I LUV this time of year—looking forward to what’s on the horizon and planning to accomplish the goals and resolutions that we set for ourselves. At Southwest Airlines and AirTran Airways, this new year promises to be both monumental and historic. Of course, we have not changed our mission, which is to excel in our airline operation and to provide the highest quality Customer Service— all with the low fares and convenient flight schedules you’ve come to expect
from us. We began that journey almost 43 years ago, determined to give America the Freedom to Fly. In 2014, we’re setting our sights on the international horizon as we look to bring that Freedom to other parts of North America. This year marks the homestretch of the integration of AirTran into Southwest. What does that mean? At this time next year, AirTran will be fully converted into our Company, and we’ll be flying as one Brand—a stronger and better
Customer Service in Action One of our Phoenix Customer Service Agents was at the gate podium recently when a young boy and his mother walked up. The boy was getting ready to travel alone for the first time, and our Agent noticed that he was visibly upset. It turns out he’d had to throw away his juice at the security checkpoint. Our Agent took him to the nearest airport store and bought him another juice and a box of Mike and Ike candy. The boy’s mother reports that when he came back to the gate he had the biggest smile on his face. Our superhero Employee had made his day!
Southwest Airlines. We’ll have one flight schedule, one set of Customer policies, and one Purpose: to connect you to the important moments in your lives with friendly, reliable, and low-cost air travel. AirTran has successfully served international markets for years, and as we inherit that footprint, Southwest will, for the very first time, plant our flag outside of the United States. We’re completing the necessary work that will enable us to do so, including the installation of a new international reservation system. A year from now, you could be reading Spirit magazine on your way to any number of warm, sunny destinations south of the border. Another milestone in 2014 will be the lifting of the federal Wright Amendment restrictions in October, which will enable us to offer nonstop domestic flights to anywhere on our route map from our home base of Dallas Love Field. We’re putting the final touches on a total renovation of the airport, essentially giving our Customers a brand new Dallas Love Field just in time for the October celebration. I hope many of you have already experienced the first phase of this fantastic renovation. We have many more big initiatives on our plate—far too many to list here. Needless to say, these are exciting times for our Company, for our Customers, and for our Employees. But above all, our perennial New Year’s resolution is to become the world’s most loved, most flown, and most profitable airline.

Star of the Month
Diana Barth
C U S TO M E R S ER V I C E S U PER V I S O R , S P O K A N E , WA S H I N GTO N
The word “star” has a wide variety of definitions. You may think of people who shine on the silver screen, sing the latest Top 40 hits, dance the cha-cha, or all three. But at Southwest Airlines, people like Diana Barth are the ones who truly shine. After more than 23 years as an Employee with the LUV airline, Diana’s Fun-LUVing Attitude, Warrior Spirit, and Servant’s Heart make her our favorite kind of triple threat. Diana began her Southwest career as a Reservations Agent in Phoenix, assisting Customers over the phone. Several years later, she shifted her star power to the ticket counter as a Customer Service Agent. Not long after that move, Southwest began service to Spokane, Washington, where Diana has been a Customer Service Supervisor since day one. The relocation was not a tough one, as Spokane is where Diana was born and raised. Living there gives her the opportunity to enjoy a variety of outdoor activities, including bike riding in the spring and snowshoeing in the winter. She also LUVs spending time with her adult children, Whitney and Dillon, and is still a member of the booster club at the high school they attended. At the airport, “no two days are ever the same,” Diana says. There are occasionally irregular operations that require an extra level of attention, but she notes that the most challenging times can also be the most rewarding. “We are put in a position where we really need to react quickly and think outside of the box. “As Southwest Employees, we are encouraged to color outside the lines,” Diana adds. “It’s not only OK to have a sense of humor, it’s absolutely encouraged.” This perspective is invaluable in her role supervising the Customer Service Agents in Spokane every day. Diana, we consider Employees like you our greatest asset. When it comes to “stars,” you’re the kind we LUV to look up to. —Adam Rucker

Rapid Rewards Freedom Story
Graham Bensinger S P O R T S J O U R N A L I S T, S T. LO U I S
STOOL PROVIDED BY WWW.CENTRO-INC.COM
+
For Emmy Award–winning sports journalist Graham Bensinger, living out of a suitcase is a way of life. As the creator and host of In Depth with Graham Bensinger, a nationally televised series, Graham travels near and far to conduct exclusive interviews with star athletes. While he calls St. Louis home, last year Graham spent more than 200 days on the road filming, meeting with network executives, and growing his business. (On a recent press tour, he traveled to 13 cities in eight days!) Enter Southwest Airlines. As a small-business owner, Graham values the many benefits that Southwest provides over other airlines. For example, Graham says he’s saved a small fortune in change fees by flying Southwest—his plans can change at the last minute if an interview gets rescheduled, which affects not only Graham but also the entire production crew traveling alongside him. Plus, shooting on location requires a lot of equipment, so the fact that Southwest offers two free checked bags per Customer plays in his team’s favor. As an A-List Preferred Member in Southwest’s Rapid Rewards Frequent Flyer program, Graham finds it easy to book reward travel at southwest.com using the bank of points that he’s accumulated. Although true vacations are few and far between due to his unpredictable work schedule, he’s enjoyed weekend getaways to cities like Chicago, New York, Phoenix, and Seattle courtesy of his Rapid Rewards Points. The fact that points don’t expire is an added bonus, and Graham enjoys sharing them with friends and family so that they can travel as well. Graham is excited that Southwest will begin flying internationally later in 2014, as destinations in Mexico and the Caribbean are on his travel to-do list. Graham, we’ll LUV seeing you next time you’re onboard one of our red-bellied jets, no matter where you’re headed. —Erin Terry

From the Editor
Dear Reader, Boy, are you lucky. You get to read a story, starting on page 72, that contains some profound wisdom if you read it right. The story has to do with a man who, for years, has been a member of the United States Running Streak Association, an organization that is not about dashing around naked but running at least a mile every single day. Words like “obsessive” and “guaranteed injury” come to mind. But the moral of the story, it seems to me, can inspire us to accomplish amazing feats. For instance, a person who writes just 300 words—more or less the length of this note—every day could complete 50 novels over the course of a career. (They might all be unreadable, but your bookshelf would inspire awe.) While obsessive-compulsive disorder is a real and sometimes debilitating disease, a single-minded daily pursuit can make for the healthiest kind of obsession. My son, George, is the obsessive type. When he was 8 years old, I reported a story about a crazy bunch of
people called “peak baggers” who try to climb the 48 highest mountains in our home state of New Hampshire. I thought these people were funny; George thought it was the coolest thing ever, and he talked the rest of us into becoming peak baggers. I spent more than half my time traveling back then, but I came home over the weekends to hike with my family. George achieved “Forty-eighter” status when he was still 10, climbing Owl’s Head in a snowstorm. He and his sister, Dorothy Jr., grew up to become avid outdoorspeople. My wife, Dorothy Sr., continued the obsession by climbing a nearby mountain more than 100 times a year, two years in a row. Obsessive? To her it was a healthy habit and a continuing joy. What’s your daily obsession, and where do you hope it leads? Write in to let me know at letters@spiritmag.com. —Jay Heinrichs Editorial Director

Your Words
Dear Spirit,
I have been a Southwest customer for a very long time and have enjoyed your in-flight magazine many times over, but I must say this is the first time I have written a response to an article. Alex Sheen’s movement [“The Every Day Action Hero,” November 2013] couldn’t have come at a better time. His simple message of commitment honors his late father as well as the integrity within each of us. Spirit could continue to help spread that message by inserting a perforated sheet of 10 Because I Said I Would cards in the next few months’ worth of issues. Imagine the impact it would have. Thanks for capturing Sheen’s quest to change lives. It has definitely changed mine. BY GABBI CHEE

After reading “The Every Day Action Hero” in your November 2013 issue, I ordered Because I Said I Would T-shirts as Christmas presents for all of my family and friends. That simple idea is so powerful. I’m still contemplating what I will put on my card. Alex Sheen, your beauty lifts off the page in your quotes and in your smile. Your father is surely proud. Thanks for having such a positive impact on people.
The article on Alex Sheen and his Because I Said I Would organization touched me deeply in a few different ways. First, I pride myself on doing what I say I will do, and it felt wonderful to have the virtue of that acknowledged. Second, I realized I need to examine my own tendency to become irritated when I encounter people who don’t do what they say they will do. This is something I hope to work on. The long-range impact that Alex Sheen’s organization has had, is having, and will certainly continue to have is extraordinary. For this, I want Alex to know that I bow to him and to his steadfast willingness to keep his

I have many family members and friends who frequently fly South-

SAID AND DONE
As the founder of Because I Said I Would, I want to express my deepest appreciation for the article you ran about us in Spirit. The response has been incredible. I can’t thank your readers enough for the generosity and kindness they have shown. With their help, we have been able to hire Amanda, previously our Chief Volunteer, as our first full-time employee. I have even received requests to share our message at events around the country. Additionally, our inbox is full of hundreds of messages from folks who have read the article. Many of these messages include stories about how the person read it while flying across the country to fulfill a promise. At this very moment, I find myself in the same place. I am typing this while aboard a Southwest flight to Sacramento, where my grandma is in intensive care. I will be there for her in her time of need. Too often we rush to buy plane tickets to see someone die, but not to see them live. It’s days like today that make you think about how you spend your life. Thank you for all you have done for Because I Said I Would. We will never forget the time we were on the cover of Spirit. —ALE X SHEEN L A K E W O O D, O H I O
Your letter means a lot to us, Alex. We’ll be thinking about your grandmother—and about how we spend our own lives. Thanks for being such a profound inspiration to us and to so many of our readers. CORRECTIONS
In an online version of “The Every Day Action Hero” [November 2013], we incorrectly stated that Matthew Cordle had been sentenced to eight and a half years in prison on October 10, 2013. Cordle was actually sentenced to six and a half years on October 23, 2013. We neglected to credit illustrator Jason Schneider for his work on page 52 of the December issue [“Helping Hands,” Wise Guide]. We regret these errors.

