Defining the Future of the Public Research University

UC San Diego Cultivating Tomorrow’s Leaders Education is the great equalizer, a powerful force for students from all backgrounds. The University of California, San Diego is playing a key role in transforming education through progressive K–12 outreach, innovative models for middle and high school learning, and STEAM education (science, technology, engineering, arts and math). Improving education at all levels supports our next generation of leaders as they prepare to address the planet’s most pressing issues, from battling disease to protecting our environment.

UC San Diego’s Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institution of Oceanography is the largest provider of ocean and earth-science education in the region. As part of its mission for K–12 outreach, the aquarium uses its resources to provide programs that teach learning skills and understanding of the planet.

Rommie Amaro, Ph.D., is equally devoted to battling infectious viruses and bacteria as she is to guiding the next generation of scientists. While working on models of proteins that will lead to new drugs, she launched BioChemCoRe, a new research camp designed to retain women in science, and mentored Eric Chen, winner of the 2013 Google Science Fair Grand Prize for his influenza research.

Changing Lives

Cecil Lytle 2015 Revelle Medalist

Inspired by a belief that education changed his future, world-renowned pianist Cecil Lytle co-founded The Preuss School UCSD, a charter school at UC San Diego for low-income students who strive to become the first in their families to graduate from college. Select graduates from Preuss—ranked as one of the nation’s best high schools—also receive financial support to attend UC San Diego through Lytle’s endowed scholarship.

Deliberate Practice

Hugh “Bud” Mehan, Ph.D. 2015 Revelle Medalist

For more than 20 years, sociology and education professor Hugh “Bud” Mehan, Ph.D., has linked research to practice. Mehan founded UC San Diego’s Center for Research on Educational Equity, Access, and Teaching Excellence (CREATE), which improves academic preparation of underrepresented students by partnering with K–12 schools. He works closely with educators to make informed decisions that ensure excellent educational opportunities are available to all children.

ennie Bowen Steed’s idea of finding love changed on a flight when she saw an ad for It’s Just Lunch, a personalized matchmaking service for busy professionals. Jennie had been divorced for two years, and

her time was focused on her career & family. The ad read like a good friend who could introduce her to single, professional men she wouldn’t have the opportunity to meet on her own. Today, Bowen Steed is married to

Where were you at in your life when you decided to join IJL?

grEg:

I’d been divorced for about two years, and it was a hectic time career wise. My company was in a transitional phase, and it demanded a lot of my time and effort, so I didn’t have time for much else.

JENNIE: I’d also been divorced about two years. Being a single mom and working full-time, it wasn’t a huge priority of mine to go out and do the legwork it took to meet someone; it felt like having another job, and I didn’t have time for that.

Favorite first date memories?

grEg: I was attracted to her right away. On the second date there was a real chemistry. Then it evolved very, very quickly. JENNIE:

When Greg and I started talking, I discovered we had similar careers. I remember the conversation was so easy and comfortable. When I shared my date feedback with my IJL matchmaker, I let her know that Greg and I had made arrangements to attend a big award dinner at his country club. The minute I walked in, I knew he was a consummate gentleman. I felt so cared for. He was attentive and made sure I was introduced to everyone.

How did IJL compare to your online dating experience?

grEg: Online dating isn’t easy, it’s work. I’ve got a full-time career; I didn’t need another job. With IJL they did everything for me. You’re busy with your career and everything else going on – IJL was just easier. The caliber of matches was much higher. JENNIE: I saw an ad for IJL on a flight and was contemplating whether I was interested when someone close to me mentioned it as an option. I thought

I’d try it because it sounded like having friends who could interview people for you so when you went on a date you would know there’s something about the two of you that someone thought would be a good fit.

What would you tell a friend who was interested in IJL but was tentative about making the investment?

What's the most challenging part of working remotely from a dating perspective?

6 in 10 people say not meeting people as often

grEg:

At the end of the day what is your end goal? Then I’d ask, what’s the cost of being happy worth to you? The kinds of people who choose IJL aren’t fooling around. It’s not someone on the Internet just looking to meet a ton of people and date up a storm. It was definitely worth it for me.

Best part about dating thru IJL?

grEg: Besides choosing all my matches I would say the scheduling of my dates. They call you and ask what your schedule is like, so you don’t have to worry about it. If I said I was available Wednesday or Thursday this week and Sunday next week they would find a way to fit dating into my schedule. What sort of activities did you enjoy while you were dating?

JENNIE: We love to be outside. I also love going to places I’ve never been before. He loves to drive and take me places – whether that’s going to the beach or going to the mountains or some random lake that’s hidden away. How has your life changed since you met?

grEg: It is totally different than it was. I would say that there was a point in time when I felt a little bit lost. Everything has completely turned around. Every day I wake up, and I enjoy the day. I enjoy being around her, the kids, and our home. Life is just better. It’s Just Lunch has been matching busy singles since 1991. We started UNTUCKit because we had trouble finding shirts that looked good untucked. Shirts aren’t designed that way: they’re too long and sloppy untucked. It’s a deceptively difficult look to get right. So we decided to make a better shirt for those who want to wear their shirts untucked. We would make a better shirt for the untucked man. A casual shirt fit for comfort and not convention; designed to fall at the perfect length. An ‘untucked’ shirt. Visit us at 129 Prince Street in SOHO, NYC.

GARY’S GREETING

Taking Care of Each Other The challenge for any company is that a culture will develop on its own, simply by how people behave and relate to one another. It’s important, even critical, to be intentional in defining what the culture is. It’s just as important to lay out what it is not. A healthy culture must also encompass the business as a whole. For example, you can cultivate an environment focused on Safety and high performance, but it may not be a fun place to work. Likewise, you can focus on having a fun place to work, but that won’t last if the company is not achieving results. Southwest Airlines is pretty special because our Culture really developed in tandem with our Company’s expe-

riences early on. Our original Employees put their hearts and souls into making Southwest a formidable competitor, and that foundational spirit has remained alive and strong— but not by chance. We have spent an enormous amount of time, energy, and resources intentionally nurturing and protecting our Culture. We have a Culture Department that oversees a Companywide Culture Committee comprised of Employees from across our system. We also have local Culture Committees at all of our locations, as well as Culture Engagement Specialists who work with all departments. And our Internal Customer Care Team provides Hospitality and care for our Employees during important events in their lives. Of course, we celebrate just about everything you could imagine. We have Southwest Rallies in a handful of cities across our system to talk about our collective goals for each year. We also have an annual Spirit party, where we come together for the sole purpose of having fun with each other. I could go on and on, but you get the point—our Culture doesn’t just happen. It is up to all 48,000 of our Employees to make it happen. In return, our foremost commitment as a Company is to take care of our People and our Customers. For me, that is both a personal responsibility and a high honor. Thanks for allowing us to share our Culture with you today.

Gary Kelly Chairman, President, and CEO Southwest Airlines

PHOTOGRAPHY BY STEPHEN KELLER

At Southwest Airlines, we’ve long been famous for our unique and special Culture. It really comes down to this: Southwest has always asked three basic things of our Employees— work hard, treat people with respect, and have a positive attitude (and in all of those things, practice the Golden Rule). Our Culture is a source of pride for me and our 48,000 Family Members. I’m asked about it often, and many want to know how we nurture and sustain it even as we grow. It’s really a fascinating question, because so many elements can play a role in an organization’s culture; there’s no single formula.

YOU MADE OUR DAY

CHEERS!

