SEARCHING FOR EASTER EGGS WHEATLEY — Fourteen-month-old Damien Beaupre was out searching for Easter eggs in the Branch 324 Legion Ladies Auxiliary Socially Distanced Easter Egg Hunt, and may have just found where the Easter Bunny resides on his days off. This homage to the Winnie the Pooh series, was one of 14 places in Wheatley where the bunny and egg sign appeared. Area kids were encouraged to find as many as they could and report back to the Legion ladies, who entered all of the kids into a draw for nine exciting Easter baskets. 9 ERIE ST. N. LEAMINGTON 519-326-2222 OPEN SUNDAYS

ONTARIO — It was no April Fools joke, as Ontario Premier Doug Ford imposed a province-wide emergency brake on April 1. The emergency brake took effect Saturday morning, April 3. It will be in place for at least four weeks. “We are facing a serious situation and drastic measures are required to contain the rapid spread of the virus, especially the new variants of concern,” said Ford. “I know pulling the emergency brake will be difficult on many people across the province, but we must try and prevent more people from getting infected and overwhelming our hospitals.”

Ontario’s latest modelling was showing that additional measures needed to be taken, according to Ford, who said that ICU admissions were at an all-time high and past the peak of the December-January second wave. The increased numbers are being driven by COVID-19 variants, which appear to be taking off and spreading like wildfire across the province. The Windsor-Essex and Chatham-Kent Health Units, both in Red Level prior to the emergency break, have experienced an increase in cases over the past week and continue to deal with variants of concern popping up in certain areas of the region.

The new restrictions closed indoor and patio dining for restaurants, who are now only allowed takeout and delivery options. Essential grocery stores and pharmacies are limited to 50 per cent capacity, while all other retail is limited to 25 per cent capacity. Gyms and salons must close for the four week period, as well as day camps. Weddings, funerals and religious services will be limited to 15 per cent capacity per room indoors and to the number of individuals who can safely maintain physical distance outdoors. When it comes to our own homes, the Premier urged fami-

OPP warns boaters of water safety REGIONAL - With the start of the 2021 marine season now underway, the Ontario Provincial Police Essex County marine unit wants to ensure the safety of those traversing area waterways. The 2021 focus will again be that of smaller pleasure craft type vessels, specifically to the proper preparation and inclusion of safety equipment aboard these vessels occupying waters within close proximity to shore. Small vessels include, but are not limited to paddleboards, water-cycles, sealed hull and sit-on-top kayaks, as well as canoes, kayaks, rowboats, row-

ing shells, sailboards and kiteboards. The use of properly functioning fitted and approved lifejackets and Personal Floatation Devices (PFD’s) is critical and will be monitored by the OPP marine unit during the 2021 boating season. New owners plan to rebuild

Loss of iconic landmark prompts memories, sadness

Leamington firefighters battle the blaze on Point Pelee Drive on Thursday, April 1. The former restaurant was destroyed. Photo courtesy of Leamington Fire

By Mark Ribble LEAMINGTON — This area lost one of its most recognizable landmarks last week in an April 1 morning fire that destroyed the former Paula’s Fish Place Restaurant. Fire crews got the call shortly after 6 am on Thursday and found the building fully engulfed in flames when they arrived. Crews were on site all morning and when the smoke settled, all that was left was a shell of the building. The former restaurant was not inhabited and had not been open for several months. The property was sold a few weeks ago. Former owner, Paula Ouellette, says she is devastated by the loss of what she called her home for 28 years. “It was really like my home,” she said. “It always felt like customers were guests in our home.” Over the years, it had become a favourite stop for birders, tourists and many locals who made Paula’s their favourite coffee spot in the morning. “Most of my key management people had been with me for the last 22 years,” said Ouellette. “We employed family members, parents, sisters and nieces.” “It comes as an utter shock,” she added. “People have called and messaged me to share their amazing memories.” Ouellette said that although she no longer owns the property, it was like losing a beloved member of her family. “I have so many great memories, and I’m sad to see it go,” she said. The new owners, Jeanna and Jimmy Simoni, were having some reno-

vations done to turn the building into their dream Airbnb operation. They were equally

shocked at what transpired on April 1. “We were so close to opening,” said Jeanna.

