A large scale project which aims to improve access along the Stour Valley corridor between Hengistbury Head Nature Reserve and Millhams Mead is about to start. The work will initially focus on the section between Hengistbury Head and Tuckton. As well as better signs and gateways the improvements will bring us greater viewing opportunities through to Christchurch Harbour and Hengistbury Head and better accessibility for all. The work between Hengistbury Head and Tuckton will cost £575,000 and is being funded from Heathland Mitigation, a charge specifically levied on developers to minimise their impact on internationally Traditional Beach Huts important habitats in South East Dorset. The Stour Valley Local Nature Reserve is a popular wildlife spotting area; kingfishers, dragonflies, and butterflies are regularly seen and even the elusive otter has occasionally been observed. Councillor Lawrence Williams, said, “The Stour Valley corridor is very popular with residents and visitors, so it’s vital that we make sure the route along here is more accessible so that it can be enjoyed in years to come. We want everyone to have the chance to explore and experience the nature and wildlife which we are so lucky to have in Bournemouth.”

12 Southbourne’s Music Scene Winter 2014 Local Music Guide
Aaron Gregory is a Bournemouth based singer and songwriter who has been described by Rock Regeneration as a pillar of the local music scene. Each edition Aaron brings us his round up of the best live music on offer locally. Photo by Grant David Read © 2013
Wow! What a wonderful few months it has been for music. The chart topping Royal Blood have wrestled through the auto tuned mainstream pop acts and reality show winners and proven that people are still excited by talented, thoughtful and well-crafted musicians. Birmingham’s current scene has brought us amazing new acts like Peace, Superfood and Jaws - all of which have played at small venues in Bournemouth recently. They have proven that young bands and artists with something to say are starting to appear, and mean business. Bournemouth is no different at the moment and there is an amazing array of bands on the verge of breaking big. The likes of Saturday Sun, Beth Johnstone, Annie Winter, Beartown Zodiac, Powdered Cows, Empire Affair, Xander Allen and The Keys, Drew Allen and Peace, Love and Gloves have been putting on storming shows all year and are beginning to back it up with cracking records too. What better time then to start checking out your local live music scenes and catching these artists on the way up. Imagine saying to your friends that you saw Laura Marling and Foals at Sixty Million Postcards with only 100 people in the venue (these gigs did happen!) or you saw John Cooper Clarke at The Winchester. The gigs don’t show any sign of slowing for the winter either. Bombay Bicycle Club If you jump on the bus from Southbourne to the BIC on December 5th then you will be met with the colourful forward thinking sounds of Bombay Bicycle Club. They have just been nominated for the Mercury Prize
13
with their fourth album “So Long See You Tomorrow”. It is truly a stunning record and a great opportunity to see one of the best bands of the current era. Other unmissable shows at the BIC include Ska legends Madness on the 9th December and recent Glastonbury head-liners Kasabian on the 25th November. More locally in Southbourne there are some great shows on offer for free at The Grove Tavern. On November 15th local favourites Fearne are dusting off their guitars to play a hit packed set as a duo. Fearne have supported the likes of Feeder and Athlete and played this years Purbeck Folk Festival. They are definitely worth dedicating a Saturday evening to at your local.

Black Water County
At The Grove on December 20th you’ll find Black Water County. They have played a whole host of festivals this summer and you can expect lots of dancing as you begin your Christmas celebrations. Kadia
Just across the road from The Grove is The Larderhouse, live music is still being booked for your enjoyment every Thursday evening. They hand-pick excellent acts and recent stand out guests were folk favourites Kadia. The Larderhouse always has a great vibe and as winter closes in their mulled cider goes down a treat, especially when served alongside fresh crackling. Thanks for taking the time to read my page, I hope you all enjoy your Christmas. I also hope you will get the chance to hear some live music prior to that and I look forward to keeping you up to date in the New Year.

