A recipient of the 2015 Hellman Fellowship—a prestigious award for young, distinctive and creative faculty—Jia plans to look next at the spread of air pollution from China to South Korea and how the rise of China affects its neighbor’s economy and environment.
Transforming Sound to Compose New Music
Lei Liang, PhD
Drawing on the rich traditions of his native China, composer Lei Liang, PhD, creates new musical forms by blending his Asian heritage with cuttingedge technologies. A composer-in-residence at UC San Diego’s Qualcomm Institute, Liang collaborates with audio software engineers and developers to produce multimedia works that are defining the sound—and look—of new music. His concerto for alto saxophone and orchestra, Xiaoxiang, was one of three finalists for the 2015 Pulitzer Prize for music.

Karl Gerth, PhD, professor of history and the Hsiu Endowed Chair in Chinese Studies at UC San Diego, is a leading expert on the interconnected and wide-ranging ramifications of this consumerism. His research highlights the dangerous consequences of unbridled growth: rampant and life-threatening harm to the environment. Looking to the Future ones within the borders of the United States. And we are building infrastructure with new tools and technology to add to our capabilities and better serve our Customers in the future. A lot has changed in our 45 years (and certainly in my 30 with the airline). In an ever-evolving world, it’s easy to see how a company could lose its way, but I’m immensely proud to say that this has not happened to us. So although January brings changes with it, there are many things that won’t change at Southwest with the flip of the calendar. We have the same
Mission and Purpose today as we did in 1971—to deliver People where they want to go, safely, ontime, with their bag, and with a smile. Sure, we might look like a different airline (and I might look a little older than when I started), but we are the same Company, with the same Heart. As we look to the future, we resolve to double down on the basics our Customers have come to expect and love—the Reliability of our operation and the Hospitality of our People— with low fares and no hidden fees. It’s a winning formula that has served us well throughout our history, and we have no plans to deviate from our flight path. An Employee recently asked me which was more important: our focus on Reliability or our focus on Hospitality? In response, I asked which was more important to him: his brain or his heart? In other words, we need to focus on both Reliability and Hospitality in order to be successful and deliver on the promise we make to you, our Customers, each and every day. There is magic in the word “and.” I hope it is reassuring to you to know that some things will never change, including our commitment to you. Happy New Year!

I find the dawn of the new year refreshing, and 2016 is no different. It’s exciting to think about the months ahead, make a list of resolutions, and set out to achieve them. For Southwest Airlines, this year marks our 45th anniversary, and we find ourselves at the dawn of a new era in many ways. Never in our history have we had so many opportunities in front of us. We have a list of 50 potential destinations where we could plant our flag throughout North, Central, and South America. We have opportunities to add new routes and increase current

Dear Southwest,
I would like to recognize pilot David Bittle. My kids had attended the Chicago Midway Airport carnival, where they both had their faces painted and received a balloon animal. On the way to the gate, David noticed my youngest crying because hers had popped. Without our knowing, he went back, had a balloon flower made, and walked 15 gates to find my daughter. I don’t think he was even the pilot for our flight! He made her day, and we can’t thank him enough. Yet another reason why we are loyal Southwest customers. My daughter, Tally, is a vaulter whose pole broke four days before her state competition. As you can imagine, without the pole she had been training with, her performance at the state meet was in question. Tally had the highest vault in the state all year, and she was devastated by the potential of her state title slipping away. Within 16 SOUTHWEST JANUARY 2016

minutes of the pole’s breaking, I got on the phone with Tally’s coach, who ordered a new one from a company in Carson City, Nevada. The pole was driven to Las Vegas, where Southwest Airlines took possession and flew it to Detroit. Instead of treating it as a simple pickup and delivery, Southwest ramp agents Mac MacIntosh and Joe Toth and freight agent Sandy Tarrant assisted me in the process of tracking the pole, and they were so friendly and professional, providing outstanding directions to the cargo facility. As I walked through the door, they called me by name, asked when the competition was, and wished us luck as we headed out. The actions of Southwest Airlines ensured that Tally was able to get a new pole before the meet, not only improving her determination but also allowing her to crush the competition. She went on to break her record. Without a doubt, it was one of my best days and an achievement that my daughter will remember for the rest of her life. —Ron Wilson MEMOR ABLE SERVICE