Wheatley Socially Distanced Easter Egg hunt a success WHEATLEY — The Wheatley Branch 324 Legion Ladies Auxiliary Socially Distanced Easter Egg Hunt was very popular among the younger crowd with 93 local youngsters participating in this year’s event. Last year, in total lockdown, participants had to observe just from their vehicles, but this year, many were able to get out over the past few days and find the ‘virtual eggs’ indicated by a bunny and egg sign. From the 93 kids who joined, nine Eas-

ter baskets were given away and a special Easter basket was given to Hayden and Austin Berg, who were among a few to find the special golden egg as well. Other winners included Micah and Seth Beaupre, Ryan and Bryce Bailey, Dylan and Tyrel Quiring, Remy and Rogue Wolf, Kadie and Kennedy Gabriele, Aubrey Allard, Maura and Payton Pinch, Ruby and Hattie Whittle, and Adelyn and Alivia Hatt. Jami-Lee Church and Charlee Cabral lead the charge for the Ladies Auxiliary.

Speed boat rides were available from the Cedar Beach Drug Store for 50 cents a ride for summer visitors renting a cabin or for cottagers not owning a boat. Let’s pay homage to springtime in the Sun Parlor How do they know when it’s springtime in Alaska? That’s a question for the ages, I guess. We deal with the hazy shade of winter for months and then suddenly, here comes the sun. We’ve now passed that late winter, early spring transition period and we appear to be walking on sunshine. We can be content to soak up the sun or say hello, Mr. blue sky. Either way, it’s a good day. Sunshine is a sure sign that spring is here. Whether I’ve got sunshine on my shoulders or possess a pocket full of sunshine, the warmth of the sun is always refreshing. There’s nothing better than a beautiful morning to get you feelin’ groovy. The sure signs of spring are the birds. We go from the sound of silence all winter, to the tweet tweet of a rockin’ robin as the snow melts away. If you take the time to put your records on, you can listen to your favourite songs and follow it up with just sitting and watching butterflies or listening to rythm of the rain. But when the sun is out, the songbirds will sing. The blackbird sings in

RIB’S RAMBLINGS Mark Ribble

the dead of night, or so they say, but they also say a caged bird never sings. I guess only a free bird would sing then. When doves cry, you can hear the loneliness in their tone. Although I’ve never heard a hummingbird, they are certainly a pleasure to watch. It’s always a good thing when you have a bird that is colourful and your bird can sing. While they have more of a squawk, no other bird can fly like an eagle. Spring is just one of those great seasons. In the sun, we can see life, warmth and hope. If for only a moment in time, we can make the world go away. If you’re a regular reader, by now, you’ve probably already guessed what I’m doing with this week’s column. I’ve hidden 31 popular song titles in this article. See if you can find them.

Lake Erie Guardians looking for team members REGIONAL — The Lake Erie Guardians – a joint citizen science initiative between the Canadian Freshwater Alliance and Water Rangers – will be helping residents protect and preserve the watershed with a range of environmental projects this summer. There are 40 spots available on the Lake Erie Guardians team, each ready to be filled by an individual, family, household, or group, as long as they are able to access Lake Erie or one of the streams or rivers that are part of its watershed, such as the St. Clair, Detroit, Thames or Grand River. Those who are selected to participate in the program will take part in a range of citizen science activities, starting with monthly water monitoring. Participants will run water quality tests and upload their findings to an open data platform. This allows scientists – both amateur and professional – to spot changes in water quality while also contributing to a larger dataset that will be shared with other water-conservation organizations. “Consistent measuring will give us a baseline,” said Emelia Duguay, Sustainable Development Coordinator at Water Rangers. “Then, over time, if our measurements deviate from this baseline, we know that we ought to take a closer look at what’s going on. The Guardians will also undertake additional activities over the seven-month program, such as shoreline naturalization, tree planting, cleanups, removing invasive species, and helping with educational efforts in the community. “The two million Ontarians that live in the Lake Erie watershed rely on its waters for their livelihoods and quality of life on a daily basis,” explained Raj Gill, Great Lakes Program Director at the Canadian Freshwater Alliance. “We want to do our part to help make sure the lake’s ecosystem is protected for all – humans and animals alike – now, and for future generations.” No experience is needed to become a Guardian, as training will be provided to all participants. Those interested in applying to be a Lake Erie Guardian are invited to learn more at https://www.freshwateralliance.ca/lakeerieguardians.

