Another year is upon us—and this one marks Southwest’s 42nd of giving Americans the Freedom to Fly. A lot has changed since we first took flight in 1971. That, of course, shouldn’t surprise anyone. What began as an upstart airline serving three Texas cities has grown to carry more Passengers in the United States than any other. Today, one out of every four domestic passengers is flying Southwest Airlines or AirTran Airways, which we acquired in May 2011. What strikes

me, however, is what hasn’t changed.

When Southwest first started service, the Original Employees exhibited a Maverick Spirit and a resolve to make air transportation affordable, convenient, and fun.

Believe it or not, that concept was completely foreign in air travel at the time. Flying was a luxury for the rich and elite. Southwest was the disruptive force that changed all that.

Southwest was built on the idea of keeping costs low, offering low fares, operating safely and efficiently,

Boarding her flight, she realized she had not only left her keys in her car, but had left the car running as well. She knew she didn’t have time to retrieve the keys and still make her flight, so our Employees offered to turn off and lock her car, and hold the keys in the baggage office until she returned. She told them where she parked and what she was driving. Sure enough, upon her return, her keys were waiting for her as promised.

As a student at Aviation High School in Queens, New York, Wayne Wright always knew what he wanted to be when he grew up—a line mechanic for an airline. And even after 17 years doing the job at Southwest Airlines, he still enjoys every minute he spends helping to keep our aircraft fit and ready to fly.

All around Southwest, Wayne is affectionately known as “Goat Head.” “In a roundabout way, I came up with my own nickname simply by using the two-way radios in Maintenance,” Wayne says. “When I said ‘Go ahead,’ my thick New York accent came out the other receiver and sounded like ‘goat head.’ My Lead Manager brought it to everyone’s attention, and it stuck. I’ve been ‘Goat Head’ ever since.”

And Wayne has stuck with Southwest Airlines all these years because he loves the Company and the People with whom he works. “One of my favorite things about Southwest is that all of the work groups in Oakland get along. We give each other the Freedom to be ourselves and to take care of our individual responsibilities, which makes for a stronger Team.”

Everyone who works with Wayne knows that he’s a hard worker who loves the challenge of troubleshooting problems. In fact, Wayne loves that no two situations in Line Maintenance are ever the same. Wayne’s knack for problem solving even makes its way into his free time, as he works on old cars as a hobby.

When he’s not fixing things, Wayne loves to travel to the East Coast to visit family in his home state of New York. He and his wife, Tara, have three kids: Wayne III, 12; Joshua, 15; and Olivia, 18. Wayne loves Southwest Airlines because he has a flexible schedule, which allows him to spend time traveling with his family, all while providing for their needs.

The way Wayne sees it, Southwest gave him the job of his dreams, and it’s his mission every day to repay that gift. But really, Wayne is a gift to Southwest Airlines. The Company Culture thrives thanks to Employees like him.

As an information security advisor for a Big Four accounting firm, he has to be able to quickly respond to his clients’ needs. Whether he must provide information about a security program or assist in securing data and information systems, Chris can be there at a moment’s notice thanks to Southwest Airlines.

One of Chris’ life mottos is “Ninety percent of success is showing up,” and he knows he can consistently rely on Southwest to get him to his clients ontime. Chris appreciates being able to take advantage of any of Southwest’s 77 cities because he works in many locations across the country. “Southwest makes it easy because of the sheer number of flights offered and the ease with which I can change flights,” he says.

Sometimes you have to take the moose by the antlers.

It’s a new year, and the tradition is to think to ourselves, Time for a new you.

As inspiration, the staff of Spirit set out to learn a new trick or two (page 52). If you’re inclined to do the same, I’d like to offer a piece of advice: Think of what you’d be really bad at, and do that. Hear me out.

I’m an expert at being bad at things.

Nine years ago, for instance, my wife, Dorothy, decided we should buy 150 acres of meadow and woodland in New Hampshire. “What will I do with 150 acres?” I asked her.

“You’ll think of something,” Dorothy said.

And so I did. I learned one of the biggest new tricks of my life: building six miles of cross-country ski trails without heavy equipment. Being the world’s most impractical person, I can make tools fall apart just by looking at them. But I learned how to use a chain saw, build bridges, and manage a wildlife

habitat. To be honest, I’m not that great at any of it; but I’m way better than when I began. When there’s plenty of room for improvement, the improvement is that much sweeter.