We reached out to Southwest and filed a lost and found report. You cannot imagine how happy I was to hear from customer service agents Michael Stillman and Connie Morvant. When Michael called and asked me to identify the contents, his voice broke as I told him the story behind the Navy SEAL Trident he was holding. Stewart and I will present Michael and Connie with an antique 48-star flag that I hope will hang in Southwest’s baggage services offices in Nashville. I hope they’ll always remember that what may seem insignificant to some is priceless to others. —Jim Rudolph HEROIC EFFORT
I want to thank customer service agent Andy Carter at Midland International Air and Space Port for saving my trip to Texas. I was flying in to go camping in Big Bend National Park, a few hours away from the airport. My bag didn’t make it with me, which could have been catastrophic. Since I was meeting friends and going camping, it had essentially my house (tent), bed (sleeping bag), kitchen— everything. Andy expedited approving reimbursements to replace some of the critical gear so that we could get things right away and not delay our drive to the park. She gave me her cell number to help coordinate getting my bag delivered, and she worked with my girlfriend when I had limited phone access. Moreover, Andy somehow got my bag delivered directly to our tent in a national park! She also moved a shift so that she would be at the airport when I was checking in for my return flight to make sure that everything went smoothly! She truly went way above and beyond, and her help really made my trip go as smoothly as it did. She earned my gratitude and certainly deserves recognition for her commitment to customer service. —Pavan Vaswani

predawn trail runs in the woods. I even did yoga, waking up stiff only to strike poses not found in studios (Scarecrow Turning Into Rocking Chair). Probing further into the dark wilderness of early morning, I eventually set my alarm to a permanent 4 a.m. I’m a stranger in an ever stranger land. Lately, though, I’ve come to admire those who see morning as a place for comfort and joy. It’s a pleasure to see more and more restaurants offering allday breakfast as if it’s a popular ethnic food. “How about doing Thai tonight?” “Nah, I’m thinking breakfast.” After all, regardless of what I do in the morning, my wife’s alarmingly bright smile tells my foggy brain: Whether you belong here or not, you’re always welcome.

For most of us, early morning is a foreign country. Though it’s a quiet place with light traffic, most of the inhabitants don’t look happy. They slump around, grunting an unintelligible dialect. Then there are the natives, those we call Morning People. These bright-eyed citizens are in the minority, but they have an alarming tendency to chirp “Good morning!” in praise of their circadian homeland. My wife is one of them. When I see her smiling face at oh dark hundred, I can’t help but take her upbeat attitude as a subtle form of criticism. Because I am definitely not a Morning Person. Over the years I have tried to join my wife in her native realm, for my own good. Early morning is the Land of Steady Habits, when we do things on autopilot— hit the snooze button, eat donuts, work out. For this reason, the right habits can turn morning into a powerful ally. For a couple years I ate a salad for breakfast every day (I hate salad). I went on

Norseman Three thousand miles and an ocean away from Norway, bartender and owner Andrew Volk of Portland Hunt & Alpine Club has managed to create a distinctly Scandinavian experience—in Maine. After ordering a plate of the gravlax, a traditional cured salmon dish, turn your attention to the cocktail menu. Hunt & Alpine offers four Old Fashioneds, but the Norseman is distinguished by the addition of aquavit, a spirit flavored with notes of caraway, anise, or dill. To balance the liquor’s herbal bite, Andrew combines it with brown butter. “It adds a body and complexity that you really can’t get elsewhere,” he says. “When we first thought of the drink, it was without the brown butter wash. It just needed a little bump to make it excellent.” Skål!