Dramatic Turn
HBO’s impressive string of Sunday-night dramas continues with True Detective, starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson as weathered investigators brought back together after 17 years to revisit a murder case. Set against a lush Louisiana backdrop, the eight-episode miniseries moves back and forth through time as the leads struggle to make sense of both the case and their own lives. We suspect it’ll be a hit—albeit a dark and troubling one. DATE January 12 TELEVISION True Detective

Lindsey’s Lament
STYLING BY ROBIN FINLAY
“Lindsey is a friend of mine, and her favorite drinks are what she calls ‘brown, bitter, and stirred.’ I wanted to make her something she'd like, so I started with bourbon and Becherovka, which is an herbal bitters that has a lot of baking-spice notes to it. Then I remembered reading an article that suggested adding salt to make cinnamon pop. When I did that, the drink just came alive. All I needed was something to

bridge those flavors, and I landed on maple syrup. The drink has all those sitby-a-fire-on-a-cold-night components to it. “At the restaurant, which opened last summer, we embrace Italian dishes that are familiar and authentic. I’m Sicilian, so that kind of cooking is very close to my heart. Growing up, my family shared many memories around the dinner table, and I hope to recreate that kind of interaction for our guests. My style is ‘less is more.’ I keep it simple, try to stay seasonal, and concentrate on getting high-quality ingredients and using proper techniques. This is a good example of that. I get beautiful mozzarella, bread and fry it, make a simple caponata, and serve it with a nice tomato sauce. It’s a great way to start a meal at your home, and it’s a real crowd-pleaser. Who doesn’t like fried mozzarella?” WHO David Viviano, executive chef WHERE Trecento Quindici Decano, at The St. Regis Aspen Resort WEB stregisaspen.com

Choice Words Master negotiator Ron Shapiro offers a crash course in effective communication. What about when proposing budget changes? Be clear about the funds you seek and what they’ll be used for. While communicating your request, show that you’ve done your research by noting precedents and comparable situations. Know that it’s OK to ask for a little more than you need, but stay within reason. If you’re denied, try not to take it personally. Remember, it’s the idea being rejected, not you.
Ronald M. Shapiro is the author of Perfecting Your Pitch: How to Succeed in Business and in Life by Finding Words That Work.
F2_Q+A_bh.indd 39
What can you do to prepare for a pitch? I use a simple, systematic approach that I call the three Ds: draft, devil’s advocate, and deliver. Start by writing out every point you want to make or feeling you want to express. Next, find a friend or associate who can objectively suggest revisions. Finally, practice—preferably with another person.
By doing so, you’ll not only prepare yourself for questions that might arise, but you’ll increase your comfort level, allowing you to communicate with confidence. Any tips on asking for a raise? Craft a message that outlines your accomplishments, your compensation history, and, if known, comparable salaries. You should
have a number in mind. Once you’re in your boss’s office, express appreciation for opportunities, yet be firm in discussing your contributions. Anticipate questions that might arise, and have answers ready. Speak with selfassurance, and remember that it’s what you say and how you say it that counts.
What types of language should you avoid altogether? In any scenario, keep from using words that attack or show anger. You should also steer clear of generalizations and overstatements—things like always, never, and all. And avoid unreasonable demands. Trust and credibility take time to build and can be easily lost if you fall into these communication traps. JANUARY 2014 SPIRIT

Staying Power What’s the best way to keep a New Year’s resolution? Allow yourself to keep your resolutions 80 percent of the time and fail to keep them 20 percent of the time. Many resolutions are abandoned due to the fact that “perfect is the enemy of the good.” It’s not necessarily realistic to be 100 percent compliant. So forgive yourself for the one meal that didn’t meet the diet, the day you missed working out, or the lapse in your resolve at the shoe store because that’s what will help you stay motivated. Ellen Meier SAN DIEGO
Make a bet you’re afraid to lose. My brother-in-law, Paul, and I wanted to lose weight, so we challenged each other to drop a certain number of pounds by a set date. Whoever lost the bet had to buy 40 SPIRIT JANUARY 2014

the winner a bottle of wine of his or her choosing—with no dollar limit. Paul has expensive taste in wine, so it was a good motivator! Lorraine Farrell HOOKSETT, NEW HAMPSHIRE
Pull up your list of resolutions once a month, and go over them. It’s hard to keep big-picture goals constantly in mind with all of the little day-to-day distractions that occur. I find that the monthly review helps remind me both of what I’ve (hopefully) already accomplished and what I had intended to strive for in the first place. Mary Donatelli PHILADELPHIA
Don’t choose a resolution you know you can’t keep. Being realistic and starting small will help you actually achieve some success, which should lead to setting greater goals. Also, be sure to celebrate your progress along the way. Charlie Riley

Don’t Delay Efficiency pro Timothy Pychyl helps you end the cycle of procrastination.
1
Be Specific “Vague intentions, like ‘I’ll do it this weekend,’ lack the power to move us to act,” Pychyl says. “Instead, be precise when setting goals. Research has shown that connecting tasks to actions is most effective. For example, tell yourself: ‘As soon as I finish my coffee Saturday morning, I’m going to....’”
2
Think Long-Term “Procrastination is similar to other forms of self-regulation failure like gambling or overeating. In each case, we seek shortterm, feel-good strategies that ultimately subvert our future goals. We need to remind ourselves that the true reward comes from getting the job done. Even making 42 SPIRIT JANUARY 2014
F1_topfive_ebk.indd 42
progress on a goal will spur further motivation and action.”
3
Use Willpower Wisely “We often fail to start on a project at the intended time because our get-up-and-go has gotten up and gone. Avoid burnout by tackling dreaded duties first thing. If you’re still having trouble getting started, remind yourself of the value of the task at hand and why you’re doing it.”
4
Curb Cop-Outs “Avoid statements like ‘I’ll feel like doing this tomorrow’ or ‘I work better under pressure.’ The truth of the matter is usually ‘I only work under pressure,’ and research has demonstrated that we actually make more errors when doing so. When you challenge such thoughts, you’re able to see how irrational they really are.”
5
Pinpoint Emotions “The less we identify our emotions, the more we
procrastinate. By being mindful of our feelings, we can recognize what’s making us want to run away from a task—whether it’s fear, frustration, or boredom—and use it to move forward. Negative emotions do not define us. But if we let them, they will undermine us.” Timothy A. Pychyl is the author of Solving the Procrastination Puzzle: A Concise Guide to Strategies for Change.

The Numbers
There are now more than
7,1oo,ooo,ooo mobile devices on Earth. In other words, humans are outnumbered by pinging smartphones and glowing tablets, at least according to a report from computer networking company Cisco. In 2013, mobile Web traffic from phones alone accounted for more than 17 percent of all Internet usage, and Cisco is predicting quite the boom in years to come. “By 2017, there will be more than 10 billion mobile-connected devices. That’s an average of 1.4 devices for every man, woman, and child on the planet,” says vice president Doug Webster. Oh, and forget 4G— network speeds are expected to be up to seven times faster within four years. Unrivaled speed and ballooning numbers? The rise of the machines is upon us! This sounds like a job for Schwarzenegger.

Been swearing by Rum Raisin lipstick forever? You’re not alone. A survey by CouponCodes4u.com found that on average a woman keeps her beauty regimen for more than a decade, with 56 percent saying they’d only ditch an adored product if it was discontinued. A signature style isn’t a bad thing, says makeup artist Amy Nadine, who works with stars like Susan Sarandon. “If [a woman] has found a look that works, but her hair and clothes evolve with the trends, it’s fine.” But if Clinton was president when you last updated your look, why not try something new? The trick is starting small. Rather than going for a total makeover, “pick one feature at a time,” Nadine says. Change—it can be a beautiful thing.

of IT professionals keep their job a secret.
And no, “IT” is not a new code name for the NSA. According to a survey by TEKsystems, an IT staffing and services company, more than onefourth of tech workers hide their day job to avoid endless service requests from friends and family. Otherwise “someone finds out they work in IT, and the questions range from ‘How can I get my wireless router to work?’ to ‘What software should I be using?’” says Jason Hayman, a TEKsystems research manager. The poll also revealed that 57 percent of senior-level employees are expected to be available 24/7—further fueling the desire to separate their home lives from work. Despite such nuisances, more than 80 percent wouldn’t change careers. Now that’s what we call tech support.

Why is giving back good for business? “Giving back feels good, and that alone is a reason to make it part of your life and part of your business—but it has a positive ROI as well. When you incorporate giving into your business model, your customers become your marketers. We’ve certainly seen that with TOMS. People don’t just wear the shoes or the sunglasses; they’re evangelists for our ‘One for One’ mission. It also translates to attracting equally passionate employees who have a desire to be part of something bigger than themselves. Any business can do this, and you don’t have to be offering a percentage of your profits. It can be as simple as encouraging your employees to be engaged with their local community a number of days out of the year and allowing them the time to do so.” Blake Mycoskie is the author of Start Something That Matters. He recently launched TOMS Marketplace, an e-commerce platform featuring a curated selection of goods from other philanthropy-minded companies.