Remember when “well-rounded” was a compliment? Now it’s a euphemism for not being good at anything in particular.

Yet, well-rounded people seem the most balanced. They fearlessly pursue their weaknesses, knowing that what doesn’t make them die of embarrassment makes them stronger.

While they were learning their respective new tricks, the Spirit staff collectively pulled off yet another one: tweaking the regular departments of this magazine.

1 cup chopped cooked bacon 1½ cups popcorn kernels ¼ of a 7-ounce can of chipotle peppers in adobo sauce 2⅔ cups light brown sugar ¾ cup butter ½ cup light corn syrup ¼ cup honey

The social media site’s users—who total one billion, or 1/7 of the earth’s population—are giving this feature a big thumbs up. But the “Like” button wasn’t always so well-liked—or even called “Like.” In a post on the Qand-A site Quora, Facebook engineering director Andrew Bosworth explains that “like” was deemed more universal than the company’s first choice, “awesome,” even though initial employee response was lukewarm. “We [had] become attached to ‘awesome’ and, comparatively, ‘like’ seem[ed] bland,” he says. The digital sentiment as we know it today made its official debut in February 2009.

Since then, 1.3 trillion “Likes” have been recorded. A quite positive development, indeed.

Using firmer pavement could save us

Why is that? Something called pavement deflection, the buzzword of a recent study by MIT civil engineers. Translation: When you drive, your car makes a slight indentation in the road—about 1/100 of a millimeter—and, as such, is continually burning fuel to climb out of that groove.

Researcher Franz-Josef Ulm compares it to walking on sand—as your feet sink, they create a valley from which you’ll have to emerge.

According to the study,

stiffer roads, like ones paved with concrete or thicker layers of asphalt, would help reduce gas guzzling by about 3 percent, or more than $15 billion annually. “[It would] reduce the environmental footprint of our pavement systems for generations,” says Ulm, who hopes to achieve a more sustainable national infrastructure. Now that gives new meaning to street smarts.

L

ike most little boys, my athletic career began at age 5. I stood on a shaded spot in our backyard, placed a tethered t-ball atop its stand, gripped my new bat, and swung with all my might. I made contact—with the tee, not the ball.

The day my athletic career began is also the day it ended, and with it went a piece of my pride.

So, 25 years later, I’m giving sports a second chance. On the far corner of Southern Methodist University’s dew-soaked practice field, I watch a sea of football players cycle through fast-paced morning drills.

A week earlier I’d called Frank Gansz Jr., SMU’s special-teams coach, to ask a favor. To reverse decades of self-doubt, I told him, “I need to learn to kick a field goal.”

The veteran coach didn’t blink.

“We’ll teach you in 20 minutes,” he declared. “If you don’t put it through the goal post, we’ll move you in a little closer. If you still don’t make it—well, that’s what you’ll have to write about.”

When the whistle blows at 8:30, practice is over for most of the guys. But it’s just starting for this rookie. Gansz leads me inside the school’s 32,000-seat stadium. He and I have different ideas of what lesson means. I’m ready for a demonstration, a step-by-step guide.

But Gansz insists there’s not much to it: Place the ball, with its laces out, under a metal holder; take two paces back and two to the left; in one sweeping motion, wallop the thing with the top of your foot.

That’s just what I do, and I kick the stuffing out of the metal. The ball wobbles away. My foot throbs.

“Well, it’s your first time,” says Gansz. So I give it another go. Two

steps back, two to the side, whomp.

The ball takes flight this time, but I’ve hooked it far left and nowhere near my target.

“Well, you aren’t wearing cleats,” Gansz consoles.

Another kick, another dud. By now, the once confident coach has blamed my shoes, my blue jeans, and the wind. (For the record, I don’t sense even the slightest breeze.) We both know this exercise isn’t about unlocking the secrets of field-goal kicking so much as it is finding the confidence to put what I’ve learned to use. By attempt No. 6, I just want to spare Gansz the trouble of coming up with another generous excuse for my failure.

Two steps back, two to the side, kick. It’s good! My mentor cheers as years of self-doubt sail through the uprights.

Gansz gave me more than a football lesson that day. Like every good coach, he taught me to quit living life on the sidelines and to start living it on the field.

I’m expecting my first bambina in March, and the urge to learn how to sew has suddenly gained even greater significance.

