WHAT THE!~

ETIQUESTIONS Dr. Barbara Baggerly-Hinojosa

It is vacation time, and I have always wondered if there is such a thing as hotel hallway etiquette? If so, what is the most important thing to be aware of? Actually, there is such a thing as hotel hallway etiquette! I would say that the most important thing to remember is that you are not alone in the hotel. When walking down the hallway, be mindful that people are in their rooms and probably can hear you pretty clearly. Try to reserve conversations for when you are in your room and be aware of the noise your luggage and shoes make. Just try to be as quiet as you can.

I am traveling this summer, and I always wonder about who gets to use the armrest on the airplane? What a great question! The armrest located between seats on an airplane is for both passengers seated next to it. Just be mindful of your neighbor, and don’t take up the entire armrest. Either choose to place your arm toward the front or the back of the armrest but allow room for your neighbor to use it too.

I love to wear hats! Especially in the summer. Is it ok to keep my hat on when I enter a building? Summer is the perfect time for hats, and they are quite popular and useful. The general rule is that men remove their hats when entering a building, but women can keep them on. I always say that you should assess the situation. If the building is professional such as an office, you should remove your hat. But if you are entering a beachside restaurant, hats can remain on.

Barbara Baggerly-Hinojosa, Ph.D. is a wife, mother, and educator living in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas. She is a graduate of Our Lady of the Lake University with a Ph.D. in Leadership Studies. In addition, she holds an Associate of Arts degree in Education from McLennan Community College, Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies from the University of Texas – Pan American, and a Master of Arts in Educational Supervision from the University of Texas – Pan American. Dr. Baggerly-Hinojosa’s current research is focused on servant leadership, gender issues in leadership, and leadership communication. www.leadershipempowermentgroup.com

EXCELLENCE SHINES BRIGHT

AT MCALLEN ISD Since 1915, the McAllen Independent School District has proudly served the community of McAllen. From a small one-room, white framed structure with 20 students to a district with five nationally ranked high schools, McAllen ISD strives to provide students with a nurturing and empowering environment. Even with the challenging times of the past few years, McAllen ISD has risen to the occasion, receiving recognition across the state and nation.

BEST IN TEXAS! McAllen ISD named Best Large District in state awards Some say it’s lonely at the top. But McAllen ISD is happy to be there after being named the Best Large District in Texas at the 20th annual H-E-B Excellence in Education awards. Along with the accolades, H-E-B awarded McAllen ISD $100,000 for being the top winner. “We are entrepreneurs of the human spirit,” McAllen ISD Superintendent Dr. J.A. Gonzalez said on behalf of the district. The district was also a finalist for School Board Leadership and the Rising Star-Elementary category (McAuliffe Elementary teacher Mayela Canales).

Eight Straight Years! All five McAllen ISD high schools nationally recognized Being ranked brings to mind a slew of superlatives - the best, the most, the highest. For McAllen ISD, these terms come regularly and frequently. This is the eighth straight year McAllen ISD has had its high schools recognized by either U.S. News & World Report or The Washington Post as part of the “Best Public High Schools” in America rankings. The McAllen ISD high schools include three traditional campuses: McAllen Memorial High School, James “Nikki” Rowe High, and McAllen High School. In addition, the district is home to Achieve Early College High and Lamar Academy. Achieve Early College High is a two-time national Blue Ribbon Award winner, including 2021, and is ranked in the top 50 (No. 48) of 1,992 high schools in Texas. That places them in the top 2.5 percent in the state. In the nation, they come in at No. 278. Lamar Academy is home to the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme — a world-renowned learning framework. Students can earn an IB diploma in addition to their high school diploma. In fact, students with an IB Diploma can get a minimum of 24 credit hours at any state

university in Texas. In 2001, McAllen ISD became the first district in the Rio Grande Valley to offer the IB Diploma Programme. Historically, McAllen ISD students have earned the IB diploma with a success rate of 93.1 percent – one of the highest rates in the world. “[These achievements] reflect a true team effort,” Gonzalez said. “It is great to see the hard work and dedication of our students, teachers, and staff be recognized on a national stage. It speaks to the resilience of our community that, despite the challenges presented by a global pandemic, all five schools continued to grind and push on for the sake of our children.” The top-ranked schools have a high rate of students who scored above expectations in math and reading state assessments, passed college-level exams, and graduated in four years. The U.S. News High School Rankings include data on nearly 24,000 public high schools in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. In addition to traditional high schools, the rankings encompass charter, magnet, and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) focused schools.