One of six kids growing up in a single-parent home in Inglewood, California, Edwards was fascinated with drawing sneakers. In high school, he won a Reebok design competition, fueling his dream to become a footwear designer. Design school was not in the budget upon graduation, but he balked at advice to forget footwear and focus on a career in the military or fast-food restaurant management. Instead, he attended night school and lucked into a life-changing job as a temp at shoe company LA Gear. Fully aware of his good fortune in landing the gig, Edwards made himself known as the kid who put shoe sketches in the suggestion box. Six months and 180 drawings later, company founder Robert Greenberg rewarded Edwards’ determination by hiring the 19-year-old and taking him under his wing. Today, Edwards credits his mentor with paving his way in the business. “He was running a major company and gave me a start. I asked a lot of questions, and he always had an open door.” Edwards still feels Greenberg’s influence every day. There are the little things—like getting an idea recorded the moment he has it and reading industry news each morning. And the big ones—like valuing
F2_Trend_JM.indd 58
hard work. Edwards says Greenberg’s crazy work ethic “taught me that no matter how important you become, there’s another level of effort required to stay there.” Eventually, Greenberg left LA Gear to start Skechers. Edwards followed him there and, by age 28, had launched his own brand. In 2000, Edwards was lured to Oregon by Nike, where, in 2007, he achieved high-top immortality when he became one of only six people ever to design an Air Jordan. In 2011, he gave it all up to open Portland-based Pensole Footwear Design Academy and become a fulltime mentor. Edwards says, “I had reached the peak in my industry, and my calling was to provide the pathway I didn’t have and to open the door for the next generation of talent.” That calling to help people achieve their dreams is another thing Edwards learned from Greenberg. “I want him to know the opportunity he gave me in 1989 is living on today through the students I’m reaching.” That legacy of mentorship is definitely alive at Pensole. Edwards describes the four-week program as “a farm system” for the footwear design industry. So far, the system is more Boston Red Sox than Bad News Bears, sending up more than 60 former students to work professionally for brands like Nike, The North Face, Under Armour, and Adidas. Win-win-win. MENTEE, KNOW THYSELF As the more than 600 kids who apply for every 20 slots at Pensole can attest, securing a quality mentor is no easy feat. In fact, some experts say mentorship is on the decline. In their book Rebooting Work: Transform How You Work in the Age of

Entrepreneurship, Maynard Webb and Carlye Adler suggest that ever-shrinking employee tenure, increasingly burdensome workloads, and a fiercely competitive job market are making traditional mentorships a scarce commodity. That doesn’t mean finding one is impossible, though, as long as you know where you want to go and have the gumption to find the Cynthia Downs Apodaca
person to help you get there. Depending on your circumstance, Woodward says, the right player might be within your own company if they can “help you understand the politics, history, culture, and traditions of the place.” While some of that can come from your boss, “it’s important to find someone who can give you off-therecord perspective,” he says.

If that person runs with a pack above your pay grade and your company doesn’t have a formal mentoring program, Woodward recommends volunteering for cross-functional workgroups that allow you to interact with otherwise inaccessible colleagues. But don’t fret if finding a mentor within your workplace is unrealistic. Woodward says a guru can be anyone who helps you assess whether your routine is on a roll or in a rut. Are you a female writer, a Hispanic engineer, a food-truck entrepreneur? Woodward suggests seeking out special-interest groups and joining local chapters of professional organizations. If these avenues are dead ends, there is always what might be called the “Hot Pursuit” strategy. That is, do some research on your industry, focus on key players, and doggedly pursue them—in a nice way. Sending a message via LinkedIn, for example, may, in a kinder, gentler form of cold call, yield a connection. Wherever you look, Woodward says it’s key to find someone who will be “open, honest, and direct.” The flip side of seeking honesty is being tough enough to take the advice to heart. He says, “If you’re not willing to hear it, there is no value in the relationship.” Or relationships. Woodward says that the mentor capable of counseling you in a nonprofit work environment won’t necessarily be the person to guide you through freelance nation. “I hear people talking about having a mentor, but it’s important to think about multiple mentors that fit with the circumstances in your life.” THERE’S A RIGHT WAY AND A WRONG WAY Imagine receiving an email with the subject line “INTERESTED IN YOUR EXPERTISE.” The sender addresses you as “Dear

professional,” expresses a desire to secure you as a mentor, then proceeds to ask for more information about your work and how you might help them succeed. While that all-caps flattery may lure you into opening the message, you’ll soon decide a mentee who doesn’t bother to learn your name isn’t likely to be worth your effort. Delete.
“You need to demonstrate your potential, make a good impression, and [show] that you’re worth getting behind,” Woodward says. “They have to look at you as someone who is going to listen, take feedback, and do something with it.” In choosing who to mentor, Edwards says he’s most interested in those who prove they are willing to work. He tells his students,
“There will always be people who are more talented than me, but no one will outwork me.’” His best tip, though, is the most fundamental one. “Early on, I saw the value in asking and receiving. Some people don’t even ask.” WHAT’S IN IT FOR ME? Of course, you can’t have the Karate Kid without Mr. Miyagi, which means those with enviable skills must find worth in sharing their hard-earned wisdom. As it turns out, there are reasons aplenty. For those in senior positions, Woodward says, “It’s a good way to get perspective. It’s a way to be reminded of what it’s like to start out. It’s also a way to give back.” But there’s more to it than fulfilling some karmic professional obligation; you may just learn something. Edwards says his students often remind him he doesn’t know everything. “This industry is young and current. When I’m mentoring, I’m learning from them as well, so I see it as a trade.” Don’t take on a protégé just to say you have one, Edwards advises. “Not everyone is cut out to be a mentor. It’s something people like to say they are,” but it can be counterproductive if handled poorly. SO MAYBE IT’S TIME to consider whether a mentor can help you launch or make it to the next rung. If you do find yourself in a symbiotic relationship with a knowledgeable colleague, remember to keep a good thing going. As Edwards relates to each of his students, “I wouldn’t have achieved all of this without guidance, so I challenge them to mentor not one, but two, so it keeps multiplying. That’s what it’s about. If it stops with you, the chain ends.” Jill Coody Smits is an Austin, Texas– based journalist. Find her online at blueseedcommunications.com.

TIPS FROM IJL DATING EXPERT
B
elieve it or not, your computer screen may be getting in the way of your dating life. While we may use technology to stay “connected” to friends and family, when it comes to meeting potential partners, the digital world obscures the thing that matters most: chemistry.
2
To get a pulse on today’s dating scene, we talked to Cindy Herington, one of the many dating experts at It’s Just Lunch, the world’s largest personalized matchmaking service. Here she explains why you should ditch the laptop for the tabletop.
1
Ditch the Laptop
The premise of It’s Just Lunch is simple: a lunch date or drink after work is the ideal first date. It’s a no pressure, relaxed setting where you can actually talk face-to-face. “Real chemistry happens in person,” Herington says. “You may be having a great online relationship, but when you finally meet, you discover that the person you’ve spent so much time

5 TIPS FOR MODERN DATING with in cyberspace is nothing like what you imagined.” Replace those digital emoticons with a no pressure, casual lunch date and you’ll know immediately if you should take it to the next level.
2
Get a Wingman (or Wingwoman)
It’s Just Lunch’s clients often refer to their matchmakers as their “dating wingmen” (or wingwomen) because they handle all of the dating logistics. Herington describes her role, saying, “We’re genuinely interested in understanding our clients. We listen. We really get to know your personality and what you’re looking for in that significant other.” Every IJL match is hand-selected. There’s no online profile for the world to see and it’s all confidential. After the date, It’s Just Lunch matchmakers receive feedback from each client in order to fine-tune their next match. “We offer something online services don’t: someone to talk to,” Herington says. Imagine having a full-time dating wingwoman who really understands you, working for you while you’re focusing on your career and personal obligations.
“IT’S JUST LUNCH HELPS YOU MAKE TIME FOR THE THINGS THAT MATTER...”
3
Boost Your Dating ROI
Who wants to spend hours sifting through online profiles and trying to connect via email, pokes and winks? You don’t have time to waste playing digital guessing games and meeting the wrong people. When you’re investing your time and energy in something important, you deserve a strong return. With IJL’s personalized match selection
and date coordination, clients are able to save valuable time and energy. “After we select your match, we’ll describe the person to you and confirm a convenient time and place for you to meet. All you have to do is show up and have fun meeting someone new,” Herington says. Less time searching equals more time dating. That’s realized ROI.
4
Date Smarter
Herington reminds singles who contact her that they can have a career and a relationship. They just have to “date smarter.” “If finding someone to share your life with is important to you, you can make time and have it all,” she says. “If you don’t have time to do your taxes, you hire a CPA. If you don’t have time to manage your investments, you hire a financial planner. It’s Just Lunch helps you make time for the things that matter. IJL helps you date smarter.” Since It’s Just Lunch matchmakers take care of all the matching and logistics, you can focus on finding that elusive chemistry in the offline world. IJL is a better, smarter way to date and increase your odds of finding that someone special.