RALLY AT FAMILY KITCHEN LEAMINGTON — What started as a local restaurateur’s wish to open her doors for indoor dining, turned into a rally for those feeling oppressed by the Ontario government’s recent shutdown meaures. About 200 people gathered in front of Family Kitchen Restaurant and the Leamington CIBC on Tuesday morning. News of the Family Kitchen staying open for indoor dining broke on social media on Easter Monday and the rally gained momentum overnight into Tuesday. Many travelled from outside of Leamington to attend and show their solidarity against health guidelines. Sun photo

YOUTH ATTEND SHRINE LEAMINGTON — Gore Hill Public School students received a surprise visit from the Easter Bunny and his wife (a.k.a. Educational Assistant Sylvia Ward and Custodian Matt Gould). The pair waved a few friendly hellos and toured the hallways. The Easter Bunny and friend toured the hallways of Gore Hill in the top photo. In the bottom photo, Early Years student, Zaya Tanada welcomes the bunnies to her classroom. Photos submitted

LEAMINGTON — Several local youth attended the Our Lady of Lebanon Shrine on Highway 77 prior to the Easter holiday in order to utilize the outdoor Station of the Cross trail. The grounds are accessible to everyone, regardless of denomination. The St. Anthony’s Parish is planning a new church in addition to a Maronite nursing home in the future. They recently welcomed a new priest, hailing from Calgary. His name is Father Michael Kassas, with 13 years of experience as a chaplain for the hospital and senior home there. Father Kassas is also bi-ritual, which means that he can celebrate mass at any Latin Roman Catholic Church and any Maronite Roman Catholic Church. Photo submitted

Local soccer groups hopeful for the 2021 soccer season

By Mark Ribble REGIONAL — With the weather warming and grass growing greener, it would normally be time for local minor soccer groups to be ready to hit the fields. Last year, the soccer seasons didn’t get off the ground and local minor soccer groups scrambled to get refunds or fee deferments to their members. This year, there was renewed hope — until this week’s emergency brake shutdown — and there is still some hope that the kids will get to play. Leamington Minor Soccer spokesman, Bob Rumble, told the Sun last week, that they are in a holding pattern. “We’re not doing a registration until we know for sure,” he said. “We will make a decision by April 12.” Rumble says that if they do go ahead, the season will be pushed back to July-August instead of the usual May start. In Wheatley, minor board member Jesse Wright says they have already held a registration but are in a holding pattern, too. “We’re hoping we can have a slightly delayed season,” said Wright. “But we need to be in the orange level to make that happen.” Both Wright and Rumble say they’ve been told that they aren’t allowed more than 25 people at the entire soccer complex at once, under the red level. “We will follow what Ontario soccer recommends,” says Wright. If the shutdown reduces numbers to get Windsor Essex and Chatham-Kent to the Orange level, the local groups may attempt a soccer season with all the proper precautions in place. “We just want the kids to get outside and play,” says Wright. “Let’s hope we can do that.” Over in Kingsville, the group there has had ongoing registration for a couple of weeks. The Sun reached out to Kingsville Soccer through their Facebook page but they hadn’t yet responded at press time. Their Facebook page says they are still hoping to have a soccer season, pending government restrictions. There’s one thing that resonates with all three organizations. No matter what group you’re affiliated with, the hope is that soccer can be played sometime this summer and the kids can have some fun.

