Den of Delights Daisy’s Den brings quality craft to the high street
Opened in May 2014, Daisy’s Den is a little shop with a lot to offer. The store is full of all those gorgeous things that brighten up your home. We met up with owner Hazel Burnett to find out more about the den and have a good look round the great stuff on offer. Previously a Bournemouth hotelier, Hazel knows what makes a warm and welcoming space. “We have already gained some regular customers who love our range of shabby chic gifts and homewares”, says Hazel. Hazel has sourced a wonderful mix of products, many locally crafted in Bournemouth and Poole. Best sellers include bespoke signs by Bevs Crafts, surf mirrors by Wayne Willetts, local Mudeford printed cushions by Annie Taylor and some charming characters including cats and monkeys from ‘Just Made It’. Our favourite was a range of ceremaic owls seen below. This is just a taster, there’s lots more in store. Daisy’s Den is yet another reason to visit Seabourne Road, a sometimes overlooked area of Southbourne that’s definitely on the up. Many previously empty units are now occupied and the variety of independent and useful shops is impressive.

Create It All Celebrates 1st Anniversary for Crafting Workshop
We met up with Lauren from Create It All to celebrate her first year trading and find out what’s new at the creative crafting centre. She told us, “Our sewing workshops are very popular, as are our crochet. Our adult and children’s birthday parties are extremely popular. We offer bespoke parties for both adult and children. Join us on Saturday 2 August as we are having a number of taster workshops as well as our drop in workshops. Have a look at our Facebook page and our website for more details.” We asked what her favourite memory from the last year was, “My favourite memory is meeting so many lovely people. Being able to share my passion for crafting with customers who have become friends. Seeing the delight and pride when they have created an article of desire that they did not think possible. Having the opportunity to work with a range of adults who have disabilities and also holding workshops in a care home whose residents have dementia was very rewarding.” We ask Lauren how she thinks Seabourne Road has changed over the year? “Since I opened the shop on Seabourne Road, the number of independent shops has certainly increased. In time I am hoping that Seabourne Road will become as popular as the Grove. If you’ve not walked up into Seabourne Road in a while come and see what you are missing.” And finally who better to ask about Create It All than some actual customers. “Ruby and Olivia had a joint birthday party here. The girls had a lovely time and the bird houses that they decoupaged turned out beautifully. Lauren is very helpful and the afternoon looked like so much fun that I've booked my birthday party there too :-)” - Kelly Ramdharry “Had a lovely day at Create It All, warm and friendly, left feeling like I had spent the afternoon with friends having a good chat and making some lovely crafts. I wish I lived closer! ” - Hannah Penfold “Thank you for the great workshop, love my new lampshade and had a lot of fun making it, I will be back!” - Karen Merryweather

Southbourne’s Music Scene Aaron Gregory’s Local Music Guide
About Aaron Gregory Aaron is a Bournemouth based singer songwriter who has been described by Rock Regeneration as a pillar of the local music scene. Photo by Grant David Read © 2013
What an amazing couple of months we have to reflect on in Southbourne since the last time I wrote. There have been some amazing events that have coloured the area with fun, frolics and wonderful music. June saw the return of the Shake and Stir Festival. This event has become very popular as it puts on many fantastic vintage performances and arts over a weekend. I was very privileged to witness much of the festival and I have written a full review at www.dorsetforum.com in case you were thinking of putting it in the calendar for next year. There are some fantastic live music events in Southbourne over the summer months of July and August. Starting at The Grove in Southbourne on August the 2nd local legends Fearne will be playing a free show. Fearne Fearne have got a massive reputation in the south and rightly so. Following support slots with the likes of Feeder and Athlete, Fearne have been also a regular fixture at the local festivals such as Purbeck Folk Festival and Folk on the Quay. They released their newest album this year and it is a real treat and if you want to check them out you can at: www.fearnemusic.co.uk Also coming to The Grove this month is the truly amazing Ski Daddle. Ski Daddle is the mastermind behind possibly the best live music night in the south, Shindig. Shindig is as the title suggests the best place to
11 www.facebook.com/aarongregorymusic
strap on your cowboy boots and dance yourself merry to an array of fab cowpunk acts. Ski’s very own act the Jimmy Hillbillies have been booked for almost every festival this summer so to have Ski performing on August the 30th is a great coup for the Grove. I Jimmy Hillbillies truly recommend the evening and any shindig events. They are always great fun and provide the perfect party atmosphere.
Black Water Country
that needs to be put in the diary.
Other gigs to watch out for are Black Water Country on the 24th and ‘Introducer’ every Monday evening. Introducer is a night that offers the perfect come down after a busy weekend and showcases the south’s best acoustic acts in a candlelit environment. This is another show
The Larderhouse is continuing to book fantastic acoustic acts for Thursday evenings and The Spyglass and Kettle continues to deliver live music on Fridays and Saturdays. The Commodore has also begun to put on acoustic shows too, recently having George Holloway playing a storming set. As always things are pretty exciting in Southbourne, make sure you give yourself the opportunity to experience some of this excitement. Hope you have an amazing summer. Mayor Opens New Southbourne Hotel Cliff House Hotel an oasis of calm
Bournemouth's new Mayor and Southbourne local Chris Mayne officially opened the beautiful new Cliff House Hotel in Southbourne on Friday 6th June. The sun was shining and a large crowd of invited VIPs attended the opening. With a generous quantity of wine, Champagne and amazing canapés on offer we had a wonderful afternoon checking out the stunning interior, rooms and grounds of the new accommodation. Dating back to the 1880s, Cliff House Hotel has been called home by countless happy families over the years, and at one time was even a boys’ school. During extensive renovations in 2003, a team of professional architects and interior designers first stripped the 120 year old building back to its barest form, before painstakingly rebuilding it to see it through the next 100 years in style. And now, the building’s bar, lounge and gardens have been given a fresh new makeover to keep it up to date with the changing times. Managing Director Andrew Gosling told us, “Each of our 14 en-suite, light and airy rooms has been individually and sympathetically designed in order to be an inviting oasis of calm, while still showcasing the historic charm and character of the 19th century former homestead.” A haven for foodies too For 24 years Andrew and his London-based catering and events company, Food Show Ltd, have expertly organised and created spectacular dishes for all manner of events and parties. Their food philosophy has always been simple: to source high quality, seasonal produce, tracing its journey from farm to plate, for unbeatable taste and freshness. This philosophy now inspires the culinary team at Cliff House Hotel - passionate and skilled innovators who pride themselves on their delicious, elegant dishes, and fresh ideas.