Step 1: Hit Hobby Lobby, where I pick out a pattern for an adorable onesie, marked (theoretically) “easy.” Step 2: Call a dear friend who is a mother and a craft wiz, promise refreshments in return for her help, and hold my breath.

Thankfully, she agrees.

When I first dreamed of exploring my inner Martha Stewart, I had no idea how tricky it would be.

There are uncommon vocabulary words, secret tricks, odd supplies,

impossibly tiny folds, and curved seams. The notion that I would be able to figure out the pattern?

Fuhgettaboutit. I was certain I’d emerge from the night with the most beautiful onesie for my little girl, but when we were two hours in and still working on the first seam I accepted the inevitable: wandering stitches and one puckered sleeve. Asymmetry is all the rage, right? She’ll pull it off fine.

What I learned from diving into this project applies perfectly to motherhood, I think. I may have lofty expectations of what a divine little lady my baby will be, and how she’ll one day end global warming and find a natural cure for cancer.

But no matter who she is or how she shapes the fabric of her life, I will love her all the same.

I

don’t look forward to Saturdays on the couch. In fact, I fear them. Rare is the weekend (or weekday) that I don’t have a social outing arranged or a to-do list to take on.

But fueled by a curiosity about whether I could ever be content in solitude, I found myself in suburban Dallas, in the middle of a work day, at the Brahma Kumaris Raja Yoga Meditation Center, where Sister Ranjan Inamdar guides me through a one-on-one lesson in cloistered inner-tainment.

The following morning, a Saturday, I settle into the lounge chair on my back porch, close my eyes, and repeat the words I am a light, I am a peaceful soul in my head, just

as Sister Ranjan had instructed.

When they come out, they are to the tune of the Simon & Garfunkel lyric “I am a rock, I am an island.” I know this is not what she had intended, but it is a start, and it makes me smile. While my husband busily runs the errands I typically tend to, I shift my quiet focus and read 100 pages of a new novel. As the hours pass and I stick to doing next to nothing, my restlessness—usually so inescapable— begins to wear off.

By the end of the day, I have come to deeply appreciate my kingdom of quietude.

I’m still the busybody I always was. But on some mornings, when I remind myself that it’s good for me, I sit in the lotus position and repeat those words to myself: I am a light, I am a peaceful soul. More often than not, my 75-pound mutt, Scout, plops onto my lap. He’s happy for my undivided attention.

I

’d love to tell you that, at the age of 26, I have overcome the food phobias of my youth, but I have not. My adult diet is made up of two food groups: chicken and tacos. Vegetables? Blech. Pork? Meh. Despite growing up on the East Coast, I loathe seafood, with the exception of shrimp—if it’s peeled. I tried my first steak at 19; my first piece of bacon at 22. I don’t take risks.

I don’t branch out. And I’ve been fine with that.

My boyfriend and exasperated dinner companion, Thomas, is not so fine with that. In an effort to step into the role of omnivorous adult— and allow Thomas the pleasure of eating at a seafood place more than once a year—I promised to look my fears in the mouth and open wide. I was terrified.

It doesn’t take long to determine which fishy delicacy would test my will and prove the hardest to

swallow. The mere thought of a raw oyster’s slimy consistency causes me to flush and my stomach to turn. Still, I make a date for Thomas and myself at Boulevardier, a newly opened French bistro in Dallas’ Oak Cliff neighborhood that is winning acclaim for its well-appointed raw bar.

Chris Rubel, the restaurant’s chief shucker and our host for the evening, flashes a knowing smile as we pull up barstools in front of him. He is expecting us, and after brief introductions he goes to work, skillfully prying and popping each specimen to create an artful array of about a dozen half shells. Dinner is served.

Cautiously, I raise the first oyster, a Gulf varietal, to my lips and proceed to stare it down. You can do this, I tell myself. Don’t embarrass yourself. Perhaps I already have by burying that first mollusk between a saltine and a mountain of cocktail sauce. Chris offers encouragement: “Give it a couple

chews to get the texture, then let it ride on back.”

And ride on back it does. To my astonishment, I don’t gag. Then again, all I really taste is the salty cracker and the cocktail sauce.

Hello, false confidence! Feeling like a pro, I grab another and throw it back, sans accoutrements, per Chris’ suggestion. The texture is as expected—firm yet gooey— but the taste is an unwelcome surprise. Have I just ingested a mouthful of seawater and the grit of the ocean floor with it?

