Defining the Future of the Public Research University
UC San Diego Community Through Communication Communication is integral to understanding society and connecting citizens of the world. At UC San Diego, our stellar faculty—including Pulitzer Prize and MacArthur “genius grant” winners— conduct significant research on how and why we communicate. The university fosters studies that cut across boundaries to question culture, change behavior and discover language that can impact and influence society.

Confronting Crises Through Verse
Tracking People and Behavior
Pulitzer Prize winner Rae Armantrout, M.A., pushes the English language in new directions and asks tough questions of our culture through her poetry. The poems in her book Money Shot, a response to the global financial crisis, were praised by Publishers Weekly as “among the most relevant poems now being written.”
James Fowler, Ph.D., is a professor of medical genetics and political science. National media have featured Fowler’s studies regarding social networks, real-world connections and behavior, placing him in the pop culture limelight.
Challenging Norms to Change Behavior Can people change their ways? Yes. But don’t bother preaching or outlawing. Neither will work for long. Gerald Mackie, Ph.D., says that when it comes to harmful social practices, you must empower a community to change its norms by integrating new policies into existing culture.

Finally! Shirts designed to be worn untucked
We started UNTUCKit because we had trouble finding dress shirts that really looked good when worn untucked. Most were just too long, and ended up looking sloppy if not tucked in. It shouldn’t have been that difficult, but it was. So we decided to launch a shirting company marketed exclusively for those who want to wear their shirt untucked. We would make a better shirt. A casual shirt cut for convenience and not convention; designed to fall at the perfect length. An untucked shirt. And that’s what we’ve done. So go ahead...UNTUCKit!

GARY’S GREETING
Our People Take It to Heart! 42 consecutive years of profitability; we’ve never had layoffs or involuntary furloughs; and for the past 20 years, we’ve been a mainstay on Fortune magazine’s list of the most admired companies in the world. I mention those accolades not to brag but to point out that our People made them happen. None of those accomplishments would be possible if we didn’t have the absolute best People in the business pouring their heart and soul into their jobs. Last year we undertook the daunting task of updating our brand by
introducing a bold, new look. You’ll notice a heart at its center—fitting for a Company whose core values have revolved around LUV for more than 43 years. Our People have a true passion for serving others, and we wanted to capture that spirit by placing our heart front and center for the world to see. The People-centric Culture at Southwest is one of our most valuable, cherished assets. We are a Family, and it is deeply important to us to take care of each other so that all 46,000-plus of our Employees can take great care of you! We consider our Customers guests in our home, and I sincerely hope you experience that sense of hospitality when you travel with us. Our collective heart still beats as strongly as it did when we first took to the skies so many years ago. And that is solely because of the warmth, the compassion, and, of course, the smiles of our People. The beautiful heart in our logo is a daily reminder of our commitment to remain grounded in our core values, even as we set our sights on the future. So thanks for being our guest today and for allowing us to share our heart and our “home” with you. And Happy Valentine’s Day from the LUV airline!

What sets one airline apart from another? For that matter, what sets any business apart from another? It’s easy to point to differences in products, prices, policies, procedures, strategies, or tactics. But if you drill down to the single most important difference, it’s People. Herb Kelleher, the Cofounder and Chairman Emeritus of Southwest Airlines (and my personal mentor), famously said, “The business of business is People,” and I couldn’t agree more. Southwest has a track record unlike any other airline. We’ve had

Dear Southwest, My 8-year-old flies as an unaccompanied minor a few times a year to visit his father in Virginia, but this past weekend he was having a particularly rough time leaving. I’m nine months pregnant, and he was sad to miss the birth of his sister. After my son got on the plane, I received a message from a number I didn’t recognize. It was a picture of my son sitting in the cockpit of the plane, wearing the captain’s hat, and a text that said, “Hi mom... Captain Lebert let me fly!” I just wanted to let you know how special this picture is and that you have some pretty amazing people working for you. Please make sure Scott Lebert knows how much this small gesture meant to us!—Jessica Laplant

On my recent flight to Florida, I accidentally dropped a prayer card for my deceased husband. I received the card in the mail last week because your flight attendant Yola Rojna was kind enough to go out of her way when she found it in the cabin after the flight. All she could see on the prayer card was my husband’s name and the name of the funeral home—she had to look up where in the country the funeral home was and get the address. She then took the trouble to write a note to the funeral home, asking them to return the card to me if possible. As I said, I received the card, and would like you to let Yola know that her sweet and thoughtful effort was not only successful but also very much appreciated. She must be a great asset to your company. Please commend her actions on my behalf. —Kyle Schebler COMFORTING COMPANION
I was flying for business, and flights at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport were behind schedule due to bad weather out of Minneapolis. Our connecting flight was held for us, but while on my way to that plane I received a phone call notifying me that my father had passed away. the gate attendant tried to find someone to help me. Within minutes, Kurtis Cureton, a Southwest ramp supervisor, walked through the tarmac gate door with my luggage. He could tell I was distraught and proceeded to take me and my luggage across the airport. He accompanied me through the security checkpoint and brought me directly to my new gate. Then, to my shock, he proceeded to pay my baggage fee at
the desk. I had no cash to return to him or tip him as I was traveling with only credit cards. Kurtis went above and beyond and renewed once again my faith that there are kind and compassionate people. And he made the cold and lonely feeling of being so far away from home when I received this news a bit more bearable. I hope I am able to pay it forward to someone else in need down the road. —Heidi Eberle

SEARCH AND RESCUE
My son left his blankie onboard a flight from San Diego to Kansas City. When we got home and discovered the loss, we were distraught. You see, my son has a mitochondrial disorder, and he has had this blanket since the day he was born. It has been with him through multiple surgeries, hospitalizations, and tests. We filed an official lost item report, but I wanted to take it further, so I turned to social media to ask for help. A friend knew a Southwest employee in Tampa named Chris Hayes. She immediately contacted him to ask for help, and help he did. He personally contacted gates in Kansas City, Nashville, and Tampa and found that the plane we had been on was headed to Flint. He asked for people to look, and when they didn’t find the blanket he gave us a phone number for Kansas City International Airport. The gate agents there found our blanket less than 24 hours after we lost it. I credit the help we received from Chris for helping expedite this situation. Southwest Airlines is one of my favorites for many reasons, but Chris gave me (and my son) the biggest reason to sing your praises. Thank you, Southwest and Chris. You will probably never know what this meant to us! —Tina Campbell IT’S A WRAP

I was extremely impressed with Frances Goldstraw at the Baltimore/ Washington Customer Service counter. I’m a business traveler and had to transport several bulky and heavy items given to me last-minute as I was heading to the airport. Frances helped me check the heavier items, but I still had some poorly wrapped, oversize circuit boards I planned to carry on. I asked if there was somewhere in the airport I could wrap them better. She said no but then took it upon herself to improvise with garment bags and packing tape. It made for a much more enjoyable flight and, more importantly, the circuit boards arrived undamaged. —David Petticord

24 SOUTHWEST FEBRUARY 2015
F1_star_KT.indd 24
If it’s broken, Maurice Alexander can fix it. As a Systemwide Senior Field Technician in St. Louis, Maurice spends his days keeping our airport terminals in full working order. Maurice’s journey with Southwest Airlines began in 1997 when, with a little nudge from his wife, Rosalind, he decided to give up being a selfemployed general contractor to apply for a job at the LUV airline. “It was the best move of my life,” he says. “I don’t just love a part of the job—I love the entire job, and I enjoy the Southwest spirit.” Maurice not only applies his handyman skills to the airport terminal he is responsible for maintaining but also volunteers alongside his Southwest Coworkers to rebuild homes in his community. He has been known to help a Coworker (or two) with their home improvement projects as well. But his generosity doesn’t stop there. For the past 12 years, on the second Saturday of every month, Maurice has fixed up old cars to donate to less-fortunate families in St. Louis through his church’s auto ministry. “It’s a delight to give back to my community and to see others giving back as well,” he says. “I have a purpose to serve, and I enjoy serving.” Maurice counts every day as a blessing since beating colon cancer in 1999. He remembers waking up from surgery and seeing several of his Southwest Coworkers in his hospital room. “It made me realize that the battle was not just mine,” Maurice says. “I had my own family, my church family, and my Southwest Family all pulling for me.” When he’s not focused on fixing things and helping others, Maurice enjoys swing dancing with his wife, roller-skating, and spending time with his four grown sons. “My boys thank Southwest for the freedom the Company has given them to explore the country,” he says. Thank you, Maurice, for putting others first with your Servant’s Heart. You are an inspiration to all and a shining star in the Southwest Family. —Cindy Villafranca PHOTOGRAPHY BY WESLEY LAW

