November Is ® American Diabetes Month BRUSH UP ON THE WARNING SIGNS OF DIABETES This month is the ideal time to get the facts about diabetes and discover how the family medicine physicians at South Texas Health System® Clinics can help diagnose and treat this all-too-common condition. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 37 million people in the United States have diabetes and as many as one out of every five of them don’t even know they have it. The American Diabetes Association® notes that common symptoms of diabetes can include things like: feeling very thirsty; urinating often; extreme fatigue; blurry vision; and, cuts and bruises that are slow to heal. In many cases, early detection can make all the difference, giving you the best opportunity to get needed treatment as quickly as possible and helping to avoid complications down the road. The statistics on prediabetes are even more startling. It’s estimated that 96 million U.S. adults – more than one out of every three – have prediabetes. The good news is that those who are prediabetic can greatly reduce their risk of getting type 2 diabetes by incorporating healthier habits. It’s time to make good health a priority. COMMUNITY PRIDE
City of Edinburg EDINBURG’S 9TH ANNUAL LOS MUERTOS BAILAN FESTIVAL & BLOCK PARTY
In a dazzling display of culture, art, and celebration, the City of Edinburg recently hosted the 9th Annual “Los Muertos Bailan Festival & Block Party.” The event, held on Saturday, October 21, 2023, transformed McIntyre St. from 8th St. into the largest Day of the Dead block party in South Texas, with more than 10,000 people attending. In partnership with the Museum of South Texas History and Area956, this vibrant pre-celebration of the Day of the Dead brought the community together for a lively celebration of life and the connection between the living and the deceased. The festival delighted attendees with various activities, including carnival rides and vendors offering unique treasures and delicious festival food. Best of all, it was free and open to the public, making it an inclusive celebration for all.

Edinburg’s diverse artistic, musical, and performing talents took center stage, with Mexican folkloric dancers captivating the audience with their stunning performances. MOSTH’s Altar exhibit, the community procession, and the community altar showcased the more traditional aspects of Dia de los Muertos, and this year, the community paid tribute to Edinburg’s beloved Fire Chief Shawn Snider at the altar. The 9th Annual “Los Muertos Bailan Festival” was a resounding success, weaving cultural richness and community spirit into the heart of Edinburg.

McAllen Holiday Parade:
A Decade of Magic By Dr. Kimberly Selber
McAllen is marking the 10th anniversary of the McAllen Holiday Parade with more dazzling lights, holiday cheer, and jubilant spirit. With an unwavering commitment to fostering a high quality of life, McAllen has cultivated more than just a parade; it has woven a tapestry of tradition and togetherness. The McAllen Holiday Parade symbolizes the city’s enduring promise to bring the community vibrancy, joy, and an unmatched festive spirit.

The Holiday Parade, an idea set into motion by the City Commission in 2014, was intended to be more than a mere celebration; it was designed to be a tradition-building, memory-making extravaganza. Further, the idea paralleled the McAllen Performing Arts Center’s programming, like “Broadway in the Rio Grande Valley,” which brings world-class Broadway performances to McAllen. “We wanted to create an event that brought this level of event experience to our city,” McAllen City Manager Roy Rodriguez shared. With a short timeline of about four months, it was all hands on deck to imagine, schedule, and build a parade that ushered in the holiday season like nothing the Rio Grande Valley had ever seen. At the first pre-parade broadcast in 2014, Rodriguez told viewers, “We’re gonna make a big difference this year.” Boy, was he right.
With such collaborative synergy, the city also engaged Kern Studio, the illustrious float builder known for the New Orleans Mardi Gras parade, to help with some of the key floats. “Barry Kern was amazing and so helpful,” Jimenez recalls. Big things came together very quickly. The inaugural 2014 parade’s turnout astounded everyone. Approximately 100,000 attendees took officials by surprise. The City was expecting a good crowd, but there were “massive amounts of people here,” exclaimed a reporter during the first parade’s live broadcast. Rodriguez reflects on the underlying foundation of the parade’s success: “The reason we had a parade this size is because of the partnerships we have in our community.”
The initial concept was modest. “When we first had the idea, we thought we might have one float and one balloon and some marching bands,” recounted Carina Jimenez, deputy director of programs for McAllen Parks & Recreation. The outcome, however, exceeded expectations: “Before we knew it, we had a full lineup of Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade-style balloons and over 35 floats.” The endeavor was far from solitary. To pull off an event of the caliber imagined by the City, they needed experience. “We worked with Jean McFaddin, the former director of the famous Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade,” Jimenez continued. Joe Vera, McAllen’s Assistant City Manager, leveraged his long-standing friendship with McFaddin through the International Festival and Events Association, drawing her into the fold to lend her extraordinary expertise on producing a large-scale holiday parade.