S SHAUN WHITE, America’s most famous flame-haired athlete, attempts to Double McTwist his way to a third gold medal at next month’s Olympics in Sochi, Russia, it grows harder to remember the days when snowboarding was considered weird. Only a few decades ago, snowboarding was seen as a fringe sport, one best left to grungy teens and reckless lunatics. In fact, in the ’80s, few ski resorts even allowed snowboarders on their slopes. How things change. It raises the question: What will be the next weird sport to morph into a gold medal– worthy sensation? Ice golf? Lightsaber fencing? Extreme pencil fighting? Okay, probably none of those. But that doesn’t matter to the weekend warriors who participate in the countless odd competitions played out across America each year, from Big Wheel races in the streets of San Francisco and chuck wagon dashes in dusty Clinton, Arkansas, to the mud football championships in North Conway, New Hampshire. Sol Neelman would know. For more than eight years, the Portland, Oregon– based photographer has traveled the country documenting our affinity for off beat athletics. “Most of these events have a similar sensibility and humor, a lightheartedness,” Neelman says. “People are doing it because they want to have fun, and that’s what I come across almost all the time. The common denominator is usually costumes, cheap beer, and lots of laughter.” “So many of our organized sports are too organized,” says Lloyd Bradley, author of The Rough Guide to Cult Sport 68 SPIRIT JANUARY 2014

and a former fitness editor at British GQ. “They’re just not mad enough.” Contrarily, the diverse world of wacky sports, he says, “appeals to our sense of individuality. People don’t want to conform, go along with the rules, or buy all this equipment. They’d rather make something up as they went along.” Compared to traditionally strenuous sports, these bizarro endeavors tend to be blessedly easy. “These are sports that anyone can do,” says Neelman, who estimates that he has photographed almost 200 of these madcap competitions. “Some are a little more nuanced than others, and some are definitely more athletic, but if you want to try the Santa Speedo Run, anyone can do that.” Plus, the majority of these alternative sports don’t require fancy gear. All you need for Liberal, Kansas’ International Pancake Day race are a few basic pantry supplies, an apron, and a skillet. The frog jumping competition in Northern California’s Calaveras County requires only the frog. There’s just something about all that weirdness—the frogs, the tiny trikes, the mud—that brings people together. These unconventional sports offer an opportunity for those with quirkier (dare we say, geekier?) interests to emerge from the shadows and embrace their passions. “I think these sports are a chance for people to say, ‘You know what? I love surfing, I love my dog. Now I want to hang out with people who love dog surfing,’” Neelman says. There’s no real glory to be won in, say, a beard-growing contest, no medals or magazine covers to be had. And that’s the point. “These are people doing things because nobody is watching.” 70 SPIRIT JANUARY 2014

Every day for the past 39 years, a man nicknamed the Raven has tackled an 8-mile run along Miami’s South Beach. It’s an incredible streak— and as inspiring as it is exhausting. BY LAURA LEE HUTTENBACH PHOTOGRAPHY BY MARY BETH KOETH

Dark aviator sunglasses cover the top half of his face, filtering the mid-October daylight and leaving open to the elements a pair of chapped lips that, at the moment, are curling into a smile. Raven is pleased that so many of his disciples have turned out for his 63rd birthday. We are celebrating the only way we know how—by joining Raven for his eight-mile run in the South Beach sands. The first person in the group to spot me is Lorenzo, aka Butcher. It is 5:40 p.m., and I’m running late. “Hurry up, White Lightning,” he shouts. “Get in the picture.” Picking up my pace, I slip into the shot before the shutter clicks. Butcher extends a closed fist, and I return the customary greeting by pounding
his knuckles. Dave “Saltshaker” offers another fist bump. A financier in his early 60s, Saltshaker has just come back today from his summer home in Rhode Island. “I guess it’s time for roll call,” Raven announces, commanding our attention. And with that, as he has done every day for the past 39 years, Raven takes his first steps away from the lifeguard stand. His upper back, hunched over a deeply tanned torso, turns his body into a 5-foot-10 apostrophe. After so many years, tight ligaments have shortened his stride. His right foot lands heavier than his left, giving Raven the gait of a graceful pirate with a peg leg. Falling in behind our leader, the flock heads south to Government Cut, the southernmost point of Miami Beach. From there, Raven’s eightmile birthday course will take us north to 47th Street and back to the Fifth Street lifeguard stand. There are so many runners in attendance that today’s roll call—the ritual reciting of nicknames bestowed upon each runner by our affectionate host— will occupy at least the first mile. “Right here, on my left,” Raven begins. “He’s had many a near-death experience—he’s Close Call!” The group claps as Close Call, a middleaged Mensa member from Finland, ducks his chin into his chest and smiles shyly. “In front of us, wearing pink, she’s hot, she’s spicy, and she’s from Chile—she’s the Chili Pepper!” Her long, curly hair bouncing beneath a white visor, the bubbly real estate agent waves with the poise of a beauty pageant contestant. In the thick of today’s pack is Chocolate Chip— “He eats chocolate four or more times a day”—a retired endodontist who always brightens the beach with a joke at the four-mile mark. Then there’s a 77-year-old former mechanic wearing two knee braces—“If you have a boss you don’t like, have him hire Chapter 11!”—whose resume lists five airlines, two boatyards, and a restaurant as places of employment that went belly-up. Runners from 12 different countries and four generations join us on this day. Even the thing we have in common divides us. Breaking away from the pack early, Issie “Dizzy,” a Cuban-American middle school principal, is training for a 75-mile ultramarathon. And though he isn’t present on Raven’s birthday run, Ed “Hurricane,” at 82, regularly power walks the

eight miles while blasting classical music out of padded headphones. I used to run cross-country and can finish a mile in under seven minutes, but with Raven I slow down in order to hear his stories, delivered at a 14-minute-mile pace. Running with Raven is like listening to a live podcast. He has the crystalline voice of a radio announcer. To Raven’s right, I spot Zane “Giggler,” who has just retired after 30 years as a Miami Beach lifeguard. “Good to see you, Giggler!” I shout. Raven nods. “You know, Giggler’s run at least once a year for the last 24 years. I’m not supposed to have favorites, but he’s one of them.” An avid flute player, Giggler doesn’t leave home without his plastic recorder, which bounces against the beads that drape his neck. The instrument adds to his eclectic apparel of hiking boots, black socks, khaki shorts, and a button-down, topped off with a wool chauffeur’s cap. “When did you meet Raven?” I ask. “My first day on the job back in 1982,” he says. “But I’d already heard about him. Other lifeguards told me you could set your watch by the Raven.” It took Raven eight years to convince him to attempt the eight miles. “It was all soft sand back then,” Giggler recalls. “And it would just grab your every step, pulling you into the ground.” Before the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers finished its Miami Beach oceanfront reclamation project in 1981, Raven ran close to the water on a narrow beach, his feet sinking into deep, thick sand. But even on a firmer surface, Giggler says he struggles: “My body, at the six-mile mark, will just say, ‘What are you thinking?’ Then tomorrow I guarantee you I’m not waking up and thinking about running another eight.”
T
HE RAVEN FITNESS plan probably isn’t for everyone. It goes something like this: Wake up. Run eight miles. Repeat every day for 39 years. And there’s more to it. Two hours before the run, Raven bikes six blocks from his Ocean Drive apartment to the outdoor gym at Ninth Street. There, with young bodybuilders and gymnasts swinging from the monkey bars in the background, Raven drops to the sand in push-up position. He completes one set of his age, plus one rep, then moves to the pull-up bar. He grunts through three sets of 20, followed by a 45-second hang with the bar resting against the back of his neck. That happens, as one might guess, every day. It turns out Raven isn’t alone in his everyday running habit. In the late-1990s, he answered a

call from a reporter named George A. Hancock, who was putting together a list of American streak runners. At the time, Raven’s streak of 8,000-plus days didn’t even make the top 10. The longest-running streak—16,437 days—started in 1968, seven years before Raven’s. The owner of that streak, Mark Covert, just “pulled a Cal Ripken,” according to the U.S. Running Streak Association’s president, Mark Washburne, and voluntarily ended the run this past July. list. Association by-laws define a streak as “running at least one continuous mile within each calendar day under one’s own body power (without the utilization of any type of health or mechanical aid other than prosthetic devices).” All running surfaces—roads, tracks, and treadmills—meet the criteria. “I’ve run every day, but I’ve done it in various states and countries,” says Washburne, whose own streak is about to turn 24 years old. “The fact that Raven runs the same course every day—that really separates him from the list. I don’t know
anybody else who’s done that.” Two years ago, when HBO’s Real Sports producers called Washburne looking for someone to feature in a segment on obsessive runners, he suggested Raven. “A lot of reporters say we’re obsessed, but we like to say we’re dedicated. We prefer a positive spin,” explains Washburne, on the phone from his home in New Jersey. “I mean, he’s doing something healthy, like brushing your teeth every day.” Raven’s personal rules for the streak are of his own making, and they often leave him at the mercy of the environment. One day in April 1994, he JANUARY 2014 SPIRIT

was shuttling back and forth from the bathroom with an exhausting bout of food poisoning when his internal clock struck “eight miles.” He walked to the beach, taunting Mother Nature with the thought, At least it can’t get any worse. Just then, he recalls, “The sky turned black. There was a coldness in the air, with lightning everywhere. I knew it was going to be bad.” After three-tenths of a mile, golf ball–size hail hammered his shoulders and face. Pulling his glasses off so they wouldn’t break, he felt lumps rising on his scalp. “The surfers had their boards covering their heads. You could hear the pounding—boom, boom, boom.” During that same storm, Giggler took refuge in his lifeguard stand. “I remember the captain pulled up in the truck and told me to get in, and I was like, ‘Uh-uh, no way. I’m not stepping one foot out there,’” Giggler recalls. “All of a sudden, I see Raven coming towards us with blood running down his face. He was getting bludgeoned— like, stoned by God. All I could do was laugh.” One lifeguard stand later, Raven ducked under an awning to take refuge. “If I had run two or three more minutes, I could’ve died. So I stopped and ran in place for 10 minutes,” he says. “That was a hairy one. But the fear at least made my food poisoning go away.” A story like that should finish with, “That was the worst weather I’ve ever run through.” But it doesn’t. On October 15, 1999, Hurricane Irene
blew 86-mph winds in Raven’s face. “It wasn’t the strongest hurricane we got,” Raven says. “Andrew was stronger, Wilma was stronger, but those came in the morning. Irene came at 5 p.m., just as we got to the beach.” Three runners— Gringo, Springman, and Raven’s girlfriend, Miracle—joined him. While his companions wore hooded windbreakers and goggles, Raven, as always, went shirtless. “Gringo was having a blast, doing airplanes,” recalls Raven. “But for me it was extremely painful. In those winds, the sand feels like needles. And it stuck to me for two weeks.”