Dear Southwest,

My husband, Manny, and I flew to Seattle for our 30th anniversary. I had the idea to have people on our flight sign cards for my husband, so l secretly gave a flight attendant the cards and asked if he’d pass them along. After we landed, he handed me the cards, which I tucked under my arm so Manny wouldn’t see. The captain, Larry Thomas, came to greet us while a flight attendant handed Manny a bottle of Champagne! I told my husband I had one more surprise and gave him the cards. He said, “These are really great sentiments, but l don’t recognize anyone. Are they your friends at work?” I said, “No. These are from the passengers and crew on our flight.” The cards were filled wallto-wall, front and back. In addition to the captain, first officer Jeff Snyder and flight attendants Rob Swafford, Wayne Montminy, and Lilly Homan signed the cards. Fun stuff! —Jan DeFranco

As I was waiting to board my flight in the terminal of the Greater Rochester International Airport, I noticed a WWII bomber parked across the airfield. Capt. Lance Waite walked by and looked through the window at it too. I remarked it would be nice if he could take me for a ride in it. He agreed and went on his way. I saw him again as I exited the plane in Baltimore—he’d been the pilot. As I was waiting to board the second leg of my trip, Lance came up, sat next to me, and jokingly asked if I was following him. He noticed my Vietnam veteran’s hat and asked about my service. We talked for 10 minutes or so. Then after takeoff, a flight attendant came by and told me the pilot wanted to buy me a drink. I was surprised and moved. I enjoyed that beer more than any I have had in a long time. I would never have expected such nice, personal, self-initiated involvement. I am so pleased to have met him. —George Beam BUDDY SYSTEM

My niece Lisa was traveling with her sons, including 17-year-old Chucky, who is autistic and the sweetest kid. At the airport for the flight home from Atlanta, Chucky refused to get on the rail car. The doors closed, and he was left behind. Lisa contacted the police, and they were able to locate him. But she’d missed her flight. Southwest ILLUSTRATION BY DANIEL DOWNEY

employees went above and beyond to get her on another flight. They gave her food vouchers, dried her tears, and played with her children. When it was time to board the second flight, Chucky refused to get on. Southwest customer service manager Karen Stripling booked them on another flight for the next morning. I took them back to the airport, and upon our arrival Chucky became overwhelmed. But I was able to calm him down and was allowed to go with them to the gate. Before boarding, Chucky had a mini meltdown, so he and I just walked. When we got back to the gate, Karen asked for my ID, went to the counter, and came back with a “turn around” ticket, which allowed me to go to Boston with them and fly back immediately to Atlanta. Chucky was nervous, but we made it to Boston! We are a large family, and all of us are spreading the word about Chucky’s experience with Southwest Airlines. —Linda Lindsey ALONG FOR THE RIDE

Customer service agent Keri Hansen went beyond the normal call of duty.

F2_ymod_gc.indd 20

We were stranded in Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport after our flight was cancelled due to weather. Keri was manning the ticket counter when a herd of disgruntled passengers rushed forward to plead their cases. Keri kept her cool under the barrage. We ended up making arrangements to travel on a different carrier out of a nearby airport. We understood that we would be reimbursed for our cancelled flight but felt put out due to the cancellation. Keri offered to give us a ride to the other airport. She wasn’t sure when her shift would end but promised us if we were still there, she would drive us. Keri was supposed to finish her shift at 9:30 p.m. but worked six hours of overtime due to the cancelled flights, finishing at 3:30 a.m. She was good to her word: She found us in the lobby and drove us to our new destination. She lives the mission of Southwest Airlines by providing the highest quality of customer service, delivered with an overwhelming sense of warmth, friendliness, individual pride, and company spirit. —Joseph Westover and Timothy Jennings

SPEEDY RECOVERY

I would like to compliment customer service agent Diana Nava. When I left my computer on the plane, she took my call, found the computer, and drove 20 miles to my hotel so I would have it for work the next day. She is one special person. As a frequent flyer, I see her all the time. She is always warm and makes me feel like family. Southwest has a gem in Diana! —Eric Pines THAT’S MY JAM

When I went through airport security, I forgot about a jar of jam that was over the amount of liquids and gels allowed for a carry-on. I walked back to curbside check-in to see if they could locate my luggage, but it was too late. However, at the inside check-in desk a customer service agent named Cynthia Vogel made my day. OUR STAR

“Every day is a learning experience. Be willing to learn and adapt to change.” —MICHAEL YU, CUSTOMER SERVICE AGENT

Providing excellent service is part of Sacramento-based Customer Service Agent Michael Yu’s DNA. While working at a car dealership, he heard about the many opportunities at Southwest and decided that he would thrive in a career with the airline. Nine years later, Michael sees each day as an opportunity to improve. And from returning a Customer’s misplaced iPod to ensuring that Passengers always receive great service in a timely manner, he goes the extra mile. Michael, thank you for all that you do for Southwest and our Customers. —Kaitlin Stransky, Operational Communication MEMOR ABLE MOMENT

GREAT EXPECTATIONS

“A Coworker and I traveled on Southwest’s inaugural flight to San Juan, Puerto Rico. The whole gate area was a party, but it didn’t stop there. When we got off the plane, we received a grand welcome from the locals.”

“I’m waiting for the announcement of Southwest’s next international destination. My goal is to be on all of the inaugural flights.” INSIDER TIP “The city I visit most is San Diego. I always make sure to stop at Phil’s BBQ and my favorite beach, La Jolla.”

To thank Michael for his work and dedication, Penn & Teller is proud to give him two tickets to see the show in Las Vegas. Congratulations, Michael! PHOTOGRAPHY BY CARL COSTAS

THE A-LIST

“When I think of Southwest, I think convenient, ontime, and rewarding.” —DAVID KOUBA, CO-OWNER, TOWER TECHNOLOGY, INC. Just like Southwest Airlines, David Kouba connects people to what’s important to them. While Southwest gets Customers from point A to point B, David analyzes cellphone towers and their performance to ensure that people are connected to family, friends, and work associates through their mobile device networks. David travels all over the country. Most of his business trips are quick ones—he sometimes leaves his home in Kansas City, Missouri, and returns the same day—and he depends on Southwest’s ontime service to get the job done. —Alyssa Eliasen, Media Relations FLIGHT PERK “I love the Companion Pass, which I earned by using the Southwest Chase Visa credit card and taking a few flights a year. I can bring a family member or a friend to enjoy the trip with me.” BEST ADVICE “Get busy living; you know what the alternative is.”

TOP DESTINATION

“Portland, Oregon. There is so much to do around the area—Mount Hood for skiing, the Columbia River Gorge with Multnomah Falls for some of the best hiking and scenery, and the wineries to the south for the best pinot noir in the country.” FAMILY TIME “I coached my kids in football, soccer, basketball, and baseball. Now that they’re older, we still play golf and tennis— I usually lose.”

from the editor

Dear Reader,

The concert lasted a minute, maybe two, and then the escalator’s rhythm fell out from the boy’s tune. He went silent. I ran down to the station and boarded the subway with a smile so ridiculous that passengers leaned away. You have to understand, I’m not the type to stand and moon at magic moments. If a leprechaun sat in my path offering a pot of gold, I’d trip over him. In the years since, I’ve built up my song playlists, attended concerts, sung hymns, and enjoyed them all. But none made me quite so happy as that Metro station song. What made me stop? I’ve come to believe that, in a mysterious way, whatever struck me dumb that day was as close as I’ve come to the sacred.

Experts can make happiness sound like something you must accumulate with skill, like wellchosen stocks. True, plenty of research shows you can make yourself happier by practicing mindfulness, counting your blessings, doing good deeds, and favoring experiences (travel!) over acquisitions. But a moment in my own life made me realize that happiness can come out of nowhere and just smack you upside the head. It happened years ago, in Washington, D.C., as I was rushing to a meeting. I was about to run down the escalator at the Farragut North Metro station when a sound stopped me: “Star!” It came from a young boy hawking the Washington Star newspaper. He called the name in a beautiful soprano, his voice rising a third of an octave—sta-arrr! sta-arrr! The boy sang in rhythm with the escalator’s mechanical shuffle, and the tune fell in harmony with the beeps of fare cards passing through the stiles in the station below. Someone jostled me. I seemed to be the only one to hear the music.

Dear Editor,

It was with great awe that I read your article “The Original Rhythm” [October 2015]. I am a family doctor, the only one in town. While working the hospital emergency room on a warm August afternoon, I had to attend to a high school athlete with a lethal head injury. A few days later, I was struck by his grandmother’s post on social media that said her grandson’s body was going to help more than 150 people through organ and tissue donation. Still, the notion of being able to hear his heart again was one I had never considered. I knew that I must give a copy of your article to the boy’s parents. It’s the most I have ever been moved while simply sitting on an airplane, and I write this through tears. Roger Tobias LYONS, KANSAS

I just finished reading “Life Aquatic” by Ashley Harrell from the November 2015 issue. Such a beautifully written article. It made me picture every single site the author and Diana were talking about in the deep-sea dive. I can’t wait to go to Costa Rica and experience this amazing ride. Also, Diana’s life comes out beautifully through the article, and it gets

across a strong message that no matter what happens, it’s all about taking the plunge in life! Always a pleasure to read some good material on a flight.

