We are thrilled to welcome you back to the School of Theatre at Florida State and to our exciting 20222023 season of plays and musicals! Each year, we present performances that build on our rich past to reflect on the now, stimulate discussion among our community, and significantly enhance our students’ education.
For over 50 years, the School of Theatre has trained students not just for Broadway stages but as theatremakers, leaders, artists, and advocates for theatre across the world. None of this would be possible without our immensely dedicated faculty and staff and the generous and loyal support from members of our community. It is no wonder that with such shared effort the School of Theatre continues to be recognized as one of the top programs in the country.
We hope that you will join us for each and every production as we celebrate the incredibly talented students, faculty, and staff who have worked tirelessly to create what you see on stage. Thank you for supporting the arts and the School of Theatre at Florida State as we could not do it without you!
- Brad Brock & Kris SalataThe School of Theatre is located on land that is the ancestral and traditional territory of the Apalachee Nation, the Muscogee Nation, the Miccosukee Tribe of Florida, and the Seminole Tribe of Florida. We pay respect to their Elders past and present and extend that respect to their descendants, to the generations yet unborn, and to all Indigenous people.
Brad Brock Director, School of Theatre Florida State University Kris Salata Chair, School of Theatre Florida State UniversityAs one of the top-tier theatre training programs in the nation, the School of Theatre at Florida State provides its students with a wide variety of theatrical and educational opportunities. The primary mission of the School of Theatre is to offer students a comprehensive education in theatre and to prepare emerging artists to enter the professional theatre industry. As a result, the School of Theatre provides both student artists and community audience members a diverse array of productions that explore the spectrum of our shared humanity.
Founded in 1973 under the vision and leadership of then-Dean Richard G. Fallon, the School of Theatre enjoys a national reputation, in large part, because of the excellence of its undergraduate and graduate programs, as well as a gifted faculty of nationally recognized professional artists and educators. The London Theatre Studies program, the chance to work side by side with guest artists and eminent scholars, as well as showcase opportunities in New York City and Los Angeles are just a few of the many reasons why students are attracted to our various professional and academic degrees from all over the United States, many foreign countries, and every county in Florida.
Alumni of the program include Broadway stars Christiani Pitts, Montego Glover, and Leslie Flesner, television producer Steven Sears, Emmy Award-winners John Papsidera and John Brace, Broadway producers Heather Provost and Darren Bagert, Playwright and Professor Suzan Zeder, and a host of talented entertainment industry professionals. Through their creative work, research, publication, and service, School of Theatre alumni contribute to the commercial, educational, and cultural life of the citizens of Florida and the nation.
The School of Theatre at Florida State is a member of the University/Resident Theatre Association, Inc. and is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Theatre.

Once upon a time there was a little girl who watched intently as a butterfly was breaking out of its cocoon. As she observed the struggle, she wanted to help, so she began gently picking away at the chrysalis shell until the butterfly was released. However, much to her dismay, the butterfly flopped out of its cocoon and died prematurely because it was unable to fly. Unfortunately, the little girl’s act of seeming kindness had robbed the butterfly the chance to develop its wings. For it was only through the struggle that its wings could acquire their strength.
The Secret in the Wings is a coming-of-age play that deals with themes of transformation, hardship, and parent/child relationships. We journey through fragmented, lesser-known fairytales that are darker than usual and that are presented using a variety of different theatrical conventions. Song, dance, mime, and transformational acting reveal that the secret behind the wings is found in the struggle that occurs as a child transitions into adulthood. In order to achieve this metamorphosis, Zimmerman encourages us to embrace what is scary and difficult, because as is quoted in the play, “perhaps everything that frightens us, is in its deepest essence, something helpless that wants our love.”
The children argue whether their shadows are real or just an ogre that is hiding in the wings, emphasizing the idea that we each have a hidden part of ourselves that we want to keep concealed. However, unless we expose it and deal with our shadow-selves, we can never truly move on and grow. The structure of the play, one that fans out (like a wing), also speaks to an arrested metamorphosis, with stories hanging suspended, dangling in time before they can be resolved later on, a transformation in progress.
It is our hope in the telling of these intricate tales, that every audience member is not only entertained, but also challenged. Although the darkness threatens to overwhelm us, we can choose to face it rather than run from it, and by exposing the secrets that hide in the shadowy areas of our soul, we may find that we gain a new sense of freedom and strength.
A caterpillar inside a cocoon is in the dark, and it is only in these deep and painful recesses that it can fully develop into all it was meant to be. So that one day, once its wings are fully grown, it can break out of its chrysalis cage and fly into the light.

We see fairytales as cautionary stories. Regardless of where we come from, we read these tales and take away a moral or two, often presented to us neatly tied up in a pretty bow. That’s why fairytales are so unique in their universality. Every culture and tradition might have their own version of a tale, but the takeaways remain largely the same.
Mary Zimmerman weaves together traditionally unfamiliar tales, allowing us to experience these stories anew without prior bias or attachment to any of them, especially the key players in each of the tales. She brings to life the dark, the mysterious, and the evocative. Every member of the ensemble depicts a different role in each of the tales, thus exemplifying the universality of fairytales in a diverse sense. Together, they bring us into their world of familiar characters and creatures—beauties and beasts, wicked stepmothers and stern fathers, kings and queens, princes and princesses, snakes and swans—but at times, they might feel a little too familiar. And that is at the core of Zimmerman’s intentions: delving deeper into these familiar in-betweens and unwrapping what we store away as adolescents, only to have the memories of our childhood and youth catch up to us as adults.
The Secret in the Wings acknowledges the vulnerability that adolescents—especially, adolescent girls— feel as they navigate the grey areas. The two-part structure of most of the tales presented in the play warrant that the actions of the past have consequences in the future. It’s not necessarily horrific and violent nor is it purely jovial and carefree.