RAPID REWARDS FREEDOM STORY Director of Sales, Veracity, Huntington Beach, California
Mathew Jenkins As a Southwest Airlines A-List Rapid Rewards Member, Mathew Jenkins knows all about the LUV airline. In his business travels as director of sales for Veracity, a video-surveillance technology firm, he enjoys the airline’s amazing Customer Service, availability of flights, and Frequent Flyer program. “I travel with a lot of demo equipment, and not having to pay to check my case saves Veracity thousands of dollars,” he says. But it’s Southwest’s open seating policy that’s had the biggest impact on his life to date. In September 2013, Mathew was waiting to board a flight home to Los Angeles from Chicago when he saw a beautiful woman. “We made eye contact and smiled at each other,” Mathew says. Much to his surprise, she proceeded to sit next to him on the plane. Her name was Kristen, and she was a freelance makeup artist from Rochester, New York. The two chatted for the entire flight. “It was like we were old friends,” Mathew says. “After hours of talking, we arrived in Los Angeles and decided we would go on a date the following day.” Like a real-life romantic comedy, Mathew and Kristen fell for each other and spent nearly a year flying Southwest between coasts. “Thanks to Southwest’s convenient schedule and easy-to-use Rapid Rewards Award Seats, Kristen and I were able to grow our relationship.” Last June, the cross-country treks ended as Kristen and her two children moved to California to be with Mathew and his three children. “By way of introducing us, Southwest has created a modern-day Brady Bunch,” Mathew says. “Thank you for your open seating policy. Southwest is truly all about the LUV.” Mathew and Kristen are now planning their June wedding. Thank you, Mathew, for giving Southwest your LUV for more than five years. We’re ecstatic that we played a part in bringing you and Kristen together. —Millie Millie Richter Tidwell

from the editor Meet Sam White, Detroit’s leading lady.
Dear Reader, “Opportunity is missed by most people,” Thomas Edison said, “because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.” I don’t know a better description of Detroit. People can argue all they want about whether the city is making a comeback. Meanwhile, a few are leasing some of the cheapest urban office space in the country. Then there’s 26-year-old Andy Didorosi. He purchased a fleet of buses for two grand apiece and started his own transit company. Dan Gilbert, founder of Quicken Loans, bought up nearly 3 million square feet of inexpensive real estate. Alicia George opened Motor City Java and Tea House, and a cluster of businesses joined her neighborhood. A group of smart people moved into a former automotive research lab, hired Swiss watchmakers to teach them how to make fine timepieces, and launched Shinola. The company manufactures the coolest watches made in America. Don’t call this a renaissance. Friends in Detroit tell me they’re sick of the word. 28 southwest february 2015

Besides, this is something else. Detroit may be the single best place in the country where a wild idea can have a chance. I can think of several crazy-successful startups, such as AutoBike, whose bicycles shift gears automatically; or Chalkfly, a website that sells school supplies and donates 5 percent of each purchase to teachers; or the Ocelot Print Shop, where artists and regular folks can do their own printing. Another bold idea: galvanizing the city with Shakespeare (see page 52). But that’s the thing about Detroit. Yeah, it has amazing shops and restaurants and a rebounding auto industry. It also has a great many empty buildings. Most of us would want to keep out. Only a few think how to fill them. Detroiters are right. This is no renaissance. It’s something dressed in overalls and looking like work.

A GLASS HALF FULL
While reading “D.I.Why?” (December 2014), I couldn’t help but smile and chuckle at the author’s attempts to knit a scarf. His statement that his “mind settled into a relaxed, meditative state” and that the “meditation-like state triggered by repetitive processes may decrease depression and anxiety” was spot-on. While deployed to New Kabul Compound in Afghanistan last year, a small group of us gathered weekly to knit, and that became the one thing I looked forward to every week. The camaraderie that developed between us spanned ages, abilities, job functions, units, and genders. Thank you for highlighting why making things outweighs the price of anything you can purchase in a store. And thank you for your strong support of the military! We appreciate it!

I’m a teacher at a Montessori school in Seattle, and I came across your article about what makes a good leader (“Aristotle’s Book of Love”) in the September issue. At school, we’re working on that very topic with the sixth- through eighthgraders, as they are the student leaders for the littles. I presented the article to the class, and the students brainstormed ways to be great role models. Thank you for inspiring these young adults to “spread their wings” as good leaders!

The cultural havens he frequents in the city: “Trinosophes in Eastern Market is my favorite spot for coffee. They serve local food and host a free gallery of renowned art shows on a rotating basis. In the evenings they feature live jazz, world, and experimental music. On the west side, MBAD’s African Bead Museum is an excellent outdoor art exhibit.”

PLAY Downtime What kind of research has been conducted on the health benefits of vacations? “The Framingham Heart Study determined that men at risk for cardiovascular disease who skipped vacations over a nine-year span were 30 percent more likely to suffer heart attacks than individuals who took a week off each year. A more recent Nielsen study suggests that Americans who take regular vacations are happier, healthier, and more satisfied with their jobs and relationships than those who take no time off.” How do I manage the stress of actually being out of the office? “If it stresses you out to be completely unplugged, let the office know that you’ll check email once a day while you’re away. Usually after several days, you’ll notice that the volume of email drops, and then you can relax.”
Time Out
When it comes to relieving stress, the prescription is simple: Take a vacation.
38 southwest february 2015
F2_PLAY_bm.indd 38
Why is it important to keep my stress levels in check? “Chronic stress can have very real consequences,” says Dr. Leigh Vinocur, a board-certified ER physician and the “vacation doctor” for Diamond Resorts International®. “It causes your body to release hormones like cortisol and adrenaline, which take a toll on your blood pressure and heart, and it can cause anxiety and depression. Fortunately, there are lots of ways to manage stress, using your paid time off being one of them.”
What if I don’t have time? “Break it up. Schedule things that are shorter and more manageable for you, and then you can power through work knowing you have another trip coming up. That cycle of ‘staying vacationed’ keeps you recharged and motivated. Vacations aren’t just a luxury: They’re vital for your health and for fostering your well-being.”

The Brazilian rum cachaça typically greets Americans in the lime-tinged caipirinha, but at Backbar in Boston it pairs with an unlikely companion: Cardamaro, an Italian, wine-based digestif infused with warm spices. They’re bound by citrus and cinnamon, and a dash of Tabasco waves a welcome flag. “The idea is to give people something familiar while also delivering something new,” says bar manager Melinda Maddox. “It’s a little trickery that helps the mind accept what’s happening in the mouth.”

Even when I was a little kid doing homework, my father would ask, “Was that a world-class effort?” It’s been a guiding principle for me. In college, I had a job doing paperwork for the dean of engineering. After my first day, my dad called and asked, “Did you do a world-class job?” to which I replied, “It’s not that kind of work.” He said, “Just the same: Do a world-class job.” The next day, I stood in front of the copy machine, trying to figure out how to do a world-class job with something so simple, and then I just started doing it—making the fastest, clearest copies, printing labels, creating a new filing system. I’ve learned that it’s often little details that lead to big opportunities. It’s giving attention to even the tiniest aspects of your work that separates you from everyone else who can do a “good enough” job.