MAKE IT ↗ Combine 2 ounces brown butter–washed aquavit*, two dashes Angostura bitters, and 1 teaspoon rich simple syrup in a chilled double Old Fashioned glass. Add ice and stir. Garnish with apple slices. 30 southwest january 2016

*Slowly heat 2 tablespoons unsalted butter in a skillet until browned. Pour one 750-milliliter bottle of aquavit into a nonporous container. Once butter has cooled, strain out any solids and add to aquavit. Allow mixture to rest for 6 to 8 hours, agitating regularly. Freeze entire mixture until fats solidify. In a study conducted at the University of British Columbia, participants were given a task in either a neatly organized room or one littered with supplies. Those in the orderly space stuck with their assignment for 1,117 seconds before giving up, while those in the messy environment quit after 669. Researchers surmise that when we’re faced with messiness, self-regulation—the internal force that keeps us going in spite of frustration—plummets since we see the chaos as a threat to our own sense of control. Other than resolving to clean up, how can we combat this? Study co-author Boyoun (Grace) Chae suggests improving your mindset by building strong relationships or by honing expertise in your field. In other words, start fresh!

My brother John and I have always been creative, but we were intimidated by the world of fine art. T-shirts presented a more accessible way to sell our work. We got out on the street right away—our first investment was a hawker and peddler license. Eventually we bought an old minivan and started making cross-country road trips. Every time we came home, John and I threw a keg party at our Boston apartment. We’d put all the designs up and have our friends tell us what they liked. During one of those parties, next to a stick-figure drawing my brother had done, a girl wrote, “This guy’s got life figured out.” We saw it the following morning and really liked it. Within an hour we had come up with “Life is Good.”
OUT TAKES ALL PL AY I’d love to say that we knew we were going to have a kids’ foundation and an integrated model and all that, but we didn’t. We were just trying to avoid getting real jobs. STREET WISE Every idea we had we tested on the street. A focus group is not a real test; a real test is whether people are willing to reach in their pockets and give you cash or not. It was the one thing we had.

I’d been divorced for about two years, and it was a hectic time career wise. My company was in a transitional phase, and it demanded a lot of my time and effort, so I didn’t have time for much else.
JENNIE: I’d also been divorced about two years. Being a single mom and working full-time, it wasn’t a huge priority of mine to go out and do the legwork it took to meet someone; it felt like having another job, and I didn’t have time for that.
Favorite first date memories?
grEg: I was attracted to her right away. On the second date there was a real chemistry. Then it evolved very, very quickly. JENNIE:
When Greg and I started talking, I discovered we had similar careers. I remember the conversation was so easy and comfortable. When I shared my date feedback with my IJL matchmaker, I let her know that Greg and I had made arrangements to attend a big award dinner at his country club. The minute I walked in, I knew he was a consummate gentleman. I felt so cared for. He was attentive and made sure I was introduced to everyone.
How did IJL compare to your online dating experience?

Falling in love—and bartering for art—with the best cured pork on the planet BY KIM CROSS

here once was a time I was unmoved by bacon. If cooked for me, I would casually nibble, dabbing first at the grease with a paper towel. I did not ration and hoard it, hiding the last package under bags of frozen peas. It did not inspire daydreams, or essays, or curl my toes and make my eyes inadvertently flutter. And then it happened. I was driving down Tennessee’s Highway 411, between Chattanooga and the Great Smoky Mountains. The interstate is faster, but on this four-lane road you can admire the Appalachian foothills and sing “Country Roads” from the bottom of your belly without feeling one bit ironic. This was back before bacon was a thing. Before bacon truffles and bacon-infused bourbon and maple-bacon cupcakes. The world, then, was still blissfully free of bacon socks, bacon clocks, and

(Lord help us) bacon toothpaste. Call me a sap, but I miss that world. From the side of this road rose a cinder-block building with a sign that read BENTON’S COUNTRY HAMS. Around here, country ham is as common as the day is long. But something made me step on the brake and wheel the truck around. I like to say I followed my nose to the best bacon on the planet, but really it was more gut than nose, like porcine intervention. Inside that building I met Allan Benton, a man with hardworking hands and the kindest smile. He took me on a tour, showing me the simple, ancient ways of preserving meat. Like some Congressional library of charcuterie, rack after wooden rack of hams sat in the fragrant dark, aided and abetted by no chemical means beyond sugar, salt, and time. Allan opened the door to a smokehouse,

