3D Printing Comes to Southbourne The 3d Print House opens on Seabourne Road
3D printing has been in the news rather a lot over the last couple of years and interest in the technology is growing all the time. Southbourne is now one of the first locations in the UK to have a 3D print shop on its high street. We met up with Mike Beaman at the aptly named The 3d Print House to find out more about 3D printing and what’s on offer in store. The first thing that catches your eye on entering the shop are the 3D printers themselves. As the MakerBot Replicators dart back and forth you see the object being made in 3D before your very eyes. Items in the window and the store give you a good indication of the complexity and variety of things that can be printed. With a background in design and engineering, Mike tells us about his store that opened in February, “We print all manner of objects in plastic here. We can produce very intricate parts that could not be manufactured in any other way. Whether its a toy, a replacement part for your discontinued appliance or just something that looks awesome, if it can be modelled in three dimensions we can print it.” How to Get Started In order to print an object a computer model of the item is needed. There are many ways of going about this: • Find something you like that has already been designed from websites such as www.thingiverse.com • Use a computer package and draw your own designs up. There are some good CAD packages available for free such as Google Sketchup • Ask one of The 3d Print House's skilled design engineers to draw up what you require in store
9
What’s Been Printed? Some of the items catching passers by in the window include dinosaur skulls, a scale model of Sonic The Hedgehog and a cool robot. A popular choice is custom mobile phone covers like the Super Man model shown here. Models can be printed all in one go that even include moving parts. Particularly impressive is a gimbal with many rotating rings all moving independently. Mike tells us more about the service and the professional options on offer, “Whether people are looking for prototypes, final design products for re-sale, scale models of buildings (ideal for architects) or looking for promotional items for their business; we can provide advice, design, printing and finishing services that will give you exactly what you are looking for.” The items are printed using either ABS, an oil based plastic or PLA, a corn based plastic that is biodegradable and can be recycled. Rates vary according to model complexity, overall volume and printing time is charged at £6/hour. As it’s a bespoke service, Mike will provide a quote for each job. Find Out More If you’ve never seen a 3D printer in action before and want some more information, the store is open Monday - Saturday from 10am to 6pm. Visit The 3d Print House at 189 Seabourne Road in Southbourne. Call for more information 07834 952 330 or visit the website: www.the3dprinthouse.com

Get INKED! Top Tattoo Studio in Southbourne
INKED is Bournemouth's hottest tattoo studio and based right here in Southbourne. It’s home to some of the top artists from all over the country, INKED is truly among the elite. We met up with the professional INKED tattoo artists who make the fully registered studio so special. First up is MistaMeterz, “My work is influenced by new school, realism, contemporary and graffiti. So far the work that I have enjoyed doing are portraits, script and vibrant new school pieces. Before I became a tattoo artist, I was an MC and performed at some great shows up and down the county; I got to perform on live Sky TV, to millions of viewers for cage rage 2012.” Lucas Hales specialises in black & grey work, “My passion is creating inspiring original artwork from my own personal stencils. Music is a must when I am working in the studio, favourite tunes include rap and hip hop. Following my studies at Bournemouth Art Institute, I have a wealth of experience in my dream job being a tattoo artist.” Finally there is Hans Heaton, who explained, “Being a classically trained oil painter and portrait artist gives me a great advantage when it comes to translating art on to skin. Heavily influenced by old Dutch and Italian masters, I strive for perfection in every sense. Strong clear work with good depth and smoothness are the areas I focus on most in tattooing.” The INKED artists offer free consultation and will work with you to design a custom, bespoke piece based on your ideas or on something you have seen. Rates are between £50-£60 per artist and studio time is between £250-£300 per day. Call INKED on 01202 244490 to book an appointment.

Southbourne’s Music Scene Aaron Gregory’s Local Music Guide
About Aaron Gregory We’re delighted to have Aaron Gregory on board writing our regular local music scene column. Aaron is a Bournemouth based singer songwriter who has been described by Rock Regeneration as a pillar of the local music scene. Photo by Grant David Read © 2013

The Voice © BBC
It has definitely been a lively few months in Southbourne. I didn’t feel like I could start my column without mentioning two very prominent local successes that have caused much excitement. Firstly Saturday Sun played a great concert at The Grove in Southbourne, a week before being named The Guardian’s band of the week. And secondly a regular performer at The Grove, Si Genaro, became a national hero with his exuberant performance of the chicken train on BBC’s The Voice that had Kylie Minogue and Will.i.am dancing along. There has never been a better time to check out your local gigs because you just never know what is going to be the next big thing.
Coming up in Southbourne in the next two months are some great events that will help you forget the sodden winter and bring us excitedly towards the summer. On the 29th March, The Jimmy Hillbillies are rolling into town at The Grove. Famed for their upbeat and fun live shows they are a must see if you like to get your foot tapping and your hips moving, it promises to be a fantastic evening.
The Jimmy Hillbillies

On the 5th April, the fantastic Fearne Duo are playing a set at The Grove. Fearne have released an array of critically acclaimed folk/rock albums and have elevated their selves to local hero status with some massive gigs Fearne Duo and star support slots with the likes of Athlete and Feeder. To see them at a small venue like The Grove is a rarity so make sure you do not miss out. Every Monday at The Grove, the highly successful Introducer night is continuing through March and April. This is quickly becoming one of the premier live acoustic shows in Bournemouth with its beautiful candle lit atmosphere and special guest performers. The night even boasts free entry and free food and is run by the legendary artist/producer Ant Lewis/Future Revival. Ant is currently producing Future Revivals first album and it is growing into a classic piece of work so The Grove are very lucky to have him working their mixing desk every Monday. Opposite The Grove sits one of the finest restaurant/bars in all of the UK in The Larderhouse. I could talk for ages complimenting their food but more importantly for me is they have been regularly booking acoustic and folk artists for Saturday afternoons to compliment their lovely blend of fresh coffee. I couldn’t think of anywhere better to spend a Saturday afternoon than in their beautiful surroundings. Get Aaron’s Free Album Finally I have made my album free as a gift to all those who have taken interest in my page over the last year. The feedback has been fantastic and I wanted to give something back in return. You can download it for free from www.aarongregorymusic.bandcamp.com Thanks very much for your support, have a wonderful start to your spring.

How to help children want to learn with Edward and Connie
I read an interesting article the other week with the title ‘How to make children want to learn’ by Christina Yu. Though I agreed with the principles of the article, the title didn’t sit well with me. It was the word “make”. It has too many negative connotations and is pretty near impossible to “make” a child want to learn. As Ms Yu pointed out in her article, one of the problems with our current education system is how we place children in sets or tracks at an early age. Any of us, the youngest child, the adolescent or the adult can attest to the emotions these public groupings have on our self-worth. We see it in our learning centre on a daily basis. It leaves a child with a loss of confidence, which, by the way, is the number one reason parents enrol their children for after school tutoring in our centre. Students who are told they are bright will develop positive feelings about academic challenges and place themselves in situations requiring more work. Students who have been labelled as untalented ask fewer questions and, over time, do less work. This creates gaps in knowledge, which widen over the years of education. Adaptive learning is a term that has been thrown around for years in education circles, especially with those involved in “Ed-Tech”. It involves evaluating what a student knows in real time and adapting to each child’s learning needs. A combination of targeted activities and practise keeps a focus on an individual’s learning needs and encourages flexibility and self-motivation. It promotes a feeling that “intelligence” can be changed with work and perseverance. We cannot “make” our children want to learn, but we can help them want to learn, perhaps starting with their self-perceptions.
