ramos started helping out at Palm Valley shortly after returning to McAllen, hoping that he could provide some relief to the burgeoning stray population. As a board member, he focuses on educating the community, such as why it is so Do right by the animals. important to spay and neuter your cats and dogs.

ASHLI GARZA with Sundae Luv Us Mutts – Founder Real Estate Appraiser
When the next-door neighbor’s three puppies stopped visiting, she hoped they had all gone to good homes. Unfortunately, two had broken legs from being hit by cars and could no longer scurry under the fence to spend their day with Ashli. That was the first of many rescues Ashli has made over the past 15 years. Luv Us Mutts was officially founded as a non-profit in 2017 and is a rescue transport, which means animals are rescued, vetted, and fostered until they can be transported to a forever home. Ashli works out of her home, and every day she either finds an animal needing care or is called to help an animal who is abandoned or abused. She then begins begging for someone to foster the animal. Fostering can be for a few days or a few weeks; it is a way volunteers can provide short term help. Every day is a struggle to find

BARBARA GUERRA with Reecie
Palm Valley Animal Society Advisory Board ARRI Fitness, McAllen – Owner & Managing Partner
These innocent animals depend on people. They deserve to be valued.
After moving from Iowa to the RGV more than two decades ago, Barbara saw animals out on the road and packs of dogs wandering around. It bothered her from day one. Animals in the RGV needed champions, so she begged her friend, Charlie Meyer, to let her join the board of the RGV Humane Society (later to become Palm Valley Animal Society). Charlie was reluctant and warned her, this is a hard board to serve on. Seventeen years later, Barbara’s passion has not waned. This year, she will be the 2022 Puppy Love Gala Honoree.
SONIA VENECIA with Trinkle
Yaqui Animal Rescue – CEO and Founder
Rescuing animals has been a passion for Sonia all her life. But in 2004, when she had the opportunity to buy back her grandparent’s 80-acre ranch in Sullivan City, she knew she could do more to help the most needy and unwanted animals in the RGV. She named it Yaqui to honor her grandmother’s ancestors, the Yaqui Indians. Yaqui is a strict no-kill rescue center that helps large and small animals. There are currently over 250 animals at Yaqui, including horses, cows, pigs, rabbits, dogs, and cats. Sonia’s next goal is to open a spay and neutering clinic that could serve as many as 150 animals with just one vet. Yaqui is a non-profit wholly supported by private donors.
It’s not difficult to be kind to animals.

NON-PROFIT SPOT LIGHT
YAQUI ANIMAL RESCUE SAFE HAVEN FOR RGV ANIMALS Nestled in a cul-de-sac in the outskirts of Sullivan City, Texas, resides a safe haven for abused and neglected animals of the Rio Grande Valley, Yaqui Animal Rescue. Yaqui is an 80-acre ranch that houses over 200 animals from all walks of life, including dogs, cats, horses, pigs, ducks, roosters, and opossums. “We’re a little different than most animal rescue’s in the RGV,” said Sonia Venecia, Yaqui Animal Rescue Founder, and CEO. “Our no-kill shelter welcomes more than dogs and cats; we have a whole ranch to welcome different species of animals that need our help.” The 501 C3 non-profit is committed to rescuing, vetting, rehabilitating, and finding loving homes for all fourlegged—and sometimes two and three-legged—friends. “It’s a daily battle,” said Venecia. “Every day we get a call about an animal who has been dumped on the side of the road, on the brink of passing. Our work is never done, but we do it because if we don’t, who will?” Yaqui is usually the first call people make when they see a hopeless animal on the street. Yaqui hopes to change the way the RGV sees animal welfare.
46
“We hope to educate our citizens about how important it is to be responsible pet owners,” said Venecia. “A lack of spaying and neutering your pets is a big issue in this area as there is an influx of abandoned pets. Additionally, making sure you vet your pet annually to avoid painful yet avoidable viral diseases like parvo and distemper is a message that needs to be pushed more.” Venecia says looking out for the animals of the RGV is a community issue. “If we can all come together to improve the lives of these animals, we will help the issues our Yaqui team faces every day,” said Venecia. “Together, we can do more.” To learn more about Yaqui Animal Rescue and how you can help, visit Yaqui Animal Rescue.com and follow their social media. INAUGURAL PUPPY LOVE GALA HONOREE:
Barbara Guerra
More than twenty years ago, Barbara Guerra moved to the Rio Grande Valley from Iowa – sight unseen – to take a teaching job in a local elementary school. Palm Valley Animal Society, in collaboration with Petco Love, Heal House Call Veterinarian, and other local and national companies, recently supported a three-day vaccination and microchipping event free of charge to Valley pet owners—a huge win for more than 2,000 of our furry friends in the Rio Grande Valley. Her involvement with Palm Valley Animal Society started 17 years ago when she practically begged Charlie Meyer to let her join the Board of Directors. Charlie was skeptical and wasn’t sure Barbara was up for the challenge. But she’s proven his initial hesitation wrong every day since. Barbara has been involved at almost every level, from the secretary to the president, and chairing the annual fundraising gala, Puppy Love. “While serving on the Board has been fulfilling, there were many difficult days
as the organization endeavored to make significant changes,” Guerra stated. “It took the vision of a group of people who all had the same desire to save animals and make our community a better place for them to live. I’m proud to be honored for my service, but it has taken a village to get to where we are.” LEADING BY ACTIONS While Barbara took on the challenge of serving Palm Valley, she also had two children, twins Trey and Aubry, to raise. Now that they are in their twenties, Barbara knows she instilled the importance of not just having but demonstrating love and compassion for all beings—human and animal. “As young children, I saw by their actions that they truly exhibited those qualities,” recalls Guerra proudly. Being involved in animal welfare has brought Barbara tremendous joy, and she admits a few tears. “I love the quote, ‘the
13TH ANNUAL PUPPY LOVE