where billowing clouds thick enough to taste undulated from a potbelly stove no bigger than an ice chest. He bought that stove some years ago from a cousin for $50. “We’re a hillbilly operation,” he said, “through and through.” He showed me his “hillbilly Rolodex”—a cinderblock wall yellowed with smoke, covered with a collage of scribbled-on sticky notes bearing the names and numbers of some of the country’s most celebrated chefs—David Chang of Manhattan’s Momofuku Noodle Bar; John Fleer, founding chef of Blackberry Farm. The brand wasn’t yet on the lips of every foodie on both sides of the Mississippi, but it was well on its way. I left with a new friendship and armfuls of bacon, slices cut as thick as my pinkie, so smoky my hands would smell for days after handling the package. “Cook it low and slow,” Allan said. “Fiddle with it.” I took it home and fried it in a cast-iron skillet, teasing it around the sizzling pan as the white fat rendered clear. It steeped the house—and my hair, and my shirt, and my skin—with an intoxicating aroma that clung to me for days. The kind of smell you can lick. Nearly killed my dog with want. Over time, Benton’s became my currency of gratitude, a secret I share with special friends, a thank-you gift I bestow upon folks whose generosity I could never repay. I take it on airplanes, stuff it in stockings, and drive it across state lines. Once, I even bought art with this bacon. I wanted to thank a mentor who had helped me find my wings as a writer, so I sent him 7 pounds of heaven on a plate. He loved it, and that made me happy. Then he developed kidney stones. I searched for another gift. I found one: a painting by an artist whose work appears on the cover of The New Yorker Yorker. I did not know if I could afford his art, but I called anyway, explained the situation, and begged him to name a price a fledgling writer could afford. The artist pondered this. “Tell you what,” he said. “I’ll trade you for the bacon.”
MISTAKE: The water is too cold. WHY IT MATTERS: Ground coffee responds best to 200-degree heat, just below boiling. Anything lower and the coffee will be underextracted. “That means not enough of those tasty solubles will move from the grounds into the brew,” says Sarah Anderson, 2015 U.S. Brewers Cup champion. THE FIX: A digital kettle like the Cuisinart CPK-17 ($85) perfectly regulates the temperature, says Kevin Sinnott, author of The Art and Craft of Coffee. A quality automatic coffeemaker like the Bonavita 1900TS ($148) also contains a 1500watt heater that brews to 205 degrees. MISTAKE: Brewing a cup at a time. WHY IT MATTERS: Those Keurigs are cool, but you sacrifice flavor, says Sinnott. “Contact time is key—drip coffee extends the contact time, which results in a more flavorful cup.” THE FIX: A manual coffeemaker saves you cash and offers more control. The Melitta Cone is the least expensive ($3) and brews a fine cup. Sinnott recommends the stylish glass Chemex brewer ($46), recently featured in the Museum of Modern Art. MISTAKE: The ratios are out of whack. WHY IT MATTERS: Brewing coffee is chemistry. Hot water (the solvent) alters the state of the grounds (the solute) to create a solution. Chemists use scales—and you should, too. “It may be a little geeky, but it’s the most accurate and easiest way to measure coffee beans and water,” Anderson says. THE FIX: Invest in a standard kitchen scale. Shoot for a ratio of 1 part coffee to 16 parts water. “It may be a pain at first, but once you master it, you’ll never go back,” Sinnott says. MISTAKE: You’re grinding all wrong. WHY IT MATTERS: Anderson compares the brewing process to boiling angel hair pasta. “It cooks faster because it’s skinnier. The same is true of coffee—small particles give off their solubles more easily, so the more even your particle size, the better your cup of coffee will taste.” THE FIX: Go with a burr grinder. Find one that offers a wide range of grind sizes, like the Capresso Infinity Conical Burr Grinder (from $100).

A recent study in the Journal of Nutritional Science found that people who skipped breakfast lost more weight after four weeks than people who ate Frosted Flakes or porridge (both carb-heavy options, it’s worth noting). “It raises the question as to whether or not we’ve been wrong all along,” says Russell de Souza, a nutritional epidemiologist at Canada’s McMaster University. A lifetime of lessons learned from my little brother leads to the best, most hopeful breakfast we ever shared.