The first parade was presented by La Plaza Mall and powered by Bert Ogden Motors. “Without hesitation, Bert Odgen stepped in on year one and has provided all the vehicles we needed every year ever since without question,” said Jimenez. Launched as the largest holiday and helium balloon parade in Texas, the event featured 40 floats, each a product of three weeks of laborious love. McAllen Parks and Recreation took the lead and continues to head the planning and production of the event with the Float Studio building each local float featured in the parade. Alongside the floats at the inaugural parade were 16 giant helium character balloons and 14 marching bands, along with drill teams and cheer squads from across the region. The following year saw the attendance swell to about 120,000. In 2016, some of the Dallas Cowboys players added their star presence, and by 2017, the crowd numbers were estimated at a staggering 250,000. Innovative additions such as animated floats and snow machines

enhanced the magical atmosphere. 2018 marked a new chapter with H-E-B stepping in as the presenting sponsor and Bert Ogden Motors continuing to support the parade’s procession with its vehicles powering each of the floats. Macy’s department store also joined the McAllen Holiday Parade, bringing with them the grandeur reminiscent of their own Thanksgiving Day parade in New York, which attracts millions. By 2019, the parade had grown to include 50 floats, 14 marching bands, and 39 helium balloons, parading down Bicentennial Blvd. to McAllen Veterans Memorial Stadium before a quarter-million spectators. The parade also introduced the “Vuelta Zone,” a unique feature inspired by local culture. “The Vuelta Zone originated here in McAllen,” Joe Vera described, sharing how the spontaneous cheer of “Vuelta. Vuelta!” from the crowd turned into a beloved ritual of twirling the balloons like a girl in her quinceañera gown for all to see. Tickets to sit in the South Padre Island Vuelta Zone sell out every year.

With a nod to the parade’s significant and growing impact, in 2019, Gov. Greg Abbott bestowed upon McAllen the title of the South Pole of Texas. Signs with this designation can be found at key locations around McAllen.
everyone.” The parade’s success is a testament to the unity and dedication of the entire community, with every aspect funded entirely by sponsorships.
As momentum continued to grow, everyone looked forward to the December 2020 parade until everything shut down in March due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. 2020 called for innovation. McAllen rose to the challenge by transforming the traditional parade into a live virtual celebration, with TV personality Mario Lopez hosting and frontline workers honored as Grand Marshals. “This is the year we re-imagined Christmas,” Jimenez reflects. Floats processed around the stadium in front of bleachers filled with cardboard cutouts, participants wore masks, and safety precautions were at the highest levels. The parade was rebroadcast on Christmas Day in 83 markets across the US, garnering millions of views and over 87 million advertising impressions. The community’s eagerness for the return to in-person gatherings post-pandemic was palpable. Embracing a festive “Rockin’ Around the South Pole” theme, the McAllen Holiday Parade welcomed exciting new partners, such as South Padre Island, into its fold. “South Padre Island recognized the value in partnering with us,” City Manager Roy Rodriguez remarked, emphasizing the importance of such alliances. “We truly value these partnerships.” The burgeoning collaborations were mirrored by a surge in spectators. Jimenez shared the turnout: “We had over 265,000 attend the parade in 2021,” and with a note of optimism, she added, “We expect to see that number continue to grow.” Behind the scenes “This is a huge team effort. Everyone from public works, public safety, transit, traffic operations, and convention facilities to our 2,700 volunteers play a role in creating this experience,” Jimenez proudly states, her voice catching. “Creating the parade for our community and families means a lot to

