Thyroid Awareness Month

LEARN ABOUT THYROID HEALTH, DISEASE DETECTION, AND TREATMENT OPTIONS NEAR YOU

January is Thyroid Awareness Month, and thyroid health is more important than ever.

According to the American Thyroid Association, an estimated 20 million Americans have some form of thyroid disease. Up to 60 percent of those with thyroid disease are unaware of their condition.

UT Health RGV’s Dr. Henry Reinhart, one of the Valley’s only board-certified and fellowship-trained endocrine surgeons, advises everyone to take care of their thyroid. Dr. Reinhart says thyroid awareness is critical to early detection and a patient’s overall health.

ABOUT THE THYROID

The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped organ in the neck that produces thyroid hormones. These hormones are responsible for regulating metabolism, energy levels, body temperature, and other body functions. The thyroid plays a major role in the growth and development of the human body, which is why maintaining thyroid health is essential.

SYMPTOMS OF THYROID DISEASE

Feeling nervous, moody, and weak? These may be signs of hyperthyroidism - when the thyroid creates and releases too much thyroid hormone in the bloodstream.

Feeling tired and sluggish? These may be signs of hypothyroidism - when the thyroid doesn’t create and release enough thyroid hormone in the bloodstream.

Feel a lump or bump in your neck? This may be a common or cancerous thyroid nodule. These nodules often make it difficult to breathe or swallow.

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, Dr. Reinhart recommends seeing a doctor. “You would benefit from getting some bloodwork done, you might need an ultrasound if you feel any lumps or bumps in your neck. If anything comes from it, you may come and see me - I’m glad to help you out.”

TREATMENT OPTIONS, CLOSE TO HOME

If you have questions or concerns about your thyroid health, Dr. Reinhart suggests a thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) test. This test will help determine if your hormones are in line. A neck ultrasound may follow.

“If patients do have a thyroid nodule, they may need a biopsy which can be done in my office,” Dr. Reinhart said. “I can take care of patients who require additional treatment, surgery, or want the nodules reduced - there are many options.”

Dr. Reinhart now offers a radiofrequency ablation (RFA) option for treating thyroid nodules. “Radiofrequency ablation is a technique where we insert a little needle inside a tumor or nodule, and we use heat to shrink these nodules,” he said. “It’s not a surgery, it’s something we can do in a clinic, and it has incredible results.” Dr. Reinhart is currently one of the few doctors in the US and the only doctor in the mid and lower Valley who performs this procedure.

If you are experiencing thyroid issues, make an appointment and learn more about your options with Dr. Henry Reinhart, located at the UT Health RGV Surgery and Women’s Specialty clinic in Harlingen.

But water untamed and unrestrained can lead to devastation, especially in neighborhoods with drainage issues. The June storm of 2018 left the drought-ridden Rio Grande Valley with 18” to 3 feet of water that flooded thousands of vehicles and inundated several thousand homes and businesses. Damage estimates were in the hundreds of millions of dollars.

Drainage prompted the mayors of Edinburg, Pharr, McAllen, and Mission to join forces in 2022. Ambrosio Hernandez, MD (Pharr) was elected to office in 2015 and is the senior most elected official of the group. Javier Villalobos (McAllen) began serving in 2021. Ramiro Garza (Edinburg) took the oath of office in December 2021, and Nori Garza, the first woman to be elected mayor of Mission, took her post in June 2022. But what started as a conversation about drainage has become an ongoing partnership designed to grow the region.

“Drainage issues began our conversations,” said Edinburg Mayor Ramiro Garza. “We started meeting to let each other know what we were doing.” Discussing the specific challenges and solutions each city faced, the mayors quickly realized that moving the region forward not only on drainage but on economic development would take collaboration.

“By working together, we can assure that we aren’t duplicating efforts,” said Mission Mayor Nori Garza. “This saves everyone time and money.”

Her colleagues agree on that and have spoken about other related aspects of the situation.

“This conversation is long overdue,” stated McAllen Mayor Javier Villalobos. All four mayors said that finding common ground and ways that the cities can support each other is a new way of approaching issues. “This is the first time the mayors have ever regularly met,” said Pharr Mayor Ambrosio Hernandez, M.D. “The timing is right. We have really good karma together.”

