New Food Waste Bin CollectionsSecret - Q&A Postbox

From March 2014, Bournemouth Council is operating a new food waste collection. To answer all your questions they are arranging a Q&A with ‘Waste Awareness Officers’ at: • Southbourne Library on 16th January (10-11am) • Tuckton Library on 27th February (2 - 5pm) They can answer all your questions and queries about the service as well as any other waste and recycling related queries you may have. Food waste collections will be for all houses with the standard Big Bin, Little Bin arrangement. Flats with larger shared use bins are being asked to opt in Beach Huts to receive food waste collections. The new service willTraditional allow residents to recycle all cooked and uncooked food waste which, once collected, will be composted locally into a nutrient rich soil improver and the gases produced from the process will be used to generate electricity.

The Reptiles to play The Grove Tavern Fancy some good old school rock and blues? Get down to the Grove on Saturday 15th February and enjoy some decent live music with The Reptiles.

Uncertain Future for Southbourne Creative Hub Southbourne’s Creative Hub is undergoing some changes and not, at time of going to press, currently open for groups or classes. However David Wilson from Bournemouth Beaches Ltd, who are the property’s landlords, has said, “It is our intention to continue to operate the venue in a similar manner as a community operation. We will look to gather the continued support from its users to keep the venue open and usable for the future. Therefore we would invite anyone who has previously used The Hub for classes to contact us with a view to discussing the continuation of your activities at the venue.” David can be contacted on 01202 296400 or email david@just-dorset.com

2013/2014 Weather Damage Summer is a coming in...

Local area hit by winter storms

Southbourne-on-Sea Magazine

Even as we went to print Dorset is suffering further battering winter storms. Large trees have been brought down, flooding at Iford is the worst in living memory and made the national news and a cliff collapse destroyed beach huts. Thanks to Elizabeth Challis for sending in these photos of the landslip that happened near Fisherman’s Walk in December.

Our video of extreme weather at Boscombe Pier was used in a Guardian report on the storms. Have you got photos of the storms? Email them to info@southbourne.net and we’ll publish them on our website.

Tanya explained, “We also offer a revolutionary fitness and weight

loss program that produces guaranteed results – or your money back! We are currently open Monday – Saturday and as of 15th January we are extending our opening hours to include Sunday opening.”

Tanya’s Top Ten Tips for a Healthy 2014 1. Set yourself a goal! Be specific about what you want to achieve and by when. 2. Hydrate! Drink 6-8 glasses of water a day. 3. Hengistbury Head Visitor Centre Review Was it over ÂŁ1million well spent?

The new Hengistbury Head Visitor Centre opened for previews in December and we went along to see how things were progressing. A new building has been built on to the existing thatched barn and has a grass roof and walls insulated with straw. To add to its eco-credentials there is also a solar panel array that the council claim will save about £1,000 a year on electricity. There are exhibitions on archaeology, ecology and geology presenting 12,000 years of Bournemouth’s prehistory from the Stone Age to the present. This is achieved through all manor of interactive displays - all ages will enjoy pressing buttons, pulling levers, playing with microscopes and interacting with the material on display. Visitors also have the opportunity to handle some of the archaeological finds unearthed at Hengistbury Head over the past 100 years. Use of the latest technology means you can keep up to date on Facebook with webcams located on heron and little egret nests, the lagoon and

11

marshes, bird boxes, bird feeders and in a small mammal burrow. Some of the displays weren’t quite finished on our visit but the friendly volunteers assured us these would be ready for the main opening in February. The centre has a landscaped garden with pond and lovely carved benches. Rather sparse in Winter, this area looks very promising and a spring-time visit is required to see it planted up and grown properly. In this area you will be able to experience habitats including woodland, wildflower meadow, pond life plus a weather station and a sensory garden. Working with Latimer House of Christchurch the centre has a well stocked shop with some lovely items including local art and gifts. The only slight disappointment was that there was no catering within the new centre. However the ever-popular Hiker Cafe is just round the corner. Funding came from £300,000 from developer contributions, £432,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund and £300,000 from landfill tax. Often we hear of large projects like this going over budget (and often with a much larger budget to start with), so what has been achieved with the funds is impressive and hopefully something the council can learn from on other projects. The centre opens for 2014 in February, call 01202 420909 for further details.