Only afterward am I informed of a few simple truths: 1. Oysters taste like where they come from. So that hint of high tide? Totally legit.

2. They’re alive up to the very moment that you eat them. Funny, I didn’t hear any screaming.

3. No one eats Gulf oysters straight. No one.

As we polish off the plate, I look at Thomas, and a Cheshire grin crosses his face. Half proud, half nauseated, but entirely on my way to a brave new world, I smile back—and drain my champagne.

hands-on learning, extra attention from enthusiastic young educators, and extra credit for thinking outside the No. 2 pencil grid—delivered curbside in a 19-foot 2003 Ford Utilimaster with the aerodynamics of a galloping refrigerator.

The SparkTruck “eats gas, it’s noisy, it rattles like crazy, it doesn’t have a cup holder, and the A/C is awful,” Eugene Korsunskiy, 27, shouts from behind the steering wheel as he negotiates L.A.’s stark downtown streets. “But it’s getting us around.” That’s an understatement. Four days from now, when SparkTruck wraps up its inaugural four-month road trip across America, it will have hit 73 locations in 33 states, reaching 2,697 students. What started as the thesis project of a group of eight grad students from the Institute of Design at Stanford (aka “d.School”) has grown into a movement to tap the “maker gene” in students nationwide. By inspiring more young creatives, the SparkTruckers hope to bring con-

fidence back to classrooms bogged down by curriculum requirements and testing mania.

“When kids are successful in school, that’s great, but we’re interested in seeing kids fail,” Korsunskiy says. He looks a little like Saturday Night Live’s Andy Samberg, but he’s not joking.

He points to a pile of doodles—kid-drawn inspirations for 1,001 SparkTruck projects—as evidence.

“What we’re doing is creating a prototyping mind-set. You try something, you fail at something, you keep trying. We want kids to know it’s okay to make mistakes along the way.”

The key demographic for SparkTruck is the fourth to seventh grade range, a critical population, as they see it. “Younger students are great at doing crafts—they’re naturals—but then they get mired in test anxiety and standardization,” says Jason Chua, 24, who has degrees in engineering and product marketing and a brain for all kinds of curious facts (as in, “the fully-loaded Sparkjanuary 2013 spirit

Behind the scenes, he handles the cutters, printers, laptops, and scanners. Out front, 27-year-old Duygu “Didi” Erucman chronicles the action. The Stanford MFA grad, who grew up in Turkey, hadn’t spent much time with children before but loves how they inspire her. “As long as I have my coffee first,” she laughs.

“I think the more technology we have,” says Chua, “the more we crave learning to create in real and tangible ways.”

“Okay, kids,” he says, handing out sheets of paper to a small gathering of 9- to 11-year-olds at a table outside the truck. “How can we make the world a better place?”

The children’s faces go slack, as in, “Uh-oh, are we being tested on this?”

But Korsunskiy hangs in.

“Think about it. What can you, and you, and you do to actually improve the world?”

One little boy cautiously raises his hand.

“Plant trees?” he says.

“Plant trees! Excellent! Who else?” Korsunskiy is exuberant, and it’s catchy. Suddenly, it’s an idea-palooza.

Hug a puppy!

Recycle!

At the word “recycle,” Korsunskiy takes a Sharpie to a sketchpad and draws the familiar arrow-toarrow-to-arrow triangle that represents the concept. “This is called a logo,” he says. “It happens to be a logo that makes the world a better place. Now it’s your turn to make a logo to represent your good idea.”

Again, the kids faces go slack.

Again, Korsunskiy hangs in.

master.com, the United States has dropped from first to 19th place in high school graduation rates.

From first to 17th in science literacy. First to 14th in reading. First to 25th in math. And that’s in a country that spends more on education (4.5 percent of the U.S. GDP, according to worldbank.org) than almost any other.

It is naïve to think a small band of twentysomethings in red T-shirts can fix the problem by showing kids how to make lasercut rubber stamps or tiny watchbattery robots. But it is a start.

“SparkTruck gets the ball rolling as far as making innovation happen,” says Donna Salo. She runs an after-school science consultancy called S.L.I.M.E. (Science Launches Imagination Motivation Excitement) and has the distinction of living in the smallest town SparkTruck visited: East Long Meadow, Massachusetts, population 16,000. Salo was so motivated by the idea of bringing “a cool West-Coast innovation funmobile” to town that she organized an entire community science fair around the visit. She only had a week to pull it together, but when the SparkTruck arrived at Birchland Park Middle School in October, Salo was waiting with 220 kids, 75 parents, and 16 exhibits, including a riding hovercraft, bomb-detecting robots, bridges built from pennies, and one of those Van de Graaff static electricity generators that makes your hair stand up like Albert Einstein’s.