Promotions at local business
Dorset based Domestic Angels has recently promoted two of its Angels to team leaders as the business goes from strength to strength. Operations Director Sam Acton took the decision to promote Marie Raggett and Lisa Cooper so she could utilise their ever growing skill bases and also move the business forward strategically without her being so hands on day to day. There are twenty angels and Domestic Angels is a Venus regional and National award winner for Home Based Businesses and Sam is a home business champion, and having 20 staff members all employed and being paid holiday goes to show that the days of cottage industry type home businesses are long gone. Lisa and Marie have both been with the firm over 5 years and are both dedicated to Sam and the Domestic Angels brand. Commenting after the promotion Lisa said, “I joined the Angels after having my daughter Milly and was able to fit in my hours around childcare needs, I am delighted with my promotion I feel so privileged that Sam has the faith in me to help her run the company and we have just recruited 3 new members of staff. I recently appeared on Radio Solent to discuss my role and this was so nerve wracking but just goes to show how my role has evolved and I am happy to be part of a thriving business in a period of such growth especially bearing in mind Sam runs it all from home “ Marie also commented, “I am really pleased to have been progressed like this and love the fact I am constantly learning new skills, I love working with the Angels and every day is completely different. We of course sign confidentiality agreements so there are no horror stories to share!“ Sam Acton added, ”These changes are in order to evolve the infrastructure of the business in order to obtain more growth. Helping … in your home This growth helps absorb auto enrolment, Domestic Cleaning wages and changes in legislation which Home Help lead to extra overheads. This means I can Holiday Home Cleaning concentrate on growing our domestic Spring Cleaning clean side of the business whilst Lisa and Marie concentrate on business Call now for a free, no obligation consultation 01202 267350 or e-mail hello@domestic-angels.com development and recruitment.”

Classic Christmas Pudding Recipe Nothing beats homemade
Good Christmas puddings take time. This recipe should ideally be made over two days. On the first day mix the ingredients. On the second day prepare the bowls and steam the puddings. This will make one 2lb / 900g pudding or two 1lb / 450g puddings. Mix the sultanas, currants, raisins and peel together in a large bowl. Stir in the breadcrumbs, sugar, suet and lemon rind. Blanch the almonds by pouring boiling water over the nuts and then leave them to stand for a few minutes. The skins will now come off easily. Chop the almonds fairly finely and add to the fruit. Sift the flour, salt and spices together. Beat the eggs and add the lemon juice and stout/beer to them. Add the flour and egg mixture to the other ingredients and mix all well together. Leave overnight. Next day, brush the bowl with melted butter and fill with the pudding mixture. Cover the basin with greaseproof paper, pleated across the top, and tie with string. Steam the large pudding for at least eight hours, or the smaller ones for six hours. When the pudding is cold, re-cover it with fresh greaseproof paper, and store it in a cool, dry place. Serve with a sprig of holly and either brandy (lit of course!) or double cream.
Ingredients 200g plain flour 3 free range eggs 200g currants, washed 200g sultanas, washed 200g raisins, stoned and chopped 100g mixed peel, chopped 200g breadcrumbs 200g demerara sugar 200g shredded suet 1 lemon, finely grated rind & juice 100g almonds pinch of salt nutmeg, cinnamon, mixed spice 275ml of old beer or stout