Every dollar raised goes to expanding and enhancing programs from adoption, rescue, foster care, pet pantry, microchip clinics, the Community Cat vProgram, or any other vital programs provided by Palm Valley for the animals and the community. Palm Valley Animal Society, in collaboration with Petco Love, Heal House Call Veterinarian, and other local and national companies, recently supported a threeday vaccination and microchipping event free of charge to Valley pet owners—a huge win for more than 2,000 of our furry friends in the Rio Grande Valley.

best views come after the hardest climb,’” Guerra reflects. “My desire is always to keep climbing.” The mission of lifesaving at Palm Valley is vital because beyond just helping an animal in need, they are giving an animal a chance to find their voice and get a second chance to become a pet beyond the wall of the shelter. “It is like handing them the keys to start a new life, knowing second chances are hard to come by,” Guerra said. Many people say that they soon discover it is not the pet who was rescued but themselves when adopting a shelter pet. They become the benefactor of an unconditional love they never knew existed. The Palm Valley Community congratulated Barbara Guerra on being the inaugural Puppy Love honoree for her long-time commitment and devotion to animal welfare. “Barbara truly is a superhero for animals,” said Saul Sanchez, Palm Valley Board of Directors Vice President and this year’s Puppy Love co-chair. “She has the biggest heart.”
Barbara Guerra has been the proud pet parent of eight dogs and thirteen cats. Every single one of them has a place in her heart, but the bond she shares with Reecie, her schnauzer mix from Palm Valley, is undeniable. Reecie only had two days left to be adopted, and no one had shown any interest in her. “While most people see her big silly ears first, it is really her eyes that do all the talking, and that day she spoke to me. Reecie has been with me every day since, and she still looks at me as though she can see clear through to my soul,” Guerra remarked. “She is almost thirteen now, and I have no idea how much longer I will have the privilege of having her in my life, but one thing I know for sure, love has no expiration date, and it fills my heart simply having loved Reecie.”

WHAT THE!~
PETIQUETTE Dr. Barbara Baggerly-Hinojosa
I just moved into a new apartment complex, and I am learning where I can walk my dog daily. What is the number one etiquette rule I should remember when walking my precious dog? The number one etiquette rule is scoop your poop. Bring several bags on your walks to be sure you have enough. If you run out, either come back and clean it up later or ask another walker if they have a bag to spare.
I have always wondered what the rule is when strangers are around my dog. What should I keep in mind? I am very pleased with the fact you are asking this question. You should really only let your dog greet a stranger if they ask. The same rule applies if you see another dog and owner approaching. Ask first and respect the other’s response.
I love my dogs, but they are so spoiled! I never really trained them on how to behave when we have visitors at our home. What is your advice for me when my dogs behave badly when visitors are visiting? First of all, be aware of other people’s feelings. If your dog does something to upset someone (jumping up, barking, etc.), apologize to your visitor and take measures to prevent the situation from reoccurring. You love your pets, but your visitors may not.
Barbara Baggerly-Hinojosa, Ph.D. is a wife, mother, and educator living in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas. She is a graduate of Our Lady of the Lake University with a Ph.D. in Leadership Studies. In addition, she holds an Associate of Arts degree in Education from McLennan Community College, Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies from the University of Texas – Pan American, and a Master of Arts in Educational Supervision from the University of Texas – Pan American. Dr. Baggerly-Hinojosa’s current research is focused on servant leadership, gender issues in leadership, and leadership communication. www.leadershipempowermentgroup.com

Mystery Photographs
Remain Unsolved at the Museum of South Texas History by Kelly Francis-Love, archivist at the Museum of South Texas History
One morning in 1981, staff arrived to work to find a box of photos left on the museum’s doorstep. There was nothing included with the photos—no indication of who left them and no identification of who the people were in the photos. The images appeared to be from the late 1800s to the early 1900s. They were added to the museum’s collection, but their origins remain a mystery. Instead of letting these images sit idle in storage, museum staff uses them to start conversations. Each of these photos depicts someone’s child, sibling, or spouse—they all have stories to tell. Sadly, these stories are lost to history. Some of these photos have been used in various Mystery Galleries
WWW.SOCIALIFERGV.COM
presented by the museum, hoping that someday someone will be able to tell us about them. Today, the museum has policies to ensure they are not overwhelmed with unidentified items. A member of the Archives and Collections team must approve all donations. The team makes sure that donated items fit the museum’s mission, that they are not duplicates of items they already have, and try to get as much information about the origins of the donation as possible. If an unidentified box were to be left on the doorstep now, it could not be accepted into the collection. There will always be historical mysteries. However, with your help, the museum can solve many of them and ensure that the stories
of South Texans are preserved for generations to come.
How can you make sure your stories are not lost as well? Here are some simple things you can do. If you have physical copies of photos, write information on their backs in pencil. Include full names, dates, and locations. For digital images, save the file under a name that includes names, dates, and places or add it to the photo’s properties. You could even create a separate document with all the details, but you need to make sure that document is always linked to that digital image. These few simple steps can make a world of difference in preserving your family history.
