The U.S. airline industry plays a vital role in the overall health of our nation’s economy; it’s hard to identify a single sector that does not benefit— either directly or indirectly—from strong and healthy airlines. In fact, our industry creates more than $1 trillion a year in economic activity; drives nearly 10 million American jobs; and accounts for 5 percent of the U.S. gross domestic product.

Southwest Airlines and our wholly owned subsidiary, AirTran Airways, are proud members of Airlines for America (A4A), a trade

organization that advocates for the airline industry as a model for Safety, Customer Service, and environmental responsibility. A4A recently launched a campaign to highlight the integral role our industry plays in our nation’s economy and the need for a National Airline Policy. This past December, I was honored to be named chairman of A4A’s board of directors, and I look forward to the opportunity to work with my industry peers to serve our Customers, our Employees, and our communities.

Customer Service in Action I recently received a commendation from a couple who was preparing to travel with their autistic child. Nervous about the trip, they contacted one of our Managers at Chicago Midway to see if they could get a dry run of the security checkpoint so they would know what to expect. Our Employee not only agreed, but took it a step further—she offered the family a rehearsal of the entire travel experience, from checkin to boarding. As you can imagine, the couple was very grateful, and it helped make for a very smooth experience on the day of their flight.

So why is this important to you?

A National Airline Policy would strive to keep airline tickets affordable and enhance the overall travel experience. How? As a start, by modernizing the air traffic control system—which would serve to reduce flight times and cut congestion, cancellations, and flight delays. That would help grow our local economies through expanded travel, trade, tourism, and the creation of new jobs.

You might be surprised to learn that taxes and fees amount to about 20 percent of a typical $300 roundtrip domestic ticket. That’s higher than taxes on products like alcohol, tobacco, and firearms—so-called “sin taxes” that are designed to discourage use. We’re working hard to keep flying affordable, and punitive taxes get in the way of that effort. Revising the federal tax structure on air travel is just one of the many ways that a National Airline Policy would allow airlines like Southwest and AirTran to better serve our Customers.

This year, A4A hopes to introduce legislation to Congress that will support a National Airline Policy.

The skills Vanessa has learned at Southwest have helped her create awareness for Rett syndrome as the regional representative for the International Rett Syndrome Foundation.

Do you ever watch characters on TV shows like CSI: Crime Scene Investigation or Law & Order and wonder how their real-life counterparts solve cases based on information from computers and electronic devices?

Loyal Southwest Customer Tami Loehrs, a computer forensics expert and president of Loehrs & Associates, is a real-life pro working in this field.

Tami grew up loving computers, but she aspired to become a lawyer. She began working as a receptionist at a law firm and started to find a niche that combined technology with her passion for the legal profession.

“With my natural technology abilities and growing legal experience, I realized I spoke both of these languages.

Most others who spoke only law or only technology were always bumping heads,” says Tami.

In 1999, Tami founded Law2000, Inc., which provided IT solutions for the legal industry and computerized litigation services. Computer forensics were new at the time, but demand quickly grew—after six months, Tami was called to testify and provide computer forensic evidence in a court case. Tami is now well-respected across North America for her expertise.

AREA CODES

Not to put too fine a point on it, but history is about place.

My friend Doug Humes knows there isn’t a boring square inch in America. Even though he’s not a professional historian or storyteller, Doug can dig up the secrets of a place faster than anybody I know. I grew up with him in the Philadelphia suburbs, a place I believed to be the epicenter of boredom—until Doug started telling me stories about spies and smugglers and American Indians and many other true tales of the place.

Over the past several years, Doug and his wife, Barbara, have taken this skill on the road in their perennial explorations of America.

You can see just a few of the stories he’s uncovered along the way on page 66. I wish we had room for more, such as the one about the stone upon which Joan of Arc prayed, now housed in Milwaukee, on the campus of Marquette University. Or Theresa’s Stockbridge Café in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, better known as Alice’s Restaurant. That Alice’s Restaurant.

When Doug and Barb visited my town of Orange, New Hampshire (population 331), I pointed to the summit of Cardigan Mountain, still bald from a fire that farmers set to burn wolves away in 1850. Deep in the woods, I showed them 200-year-old apple trees grown for hard cider that got shipped by train to Boston. We hiked to places where the local Abenaki Indians thrived. We passed one of the mines where workers once dug up clear sheets of mica for use as boiler windows. The couple stayed in my house, built in 1810 by a celibate Shaker community. I could tell a whole story of America just in this one little town.

But I’ll leave that to Doug. He’s the kind of guy stories just sort of cling to. Which makes him the finest explorer I know.

I enjoyed reading “Spirit’s Guide to Spirits” in the December issue. That is, until I noticed that craft distilleries in the Midwest didn’t receive a callout. Much appreciation for the mention of Koval Distillery, but I invite you to visit others in the Chicago area, like North Shore Distillery, located just north of the city. The owners are a married couple who affectionately named their still Ethel. There is also FEW Spirits, named after prohibitionist Frances Elizabeth Willard. I could go on and on, but you get the idea.

In addition to the distillers, there are the local bartenders who proudly concoct potions using only the finest local spirits.

This holiday season my husband was transferred for his job. “In Colorado we have four very distinct seasons.

