Southbourne-on-Sea News Local news from around the area

The Seabourne Road area is to get some much Secret 15 Postbox needed attention from the council, starting September, lasting approximately 10 weeks. As part of the council’s Three Towns Travel programme, Seabourne Road has been identified as a major route in need of improvement. The works will cost £225k which is from government funding successfully won by Bournemouth Council. The plan is to ease traffic flow in and around Seabourne Road and to support local businesses by enhancing the environment. Improvements will include resurfacing roads and pavements, better signage, re-allocating on street parking to avoid congestion, and narrowing the Huts Traditional Beach junctions at nearby side roads to improve pedestrian crossing and safety. The Council will also be removing unnecessary signage . Once complete the works will make this particular stretch of Southbourne more attractive for people to shop and visit. Councillor Michael Filer, Cabinet Member for Transport said, “Seabourne Road has been recognised as a key commuter route, and by making these improvements, we can help reduce congestion and enhance the local area. Southbourne is a unique area with a warm community atmosphere and I am delighted we are carrying out these works now, so that we can continue to support this thriving part of town and retain the community atmosphere for our future generations.”

Ride for a Reason Boscombe & Southbourne Rotary Club are holding their second Annual Bike Ride supported by Bournemouth Cycleworks. Keen cyclists will relish the full distance whereas young families can enjoy a short ride and perhaps spend some time on the beach afterwards. The event is in aid of Macmillan Caring Locally and local Rotary charities. Entry fee £5 per rider, under 16’s FREE. Entry forms online. Riders are encouraged to raise sponsorship for which forms are available online www.rotaryrideforareason.org.uk

Southbourne 90 years ago Local guide from 1924

We recently came across a rare gem, the 1924 edition of Ward Lock & Co’s illustrated guide book to Bournemouth. The comprehensive guide includes a section about Southbourne. While many things have changed, we think much of the qualities described in the text below are still present today. THE interesting little resort of Southbourne, with its sometime sub-title "On Sea," seems in appearance and name a resort apart from and independent of Bournemouth. Southbourne is pleasantly situated near to the eastern extremity of Bournemouth Bay, and is within a mile and a half of Christchurch, which lies in the valley beneath. The buses and trams from Boscombe pass through Southbourne, close to the sea, en route to Christchurch, and it can also be approached by rail by way of Pokesdown Station, the nearest station for Southboume proper, from which it is distant about 1¼ miles, or by way of Christchurch Station, at which visitors to Southbourne-on-Sea generally alight. The elevation of this youthful and agreeable seaside resort has done much to win favour for it. It has been aptly described as "A miniature tableland, standing raised above the very margin of the genial Channel Sea, with an absolutely unimpeded exposure to breezes and sunshine." The view embraces both Bournemouth and Christchurch Bays, and extends from Durleston Head, on the coast of Dorset, to Hurst Castle at the entrance to the Solent. Its climate is equable and healthy, and from its high position Southbourne can boast of really bracing air. The soil, consisting of gravel and sand to a good depth, contributes to the bracing qualities of the air. Even after prolonged rain the ground quickly dries, as local pedestrians gratefully testify. The rapid progress of Southbourne will be understood when it is known that not so many years ago it was an untouched sweep of gorse-land, without even the dignity of a name, and possessing neither houses nor roads. Now it has many a row of pleasant dwelling-houses, several hotels and boarding establishments, and the consequent Fisherman’s Walk accompaniment of church and shops.

9

"Southbourne," says a writer, "is the chosen dwelling-place of the most golden gorse one Looking towards Hengistbury Head could wish to see. Acres of glowing gold, stretching inland from the borders of the blue Channel, make the dullest day bright. The cliffs are the safest that can be imagined; children can play on them without fear, and there the worn-out city man may lounge by the delicious meadows stretching across to Christchurch." The walks and drives form an especially pleasant feature among the attractions of Southbourne. The immediately surrounding countryside is picturesque, and the views from the cliffs seaward and the higher ground inland are extensive and beautiful. Also there are few resorts so favourably situated for those whose tastes incline to varying the delights of the seaside by the change of river boating or angling. The row from either Wick Ferry or Tuckton Bridge to the Sheepwash is an attraction not to Southbourne visitors only, but to holiday-makers from relatively distant Bournemouth who count the Stour among the charms that have endeared to them the town and neighbourhood.

Complementary Therapy Welcoming Yemanjá Therapy to Southbourne

Yemanjá Therapy is a new face on Southbourne Grove. The store is dedicated to bringing a large range of holistic therapies together in a calm and tranquil environment. We met up with owner Matt who told us more about the services on offer, “Our in house therapists are fully qualified professionals & many are experienced in more than one type of therapy which enables them to combine different methods & techniques of an intuitive & artistic nature & most of all they are passionate about what they do. The treatments they provide are as individual as you.” There are a wide range of therapies on offer from a number of professional therapists. They also offer flotation therapy pools. Flotation is one of the most effective means of stress relief and relaxation available, a unique therapy using a high concentration of Epsom Salt (natural substance) added to a pool of warm water and is temperature regulated to body temperature (37°C). This enables you to float on the surface of the water much like that of the dead sea and has many physical & mental benefits. The treatments can be used independently or combined along with flotation therapy which makes for a truly relaxing experience so you can relax, unwind and let…… go…….