Job One: Innovation
No matter where you work, the secret to getting ahead has more to do with strategy than tactics. If you want to put your career in hyperdrive, pay attention to the part of your job that may not show up in black and white on your job description: innovation. That’s the ability to think about your role strategically. When the head of shipping for a former client of mine stepped back from his daily tasks and projects to think strategically about his job, he realized he could improve the timeliness of shipments if he had other

departments give him notice long before they reached him. His innovation not only dramatically improved customer satisfaction; it did wonders for his bonus. Most of us spend our time on projects, completing tasks. Strategy, on the other hand, is about achieving a vision. You might think that strategic thinking is limited to a CEO or owner. But here’s what I know: Strategy is key for both ends of the corporate ladder. If you’re a frontline manager,
you should question everything you’re asked to do and encourage and reward those you manage for doing the same. Routinely ask, “How can we do this task better? How can we document and refine this process? How can we rotate others through this department to give it a new set of eyes?” A strategic employee looks for every opportunity to innovate. She becomes known as an expert inside her organization, and she volunteers on every possible strategic project—even when it seems unrelated to her specific job. That head of shipping? He discovered how to speed up the assembly and delivery of orders by joining a customer-service task force that revealed customers were unhappy with the timeliness of orders. While your job description may be filled with tasks and projects, your primary mission is to help your organization achieve its vision. Imagine putting traditional hierarchy aside. Go to work on improving everything around you. Congratulations: You’re now thinking like the C suite. And by doing so, you increase your chances of occupying one someday.

eneath the leaky roof of Detroit’s original Lincoln Motor Company factory, ice creeps along the cinder-block walls and trash spills across the cracked concrete floor. Once abandoned like much of this embattled city, the warehouse is now home to the nonprofit Recycle Here. Compactors loom like corpulent insects waiting to be fed soymilk cartons, phone books, and tin cans. ¶ Huddled on uprooted bus benches and swaddled in blankets and wool caps, hundreds of spectators crowd around a splintered stage built from shipping pallets. Their collective breath fogs the air. Onstage, bathed in the light of two blazing torches, Marc Antony chooses the intoxicating beauty of the Egyptian pharaoh Cleopatra over the fate of his own Roman empire. The setting for this performance of the Shakespearean tragedy Antony and Cleopatra is an apt symbol for a city that was itself, once upon a time, a dominant empire. The play was chosen to reflect the tension inherent in Detroit’s newfound resurgence, between those who are bound to the city’s past, as in Antony’s Rome, and those who are driving its innovative future, à la Cleopatra’s Egypt. Antony sports a disheveled leather jacket; the word “fear” adorns a patch on his shredded jeans. Cleopatra wears a headdress carved from an old soccer ball and carries an asp cut from a bicycle tire. The peculiar costumes are upcycled trash foraged from the factory. During the performance a woman wearing a kaleidoscopic dress and crimson lipstick stalks the edge of the crowd, pacing incessantly in her high heels. After the finale she takes the stage to thank the audience, composing herself to mask the panic that still seizes her any time she addresses a crowd. She introduces herself as Sam White, founder and executive director of Shakespeare in Detroit. In addition to her stage fright, there are other things she’s hiding from the assembly before her. Exhaustion, for one. The number of jobs she holds often exceeds the number of hours she sleeps at night. And after leaving a

Yet American Coney Island remains the original and the only that’s still family-owned. As Juliet, Luna Alexander knows all about family rivalries, so she refuses to choose between the two. She always grabs one from each.

Morgan Breon as Ariel at the Belle Isle Conservatory
Belle Isle, a wooded, 982-acre state park on the Detroit River, is home to this 110-year-old botanical garden designed by noted architect Albert Kahn, who gleaned the dome inspiration from Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello. The Beaux-Arts marvel is maintained by 4,500 volunteers. That communal effort mirrors the essence of Shakespeare in Detroit, according to Morgan Breon, who relishes performing for “both the homeless and the polished Shakespeare scholar.”

well-paying post at Ford to pursue this unlikely dream, she rests her head on a rotating cast of beds and couches offered by friends and family because the 33-year-old can no longer afford her own place. There’s the looming possibility of failure, for another. This ambitious project may yet collapse in spite of her ceaseless work and sacrifice. Starting a business is always a risky affair, but launching a Shakespeare company in a city with a crippled economy seems almost foolhardy. Revenues have been lower than expected. Two crowdfunding campaigns have failed. She’s done bake sales and sold off personal items that were hard to let go, which provided only temporary relief. If she can’t raise sufficient funds from private investors, the whole thing could collapse. Yet Sam is motivated by factors that make failure unfeasible. She grew up in a hardscrabble Detroit neighborhood, and the Bard changed her life against all odds. She’s determined he can do the same for others, and she’s already making a name for herself. Last year she was heralded one of Crain’s Detroit Business 40 Under 40. She’s also drained her personal savings account, so there’s no room for error. She slows her breathing and tells the crowd a version of a mantra she repeats often: “You have to have a healthy, thriving creative community to have a successful city. As artists, we have the responsibility to bring people together.” But why bring them together amid piles of trash?

Othello
Hugh M. Duneghy II and Dennis Kleinsmith as Othello (left) and Iago (right) at Slows Bar BQ Sam picked Othello for her inaugural production because she saw parallels between the struggles of the play’s hero and the obstacles faced by then mayoral candidate Mike Duggan. Yet her work wouldn’t be possible without the help of people like Slows’ owner, Phil Cooley. When Phil returned home in 2005 after a stint in Europe as a fashion model, he built the city’s premier destination restaurant. He used the profits to invest in community initiatives like Ponyride, a business and arts incubator housed in a 30,000-square-foot factory where Shakespeare in Detroit rehearses three days a week.
S
am was 8 years old when Shakespeare came knocking. In her bedroom with the door closed, she pressed her ear against her portable, gray boom box while the hip-hop trio Salt-N-Pepa played low so her mother wouldn’t hear. Her mom caught the hushed beats warbling from Sam’s room anyway and climbed into the attic to unearth a dusty, oversize book. She tapped on Sam’s door and plopped The Complete Works of William Shakespeare into her arms. “If you like lyrics so much, read this,” she said. Sam despised it at first and considered slogging through the archaic language an unusual form of punishment. A little each day she was forced to grapple with material that vexes many high school students. Eventually, as a teenager, she began grasping the stories and even found some refuge during those angst-ridden years, particularly when she discovered Othello. “When I found out there was a lead character that had brown skin like me, I couldn’t believe it,” she says. “There was somebody I felt like I could relate to.” At the local public schools, including Mumford High, where two students were shot on the first day in 2010, she was given little exposure to the arts. Shakespeare wasn’t even part of the curriculum. But at home she immersed herself and filled dozens of journals with reflections and poetry. During family gatherings she staged plays with her cousins—always the director, always an entertainer.

Zach Hendrickson as Octavius Caesar with the Detroit Bus Company When funding for public transportation was slashed, Detroit became more disconnected than ever. Andy Didorosi, 26, resolved to bring it back together. He bought a few Blue Bird school buses and hired a graffiti artist to paint them: A bus company that offers free rides to those in need was born. “In other cities you’re a passenger,” Andy says. “Here in Detroit you have a chance to make a real difference.” Zach Hendrickson agrees: “We’re creating something for our neighbors, for the place we call home.”

Tyree Guyton transformed his street in one of the most depressed ZIP codes in the country into one of the world’s most inspiring art projects, all with the goal of jumpstarting economic growth. He began by painting bold polka dots on his grandfather’s house. His eclectic works now encompass two city blocks and attract 200,000 visitors each year. Shoes are hung throughout to symbolize Tyree’s aspiration to lift the souls (“soles”) of the community.
Years later, as she was planning her first show for Shakespeare in Detroit, she came to recognize in his work a reflection of her hometown. “If there’s any city in the world that can relate to Shakespeare, it’s Detroit,” she says, “because of what we’ve been through and what we’re going through. There’s comedy, tragedy, and pain.” While she was growing up, Sam’s father worked for General Motors and her mom stayed at home, both native Detroiters who saw The Motor City at its bustling height. (Detroit still boasts the country’s largest theater district outside of New York’s Broadway, a holdover from the golden automobile age and the postwar economic boom.) Sam was born in 1981, as manufacturers were fleeing and the city’s population was in freefall. Other Rust Belt cities have endured similar devastation while attempting to transform their economies in the wake of collapse, but no other metropolis has been on stage for all to see quite like Detroit. From a peak population of 1.8 million in 1950, the city is currently home to less than 700,000. In July 2013 Detroit became the largest municipality in history to file for bankruptcy. While the city has formally emerged from insolvency and its downtown is turning into one of the country’s hippest destinations, daunting obstacles remain to sustain this momentum over the long haul. After graduating from Detroit’s Wayne State University, Sam fled to Las Vegas in hopes of making it as a comedian. She slept in a hotel and tried to beg her way on stage, with little luck. After a year she was disillusioned and homesick, and when a friend invited her to the Utah Shakespeare Festival, she leapt at the chance. As her bus charted a course through the red-orange desert, she reconsidered the direction of her own life. She felt pulled back home, but what was there for her? Two days of performances inspired an unusual idea: If they can have a festival in the middle of the desert, we can have Shakespeare in Detroit. She returned home in 2008 but was too crippled by doubt to start her own company. Instead, she picked up odd jobs and eventually landed a position with Ford. But for four years she remained restless and unhappy. “Have you ever heard the phrase ‘It was written in the stars’?” she asked the audience at TEDx Detroit in September. “Instead of taking responsibility for our own futures, or our own behavior, and realizing just how powerful we all are, we often forfeit all of that power to some sort of predestined circumstance—or a star.” She told herself she wasn’t smart enough, didn’t have enough money, and wasn’t connected to the right people. “I’m from the west side of 7 Mile in Detroit—I can’t start a Shakespeare company!” she said. “And that’s just the way it is. I am who I am.” Shakespeare’s King Lear, the monarch who went mad, compelled her to contemplate what sanity really means. “Perhaps a little bit of insanity is needed to go after your dreams, because there is nothing simple and comfortable about it.” february 2015 southwest 61