I source as much as I can from the state, so the menu changes all the time—not only to reflect that, but also to reflect what’s available from the small ranchers and growers I rely on. We can get beets and goat cheese almost year-round. I coat the cheese in fines herbes— a traditional French blend of chervil, chives, parsley, and tarragon—so they’re covered in green. We serve beets and goat cheese together in plated dishes at the restaurant, so it was a natural progression to turn them into more of an entertaining appetizer. If you feel like the skewers need a little moisture, just drizzle them with your favorite vinaigrette.”

12 baby beets 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 pinch salt and pepper 1 pound fresh goat cheese ¼ cup each chopped chervil, chives, parsley, and tarragon

1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. In a roasting pan, toss beets (skin on) in olive oil, then season with salt and pepper. Cover with foil and roast until tender, about 20 to 30 minutes. When cool enough to handle, peel beets by rubbing them with a paper towel, then cut in half.

2. Mix herbs together on a

plate. Roll cheese into bitesized balls, then roll in herbs.

Skewer one beet and one cheese ball on each toothpick.

“I like to experiment. A lot of times, I start by thinking about classic recipes. Egg whites used to be huge. You had the pisco sour, as well as an entire series of cocktails called flips. I actually had a manhattan in mind when I started this drink. Instead of sweet vermouth, I paired bourbon with St-Germain, which has floral notes and a hint of sweetness.

champagne and gin because of its botanicals, but I wanted to see what else it paired well with.

Simply put, one of the secrets to a successful book is girl power—at least that’s what e-book analytics company Hiptype reports. The startup provides data on everything from what income bracket readers fall into to the pace at which they progress through their reads.

Did you know that women are 50 percent more likely to finish a book than men? (For the record, that’s Ladies 2, Gents 0.) Jeremy Greenfield of F+W Media’s Digital Book World thinks such information will help publishers get closer to their customers than ever before. “But,” he says, “I don’t think we’re headed toward a future where books are written by formula.” Sorry, ladies.

Those nonessential but ohso-tempting items that taunt us at checkout account for approximately 1 percent of total supermarket sales, according to consulting firm Dechert-Hampe. In fact, the Food Marketing Institute reports that purchases not on our shopping list make up more than 50 percent of what we buy. “You should keep your money in a bank and not on your pantry shelves,” says Paco Underhill, author of Why We Buy: The Science of Shopping. Underhill offers a few pointers for sticking to your list and your budget: “If it’s on sale, it doesn’t mean that you need it. If it’s on the endcap, it doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s on sale. And finally, if it’s at eye level, somebody has paid to put it there.” In short, don’t let your eyes get bigger than your wallet.

Lunchtime will never be the same thanks to designer Jil Sander. During her namesake label’s fall 2012 menswear show, the German fashion icon trotted out one dapper look after another, but it was the accessories that took center stage. A handful of models appeared to be brown-bagging it. But what looked like a sack lunch was actually one of Sander’s latest handbags. The Vasari Bag, as it is called, is rendered from coated paper and features visible stitched seams.

The words “Jil Sander” are printed in small black type near the bottom. After all, not even a designer bag that calls to mind something you’d find in a grade-school cafeteria is complete without a logo. It also comes in black, and both colors sold out upon hitting stores—despite the fact that a PB&J was not included.

Dog Talk Canine communication troubles? Find out what’s being lost in translation with this simple test from expert Brian Hare.

Instructions

1 . Tell your dog to sit and stay.

2. Stand about three feet away, and put a treat down on either side of you.

3. Point to the treat on your left.

4. Record which treat your dog eats. If your dog eats the treat you pointed at, give him one point.

5. Repeat 10 times, alternating which side you point to.

Results

7-10 points “You probably don’t notice when your dog responds to your pointing gestures in all sorts of situations,” says Hare.

“But this skill is remarkable. Your dog’s skills are similar to those of a human infant. At around nine months, babies start to build core communication skills: They begin paying attention to what people are trying to communicate when they point. Similarly, your dog relies on your gestures to solve problems he probably couldn’t solve alone.”

4- 6 points “Dogs are one of the only animals that rely on human gestures, but even among dogs there is variation. Some dogs are more like infants and rely heavily on physical signals, while others are more like chimpanzees and try to solve problems on their own. Your dog uses a mixed strategy.

When chimps perform a similar test to this one, they tend to use self-reliant strategies rather than relying on human gestures. This does not mean your dog is not communicative. He may just be more responsive to other signals, like your voice.”

“Your dog’s score is not so much a gauge of his intelligence but rather a way for you to learn how to better communicate with him.

If he relies heavily on hand signals, you’ll know that this is a great way to interact with him. If he uses a more self-reliant strategy, it might explain why he doesn’t pay attention to you when you point. Either way, he can still score high in his aptitude for cuddling.”

othing strikes you as out of the ordinary when you first see 13-year-old Taylor Cottrell paddling her surfboard 10 yards from the shoreline of Central California’s Avila Beach. On her face is the same elated smile all kids wear—especially as she pops to her feet and lets a wave carry her for a precious few seconds. A look of happy exhaustion replaces her ecstatic grin as she dives into the shallows and emerges from the water, her blond hair matted with salt water and clinging to her wet suit. ¶ Something that might also go unnoticed is Taylor’s mother, Laurina, nervously looking on. Just a couple of months ago, Taylor was in a hospital, attached to an IV drip, feeling as if she had nothing to live for. A rare primary immune deficiency disorder, which renders the body’s natural killer cells unable to effectively fight infection, has, for most of Taylor’s life, left her in fear of handshakes, communal places, and unsanitized objects—any opportunity or setting in which germs might spread. For Taylor, a common cold could transmute into coughing fits, vomiting, and a fever of 106. She attended middle school in a wheelchair until the viruses she was picking up became so persistent that her doctors encouraged her family to pull her out. Barely a teenager, she was confined to her bed and unable to socialize with friends, contact with whom was deemed potentially life-threatening.