W
e were down at the creek one summer morning when my brother, Kenny, plucked a blue crab from the live box and hollered, “PAPER SHELL!” He twirled twice and flung the crab as hard as he could back toward the water. We watched it spin like a Frisbee with claws, pincers out wide and snapping helplessly for something familiar as it soared over grass and then mud and then the planks of our family’s pier. What my brother meant, in his own way, is that the flying crab had just started molting, meaning it was at a stage in its life when its shell was not quite hard and not quite soft, a stage when it has virtually no meat or culinary value, a stage when a crab really should be back in the water, whether under its own power or by the toss of a Tasmanian 7-year-old. The paper shell helicoptered through the air for about 40 feet, and, in a twist of bad luck that could only happen to my brother, our father
happened to be standing on the pier directly in the crab’s flight path. There’s nothing dull about the edge of a crab, so Dad needed a big towel and bandages on his forehead for weeks. But before he knew he was bleeding, he shouted a sentence I heard over and over in my childhood: ““Damn it, Kenneth Frederick!” My father’s first and middle names, by the way, are Carl Frederick. I could almost hear him processing the irony as he shouted: Here he’d gifted that middle name to his second son, and the little punk—another name he sometimes called Kenny—hit him with a rotten crab. They had the best relationship. Kenny would jump off a roof or race a go-kart into a fence post or sled down a steep hill into a tree, and Dad would tell his friends, “Yep, boy’s gonna kill himself before he’s 10.” He’s my younger brother by two and a half years, but Kenny has always known something I never could: what it’s like to not fear consequences. We were competitive brothers and still are, but beating him in anything was almost more trouble january 2016 southwest 49

than it was worth. He once got mad during a backyard baseball game and tossed a ladder at my best friend. He never lost a board game, not because he was good at them but because when things looked bleak he’d flip the board and leave the pieces scattered across the room. The boy is otherwise brilliant, though. He became salutatorian of his high school class without studying, coasted through college, and now, as a project manager for a big construction company, builds complicated things like a 27-dome mosque that just opened near Baltimore. He wrote a story about that project for Concrete International and now jokes that he’s the more accomplished writer in the family. “I co-authored this touching, emotional tale of constructing a concrete building,” he bragged on Facebook. With every outburst or fearless jump, the youngest member of our little family always seemed to teach us a basic rule of life that should’ve been obvious anyway. Take the toss of that paper-shell crab. First lesson: Always pay attention, Dad. Second: A crab’s only as good as the amount of meat in it. I think of that story when I eat crab cakes these days. I haven’t lived in Maryland since leaving
for college, and I’ve spent most of the past 18 years in North Carolina, a perfectly fine state that, believe it or not, produces more crabs than Maryland some years. Why is Maryland known as the Crab State? I can only imagine it’s because people here were so busy arguing over what kind of sauce to put on barbecue that they let Maryland scoop them on the greatest seafood marketing campaign on the East Coast. North Carolina wound up adopting the red drum as its state fish. That’s not nearly as sexy, but one of the red drum’s favorite foods is blue crab. So take that, Maryland. I live in Charlotte, a thriving city with a booming restaurant scene and dozens of fantastic chefs who can screw up a crab cake with the best of them. It usually goes like this: The waitress will say, “Our crab cakes are the best I’ve ever had,” and I won’t be able to help myself. Then the plate will come, and the crab cake will be shaped like a hockey puck. It’ll have green vegetables dotting its surface—peppers or celery or something ridiculous. Don’t get me wrong; these things are great on their own, but mixing green peppers and celery into your crab cake is like mixing college term papers in with the Pulitzer pile. The reason folks down here

” add all that filling, of course, is that crab meat is expensive. Crab harvest totals have plummeted in recent years. There are dozens of theories as to why, but let’s just pick the one that’ll be popular in any state: It’s the government’s fault. Regional and state fishery commissions have set strict regulations to protect the red drum. In the past 15 years, the population has more than doubled. Good for the red drum. But here’s the thing: the more red drum, the smaller the crab harvest, the more expensive the crab meat, the more green peppers and celery I seem to find in my crab cakes. The circle of life. The worst crab cake I ever ate was a deep-fried mess at a restaurant on the North Carolina coast. This is a state that will deep-fry Oreos and ice cream at the state fair, and I get how that can be funny, but deep-frying a crab cake is sick humor I’ll never understand. All of those bad crab cake memories do one thing, however— they make the good ones better. I can’t remember the first crab cake I ever ate, but I will never forget the best one.