This year, McAllen ISD named Celeste Lopez of Fields Elementary and Lydia Ana Martinez of the Instruction & Guidance Center as district winners.

McAllen ISD Points of Pride! • State ‘A’ rated school district since 2018 • Post-secondary Readiness Distinction 3 years in a row • High schools ranked among America’s Best Schools by US News & World Report • Texas Elementary Teacher of the Year 2021-22 • Best Large District in Texas, H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards, 2022 • H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards State Finalist, School Board Leadership, 2022

SUPERINTENDENT’S GOLF & FISHING TOURNAMENTS a Big Hit for Kids!

McAllen ISD is always looking to go the extra mile for kids. That’s the purpose of the Superintendent’s Golf Tournament and Fishing for Kids Tournament. Working in partnership with McAllen

Education Foundation and STARS Scholarship Fund, the district is able to raise money to help open pathways for high school students to attend college. This year alone, these tournaments have raised more than $140,000!

McAllen ISD Presented ITT State Health Award In May, McAllen ISD was recognized for its attention to fitness and health with a state award from It’s Time Texas (ITT) Community Challenge. For the second straight year, the district finished first in the Medium School District category across the state in the annual health challenge by earning nearly 2.4 million points. The It’s Time Texas Community Challenge is a statewide effort to improve health and wellness by pitting communities and school districts against each other in a friendly competition. The

City of McAllen was also recognized after it took first in its category (Large Community) for the fifth straight year with more than 3.76 million points. “McAllen ISD’s focus is not just on the academic side of students but the physical, social and emotional side as well,” Gonzalez said in March when the results were released. “Our parents, teachers, and staff all came together to participate in this worthwhile campaign.”

COMMUNITY HISTORY

Taking Care of Your Photographs by Kelly Francis-Love, archivist at the Museum of South Texas History

The Margaret H. McAllen Memorial Archives at the . Museum of South Texas History is home to thousands of photographs. Staff members are responsible for making sure all photos are well taken care of. How do they do that? Each photo in the collection is assigned an identification number. It is then placed in an archive-quality polyester sleeve and an acid-free folder. The identification number and a brief description is written on the folder, and then the folders are stored in an archival box. Each box and each photo are documented on a finding aid, so they are easy to keep track of. This process can be easily replicated at home. Archival quality storage supplies are

readily available online or at art supply or craft stores. Look for products labeled acid-free, archival, or say that they have passed the P.A.T. (Photographic Activity Test). Identification of your photos is a key step in the process. While you may know the people in the image now, future generations may not. Label the back of your photos with either pencil or a pen with archival ink. Use the “who, what, where, when” formula to identify people, places, and dates. Make sure to include full names.

Once you have curated your collection, use the following tips for storage—store at a low temperature and low relative humidity. If you are not comfortable, your photos are not either. Store photos up off the floor to keep them safe in case of flooding or water leaks. If you want to keep your photos in

an album to be viewed frequently, avoid self-stick albums or any kind of glue. Glues contain substances that will cause photos to deteriorate over time. Do not bind with rubber bands, staples, or paper clips. These can also cause deterioration or scratches to the photos. Finally, do not display original images. If you have a favorite

photo you would like to display, use a duplicate and keep the original in a safe environment. Light will break down images over time. If you have questions about preserving your photos or have photos you would like to donate to the museum, please contact Archivist Kelly Francis-Love at kfrancis-love@mosthistory.org.

The Call of the Forest in the City By Colleen Hook, Manager of Quinta Mazatlan

Today, more than half of the population lives in cities.

the air by as much as 10 to 20 degrees.

10 BENEFITS OF TINY FORESTS IN OUR CITIES

1.

