8000 Volunteer Hours Help Create a 'Wonderful Place' Secret Postbox In 2014, volunteers at the Hengistbury Head Visitor Centre committed over

8,000 hours to creating the most wonderful place. Internationally recognised for its wildlife and archaeology, the opening of the centre in February 2014 realised a thirty year aspiration to provide a high quality visitor interpretation centre at the site. From gardeners to conservationists, retailers to guides, local volunteers aged sixteen to eighty years old have joined forces to protect and increase understanding of the popular local beauty spot and site of special scientific interest. Richard Hesketh, Volunteer Manager, said, “We have a core team of about 60 volunteers, who pledge their time on a regular basis to support the work at Hengistbury Head. It is a pleasure toTraditional work withBeach such aHuts friendly, supportive group of people, who genuinely seem to enjoy their volunteering.” The team are looking to grow as the site develops. The volunteer programme is a great way to meet new people, gain work experience and confidence, join the guided walks for free, or go along to social events and make friends. For further details about volunteering contact Richard Hesketh on 01202 451673 or email richard.hesketh@bournemouth.gov.uk

Surviving the Winter Cold Last winter 379 vulnerable people died from cold weather related deaths in Dorset. As the winter weather kicks in, how to heat your home becomes one of the financial worries vulnerable, especially elderly residents, face. Dorset Community Foundation is running a campaign which offers grants to local people unable to afford to heat their homes. The Surviving Winter Appeal aims to raise awareness of the combined effects of fuel poverty and social isolation, and how this puts many self-reliant older people at risk, particularly if they turn down their heating to save money. Call 01202 292255 to speak to the Dorset Community Foundation. If you are in a position to help others, donate £5 by texting WARM15 £5 to 70070.

Mervyn Stutter at The Shelley Theatre Enjoy comedy straight from the heart this February

Satirical songwriter, comedian, actor and scriptwriter Mervyn Stutter has been making people laugh in comedy clubs and on radio and TV for 40 years. He was a founder member of The Flying Pickets and in 2015 celebrates his 29th year at the Edinburgh Fringe where his daily showcase of talent, Mervyn Stutter’s Pick Of The Fringe, is now the longest running show in the history of the festival. Ever since he first performed in local folk clubs as a teenager, Bournemouth local Merv has always enjoyed putting a guitar around his neck and putting on a show. He now regularly tours each year with his solo comedy and song show and audiences love him. He is irreverent, funny, affectionate, clever but clean. He chats a bit, tells a few jokes, makes some pithy observations, with lots of clever comedy songs on guitar in a joyous 90 minute show of life affirming fun. He is an accomplished singer and guitarist and his shows are often hilarious and yet thought-provoking. It is not empty, throw-away humour but lasts long after the moment has passed. "Awesome stage charisma - he is brilliant” says The Guardian.

MERVYN STUTTER ‘40 years and still in the pink!’

“Celebrating the trivial and attacking the absurd, he gives us a seriously funny show.” THE SCOTSMAN “The comedy voice of the Baby Boom Generation.” DAILY TELEGRAPH

Remembering 2014 and looking forward to 20 So many great gigs!

Aaron Gregory is a Bournemouth based singer and songwriter who has been described by Rock Regeneration as a pillar of the local music scene. Each edition Aaron brings us his round up of the best live music on offer locally. Photo by Grant David Read © 2013

Here we are, the year 2015! If it lives up to 2014 then we are certainly in for a treat in Bournemouth for music and the arts. 2014 saw Bournemouth’s set of highly rated acts begin to grow. The likes of Powdered Cows, Saturday Sun, Drew Allen, Jack Grace and Annie Winter have all released fantastic albums and have received an abundance of critical acclaim in the process. 2014 was also the year local boy Si Genero became a national sensation on the BBC show The Voice. He did this with his memorable rendition of the song ‘Chicken Train’ causing Kylie Minogue and Tom Jones to dance like chickens. Also bubbling away under the surface of the mainstream and playing storming sets at this summers festivals were Xander Allen and The Keys, Beth Johnstone, The Vacant Stares, The Jimmy Hillbillies and Beartown Zodiac. There probably hasn’t been such a talented and more diverse set of acts in the history of Bournemouth music. It really is only a matter of time before the national music press catches up. This is why you should definitely do all you can to see these acts before they break it big. Local venues like The Anvil, Smoking Aces, The Cellar Bar, The Winchester and Mr Kyps are the best places to catch all of these acts. So where do I tip you to go over the next two months? Well a definite must is a live gig at The Cellar Bar on the 20th February. This is for the album release of Beartown Zodiac who I’ve mentioned previously. I truly believe that with the release of their forthcoming album it will send this band skywards. They craft perfectly formed pop songs in the mould Beartown Zodiac

015’s local music scene of Blur and Grandaddy but add a little bit of scuzz to their harmonies to roughen up the edges. The Anvil in Lansdowne has some unmissable highlights over the next 2 months, namely Empire on the 13th Empire February and Ohhms on the 1st March. I will have my dancing shoes on for both gigs but a show I ecstatically looking forward too will be the visit of Black Honey to Sixty Million Postcards on February 19th. They make a terrific sound that fits right in with the current Australian scene that has Ohhms brought us Flyying Colours and Tame Impala. They most remind me though of The History of Apple Pie. Anyone who is free on that evening I am sure you wont be disappointed to spend it watching a quality up coming act. If you want a bigger arena style show then on the 10th February at The BIC, The Kaiser Chiefs are in town. The Kaiser Chiefs were the kings of mid noughties indie pop and wrote the hits “Oh My God”, “I Predict a Riot” and “Ruby”. They are definitely worth a watch as they are The Kaiser Chiefs now seasoned showmen and they are brilliant in holding fun shows for their audience. On Saturday 21st February at 7.30pm you have the chance to see Pete Christie, the acoustic fingerstyle guitarist who plays from the heart and sings from the soul. Pete will be performing at the intimate venue The Beehive Studio at 129 Belle Vue Road in Southbourne. It’s just £7 on the door and you can bring your own drink. Thanks for reading my column, as you can probably tell I am very excited about what 2015 has to offer. Happy New Year to all and Up The Cherries! Is this the year when Bournemouth’s music scene and football club enter the big league?

Local jogging route Get fit and enjoy the local scenery

Southbourne is the ideal location to start your local tour, be it jogging or at a more relaxed walking pace. Below is a great route that takes in the beach, Fisherman’s Walk and shops. Remember your run should start with a warm-up and end with a cool down. A good warm-up dilates your blood vessels, ensuring that your muscles are well supplied with oxygen. By slowly raising your heart rate, the warm-up also helps stress on your heart. After your run, a cool down keeps the blood flowing throughout the body. Stopping suddenly can cause light-headedness as your heart rate and blood pressure drop rapidly. Winding down slowly allows them to fall gradually.

Eat raw: Nutrients in fruit and vegetables can be diminished during food preparation and by heat, so if possible eat raw. When cooking vegetables, try steaming, microwaving or poaching rather than boiling. Eat a rainbow: Different coloured fruits and vegetables contain their own combination of vitamins and minerals, so try to eat one portion from each colour group.