But a remarkable thing happened when Taylor waded into the Pacific. Her mother believes the ocean—and surfing, specifically—is giving her daughter a new lease on life. On an idyllic beach day in August, the man she credits with this amazing turnaround is standing chest-deep in

the surf, waiting for Taylor to paddle back out to him.

Van Curaza, an impossibly tanned 50-year-old former pro surfer raised here in San Luis Obispo, started the nonprofit Amazing Surf Adventures to cater to people just like Taylor; people for whom disease or fate has meant they can’t lead a normal life, but who Van is convinced surfing can help rehabilitate.

It started in 2008 with Operation Surf, a program he developed to offer unique therapy to soldiers injured in war. But Van didn’t stop there. For the general population of military veterans, he launched a program called “Koa Kai” (which means sea warrior in Hawaiian). “Shaka” (a common greeting in surf culture which involves extending the thumb and little finger of one hand) is geared to physically or cognitively challenged civilians like Taylor. “Stoked” helps at-risk youth and people with addictions. And “Kai Keki” (translation: child of the sea) is for kids ages 5 to 8.

Most of Van’s clients are referred to him by other nonprofits: the national mentoring organization Big Brothers Big Sisters; San Luis Obispo County’s Sober Community School; the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs; various 12-step programs; and Operation Comfort, the charity affiliated with Texas’ Brooke Army Medical Center that first recruited Van to work with wounded soldiers. Van knew surfing could help in the healing process because it had helped him with his own.

The rise and fall—and rise again—of Van Curaza is as heartrending as it is inspiring. He was abandoned by his mother at age 2 and raised by his dad. He was not a book-smart kid, nor the enthusiastic ballplayer his father wanted him to

be, and the criticism hurt. “I never had anyone around me saying I was good at anything,” he says, sitting in a San Luis Obispo coffee shop a couple of days before Taylor’s assault on the surf at Avila Beach. He spent most of his childhood, he says, feeling alone and scared. Then, at the age of 10, he discovered surfing. Although his dad wasn’t fully supportive, and they lived 10 miles from the water, the young boy would hitchhike or catch rides from older friends.

Sharing a board and a wet suit with a buddy, he took turns paddling out to the breaks. Surfing, Van says, made him feel like he was “somebody.”

He entered his first competition, the Katin Team Challenge in Southern California, when he was 17, but didn’t make it out of his heat. Still, it was an experience he’ll never forget. After that, he surfed whenever possible—usually, every day—but chose to eschew competitions in favor of seeking out bigger and bigger waves to ride.

In 1995, at age 32, Van was the first person to “tow in”—to be hauled in by Jet Ski—to Mouse Rock, a 20-foot wave that forms in coastal Cayucos, California. A photograph of that moment— Van, dwarfed by a blue wall of water—now hangs in the nearby Firestone Grill.

an’s prowess as a big wave surfer led to sponsorship deals with brands like Billabong, O’Neill, Body Glove, and Quiksilver. But as he was on the up as a surfer, he was being pulled under by a dark and powerful current. As he puts it: “You get caught up in this rock-star lifestyle that has the drinking and the drugs involved … and before you know it I was asking myself, How did I get here?”

Van’s descent into addiction began with a cigarette and moved from nicotine to alcohol, marijuana, cocaine, prescription pills, and methamphetamine, a spiral that took him all the way to rock bottom.

His “awakening” from this haze of substance abuse came in a hallway outside of courtroom D5 in San Luis Obispo Superior Court, where he faced drug possession charges. The date was December 16, 2002, and he hasn’t had a drink or taken drugs since. Through court-ordered Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous 12-step programs, Van came to understand what a positive force surfing was in his life. Surfing bolstered his confidence, and that increase in selfesteem enabled him to face his darkest fears.

“I thought, If I keep doing [the drugs and alcohol], I won’t be able to surf anymore. That made me reconsider my choices and decisions.”

The Little Sub That Could

North Charleston, South Carolina

A Welcome Center for New Americans

Valley Cottage, New York War and Peace author Leo Tolstoy’s youngest daughter, Alexandra, fled Russia in 1929, eventually settling in this small town, where she was the center of a Russian expatriate community for 40 years. In 1939, she created a resettlement center that eventually aided more than 30,000 Russian refugees.

Her house is now the site of the Tolstoy Foundation, home to a three-room bedand-breakfast and a library boasting 50,000 books. Also on the property: St. Sergius Church, its vibrant interior covered with paintings of Russian Orthodox icons.

Lt. George Dixon of the Confederate Navy had his lucky coin in his pocket—the one that had stopped a bullet at the Battle of Shiloh—when his eight-man, hand-cranked submarine, the Hunley, approached a Union ship, the USS Housatonic, in Charleston Harbor on February 17, 1864. The Housatonic’s cannons couldn’t aim that low—sailors were reduced to firing bullets, and minutes later the Hunley’s sole torpedo slammed into the ship’s stern. It was the first time in history that a submarine sank an enemy ship.