“We used to think it was the role of the school system alone to stimulate our kids and introduce fresh ideas,” Salo says. “Today, innovation comes as much from outside as it does from within. The model is really SparkTruck itself. They got an idea, they went after it, and they carried it through to fruition.

SparkTruck began as an idea for bringing hands-on learning to schools in the San Francisco Bay Area. But a moveable classroom wasn’t the Stanford grads’ first entrepreneurial impulse.

The project tapped the spirit of the times, riding the handmade coattails of the so-called maker movement, a growing subculture of glue-gunning, robot-loving, welder-mask-wearing do-ityourselfers. These are the groovy young knitters, felters, and metalworkers who’ve turned companies like the craft commerce website Etsy into multi-million-dollar behemoths. “It’s weird, but I think the more technology we have, the more we crave creating things with our hands and learning to create in real and tangible ways,” Chua says.

He’s right about that craving.

There’s a reason 13 million people have clicked on Sir Ken Robinson’s online TED Talk about how schools are killing creativity.

Robinson has called for a radical rethink of how we teach kids.

Nurturing curiosity is essential.

As Robinson puts it in his oftquoted talk, “Creativity now is as important in education as literacy, and we should treat it with the same status.” There’s a problem, though, he says: “Many highly talented, brilliant, creative people think they’re not—because the thing they were good at in school wasn’t valued, or was actually stigmatized.”

Robinson and his argument that children “get educated out of creativity” somewhere between grade school and junior high was a big inspiration for the SparkTruckers. Likewise, they looked to education innovators like Khan Academy founder Salman Khan, whose free online library

of 10-minute math and science videos has been viewed by more than 200 million people. Other inspirations included TEDYouth and TEDEd, education-oriented offshoots of the Technology Entertainment and Design confab where the focus is on presenting “ideas worth spreading.”

A larger reform is in the works, too. The Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Education Coalition (STEM) is an alliance of more than 500 business, professional, and education organizations working to drive innovation in our modern global economy. With backing from companies like Microsoft and Time Warner Cable, it’s helping fasttrack extracurricular and afterschool programs that emphasize hands-on, inquiry-based learning.

In other words, programs exactly like SparkTruck. Says Chua, “The more opportunities you give kids to build things and figure out solutions to problems, the more opportunities they’ll have to make a real difference in the larger world.”

Does the SparkTruck method work? Stanford researcher Kathayoon Khalil thinks so. Khalil looked over SparkTruck data and concluded that the students who engaged in SparkTruck workshops are much more likely to identify themselves as “builders” than those who didn’t participate.

Khalil also predicts that one or two out of 100 students will pursue a STEM-related major in college as a direct result of their SparkTruck experience.

A SparkTruck Project

Make Your Own VibroBot The Idea Build a simple robot using a vibrating pager motor and watch battery. When taped together and glued to a popsicle stick, the “Creature Mash VibroBot” shimmies along the surface of a table.

Materials • Scissors, tape, and glue • Small pager motor (jameco.com; part No. 256306; $2.95) • Coin cell battery (jameco.com; part No. 14162; $1.25) Creature Parts Popsicle sticks, pipe cleaners, self-adhesive googly eyes, craft feathers, aluminum foil, paper clips, construction paper, and any other craft doodads, like tiny pompoms or yarn pieces.

Instructions 1. Tape the leads of the motor to the battery, and tape the assembly to a popsicle stick.

2. Add pipe cleaner arms and legs to the popsicle stick, and make a robot face with the eyes, feathers, foil, clips, or whatever is on hand.

3. Have fun adjusting, or “iterating,” the design until the VibroBot moves to your satisfaction across a clean flat surface.

As world-changing projects go, this one’s simple and fast (the whole process takes around an hour and a half) but it’s a crash course in the elements of innovation: brainstorming, teamwork, prototyping, invention, building, and sharing.

As Officer Daniel Calderon, who oversees this P.A.L. program for the Newton Street Precinct, says, “Sometimes all you need is someone to show you something new, and it changes everything.