Native Trees beautify our cities

By 2050 it is estimated that more than 6 billion people, or twothirds of the population, will live in cities. They will need forests for both physical and mental health.

Providing children and families access to forests encourages physical exercise in the great outdoors. Taking a walk in the woods is a great way to recharge one’s batteries by reducing stress.

2.

Native Trees clean the air — take in carbon dioxide

3.

Native Trees support birds & other wildlife

4.

Native Trees are important for modern medicine & research

5.

Native Trees improve human health

As air pollution becomes a major health risk, city trees can serve as filters, removing pollutants from the air. Trees also help control temperatures. Cities are slowly becoming cemented and thus creating “heat island” problems. Trees placed in cities can provide shade and are known to cool

Around the world we are losing millions of trees daily as our population continues to grow. In order to reverse this trend, the value of trees must be better understood. Start by taking a walk in the woods and connecting to our natural heritage.

6.

Native Trees mitigate urban flooding

7.

Native Trees increase property values

8.

Native Trees cool our homes, streets & cities

9.

Native Trees improve the quality of life — attracting businesses & families to the region

10. Native Trees are sacred

AREA HOSPITALS COMPETING to Recruit STC Respiratory Therapy Students in Wake of COVID

South Texas College students are being highly sought after by hospital systems statewide. Recently, Laredo Medical Center, the largest health care system in Laredo, visited STC’s Nursing and Allied Health Campus for the first time ever with the intent to recruit the college’s best and brightest students. It was the latest in a recent string of visits by hospital recruiters to the campus, some from as far away as Lubbock, who are offering incentives in order to attract students. Laredo was offering sign-on bonuses as high as $25,000 for respiratory students. “We hope to continue collaborating with the college to find students acquiring a degree in specialized health care occupations including respiratory therapy, pharmacy technology, radiologic technology and nursing”, said Jorge E. Leal Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives (FACHE) and Chief Executive Officer.

Laredo Medical Center is a part of the largest health care system in Laredo comprised of a 326-bed acute care hospital, a freestanding emergency center, two urgent care clinics and multiple outpatient and ambulatory care centers throughout the community. “We are so excited our students have been able to obtain such offers. We have another hospital coming after the same students that are graduating with the respiratory care degree,” said South Texas College President Dr. Ricardo J. Solis. “It is a wakeup call to all the other hospitals in South Texas to recognize the value of our students.” STC’s Respiratory Therapy students are highly sought after due to their expertise. In the wake of the COVID pandemic, hospital systems placed a priority on employing RT graduates for their skillset in lung health issues, according to faculty. STC’s Nursing and Allied Health Program graduated 360 students in May, which included 234 with an Associate of Applied Science.

For more information about STC’s Respiratory Therapy Program please visit nah.southtexascollege.edu/resp/ or call 956-872-3216

Make-A-Wish Rio Grande Valley RGV’s SPARKLE OF HOPE Make-A-Wish Rio Grande Valley grants wishes to children with critical illnesses residing in Hidalgo, Willacy, Cameron, Starr, Kenedy, and Brooks counties. For children diagnosed with critical illnesses, a wish come true can be a crucial turning point in their lives. Wishes are more than just a “nice thing;” they are far more than gifts or singular events in time. Wishes impact everyone involved—wish kids, volunteers, donors, sponsors, medical professionals, and communities. For wish kids, making their wishes come true can give them the courage to comply with their medical treatments. Parents might finally feel like they can be optimistic. And others might realize all they have to offer the world through volunteer work or philanthropy. Make-A-Wish’s mission is to grant life-changing wishes for all critically ill children who qualify. Their journey begins with a sparkle of hope that develops into a wish.

What YOU Need to Know About Stroke MAY IS STROKE AWARENESS MONTH: The Ideal Time to Brush up on the Basics

By the time you are done reading this article, several people in the United States are likely to have experienced a stroke. In fact, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, someone in the United States has a stroke every 40 seconds. Sadly, stroke is also a leading cause of serious longterm disability,v with half of all stroke survivors over age 65 experiencing reduced mobility. What’s more, every four minutes, someone in this country dies from a stroke. Unfortunately, while that makes this all-too-common occurrence a leading cause of death and disability, many people are not familiar with stroke’s signs and symptoms. That’s especially unfortunate because blood flow to the brain is impacted when someone is having a stroke, so the sooner help is provided, the less potential there is for damage to occur.