But the explosion crippled both attacker and target, and the Hunley descended to the sea floor, where it stayed until the year 2000. Now you can tour it, in its 90,000-gallon conservation tank. Lt. A Presidential Sanctuary HYDE PARK, NEW YORK

RANKLIN DELANO ROOSEVELT served longer than any other president, seeing America through the Great Depression and World War II. In his hometown of Hyde Park, you can get to know the president who doesn’t occupy the history books. Tour his childhood home, Springwood; Val-Kill, his wife Eleanor’s personal retreat and a place of escape from her domineering mother-in-law; and Top Cottage, Roosevelt’s own hideaway.

Throughout his presidency, FDR came to the Hudson River town whenever he could, often attending services at St. James Episcopal Church, the place of worship his family had belonged to for generations. It was an open

secret that Roosevelt had been paralyzed by polio. When he went out in public, he swung his legs from his hips to give the illusion of walking, while canes and an aide supported him. One parishioner, now in his mid-70s, still recalls him entering the church on Sundays.

“He made a heck of a racket,” recounts the man. “He wore metal braces on his legs, and they clanked together when he walked down the aisle.” For those of us who love history, moments like these are treasures: ordinary impressions that disappear too soon. An Outlaw’s Roadblock NORTHFIELD, MINNESOTA

ESSE JAMES AND his James-Younger Gang picked the wrong town to rob.

The gang, made up of former Confederate guerrillas, had been robbing banks and trains, mostly in the South. But in 1876 they decided to head north, to Northfield, Minnesota. On the afternoon of September 7, the eight men split up. Three entered the First National Bank of Northfield, and the rest rode around firing bullets to scare off the locals.

It didn’t work. Residents lifted guns from hardware stores and fired back, killing two gang members and wounding two more.

The remaining ruffians managed to escape, but word of the bungled robbery had spread.

A posse formed, chasing the gang for 400 miles. Only Jesse James and his brother, Frank, escaped.

The James brothers continued their life of crime until 1882, when Jesse was killed by bounty hunters and Frank turned himself in for a long roster of crimes on the condition that he wouldn’t be extradited to Northfield. He’d seen enough of the place.

The bank now houses a museum that traces the events of that fateful day. We may think Westerns exaggerate things, but this is one place where history can’t be overacted. Northfield Historical Society: 408 Division St. S, northfieldhistory.org

Home for the Homesick New York City

Early on a winter day in 1963, Greenwich Village looked drab. All the leaves were brown, and the skies were gray. A 28-year-old folksinger named John Phillips woke up beside his wife, Michelle, in the Earle Hotel with a song in his head. Phillips missed his home on the West Coast. He sang the song while Michelle scribbled down the lyrics. They called it “California Dreamin’” and later recorded it in Los Angeles with the Journeymen. The group changed its name to The Mamas & The Papas and re-recorded the tune, which became one of Rolling Stone’s greatest songs of all time. The Railroad Ties That Bind Council Bluffs, Iowa

A Traitor’s Table

Albuquerque, New Mexico In the summer of 1945, a machinist named David Greenglass rented a room in a house in the center of town.

One day that June, a stranger who claimed he was sent by “Julius” appeared at Greenglass’ door with a torn piece of a Jell-O box. It was a signal: Greenglass had been told that a messenger would be carrying it. He sat down at the table in his room to draw sketches of what he had observed at Los Alamos, the secret laboratory where the atomic bomb had been invented. The stranger, a Soviet courier named Harry Gold, paid $500 for them.

A monument marks the spot on Cemetery Hill where, in 1859, Abraham Lincoln—a year before being elected president—met with an engineer named Grenville M. Dodge. The duo looked west from what they agreed should be the eastern terminus of the Transcontinental Railroad. Dodge went on to plan the route and oversee construction of the Union Pacific Railroad—more than 1,000 miles of track that met the Central Pacific line in Promontory, Utah. The Victorian home where Dodge lived in Council Bluffs preserves the memory of the man and his accomplishments. Down the hill, the old Carnegie Library now houses the Union Pacific Railroad Museum, where you can eye furniture that once decorated Lincoln’s own railcar. Van’s embrace of the power of surfing led directly to his creating Amazing Surf Adventures: If it was so cathartic a force in his own life, surely it could be impactful in the lives of others. But while Van was a natural in the water, organization and paperwork were not his strong suits. That’s when he met Amanda Kline.

he first day Amanda rode a surfboard, everything seemed to go quiet.

“It’s so loud, really, with the ocean and all the people, but when you’re surfing it’s like the only person there is you,” she says. “I rode that first wave all the way in, and the only thing I was thinking about was the pure joy of it.”

Like Van, Amanda had a troubled upbringing. Born two and a half hours northeast of San Luis Obispo, in Fresno, California, she was 3 when her mother divorced her father and moved Amanda and her brother to the coast.

Drinking, drugs, and domestic violence crept into the household, and, at 16, Amanda had had enough. She joined a community program for kids struggling at home, graduated from high school, and began to claw her life back.

“Growing up, there was all this guilt,” the 24-year-old says, sitting next to Van at the coffee shop, “but in the ocean, I was comfortable.

I was supposed to be there. I was safe. Nobody could touch me.”

Three years ago, when she met Van through mutual friends and learned about the work he was doing at Amazing Surf Adventures, joining him became a nobrainer. After giving their “blood, sweat, and tears” to the organization, the couple fell in love and are planning to marry in Hawaii later this year. “Van’s honest, hardworking, and driven,” she says adoringly. “He has a big heart.”

