Introducing Bournemouth’s Next Mayor We have a chat with Southbourne’s very own Chris Mayne

Life long Bournemouth resident and councillor Chris Mayne is to be made the 2014/15 Mayor of Bournemouth. We met up with Chris at The Grove Tavern to find out more about the man and the mayorship. We asked what being made Mayor means to Chris, “It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity and a life-long ambition”, he explained. “Growing up I’ve always seen other people being made mayor and now I’m over the moon to be asked to be mayor. I am happy to be putting something back into the community I come from. I always says it’s people before politics.” Having grown up in the area, including a stint as head chorister at St Peters Church in Bournemouth, Chris ran a newsagent called Central Avenue News from 1981 - a location used by the BBC for an episode of ‘One Foot in The Grave’ - Victor can be seen running with a hand-grenade in the picture on the right! After that his local knowledge really came in handy working for a taxi/private hire company. Chris has been a local councillor since 2003. A keen sports fan, Chris has been involved in the local sports scene for 40 years, including being the current president of the Bournemouth Evening Cricket League. Music is Chris’ other passion being actively involved in the local scene, including events at Fisherman’s Walk and last year’s Shake and Stir Festival.

© 1989 BBC - One Foot In The Grave

Meeting Chris on a sunny afternoon in Southbourne, we asked what he thinks makes Southbourne such a great place to work and live, “It’s got a great mix of shops with many independents. There’s something for everyone it’s a nice blend. This plus the excellent location near the sea front.”

13

One difference Chris has noticed over the years is the decreasing number of hotels and B&Bs, “There used to be more accommodation on offer, I think there is a gap in the market.” We asked what Chris can do to benefit Southbourne as Mayor, “It’s about promoting the positives of the area and raising awareness of music, sport and other events”. We asked what Chris thinks are the main challenges facing Southbourne over the coming year, “I think it’s a case of maintaining the success of recent years.” says Chris. “It’s keeping shop occupancy up and ensuring a clean and pleasant environment for residents and visitors to the area.” Chris will continue to be the West Southbourne councillor during his time as Mayor and the current mayor, Councillor Rod Cooper, will become deputy mayor when Chris becomes the first citizen in May. Did You Know? The Mayor is a ‘public relations officer’ for the town and must therefore be non-political during their term in office. As the Mayor, Chris takes precedence over all persons within the Borough - including visiting Lord Mayors, Mayors and Town Mayors. The only exception is for Members of the Royal Family and HM Lord-Lieutenant of Dorset. The Mayor is the First Citizen of Bournemouth and represents the Council, all political groups and the people of Bournemouth. Mayor-Making Ceremony - Your Invitation The Mayor-Making Ceremony is being held on Friday 30th May. The event is taking place at the Pavilion Theatre and members of the public are welcome to attend. Everyone must be seated by 11am and the doors will close at 11.05am. The ceremony usually finishes by 12.30pm. The Annual Civic Service to welcome the new Mayor is then held at St Peter's Church on Sunday 1st June at 10.30am. The Civic Party, in full robes, processes to Bournemouth's St. Peter's for the start of the Service. If you’d like any more information about either event please call the Mayor's PA on 01202 451117.

Southbourne’s Music Scene Aaron Gregory’s Local Music Guide

About Aaron Gregory Aaron is a Bournemouth based singer songwriter who has been described by Rock Regeneration as a pillar of the local music scene. Aaron has a headline show at O’Neill’s in Bournemouth on Thursday 27th May. Photo by Grant David Read © 2013

I really cannot believe that I am writing the May/June section for Southbourne music already. It is absolutely mind blowing the pace that the year is travelling at, though it is probably assisted by the fact there is always something to look forward to as a local resident of Southbourne. May and June could probably rival any couple of R N E ’S H BOU months of the year for excitement when it comes SOUT to music. This is mainly because the sun is beginning to shine and there is no better scene for live music than the bandstand set in the SE A ST GE FE beautiful Fisherman’s Walk gardens. This leads V IN TA me to the first big festival of the summer in the local area. Southbourne for its second year will welcome back the highly popular Shake and Stir Festival. Talking from experience this is a fun packed weekend full of all things vintage. During the festival activities are planned from the high street into Fisherman’s Walk and onto the cliff top. With fantastic headlining acts Laura B & The Moonlighters, Ding Dong Daddios & The Regular Joes, dance classes, a vintage fair, classic cars and military vehicles, there is something for everyone. The music itself is focused on the feel good vibes of swing and jive so you had better dust off your dancing shoes and put the 20th 22nd June in your diary. Find out more about the festival on page 6. Laura B & The Moonlighters C OA ST

A huge date in your diary should be reserved for the May bank holiday weekend of the 24th, 25th and 26th of May as the inaugural Wheels Festival will be taking place all over Bournemouth. This is going to be a massive festival and a great opportunity for families to have a fantastic free day out to look at some classic motors, take part in some fun activities and of course enjoy some live music, including music and entertainment by the sea with spectacular firework shows on Saturday and Monday evenings from 10pm. For listings see www.bournemouthwheels.co.uk Now to the weekly events in the vibrant Mischa and his Merry Men high street of Southbourne, the fantastic restaurant/bar that is The Larderhouse has started to put music on the menu on a Thursday evening. Every Thursday they handpick the finest local musicians for you to enjoy over some of the world’s best wines and ciders. The evening offers a lovely stripped back feel in wonderfully unique surroundings and is going to be very popular. Some of the acts they’ve already had include local favourites Drew Allen and Beth Johnstone. I definitely recommend making the journey down to one of the Thursday evenings with a highlight being Mischa and his Merry Men on May 8th. The Grove continues to deliver live music four nights a week (Friday/Saturday/Sunday/Monday) and all of the nights are massively popular. Forthcoming highlights Fearne include Fearne on 24th May, The Reptiles on June 28th and Drew Allen on May 18th. Have an excellent start to the summer, lets hope it brings lots of sunshine and memories.

My Sewing Box Introducing a new local business to Southbourne

My Sewing Box is a new local business set up by local sewing enthusiasts based in Southbourne. Angela Gilbert and her daughter Amy Gilbert came up with the idea after struggling to source quality and original fabrics locally for their own handmade products. Angela has researched the craft market during her business studies degree and put together a business plan for the idea. She recently graduated from the OU with BA (Hons) Business Studies – see photo with Amy who is just finishing an English degree at University of York, and hopes to work on the marketing and PR for the new business. Angela explains further, “My Sewing Box is a new website that sets out to supply everything you need to complete crafty textile projects, from inspiration to practical equipment and fabrics as well as tips and tricks for beginners. We will suggest and source suitable fabrics for all our projects posted, so that in a few small clicks you can have everything you need in your basket and on the way to your door. No more driving around the shops frustrated trying to find fabrics!” The aim is to encourage a community to share tips and expertise, and creative ideas, through the website and our sewing community online, where people will be able to participate in special offers and deals as part of the community. “We aim to use projects provided by community members to encourage creativeness and supply fabrics and supplies to make these. This will also raise the profile of members and create business success for them. For instance we are looking for original patterns for all kinds of creative products that can be sold through the website”, says Angela. Angela finally adds, “We also wish to set up and support local sewing clubs to enable members to share their experience and participate in local sociable groups where members can get together for a couple of hours at reasonable cost to share experiences and have fun. We also wish to support small local craft producers by creating a business community in the website, offering discounted products, and some help and advice regarding business matters.”