VEN ON A RAINY Friday evening South Beach is astir. Louboutin stilettos click against the pavement. Couples hug under umbrellas, and valets park Maseratis. Waiting on the sidewalk for a sit-down interview, Raven is wearing his street uniform of black pants and a shoelace belt. Up top, chest hair pours out of his unbuttoned black Levi’s jacket. “I’m sorry I’m late,” I say, wiggling out of my raincoat. “I tried to call, but you’d already left.” Without a cellphone or a computer, Raven can only be reached in person or on his landline. As we take our seats at a busy Starbucks, customers stare, making Raven uncommonly self-conscious. “I think they’re trying to figure us out,” he says, pointing to a family of four whose eyes are fixed on our table. The background music steals his focus. When “What Becomes

of the Brokenhearted” fills the air, Raven sings along. “This was a hit when I was in high school,” he says. Almost everyone here looks like someone who has crossed his path, and he points out the resemblance. By the time the coffee shop closes, we haven’t covered much ground. “Would you be more comfortable if we talk at your apartment?” I ask. “I think so, White Lightning,” he says. “But I have to warn you, it’s a little messy.” The following night, relaxing on the torn cushion of his black leather sofa, Raven is articulate and methodical. Next to him, stacked higher than his head, red and blue plastic crates overflow with LPs, cassettes, and old newspapers. Shoeboxes stuffed with letters teeter above them. A cut-out photograph of Johnny Cash, wearing his trademark black button-down shirt, is taped to the wall above Raven’s first record player. Below that, he has pinned a Nixon bumper sticker saved from the 1968 campaign. “I like to collect things,” he says, putting it mildly. “Some say hoarder. Miracle says saver. I say collector. I think it came from my childhood. We didn’t have much money, so everything I got, I cherished.”
RAVEN ISN’T FAZED WHEN PEOPLE CALL HIM CRAZY. “I JUST SAY, ‘THIS IS WHAT I DO. IT’S WHAT WORKS FOR ME.’” FAITH HEALING “Nobody sees what I see,” says Raven’s girlfriend, Priscilla “Miracle.” “The pain he’s in is awful.”
Looking around at the fortress of clutter that wreathes his private life, it’s hard to connect this Raven with the spirited raconteur who, every day, assembles a diverse bunch of individuals in the name of community and exercise. His followers would be surprised to discover that, as a boy, their talkative leader was painfully shy. “If I had to describe my childhood in one word, it would be lonely,” he says. An only child of divorced parents growing up in Miami’s South Beach neighborhood, Raven— né Robert Kraft—had little interaction with kids his own age. Now a gleaming mecca for the rich and famous, South Beach, circa the 1950s, was wall-to-wall with retirement homes. “We used to call it God’s Waiting Room,” Raven says. “Old people would just be out on the porch, waiting to die.” When he was made to repeat first grade, his teacher wrote on his report card: Robert has trouble socializing. When he’s spoken to, he just nods. A single mom, Mary Cooper Kraft worked the graveyard shift at a 24-hour drugstore store while her son spent nights alone. In the morning, he would lie awake, frozen in bed, until he heard his mother’s high heels scale the wooden steps of their apartment. “I’d breathe and think, Phew, I can live another day. She’s here. I’m going to get fed. I was terrified of being an orphan.” Robert was excited when his mom started dating an older man with a car, but the happiness wore off quickly when “the Eagle” (as he’d nicknamed him) returned to his drinking, gambling, and womanizing ways. After learning the goodfor-nothing was going to become his stepfather, Robert, age 14, put on a black shirt. “I looked in the mirror and said, ‘That’s me. Other people can wear colors, but I’m only wearing black.’” His dark wardrobe drew attention from classmates, who taunted him with lyrics to the popular Rolling Stones song “Paint It Black.” Irked by their teasing, and apathetic to his studies, Robert dropped out of high school at age 16, with dreams of becoming a Dylanesque songwriter. He bought a Greyhound bus ticket to Nashville, Tennessee, where The Johnny Cash Show was filming its first season. Robert waited around back at the Ryman Auditorium to shake Cash’s hand and slip him a lyrics sheet. “Security back then wasn’t as tight,” he recalls. “You could actually talk to people.” For songwriting inspiration, Robert visited the post office to study Most Wanted posters. “Fugitive on the Run” was one of the songs he penned

in Music City. But the pressures of self-promotion in such a bustling industry town ate at Robert’s soul, and he missed South Beach. “I had to be someone I wasn’t,” he remembers. “My stomach was always growling and churning. I think I had ulcers. I didn’t feel right.” In one last effort, Robert pressed a new song into Cash’s palm after another broadcast at the Ryman. Cash told Robert, “I’m writing all my own stuff now, buddy, but maybe this guy can help you out. He’s a songwriter.” Cash nodded to the man on his left, whom Robert already knew. “I’ll never forget it,” he says. “Johnny turned and gave him my lyric sheet. The guy seemed a little high or stoned or something. But he didn’t say a word. He just took my song and stuck it in his right pocket.” The lyric was untitled and without a copyright. “I just figured if he liked it, he would call me.” Six months later, back in South Beach, Robert was listening to his

Wait a minute, he thought. I know those lyrics. I wrote those lyrics. He sprinted back to his mother’s apartment and, fingers shaking, dialed the radio station, thinking, This is it. I’ve finally made it. The radio DJ picked up, and, before he could even say hello, Robert interrupted him. “Who wrote that Waylon Jennings song you just played?” he asked. “Who’s the songwriter?” The DJ told him the name, and it was not Robert Kraft.
Without proof, Robert had no recourse—and his downward spiral began. “I became very angry, with a hair-trigger temper,” he recalls. “I felt like everybody was against me. My father had left, my mom married the Eagle, my song was stolen—everything. Life was against me. I couldn’t trust anybody.” He started drinking and hanging out with unsavory characters. As Robert tumbled into depression, his song climbed higher and higher up the charts. Two years after his aspirational journey to Nashville, Robert was slumming it at the old pier in South Beach when “Bulldog,” a Vietnam

Touchdown, Birmingham! In Alabama, all things can be explained in football terms. In the case of Birmingham, the state’s largest metro and economic hub, one might say the city is headed into the third quarter after back-to-back touchdowns in the first half. It’s called momentum. No longer does Birmingham find itself hungry for champions who might clear the way for progress. Rather, this city in the heart of the south has rallied behind a few big plays and stirred a cultural momentum that has earned deserved national attention. It’s clear to visitors as soon as they step off the plane that nothing in Birmingham is the same as it was even a year ago. The BirminghamShuttlesworth International Airport has gone through a massive terminal modernization that involved stripping the airport down to the steel beams and rebuilding anew. The airport itself captures some of the city’s incredible culture, featuring a display of photography from the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute and a children’s play area designed by the local McWane Science Center. Once you leave the airport and make the short drive into the city center, you’ll find a southern city brimming with a new energy. Here are a few not-to-miss highlights: Railroad Park/Regions Field: If Birmingham could point to one spot where the momentum began, it’s here.Transformed from industrial emptiness to beautiful downtown park complete with a covered outdoor pavilion and a flowing

stream. Just last spring, the city opened the adjacent Regions Field baseball stadium and brought its minor league team into the city for a season that ended in record ticket sales and a Southeast Regional championship.
All-new airport Travelers familiar with Birmingham’s airport may not recognize it when they land. Here’s what to expect at BHM: • New dining options including popular Birmingham eatery Jim ‘N Nicks Community Barbecue, local craft brewery Good People Brewing Co., and national favorites such as Chick-Fil-A and Starbucks.
Food scene: Birmingham was recently named one of Zagat’s “7 Up-and-Coming Food Cities Around the U.S.” Locals have long known food was one of the city’s greatest strengths, with local favorites Chef Frank Stitt’s Bottega and Chez Fon Fon, as well as Iron Chef Chris Hasting’s Hot and Hot Fish Club. Newer options include the hip and delicious El Barrio Restaurante Y Bar Downtown and Todd English P.U.B. in the city’s developing Uptown entertainment district.
• Free WiFi and new charging stations throughout the terminal
Historical attractions: There’s never been a better time to visit the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute – now on the heels of the city’s 50th commemoration of the events of 1963. Study up on the city’s industrial history at Vulcan Park & Museum, which recently underwent a full-scale renovation. Also, be sure to visit the Birmingham Zoo with its newly opened Children’s Zoo.