Now, the four have invited other cities in Hidalgo County to join their quarterly meetings. “The last time we met, about half of the cities in our county showed up,” said Villalobos.

DRAINAGE

For decades the Rio Grande Valley has suffered from drainage issues. One way to combat the problem is to establish standards for new subdivision drainage across the Valley. Edinburg, Pharr, McAllen, and Mission are leading the way by requiring all new developments to have the same requirements and encouraging the smaller cities to join them. “Don’t let contractors pressure you [the city] to install sub-standard drainage by threatening to go to another city,” Hernandez said. “If we all have the same standards, everybody wins.”

McAllen has demonstrated how effective these changes can be. “In June 2018, McAllen had 2000 homes that were gravely impacted by a tremendous amount of rain over two-days,” Villalobos said. “In 2000, we had a similar storm with the same amount of rain, but only 200 homes were affected. We’re making progress.”

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

The drainage issue is one of several the group of Valley leaders have come together to discuss in recent months. That issue can be tucked into the larger context of overall development.

According to the US Census Bureau, the metropolitan area of McAllen-Mission-Edinburg-Pharr grew approximately 13% between 2010 and 2020. And with this growth comes the need for services—water, electricity, parks, entertainment, etc. “To provide these services, we need to maximize our resources. And to do that, we must come together,” said Ramiro Garza. For the region to flourish, we have to focus on economic development, and to maximize our efforts, we need to market our region together, suggests Hernandez. “We are stronger together,” he said. “Economic development is key to our growth and prosperity,” said Nori Garza.

Partnerships and collaboration across the region with The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley and South Texas College are key components to driving economic growth in the Rio Grande Valley. “McAllen and Mission are working together on a project that will provide approximately 1,400 jobs for engineers,” said Nori Garza. “This means jobs for our engineering students.”

And jobs mean home sales in Mission and Pharr, meals out in McAllen, and tickets to concerts and sporting events in Edinburg. Jobs mean growing families and a need for healthcare, green space, and cultural events. And with this growth, a responsibility to provide the community with neighborhoods that do not flood.

Gone are the days of one-school towns that battle it out under football’s Friday Night Lights. A new era of collaboration, trust, and growth is in the making.

SOCIALIFE Q&A WITH Ambrosio Hernandez, MD

Mayor of Pharr since 2015

Pediatric Surgeon

What is your biggest challenge being mayor of Pharr?

When I first took office, people didn’t know how much I could multitask; I work 24/7. I expect people to work. I told the staff, I’m not your boss; the taxpayers are. We’re not going to do easy - we’re going to take calculated, well-thought-out risks. So my biggest challenge was to help those who were not committed to the mission of the city to move on.

What project or initiative are you most proud of?

CITY OF PHARR

Dr. Ambrosio Hernandez, a Pharr native, was elected into office in 2015 and reelected in 2019. Hernandez is a pediatric surgeon, bariatric surgeon, director of surgical services, hospital compliance officer, and business professional by trade. Mayor Hernandez attended Pharr-San Juan-Alamo High School in 1986 and received his Bachelor of Science in Biology from The University of Texas-Pan American in 1990. He received his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Michigan Medical School in Ann Arbor in 1995 and obtained a Master’s Degree in Medical Science from The University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston.

We have great communication. We have a dialog with our community about what is happening in our city. Everything is bilingual, too. We are truly here to help. I love interacting with people. Just talking and bonding, chit chat over coffee, and hearing the ideas and suggestions from our citizens. They realize I’m just like them. I’m from here. I have the same traditions.

What do you love most about Pharr?

The people are very nice. They are polite and nice to each other. They hold us [elected officials] accountable, and as long as we are truthful, people listen. They may not agree, but they are respectful.

What do you want Pharr to be known for?

We do the right thing and do what is right for our city and the region because we are one family.

SOCIALIFE Q&A WITH Javier Villalobos

Mayor of McAllen since 2021 Attorney

What is your biggest challenge as the mayor of mcallen?