BLAST FROM THE PAST

SPARK OF AN IDEA

While reading “The Way of the Basque” [November 2015], I was nearly brought to tears with memories. My full-blooded Basque mother took her children and grandchildren to Reno for the festival celebrating the unveiling of the Basque Sheepherder Monument. I had nearly forgotten the wonderful memories. Both of my non-Basque brothers-inlaw were given honorary status as Basques. My mother was delighted! I believe your “outsider” views on the politics were perfectly stated. Hopefully other non-Basques will be educated on the amazingly colorful culture; the strikingly unusual isolation; and an 80-year-old political problem, which, if it occurred today, would have brought down the wrath of the Western world. Thank you for the flashback.

I thoroughly enjoyed “The Original Rhythm.” You might say I have taken it to heart. At unexpected times I have found the concept of using a heartbeat in music rolling through my thoughts. I had an idea that I hope you might share with Brian Schreck. I believe his idea of using heartbeats as the baseline rhythm of music could be used to soothe the sick—especially premature infants who have listened to their mother’s heartbeat yet must live without it as they struggle to mature outside the womb. Melodies set to the beat of their own mother’s heartbeat might stimulate the brain and strengthen both body and soul. (I have nothing more than mother’s intuition to back up my idea, so take it for what it’s worth.) Thank you for sharing that story. I’m sure it has moved countless people.

Thank you for your amazing story “The Original Rhythm.” The story arc was incredible, blending history with heartbreak and wonderment. As a pastor, I served briefly in Houston in the early ’70s, when Dr. Denton Cooley’s work made headlines. I’ve sat with many brokenhearted folks; preached often about “the heart”; held the hands of a mom making the organ donation decision for her too-soon-deceased daughter; celebrated reclaimed life with 70-year-olds blessed with a pig or cow’s heart valve; and dreamed of the life that might inhabit other regions of our universe. For a host of other reasons too I was deeply moved by the topics you touched on in “The Original Rhythm.”

Workers surely had a blast as they removed 450,000 tons of granite to create the South Dakota landmark, which turns 75 this year. (Details were drilled and chiseled by hand.) But the final product turned out differently than planned. “The original thought was to depict Old West legends like Wild Bill Hickok, Lewis and Clark, and American Indian leader Red Cloud, says Jay Vogt, director of the South Dakota State Historical Society. But sculptor Gutzon Borglum vetoed that idea to push for the presidential angle. Another change: The figures were to be carved from head to waist, but the work was declared finished in 1941 after funding dried up. You could say they were caught between a rock and a hard place.

PLAY Drink

MAKE IT ← In a cocktail shaker, combine ½ ounce pickled beets, eight to 10 mint leaves, and ¾ ounce fresh lemon juice; muddle until beets are reduced to a rough paste. Add 1 ½ ounces London dry gin, 1 ounce Aperol, ¾ ounce Canton ginger liqueur liqueur, and ice. Shake vigorously for about 10 seconds. Using a fine-mesh strainer, double-strain into an ice-filled glass and garnish with a generous sprig of mint.

ORDE R TH IS

Beet Down

Scan the menu at Root Down in Denver, and it won’t take long for your eyes to settle on the roasted baby beet salad. The dish embodies the farm-to-table movement in a single forkful: Pickled beets bring bright acidity, while peppery arugula and the creamy tang of Colorado goat cheese play supporting roles. “I thought, I have to find a way to incorporate these flavors into a cocktail,” says beverage director Mike Henderson. So out came the arugula, and in its place went a pile of mint and Aperol for herbaceousness. Ginger liqueur adds both sweetness and bite, and London dry gin ties everything together. As for what to pair it with, Henderson has just the thing. Now you can tell your mother that, yes, you did eat your vegetables.

PLAY Eat

Pickling It’s easy to think of pickles as this one-dimensional idea: brined cucumbers eaten out of the jar, or maybe on a burger, or tossed into a Bloody Mary. Cure in Pittsburgh, though, dismisses that idea entirely. In the winter that could mean a radicchio salad with pickled sunchokes; in the summer it’s a white boudin and crispy pickled green beans. Right now the menu standout is a Cynar-cured Arctic char—as the restaurant name indicates, pickling isn’t the only form of preservation here—topped with rose-pickled rhubarb. If you’re a stickler for the cucumber variety, they’ve got those too. But you might have to suffer through a salmon tartare or some smoked trout to get them. A pity indeed.

The oval-shaped device, which comes in three colors, is sleek enough to showcase in your living room while still delivering on its moisture-infusing promise. Yes, it’ll cost you, but consider this: Pre-mist, every water droplet is zapped twice with UV light, killing 99 percent of bacteria that would otherwise be floating around in your space. Point of View

Fishing With Frank

How a man and his pet tiger taught the author of Big Fish how to become a writer. / BY DANIEL WALLACE

W

hen i was 24 years old, I asked my brother-in-law William to take me fishing. I had just bought a computer and started writing fiction, and I wanted to have “experiences.” I read once that Hemingway fished, so I felt it was something I should do too. Up until then, for most of the quarter of a century I’d been alive, I had stayed indoors. I was an avid indoorsman, an aficionado of hot showers, soft pillows, and central air. William was the kind of man Hemingway would have liked, the sort who could be dropped into the jungle with no more than a half-chewed piece of bubble gum and the pop-top from a cola can and recreate Western civilization. He was brilliant. He climbed mountains, kayaked rivers, 42 southwest february 2016

F1_essay_KT.indd 42

and slept in trees, and he wrote books about it. He let me borrow one of his rods, and we got up early and bought some night crawlers at a place called Johnny’s. Night crawlers are huge, prehistoric-looking worms, worms with muscle, worms that can arm wrestle. A friend of William’s had a pond stocked with bass and bream. We took the poles and night crawlers and an ice chest big enough to hold two six-packs and fished, and when the six packs were gone we were done fishing whether we’d caught anything or not. The pond’s owner was named, let’s say, Frank. Frank was 35, a deep-sea diver. He explored the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of North Carolina looking for shipwrecks. He found some, too, and he wrote books about that. He was a big man with long black hair and ILLUSTRATION BY SAM KALDA

a mustache in the style favored by Mongol invaders, and he wore the kind of glasses that turned dark in the sun. He also knew something about computers, and in 1984 very few people did. William and Frank knew each other because both of them were adventurers. They were men who saw the world as something to be a part of, something to be fathomed through experience. Their experience in the world was something

F1_essay_KT.indd 44

I never asked to get into the cage with the tiger. Other writers might have, but I didn’t. I wanted to have without actually having to experience it. Frank never fished with us, but after our third or fourth time out there he joined us for a cigarette. I didn’t smoke. I’d quit a few years back, but I enjoyed standing in

tobacco clouds. I lived for this sort of secondhand pleasure. “Your brother-in-law told me you were a writer,” he said. “Not really,” I said. “I’m learning. Giving it a shot.” He nodded. I felt him take my estimation behind his dark glasses, giving me the once over, as if he could determine the cut of my jib just by looking. “I want to show you something,” he said. He took us about 20 yards away from the pond, and we edged through a copse of thick pine until we came to a clearing where there was a large metal cage. Inside the cage was a Bengal tiger, all golden brown with slashing black stripes and I-Will-EatYou eyes. It paced from one end of the cage to the other. “Can you go in there?” I asked. “In the cage? I can,” he said. “But just me. Anybody else, she’d rip you apart. Want to give it a shot?” He smiled malevolently. “No thanks,” I said. It was against the law to have a tiger, he said, but the law was a new one, and since Frank had the tiger before the law was passed he was allowed to keep it. The tiger was grandfathered in. I never asked to get into the cage with the tiger. Some other writer might have, but I didn’t, and I wondered if that meant I was going to become a Not Very Good Writer. We did catch some fish though. Most of them we threw back because they were only slightly bigger than the worm. But I did haul in a bass that weighed over a pound and William taught me how to kill it, scale it, gut it, and cook it. This seemed like a great experience and one I could easily write about, but this is the first time I’ve mentioned it in print.