Southbourne-on-Sea Magazine

Business in Southbourne isn’t just about shops on the high street. In our area you’ll find all manor of interesting companies offering unique and specialist services. Hands-on Media is a professional video production company based in Stourvale Road in Bournemouth. They work with other BH businesses, local authorities, charities, schools & youth centres and community groups to produce eye catching films and multimedia video. We visited the Hands-On website (www.hands-onmedia.com) to check out their showreels and previous work. Southbourne’s Music Scene Aaron Gregory’s Local Music Guide

About Aaron Gregory We’re delighted to have Aaron Gregory on board writing our regular local music scene column. Aaron is a Bournemouth based singer songwriter who has been described by Rock Regeneration as a pillar of the local music scene. Photo by Grant David Read © 2013

As the New Year hangover is wearing off, attentions turn to a fun filled and prosperous 2014. And prosperous and fun filled it promises to be in regards to exciting developments on the local music scene of Bournemouth in the coming months. Kicking off the new year, on the 4th of January, the amazing Saturday Sun played at The Grove Tavern. Saturday Sun are gaining recognition world wide following their song Seagull being used in the soundtrack to American horror movie ‘House at The End of the Street’. Saturday Sun have also been touring Saturday Sun nationwide and play tranquil, beautiful music in the mould of Jeff Buckley and Nick Drake. If you missed them at The Grove, you can also check them out at The Winchester on Poole Road in Bournemouth. Also at The Grove is Nick Tatham on the 10th January. Nick is a great act who you may remember impressing on BBC show The Voice in 2012. Nick has a fantastic voice reminiscent of Jon Bon Jovi and delivers performances with power and vigor. His show promises to be an unmissable ‘I was there’ moment. Nick Tatham

The night is organised by Ant Lewis at The Grove and it has a beautiful atmosphere where punters can enjoy great acoustic artists with free food and in candlelight. Elsewhere in Southbourne, the Spyglass and Kettle are still offering free live entertainment on Friday and Saturday nights. This ever popular evening is great for people who just want to get up and dance to their favourite classics played live. The Spyglass has a friendly atmosphere and sea views, the perfect place to spend your cold Friday evenings. Do WeSaturday Really Need Dental Check-ups New! & Evening Appointments every 6 months? at Shelley Manor Dental

We all have a tendency to be reactive when it comes to problems. We don’t see a problem until it has occurred and more often than not the solution is more complicated after the “horse has bolted” than a timely preventative measure would have been. Routine dental check-ups may seem pointless as there is, on most occasions, nothing to report and it's all over in 10 minutes. At Shelley Manor Dental the check up fee is £30 (with x-rays taken every 2 years @ £20). If you have a one-off dental check-up and nothing is found, it may seem a waste of time? However if you take a longer term view of regular check-ups, for example over a 4 year period the dentist may pick up a carious lesion (i.e. an early cavity) that could be treated with a small filling. Most early lesions do not cause symptoms. For example, let’s say a lower first molar (the first adult molar to come through when you are 6-7 years old and therefore the tooth most commonly needing a filling) develops a small lesion. If not picked up in a timely fashion that early cavity may progress quickly to involve the tooth nerve and this often results in root canal treatment (£350). Most root canal filled teeth are weak, in which case it would also need to be crowned (£400). In cost terms compare the preventative approach against the reactive one. Preventative approach (over 4 years) 8 check-ups (£240) 2 sets of x-rays (£40) small white filling (£85) Total = £365

Reactive Approach Emergency Appointment (£50) Root Canal Treatment (£350) Basic Crown (£400) Total = £800

This example illustrates that ‘reactive’ treatment (i.e. seeing a dentist when you are in pain) is far costlier than a preventative approach. In fact you would be paying more than double, and despite your dentist's best efforts the root-filled tooth with an artificial shell (i.e. crown) on top will not last as long than if it had a small white filling. That’s not counting the pain experienced with a tooth needing a root filling and possibly lost days at work for emergency appointments. So next time you are looking at your dentist's ceiling having a check-up and wondering is it all worth it, just remember to take a long term view! Shelley Manor Dental is open Monday to Saturday.