My biggest challenge is really a personal one. I can’t spend as much time with my family as I’d like. I can’t tend to my business as much because I need to be out there as the Mayor of McAllen. And I’m out there.

What project or initiative are you most proud of?

The last few years have been tough—COVID, immigration issues, sales tax—and we came out smelling like a rose. We were efficient and effective. We managed the city well and reduced our tax rate to the 2014 rate.

What are the top issues facing McAllen?

Javier Villalobos served as a member of the McAllen City Commission, the Texas Prepaid Higher Education Tuition Board (appointed by Gov. Abbott), McAllenHidalgo International Bridge Board, Anzaldúas International Bridge Board, Border Trade Alliance, and the Texas Border Coalition before being elected mayor of McAllen. He received his Bachelor’s degree from Southwest Texas State (now Texas State) and his law degree from Thurgood Marshall School of Law in Houston.

Traffic congestion. Our roads were not built to account for our growth. We’d like to see a loop constructed around the city, not through it. This would reduce congestion tremendously. Parks. People want more green space, and we need the property to develop parks. We are currently looking for new areas to create park space.

Perception. Because of the news and our proximity to the border, there is a distorted perception of McAllen outside the RGV. For example, in 2022, we were ranked the sixth safest city in America, and our crime rate has decreased for thirteen consecutive years

What do you love the most about McAllen?

The people are so positive. It is an honor to be the mayor. I appreciate the honesty, integrity, and transparency of our city government.

What do you want McAllen to be known for?

As the hub of South Texas, as a destination city. Come and enjoy McAllen with your family! But truly, it isn’t just McAllen. It is the whole area.

SOCIALIFE Q&A WITH Ramiro Garza Jr.

Mayor of Edinburg since Dec 2021 President, RG Economic Advisors

What is your biggest challenge as mayor of Edinburg?

Addressing all of the challenges of a growing community. For example, in 2022, there were 60 new subdivisions in our city—2640 new lots. In 2023 we already have 75 new subdivisions and 3,300 new lots planned. We welcome the growth, but we need to ensure that we have all the necessary services across the city - roads, power, water, police, and fire, for example.

Since taking office, what project or initiative are you most proud of?

I’ll have to say the Edinburg 2040 plan. It brings people together, and I appreciate our community's involvement. Cities aren’t set up to easily take in feedback. The eight 2040 committees that we established are already bringing us ideas—good ideas— to implement. For example, one committee noticed that our comprehensive plan hadn’t been updated since 2005, when we only had a population of 50,000. Now we have over 100,000. We’re working on that update now!

Born and raised in the Rio Grande Valley, Edinburg mayor Ramiro Garza Jr. was no stranger to City Hall. When he took office in 2021, he had already spent fifteen years as the Executive Director of the Edinburg Economic Development Corporation and then as Edinburg City Manager. Mayor Garza received his bachelors degree in Business Administration from UT Brownsville, now UTRGV.

What are the top issues facing Edinburg?

First off would be infrastructure and keeping up with mindful growth. Second, we must address basic needs and ensure we have sufficient fire and police coverage and a large enough service center. Third, I’d say positioning our city to compete for opportunities. We welcome new growth as a city with two hospital systems, a major university, and the county seat; we need to capitalize on these assets.

What do you love most about Edinburg?

Even though we have a population of over 100,000, Edinburg still feels like a small community. People look out for one another, and you’re made to feel like family.

What do you want Edinburg to be known for ?

That Edinburg is a family-friendly, innovative community that cares about its people.

Like most, our biggest challenge is funding and drainage. We are working through our comprehensive drainage improvement plan and have completed three of the five major projects..

What are your top priorities as mayor?

Drainage, Economic Development, Residential Development, and working with our three school districts—Sharyland, Mission, and La Joya.

What do you love most about mission?

AAF TOURNAMENT TO STRIKE OUT HUNGER

The American Advertising Federation RGV’s “It’s Time to Give, Grinches” bowling tournament was not your average charity event. The industry came together to show off their skills, sass, and of course, their ugly sweaters, with all proceeds going directly to supporting the UTRGV, STC, and TSC food pantries, providing much-needed assistance to students facing food insecurity.

