Fishermans Walk Christmas Fair Friends of Fishermans Walk are holding a Christmas Market on Sunday 12th December from 10am to 4pm by Fishermans Walk Bandstand. The Salvation Army Band will be providing festive music and there will be numerous stalls and lots of other Christmassy activities. This free event is fun for all the family! Olympic Ice Rink Plans Approved A proposal to build a new Olympic-sized ice rink in Kings Parks has been backed by local planning chiefs. Council officials approved an application for the development, which would also include indoor leisure facilities such as a climbing wall and surfing wave. The plans for the centre were described as "hugely exciting" by council leader Peter Charon. "In this current climate it would simply be too good to miss," he added. People have not had access to an ice rink since the town's Westover Road facility closed down in 1991. "Bournemouth desperately needs an ice rink; I think it's the best site in town," said councillor Bob Chapman. Top of The Shops The 5th Bournemouth Tourism awards will take place on Thursday 25th November at the BIC. There are now two categories of awards, sponsored by the Bournemouth Chamber of Trade & Commerce (BCTC), Favourite Independent and Favourite High Street store. Local business ‘Sugar Mango’ is up for nomination as Favourite Independent. Results from the awards will be published on our website after the award ceremony.

Tony Harrington MBE Remembering Charles Rolls

In July of this year, a four day commemorative event was organised for Charles Stewart Rolls (co-founder of the Rolls Royce Company) at St Peter’s School Southboume, the site of the original Southboume Aerodrome in July 2010. Tony Harrington, the co-ordinator of the event told us more, “As part of the Bournemouth Bicentenary a team of enthusiasts aided by St Peter’s School, Rolls Royce, Bournemouth Council and Churches in Southbourne put on a range of events. This included a Spitfire display at Hengistbury Head and fly over at St Peters. Further events included a concert by the Royal Air Force Central Band, a Dinner Dance, a parade of selected Roll-Royce s cars, an Ecumenical Charles Stewart Roll service, together with a wreath laying ceremony to commemorate Charles Rolls death.”

FACT FILE

Born: 27 August 1877 Berkeley Square, London ed 32) Died: 12 July 1910 (ag th mou rne Bou

The events coincided with the historical link to aviation in Southbourne as the first International Aviation meeting was held here in July 1910.

11 Tony explained, “Regrettably Charles Rolls, as one of the competitors, was killed on the second day of the competition on July 12th 1910. The tail of his Wright Flyer broke off during a flying display. He was the first Englishman to be killed in a powered aircraft accident.”

The new plaque, located at St Peters School was kindly refurbished by Roll-Royce PLC, “The unveiling of the newly refurbished plaque was of great significance to the team and everyone involved as you can see from the pictures, it was in need of some care and attention.” Tony and the hard working team of enthusiasts are currently applying to form a Rolls Royce Memorial Charity to further the work of maintaining the memorial and archiving local historic documents regarding the event. If you own or know of any historic documents relating to the period please contact Tony Harrington. Tel: 01202 428819 or email: anthonv@harrington27a.plus.com

Have a Safe Christmas

Safety Tips from PCSO Annette Long

Stay safe this Christmas by following a few simple steps from the Southbourne Safer Neighbourhood Team. In the home • Don’t leave presents or other valuables in view of ground-floor windows or external doors • Always lock external doors and windows when you leave the house for any length of time and at night • Remove keys from windows and doors and keep them out of sight; • Mark valuable items with your postcode using an ultra-violet pen and register serial numbers at www.immobilise.com. This will increase the chances of property being returned to you if it is lost or stolen and recovered by Dorset Police • Join a Home Watch or Neighbourhood Watch group in your area to receive regular crime updates and crime prevention advice. When Christmas shopping • Avoid carrying valuables and large amounts of cash with you • Spread your possessions about & never carry pin numbers with cards • Be aware of what is happening around you at all times • Keep your handbag close to you with the clasp facing inwards. Travelling to and from Christmas parties • Plan your route before leaving and stick to it • Always try to walk with a friend or group of friends • Stick to busy well-lit streets whenever possible. Avoid danger spots like quiet or badly-lit alleyways, subways or isolated car parks • Walk facing oncoming traffic wherever possible • Stay alert – if you are wearing headphones or chatting on a mobile phone you will not hear trouble approaching. For more information call the Southbourne Safer Neighbourhood Team on 07825 522687 or 01202 222222 (non-emergency calls only - dial 999 in an emergency) or visit: www.dorset.police.uk