Events: In April and May alone the region will host NASCAR at the Talladega SuperSpeedway, Indy Racing at Barber Motorsports Park, the Magic City Art Connection fine arts festival, the Schaeffer Eye Center Crawfish Boil food and music festival and the Regions Tradition PGA Champions Tour tournament. Fall brings filmakers in for Sidewalk Moving Picture Festival.
The all-new Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport attracts travelers from across central Alabama and beyond looking to travel non-stop to top destinations for leisure and business. The airport offers more than 100 daily flights.
• New in-line baggage system and streamlined central security checkpoint • Family amenities including in-airport play areas and breastfeeding suites for new moms

veteran and fighter at Miami’s famed Fifth Street Gym, struck up a conversation with him. “Come on, Johnny,” Bulldog said in a thick Brooklyn accent, referring to Robert by an all-purpose nickname. “I’m about to do my roadwork.” Roadwork—jogging and throwing punches—didn’t really appeal to Robert, but with nowhere else to go he followed
Bulldog. After a mile, the fighter was still chatting casually as Robert gasped for air. “You can do it, Johnny,” Bulldog said. Robert decided that, even if he dropped dead, he wasn’t going to stop. Fortunately, roadwork was only two miles that day. Panting but still jogging, Robert finished just steps behind Bulldog. And for the first time in a long time, he felt good.
He joined Bulldog a couple of times a week, and by the end of 1974—a few years into the routine—Robert was running almost every day in the soft sand. The run and regimentation eased his anger. He gained confidence. He became friends with the lifeguards, gym rats, and free spirits of South Beach, one of whom landed Robert a job as a nighttime security guard, a gig that paid the bills and didn’t interfere with his running schedule. Along with the new persona came a new name. Inspired by the mysterious black attire, nocturnal tendencies, and deep interest in songs and songwriting, Bulldog dubbed his friend “the Raven.” January 1, 1975, was a clear, crisp, and sunny day in South Beach. With Bulldog running by his side, Raven made a New Year’s resolution: “I’m going to run a whole year straight—every day, eight miles.” Eight miles because, he says, “nine was too much, and seven wasn’t challenging.” Bulldog laughed. “Come on, Johnny. What are you thinking?” But Raven was determined. Watch me, he thought. After three miles, Bulldog broke off, and Raven kept running. “I had never gone through with a goal in my life, except to get to Nashville,” he remembers. “And with that, everything fell apart. This was going to be my thing. I built my whole world, my whole life, around that run. I had no idea what I was getting into.”
B
ACK ON THE beach a few weeks after his birthday run, Raven apologizes for his sluggish pace. “I’m sorry I’m going so damn slow, White Lightning. My legs feel like they are on fire. Hold on, I gotta bend again.” With that, he falls forward in the sand, onto his hands. Pain in his lower back

pushes an involuntary growl from his lips as he stands back up. “It’s like someone’s taking my nerves and twisting them. I’ve never been shot, but I imagine this is what it feels like.” Grimacing, he pushes his thumbs into his tailbone. “If the pain would just go away, I’d be in such good shape.” Raven has been diagnosed with severe spinal stenosis, a narrowing of the spinal column around the spinal cord, which compresses nerve roots. He also lives with arthritis, sciatica, and scoliosis. Most people in his condition would have already had surgery, but recovery would keep Raven off the sand, and without health insurance Raven can’t afford an operation. “Whether he can continue for another three months, or six months, or a year—it’s really up to his pain tolerance,” says Vivian Hernandez-Popp, his physician. “Sometimes,” Raven says, “I can’t even stand up to brush my teeth.” What does a person do when the thing he loves is both killing him and keeping him alive? Without giving his body time to heal, Raven reinjures himself every day. Little wounds nag for weeks. In the HBO Real Sports segment, which aired in 2011, the reporter suggested that on his next hospital visit Raven should maybe run “over to the psychiatric ward.” Raven isn’t fazed when someone calls him crazy. “People tell me that all the time,” he says. “I just say, ‘This is what I do. It works for me.’” Though he has been diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive disorder, he’d prefer not to take medication for it. “It’s a part of me,” he says. “I don’t want to take pills that make me not be myself. People depend on me to be out there, and I don’t want to let them down.” And what about when people tell him to take a day off ? “I say, ‘You’re probably right. I probably would be better if I took a day off.’ Most people need days off,
or else everybody would be a streak runner. Maybe I’m just cut from a different cloth.”
R
AVEN, A DESPERATE outsider as a kid, hasn’t run alone since 2005. In 2007, Miami Beach Mayor David Dermer proclaimed October 17— Raven’s birthday—“Robert Raven Kraft Day,” referring to the daily Raven Run as a “bona fide Miami Beach institution.” More than 1,900 people between ages 6 and 82, from every state in the nation and more than 75 countries, have completed an eight-mile run with him. Relationships developed during the eight miles span the globe. Through the Raven network, people have found jobs, friends, and spouses. What he has facilitated for runners has eluded him; Raven has never married, and doesn’t have children. “Sometimes I think it could’ve been interesting to have a family,” he reflects. “But now this run is like my family.” After getting ordained online, Raven has even officiated two weddings of his runners: During a run in 2009, he married Hollywood Flasher and Creve Coeur; then, in 2013, he did the same for Extra and Molder. What started as a New Year’s Resolution has outlasted seven American presidencies and covered more than 100,000 miles. That’s more than 18 round-trips between Miami and Los Angeles. That’s a trip around the world—times four. Back in October, on Raven’s birthday run, Giggler exhaled a whistle at the six-mile mark, signaling it was that time when his body questions his judgment. He turned to me and said, “The thing about Raven is he can make anyone into a runner. People who never thought they could run one mile now run eight with him all the time. He makes people feel special.” Raven’s physical decline worries Giggler, but he is comforted by the belief that “Raven’s spirit will still be running in the sand long after

he ends the streak.... But his spirit was running here before he started, because what Raven does can’t be of the body.” Butcher, running alongside, seconded the effects of Raven’s positive aura. “I used to have an anger management problem,” he confessed. Three years ago, fresh out of prison for drug trafficking, Butcher was seeking a regimen to get his life back on track when, at the pull-up bars, Raven invited him to run. “A guy I was in jail with told me, ‘You gotta find a group to be a part of or something to get involved in,’” recalled Butcher. “Because, you know, there’s no transition from prison to the free world.” After working up to the eight miles, Butcher set out to run with Raven every day for 100 days but instead kept the streak going for 200, setting a record among the Raven Run regulars. “It’s not only Raven but all the positive people you meet out here. I was in a really dark place, and the run just sucks the negativity out of you,” he said. These days Butcher is a calm but demanding personal trainer whose clients include fellow Raven Runners. “God only knows where I’d be without Raven and this run. It’s the best thing that’s ever happened to me.” The man himself doesn’t wax poetic about his accomplishments. Raven is just hoping to stay the course—the one that measures eight miles—a little bit longer. “I’ve found the place I’m most comfortable,” he says, digging deep on yet another day. “Everyone has a place where they shine, and this is where I shine.” Writer Laura Lee “White Lightning” Huttenbach is currently penning Raven’s biography, and photographer Mary Beth “Yellow Rose” Koeth is making a Kickstarter-funded film about his life.

You’ll be blown away by treasures like the Russian Vostok I, which carried the first human into space in April 1961; the Apollo 13 command module Odyssey, which housed the famed crew on their attempted trip to the moon in 1970; and Liberty Bell 7, the space capsule recovered from the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean in 1999 after a flawed mission sank the vessel nearly 40 years earlier. If that doesn’t leave you feeling on top of the world, check out the moon rock collected by Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin during their monumental Apollo 11 lunar mission. eart failure is a condition that affects nearly 6 million Americans, with four identifiable stages that the American Heart Association labels A through D. Fortunately, it is manageable in its early stages with a healthy lifestyle and medication, but according to Dr. Wissam Khalife, director of the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston heart failure treatment program, progressing beyond stage A also means your heart failure symptoms will only worsen. At that point, medical interventions can just slow down their progress. The key which may reverse your chances of developing heart failure is to adopt healthy habits before you progress to stage B. For those people in stage A who are at high risk but have not yet developed heart failure, Khalife recommends the following: • Aerobic exercise three to five times a week for at least 30 minutes each time.
• A vegetarian or Mediterranean diet while limiting salt. Khalife’s easy diet plan is two days a week fish, two days a week vegetarian, two days a week chicken and one day a week red meat (with as much fat removed as possible). • Quitting smoking. • Limiting alcohol, as too much over a long period can cause car-
MOVING YOUR FEET MAY BOOST YOUR BRAINPOWER Taking a walk each day can produce a number of measurable benefits to your health. But did you know that walking could actually help you grow your brain and protect your memory? Supported by the National Institute on Aging, researchers at the University of Pittsburgh conducted a study that showed some surprising results—a simple activity such as walking slows down the effects of aging on cognitive ability. In the study, 299 dementiafree subjects recorded the number of miles they walked over a 13-year period and underwent brain scans to measure the sizes of their brains. Testing to determine potential cognitive damage revealed that people who covered roughly six to nine miles a week had increased gray matter volume—in other words, bigger brains— which is linked with fewer memory problems as the years pass.