Twenty teams gathered at Flamingo Bowl in McAllen to battle it out. Radio United took first place in the tournament, followed by Colair and Pro Uniforms. The South Texas College team brought the best spirit, and Sally Fraustro Guerra from SOCIALIFE won the ugliest sweater. The tournament is an excellent example of how the advertising industry can use its resources and talents to impact the community positively. ETIQUESTIONS

I am so excited to start going to social events and galas again. When the food is served, I always wonder what to do when not everyone at my table has a plate of food served yet. Do I wait, or is it ok to start eating?

What a great question! If you are seated at a table with eight or fewer guests, wait until everyone is served and for the hostess to begin eating before you dig in. At a long banquet table, it is ok to start when several people are seated and served.

I always find it rude when people are texting or talking on their phones while we are at the dining table. What is the rule about phone usage when you are seated at a dining table?

Telephone usage is such a part of our lives these days. It is a great idea to text or talk on the phone before you are seated for dinner. Once you are seated at the dining table, put your phone away and return to it once you leave. It is considered rude to talk on the phone or text while at the dining table. If you are in a situation where you need to take a call or text, excuse yourself to go to the bathroom before reaching for your phone. plan accordingly so that they can be present on the big day!

I am always thankful when someone holds the door open for me when I am entering a building. Is it ok for me (a female) to open the door for someone else?

It does not matter the gender, but whoever arrives first should open the door for the other person. It is always a polite thing to do.

El Paso Caldillo

The El Paso Caldillo is a favorite of mine because it uses Hatch Green Chile, which is a staple in El Paso, my hometown. It always reminds me of home. I used to make it with my beloved granny, who recently passed. I will continue her legacy through our family recipes.

Instructions:

Sauté beef and onions in bacon fat. Add tomatoes, chile strips, stocks and seasonings. Cook over low heat until meat is tender. Add cubed potatoes during the last 30 minutes. Caldillo may be frozen after preparation.

INGREDIENTS

3 pounds cubed beef

1 ½ cups diced onion

Bacon fat

3 cups tomatoes, diced

1 ½ cups Hatch Green Chile strips (better if not canned)

½ cup beef stock

½ cup chicken stock

2 teaspoons salt

2 teaspoons pepper

2 teaspoons garlic salt

2 teaspoons cumin

2 pounds potatoes cubed

“Mom’s” Turkey Chili

This is one of my daughter’s favorite “Mom” dishes. She asks me to make it for her and her friends every time she comes home and has even made it for her friends in her dorm. Its become a true comfort meal in our home. I often make a double batch!

INGREDIENTS

2 TBS coconut oil

1 pound lean ground white turkey

1 head fresh cilantro, chopped

1 yellow or red onion, finely chopped

Instructions

Heat a large stockpot over medium heat. Add the coconut oil. Add the turkey meat and sear for 1-2 minutes without stirring. Scatter the cilantro, onion, and garlic around the turkey meat and cook for 2-3 more minutes, stirring once or twice to break up the meat. Add the chili powder, cumin, and oregano and stir. Add the tomato paste and cook for 1 minute more, stirring once or twice until the paste becomes fragrant.

Add the chicken broth, the diced tomatoes, zucchini, and kale, and bring to a simmer over medium heat for 20-30 minutes until the meat is cooked and the vegetables are tender.

I use a food processor to chop and slice the vegetables before I start cooking the meat. Can be served with a dollop of sour cream. Reheats well.

3 garlic cloves, minced

2 TBS chili powder (mild or hot)

2 tsp ground cumin

1 tsp oregano

1 6 oz. can, tomato paste

32 oz. chicken broth

1 15 oz can diced tomatoes

1 zucchini, sliced

½ 1 pd. bag of kale, chopped

¼ cup fresh line juice (about 2 limes)

Super Easy Venison

Chili Recipe

I started this family tradition based on what my Dad taught me. He always said, “You’ve got to respect nature, and if you’re going to hunt, you’ve got to eat what you kill!” So I learned how to cook and make venison chile. I’ve been using this super easy recipe for many, many years!