Maybe it’s a subconscious thing, but I can tell that these kids—and most of them come from rough neighborhoods and families that are struggling—will walk away today going, ‘Wow! This stuff exists?’” Adds SparkTrucker Didi Erucman, “We’re not teaching as much as exposing kids to possibility. If you really want to make something happen, you can.”

That can-do spirit lingers and spreads. At a SparkTruck visit in Nashville, the group sent their logo-stamped letters to the mayor’s office. The mayor then replied, thanking each and every kid for working to make a difference. In East Long Meadow, Donna Salo is planning an even bigger science fair next year, and she is looking for new ways to inspire students with cool tools and innovative ideas. “In a way, SparkTruck was just the beginning for us,” she says. “It’s part of a longer term project to get students engaged and excited and to make learning come alive.”

As for SparkTruck itself, the next step is simply to keep the project rolling. The team is talking with Stanford and corporate sponsors about making SparkTruck an annual student project or even an educational franchise.

“We’ve gotten requests from peo-

ple in Germany, Sweden, Japan, and Australia who want to do what we’re doing,” Chua says.

Erucman, meanwhile, is finishing her documentary about the experience, and Korsunskiy is toying with the idea of passing the teaching reins to a new SparkTruck team so he can work with children, full time. “I hadn’t thought about teaching before, but

I’ve had a mind-set shift,” he says.

“There’s nothing more exciting than getting the message across that, through sheer willpower and imagination, you can have a big impact on the world.”

Not only does regular physical activity help improve your overall health and fitness, it also reduces your risk for many chronic diseases. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, adults 18 to 64 years should do at least two hours and 30 minutes each week of aerobic physical activity at a moderate level. If you’re going the more vigorous route, the amount decreases to an hour and 15 minutes each week.

Start slow and once you’ve got that down, make your workout a daily rou-

tine. Being active five or more hours each week can provide even more health benefits—but it doesn’t have to be all at once. Spreading aerobic activity out over at least three days a week is best, and don’t focus solely on cardio. It’s important to incorporate strengthening activities, like push-ups, sit-ups and lifting weights, at least two days a week.

While five hours a week doesn’t sound too hard in theory, the aging process, coupled with the challenges of daily life, can often serve as an obstacle to achieving fitness goals.

The relationship between the latter and one’s mental health is something Rev. On Sunday, February 3, “Family Gras” features two parades and a beachfront carnival. We partnered with Row 44, an inflight entertainment company, in spring 2010 and have been gradually installing the service on our fleet of Boeing 737-700s and -800s. A Southwest Employee for 20 years, I have spent half of my career with the airline as a Key Contact. WHAT IS IT? A wireless satellite–based network that allows you to connect to the Internet thousands of feet in the air!

WHEN CAN I USE IT? A Flight Attendant will alert you if the wireless network is available on your aircraft. As soon as the Flight Attendant says it is safe to turn on approved electronic devices, you are welcome to connect. The Flight Attendant will also announce when it is time to turn off and stow your device before landing.

The network will be unavailable at that time.

WHAT KIND OF DEVICE DO I NEED? All you need is a WiFi-enabled device (802.11a/b/g or n) with an Internet browser. Please note that cellular devices without a WiFi component will not work with this system, and their use is restricted to game or airplane mode per current regulations.

HOW DO I CONNECT? Every device is different, but here are the basic steps: 1. Once the Flight Attendant has announced that it is safe to use approved portable electronics, turn on your WiFi-enabled device and set to airplane mode (if applicable).

2. View available wireless networks, select “Southwest WiFi,” and connect.

3. Launch your Internet browser for immediate access to the Southwest Airlines Hotspot portal and all it has to offer.

4. To purchase WiFi, click “Get Connected” and enter the requested information.

5. Enjoy surfing the web at 30,000 feet!

WHAT CAN I DO ON IT? The Southwest Airlines WiFi features a free entertainment portal that houses limited content including a flight tracker, shopping, games, and all that southwest.com has to offer at no charge to you! On our network, you can do just about anything you can do at work or at home. Due to the shared environment, we prohibit the use of voice applications (VoIP) and attempt to filter inappropriate content. Please note the speed for viewing and downloading high-bandwidth content, such as high-quality streaming media or large-file downloads will vary.

IS IT SECURE? The onboard wireless connection is similar to a WiFi service at a coffee shop, library, hotel, or airport. You should exercise the same precautions you would at one of these public locations.