Having struggled with her own addiction problems as a teen, Amanda is particularly passionate about helping at-risk youth.

“We take gang members and kids with addictions out of their everyday lives, put them in wet suits, and the ocean suddenly becomes the boss,” she says. “The emotions they’re battling and the way they’ve behaved in order to survive or be respected—it all disappears when they’re in the water.”

Amanda thinks that if she’d discovered surfing when she was at her lowest ebb, it would have helped to ease her pain. Taylor Cottrell was looking for the same relief. She was tired of being sick; of the headaches; of the fevers.

She missed her school friends; she missed being a child.

What is it about surfing that is so powerful? Van says learning to surf is the process through which he can destroy people’s perceived self-limitations.

“I’d given up on everything,” she says, sitting on a bench at Avila Beach, the sandy hub of Amazing Surf Adventures. “If friends wanted to see me they’d have to wear a mask to enter the house. … I told Mom I had had enough because I knew I’d never be able to do anything I wanted.”

One day, while confined to her bed, Taylor watched Soul Surfer, the biopic of Bethany Hamilton, the surfer who, at age 13, lost her arm in a shark attack but beat the odds to get back on a board—and even compete—again. Inspired by the film, Taylor announced to her mother that she wanted to learn to surf. Laurina was reluctant at first, worried that such a raw physical experience would imperil her daughter. But after discussing it with her husband and Taylor’s doctor, she conceded.

Laurina called almost every surf shop in the area in search of the right instructor for her little girl— someone who would understand the fragility of her condition but not coddle her. Van Curaza’s name kept coming up.

“Any other surfing coach would have said no. A small cut could have been life-threatening to her,” Laurina says. “But not Van. He had this giant heart and he listened to Taylor’s story. So she spent one day with him and that was it. ‘The ocean is the only place I feel alive,’ she told me.”

Taylor’s doctor, Joseph A. Church, chief of the clinical immunology and allergy division at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, notes that natural killer cell deficiency is rare and difficult to diagnose, and that Taylor has an underlying genetic predisposition to infection that doctors haven’t

been able to identify. “She was sick so often,” he says, “it resulted in recurrent viral infections. It has been bad.”

But when he met with Taylor in August 2012, a few weeks

after she began surfing with Van, Church says he witnessed a marked improvement. Blood tests showed that her natural killer cells had been restored to a normal and healthy level of efficiency.

He doesn’t know why, or if it will last. “I try not to separate what goes on in the brain from what goes on in the rest of the body. I think it’s all one system,” he says.

That idyllic afternoon in August, I joined Taylor as she surfed Avila Beach’s rocky western end, with its magnificent view of the open ocean, where schools of dolphins arched and sea lions popped their heads up inquisitively. After a couple of hours, I was exhausted but Taylor didn’t want to stop. Smiling, she paddled back out toward the break, where we were joined by another of Van’s clients, grinning from the end of his surfboard as he approached.

“Buddy One Leg,” he said, extending a wet hand in my direction. Buddy Elias has Buerger’s disease, a reaction to nicotine that causes blood clots in the arteries and veins of the hands and feet. It can—and did, in Buddy’s case— result in the need for amputation.

The 41-year-old started smoking when he was 14. By the time he was 29, surgeons had to remove his left leg below the knee. Eight years later, they took the rest of it in a second surgery.

The loss didn’t stop Buddy from becoming an avid skateboarder and snowboarder. It took him only six months to figure out how to handle both sports with just one leg. He’d tried—and sworn off— surfing once, but a friend encouraged him to sign up for Van’s “Shaka” program.

Buddy told everyone who’d listen that he would take to surfing as quickly as he’d managed to hop back on his skateboard.

“By my third attempt I was so exhausted, I was sitting on the beach feeling like I was going to puke,” he remembers. “And I realized at that point that this was one of the biggest challenges I’d ever had in my life.”

or hundreds of years we’ve known the ocean gives us a general sense of well-being, and that physical exercise, like surfing, feeds the brain by getting oxygen flowing and generating new nerve cells. But there’s little actual scientific research into other healing effects of the ocean, few peerreviewed studies that could make the job of funding outfits like Amazing Surf Adventures easier.

Two years ago, Wallace “J” Nichols, a biologist and researcher at the California Academy of Sciences, started what has become an annual conference, bringing together neuroscientists and people who use the ocean for recreation in order to look seriously at its positive effects on our health.

He called it Bluemind.

Nichols says neuroscientists have studied how everything from

Buddy could skate or snowboard for six hours at a time without a break. In the water, he could barely last three. But it gave him such an adrenaline rush and sense of encouragement that he was instantly hooked. “The feeling of inertia out there, then the rumble of the wave as you paddle and feel the ocean pick up the back of the board and drop you into the wave—there isn’t anything like it,” he says. “The fear is gone.”

What is it about surfing that is so powerful? Van says learning to surf is the process through which he can destroy people’s perceived self-limitations. His clients don’t think they can do it; Van knows they can. When wounded soldiers first arrive at his camp, they act distant and won’t open up. “By the end of the week, they’re crying, hugging everyone, saying how much they love it,” Van says.

“Surfing busts down so many walls. We’ve seen it happen over and over again.”

ering was Dr. Michael Merzenich, a professor at the University of California, San Francisco.