While cancer affects millions of Americans each year, researchers from a number of organizations worldwide have encouraging news for those of you that enjoy cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, kale, turnips, cauliflower and bok choy: They may help lower your risk of getting cancer. According to the National Cancer Institute, fiber-rich cruciferous vegetables contain large amounts of nutrients that include carotenoids (beta-carotene, lutein, zeaxanthin); folate; vitamins C, E, and K; and minerals. They also contain a category of substances known as glucosinolates, which not only provide the pungent aroma and flavor in these vegetables, but, when cooked, eaten and digested, break down to compounds that have been shown to combat the spread of cancer during testing of mice and rats. While the result of studies on humans is inconclusive, this research has found links that provide hope for future breakthroughs.

You’re not done yet! Whether you’re an elite athlete striving for a world record, or just looking to beat fatigue, there’s a custom-formulated Mdrive for you. That means more energy, more strength, more endurance, more drive. Invented by Gary Kehoe, an avid hiker, cyclist and world class formulator – Mdrive is a natural source to fuel your competitive drive, and change the way you feel in everything you do. He created the product because he had reached that age in life (you know what we’re talking about) when a man needs to decide if his best days are behind him. Can’t run as fast. Can’t work as long. Can’t keep up. Well this might sound like hype, but Mdrive can help you change all that. Not kidding.
The Mdrive line-up uses clinically-proven ingredients and a blend of natural botanical extracts that deliver powerful, lasting results. Want more energy? Want to feel and be stronger? Want to look more tone and lean? Don’t get us wrong, this is not a magic pill. You will have to do something. You have to show up! To get the best results and have people ask: “What are you doing, because you look great,” you have to take what you eat more seriously. Avoid processed foods and sugar that make you sluggish. You have to get into the gym or simply workout — make a commitment to do something. Anything. Run on the treadmill for 20 mins, exercise your body for 30 or 45 minutes or more 3-5 days a week. But do something.
For Athletes or Weekend Warriors
Just show up! Stop making excuses and make some new priorities. Get up a little earlier or get to the gym after work. We promise, if you make this your motto for the new year “Just Show Up!”– you will find that once you’ve gotten to the gym or put on your running shoes or gotten to the hiking trail, you will do more than you think you were going to do. Your motivation will take over and your inspiration to look and feel better will drive you to your goal. Mdrive was created for people like you. We promise you won’t be disappointed with the results or we will give you your money back. No strings attached.

Staying active can be a difficult proposition for those of us that suffer from knee, back and shoulder pain brought about by arthritis or injury. With more than 100 million Americans affected by musculoskeletal diseases, joint injuries and arthritis, relief from these conditions can bring a new lease on life. Based in Miami, Fla., the Center for Regenerative Medicine employs a variety of non-surgical techniques and orthopedic medicine to return patients to normal, functional levels and help the body heal. Led by medical director Dr. A.J. Farshchian, the Center is a leading practitioner of autologous cell therapy, which injects a patients with their own cells rich in growth factors and platelets. Released into joints and tendons affected by disease, arthritis or injury, these injections assist the body in healing itself at an accelerated rate by stimulating cells to regenerate new tissue. In addition, the team of professionals coordinates a physical therapy program, called Collateral Arterial Flow Exchange, that is designed to focus and direct blood circulation to damaged regions through the collateral arteries, naturally increas-

In spite of all the challenges to our health, people are living longer than ever before. In fact, centenarians are among if not the fastest growing segment of our population. But what can we do to ensure that as our lifespan increases, we may also see our health-span increase? In-home senior care provider Home Care Assistance focuses on extending older adults’ quality of life through preventive methods to help them age comfortably. Happy to 102 is the first book in their senior wellness series that places an emphasis on healthy aging in conjunction with in-home care. Its approach to healthy longevity presents factors such as diet, exercise, sociability, mental challenges and sense of purpose that make the difference not only in how long we live, but also in how well we live. Lily Sarafan, President and chief operating officer of Home Care Assistance and co-author of Happy to 102, says, “One third of your longevity is based on genetics, but guess what that means? Two thirds is based on lifestyle factors—things that we can modify starting tomorrow. If those in their 70s knew it

was possible with a few lifestyle changes to live another 30–40 percent, that in itself would give them the positive outlook on life that it requires to live a life of healthy longevity.” From a caregiver’s perspective, the real issues such as stress and depression that affect them are widespread. With more than 44 million Americans providing 80
percent of the long-term care as informal, unpaid caregivers, studies have shown that family caregivers suffer from depression twice as often as the general population, and ignoring the stress associated with being a caregiver has shown to be the leading cause of caregiver burnout. Typically stressful periods such as the holiday season can add to the hardship involved.

assistance services average around $20 per hour depending on the level of care needed. The cost of regaining time for yourself and the comfort of knowing your loved one is in good hands? Priceless. With each new year, the effort to continue integrating earthfriendly practices into our daily lives becomes more prevalent. This sustainable movement was one of the principal concepts behind the creation of BerryBreeze™, a newly patented device that oxygenates, cleans and reinvigorates fruit, vegetables and other foods stored in a refrigerator. With bacteria, mold and other harmful microbes neutralized by activated oxygen, the impact on our environment is potentially enormous. The 40 percent of edible food that is wasted by Americans is equivalent to tossing away $165 billion every year; reducing that amount by just 15 percent would

feed more than 25 million people. Each individual household could also save up to an estimated $2,200 annually by avoiding food spoilage. But what about public facilities such as hospitals and assisted living complexes that are breeding grounds for even more dangerous bacteria? A BerryBreeze installed in each refrigerator could reduce both risk and waste, amount to even more significant monetary savings and provide another level of protection for our loved ones that require even more care. It’s clear that a resolution to focus on health and wellness can lead you in many directions, but one familiar adage—“When you look good, you feel good”—consistently rings true for aspiring workout warriors looking to take it to the next level. That message makes up just one aspect of the lifestyle movement started by Eddie Compass IV, president and CEO of Next Generation Athletics (nxgathletics.com). ith the holidays in the past and the New Year upon us, what better time is there than now to focus on yourself, set some fitness goals and go to work? Nutritional supplement pioneer DreamBrands was founded by CEO Gary Kehoe to help fortysomething men gain an edge, and his main message is simple—clock in. “The toughest hurdle is always showing up, getting started and staying motivated,” says Kehoe. “I tell friends it can start with small steps: a short walk around the neighborhood with the dog, a slow jog, a scenic hike or a long overdue ride on a bicycle. The great thing about getting started is it leads to bigger and better things.” Initiating a program and seeing results is the ultimate motivator. Pairing a fitness regimen with a sound nutritional plan will only speed results, along with a natural dietary supplement such as Mdrive, DreamBrands’ energizing blend of herbal extracts. Kehoe doesn’t view age as an excuse for not staying fit, which leads us to another favorite credo, this one credited to George Bernard Shaw: “We don’t stop playing because we grow old; we grow
old because we stop playing.” Retired BMX champion Kevin Robinson is living proof of that maxim. A 10-time X Games BMX medalist and BMX world height record-holder, the television analyst, husband and father of three recently underwent a Birmingham Hip Resurfacing—the 45th orthopedic surgery on his elbows, ankles and knees. An alternative to hip replacement that caps the femoral head, the BHR leaves more bone and flexibility for younger, more active recipients who want to return to rigorous physical activity. After opting for the BHR, Robinson chose Dr. Robert Marchand of South County Hospital (schospital. com)—an orthopedic surgeon who shares Robinson’s focus on staying active and fit—to perform the procedure. “Kevin is very young at 41, really

George Brinegar, Brigadier General (USA Retired)
From the Military to Senior Care, George Brinegar Continues to Serve
“
My decision to open a Right at Home franchise has truly changed the second half of my life. It has given me a true sense of purpose and fulfillment.
“
George Brinegar is driven by a sense of service. After spending 28 years proudly serving in the military and sharpening his skills as a great leader, Brinegar retired and spent two years searching for the right business opportunity to complement his knowledge of great systems, service and results. In 2012, Brinegar and his brother-in-law, Jon Searles, found Right at Home and joined the brand as franchisees in Central Texas.
George Brinegar, Right at Home franchisee in Central Texas
“I knew that whatever career decision I made, I had to be doing something that helped others and gave back to my community,” he said. “Right at Home gave me the ability to fully exercise my passion for service.”
“With Right at Home, I am able to provide a much-needed service to seniors in Central Texas, many of whom are veterans,” he said. “Additionally, the brand’s core values perfectly align with both Jon’s and mine.
During his research, Brinegar considered working for someone else, becoming an independent business owner, and owning a franchise. He ultimately decided on owning a franchise, saying that the proven business model and defined processes sold him.
Beyond the brand’s dedication to their clients, Brinegar added that Right at Home’s business model is structured for growth and long-term success, something he wasn’t entirely sure he’d find after his long tenure serving our country.
“When you spend three decades of your life in the military, and then you wake up one day and are no longer serving, it’s a big change you have to adjust to,” he said. “My decision to open a Right at Home franchise has truly changed the second half of my life. It has given me a true sense of purpose and fulfillment.” From a business perspective, Right at Home’s 300+ franchises in six countries have provided over 50 million hours of care to more than 75,000 families, while also creating employment opportunities for over 15,000 caregivers. The investment range for a Right at Home franchise is $72,000 to $126,000, and franchisees in 2012 averaged $1,065,593 in topline revenue with a gross margin of 37%. 1‡ 2‡ If you want to make a remarkable difference in other people’s lives as well as your own, now is the right time to explore becoming a Right at Home franchisee.