WHEATLEY — Wheatley Minor Soccer board member, Jesse Wright, poses with his two boys, Evan (in blue) and Theo (in yellow) at the Wheatley soccer field on the weekend. Wright is hoping that, once the emergency brake shutdown is lifted, they can get kids out on the field to play the game. Wheatley and Kingsville Soccer both recently had registration for the upcoming season, with hopes that they can eventually get the season underway. Leamington Minor Soccer will make a decision in the coming days about their 2021 season. Sun photo

Flyers won 2013-14 Western conference title By C. Scott Holland On April 3, 2014, the Leamington Flyers celebrated their first ever Western Conference playoff championship. It had taken them two decades to accomplish the feat and the victory abolished many years of the pain and agony of falling short. The road to that title began with the regular season, where the Flyers finished first overall. Pitted against the eighthplace St. Marys Lincolns, the Flyers won the bestof-seven series 4-0 and earned three shutouts in four contests, winning 7-0, 5-0 ad 4-0. In the only game the Lincolns were in, the Flyers won 3-2 in overtime. Kyle Quick ripped the game-winning

goal at 6:04 of the extra period. Up next was the fifthplace London Nationals — a club which had already been a top contender for a few seasons — and would ultimately become a nemesis for Leamington in the future. The Flyers took the opener 5-3, then lost 3-2 at London. A thrilling 3-2 double-overtime victory at home featured the heroics of Eric Henderson, who slotted the game-winner at the 11-minute mark of the second overtime. Leamington outshot the Nats 68-31 as Flyers’ goalie Austin Roudebush outlasted his Nats’ counterpart, Jacob Riley. The next contest also went into double OT. This time, Leamington

emerged the winner again as David Dalby cashed in a powerplay tally at 5:08 while London’s Ryan Wells served a minor penalty for roughing. The only scoring in the game occurred in the second when the Nats’ Jeff Bauer and Leamington’s Tony Spidalieri traded goals. The Flyers closed out the series with a 6-1 win and went on to face the thirdplace Chatham Maroons for the championship, which they won in five games. Members of the 2013-14 Flyers team were: Head coach Tony Piroski, a/ coaches: Ron Soucie, Lee Jones, Jamie McDermott, Branden Robitaille, Mark Epplett, trainers: Dr. Steve O’Neil and Dr. Luke Szczepanik; GM:

Mike Daler, A/GM. Kevin Hopper. Players: Austyn Roudebush, Trevor Wheaton, J. P. Grineau, Ryan Muzzin, Blaine Bechard, Cole Chevalier,

David Dalby, Alex Seguin, Dylan Seguin, Alex Friesen, Eric Henderson, Colin Moore, Nathan Opblinger, Mitch Amante, Cale Allen, Chris Scott,

Kyle Quick, Tony Spidalieri, Daniel Robertson, Graham Kelsey plus APs Anthony Salinitri and Brett Markham.

Sports flashbacks from 1991

Lions win soccer opener The Leamington Lions senior boys defeated Amherst in their opening game of the 1991 soccer season last week at Amherst. Rich Schroeder, Scott Butler and John Day scored for Leamington, with Karl Wachholz picking up the win in goal. Coach Peter Quick also praised the work of middle sweeper Scott McGregor. Juniors drub Amherst 5-0 Meanwhile the junior boys shutout their foes from General Amherst by a 5-0 count. Joey Youssef scored three goals to lead the Lions offence, while Rocco Flores had the other two. Mark Quenneville, Jason Ford and Larry Lane shared the shutout. Bennie Lumber goes unbeaten for title The Bennie Lumber Atom House League team won both the regular season and playoff titles, going unbeaten in local atom hockey play. Team members included Scott Rutgers, Adam Tiessen, Matthew Nikkel, Shane Ivy, Patrick Michaud, Joey Raffoul, Kerry Klym, David Braun, Jason Meuller, Eric Pelletier and Derrick Critchlow. Coaches were Jarret James and Bill Rutgers. Village Inn wins senior hockey crown The Village Inn rallied to beat Gulliver Insurance Brokers and win the Leamington Men’s Senior Hockey title on Monday night. Todd Hodgson had staked the Brokers to a 2-0 lead with two nifty goals. The V.I. got on the board midway through the second as Brian Roach made it 2-1. Roach then followed with his second to tie the game. Hodgson completed his hat trick on a nice feed from Roger Lamb to regain the lead for the Brokers. Then with two minutes left on the clock, Roach struck again to complete his own hat trick, with help from Mark Matheson and Jim Butcher. That goal