In 2012 she enrolled in The First Step, a course for aspiring entrepreneurs offered by the Detroit startup incubator TechTown. Of the 50 students who attended the class, only 10 graduated, one of them with an improbable business plan in a city ravaged by The Great Recession: Shakespeare in Detroit.
“W
ho is it!” comes a coarse, threatening voice from inside the house. Sam, wearing jeans and a Ferrari hoodie, steels herself on the front porch and launches into her pitch: “Hello! My name is Sam White. I’m a Mumford graduate—Go Mustangs!—and I’m the founder of Shakespeare in Detroit. I just wanted to invite you and your family to a free performance of Romeo and Juliet at Mumford. Everyone is welcome, and we’re serving free dinner beforehand.” Next to her stands Emilio Rodriguez, the Mumford drama teacher whom Sam has tapped to direct Romeo and Juliet. He holds an umbrella in one hand and a plastic shopping bag stuffed with flyers in the other. In this neighborhood on the near west side, a short walk from 7 Mile Road, Mumford High School rises in the distance. A few houses are deserted, but all the lawns are manicured, vacant yards likely tended by neighbors. The man ambles to the door and eyes Sam through his steel-barred security door. “What do you want?” “I’m not trying to sell you anything,” she reassures him. “I just wanted to invite you to our Shakespeare performance at the school.” The school fits into Sam’s “site-specific” philosophy: They stage plays where people live, work, and play rather than in traditional theaters. For their inaugural performance in August 2013, 500 people turned out to see Othello in downtown’s Grand Circus Park. A Midsummer Night’s Dream played both at New Center Park and the historic Whitney restaurant. The Boll Family YMCA hosted The Tempest, and King Lear is set for this April at Marygrove College. In this way Sam aims to lure diverse crowds to nooks of the city they might not visit otherwise, a formidable task considering that Detroit is the most segregated

metro area in the country. At the same time, she aspires to take Shakespeare where he’s largely unknown. In addition to being the founder and executive director, she’s also evangelist-in-chief. For each show, she spends countless hours campaigning to fill the seats by posting on social media, pleading for write-ups in the papers, pounding the pavement, and winning over one person at a time. Throughout this day, as Sam tramps across the neighborhood, she meets many Mumford alumni who, after some skepticism, warm to her crusade. From the porch, she offers the man a save-the-date card, and he unlocks the security door to accept. She thanks him and strides off, triumphant. That’s one. She’ll need a few more. Although more than 3,000 people attended Shakespeare in Detroit’s first full season, finances are a constant concern. Coming out of TechTown, Sam aspired to function like a tech startup. “In other words, not just creating art for art’s sake but creating something sustainable with a strategy and measurable data,” she says. But a for-profit Shakespeare company has proven untenable. She manages to pay the actors by way of ticket sales, and the other essentials of running a theater company are pieced together. For Antony and Cleopatra, the stage lighting, benches, and costumes were all donated, and Emilio’s drama students landed a grant to bring Romeo and Juliet to Mumford. She even has to persuade her partners to stick around. Emilio has committed to two years at Mumford through Teach for America and is set on migrating to New York or Chicago soon thereafter. There was no drama program at the high school before him, and there will likely be none if he leaves. After knocking on a few more doors, they venture out toward the nearby business district and duck into a religious bookstore, a gas station, a food pantry, and a barbershop, where they’re kicked out before having the chance to explain themselves. Still, they’re undaunted and march over to a Little League baseball game. They walk 6 miles in all, and Sam manages to create intimate connections even in awkward situations. “I was born an artist, but along the way I became kind of an activist and an advocate,” she says. “In some ways I’m a voice for people who haven’t been given a chance to
Detroit’s first licensed distillery since Prohibition opened in the city’s oldest neighborhood, Corktown, in a 1900 brick warehouse that has at turns housed a donut factory and a taxi-cab repair station. The tasting room even has views of the old Michigan Central Station. And when it came time to christen their first batch of spirits, the guys at Two James conceived of 28 Island Vodka, a reference to the islands dotting the Detroit River that were once used as hiding places to smuggle moonshine into the Motor City. Chris Jakob also draws inspiration from the
burg: “Detroit to this day remains my muse, brimming with opportunities for creativity, art, even agriculture. It’s unlike any city I know of.” It’s also the perfect place to perform Shakespeare, he says, to “not only help people cope with their day-to-day stations in life but to dream of something bigger and rise above it.”

or now, the Western world’s most fabled warring families, the Capulets and the Montagues, are at peace. Juliet, Lady Capulet, Mercutio, and Montague are playing an impromptu version of Hacky Sack in the Ponyride ballet studio, swatting a ball of tape in the air while waiting for rehearsals to begin. Someone mentions the word “royal,” and in unison they belt out the hit song “Royals,” by Grammy Award–winning artist Lorde. Emilio pulls costumes and props from a black garbage bag and hands Romeo, played by the lanky, blonde Ryan Ernst, a low-cut, red shirt. “Would Romeo have chest hair?” Ryan asks, concluding before Emilio can answer: “He’d be a shaver.” Amongst the tape-swatting clutch of actors, Alexis Mabry stands out in a knee-length, cherry-colored dress, her simple but striking costume as Juliet. She first met Sam when the sleep-deprived director stopped in at the coffeehouse where she worked, and Sam encouraged her to audition for Antony and Cleopatra. She’s been cast in every performance since, and Sam has become an important mentor. “She has so much drive and is so good at what she does,” Alexis says. “If I can be involved with anything she does, I’ll follow her to the end.” Other young actors echo this sentiment. Phil Rice, who plays Tybalt, confesses he was planning to leave the state entirely after graduating from the University of Michigan, but Sam inspired him to reconsider. “She makes the text accessible to people who may not have seen it. The community can see themselves in the situations Shakespeare writes about, universal situations like love, poverty, jealousy.” Emilio herds his actors into a circle for a warm-up exercise. “Make a knuckle sandwich, and put it below your chin,” he says, and the studio’s frenetic energy becomes focused and calm. “When you inhale, bring your arms up. When you exhale, put them down.” Despite their intensive preparations, things don’t always go as planned. While the troupe performed in Grand Circus Park, Jimmy Buffet fans in Hawaiian shirts and leis stumbled through the audience as they arrived for a nearby concert. The stage’s underpowered sound system occasionally dissolved into static, and a few Buffet stragglers stopped to ring the giant stainless steel bell that serves as public art for the park. At one point, a familiar Sir Mix-A-Lot tune blared from an adjacent bar and muffled the vows of starstruck lovers. Dominique Lowell is accustomed to the highs and lows. In Romeo and Juliet she plays the Nurse, the lovesick girl’s doting caretaker. In real life, like other seasoned Detroiters, she’s less inclined to gush when discussing the city’s current transformation. “You have to

