Southbourne-on-Sea News Local news from around the area New Co-Operative Store at Southbourne Crossroads Civic chiefs approved plans for a new Co-Op in Belle Vue Road Southbourne, despite some protests from local residents and business owners. The planning board heard that there had been seven letters of objection and a petition containing 336 signatures against turning the former ‘Beds R Uzz’ store into a convenience store. The site is on local bus routes and will also service tourists in the summer as it is very near the cliff top. The store will trade from 7am until 11pm. The members of the Planning Board voted in favour of the scheme unanimously. Artwork Project Underway in Southbourne High Street A young local artist has been commissioned to paint a mural at 48 Southbourne Grove. The large commercial unit has been closed for a number of years and is considered an eyesore by many local residents and business owners. However, the new artwork has been started by Annika Garratt with the help of the local business association, who are funding the materials for the project. We spoke to Annika about the exciting project, “I’m really glad to be part of this project and have a lot of ideas about how to fill the space. Everyone who I've spoken to has been very interested in what’s going on and there’s a lot of support locally for doing something with this building.” Be sure to keep an eye on the developments as Annika adds to the mural in the coming weeks. Let us know what you think about the artwork, email info@southbourne.net

Homemade and Baked in Store Welcoming Pete’s Pantry

Southbourne’s unique arrangement of individual stores has been complimented with the addition of Pete’s Pantry. We spoke to new owners Andi and Pete who officially opened on Monday 2nd May 2011, “We’re extremely glad to be set up in Southbourne after a few weeks of hard work getting everything ready. We had looked at a couple of other locations in Boscombe and Winton but decided Southbourne was the place for us, due to its unique character and atmosphere.” Pete’s Pantry offers a selection of cakes, teas, coffees, sandwiches and a welcoming environment for residents and visitors to the area. “Pete has been a chef for the past 10 years and we are both very keen on sourcing as much of our produce from local suppliers as possible. It helps keep our costs down and the quality is excellent. We see Pete’s Pantry as a hub for the local community and hope that we can give a little back to Southbourne”, explained Andi.

Business Update

9

from Heather Martyn (SoSBA)

There are exciting times ahead here in Southbourne-on-Sea. With new businesses opening and a large art project in the making, there is plenty to encourage visitors, as well as locals, in to Southbourne-on-Sea. It is a pleasure to report that we have two businesses within the Southbourne-on-Sea Business Association (SoSBA) up for Women in Business Employer of the year award. Roger Tilley at Tanner and Tilley and Des Simmons at Bournecoast have been nominated and we wish them both good luck. This is a proud achievement for both teams as it is the only category that can be won by a man. Coincidentally, both businesses are Southbourne based. Roger Tilley of Tanner & Tilley and Des Simmons of Bournecoast were both initially voted for by the women in their respective organisations for the support received in their working environments, flexibility and support to family situations. Both Roger and Des are overjoyed to have got this far and whilst both would love to win, they are glad that it is a local business colleague that is also in the running. When questioned on how they felt about reaching the final, both Des and Roger commented, “We are absolutely delighted to get this far and for two businesses in the same business district this is great news. If you have any ideas you wish to share then you can contact me on info@sosba.co.uk or 07879 410235 during office hours.

Murder at The Beach Hut...

12

...followed by curry and a quiz?

Murder was afoot at the Beach Hut cafe on Belle Vue Road in Southbourne. But don’t panic, it was all part of a murder mystery night, the first in a line of events at the popular new eatery. On arrival the cast mingled with the dinner guests. A group of actors performed the murder playlets between the three courses of the Italian dinner. The evening culminated in the arrival of ‘ the inspector’ and the guests trying to guess who the murderer was. This was followed by a prize for the best detectives. All in all a great fun evening with intrigue, laughs and good food. The next event is a Curry & Quiz Night on the 15th June at 7pm. £6 to include curry and a glass of wine, lager or soft drink. Quiz Entry £1 each winner takes all! Book now on 01202 430418.

Beach Police

Southbourne Beach to get dedicated PCSO

A dedicated Police Community Support Officer (PCSO) will patrol Southbourne Beach, during the busy summer period, as part of an initiative to keep people safe. The Beach PCSO will deal with community safety issues and advise members of the public how they can keep themselves and their possessions safe while enjoying the beach. Under the initiative, which will run until September this year, the PCSO will work closely with Dorset Police, the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) and Bournemouth Borough Council. The Beach PCSO’s patrols will be in addition to routine patrols carried out by Safer Neighbourhood and response officers on the beach. The initiative was run on Bournemouth Beach last year and has been extended to beaches across the conurbation following its success. Incidents that were dealt with by the Beach PCSOs last summer included cyclists riding on the promenade, underage drinking and anti-social behaviour. Posters will be put up along the promenade to remind members of the public which numbers to call if they need to speak to a police officer, PCSO, lifeguard or beach warden. The Southbourne Safer Neighbourhood Team will also be holding a regular advice point at the Beach Office on Southbourne promenade. This will allow residents and visitors to raise any community safety, crime or anti-social behaviour issues and have a say on the team’s priorities. The advice point will be held every Tuesday between 10am and 12pm; every Friday between 3.30pm and 5pm; and every Saturday between 10am and 1pm during the summer. For more information call the Southbourne Safer Neighbourhood Team on 07825522687 or 01202 222222 (non-emergency calls only - dial 999 in an emergency) or visit: www.dorset.police.uk.

Personalised Jewellery

Chamilia at Sugar Mango

Chamilia, a contemporary twist on the traditional charm bracelet, is without a doubt a must-have accessory. Sugar Mango is the only local stockist in Bournemouth who supplies a full Chamilia range in store. Alison Timmons told us a bit more about the stunning range available, “We carry a large selection in stock and have over 500 beads to view. They’re so unique as you can create your very own bracelet that will be unique to you, your style and your outfit!” The range of Chamilia beads use Swarovski Elements, Italian Murano glass, coloured stones, 925 sterling silver and 14k gold from the exclusive Disney Collection. Each bead is designed by Killian Reider who has a detailed background in both fashion and designing. Alison told us more about the customisation available, “Women can create a wish list of their favourite beads and add to their collection gradually, or come into our store and see what they look like before making a decision.” Sugar Mango is a well established business in Southbourne and offers a boutique style with their own unique selection of gem stones and silver jewellery also on offer, which Alison creates on her trips to India. Alison and Heather are extremely glad to welcome Tanya into the team at Sugar Mango and want to invite residents and visitors to come and say hello whilst sampling the beautiful range of gifts and accessories. So if you’re looking for a unique gift or wish to add to your Chamilia bracelet, take a trip to Sugar Mango on Southbourne Grove. Open Monday to Saturday 9:30am to 5:00pm or 24/7 online at www.sugarmango.com

Popular Southbourne store Little People recently underwent a full refurbishment. We spoke to owners Dayne & Sahra who told us more. “We have really opened up the shop floor space making it much more accessible for customers plus their buggies and prams.