1/4/16 12:01 PM

At home I was writing about other stuff. It’s hard to remember exactly what kind of stuff; a broken heart, probably. I was writing on an IBM XT, which had 128 KB of RAM and a monochrome monitor. When you turned it on, you were greeted by the flashing and vaguely unsettling C> prompt. To engage the text program you had to insert a floppy disk into the slot. I had amassed a hundred or so pages, which impressed me. I was impressed with myself because there was no one else around to be impressed for me. The only problem is that I didn’t know anything about computers, so when something went wrong with it I was stymied. But Frank knew things, so I began to use him as a resource. The guy who had a pond and a tiger was also the guy who shone a light on the dark and scary technological path on which I was so often lost. One day, something very bad happened. I couldn’t access my files. I called Frank and asked him what to do. He was cool, as usual. No problem, he said, all I needed to do was erase my “temporary files” (whatever those were), and he told me how simple it was to do it: at the C> prompt, after typing “erase,” simply type star dot star [*.*], he said. I did exactly what he told me to. Then I tried to find my writing. But there was nothing there. My computer was completely empty. “This is weird,” I said. “My stuff is gone. Everything.” “Oh,” he said, casually. “I meant to say star dot tmp [*.tmp]. You just erased all the data on your computer. Completely. But you have a backup, right?” Long pause on my end as I found the breath to speak. “Of course,” I said. But of course I didn’t. Three years a nonsmoker, I walked across the street and bought a pack of cigarettes and reacquainted myself with the joys

F1_essay_KT.indd 45

of tobacco. I thought of quitting altogether that day—not smoking, but writing. I was still young; I could do something else. Maybe this was a sign. Then again, Hemingway himself actually kept all his stories in a suitcase, which were once accidentally left in a train station in Paris and stolen, gone forever. He had to begin again, with nothing but a few well-sharpened pencils. That’s the real adventure, I

realized: bringing these unruly words together into sentences, and the sentences into stories. This is the dark and unexplored forest, the reef where ships sank, the wild animal secreted behind tall pines. So I went back to it. I got into the cage with the tiger. From rock star to Hollywood A-lister to indie darling, Jack Black has defied convention at every turn. So what is he searching for? What makes him truly happy?

jk nickell: You spent a good deal of your early career roughing it. jack black: There were lots of highs and lows. I was in and out of my mom’s house all through the ’90s. I’d book a gig, and then I’d say, ‘All right, Mom, I’m all growed up.

I got a job, and I’m going to get my own apartment.’ I’d live there for a few months, and there’d be no more gigs, and I’d go, ‘Mom, is it cool if I stay with you for another couple months? I just gotta get my sea legs.’ jn: There’s this idea that artists have to be poor and struggling to create meaningful work. Was that true for you? jb: It seems like you could say that about any profession, really. The leaders in most industries came from humble beginnings, and their financial future was not secure. There’s something about desperation, a survival instinct, that leads to great things. So, yeah, basically my career is over now because I’m way too comfortable. jn: Do you really believe that? jb: I definitely feel like I’ve hit a plateau. I’d be happy if my tombstone was just like, ‘He was in School of Rock. He did a good job.’ It’s a double-edged sword, though. The quality of your work can also get better because of the material you have access to. jn: Like with Bernie a few years back, everybody was raving about your performance. jb: Well, thank you. That was an example of something I did basically for free because I wanted to. That’s the kind of freedom that kind of career offers. jn: Are you more interested in complex, nuanced roles now? jb: I am really interested in the darkness and light combination, but I also like to party down on something that’s just hugely entertaining, like Kung Fu Panda.

jn: Do you have to tap into a different part of yourself? jb: Po [the main character, played by Jack] is definitely more naïve than me. He’s basically just me as a kid. And Po is still a kid even though we’re on part three. Time moves slower in Kung Fu Panda land—he hasn’t grown a big-panda mustache. That would’ve been cool, but they don’t wanna let him grow up. I was like, ‘C’mon guys, let’s let him have some panda babies.’ And they were like, ‘Not yet, Jack.’ jn: Is it fun for you to channel that youthful perspective? jb: Yeah, but it presents its own challenges. It’s best when it’s fun, and there’s an art to finding fun. You can’t just say, ‘Hey, don’t forget to have fun!’ You have to find it, and sometimes it’s hiding. jn: Has that gotten harder? jb: Maybe a little bit. The older I get, I have to dig a little deeper. But I still enjoy it, and at the end of the day it is a childish profession—pretending to be other people. If you let yourself, you can get a little selfconscious about that childish game. jn: How do you view your comedy? Are you providing people temporary relief from life’s struggles? jb: I just approach roles that resonate with me, and I happen to feel that way more about comedies than dramas. I’ve actually been getting into producing. I don’t need to be on screen anymore. I’d like to put on a show and have other people be brilliant and hide in the shadows and shed a tear—of pride and joy.

ACK BLACK has just ordered his second dinner. He’s stationed for the evening at a room in Miami’s Mandarin Oriental hotel, and claims the chef downstairs is the best, man man.. “He made me some crazy fried teriyaki chicken thing. I don’t know what it was called. It’s not teriyaki. It’s like chick katori—I don’t know. It was so good I wanted to order another dish to see if he could make two dishes that good.” The calories are beside the point. He’s testing the chef—can he replicate this thing that brought me joy? This trait, his affection for experimentation, has quietly defined his career, beginning in the late ’90s when his band, Tenacious D, catapulted him to the top of both the rock and comedy worlds. That turned into a slew of starring Hollywood turns, but the big-budget stuff bored him, so he veered back toward the indie scene. Today he’s in Miami shooting a climate change documentary; he’s got a cartoon TV series in the works; and, now with a few boys of his own, he’s embraced kids’ flicks: Goosebumps last fall and Kung Fu Panda 3, out now. He hasn’t stopped experimenting, which is another way of saying he hasn’t stopped pursuing projects that inspire real joy. “I’ve got a lot of pies in a lot of ovens, and a lot of fingers in a lot of pies.”

jb: I like to think that I’ve gotten more kids into kung fu than Bruce Lee. I’m not saying I’m better than Bruce Lee, but parents tell me all the time that their kids started taking martial arts classes because of it. Entertaining kids is every bit as satisfying as entertaining grownups. I kind of prefer it, in a way.

jn: What’s appealing about doing a kids’ film? 48 southwest february 2016

Happy Trails /

BY MIKE DARLING ILLUSTRATION BY GIORDANO POLONI/COLAGENE

A step-by-step guide to feeling better today, starting the moment you wake up. The shortest routes aren’t always the most stress-free, suggests a wave of new research. If you’re willing to go a little out of your way, your well-being could reap the benefits. Reroute your daily coordinates along these lines to enjoy a healthier, happier life.

PL AN THAT FISHING TRIP Pick one thing you’re going to splurge on, and don’t make it an even bigger TV. A 2015 Journal of Consumer Psychology study found that experiences (anything from rock climbing to cooking classes) make us happier than buying material items. And if it’s an excursion, spend some time planning. Researchers say that the anticipation of a trip alone is enough to dramatically lift your mood. CHUG SOME H 2 O A drop of water could refresh your disposition. A 2012 study in the British Journal of Nutrition found a link between bad moods and dehydration: The thirstier people were, the grumpier they felt. Glug a glass or two first thing in the morning.

STEP OUTSIDE And avoid pavement. A study in the Journal of Environmental Psychology found that being outdoors—specifically in nature—can have a “vitalizing effect” on people, which translates to more energy and even increased resistance to disease. No time to hit the trails? Change your iPhone wallpaper to a National Park setting; simply looking at natural scenes can help you achieve a similarly energizing effect.

STOP NET WORKING

DO NOTHING “Research shows that we are at our most creative when we are not doing anything,” says Emma Seppälä, author of The Happiness Track. To achieve breakthroughs, she says, you really need moments of idleness.

Instead, build actual relationships: “There’s this view out there that to get ahead you have to focus on yourself— to look out for No. 1—but research has actually demonstrated that people who are more generous and have good relationships with others end up being more successful,” says The Happiness Track’s Seppälä. “And our greatest source of happiness come from our relationships.”