understand, I’m kinda old now, at least relative to most of the people doing theater and art in Detroit,” says the 53-year-old. “I’ve heard this ‘Detroit Renaissance’ stuff a number of times before—once or twice a decade, I’d say. The problem with Detroit has always been that there was no center to it. The sprawl and the abandonment left too many holes where the wind blows through.” Dominique was 6 years old when the 1967 race riots plagued the city. She spent those five days worrying about her father, a reporter for The Detroit News who snuck into the demilitarized zone beneath the tarp of a National Guard jeep. She recalls a palpable change afterward, something the city is still recovering from. After college, she left for the East Coast before tacking westward and settling in San Francisco for a decade. Eventually, “like a salmon swimming upstream,” she returned home to raise her children. Despite her reservations, even Dominique sees new reasons for hope. “The cultural activity going down now

ozens of clucking high school students funnel through metal detectors and into the Mumford High School atrium long after most students have gone for the day. Their excitement ricochets off the 40-foot glass ceiling as they migrate to the cafeteria, where rows of fried chicken are laid out on lunch tables. Among them is Symphony Shelton, a 15-year-old here with her mother, sisters, and a few friends. She writes poetry and aspires to be an actress—she confides that she often pretends to be on stage while in front of her mirror—but the closest thing she’s been afforded is a talent show. She’s just the kind of student Sam hopes to reach: It’s her first real theater experience. She’s unfamiliar with Romeo and Juliet, knowing only that it “involves love.” Inside the auditorium, the lights dim, and the hive of students goes quiet. The place is quiet and beautiful, dark and fully modern. It was rebuilt along with the rest of the school in 2012. The audio booth and stage lighting are state-of-the-art, yet this is its very first production. The actors circle together and beat their chests, chanting the play’s themes: hope, fate, blood, family, love. There is no scenery or props, but they keep the play visually interesting with body language. The raw acting cuts through the dense language, drawing the audience along on the journey. The fights play out like dances, and the famous balcony scene is accomplished with Juliet perched on the legs of two actors on bended knee. Alexis portrays Juliet as a smarmy high school student,

eminently relatable to the students, and Ryan’s confused and uncertain Romeo captures the turmoil of adolescence. After their first kiss, a few girls awwww while a group of boys pshhhht, feigning disinterest. During scene changes the audience dances to the hiphop–inspired score. Through it all, Sam sits rapt in the front row. At the play’s climax, as Juliet wakes up to find Romeo lifeless at her side, gasps can be heard across the room. When she raises the dagger and joins him in death, several are brought to tears. One of the world’s most famous stories has a surprise ending to much of the audience. After the show, Symphony is ecstatic. “I liked the acting, especially the mom. She deserved the applause,” she says while relishing an ice cream sandwich. “And I want to get better at the language they speak.” As the audience trickles out, Sam scours the cafeteria, stuffing wrappers into a trash bag. After an emotional performance, she’s already back to reality. Tonight, she’ll once again sleep on a friend’s couch and wake a few hours later to begin anew. Yet there are markers of progress. The experience impacted Emilio so profoundly that he’s decided to remain in Detroit. And then there’s the audience’s response. Sam pauses to contemplate the gasps and tears and excited kids. “Now I feel like I’m doing something,” she says. “When the kids told me they enjoyed it…” She trails off, choking back tears, and then points at a group of students. “I was there, and they are me.” Suddenly, across the cafeteria, one student scampers up to Phil, who played Tybalt, and sheepishly blurts out, “You were my favorite character!” before running away. Sam just smiles. Drew Philp is a theater critic for the Detroit Metro Times.

The debate over the importance of a graduate degree is academic: According to 2014 data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the greater your level of education, the lower your rate of unemployment. Factor in greater earning power and more upward mobility, and the argument for higher learning has never made more sense. february 2015 southwest 81

‘We’ve worked very hard to make the program minimize the impact on students’ already busy lives, careers, and families.’ BEST OF BOTH WORLDS
The value of pursuing an MBA can’t be denied—it elevates your financial security, standing in the workplace, and position within the global economy. But when it comes to committing to a degree, the realities of life often get in the way. Since 1999, Auburn University’s Raymond J. Harbert College of Business has removed these obstacles through all-inclusive, reasonably priced programs that deliver concierge-level service and attention. With a track record of high value and ROI, the school’s Executive MBA and Physicians Executive MBA programs champion convenience and flexibility for students through a 21-month curriculum that blends five short oncampus, cohort-based residencies with distance learning and a 10-day international study experience. “We’ve worked very hard to make the program minimize the impact on students’ already busy lives, careers, and families,” says Stan Harris, Ph.D., associate dean for graduate programs. “Our lessons are very practical too—we try to make the learning as applicable as possible and something they can apply immediately in the real world.”
A MATTER OF CONVENIENCE
Finding the right balance is vital to creating and maintaining the momentum you’ll need to pursue an advanced degree and accelerate your career. The Toulouse Graduate School at the University of North Texas features three accelerated master’s degree programs, all of which are 100 percent online to maximize convenience and adaptability. With five varying start dates a year, the flexible eight-week courses allow you to proceed at your own pace by taking one or two courses at a time. UNT is the largest and most comprehensive university in the North Texas region and is ranked 17th on U.S. News and World Report’s list of online MBA programs, placing a quality higher education fully within your grasp.
Many master’s programs now allow students to obtain degrees online or in person.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE
While a graduate degree is often measured in terms of earning potential and career advancement, the ability to utilize it for the greater good is important for many students. Aimee Chabot has plans to do just that. “A graduate degree allows you to go really in depth into your chosen field and get some valuable training,” she says. “My goals are to accomplish something meaningful—I want to make a real contribution.” Chabot, a U.S. Army veteran, utilized the GI Bill to pay for her undergraduate psychology degree from the University of California, San Diego. When it came time to decide where she would continue her graduate studies, she recognized that the quality of professors and researchers at UC San Diego—ranked sixth in the nation and second among all U.S. public institutions for total research output—truly fit her interests. Chabot received a graduate research fellowship from the National Science Foundation to continue her education and is currently enrolled as a second-year Ph.D. student. The financial obstacles she navigated during her educational pursuits have shaped her research

I didn’t see any application for it,” he says. Putting his ideas into action, Sikora created his first company as part of the signature course series of Rady’s MBA program, called Lab to Market. Now the CEO of CardioCell, a rapidly growing San Diegobased biotech company, Sikora is quick to credit his master’s program for delivering invaluable training, resources, and connections. “I owe 90 percent of the success of my career to the Rady School,” he says. “You jump into a very vibrant environment. ANSWERING A CALLING
A commitment to continuing education through an advanced degree creates an impactful career path for many people. But what about using your undergraduate degree to land a rewarding career in education? That’s the question Nevada’s Clark County School District, the fifthlargest school district in the country, is looking to address with one of its new programs. The district—which serves all of Clark County, including the city of Las Vegas—is targeting college graduates who have earned a bachelor’s degree in a field other than education but have always been passionate about teaching. CCSD’s unique Alternative Routes to Licensure programs are designed to allow candidates to become eligible for full-time employment as contracted teachers within five weeks. No upfront coursework or student teaching is required, simply a conferred bachelor’s degree from an accredited university in an area other than education, along with a minimum 2.75 cumulative GPA. While drawing a salary and receiving benefits, candidates have three years to satisfy remaining Nevada Department of Education requirements for full teacher licensure. Five individual ARL programs are offered in areas of teacher shortage: elementary, special education, math, science, and English. As candidates progress toward their licenses, they receive 120–150 hours of rigorous professional development, including 15 days in the classroom, weekly mentoring, and monthly seminars. Staci Vesneske, CCSD’s chief human resources officer, says the district’s self-run ARL programs are making an impact in the Las Vegas area after several prospective teachers pursued other professions during a down economy. “Young people quit going into education as a major,” she says. “They decided, ‘I’m
going to major in biology or math, something that guarantees me a job.’ Fast-forward four or five years, and they’re graduating and seeing that we’re hiring teachers again. Now they’re coming into our ARL programs.” With 357 schools housing more than 315,000 students, the district’s “Calling All Heroes” campaign is looking for 2,600 new teachers who can make a difference in students’
lives for the upcoming school year. “Teaching is a noble profession, and for people who really want to teach, this is a great opportunity for them without having to make a big investment in a master’s degree program or a lot of extra graduate work. Our kids just need incredible people who can teach them,” Vesneske says. “And it’s Vegas. So you’re going to have a fabulous time in the city when you’re not teaching.”