Instructions

Brown meat in oil of your choice. Add onions and garlic and saute until tender. Add meat, onions, chili powder, cayenne pepper, salt and pepper, masa harina, tomato paste, diced tomatoes, and beans. Stir. Add beef broth as needed depending on how thick you want your chili (you may substitute water or beer for beef broth). Simmer for an hour or more if needed. Serve with grated cheddar cheese, chives, avocado, and/or sour cream. You can also serve it with hotdogs or enchiladas! This is a very versatile dish!

Enjoy with saltine crackers or cornbread.

The Breakfast Cake

Growing up in 4-H, I was exposed to many opportunities and was blessed to be part of many projects, such as agriculture, shooting sports, arts/crafts, and, of course, cooking. With our cooking projects, we had to use our imagination to deliver a unique and delicious dish for the 4-H Food Show competition. With my mother supervising, we brought home a blue ribbon for our Breakfast Cake. I always knew breakfast was the most important meal of the day, but hey, so is cake! And so the Breakfast Cake was born and has now become a holiday favorite in my family.

Instructions:

Make sure to preheat your oven to 350 while you prepare your dish. Cook the sausage roll on high heat and constantly keep breaking it apart. You want to keep turning it and chop it up into little chunks until fully cooked. After, you want to drain it to prepare for your next steps. Next, beat the 3 eggs. Place them in a medium bowl, and whisk until the yolk and whites are combined. Take 1 can of the buttermilk biscuits. Open and place each raw biscuit on the bottom of the pan squeezing all 8 into one lower layer. Then spread all the cooked sausage over the lower layer of biscuits. Then I take the eggs and carefully pour the egg mixture over the sausage around the pan. I then spread the cheese evenly over all the ingredients around the pan. Take your second can of the buttermilk biscuits. Open and place each raw biscuit on top of all the ingredients making the top layer in the pan. Trust me; they will connect. You are now ready to place your pan into the preheated oven at 350 for 30 - 35 minutes, depending on your oven. Take your golden brown dish and let it rest for 10 minutes. It's now time to flip and serve. The breakfast cake serves well with jam or salsa for a unique easy breakfast.

INGREDIENTS

1 lb venison chili meat

1 cup diced onions

3 cloves diced garlic

4 tablespoons chili powder

2 tablespoons cayenne pepper (more or less, depending on how spicy you want it)

Salt and pepper to taste

2 tablespoons masa harina

1 small can of tomato paste

1 medium can of diced tomatoes (Rotel if you want green chilies)

1 medium can red beans or any kind of beans that you like (beans are optional)

Beef broth, water or beer (amount depends on how thick you want your chili

INGREDIENTS

1 - 16 oz Pork Sausage Roll

3- Eggs

1 cup of Mexican Blend Cheese

2- 8ct 16.3oz buttermilk biscuits

1- Standard Bunt Cake Pan

Prep Time: 20 minutes

Cook Time: 30 minutes

NON-PROFIT SPOTLIGHT

Since 1988, Habitat for Humanity of the Rio Grande Valley has been dedicated to the ideal that all people deserve to own a home that is both comfortable and affordable. Working in partnership with God, Habitat changes lives by enabling people who live in substandard housing to become responsible homeowners. Habitat is accountable for constructing more than 100 houses throughout the Valley and offers a “hand up,” not a “hand out,” to less fortunate families from our four-county region. Family partners must be hard-working, low-income residents that may not be able to qualify for a traditional mortgage. As part of their commitment, future Habitat for Humanity homeowners commit to completing 300 hours of sweat equity towards the construction of their own homes.

We are proud of our RGV Habitat families' dedicated efforts and the support of our community partners, generous donors, and helpful volunteers. At Habitat for Humanity of the Rio Grande Valley, we offer several opportunities to build or repair homes with and for U.S. Veterans, families, and senior citizens throughout the year.

Additionally, we have volunteer work opportunities available year-round at our local Habitat ReStores in McAllen and Harlingen, Texas. Habitat ReStores are home improvement stores that accept small and large donations of new or gently used furniture, appliances, housewares, building materials, and more. You can always donate goods in person or request a free pickup of large items. Priority pick-up options are also an option via our website. Proceeds from the sales of these donated items help fund Habitat’s mission in our local RGV community.