SMILE LIKE YOU MEAN IT You’re running late, and the barista just served you decaf by mistake. Power through it by thinking about anything that brings you genuine joy— like that finger painting your kid made for you or the happy hour you have planned. Thoughts like these can translate to real smiles, which, unlike forced ones, lift your mood, report Michigan State researchers.

HIT THE GYM Use your lunch break to your advantage. In a 2008 British study, researchers analyzed 200 people who alternated between working out and remaining relatively sedentary throughout the week. On workout days, the employees reported feeling significantly happier, saying that the exercise helped relieve stress and improve focus.

REVISE YOUR WORKOUT PLAYLIST Time to drop the Adele-heavy set. Researchers at the University of Missouri found that playing upbeat music can lead to a rush of mood-boosting dopamine. If you’re too busy to cobble together your own lineup, streaming services like Spotify Premium ($10 per month) offer curated up-tempo lists.

DO SOMETHING SELFLESS Maybe it’s an hour spent walking pups at the SPCA, building a home with Habitat for Humanity, or hosting a Wounded Warriors event. Pick a way to give back that you’ll legitimately enjoy, and it could translate to a happier, longer life, according to a 2013 review in BMC Public Health. february 2016 southwest 51

hite plumes of smoke trail behind the hulking yellow water truck as it pulls away from St. Bonaventure Indian Mission in Thoreau, New Mexico. Easing into second gear, Darlene Arviso rumbles past the trailer park where she has lived with her family for three years, past St. Bonaventure’s Catholic grade school where, earlier this morning, she dropped off the students from her bus route, over the bridge spanning the train tracks, and onto the I-40 frontage road. She heads east, the horizon tinged purple and royal blue. Through the windshield the open landscape rolls for mile after mile while the red sandstone cliffs of the Continental Divide tower to the north. Ten miles down the road, Darlene takes the turnoff for the community of Baca, water sloshing over the sides of the tank as asphalt gives way to dust and gravel. She comes to a stop behind a blue house next to four plastic 55-gallon barrels. With the truck still running, she hops out, unhooks a bulky, 25-foot hose from the back, and drags it over

F1_Happy_WaterLady_DWR.indd 56

to the barrels. After filling them, she bends to lift the rusty metal lid of a pipe jutting from the ground, which leads to a 1,000-gallon subterranean tank connected to the house’s kitchen and bathroom. Thirty minutes later the tank is full, and she’s on her way. The average American uses 100 gallons of water per day and would single-handedly drain that tank in

just 10 days. But here on the Navajo Nation people average 7 gallons a day. It will be about a month before Darlene returns to replenish this family’s supply. Darlene, a reserved 51-year-old with a wry sense of humor, delivers to more than 250 rural households surrounding Thoreau on the Navajo Nation, the largest, most populous American Indian reservation. Spanning 27,000 square miles across New Mexico, Arizona, and Utah, it was established in 1868 and is now home to more than 170,000 people. Many of the households Darlene serves completely lack in-home access to running water, a reality for 40 percent of the reservation’s residents. Those lucky enough to own indoor taps still rely on her because the mineral-heavy water that flows from their pipes isn’t suitable for drinking. “I stopped wearing white when I moved out here because the water turned my socks yellow,” says Chris Halter, St. Bonaventure’s executive director. “When you drank it,

it felt like you had a stomach full of lead.” Just after noon, Darlene parks in front of a gray trailer house, a Navajo-language radio station booming through her speakers.

well with his siblings and the neighbors’ kids. Someone would push a wheelbarrow filled with empty containers. “It was kind of fun,” he recalls. They enjoyed playing in the area around the windmill. When

Darlene delivers to as many as 15 families per day.

Half-listening, she pulls out a weathered clipboard and begins committing to paper her mental records from the morning’s deliveries: P. Yazzie – 1,200. D. Yazzie – 165. J.V. – 55. O.M. – 275. E. Long – 55. Math was her favorite subject in school; numbers always clicked for her. With the deliveries she’s made so far, she calculates that there’s still enough in the truck’s 3,500-gallon tank to visit six more houses before she has to turn back for her afternoon school bus shift. A muffled clatter draws her eyes from the clipboard, prompting her to peek at the side-view mirror. She laughs and jumps out. The trailer home’s owner, Benjamin Lewis, has commandeered the water hose. Darlene ambles over, teasing him good-naturedly in Navajo. Dressed in jeans, a striped button-up shirt, and a cream-colored cowboy hat, the 68-year-old Vietnam veteran cracks a grin and shouts, “I wish I could stay young like this forever!” Benjamin grew up nearby on the reservation and remembers trekking a mile each way, at least twice a week, to a windmill-powered

they got tired of horsing around, the kids would fill the containers and push them back to the house, leaving them outside on a wooden bench for communal use. Since he moved to his current home in 1998, Benjamin has been waiting for the Navajo Tribal Utility Authority to put in a new water line. Baca Chapter, the division of the Navajo Nation that governs this area, installed a septic tank for his bathroom, but he had to haul water from a nearby windmillpowered well for it to work. He used to fill his drinking barrels there too, until he found a sign posted on the well warning that the unregulated, untreated water had tested positive for uranium (a vestige of the area’s now shuttered mining industry), coliform bacteria, and nitrates from livestock waste. Benjamin wasn’t surprised. “There’s a lot of other windmills besides the one here that I know have been contaminated. Just about almost every windmill out here, you can see signs on.” He could have gotten water at his mom’s house, a little over

8 miles to the north, but he would have only been able to carry small containers. After seeing the yellow truck out for delivery, he approached Darlene and asked to be added to her route. Now Benjamin has relied on her to supply water for the past two years. Workers from the Navajo Tribal Utility Authority showed up on Benjamin’s property with a backhoe last year, and he was hopeful they would move ahead with the new water line. Instead, they only dug a shallow hole that they covered up again before the end of the day. The ground was too hard, they explained, and regulations forbade them from using dynamite to break through it. They promised to return with different equipment. That was last summer. He hasn’t heard a word since. “I’m well-set here,” Benjamin says. “Really, I don’t have anything to complain about but the water. But one of these days I’ll get it. With the coming spring, I’ll probably have running water.”

hen darlene was growing up on the reservation, her family didn’t have an indoor tap. At least once a week they hauled their barrels several miles to fill them at their church’s well. She and her sisters washed their hair only on Sundays and Thursdays. When doing the dishes, they would save the rinse water for washing the next round. She remembers her grandfather, a medicine man who made the family’s moccasins, frequently chastising her and her siblings, “You need to save the water!” She graduated from Thoreau High School and settled nearby after marrying a ranch hand, Tom, who had also grown up on the Navajo Nation. The couple worked hard to provide for their

Darlene’s favorite part of the job: Visiting her clients, like 89-year-old Nina Garcia.

In 2002, she told Tom she wanted to work as a school bus driver. He went with her to an employment office, where she signed up to earn her commercial driver’s license. Driving home, the future looked bright. But one week before her test, a horse fell on top of Tom while he was training it, and he died of his injuries. Their oldest child had just graduated from high school; their youngest was 8. The burden of providing for the family rested squarely on Darlene’s shoulders. She took a job driving a water truck for an Albuquerque, New Mexico–based construction company, which laid her off after a few months. She went to a similar job at another company, only to be laid off again. Between Darlene’s unemployment benefits, her eldest daughter’s income as a heavy machinery operator, the younger children’s survivors’ benefits, and the extra cash that her two sons brought in chopping and