Know what questions to ask.
Gaining knowledge starts with asking the right questions. Cancer Treatment Centers of America® (CTCA) has compiled a list of 10 questions to help newly diagnosed patients understand the nature of their disease, and be more prepared, knowledgeable, and better able to understand the recommended approach to their treatment.
Tremendous advances have recently been made in the treatment of cancer. Breakthroughs unimaginable a generation ago are now saving lives as a matter of course. And the one consistent enabling truth in the fight against cancer throughout the years has always been this: Knowledge is power.
1
Get a second opinion.
A patient needs to be aware of all treatment options and to feel confident and informed about his or her treatment decision. Initial diagnoses are not always right. A second opinion is a chance to gain more knowledge and insight into the accuracy of the initial diagnosis and to better understand additional needs like nutritional planning, the management of side effects, and the power of family support during cancer treatment.
The complete set of questions and a richer discussion of the benefits of getting a second opinion may be found at: cancercenter.com/secondopinion

A balanced diet is vital for a healthy heart.
BALANCING HEART HEALTH
By now, we’ve all heard the statistics. Each year, one out of every four deaths is caused by heart disease, making it the No. 1 killer of Americans. The good news, however, is that simple measures can have a major impact on heart health, according to Dr. Steven Hotze, founder and CEO of Hotze Health & Wellness Center in Houston. Hotze recommends eating a balanced diet, not smoking, exercising, and taking vitamins that promote heart health—such as CoQ10, fish oil, magnesium, and vitamins C and E. Managing other conditions can also benefit your heart. Studies have shown that patients with optimal thyroid function actually have a decreased rate of death due to heart attacks. While a number of Americans attempt to lower their cholesterol with statin drugs, Hotze says many people are unaware of the impact that properly diagnosing and treating hypothyroidism can have in preventing heart disease.
Keeping your hormones in balance may be good for your heart as well. Keeping your hormones in balance may be good for your heart as well, as studies have indicated that hormonal decline can lead to heart disease. In men, testosterone can improve a weak, slow heartbeat and reduce the intensity, duration, and frequency of angina. For women, estrogen dilates the coronary arteries, increasing the blood supply to the heart, while progesterone is shown to protect the arteries against spasms. “The choice is yours on whether you want to prevent or treat heart disease,” Hotze says. “Take control of your heart—and your health—today.”
SURVIVING SEASONAL ALLERGIES Another winter has come and gone, and spring fever is in the air. Unfortunately, something else is in the air, and it’s primed to ruin your fun. According to the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology, the main allergens that trigger seasonal allergies are grass, pollen, and mold. Mild winter temperatures and rainy springs create conditions ripe for early plant pollination and increased mold growth. When symptoms become severe, your allergist may recommend a number of prescription or over-the-counter medications. You should begin taking these in advance of symptoms if you have a prior history. Another option may be allergy shots, or immunotherapy, which expose you to allergens over time and increase your tolerance.

GRATITUDE FOR LIFE
If positivity is indeed contagious, a number of studies over the past 10 years indicate it may be worth catching. Research shows people who display positive emotions like gratitude and forgiveness boast stronger immune systems, lower blood pressure, and fewer symptoms of illness. Positive people also typically experience better sleep, an increased tolerance for aches and pains, and stronger relationships. “An attitude of gratitude improves our quality of life,” says Dr. David Wakefield, a psychologist with Cancer Treatment Centers of America in Tulsa. “Gratitude is an antidote for negative emotions like depression, anxiety, and anger. Gratitude can help change our perspective in the midst of struggles.” Wakefield says that this positive outlook can be especially important if you’re battling cancer. He suggests making a concerted effort to
be grateful for the treatments you’re receiving, the people supporting and caring for you, and the team of doctors and clinicians who are treating your disease. GETTING TO THE CORE
Spring is the perfect time to focus on fitness. Dr. Stefan Prada, an orthopedic spine surgeon at Laser Spine Institute, recommends a commitment to strengthening your core this year. As the center of your body, your core helps support your spine. Strengthening your core, Prada says, will result in more power and fewer injuries and may help prevent chronic back pain. “Start by creating a routine. Pick an exercise regimen, like yoga or Pilates, that focuses on your core muscles, and find a partner to help keep you accountable,” Prada says. “You should see big results after a few short weeks and be on your way to a healthier core and back.”

Breaking up your exercise regimen into intervals can add some challenge to what might have become a mundane routine. INTENSITY OF EFFORT
If you’re ready to get back into shape but are simply bored with the same well-worn workout routine, it may be time to pick up the pace with interval training. The concept is simple: Alternating bursts of intense activity with intervals of lighter activity allows you to burn more calories while spending less time exercising. Gary Kehoe, founder and CEO of nutritional supplement pioneer DreamBrands, explains the benefits of adding interval training to your regimen: • You don’t have to learn any new exercises. It’s as easy as modifying what you’re currently doing by increasing intensity in short bursts and then returning to your normal pace. • Your aerobic capacity increases. As your cardiovascular fitness improves, you’ll be able to exercise longer and with more intensity. • Intense exercise by itself can cause muscle soreness due to lactic acid accumulation. Alternating bursts of intense exercise with easier intervals can reduce the buildup of waste products in your muscles. You’ll find that breaking up your exercise regimen into intervals can add some challenge to what might have become a mundane routine.
To help you reach your fitness goals, you should also consider implementing a high-quality dietary supplement full of vital nutrients that can boost your energy, support healthy hormone levels, reduce stress, and improve overall good health.
Committing to an exercise regimen with a reliable partner will help you stick to new workout routines.
FUTURE OF HEALING
As we age, our rigorous, active lifestyles often catch up with us. Complications from injury, overuse, and disease may lead to debilitating back and joint pain. For those seeking a viable alternative to surgery, the area of regenerative medicine can be a true game changer, allowing patients to continue their active lifestyles as their bodies heal from within.

“ Finally, I have
my life back.”
Kit’s
STORY Three years ago I was experiencing chronic migraines. I was taking a preventative antiseizure medicine that was not helping and, was warned, could do major damage to my liver. I was also taking the maximum dose of medicine to help my severe daily acid reflux, which was not helping. The doctor said the only remaining option was to do surgery and make “corrections” to my digestive system! Yikes!
I was 42 and felt like I was trapped in the body of an 80-year-old woman! I was suffering with constant extreme fatigue, my joints ached all the time, I was 40 pounds overweight, and my desire for most anything was gone. After my hysterectomy, I began suffering with hot flashes and night sweats that were non-stop. I had been through MRIs, blood tests, upper and lower GI tests, and so many more I cannot even begin to list.
Luckily, at a day spa one day, a woman told me of her struggles and how the Hotze Health & Wellness Center had helped her. Hallelujah! Could this be the answer to my prayers? I went to see Dr. Hotze and told him of ALL my problems. He smiled and said “It’s all going to be OK. We can definitely help you”.
Now I feel like a vibrant, joyful 45-year old woman with my whole life ahead of me. After completing Dr. Hotze’s yeast-free eating program, I lost 35 pounds and was able to get off all the medicine for the acid reflux! Now I am on bioidentical hormone therapy, natural thyroid and cortisol and no longer take ANY medicine for migraines and rarely get one!! I have energy, am well rested and look forward to each day that I am blessed with. Thanks to the doctors and staff at the Center, I have my life back!