Since 2015, the McAllen Holiday Parade has consistently earned accolades from the International Festival and Events Association (IFEA). It secured Gold for the best new event in its inaugural year and went on to clinch Gold for Best Parade in 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2023. A milestone was reached in 2022 when it was awarded the Grand Pinnacle, the highest honor. In 2020, the Parade was celebrated with Gold in the best virtual event category for its innovative “Re-imagining Christmas” experience. Further, because of the City’s approach to top-level event production, it has been recognized as an IFEA World Festival and Event City for 2022 and 2023. McAllen is in good company on the IFEA awards podium with events like the Pasadena Rose Parade and the Kentucky Derby, both of which are well over 100 years old, and cities like Sydney, Australia. While we celebrate the 10th anniversary of the McAllen Holiday Parade, let us remember that the parade is not just an event; it’s an embodiment of community spirit and a beacon of joy that continues to shine brighter every year.

DID YOU KNOW
Rio Grande Valley onions have been making headlines for over 100 years? By Dr. Kimberly Selber
The Rio Grande Valley, a region rich in agricultural heritage, has a fascinating history with one of its key crops: onions. This story spans over a century, intertwining the region’s development with the evolution of onion cultivation.
O
nions are believed to be one of the oldest cultivated crops, integral to the prehistoric diet. Their durability, ease of transport, and adaptability to various soils and climates made them ideal for early agriculture. Not only were onions a crucial food source, but they also played a significant role in hydration, and their ability to be dried and preserved made them invaluable in times of food scarcity. Although the precise origins of onions remain elusive, ancient records highlight their significance in nutrition, art, medicine, and even mummification practices. In Ancient Egypt, for example, onions were revered, symbolizing eternity, and were often buried with pharaohs as sacred offerings.
72
www.socialifeRGV.com
ONION FARMING IN SOUTH TEXAS The rise of onion farming in South Texas took off in the early 1900s. In 1904, farmers cultivated about 500 acres of onions, setting the stage for a significant shift in the area’s agricultural landscape. This trend experienced a swift expansion, and by 1929, the region’s onion production had skyrocketed, reaching more than sevenfold the quantity recorded in 1907. THE ONION RACE TO NEW YORK In 1926, an intriguing competition captured public interest: the race to transport onions from the Lower Rio Grande Valley and the Nile Valley of Egypt to New York. Newspapers nationwide covered this annual event, focusing on the speed and efficiency of these shipments. Headlines such as “Onion Race Now On From Texas and From Egypt” and “Rival Onions in Annual Race to N.Y.” highlighted this unique rivalry. According to one Maine newspaper, the Rio Grande Valley “produces enough onions to flavor all the salads in the world. So does Egypt.” So why the rush? Well, whoever got there first would reap the profits. If Texas arrived ahead of Alexandria, Bermuda onions would fetch a higher price. But, if Egypt arrived first, the Texas market would slump considerably. There was more at stake than just a side veggie. The Morning Call of Patterson, New Jersey, reported, “Private leased wires are maintained day and night…to keep a check on the onion race.”
RGV’S ONION INDUSTRY TODAY The post-war period saw a substantial increase in onion production. In the 1950s, Texas emerged as the leading state in onion acreage in the U.S. By 1984, Hidalgo County became the highest-producing county in Texas, accounting for 60% of Texas’s total onion harvest. Today, onions remain a vital crop in Texas, which ranks 6th in U.S. onion production. Approximately 55% of Texas’s onions are grown right here in the Lower Rio Grande Valley. VARIETIES AND INNOVATIONS Texas has developed several onion varieties, like the Rio Bravo Y and Texas Early White. But the crown jewel is the 1015 Texas Sweet Onion, developed by Dr. Leonard Pike and popularized in the 1980s. This variety, known for its sweetness, is a result of extensive research and innovation in onion breeding. And its unique name, the 1015, came from its recommended planting time – mid-October. So popular is the 1015 that it has its own festival called, you guessed it, Texas Onion Fest. This celebration is held every March in Weslaco, where the 1015 was initially developed. THE OFFICIAL STATE VEGETABLE OF TEXAS In 1997, the Texas sweet onion was designated the Official State Vegetable, acknowledging its historical and cultural significance. This recognition honors the onion and celebrates the farmers, researchers, and communities involved in its cultivation and development over the years. The history of onions in the Rio Grande Valley is a tapestry of agricultural innovation, economic growth, and cultural significance. From the early 20th century to the present day, onions have been more than just a crop; they’ve been a cornerstone of the region’s identity and a testament to the resilience and ingenuity of its people.
ONE LAST THING Why do onions make us cry when we cut them? Scientifically, their sulfuric compounds are responsible for the tears we shed. Experts say you can mitigate the waterworks by chilling the onions first or cutting them under running water.