She knew that St. Bonaventure Indian Mission offered help to people in the community, including house repairs, food, clothing, and utility assistance, “but I thought it was for people who really needed help.” It wasn’t until the family couldn’t pay their electric bill that she finally went to ask for assistance. While filling out the paperwork, she gave her CDL to the receptionist, who immediately called executive director Chris Halter. A new diesel-powered Chevy C8500 had arrived just one month earlier. It was custom-fitted with a food-grade water tank, as well as a special suspension system designed to mitigate the wear and tear brought on by the reservation’s rocky terrain. But Chris hesitated to send it out for delivery. “I needed someone to take care of this water truck and make it last for a long time.” Watching how roughly his drivers—all men—handled the old truck and the mission’s other vehicles

convinced him that St. Bonaventure needed a female driver. So Chris told his staff to pass along the word about the opening to any female truck drivers they knew. And then Darlene walked in. “I thought, She’s precisely what I’m looking for for,” he recalls. He hired her the next day. After eight years she still finds the work deeply rewarding—it resonates with the values of her Navajo upbringing and her Christian faith. “Plus I know how it is to have no water,” she says, “so I want to help.” Today, everyone in the community knows Darlene as the Water Lady, waving when they pass on remote stretches of road and coming out to chat when she arrives at their home. The staff at St. Bonaventure calls her their eyes and ears—and her help isn’t limited to water delivery. If someone’s roof is wearing out, Darlene tells the mission to dispatch a repair crew to the residence. If a household needs lamp oil or warm clothing or nonperishable food, she drops by the next time she’s in the area. She often spends extra time visiting with the elderly, filling them in on their kids’ lives or just listening when they want to talk. “Sometimes, if they’re sick and need prayer, I’ll pray with them,” she says. When she stops by the gas station one morning for a cup of coffee, she runs into a young man whose mother passed away two years ago. Darlene knows he’s been struggling lately, and she offers encouragement and kind words in Navajo. Back in the truck minutes later, she says, “I’m everybody’s auntie, sister, mom … ”

S

t. bonaventure began trucking water out to the surrounding community in 1978, four years after the

mission’s founding. At the time the service reached far fewer people. It was a matter of resources: The truck that was used until 2008 held only 3,000 gallons and was notoriously unreliable. “It spent more days in the shop than it did delivering water,” Chris says. The same year that St. Bonaventure started up the service, the Navajo Tribal Utility Authority drilled wells in Smith Lake, a town just across the Continental Divide

“ Until a donor

visited the Navajo Nation, George had no idea that there were people living without running water in the United States.

” from Thoreau. As houses were hooked up to the resulting infrastructure, they were removed from the mission’s delivery route. But the staff soon discovered these households still needed them. The wells hadn’t been dug deep enough, and the water was laced with all sorts of minerals. It didn’t pose any immediate health risks, but what flowed out of the taps was often tinted brown or black and smelled of sulfur. Chris sent out a plea for donations so St. Bonaventure could expand its service. In response, a couple from Texas stepped forward and bought the truck Darlene drives now. Smith Lake residents were added back to the route. “The program is definitely bigger and better now than it ever was,” Chris says. “But we can’t get by on just one truck, and we need to deliver more water.”

F1_Happy_WaterLady_DWR.indd 61

The number of homes with indoor taps has grown at a plodding pace, and rocky land isn’t the only obstacle. Some people live on land so remote that connecting a house to the existing infrastructure would cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, an expense that neither residents nor their chapters can come close to affording. People can purchase bottled drinking water at the gas station or the Dollar General, but it’s too expensive to buy what a family needs for everyday cleaning and cooking. Some visit coin-operated filling stations in the cities of Crownpoint or Gallup, lugging barrels, tanks, and buckets up to 100 miles round-trip. St. Bonaventure has an on-site well with a free public spigot, but people are asked to self-limit how much they take home. “You got to look out for the next person,” says office manager Cindy Howe. But hauling water, whether from the city or from the mission, requires transportation—and the strength to lift the full barrels and jugs (5 gallons weighs 40 pounds). For the elderly and the rural poor, delivery is the only option. Thankfully, St. Bonaventure has help. The mission is collaborating with DigDeep, a Los Angeles–based nonprofit focused on defending the human right to water. Before the partnership with St. Bonaventure, called the Navajo Water Project, DigDeep helped build infrastructure exclusively in Africa. Executive director George McGraw, who studied international law at the United Nations’ University for Peace, was shocked—and embarrassed—when, in 2012, he found out about the conditions on the reservation. Until he heard from a donor who had visited the Navajo Nation on a mission trip, George hadn’t known that there were people living without running water in the United States. According to the most recent American Community Survey, onehalf of one percent of households in

the U.S.—about 1.6 million people— lack complete indoor plumbing systems. DigDeep is working to change that, beginning with the Navajo Water Project. “There are three problems that we’re solving on the reservation,” George says. “First, our current clients aren’t getting enough water. Second, they’re keeping it in barrels, buckets, pickle jars, cups—whatever can hold it. Finally, there are more potential clients that we need to hook up to the project, and the whole system needs to be made more efficient in order to be able to serve them.” So far, they’ve procured another water truck—which was retrofitted with a new engine and a food-grade tank—and a second driver, allowing St. Bonaventure to double the monthly deliveries. Last November, the next phase began: installing in-home water systems complete with 1,200-gallon underground cisterns, sinks, showers, and electric water heaters. The goal is to equip 205 households by the end of 2018. By far the costliest and most complicated objective is still in the works: drilling a new well at Smith Lake. If all goes according to plan, construction will be underway by March or April, and clients could receive clean Smith Lake water as early as mid-2016. Eventually the goal is to get running water into all the houses, but realistically that’s a very long-term aim. “I think that, as much as I’d like to say we’ll phase out the water truck in my lifetime, we won’t,” says Chris, who’s 48. Darlene will continue delivering to every household on the list. She’ll also keep driving the old truck. “This one has air conditioning,” she says with a sly smile.

tend to go missing, letting in bugs and wind-borne debris. Holding the hose over the barrel, Darlene grips the nozzle’s red handle and releases a gushing stream. She gives the container a swirl and, after dumping out the dirty water, discovers something at the bottom. Tipping the barrel over, she reaches in and pulls out a piece of red garden hose used as a siphon. She hangs it from a tree branch. “Hi!” Darlene turns at the sound of the young voice to see two boys, 8 and 7, who’ve ventured out of the house at the end of the lot. She knows the kids well; she brought water here to their grandmother before the grandmother passed away and the boys’ parents moved onto the land. “I took out the hose,” Darlene tells them. “My mom says the barrel was dirty,” the older kid says, drawing closer. His brother hangs back, observing silently but curiously. “I cleaned it,” Darlene says. She chats with them about school— they have the day off for Columbus Day—asking where they go, even though she already knows the answer. Then she asks if they have anything else for her to fill. The two kids disappear into a nearby hogan—an eight-sided house built in traditional Navajo style—and return with an empty 1-gallon apple juice jug. Darlene fills it up at the spigot on the side of the truck. The brothers thank her and turn back toward their house, carrying the now heavy bottle between them. Back in the driver’s seat, Darlene glances in her side-view mirror and catches sight of the boys pumping their fists. She obliges and honks the horn, laughing as their faces disappear from view.

Soak Up Your Surroundings

For about 15,000 years, there was abundant artesian-spring water in these parts. Bubbling springs seeped up through the desert floor, creating the grassy meadows that explorers called las vegas. Sitting just west of downtown on the site of the former water source, the 180-acre Springs Preserve offers visitors interactive exhibits, hiking trails, botanical gardens, live animals, and a glimpse at a sustainable future. Don’t miss the live-action flash flood demonstration in the Origen Museum, where 5,000 gallons of recycled water whoosh through a recreated desert ravine every 20 minutes. DAY-TRIP DIVERSIONS

As chilly temps give way to warm, sunny days, you’ll want to be outside more often. But if you’re battling joint discomfort, particularly in your knees and hips, mobility may be an issue. “Chronic joint pain can be relieved with massage, physical therapy, warm baths, low-impact exercise to build muscle to support the joint, and, if necessary, medications like NSAIDs,” says Cecile Kehoe, COO of DreamBrands, Inc., which develops and manufactures dietary supplements for health and fitness. Kehoe recommends eating more vegetables and whole grains since research shows these foods help reduce inflammation. There are also alternative herbal remedies such as DreamBrands’ dietary supplement, Mdrive Joint. “Our goal in developing this product was to help alleviate temporary excessive joint inflammation and pain due to overexertion,” Kehoe explains. “Mdrive Joint was formulated using an active ingredient sourced from chicken cartilage branded UC-II. Clinical studies show UC-II can alleviate joint pain that arises from strenuous activities.” To support UC-II, DreamBrands added a powerful trio of herbal extracts used for centuries in Ayurvedic medicine to alleviate temporary inflammation due to acute physical exertion. The formula includes extracts of boswellia and turmeric as well as a small dose of bromelain to aid in absorption. Sodium hyaluronate, the salt form of hyaluronic acid (a component of the lubricant found in your joints) is added to the mix too. “You can also try alternative therapies like acupuncture, gentle yoga, or tai chi to alleviate the pain,”

Kehoe says. “Sometimes if the pain is too great for any activity, resting or immobilizing the joint may be your best bet.”