A pioneer in the field of orthopedic medicine, Dr. A.J. Farshchian, medical director for the Center for Regenerative Medicine in Miami, offers a number of definitive treatment regimens. A physical therapy program called Collateral Arterial Flow Exchange utilizes the collateral arteries to direct blood circulation to damaged regions, naturally increasing their nutritional support. Farshchian also instructs his

The Knee Diaries: SJ is a 60-year-old male with the chief complaint of knee pain who visited The Center for Regenerative Medicine over a year ago. He was diagnosed with bone-on-bone osteoarthritis of the left knee, causing much pain and discomfort; at that point he was told only a total knee replacement could help him. He is otherwise healthy. On exam he had point tenderness to the medial side of the left knee (medical lingo: inner side). An X-ray showed severe arthritis of the knee (X-ray on the left). Patient started receiving treatments at The Center for Regenerative Medicine. Today he is feeling better (X-ray on the right).
activities during our waking hours impact our sleep cycle—smoking habits, alcohol intake, and dietary patterns can adversely affect your quality of rest. But did you know that spending time in the sun may act as a natural sleep aid? The Snoring Center, the world’s leading provider of office-based, minimally invasive treatment for snoring and sleep apnea, cites recent data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey that explains the effect of nutrient intake on sleep quality and sleep symptoms. The studies found that low levels of vitamin D led to difficulties in staying asleep at night. Researchers at Louisiana State University also found that a vitamin D deficiency has been linked to insomnia and even sleep apnea. Exposure to sunlight—at least 10 to 15 minutes a day is recommended—is crucial for the production of vitamin D, which is found in very few foods. Have your vitamin D levels measured through a blood test to see if they are sufficient or if you should consider vitamin D supplements. If you have ongoing sleep issues, discuss them with your health care provider, or make plans to speak with a physician specializing in sleep disorders.
This is how it works: The physician introduces Cell Therapy into damaged, arthritic cells by means of a precise injection. This process is followed by several other modalities, including Collateral Artery Flow Exercises (C.A.F.E.), in order to accelerate the process. Depending on tissue damage, severity of the condition and the size of the joint that needs to be injected, people usually need a series of 1 to 6 treatments to improve. There is usually no downtime, and people can go back to their usual activities or work immediately. The treatments can help most musculoskeletal problems such as low back pain, neck pain, knee pain, shoulder pain, whiplash, sciatica, tendinitis, sprain, strains, torn ligaments and cartilage damage. Located in Miami, Florida, The Center for Regenerative Medicine includes a team of professionals that are dedicated to improve your quality of life, paving the way to enhance the science of non-surgical orthopedic medicine. World champions, sports legends, professional and amateur athletes, dancers, and people with just plain pain and arthritis go to The Center for Regenerative Medicine for nonsurgical orthopedic care. Using the facility to improve their condition, thousands of successful cases have been treated over the past nine years.

frequently can present quite a challenge for the elderly. The rewards are obvious: Studies have shown that staying inside every day is detrimental to a senior’s health, while experiencing nature and getting out into the community can provide physical, emotional, and social benefits. So what are the main drawbacks? In-home care provider Right at Home conducted a recent poll in which nearly a quarter of the respondents named transportation as the greatest challenge to senior independence. For seniors who are living at home and need assistance with the activities of daily living, in-home care can be the perfect resource to support independence in the community. Professional caregivers can provide key support for senior clients who wish to stay active by arranging successful, safe outings; providing transportation to and from the home; identifying new activities as health needs and abilities change; delivering hygiene care so seniors look and feel their best; and helping them manage walkers and other mobility aids. Exercise, socialization, and stress reduction are just some of the benefits that can help seniors maintain a sense of self. RELIEF IN SIGHT
Allergies frequently put a damper on our best intentions to get active during the springtime, but they’re not the only irritants that affect your eye health. Blepharitis is a low-grade inflammatory disease that can cause dry eye syndrome, contact lens intolerance, and inflamed, itchy, irritated eyelids. It’s a common condition caused by a bacterial biofilm, laden with exotoxins, accumulating along the lid margin and causing irritation. Progression to a chronic condition is typical. cleans the lids by removing the scurf, debris, crusting, and biofilm that accumulates over time, which relieves symptoms and allows people to eventually begin making their own tears. Reveling in the advent of pleasant weather is an annual rite of spring, but the damage that the sun’s rays can inflict on your skin is an unsavory byproduct. Fortunately, cutting-edge diagnosis and treatment options exist for everything from mere aesthetic concerns to skin cancer. At the Berman Skin Institute, patients are treated in a compassionate manner that lets them look as young as they feel. This dedication to patient welfare is bolstered by state-of-the-art medical technology and research that includes 60 on-site lasers, as well as diagnostic and therapeutic ultrasound, radiofrequency, and robotic-assisted surgical treatments that can turn back the aging process. Fast forward to today, and Balbera acknowledges that much has changed over the past two decades, “The industry has become electronic, cold and impersonal,” he said. The Magic City’s Cuban residents launched Carnaval Miami in 1978 to teach younger members of the community about their heritage. Since then, the festival has grown into a celebration of all Latino cultures. Things get a running start with a 5K through the streets of Little Havana followed by an arroz con pollo cookout. Cheer on local youth fútbol teams as they play five-on-five matches at Kendall Soccer Park, get your golf clubs out for the tournament at the Country Club of Miami, or soak up strategy from the contestants in the domino tournament at Maximo Gomez Park. And whether you prefer the beat of merengue, reggaeton, salsa, hiphop, pop, or Latin jazz, you’ll find your groove at the upscale Carnaval on the Mile jazz street festival or at Calle Ocho, a buzzing block party that draws 800,000 to the heart of Little Havana for a full day of dancing, ethnic food, and kids’ activities. ¡Qué divertido! carnavalmiami.com MARCH 7–8 COUPEVILLE, WASHINGTON
Go Whale Watching
For some of the best California gray whale watching the West Coast has to offer, head two hours north of Seattle for the 44th annual Dana Point Festival of Whales. Every year in late November, the 35-ton marine mammals begin their migration from Alaska, passing by the seaside town of Coupeville as they cruise toward warmer waters off the coast of Mexico. For a good view, stake out a post in Dana Point Headlands Conservation Park—or hitch a ride with an offshore tour to see the whales up close. The breathtaking creatures may be the main attraction, but the festival offers plenty of other activities. Those wanting to dive

deeper into marine biology may attend lectures by local experts like Capt. Todd Mansur, lead naturalist for Dana Wharf Whale Watching, and Dr. Lei Lani Stelle of the University of the Redlands. Other events include a classic car and vintage boat exhibit, a clam chowder cook-off, a rubber ducky derby, a kids’ fishing clinic, an authentic Polynesian luau, the Dana Point Fine Arts Association Show & Sale, and a sand-sculpting competition. festivalofwhales.com MARCH 20–APRIL 12 WASHINGTON, D.C.
See Spring in Bloom Each year, D.C.’s Tidal Basin experiences an explosion of pink as the hundreds of cherry trees lining the area begin to flower. The National Cherry Blossom Festival celebrates the annual springtime display with festivities dating back to 1927. Admire the blooms, and then head to events held across the nation’s capital including the swanky Pink Tie Party and the opening ceremony at Warner Theatre with musical performers hailing from both the U.S. and Japan. A family favorite, the National Cherry Blossom Festival Parade fills 10 blocks along Constitution Avenue with bands, floats, giant balloons, and musical performers, passing the Smithsonian National Museums of American History and Natural History, among other landmarks. For some high-flying fun, take to the skies on the National Mall with the Blossom Kite Festival, where you can watch the Hot Tricks Showdown and Rokkaku Battle. To keep news, directions, and event info at your fingertips, be sure to download the festival’s app. nationalcherryblossomfestival.org
step back in time—make plans to attend the annual Spring Fiesta. Since the ’30s, historic private homes in Uptown, the French Quarter, and the Garden District have opened their doors to visitors each spring. Many of the houses were built in the 19th century in Greek Revival style, with gable roofs, spiral staircases, and azalea-filled gardens and courtyards. Join one of the French Quarter walking tours
to learn more about the history of NOLA’s oldest neighborhood, and enjoy fine French-Creole cuisine with a sumptuous threecourse lunch at the famous Antoine’s Restaurant. Don’t miss the Night in Old New Orleans parade of horse-drawn carriages or the presentation of the Spring Fiesta Queen and her court, who promenade through Jackson Square adorned in antebellum attire. springfiesta.com