The hardest part is to slow him down!” Four weeks after his latest surgery, Robinson is working out again. And he attributes much of
his ability to persist to the nutritional supplement Play Again—an oral, liquid highmolecular-weight form of hyaluronic acid. Present in joint fluid, hyaluronic acid is also DR. THE CENTER FOR REGENERATIVE MEDICINE A NON-SURGICAL TECHNIQUE TO FIGHT AGAINST ARTHRITIS AND SPORTS INJURIES
The Knee Diaries: SJ is a 60-year-old male with the chief complaint of knee pain who visited The Center for Regenerative Medicine over a year ago. He was diagnosed with bone-on-bone osteoarthritis of the left knee, causing much pain and discomfort; at that point he was told only a total knee replacement could help him. He is otherwise healthy. On exam he had point tenderness to the medial side of the left knee (medical lingo: inner side). An X-ray showed severe arthritis of the knee (X-ray on the left). Patient started receiving treatments at The Center for Regenerative Medicine. Today he is feeling better (X-ray on the right). This is how it works: The physician introduces Cell Therapy into damaged, arthritic cells by means of a precise injection. This process is followed by several other modalities, including Collateral Artery Flow Exercises (C.A.F.E.), in order to accelerate the process. Depending on tissue damage, severity of the condition and the size of the joint that needs to be injected, people usually need a series of 1 to 6 treatments to improve. There is usually no downtime, and people can go back to their usual activities or work immediately. The treatments can help most musculoskeletal problems such as low back pain, neck pain, knee pain, shoulder pain, whiplash, sciatica, tendinitis, sprain, strains, torn ligaments and cartilage damage. Located in Miami, Florida, The Center for Regenerative Medicine includes a team of professionals that are dedicated to improve your quality of life, paving the way to enhance the science of non-surgical orthopedic medicine. World champions, sports legends, professional and amateur athletes, dancers, and people with just plain pain and arthritis go to The Center for Regenerative Medicine for nonsurgical orthopedic care. Using the facility to improve their condition, thousands of successful cases have been treated over the past nine years.

he says. “I’ve had a long career and I’ve sacrificed my body—I’ll keep doing anything I can do now to keep moving forward, working out and playing with my kids. Play Again got me through the rough times, through my last year as a competitor. It’s a part of my daily regimen—right along with going to the gym and eating healthy. I can move, work out, compete and play with my kids. I can play again.” Nutritional science tells us that reaching optimum health and fitness levels depends not only on the work you put in to change your body, but also on the building blocks that you put into it. Baton Rouge Mardi Gras
A Louisiana tradition since French settlers formed celebratory krewes in 1830, Mardi Gras—français for “Fat Tuesday”—may be most famously feted each year in decadent New Orleans, but Baton Rouge also knows a thing or two about revelry and jubilation. According to Mark Twain, “the soul of [Mardi Gras] is the romantic, not the funny and the grotesque,” so Capital City’s festive but more traditional celebration is probably truer in spirit than the Big Easy’s famously over-the-top indulgences. The decidedly family-friendlier Baton Rouge Mardi Gras goes big with huge floats, fancy balls, abundant live music, good regional eats, and flamboyant pageantry until March 4. More than a half-dozen parades will wind through the Pelican State’s capital, boasting costumes, happy canines, fancy footwork, marching bands, and eye-popping floats, while a variety of fundraising opportunities serving local organizations will abound. Renowned for its live music, great food, street-party atmosphere, and Southern hospitality, the Blues Marathon starts and finishes this year at the exquisite Art Garden at the Mississippi Museum of Art and features the hot licks of Terry “Harmonica” Bean, Big George Brock, and Louis “Gearshifter” Youngblood. Art Deco Weekend
The colorful Art Deco aesthetic—geometric, lavish, exuberant, and modernist—rules the Miami Beach landscape, so it makes perfect sense that Magic City hosts an annual Art Deco Weekend, now in its 37th year. The famous three-day Ocean Drive event celebrates art, antiques, and architecture from the ’20s and ’30s with a generous display of films, fashion, live music, lectures, and parades, bedazzling some 300,000 browsers and serious collectors alike. This year’s event offers up two specialty happenings: The Antique Experience, held in oceanfront tents and featuring vintage furniture, lectures on the Art Deco period, and (by night) a six-piece, live dance band for the casual visitor and connoisseur; and a kids’ section filled with vintage board games, paper dolls, toy cars and planes, sandboxes, and Legos from nearly a century ago. Outdoor screenings like the Art Deco–inspired film Chicago and kiddie flicks starring Shirley Temple and The Little Rascals round out this family-friendly affair. Free; artdecoweekend.com

This year’s event, one of the largest in the country, honors the theme “Achieving Equality Through Education” with more than 300 culturally d iverse performing groups and 36 nationally acclaimed and award-winning marching bands from across the nation. Space City’s own Spirit of Houston Marching Band from the University of Houston leads the two-hour charge starting at 10 a.m. from the intersection of San Jacinto and Elgin streets along the 2-mile route in Midtown. If you, too, have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed “we hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal,” today’s your day to shine. Carve Tahoe
“I saw the angel in the marble,” said Michelangelo of one of his many indelible works, “and carved until I set him free.” Now imagine the Italian genius was working with 20-ton blocks of pure snow instead of metamorphic rock, and you’ve got a good idea of what to expect from Carve Tahoe at Northstar California resort. Gathering the very best snow carvers from around the world, this six-day event invites guests to bear witness to the shaping and carving of breathtaking, majestic iced masterpieces that will be on display until the sun melts them away. 24th Annual World Championship Hoop Dance Contest
A form of potent, traditional creative expression that combines storytelling dance with dynamic athleticism, Native American hoop dancing is truly astonishing, as dancers weave, spin, flip, and hurl between one and 50 colorful metal hoops to create such eye-popping shapes as butterflies, eagles, snakes, and coyotes. The best of the best will be on hand at the Heard Museum’s 24th Annual World Championship Hoop Dance Contest, running over two days. Last year, Derrick Suwaima Davis claimed his record sixth title, and he’ll be back to defend it this year. FROZEN FUN

Community Outreach
The Rink at Skyline Park is the perfect place to chill.
A Denver Wonderland
PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF EVAN SEMON PHOTOGRAPHY/DOWNTOWN DENVER PARTNERSHIP
A Mile High City local shares his LUV for a frosty hot spot. When I walk by the Southwest Rink at Skyline Park in Denver, I’m immediately drawn in by the great music that’s always playing, the sound of children laughing, and the sight of people of all ages and backgrounds enjoying their day together. You might see a skating party, downtown workers at lunch, students, or other members of the community out and about. (We’ve even seen the mayor take a spin on ice skates!) The rink draws a diverse crowd because of its great outdoor location, and even those who don’t want to try their luck on ice skates can enjoy the ambiance. To me, there’s nothing else in the city that’s quite like the rink. The best part of the Southwest Rink is that it’s free for everybody to enjoy. The skate rentals are usually a nominal $2, but, just like last winter, if you bring mittens, gloves,
or stocking caps for the Volunteers of America’s homeless mission, Southwest Airlines will waive the fee. Additionally, Southwest will donate 50 percent of the proceeds from broomball games played at the rink to the VOA. Last year, the VOA served 250,000 individuals in 30 programs—from 3- and 4-year-olds in our Head Start program to community members in their 90s who receive Meals on Wheels. In order to make this kind of a difference in our communities, we count on wonderful volunteers to help us achieve our mission. This year, Southwest donated funds that the VOA used for holiday and winter relief programs. And we were lucky enough to win a basketball-shooting contest that Southwest hosted, where the winning charity received a $5,000 check from the airline. That money has helped us feed thousands of people and provide hundreds of nights of
shelter for homeless women and their children. Our staff and volunteers enjoy time together at the rink and not just the scenery and skating. Knowing also that our charity is being helped makes the rink a spot that really works for us. When the Southwest Rink at Skyline Park first opened four years ago, I knew it was a place I would LUV. Thank you, Southwest Airlines and the Downtown Denver Partnership, for making a positive difference in Denver and for creating a place where our community can gather. —Jim White, Director of Public Relations and Marketing, Volunteers of America, Colorado Branch

The “If” List
Matt LeBlanc, if your life were a novel, what would its title be? You’re Never Gonna Believe This.
If you joined the circus, what would you be doing? Cotton candy guy. I love cotton candy. If you could have personally witnessed one historical event, what would it be? Moses parting the Red Sea. That must have been awesome. If, in your dreams, you could have created any one work of great art—a song, a painting, a movie, etc.— by another artist, what would it be? “Freebird,” by Lynyrd Skynyrd. That’s right, no vowels. If a picture paints a thousand words, what are you doing in that picture? Ahhhh … painting?
If you had to choose only one book for your library, what would it be? Cycle World magazine. Does that count? If you were born 100 years ago, what would you be doing? Trying to figure out how to get more than one horsepower out of this old nag. If you could take back one sentence you’ve ever spoken, what would it be? None. I have no regrets. Actually, too many to list. If we were to check in on Joey today, what would he be doing? He’d be canceled. Bummer.
This month, the Golden Globe–winning actor returns to Showtime for season three of Episodes.

What About You? If you could be any fictional character, who would you be and why? Submit your answer at spiritmag.com/if. Our favorite responses will be published in an upcoming issue of Spirit. 152 SPIRIT JANUARY 2014