RESTORE YOUR CONFIDENCE Wrinkles are a natural part of aging, but with the right treatment you can soften those “road maps of life.” While some people use injectable fillers and collagen treatments to provide quick remedies for troubling crinkles and creases, Dr. Roger Bassin, founder of the Bassin Center for Plastic Surgery, often recommends NaturalFill Natural Facial Filler. NaturalFill uses your own fat cells to help smooth out lines, add

volume to the lips, and restore fullness to hollowed cheeks. Bassin says it’s a natural alternative to synthetic fillers and collagen treatments. “The results are natural-looking and permanent and can eliminate the need for frequent maintenance treatments that accompany other injectable fillers.” According to Bassin, no general anesthesia is required during the treatment, and patients will experience minimal downtime and long-

A thick mane can do wonders for your self-esteem, but a number of factors can impact the health of your hair. Think stress, hormonal changes, poor nutrition, age, medication, and damage caused by the environment. That’s where Viviscal comes in. Backed by seven clinical trials and 25 years of research, Viviscal is one of the most researched hair-growth supplements on the market today. Drug-free Viviscal supplements promote existing hair growth by prolonging your hair’s natural growth cycle, says Mark Holland, CEO of

Lifes2good North America. (Lifes2good is the parent company of Viviscal.) Holland recommends taking two tablets daily to see thicker hair and reduced hair shedding in as little as three months. In clinical trials, women saw a 39 percent decrease in hair shedding after just three months. After six months, women had an 80 percent increase in the number of terminal hairs. Women also reported a noticeable increase in scalp coverage, hair volume, and hair strength, notes Holland. “We offer an auto-ship program called Viviscal Elite,” Holland adds. “Sign up at Viviscal.com/Southwest, and we’ll deliver the product to your doorstep every 90 days. Even when you’re busy, we want to help you keep your hair looking its best.”

BANISH THOSE LEG VEINS As the mercury starts to rise, you may be tempted to break out those shorts. Some people, though, are hesitant to bare their legs if they have deeply colored, noticeable veins. While there are ways to conceal varicose veins, treatment options are also available. “Modern vein care should be an incisionless, lunch-hour procedure that is virtually painless and requires no post-procedural compression garments,” says Dr. Dominic Pedulla, medical director for the Oklahoma Vein and Endovascular Center. OVEC uses a series of modern advances not ordinarily found in vein care to help people get the results they desire. “Our patients can have virtually painless, same-day procedures without any serious medical risks and without requiring lifestyle modification, undue time off from work, or any major inconveniences,” Pedulla says. Plus, more than 90 percent of these procedures are covered by major insurers. “Why not call today?” Pedulla asks. “Lo único que va a perder es sus venas.” (The only thing you will lose is veins.)

lasting results. Minimizing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles is also a surefire way to get a confidence boost. While a cosmetic treatment is one way you can immediately improve your appearance and enhance your selfesteem, a common misconception is that these treatments are done in the name of vanity. That’s not a fair assessment, says John Ferris, a spokesman for BTL Aesthetics, a manufacturer of medical and aesthetic equipment that offers two noninvasive solutions for loose, sagging skin: Vanquish ME and Exilis Elite. “There are several reasons why people elect to have a cosmetic procedure, but most will tell you they seek procedures to increase their selfconfidence. At the end of the day, don’t we each want to be happy?” Ferris says not to pass judgment but to accept individuals for who they are and encourage them to regain their confidence.

TREAT ORAL IRRITATIONS

GET RID OF MIGRAINES

Mouth sores can be quite agonizing, sometimes making it difficult to eat, drink, or even talk. If you’re looking for a way to soothe the discomfort associated with canker sores or other oral irritations, dental professionals suggest using CloSYS toothpastes and rinses, which use a patented formula that includes Cloralstan®. “We’re proud to know our product, while not a cure for mouth sores or sensitivity, is highly recommended to people that suffer from these painful conditions,” says James Ratcliff, CEO of Rowpar Pharmaceuticals, the maker of CloSYS products. He says the products have also been shown to be effective in relieving pain from mouth ulcers in patients undergoing chemotherapy. “Our product uses the tagline ‘non-irritating, great for sensitive mouths’ because CloSYS can be very calming,” Ratcliff adds. “We’re very different because we don’t make oral care products that burn or aggravate the mouth. We just think oral care shouldn’t hurt; that’s why all our products are alcoholand sulfate-free, and pH-balanced.”

We all experience the occasional headache. And if you’re among the more than 30 million Americans who suffer from migraines, you know just how debilitating they can be. Sometimes over-the-counter medications just don’t cut it. If you’ve received a chronic migraine diagnosis from a neurologist and traditional treatments have failed, you could be a candidate for the Omega™ Procedure, a minimally invasive, nonpharmaceutical alternative, from Migraine Treatment Centers of America. “So many patients have tried different drugs only to have their migraines either resist the drug right off the bat or come galloping back once the body gains some resistance to the drug,” says Mary Gravis, patient coordinator for Migraine Treatment Centers of America. “We’ve also had patients come to us because they have taken so many pharmaceuticals they are at advanced risk of liver failure. These patients are often really desperate for a solution, and many have no idea there is a surgical treatment that works so well.”

The Omega Procedure, which has an efficacy rate of 87 percent, is an advance on neurostimulation techniques that have been in development for decades. As part of the procedure, a small electronic device is implanted under your skin. Using an external remote control, you can activate the device at the first sign of a migraine. Pain-blocking signals will be sent to the source of the throbbing to eliminate or drastically reduce its intensity. It’s like noise-canceling headphones for a migraine, Gravis says.

HELP YOUR LOVED ONES Seniors and people living with disabilities often can’t or won’t speak up for themselves when it comes to their own health. Eric Little, chief development officer for Right at Home, a leading provider of in-home care for seniors, says many of our older relatives don’t take the time to set forth clear expectations of how they would like to spend their lives as they age. “Consequently, they find it

more difficult to voice these desires and manage life’s many decisions effectively as time wears on,” he says. Right at Home’s sister company, IKOR, an advocacy and life management group for seniors and disabled individuals, works to ensure that its clients achieve an optimal quality of life, are protected from fraud and abuse, and retain as much independence and dignity as possible.

“An effective advocate will lend an experienced, authoritative voice to seniors who may be unwilling or unable to speak up successfully on their own behalf,” Little says. “The advocate should be seasoned in picking up on details others might overlook, whether those are unvoiced quality-of-life desires or intentionally concealed signs that might reveal all is not ideal in their current situation.”

Technological advancements. An increasingly diverse and global society. Mounting student debt. The Internet. These are just a few of the challenges— and opportunities—facing institutions of higher education today. From offering multilingual degrees and hybrid courses to creating programs tailored to entrepreneurial dreams, schools are adapting to meet the needs and interests of today’s college students. FUND YOUR FUTURE A frequent topic of discussion among academics is the increasing cost of an education.

The Institute for College Access and Success found that graduates in the class of 2014 owed an average of $28,950—up 56 percent from a decade ago. (For comparison: Inflation grew 25 percent over the same period.) In addition to the funds that students borrow for classes, they often have to pay up front for books, food, and fees. Yet few colleges have devised a plan that cuts costs for students and still maintains cash flow for the school. Auburn University, however, created an all-inclusive tuition bundle. When you pay for a semester in Auburn’s Executive Program, you’re covering the cost of classes, books, room and board during campus visits, and more. Plus, students are eligible for loans that are not needs-based. The school also has a concierge service that handles logistics for every student, from class registration to accommodations during on-campus workshops. Do you have a full-time job? Are you raising a family? Both? Auburn also caters to graduate

students’ busy schedules. The university’s degree programs are based almost entirely online, which allows attendees to watch lectures and complete coursework on their own time. Students still feel connected to the university, though. They’ll visit campus five times throughout the program, helping build a sense of community, no matter how far from

campus the student lives. Auburn has used a combination of online and in-person education in its executive programs since the beginning, according to Kim Kuerten, the programs’ executive director. “We’ve been using a hybrid learning model since before it was cool,” Kuerten says.