tied the game and Gary Gayer scored the winner 35 seconds later to give the Village Inn the crown. LDSS Senior girls beat Amherst 3-0 The LDSS senior girls soccer team shutout Amherst by a 3-0 score last week. Leslie Gibbons, Mary Ann Elias and Suzanne Lapos scored the Lion goals. Lisa Derbyshire earned the shutout. Eight schools compete in badminton tourney The third annual LDSS Junior/Senior Invitational Badminton Tournament was held at the Sherk Complex on Easter Monday. Eight schools and 150 players competed from this area. Joe Bethlehem and Scott Coulter teamed up for third place in junior boys doubles, while Chris Tuquero and Derick Mastromatteo finished third in senior boys doubles. Adrienne Popa and Joey Youssef took second place in senior mixed doubles. Josephine Bileti and Cindy Sleiman won the junior girls doubles title, while Mary Bethlehem and Carol Guzman won the senior title.

I am a 12 year old senior girl looking for a quiet and predictable home. Unfortunately my human passed away and I ended up the shelter, and to be honest I am not handling all these scary changes so well... I get pretty nervous and defensive when people enter my personal space, and do not like being picked up or put in/taken out of a carrier. My ideal home would be quiet and low stress, with no young children, cats or dogs. I am a pretty independent girl so prefer doing things on my terms. I am very affectionate once I have been given a chance to settle into an environment, but I like to be in control of when I receive affection (trust me, I will let you know)! I am hoping someone might be willing to give me a chance, and that will respect my personal space and boundaries while I adjust to a new home.

1917 Gray-Dort, built in Chatham An email arrived recently from Simon Genest of St. Thuribe, Quebec, with the story of a car built over one hundred years ago in Chatham, Ontario. “Hi Bill. My father was a cabinet maker. A friend offered to buy for him, a heap of scrap, which was once a GrayDort car made in 1917. “For five years, my father worked patiently on its restoration. He ordered original parts. His first outing was during the official parade of the 150th anniversary of the village of St. Albans. He was very proud. “My father passed away a few weeks ago. We found the car in a dusty garage. We took it out and cleaned it up. The engine no longer starts. We don’t know if we can make a collector happy or if one of my nephews, who is a mechanic, could continue to improve it.” The Gray family in Chatham, Ontario, was very successful in building horsedrawn carriages. When the automobile became popular, they decided that was the way to go.

The Gray family would build a car in Chatham with parts imported from Dallas Dort in Michigan. The result was the Gray-Dort, which began in 1915. For the next four years, all GrayDorts had the gas filler neck sticking out through the dashboard. This way, the driver could sit behind the wheel while buying gas from a curbside pump. But there was always the danger of fire if the driver was smoking a cigarette. In 1920, the gas tank was moved to the rear of the car. In 1925, Dallas Dort suddenly decided to get out of the car business and died soon after of a heart attack while playing

OGVG FARMER PROFILES

Erieview Acres Erieview Acres was originally opened as a cut flower farm by Rob Hansen in 1986. Rob grew cut flowers at Erieview for twenty years until in 2006. At the time, Rob had a young son and was buying organic produce for the family when his wife asked why he was buying organic produce and not just growing it on their farm. At this point in time, organic greenhouse growing was rudimentary and said to be “not yet ready for commercialization.” This served as great inspiration and proved to be little challenge for Erieview, as they had already invested plenty of time and money learning about bio-controls and the biological pest management techniques

that benefited their cut flower crops. This knowledge transferred well to organic greenhouse vegetable growing practices and shortly after the switch to growing organics, Rob’s brother Norm Hansen came on board as head of research and development – adding in house research to pest management and organic nutrition. Today, Erieview Acres is one of the premier growers of certified organic greenhouse vegetables in the Leamington area. They grow in 12.5 acres of greenhouses at two locations.