20 There’s no place like home Home care specialist Promedica24 in Southbourne
Home is not a place many of us would leave by choice but live-in care services provide the support and companionship you need, enabling you to stay in your own home and community as you get older. As everyday tasks become more difficult, often the reality of living at home comes into question. Many people have lived in the same home for most of their adult life and the idea of having to move into residential care is a scary prospect, especially as it means moving away from the community they know and love. Live-in care offers people the choice to retain a sense of independence as an alternative to moving into a care home. In lots of ways, it is like having a live-in housekeeper who also knows a good deal about health and well-being. Independence, comfort and familiar surroundings are all so important to people as they get older and it doesn’t have to be something you give up. With live-in care you can have a trained carer with you around the clock, but fitting into your life, allowing you to remain independent and comfortable. There are usually different levels of support offered by live-in care providers, varying according to your needs. Live-in care can provide services such as: • Help with day-to-day leisure activities and assistance at night • Help getting around/visiting friends and family • Working alongside District Nurses and other specialists • Shopping & collecting prescriptions • Help with cooking and cleaning/ Preparing specialist diets • Help with personal care, getting washed and dressed • Help and support with continence care • Collecting prescription and prompting to take medication • Helping with mobility – provide assurance for a person to use a walking frame • Providing support to a person with dementia who is prone to being confused, disorientated and would be unsafe to spend long periods of time alone, risk of leaving gas on • Making appointments for GP, Optician, and Chiropodist • Working under direction of the District Nurses to change simple dressing, apply creams • Taking responsibility for management of the person’s medication, ensuring medication is in date • Rehabilitation following hospital admission following a fall, operation Companies like Promedica24 are able to make live-in care a viable, positive and affordable alternative to residential care and can offer better value than most UK nursing and care homes.
22 Board at Christmas? Edward and Connie have the solution
Disconnect the computer, close the laptop, and turn off the tablet. If you want games to help your child learn, board games are a wonderful hands-on alternative. There are the classics like chess, Go, Scrabble, Cluedo, and Parcheesi, which help children detect patterns, plan ahead, predict outcomes and learn from experience. They also enhance numeracy and literacy skills and they have the additional benefit of family interaction. These old standards are excellent and should be dusted off and brought out for the holidays. Here are a few other ideas for presents which are fun, engaging and encourage thinking and learning. Set is an award winning, addictive card game recommended for ages six and older. It fosters success and kids love it because they can beat their parents. It is a matching game that can also be played solo. Set is an excellent and fun way to develop pattern recognition and number sense. It is also used at university level for teaching genetics and maths concepts. Numenko is simple to set up, resembling a Scrabble board. It fosters an understanding of basic arithmetic and also sharpens logic. There are various ways to play the game requiring different skill levels. Forbidden Island is a strategy game that is cooperative rather than competitive; players must work together to win. Teams set out to capture hidden treasures and then make an escape. It comes packaged in a sturdy tin. Bananagrams is a word game we’ve enjoyed with our family at home and on holidays with other families. It is a wonderful game for children and adults who enjoy crosswords and word games. It helps develop phonics decoding, sight words and spelling for younger children, as well as strategy, creativity and spelling for all ages. Connie and Edward have these games and more in the learning centre for students and siblings to play on breaks. You are welcome to come in and try them. 24 November is Mouth Cancer Appointments Action Month New! Saturday & Evening plus specialManor reader’s offers at Shelley Dental
Shelley Manor Dental is getting behind Mouth Cancer Action Month this November to help check for symptoms of a disease that, without early detection, could claim 30,000 lives over the next decade. Organised by the British Dental Health Foundation and sponsored by Denplan, Mouth Cancer Action Month promotes the message ‘if in doubt, get checked out’ in a bid to save thousands of lives through early detection. Mouth cancer can often be spotted in its early stages by a dentist during a mouth examination and, if caught early, there is a 90% chance of survival. Dental teams are also in the ideal position to share information about the risks and symptoms of mouth cancer with their patients. With this in mind Shelley Manor Dental are welcoming the general public for a free mouth cancer check throughout November. Note that existing patients already receive a mouth cancer examination as part of every routine check up. The mouth cancer check involves a soft tissue check as well as discussing any concerns the patient may have such as mouth ulcers that haven’t healed within three weeks, red or white patches or other unusual lumps or swellings in their mouth. “It is well documented that early detection saves lives”, said Dr Nigel Carter OBE, Chief Executive of the British Dental Health Foundation. The number of people diagnosed with mouth cancer in the UK has significant increased over the last decade, with latest figures showing 6,767 new cases a year (Cancer Research UK 2014). Take advantage of the free mouth cancer checks taking place at Shelley Manor Dental this November. To book call 01202 443882.

Veronica feels whatever setbacks they have gone through, she would have gone through the same and come out the other side, "What I'm hoping for is that they'll learn to love and be more confident about themselves, make new friends, realise the world isn't as bad as it looks and women together can be a mighty force."