Merzenich’s research on “brain plasticity” revealed how our brains have the ability to repair themselves. In addition, “he showed that our brains are prone to addiction,” Nichols says. “Some more than others. And if we can harness that tendency, but promote a healthy activity, it can be a force for good. We can actually become addicted to surfing.”

There has also been a fair amount of research on meditation and its effect on the brain, Nichols says. “It slows down the heart rate, slows the rate of breathing, and reduces stress.” So if sitting on your board while waiting for a wave approximates that meditative state, it can reduce stress, too.

Dr. Petr Janata, a Bluemind attendee and psychologist working in the Center for Mind and Brain at UC Davis, dove deeper into the concept of being “in the groove” as it relates to music, which he says applies equally to an activity like surfing. “When we’re interacting with an environment—whether it’s with waves or with music—we can reach a peak emotional state; everything is seamlessly integrated, and it’s a very positive emotional experience. That integration of perception and action requires the parts of the brain we call the basal ganglia, which have dopamine as an important neurotransmitter.”

Scientists have discovered that our brains produce dopamine when we’re given rewards, eliciting a feeling of enjoyment that motivates us to do certain things.

we surf or otherwise interact with the ocean includes dopamine and adrenaline, which could explain the rush surfers get when they catch a wave—otherwise known as feeling “stoked.”

Nichols says that what we’re learning about our brains makes it clear that spending time outside, in motion, or on or near water is good medicine for our minds and bodies. “This isn’t a novel idea by any means, but our ability to connect the dots on the science of this is revolutionary,” he says.

“These real-world applications to reduce stress, heal bodies, and— this isn’t an exaggeration—save lives are very exciting. Projects like Amazing Surf Adventures add to the growing mountain of evidence. In the future, will doctors be legitimately prescribing that their patients take two surf sessions and a walk on the beach?

Yes, I know they will.”

B

obby lane is a 26-yearold Iraq War veteran whom Van has taught to surf. The former Marine suffers from PTSD and traumatic brain injury after a particularly harrowing tour in the Middle East. Surfing, Bobby says, has turned his life around.

As his wife, Liz, opens the door to their modest suburban home in San Antonio, Marine Corps and American flags blow in the breeze on the front lawn. The couple met at church and married last April.

Settling into a comfy living room sofa, Bobby, a soft-spoken El Paso, Texas, native, recounts his story.

He was deployed in January 2006 to Anbar province as part of the 7th Marine Regiment jump team, tasked with protecting high-ranking officials outside the Green Zone. In the year they spent in country, Bobby’s platoon went on 200 missions, spent 300 days “outside the wire,” and, in one 11-day

period, was struck by five roadside bombs. The most catastrophic of these explosions happened with Bobby behind the wheel of a Humvee as they passed an abandoned checkpoint. At that very moment, an IED erupted, launching shrapnel that narrowly missed his face but lodged in his arm and leg.

When the platoon’s gunner went through a roll call to make sure all were OK, everyone responded except Bobby, who slumped in the footwell of the vehicle. At the hospital, Bobby refused lidocaine to numb the pain, choosing to pick the pieces of shrapnel out himself by hand.

He worked hard to cover up the trauma and finished out his deployment, but when a close friend stationed with another unit was killed by a roadside bomb it affected Bobby badly.

He eventually received a Purple Heart, but back in the States he masked his pain by drinking a case of beer or a bottle of liquor—sometimes both— every night. He couldn’t find work, and when he did he couldn’t hold down the job. He became homeless—twice.

Bobby had recurring nightmares about the small-arms engagements he survived in Iraq.

One night he’d had enough, got drunk, put on his Marine uniform, grabbed his pistol, and was about to pull the trigger when something told him to call a suicide hotline.

Bobby’s uncle, a police officer, was on duty that night and managed to talk him down. After the incident he stopped drinking and got counselling through his church, making every effort to

Surfing was something Bobby had wanted to do since he was a kid, so when another veteran recommended Van’s program he jumped at the opportunity. It was, he said, as if the ocean had been calling him. In October 2011, along with other men and women wounded in war, he traveled to San Luis Obispo with Operation Comfort for a weeklong session with Van and his team.

On his third attempt at standing up on a surfboard, Bobby glided all the way in to the beach. “And I felt everything that had gone bad in my life—everything I’d experienced while in Iraq—just fall off my shoulders,” he remembers.

“I felt weightless, like nothing else mattered.”

Even today, he describes the feeling as spiritual. “You’re sitting out there in this living body of water with its own rhythm. As you’re waiting for the next wave, you have this closeness with God. It doesn’t matter what you believe in; it’s there. I was finally able to make peace with everything.”

Amanda and Van watched Bobby’s transformation happen before their eyes. “I remember sitting outside one afternoon with Bobby, listening to him talk about the goals he wanted to set for himself when he got home,” she says.

“To see him walk out of our program and fulfill all of those goals has been an absolutely beautiful experience. All of our participants hold a special place in my heart, but I feel like Bobby is family.”

Bobby is enrolled at community college and pursuing a degree in business and recreational therapy.

erans. And while California’s a long way from Texas, he and Liz are planning regular trips to the closest thing to the Pacific they can find nearby: the Texas Gulf Coast.