But nothing can exist without something existing before it, and today’s breakfast was born in fields and rivers and chicken coops yesterday. The best breakfast I ever had was born after a love connection between “doublers,” a term I learned before I ever sat through a sex ed class. When we were very young, Dad would take us down to a cottage on a creek in St. Mary’s County, Maryland, near where

the Patuxent River meets the Chesapeake Bay. The cottage sat on a hill and had been in the family for years. My father’s younger brother, George, lived there with his wife and daughter. On those mornings Dad would yank life jackets over our heads and plop us on the bench seats of a green johnboat, and we’d ride around snatching crabs from any pole we could find—pilings for navigational signs, pillars of other people’s
piers. Back then, Maryland waters were well stocked, so nobody minded if you took a few from their poles. Sometimes the owner would see us and wave, knowing the next crab would soon latch on. We only kept very big crabs; the size limit is 5 inches from one tip of the shell to the other. We wouldn’t dare keep a female crab. You can take crabs from the water, we believed, but you better leave some for tomorrow. (If you don’t know the difference between male and female crabs, here’s how I was taught, word for word: Look at the apron. If it looks like the Washington Monument, it’s a male; if it looks like the Capitol Building, it’s a female.) On some poles, we’d come across a male cradling a female— they do this to protect the females as they molt—and either Kenny or I would say, “Oh, doublers,” and we’d scoop both in the act and throw the female back. Of all the things a Maryland childhood gave me, an understanding of crabs has proven to be one of the most useful. Ask any of my exes, and they’ll say that my crab knowledge was one of the reasons they fell in love with me. Crabs are mean-looking, with their raised claws and snapping pincers, but you can neutralize one by grabbing it where its back fin meets the hard shell. You can hold it for hours like this without being pinched. If you’re a young man showing a young woman this trick, in my experience it’s worth three or four extra dates. Then there’s the feast: Understanding how to open a crab is impressive to a woman from, say, the Midwest—and although I wound up divorced from a woman from, say, the Midwest, even she’ll admit that she’s a better person for learning how to unlock the sweet chunks of delicate meat. They are beautiful creatures. In fact, in 1976 William Warner wrote Beautiful Swimmers, a book

about crabs and the people who catch them, and it won the Pulitzer Prize. Back fins always paddling, front claws always at the ready, crabs are constantly in search of a comfortable spot in the mud. They exist in waters that are both salty and fresh. Early in life they subsist as larvae near the ocean, a salty place, migrating toward cleaner waters as they mature. Two places that offer the best homes are Chesapeake Bay and the rich sounds of eastern North Carolina—large aquatic bodies where saltwater is constantly driving in from the Atlantic Ocean and meeting the freshwater from rivers. Density directs traffic in these estuaries, freshwater on top and saltwater on bottom. In the Chesapeake, the majority of the freshwater flows down from New York and Pennsylvania, riding the Susquehanna, one of the oldest rivers in the world. The river was here before the bay, and its ancient path forms the “channel” of the Chesapeake, a 100-foot-deep section that runs through the middle of the bay and allows for larger ships to cruise to the Port of Baltimore. We got stuck in that channel once when Dad’s charter boat died. A broken boat is a problem anytime, but it was a bigger problem that day because we looked up and saw the bow of the Queen Elizabeth 2 pointed directly at us. Nine-hundred-sixty-three feet long, 171 feet high. I learned then that boat captains actually do use the word “Mayday!” Eventually someone aboard the big ship answered Dad’s call on the radio and adjusted the autopilot setting to veer around us. An hour or so later, a pilot boat came out to tow us home. With nothing better to do, we cast a couple of lines off the back of Dad’s dead boat during the ride. Kenny snagged a bluefish. “You lucky little punk,” my father said to him.