On Saturday 20th September, The Grove Tavern plays host to Zoë Schwarz Blue Commotion. The group are blues based with very strong catchy riffs and interesting arrangements, performed by a highly distinctive, tight and creative band, providing the perfect vehicle for Zoe’s “incomparable, heart wrenching” vocals. Definately not one to miss. It’s time to get funky on the 4th October at The Grove as Funkaholics play their unique brand of hi-energy funk rock. The trio pay homage to Hendrix, Stevie Wonder, James Brown and the 70's with a disco mix under a heavy rock groove. Fresh back from honeymooning our very own Aaron Gregory is back on stage for a Halloween special show at The Cellar Bar for Ski Daddle’s Shindig event on the 31st of October. After the launch of the band's fourth studio album ‘Luminous’, The Horrors are appearing at O2 Academy on the 23rd Setpember. Their music has been described as everything from garage rock, gothic rock, shoegazing to post-punk revival. Fancy something a little more mainstream? Singer, songwriter, producer, occasional rapper and all round king of the club banger Example is playing the O2 on the 27th October. The Grove Tavern 27 Southbourne Grove, BH6 3QS 01202 430008

24 hour live-in care service Home care specialist Promedica24 comes to Southbourne

Growing old is not something anyone has a choice about. With Promedica24 live-in care solutions, you can still choose how you do it, where and with whom. Promedica24 is making live-in care a viable, positive choice: you or your loved ones can remain comfortable and well cared for, by trained and caring professionals, around the clock, at home, enjoying a high degree of independence and companionship. John Taylor, Operational Care Manager at Promedica24 said, “We have been providing live-in care services across Europe for 10 years and saw a real need for our services in the UK. As we see more and more reports that the long term care industry isn’t meeting the needs or standards of those who rely on it, we wanted to bring a service that provided 24 hour bespoke live in care which enables people to continue with their lifestyle in their own home.” To ensure that its carers provide the highest quality of service, Promedica24 first puts applicants through a stringent interview and approval process. Its carers then embark on a rigorous training process, which includes a course on how to provide the highest standard of care. The main market for the company’s services will be older people living alone and the families who are currently taking care or see the need for care for their relatives. Most people feel more comfortable in the home they may have lived in for years - in fact research carried out by Promedica24 shows that only 12% of people would ever consider moving into a care home if they had to. A further 68% of people surveyed said that they would prefer to have Live-In Care rather than go into a residential home, as they wanted to stay in familiar surroundings, with the friends and neighbours they have got to know over the years. It also means that family, grandchildren and friends can still visit for those Sunday lunches and special occasions. Promedica24’s fees for their service fall into three simple and transparent price brackets and each care package is carefully tailored based on an assessment by Promedica24 of the person in need of care. There are no hidden charges involved. Everything from daily routines and prompts for taking medication to likes and dislikes is covered and a family can get full support in making sure they chose the care package right for them and the person on the receiving end.

Success at School Edward and Connie from NumberWorks ‘n Words

Contrary to popular belief, there is strong evidence that intelligence is not fixed or determined by your ancestors, but can develop and grow with work. The latest research comes from Stanford University and is catching on in progressive schools. Simple and consistent interventions make a difference for our children’s success at school. Goal setting is one way to achieve marked learning progress.

• Develop goals with your child. They will more likely achieve something which they “own”. • Create goals that are achievable. Difficult hurdles are laudable, but failure in meeting the goal will be discouraging and may lead to a downward spiral where goal setting, progress and achievement are lost. Setting some simple short-term goals that can be met will lead to setting higher goals, including long-term goals. • “Be specific” is a mantra our writing students can recite. Vague goals, like “I want to be rich” or “I want to be the best in my class”, are dreams, not goals. Change your words – change your mind set and set yourself up for success in school • Change “I’m not good at this”  “I’m not good at this yet” • Change “This is too hard”  “This will take some work and help” • Change “Oh no! I made a mistake”  “Mistakes help me learn” • Change “I can’t do maths”  “I’m going to train my brain to do maths” Call Connie and Edward if you have any questions or if there is any way they can help your children advance their learning and support their school work. Call 01202 433673 or write to bournemouth@numberworks.com

Hair loss needn’t be frightening New trichology services in Southbourne

Shelley Manor Medical Centre, on Beechwood Avenue, is adding trichology to it’s list of disciplines. We spoke to Gina Lourens, who is a practicing, registered member of the Institute of Trichology and the Trichological Society, to find out more about the service she offers. “It begins with a full analysis and understanding of the hair loss. This clarifies the type of hair loss being experienced. Each of us generally looses around 120 hairs a day naturally, so when you experience more rapid, or chronic, hair shedding it can be frightening”, explains Gina. Being able to take charge of your condition, knowing the choices, helps you take control and even reverse the excessive hair shedding. Hair loss doesn’t need to lead to baldness. Unfortunately the ultimate reaction to many illnesses, hormonal imbalance, drug interaction and side effects, mechanical and chemical procedures, is hair loss. Gina adds, “It’s my duty as a trichologist to seek out what is contributing to your hair loss and work on an individual treatment, tailored for you.” Gina will help work out what’s important to you. Hair products, a wig, hair transplant, medications to reverse genetic hair loss or making the connection with foods (vitamins and minerals), are all tools that can be investigated. Although trichology addresses the science of the hair and scalp even a healthy head of hair can benefit from analysis to help maintain that healthiness over time. Gina is available for appointments from 8.30am on Wednesdays, call for an initial discussion on 01202 309421 or 07779 420205.