Because, as he puts it, reflecting a

state of mind more than a precise destination, “It doesn’t matter how troubling things get; I’ll always have the ocean.”

hile Iman Sadeghi was finishing his undergraduate studies at Sharif University of Technology in Tehran, Iran, back in 2006, he was already dreaming of his next step: a master’s degree and, eventually, a Ph.D. in Computer Science. Only a little more than six years later, Sadeghi is enjoying a fulfilling career as a software engineer at Google Los Angeles after completing his doctorate degree at the University of California, San Diego in 2011. But Sadeghi’s current career tells only a part of his story: During his time at UC San Diego he also did two internships with Walt Disney Animation Studios, where he focused on improving techniques for rendering hair in animation. Tangled, which tells the story of the most famous longhaired character of all time, Rapunzel. Sadeghi credits his career success to his time spent in pursuit of an advanced degree.

“I was surrounded by brilliant faculty members and students; everyone I met at UC San Diego was smart, hardworking and friendly,” Sadeghi says. “I also liked the cultural diversity on campus. I participated in a lot of international gatherings and mixers and made a lot of friends from a variety of backgrounds. The weather of San Diego was also a huge plus as well. You can’t really complain about ocean-view graduate housing!”

Of course, the decision to pursue an advanced degree, whether it be a master’s or a Ph.D., isn’t always an easy one—especially given the current economic climate. The good news is that, while a master’s or doctorate degree won’t guarantee you a higher starting salary, there are several benefits you can count on: It will differentiate you from those with only an undergraduate degree; demonstrate your deep commitment to a particular area; and hone your expertise in your chosen field.

“We live in an increasingly complex society,” says Kim E. Barrett, Ph.D. and dean of graduate studies at UC San Diego. “To advance in many of the industries that are on the ascendancy in the United States, people seem to need a greater depth of understanding of their subject matter that you can really only get from a graduate education.”

Graduate school is also not as expensive as many think, particularly if you decide to pursue a doctoral degree.

Most Ph.D. students at research universities are actually supported with full tuition and cost-of-living stipends.

Although students pursuing a master’s degree are frequently self-supporting, a robust amount of evidence shows it will enhance earnings down the road.

California Miramar University, for example, has pioneered what they call a “Hybrid MBA.” Course structure allows busy professionals to attend class in person just one night a week, and the rest of the class is conducted online. The ability to complete intensive, real-world internships was a deciding factor in Iman Sadeghi’s choice to pursue his doctoral degree at UCSD, where high-profile laboratory research tells just a small part of the university’s academic story.

“All of my internships gave me the experience of working on products that will be used or seen potentially by millions of people, which is similar to my current job at Google,” says Sadeghi. “In both cases, I have to come up with novel solutions for challenging practical problems, implement my solution in complex systems and make sure that other team members will be able to maintain my work later on.”

It is important to remember, however, that the success of any education depends on how one chooses to utilize it. Once committed to the graduate school route, choose carefully based on your interests, available funding and geographic location. The latter will become even more important if you decide to pursue your doctoral degree, when a few years back in school can make you realize just how important graduate housing is when it comes with an ocean view.

In honor of February’s designation as American Heart Month, here’s a quick guide to how you can make healthy heart choices—because loving yourself starts with loving your heart.

LOWERING THE RISK It probably won’t surprise you to hear that a healthy, nutritious diet is essential in order to lower your risk for heart disease. But it may surprise you to know that it’s not all about calories and portion control (although that’s part of it); in other words, going on a diet doesn’t necessarily mean you’re eating foods that will be healthy for your heart. A heart-healthy diet centers on cutting unhealthy fats and cholesterol, which

can lead to a buildup of plaques in your arteries and increase your risk of heart attack and stroke. Jessica Smith, M.S., R.D., C.S.O., L.D., an experienced dietitian in the Metabolic Support Services division of Cancer Treatment Centers of America, says to focus your nutritional efforts in the following areas: • Eat more fiber. Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans, fruits with skin, berries and vegetables are all high in fiber.

• Avoid hydrogenated vegetable oils. “They contain trans-fatty acids, which are arteryclogging,” Smith says. “Read labels or ingredient lists to find hydrogenated or trans fats.”

• Eat more fish. “You should eat fish two to three

times a week,” Smith says. “Especially cold-water fish that’s rich in omega-3 fatty acids, such as salmon, tuna, mackerel, herring, sardines, halibut, rainbow trout and swordfish.”

• Choose additional sources of omega-3 fatty acids. Walnuts, soybeans, flaxseed, soy nuts and canola are all rich sources.

• Eat less total fat and cholesterol. If you have coronary heart disease or your LDL cholesterol level is 100 mg/dL or greater, limit your cholesterol intake to less than 200 milligrams a day.

• Consume more antioxidants. “Antioxidants include vitamins A, C and E, which are contained in colorful fruits and vegetables,” Smith says.

The Love Field Modernization Program Dallas Love Field, the home base of Southwest Airlines, was the first airport established in Dallas.

It spent its earliest years as a U.S. Army airfield with a modest landing strip and a few hangars. Over the course of its history, Love Field has influenced aviation development in North Texas.

Currently, Love Field, which is named after pioneer Army flyer 1st Lt. Moss Lee Love, is undergoing a “construction evolution” known as the Love Field Modernization Program (LFMP). The LFMP is bringing modern design to the airport and making more efficient use of space. At the same time, it is preserving the terminal’s historic image and identity.

The passage of the Wright Amendment in 1979 made Love Field the first and only airport in the U.S. to be restricted to an arbitrary small service area. The amendment forbids service and fares from Love Field to points beyond Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and New Mexico.