By volunteering with or donating to Rio Grande Valley Habitat for Humanity, you can give back to our local community and help us continue to build a world where everyone has a decent place to live.

the josé cisneros COLLECTION

Armed with pens, ink, and colored pencils, plus a gifted natural eye for his subjects, a remarkable artist named José Cisneros captured centuries of life in the borderlands—those thousands of rugged square miles sprawling on either side of the present United States and Mexico boundary.

Through his artwork, Cisneros created a unique legacy of handmade images depicting the people who interacted with, explored, colonized, fought for, and settled a rugged and often unforgiving land. His subjects, mostly anonymous, are in keeping with his view that generations of ordinary people—their names often forgotten today—were the true makers of the borderlands’ immense, diverse heritage.

Born in 1910 near Durango, Mexico, Cisneros’ career spanned more than seven decades, mostly in his adopted city of El Paso, Texas, where he passed away in 2009. His illustrations reflect a range of historiographical perspectives. An example is “Riders of the Borderlands,” a series of lively penand-ink depictions of horse and mule riders from Spanish conquistadores to

the 1960s. Published by Texas Western Press in 1970, it was this slender volume, with the artist’s descriptions of his subjects, that prompted the Hidalgo County Historical Museum— now the Museum of South Texas History—to contact the artist in 1980 and commission him to do an illustration for new exhibits about regional history. The result was Vaquero de Nuevo Santander – c. 1750, portraying a nameless working cowman of the colonial era on horseback. From the broad-brimmed hat to the ornate cross-stirrups, this iconic figure conveys the Spanish roots of ranching in northeastern Mexico and South Texas.

The museum commissioned two more individual works from Cisneros: Don José de Escandón, colonizer of Nuevo Santander (1981), and a war-weary former Confederate soldier about to start ranching in the post-Civil War Valley (The New Beginning, 1984). Later the museum asked Cisneros about creating an entire series of illustrations depicting the varied history of this region through the centuries. The artist agreed, and in 1986 the museum opened “Images

Through the Centuries” with Cisneros and his wife Vicenta as guests. A follow-up series commissioned in the 1990s covered additional subjects. In 1998 a complete exhibition of the entire collection opened in the Main Gallery (now the River Crossroads exhibit area), accompanied by the new book catalog, “Borderlands: The Heritage of the Lower Rio Grande Through the Art of José Cisneros,” published by the museum. Along with the framed works, the museum included displays of artifacts relating to the eras and subjects depicted.

Currently, the Borderlands series is on view in the 1910 Jail Cell Block Gallery, which closes in June 2023. It is one of the most treasured of the museum’s collections. Today, looking back more than 40 years, this writer recalls the unique privilege of becoming acquainted with Cisneros and being the staff member who not only suggested subjects for the illustrations but also provided historical information and reference pictures to him. Quiet and modest, he was a true son of the borderlands.

ILLUMINA FEST CELEBRATES THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD

For the past ten thousand years, people across cultures have celebrated light during the winter season. In December, Quinta Mazatlan honored this tradition with their fourth annual ILLUMINA Fest celebrating the light of the world. Guests enjoyed over thirty art and light installations along the trail through the woods. Strolling through the Luminaria Trail with over 3,000 luminarias, the beautiful Ebony Trees, Mesquites, Anacauas, and Sabal Palms—our native valley trees—were spectacularly on display. The outdoor exhibits honored Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Lunar New Year, Diwali, Native American Traditions, and Nature at Night. The ILLUMINA Fest stage featured many performers sharing their light, including fire shows, aerialists, dancers, mariachi groups, choirs, and more.

LOOKING FOR A LOVING HOME

Yaqui Animal Rescue

LILY: My name is Lily, and I'm a lazy girl looking for my forever home. I've been at the shelter since 2015 and am ready to find my special someone. I'm not one for a lot of activity; I prefer to hang out and relax. If you're looking for a chill companion to lounge with, I'm your girl.

But don't let my laid-back attitude fool you; I love attention and affection. I'll be your loyal companion and will always be by your side. I would prefer to be the only girl in your life, as I want all of your love and attention for myself.