SOCIALIFE RGV HISTORY
ALFONSO RENÉ RAMÍREZ: A LEGACY OF LEADERSHIP Kelly Francis-Love, museum archivist
A
lfonso René Ramírez (1923-2009) is perhaps most remembered for serving as the first Hispanic mayor of Edinburg, Texas, from 1963 to 1967. Throughout his life, however, Ramírez made numerous contributions to his community. A graduate of Texas A&M University and a World War II veteran, Ramírez had careers in politics, education, and publishing. As an elected official, Ramírez left a legacy of cooperation and public service chosen over private interests. In 1966, he broke his leg in a car accident, but he left his hospital bed to greet farm workers who were on strike. That strike helped spark the Chicano Civil Rights movement in Texas. As an educator, he recognized that learning multiple languages was crucial to overcoming “misunderstandings between people who speak different languages and have different customs,” as he noted in a speech on Pan-Americanism. Ramírez taught Spanish at Pan American College and developed a bilingual education curriculum that was used in Texas and California by the 1970s. Through his publishing company, Nuevo Santander Press, he promoted the regional history of South Texas and northeastern Mexico. “Four Generations of Velas,” “Ranch Life in Hidalgo County after 1850,” “Folk Life and Folk Lore of the Mexican Border,” and “Wild Horse Desert: The Heritage of South Texas” are just a few of the titles he published.
76
www.socialifeRGV.com
He was proud of his Hispanic roots and helped organize the first Vela Family Reunion at Laguna Seca Ranch in 1984, with more than 1,300 family members in attendance. Recognizing the importance of his legacy, the Ramírez family donated materials about his life and career to the Museum of South Texas History. By doing so, they entrusted the museum to be the caretakers of this legacy and share it with the larger public through display, research, and publication.

What is your number one table etiquette tip to keep in mind? I try very hard to mind my manners at the table, but I am sure I am forgetting something. The one table etiquette tip that I believe is important to keep in mind is to be careful with how you chew your food. Remember to keep your mouth closed while eating and take small bites so your mouth is not so full you can’t chew well.
It is finally symphony season again, and I want to make sure I understand the etiquette rules when it comes to applause. What should I keep in mind? Horray for the return of the symphony!!! Knowing when and how to clap is one aspect of concert manners that can be a bit confusing. It is always best to wait until the entire piece of music is over before clapping. However, sometimes, it is hard to know when the piece of music is ending. When in doubt, simply wait until lots of other people are clapping. It is okay to clap loudly and enthusiastically, but do not confuse it with cheering on a football team. Simply clap without moving around and yelling. The musicians and your neighbors will appreciate it very much.
If the basket of bread is close to me on the table, which way do I pass it around the table? If the basket of bread is close to you, offer the bread to the person on your left, get a piece for yourself, and then pass it to your right.