In 2006, Southwest led a successful effort to overturn the Wright Amendment, which will expire in 2014. The anticipated growth opportunities made the current airport improvements necessary.

The architects for the LFMP are Dallas-based Corgan Associates, whose founder, Jack Corgan, designed the existing Love Field terminal. Corgan Associates’ new design will enhance the funda-

mentals of Love Field: passenger convenience, operational efficiency, and maintainability.

In November 2012, Love Field introduced the new Ticketing and Check-In wing that will eventually be used by all airlines. The first 12 of 20 new gates will open this spring, along with new concessions. Additionally, the Baggage Claim hall will be expanded, the main lobby will be renovated, and the three existing concourses will be replaced by a single concourse.

Even with these renovations, Love Field will preserve iconic elements and incorporate art and design that exemplify its history.

The terrazzo-floor world map— which depicts some of Love Field’s first flight paths—and the statue “Texas Ranger of 1960” will keep their places as focal art pieces in the main lobby. The bronze sculpture “Back in a Moment,” by artist Sherry Owens, and the brand-new Moss Lee Love Garden honor the airport’s namesake.

After Love Field completes its modernization, it will continue its 96-year legacy of culture and innovation. —Bob Montgomery

Community Outreach

Giving Back with Heart After spending eight years at AirTran Airways, I officially transitioned to Southwest Airlines in January 2012 and then moved from Atlanta to San Antonio for the exciting opportunity of becoming a Customer Support & Services Leader.

Although my hometown and my Company have changed, my commitment to serving others has remained a constant.

Since I’ve always had a passion for helping others, I am excited to be part of a Company that, like AirTran, values the communities it serves and encourages Employees to give back. When I was at AirTran, I had the opportunity to volunteer with Coworkers at American Red Cross blood drives, Habitat for Humanity, and Hands On Atlanta. Hard work is always easier when you’re having fun and working with others who care about the project, plus it was amazing to see how people come together as a Team around a community service project. Working alongside your peers and others gives you a sense of pride and accomplishment.

Since transitioning to Southwest last year, I’ve continued my work with American Red Cross blood drives, donating more than five gallons over the last eight years. I also spent two rewarding days at the Carrollton Food Bank in Georgia, helping prepare meals for the hungry.

It’s important that we all give back to the communities we serve, and I’m proud

that it’s part of who we are at Southwest Airlines. For me, it’s a way to recognize or help those who are less fortunate. I realize the blessings I have, and I do my best to share those blessings with others.

Another great way the Company gives back is through the Southwest Airlines Tickets for Time Program: Employees log their volunteer hours at a nonprofit organization, and, for every 40 hours, a roundtrip ticket is donated to the nonprofit for fundraising or transportation needs (up to six per year, per organization). By combining our hours, we are able to earn tickets for deserving nonprofits in no time!

I knew I’d be able to take my skills from AirTran to Southwest without a hitch, but the ability to bring my passion for my community has been invaluable. I look forward to learning the needs of the San Antonio community and spearheading a volunteer project with my Teammates in 2013. —Dennis S. Keen

AS A SERVICE AND CONVENIENCE FOR OUR CUSTOMERS, SOUTHWEST AIRLINES IS IMPLEMENTING A WIRELESS NETWORK ACROSS OUR FLEET.

WHAT IS IT? A wireless satellite–based network that allows you to connect to the Internet thousands of feet in the air!

WHEN CAN I USE IT? A Flight Attendant will alert you if the wireless network is available on your aircraft. As soon as the Flight Attendant says it is safe to turn on approved electronic devices, you are welcome to connect. The Flight Attendant will also announce when it is time to turn off and stow your device before landing.

The network will be unavailable at that time.

WHAT KIND OF DEVICE DO I NEED? All you need is a WiFi-enabled device (802.11a/b/g or n) with an Internet browser. Please note that cellular devices without a WiFi component will not work with this system, and their use is restricted to game or airplane mode per current regulations.

HOW DO I CONNECT? Every device is different, but here are the basic steps: 1. Once the Flight Attendant has announced that it is safe to use approved portable electronics, turn on your WiFi-enabled device and set to airplane mode (if applicable).

2. View available wireless networks, select “Southwest WiFi,” and connect.

3. Launch your Internet browser for immediate access to the Southwest Airlines Hotspot portal and all it has to offer.

4. To purchase WiFi, click “Get Connected” and enter the requested information.

5. Enjoy surfing the web at 30,000 feet!

WHAT CAN I DO ON IT? The Southwest Airlines WiFi features a free entertainment portal that houses limited content including a flight tracker, shopping, games, and all that southwest.com has to offer at no charge to you! On our network, you can do just about anything you can do at work or at home. Due to the shared environment, we prohibit the use of voice applications (VoIP) and attempt to filter inappropriate content. Please note the speed for viewing and downloading high-bandwidth content, such as high-quality streaming media or large-file downloads will vary.

IS IT SECURE? The onboard wireless connection is similar to a WiFi service at a coffee shop, library, hotel, or airport. You should exercise the same precautions you would at one of these public locations.

TROUBLE CONNECTING? We apologize for any inconvenience you may have experienced. First, you should have confirmed the aircraft and your device was indeed WiFi enabled, then try disconnecting and connecting again. If your problems connecting persist, we advise contacting your device manufacturer or your company’s network administrator for continued support.