Nothing pairs better with Sonoma Valley wine than the artisanal cheeses made by farms and creameries in the region. To get your fill of fine dairy products, head to California’s Artisan Cheese Festival. Participate in pairing sessions like “What A Perfect Pair: Honey & Cheese” and “Pair If You Dare,” which considers the textures and flavors of pickled veggies, smoked shellfish, and tropical fruits. Or attend a seminar like “All About the Milk,” where Soyoung Scanlan of Petaluma’s Andante Dairy discusses the differences between cow, goat, and buffalo milks. Learn how to make cheeses like feta and mozzarella, and sample sweet and savory dishes from Bay Area chefs at The Best Bite cook-off. If you want to explore further, sign up for one of the many farm tours: Stops include the Point Reyes Farmstead Cheese Company in Point Reyes Station, known for its award-winning blue cheese, and the Achadinha Cheese Company in Petaluma, whose dairy goats’ diet is supplemented with alfalfa and brewer’s grain to give its cheese a unique flavor. artisancheesefestival.com MARCH 25–29 BOISE, IDAHO
Expand Your Interests Alternative- and indie-culture seekers rejoice at Treefort Music Fest, where the robust lineup includes TV on the Radio, Trampled by Turtles, De Lux, Sisters, and Hurray for the Riff Raff. Organizers call the event a festival of discovery, and it offers much more than the chance to find a new favorite band. Programming for all tastes abounds throughout Boise, including independent film screenings (Treefort Film Fest), performances by regional storytellers (Storyfort),

and a skateboard showcase (Skatefort). Swing by Hackfort for TED-style talks by local innovators; attend Yogafort for yoga, dance, and fitness classes; or sample the wares of over a dozen local breweries at Alefort. The first ever Comedyfort puts local comics in the spotlight at Liquid Lounge and hosts late-night dance parties at the venue. With all that time you’ll spend rubbing elbows with up-and-coming artists, filmmakers, and writers, you might just feel the spark of inspiration yourself. treefortmusicfest.com APRIL 25–26 NEW YORK CITY
Turn up the Heat You’ll find five-alarm fun at the NYC Hot Sauce Expo, an event that’s not for the faint of heart. Organizers narrowed a pool of over 300 entries down to a scorching lineup of 47 sauces. They’ll vie for the Screaming Mi Mi awards, where 13 categories include Fruit Based, Chipotle, All Natural, and Habenero. New to this year’s show, five industry greats will be inducted into the Hot Sauce Hall of Fame; nominees include John Hard (owner of CaJohns Hot Sauce) and the late Edmund McIlhenny (creator of Tabasco). If you can take the heat, watch the Smoking Ed’s Carolina Reaper Eating Contest, where contestants have 60 seconds to scarf down as many of the world’s hottest peppers as they can (the Reaper packs quite a punch with more than 1.5 million Scoville units). Hot sauce tastings, spicy-food vendors, and the Bloody Mary Mix Down, featuring the Big Apple’s best bartenders round out the offerings. at Churchill Downs for the Kentucky Derby, another chase unfolds on the Ohio River. At the Great Steamboat Race, two of the country’s last remaining steamboats, the Belle of Louisville and the Belle of Cincinnati, face off to see who will go home with the coveted Silver Antlers trophy. But it’s not just a contest to see which vessel can cross the finish line first: Their crews must complete a series of tasks both on land and in the water, and the team who scores the most points is declared the winner. Rules for this year’s race will be announced closer to the event date, but previous competitions have involved “jousting” with inflatable weapons and retrieving a buoy. Cheer from the shore, or hitch a ride aboard either ship. kdf.org APRIL 30–MAY 3 CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS

America’s oldest university shows its creative side at the Harvard Arts First Festival, where student and faculty talent is showcased with more than 200 recitals, exhibits, and screenings. The fest kicks off with a ceremony hosted by actor and alum John Lithgow, where Damian Woetzel will receive the Harvard Arts Medal for his work as a dancer and his leadership in the arts community. The Performance Fair hosts courtyard productions in the newly reopened Harvard Art Museums. This year, in conjunction with the National Civil War Project, the festival commemorates the 150th anniversary of the end of the War Between the States; highlights include the remounting of “Deep Wounds” by Brian Knep, an interactive video installation honoring alums who died during the war, and a choral performance of Ralph Vaughan Williams’ “Dona Nobis Pacem” at the intimate Sanders Theatre. ofa.fas.harvard.edu

The Card that Rewards You Being a Rapid Rewards Visa Cardmember comes with benefits.
HAVING A BALL
Rangers fans met Adrian Beltre at a Rapid Rewards Access Event.
With the Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards Visa credit card, Cardmembers earn points not only by flying on Southwest but also by simply making purchases with their card. Redeeming those points goes far beyond flights too, thanks to Rapid Rewards Access Events, a program where Cardmembers can cash in points for “bucket list” experiences or getaways with a special friend or family member. Rapid Rewards Access Events give Rapid Rewards Credit Cardmembers opportunities to participate in exclusive experiences ranging from Cirque du Soleil shows to Caribbean vacations. Cardmembers can use Rapid Rewards Points to bid on experiences through online auctions, or they can snag one of the “redeem now” packages (which often sell out in a matter of minutes) on southwest.com/morerewards. Cardmember experiences have included a VIP Ski Retreat at Montage Deer Valley resort in Park City, Utah; golf getaways alongside pros at exclusive courses; an MLB Spring Training dream experience; and behind-the-scenes visits to the California wine country. The events maximize the value of our Rapid Rewards Visa Card from Chase—a two-time Freddie Award winner in the
Best Customer Service and Best Affinity Credit Card categories. “Once in a lifetime opportunity.” “I felt like a rock star.” “These experiences make me proud to be a Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards Credit Cardmember!” These are just some of the praises we’ve heard from those who’ve experienced Rapid Rewards Access Events. But why just take their word for it? If you’re not already a Rapid Rewards Visa Cardmember and would like to learn more about the card and how you can use your points for these events, visit southwest.com/partners. And if you’re already a loyal Cardmember, stay in the know about Rapid Rewards Access Events by subscribing to the Rapid Rewards Email Update at southwest.com/RREU. —Kim Anslinger For a list of 2015 Rapid Rewards Visa Cardmember Access Events visit southwest.com/rapidrewards accessevents. COMMUNITY OUTREACH
Creating Smiles How one family benefited from Southwest’s Medical Transportation Grant Program
IN GOOD HANDS
Southwest helped Elijah get the treatment he needed.
In September 2013, my husband, Nate, and I got a call that changed our lives. Our adoption agency delivered the news that our future son, Elijah, was only three and a half weeks from his due date and that he had a cleft lip and palate. It was a short window of time to prepare to bring home a newborn, let alone research care options. While looking into treatments, I discovered nasoalveolar molding, or NAM, a specialized procedure that’s proven to have better outcomes for repair than typical procedures, resulting in fewer surgeries down the road. My heart sank, however, as I learned that no one in our home state of Indiana was trained to perform the procedure. I contacted New York University’s Institute of Reconstructive
Plastic Surgery, where NAM was developed. Even though it would require a considerable amount of travel, I thought it would be worth exploring the option. IRPS explained to me that Southwest Airlines has a Medical Transportation Grant Program that supports more than 90 nonprofit hospitals and medical transportation organizations by providing them complimentary, roundtrip tickets, which can then be given to patients and caregivers. IRPS’s supporting foundation, myFace, offered us the chance to travel to New York City weekly from Indianapolis. We spent the next four and a half months flying back and forth on Southwest. Each time we walked into the clinic, we felt at home and knew our son was receiving worldclass treatment. Nate and I will never be able to express how truly thankful we are to IRPS, myFace, and Southwest. The work these three organizations do together is transformative, both literally and figuratively. We never could have received the amazing level of care at IRPS without the incredible generosity of Southwest and myFace. Elijah is too young to understand now, but I can’t wait to tell him this story one day. He won’t remember these trips, but he will know the impact they had on his life. —Rebecca Evans

One Question
Alfre Woodard,
what’s one secret to a happy life?
Alfre Woodard plays the president of the United States on NBC’s State of Affairs.
PHOTOGRAPHY BY FABRIZIO MALTESE/CONTOUR BY GETTY IMAGES
My parents grew up in families of landowners and sharecroppers. Life on the land can really be the luck of the draw: Some years your crop won’t do well, and some years your neighbor’s will bottom out. So you have to take care of each other—not with leftovers but with the same things your own family is privileged to enjoy. It’s not charity; it’s what makes you human. We are all here to take care of each other, to give and to receive. Recognizing that and putting it into action is definitely an important part of living a happy life.