The Urban Sanctuary is Awesome Family Fun By Colleen Hook, Executive Director, Quinta Mazatlan
Most of us wish we could spend more time outdoors to enjoy our natural treasures. Studies show that spending time in nature can reduce stress and anxiety. Step into a beautiful urban oasis in McAllen, just minutes from the airport and mall, and Be Happy! 1 Family Fun Quinta Mazatlan is a great place to spend time with your family. Kids will be fascinated to see the wild birds in the Thornforest. Friendly walking trails make it easy on the young ones. Our little modern-day dinosaur, the Chachalaca, will greet you, along with other feathered friends, at the front gates. Stop in on Saturdays for STEM Stops at 11:00, 1:00, and 3:00 pm at the Discovery Center, free with park admission.
2 Birding There’s a reason why the RGV is on the list of top 3 birding destinations in the country. The area has documented over 520 different kinds of birds; That is over 90% of those seen in Texas and over 50% seen in North America. Many of the Valley specialty birds call Quinta Mazatlan “home,” such as the Green Jay, Kiskadee, Olive Sparrow, Clay-colored Thrush, Long-billed Thrasher, Plain Chachalaca, Pauraque, Altamira Oriole and Buff-bellied Hummingbird. Keep your binoculars available, as migratory birds are always checking into the B&B!
3 Historic Adobe Home In the middle of the Thornforest is a large adobe home built in the 1930s by Marcia & Jason Matthews. Over 10,000 adobe blocks make up the estate, with a beautiful courtyard reminiscent of the homes in Mazatlan, Mexico. Handmade Talavera Tile archways, Cedar Beams, and Saltillo Tile flooring characterize the Spanish Revival Style architecture.
4 Bronze Forest Sculpture Trail The forest trail features the beautiful sculptures of local artist Douglas Clark. Over 40 bronze sculptures tell the story of our wildlife in the Rio Grande Valley. Clark prefers to work from life, but some sculptures feature rare and endangered species like the wildcats that used to roam south Texas and thus works from old photographs and sketches.

WE’VE GONE MAD HATTER!
Photography by: Tiffany Miranda
There was fun, laughter, and “craziness” when the Mad Hatter’s Soiree of the Philippine American Chamber of Commerce of Texas-Rio Grande Valley (PACC- RGV) was held at the Mission Event Center on October 6, 2023. The technicolor event portrayed the chaos and confusion of Wonderland as well as showcasing the unpleasant sides of human nature in the classic Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. The annual event was attended by many from the Filipino-American community, dazzling ladies and gentlemen in the RGV, as well as the mayors of San Juan, McAllen, and Edinburg.

KEEPING YOUR DOG SAFE AND HAPPY THIS THANKSGIVING By Dr. Ruben Castro
Now that Halloween is behind us, it is time to focus on the Thanksgiving holiday. If you are lucky enough to have the entire Thanksgiving week off, that is one thing to be thankful for! We are right in the middle of the NFL season, and I know many people are looking forward to catching up with relatives, eating great food, and watching football on Thanksgiving Day. We must be aware of all the dangerous food we eat that could be hazardous to our dogs. Unfortunately, some people intentionally feed their dogs their Thanksgiving Day table scraps, not knowing that they are putting their dogs at risk of getting sick or, at worst, unintentionally causing them to die.
1
No turkey bones! Where there is a turkey, there are turkey bones. Turkey bones can cause damage to your dog’s digestive tract. According to Kings Crossing Animal Hospital, a dog eating a turkey bone can irritate their digestive tract, which causes them to vomit and/or have diarrhea, leading to dehydration.
2
Avoid fatty foods. According to the American Kennel Club (AKC), foods such as ham, sausage, turkey skin, and gravy tend to be fatty, which can cause pancreatitis in dogs. If you see the skin on meat, giving to your dog is not good.
3
The AKC also says to ensure your dog does not ingest any sweet foods containing the ingredient xylitol. Xylitol is a natural sugar alcohol found in plants. It is extremely toxic for dogs and is commonly found in sweet foods such as many holiday desserts.
4
Some holiday desserts may contain raisins or grapes, which do not contain xylitol but are very toxic for dogs. Be very careful when handling these foods because they roll when they fall and can be difficult to locate and pick up.
5
The AKC and the American Kennel Society recommend the following Thanksgiving foods that are safe for your dog to eat in moderation: • Turkey meat – just ensure the meat has no seasonings • Potatoes – sweet potatoes are a great source of dietary fiber &vitamins • Green beans – plain green beans are full of vitamins and fiber • Apples – a great source of fiber & vitamins; just make sure to remove the skin! • Pumpkin – make sure you feed your dog raw pumpkin (no spices, just plain)
Spending the holidays with family and our dogs can be just what the doctor ordered. All we must do is exercise a little common sense and reasoning, and our dogs will be around for many Thanksgiving meals to come. I wish everyone and their dog a happy and safe Thanksgiving Day!