hen he was very young, Kenny had a speech impediment. He couldn’t finish his Rs or flap an L to save his life. “Paper shell!” was actually “Paypaw Shehw!” He received years of speech therapy for that. When his words finally cleared up, his adult teeth started coming in with an overbite. Then he was diagnosed with 20/100 vision and made to wear a pair of thick glasses. Toss in Brillo Pad
hair. The boy’s middle school days were brutal. He started high school the year I was a senior. I remember walking through the halls one day with my friends and passing him without saying “hi.” Almost 20 years later, I still wake up in the night regretting that. I have no doubt he’s forgotten it. Just before that school year, George, the uncle who lived in the cottage, died. George had a

learning disability and couldn’t read or write. But one time he ate dog food to try to convince us kids to eat our dinner, so he knew a trick or two. George was in his 50s when he went. He and my dad had gone through a few stretches where they didn’t talk for one reason or another. At George’s funeral though, Kenny and I approached the casket together, and my father came up behind us, grabbed our shoulders, and said,
“Remember, there’s nothing like having a brother.” A year later, I went off to college. Kenny got contact lenses, the braces came off, and a barber cut his hair tight. By his senior year he was a popular kid, the star of the high school baseball team that made the state semifinals. In his high school yearbook, he won best smile. At his graduation ceremony, in front of a few thousand people at a giant equestrian
center in southern Maryland, he delivered a fine speech about fresh starts. I remember we sat in the front row, my mother and father and I. My brother had so many academic medals around his neck he sounded like the ghost of Jacob Marley as he walked up to the lectern, jingling and jangling. Then he looked out over the crowd and delivered a very Kenny opening line. It’s 17 words, equal parts history and pop culture and humor and metaphor, capped with his unmistakable, matter-of-fact style. “Yogi Berra once said, ‘It ain’t over ’til it’s over,” he started. “Well, it’s over. We’re done with childhood.”

riday, april 5, 2013, 8 a.m.: the best breakfast I ever ate. I’d pulled into Baltimore the night before, on the eve of the Orioles’ home opener. Kenny had scored a pair of tickets from a friend who works field maintenance at Camden Yards. I’d just accepted a new job. My divorce had gone final the previous fall. My father had a bad run of strokes the year before that, forever altering our roles as sons and father. Kenny and I don’t talk every day, or every week for that matter, but we are two of the lucky siblings who grow up and become friends as adults. We take vacations together every year and spend much of that time trying to find good food and water. We’re still very different: He punched a hole in a wall in a fit of frustration over my dad’s decline; I simply mowed my lawn in silence, over and over and over. can never be too safe, and I made change for a buck and shoved some quarters into a newspaper box for the Opening Day edition of The Baltimore Sun. The Sip & Bite was packed that morning with everyone from construction workers to police officers to people in suits. We sat at a table in the corner and looked at a menu that boldly claimed, “Best Crab Cakes in Baltimore.” The third item, highlighted in orange, was the “Eastern Shore,” a crab cake topped with bacon and an egg, served on a bun with a side of home fries. We ordered two Eastern Shores and two Natty Bohs. As the waitress walked away, we looked around the restaurant at people eating omelets and biscuits and drinking orange juice. “I guess everybody else thinks it’s too early for crab cakes,” I said. “I don’t understand that,” my brother said. “It’s the best thing on the menu. Why wouldn’t you get the best thing on the menu?” We clinked the necks of the Natty Bohs together and toasted to Opening Day. Our plates arrived. People sitting around us looked at them. These were crab cakes—real crab cakes, as the tides intended— huge lumps of meat, held together only by small squares of bread, eggs, mayonnaise, and the common sense that a crab cake is only worth the amount of crab meat in it. A guy sat down at the table next to us and told the waitress he’d have what we were having. It spread like that. A dozen or so nurses showed up after the overnight shift, and they all ordered beers, too. By the time we left, nearly everyone at the diner was drinking with us and toasting to Opening Day, all filled up on crab meat and hope. Michael Graff is the executive editor of Charlotte magazine. 2. WET, LATHER, SCRUB. RINSE, DRY, REPEAT. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, washing your hands with good ol’ soap and water is one of the best ways to avoid spreading germs and keep from getting sick. If soap and water are unavailable, Cleveland says it’s helpful to carry a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60 percent alcohol.
Infusing water with fresh fruit or herbs is an easy way to increase your intake.
3. DRINK MORE WATER. H2O is essential for numerous bodily functions, from flushing out toxins to digestion. Drink up before you start feeling parched, Cleveland recommends. Bonus: “Replace sodas and juice with clean, pure water, and you could lose several pounds this year.”