What Is a Stroke? A stroke happens when an artery that carries blood to the brain is blocked or when a blood vessel ruptures, causing brain tissue to die as it is deprived of vital blood supply. Not all strokes are the same. The most common types include: Ischemic strokes occur when an artery in the brain is blocked and forms a blood clot. This is the most common type of stroke and, according to the American Stroke Association®, ischemic strokes account for nearly nine out of every 10 strokes. Typical symptoms include facial drooping, arm weakness or speech difficulty. A Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA) occurs when the blood supply to the brain is temporarily blocked. TIAs are sometimes referred to as “mini strokes” as these small blockages may cause symptoms and then go away. However, they can serve as an important warning sign and should be taken seriously. A hemorrhagic stroke occurs when a blood vessel ruptures in the brain and leaks blood into or around brain tissue. People experiencing hemorrhagic strokes may describe them as the worst headache of their lives. In addition to an intensive headache, weakness, nausea and vomiting can also be symptoms.

WHAT TO DO…

PETIQUETTE Dr. Barbara Baggerly-Hinojosa

We love to travel with our dog. What do you recommend we keep in mind? Traveling with our pets can be so much fun, but we do need to remember that not all people enjoy pets the same way we do. Be mindful that your pet is not bothering your travel neighbors. Keep your pet on a leash or in a carrying bag. It really is the best way to keep everyone safe and happy.

Our summers are usually very hot! What is the general etiquette rule about leaving pets outside during the summer? Our summers can certainly get very hot. While there is not really an etiquette rule concerning this topic, there certainly are some safety tips. Make sure your pets have shade, shelter, and plenty of fresh water. You will also want to check on them regularly during hot days. If possible, consider bringing your pets indoors during the hottest parts of the day. Remember, if it is too hot for you outside, it is too hot for your pets.

We are staying in a condo at the beach this summer, and we are taking our dog. What should we consider before going? I want to be prepared. This is a great question! You may want to consider what floor your condo is on and how fast you can take your pet outside when the need arises. One thing all pet owners should consider when traveling with pets is how to make sure the property is not damaged in any way by our pets. Planning ahead is the key!

HUMANE SOCIETY OF HARLINGEN

1106 Markowsky Ave., Harlingen • (956) 425-7297 • info@hshtx.org Since 2020, the Humane Society of Harlingen (HSH) has been the leader for animal welfare in the RGV. Thanks to our community’s support over the last two years, approximately ten thousand cats and dogs are alive and sharing their unconditional love with the world today. Additionally, HSH has served over 8,000 pets in two years through our monthly wellness clinics and has provided over 5,000 spay/neuter surgeries to the community.

Eddie - Male, one-year-old Shepherd Mix: Eddie is a sweet loving boy currently in a foster home waiting to be adopted. He has lived with other dogs and loves going to events. Eddie likes to go for walks, play with chew toys, and meet new people, but cuddling is his favorite thing to do!

Jalen - Female, one-year-old Shepherd Mix: Jalen is a loving girl that arrived at HSH in February 2021 as a tiny puppy. She was adopted and sadly returned to HSH in early May. Jalen is a very smart girl. She is crate trained, potty trained, has lived with dogs, and does very well with children.

Tallulah - Female, one-year-old Shepherd Mix: Tallulah is an amazing girl that gets random bursts of energy from time to time. She has interacted well with some of our shelter dogs and loves to have playtime with them. Tallulah would do best in a home where she can go on walks and explore new places.

Kane - Male, three-year-old Shepherd mix: Kane has been in and out of HSH since December 2020. He has lived with children, is crate trained, potty trained, and very sweet. He loves to go on walks and won’t say no to extra treats. Kane loves to be the center of attention and would do best in a single dog household.