REX: Hey there, my name is Rex, and I'm an active and energetic boy looking for my forever home. Despite my age, I still have a lot of energy, and I'm always up for a game of fetch. If you're looking for a running partner, look no further because I'm your guy!

I'm a very big boy, so I'll need a lot of space to run around and play. I'm looking for someone who can give me all the love and attention I need and keep up with my active lifestyle. If you're the one for me, contact Yaqui. I can't wait to meet you and start our new adventure together!

WINSTON: Hello, my name is Winston, and I'm a sweet, older boy looking for my forever home. I may be a bit older, but I still have a lot of love to give. I'm a very calm and gentle dog, and I enjoy nothing more than spending time with my human companion.

I would make an excellent pet for children or a companion for an older person. I'm very patient, and I love to be around people. I'm also very low maintenance, and I don't require a lot of exercise or training. I just want to be by your side and be your loyal companion.

CHOCO: Hi there! My name is Choco, and I'm a friendly and loving boy looking for my forever home. I love people, and I'm great with other dogs, so if you have other furry friends, I'll get along with them just fine.

I'm a good boy with a lot of energy, and I love to play and be active. I'm very smart and eager to please, so I'll be easy to train and quickly become a well-behaved member of your family. I'm a very affectionate and loving dog, and I'll be your loyal companion for life.

WHEN YOUR RUNNING BUDDY HAS FOUR FEET

It’s a new year and with a new year comes new hopes and dreams. For many people, that means it’s time to make resolutions. According to a Forbes health online poll, the most common new year’s resolutions are improving fitness (39%) and losing weight (37%). For some pet owners, this is an opportunity for them to have their fur baby be a part of their new fitness goals. Many people begin a walking or running routine to accomplish this. However, not all dog breeds are built for walking long distances or running.

Here are some essential things to keep in mind if you have made a new year’s resolution to lose weight by walking, jogging, or running with your fur baby:

Puppies aged 18 months or younger are still maturing, which means that their bones and muscles are not ready for the demands of strenuous exercise. Putting heavy miles on your puppy could cause permanent damage to its developing body.

During your dog’s first time with you, starting them off slowly is a great idea. It would be best if you first got them used to walking and running by your side. Slowly but surely, increase your speed and distance. Build up your dog’s endurance and stamina so that he or she can go the distance you will be going.

Socialize your dog. This will prevent your dog from getting distracted when you are out on a run, and other people and/ or dogs are around you. A distracted dog can cause major problems for you, and your walk or run will not be enjoyable.

Be mindful of the temperature outside and on the pavement. Physical activity outside with your dog should be safe and since the weather in the RGV is mostly warm, sticking to the early morning or late evening hours is your best bet. Remember, dogs cannot cope that well with heat due to their reduced number of sweat glands.

Just like we choose running shoes to make our walking or running easier, think about your dog’s paws. The more cushioned the ground, the better for them. Dogs’ paws can become sore when they walk or run on the hot asphalt.

Here are the breeds that are perfect to have as running partners:

Weimaraner – this breed tends to be high-energy, active, and intelligent

Dalmatian – this breed is strong, active, athletic, and has great stamina

Vizsla – this breed is high-energy and has great stamina

German Shorthaired Pointer – this breed is energetic, fast, and can withstand a high-mileage run

Rhodesian Ridgeback – this breed is athletic, powerful, and loves to run

English Springer Spaniel – this breed tends to love exercise

Doberman Pinscher – this breed is fast, lean, muscular, and loves to run

American Foxhound – this breed is usually energetic and loves to exercise

Saluki – this breed is thin, but it is one of the fastest breeds in the world

Belgian Malinois – this breed is a working breed and has the capability to run long distances

Certain dog breeds are a huge no-no to have as running partners. These breeds are the Pug, British Bulldog, and French Bulldog. They all have very short muzzles, which limits their breathing, and their bodies have difficulty cooling down when the weather is warm.

For the most part, despite your dog’s breed and size, it should still get some exercise. As long as you use common sense and know the type of dog you have, you and your dog can enjoy some type of physical activity, even if it is indoors.