BLUE SKY Your Career

WITH AN AUBURN EXECUTIVE MBA What would you like to do; where would you like to go with your career? Would you advance within your company? Expand your authority and responsibility, take on a new challenge? Yes, of course. But the question is not “what would you do?” But “how?” The Auburn program is a clever, flexible combination of on-campus residencies and distance technologies that allow you to continue in your job while receiving the first-class education that will send your career skyward.

EXPAND YOUR HORIZONS Though Houston is known as the “energy capital of the world” and is widely renowned for its role in the nation’s space program, the city’s community college is also an impressive asset. One of the largest community colleges in the nation, Houston Community College offers more than 300 associate degree and certification programs to more than 70,000 students annually. HCC also hosts the largest international population of any community college in the U.S., with more than 5,400 students from nearly 150 countries. While an HCC education is approximately 84 percent more affordable than a comparable

track at a four-year university, international students can still take advantage of financial assistance through the HCC Foundation. Additionally, the Mexican consulate of Houston recently gave $63,000 to the community college—its largest-ever scholarship donation to an educational institution. While increased access to a global education for Hispanic students is one of HCC’s main objectives, the college also prides itself on the

quality learning experience its pupils receive through small classes (20 people, on average) with highly trained professors: 75 percent of faculty members hold a master’s or doctorate degree. In terms of awarding associate degrees to Hispanic students, HCC ranks second among all community colleges in the country and 20th among all colleges and four-year universities nationwide. “Our goal is to prepare students to be leaders and innovators in their chosen fields,” says chancellor Cesar Maldonado. Maldonado, who was invited to join leaders from public and private sectors for the 2015 White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics, said the school will continue to invest in Hispanic students. As such, HCC is developing a program to allow students to transfer seamlessly to the University of Houston.

In Miami, where two-thirds of the population is Hispanic, the demand for a Spanish-language executive degree is high. Anuj Mehrotra, vice dean and professor of management science at the University of Miami School of Business Administration, says the school created the Global Executive MBA in Spanish program to meet this need.

marketplace are so we can meet and exceed them,” Mehrotra says. Along those lines, the school launched the Miami Executive MBA for the Americas program in 2014. The program is catered to the same audience as the aforementioned Spanish degree, but courses are conducted in English and tailored to the active learning style of many business executives. The Miami Executive MBA for the Americas is based on group discussions and connections with the faculty members and C-suite executives, rather than lectures. The degree helps students master doing

business in the Americas and on a global scale. Participants of the program come from a variety of backgrounds, from hospitality to banking. The University of Miami also understands how valuable time is for adults pursuing additional degrees. Mehrotra emphasizes how important it is to craft class schedules and syllabi that are feasible for current executives to complete while maintaining fulltime roles at their companies. As a result, these courses have an online component as well as required classroom time.

Mehrotra says many students enrolled in the program are senior executives who work in South Florida or Latin America and conduct business in Spanish, and wish to expand their business and leadership skills. The degree program is taught by bilingual professors who have expertise in doing global business. According to Mehrotra, the University of Miami is the first school to offer an entire executive MBA program in Spanish. “We’re constantly taking a look at the curriculum and portfolio to see what the demands of the

At the University of California, San Diego’s Rady School of Management, students focus on innovation and entrepreneurship. In fact, part of the Rady curriculum is a core sequence, called lab-to-market, that’s dedicated to the development

and commercialization of products or businesses. There are two main tracks: entrepreneurship, for students who want to start a new business, and intrapreneurship, for those who dream of launching a product. The lab-to-market core sequence stretches across two semesters and walks students through the entire development and integration process. The program helps business-minded students discover the most critical aspects of taking an idea from lab to market, says Joleen Schultz, the Rady

School’s director of marketing and communications. Since the first Rady class graduated 10 years ago, alumni and current students have founded nearly 100 companies that are still operational today. Kush Kapila, who attended the Rady School from 2008 to 2010, says he initially applied to the school because he wanted to learn business fundamentals applicable to his job in the field of life sciences. What he didn’t expect to gain was the confidence and insight he needed to start his own company. Today, Kapila is the founder and CEO of Sterlings Mobile Salon and Barber Co., a mobile haircut service. “I don’t think I would have started Sterlings without the network I gained, as well as the fundamentals I learned, from the Rady School,” Kapila says. “The lessons help you set up the framework for a business— everything from creation all the way up to writing your business plan.”

White earned a doctorate in chemistry from the University of California, San Diego, and quickly became a key player in the rampant success of San Diego’s craft beer industry. In 1995, he founded White Labs after researching and developing a library of yeast strains around the world. The enterprise is a pioneer in manufacturing yeast cultures and providing fermentation services to brewing, wine, and distilling industries. In addition to White’s success, a number of the region’s best breweries —Ballast Point, AleSmith, Rough

Draft, and Benchmark Brewing, to name a few—got their start as homebrew operations founded by UC San Diego alumni. White and his beer-brewing cohorts are but a single case study of where a degree from UC San Diego can lead. An affinity for science led them to craft beer. Where can your interests take you? As the lifestyles and career goals of students change with the times, so

must institutes of higher learning. When brewers set out to create new beers, they understand it’s not an exact science. Even if they start with a fundamental recipe, it’s important to experiment with ingredients to yield something fresh. In the same way, colleges such as these are taking basic degree requirements and finding ways to build curriculums and programs that appeal to today’s students and set them up for future success.

HEART OF THE COMMUNITY

SPLASH OF COLOR

Employee efforts brightened up Albuquerque’s Civic Plaza.

Sharing the Love in Albuquerque

Southwest Airlines helps build community by revitalizing Civic Plaza. Last April, a group of 50 enthusiastic Southwest Airlines Employees and our families gathered in Albuquerque’s Civic Plaza, an underutilized, seldom-visited concrete space. We poured our hearts into a day of community service, cleaning and beautifying the plaza. We never anticipated the effect that our efforts—along with a Southwest Airlines Heart of the Community grant—would have on the area. Heart of the Community is a Southwest initiative that supports placemaking, the intentional rejuvenation of public spaces. Southwest partners with the nonprofit Project for Public Spaces and local community organizations to achieve this goal. Not long after the spring cleanup took place, we were proud to see families having lunch, business professionals holding meetings, and visitors mingling in the space.

Southwest, along with the DowntownABQ Main Street Initiative and Project for Public Spaces, celebrated the launch of the newly revitalized Civic Plaza in September. The space hosted sidewalk chalk art, food trucks, jumproping performances, and a screening of The Wizard of Oz. Neighbors came to mingle in a place they had created, and our community was brought a little closer together. Today, Civic Plaza is fresh, alive, and inviting with its colorful seating, shade structures, and new programming. It’s the heart of my community! Through our placemaking projects, places like Civic Plaza are being renewed all across the country, bringing communities together to enjoy their cities like never before. This effort makes me proud of my home city, Albuquerque, a little oasis with a lot to offer. By creating beautiful locations that attract locals and visitors alike, we boost the city’s economy and improve the quality of life for everyone. What an amazing thing to be a part of! Southwest Airlines connects people to the places that mean the most to them. We’re extending that purpose through our Heart of the Community program. By encouraging more connections on the ground, we’re helping locals—both Southwest Customers and Employees like myself—feel a sense of ownership in the places they share. We strive to make residents proud to call their city home. —Nathan Mares, Customer Support & Services Team Leader In 2014, Southwest launched the Heart of the Community program, which awards grants to create public spaces in the hearts of communities served by the airline. To date, the program has supported 13 innovative and transformative projects. To learn more, visit pps.org/Heart-of-the-Community.

One Question

Hilary Duff,

what’s the best advice you’ve received? When I was growing up, my mom always told us to do the most you can do in one day. Her reasoning was you’ll always feel more accomplished the more you do, and the more you do, the more you can do! That’s not to say lazy days sprinkled in are totally unacceptable. Along with balancing my son and my career, I’ve learned the importance of stillness. I try to find peace in the simple things.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY BEN COPE

The second season of Hilary’s show, Younger, premiered last month on TV Land.