January marks a very exciting milestone for us: our 10th anniversary in Denver. What makes this city a real Southwest Airlines standout is that it is now our fourth-busiest airport in terms of daily departures, as well as the fastest-growing operation in our history. We also carry more people to and from Denver than any other airline*. Now that’s a fact to take pride in! We certainly didn’t accomplish this without a lot of support from the amazing Mile High community, which has put its trust in our airline for the past 10 years. Thanks to them, we’ve grown from 13 flights a day serving three cities to nearly 180 flights a day serving almost 60 domestic destinations. We’ve even added service to the Mexican locales of Cancún, Cabo San Lucas/Los Cabos, and Puerto Vallarta, all in the past year. With help from our Employees, we wanted to find a meaningful way to help make the communities we serve not just great places to visit but also great places to live. In this search, we discovered the nonprofit Project for Public Spaces and learned about placemaking—a pioneering approach that helps citizens transform public spaces into vital places that highlight local assets, spur rejuvenation, and serve common needs. Placemaking spoke to the heart of who we are at Southwest, so we teamed up with Project for Public Spaces in 2013 for three pilot projects and then created
the Heart of the Community Program in April 2014, committing ourselves to three more years of support. Since then, Southwest has awarded grants to 13 communities. From building a “beach” in downtown Detroit to kick-starting programming and activities in an underutilized plaza in Albuquerque, New Mexico, these projects engage residents and honor their vision. The program’s primary goals are to help communities across the country bring new life to their public spaces; raise mainstream awareness of placemaking as a catalyst for building sustainable, healthy, inclusive, and economically viable communities; and encourage community participation that benefits public spaces.
Our efforts are paying off: Heart of the Community was recently highlighted in the 2015 United States Conference of Mayors Business Council Best Practice Report: Mayors and Businesses Driving Economic Growth. And by investing in placemaking and engaging our Employees in related volunteer efforts, Southwest is making a bold statement about the vital role people and public spaces play in our communities. We will soon be announcing a new roster of grant recipients, which were selected from hundreds of applications submitted by dedicated community advocates. The resulting projects will help us continue to demonstrate the power of placemaking and the importance of connecting People to what’s important in their lives. Mexican laws establish among others the following penalties and sanctions related to the importation of goods into the country: • Omission to declare whether coming in or out of the Mexico´s customs amounts of cash, in domestic or foreign checks, payment orders or any other documents receivable in an aggregate amount exceeding the equivalent of 10,000 US dollars or its equivalent in domestic or foreign currency, which action will be punishable with a fine of 20 to 40% of the exceeding amount and the corresponding criminal penalties will be applied. • Introduction into or extraction of goods from Mexico, using deceitful methods to hide items, when their imports or exports is prohibited, restricted or because foreign trade duties must be paid, will be punishable with fines ranging, to 70 or 100%, of the commercial value of merchandise. • Omission of the total or partial payment of foreign trade duties. When failure consist of only a duty omission and the goods do not exceed 3,000 US dollars or its equivalent In domestic or foreign currency, the penalty will consist of up to 116% of the commercial value of the items. Connecting to an International Flight • Go directly to the Southwest departure gate.
• Checked bags will be transferred automatically.
• You should not have to leave the secure part of the airport.
Connecting from an International Flight • Depending on point of departure, Customers may have to clear U.S. Immigration before collecting checked baggage from the baggage carousel. • You will then proceed through customs to clear checked and carryon baggage. • Customers traveling from some countries go through the customs process before returning to the United States.
• If you have checked baggage, proceed to the Southwest recheck desk or ticket counter to check your bags for the final portion of your trip. • Customers traveling internationally into the United States with a connecting flight may carry liquids in carryon baggage, provided they were purchased in duty-free shops and placed in secure, tamper-evident bags.
• Proceed to your departure gate. If you do not have a boarding pass for your connecting flight, you must obtain one at the ticket counter or at kiosks near the Southwest recheck desk before proceeding to your gate.
