Defining the Future of the Public Research University
UC San Diego Designing a Better World Thoughtful design improves our daily lives in countless ways, large and small. Advances in discipline-specific knowledge and novel technological capabilities provide new opportunities to improve how we live, work, and play. From visual artists to engineers, researchers at UC San Diego work side-by-side to develop new design approaches that will enrich human life and society.
The elegant UC San Diego Health Sciences Biomedical Research Facility II was designed to support collaboration among researchers from genomics, regenerative medicine, bioinformatics and pediatrics with a finely articulated layering of space. The LEED Platinum-plus building won the Grand Orchid award from the San Diego Architectural Foundation.

Rethinking Living Space Architect and visual arts professor Teddy Cruz, M.Des.S., is reimagining the way we think about urban design and architecture. Renowned for his research on the Tijuana– San Diego border, Cruz has advanced our thinking about urban policy, affordable housing and civic infrastructure by promoting a humane vision that breaks down cultural barriers and explores the social complexity and richness of public and private space.
Teddy Cruz, M.Des.S.
Forecasting Catastrophic Fires Wildfires are one of the most intractable—and unpredictable—environmental threats in Southern California. The best defense is to get ahead of them. Ilkay Altintas, Ph.D., and her team at WIFIRE use cutting-edge technology at UC San Diego’s San Diego Supercomputer Center to monitor and forecast where a wildfire is heading while it’s burning. The information helps firefighters and first responders to evacuate areas and keep people safe.
Ilkay Altintas, Ph.D.
Creating Wearable Health Detectors Most health-sensing technology is invasive and cumbersome. But what if it were designed to be wearable, self-powered, unobtrusive—and could call an ambulance? That’s the goal of electrical engineering professor Patrick Mercier, Ph.D. His work to scavenge energy from perspiration is just one of the ways to self-power wearable systems that could monitor your health and send the information wirelessly to your phone.
Patrick Mercier, Ph.D.
Designing for Human Needs Don Norman, Ph.D., one of Business Week’s 27 most influential designers in the world, intends to make the world work better by transforming design. As director of The Design Lab at UC San Diego, Norman brings together colleagues across the campus—from humanities to business management—to develop human-centered design strategy that will satisfy both individual and societal needs. Finally! Shirts made to be worn untucked
We started UNTUCKit because we had trouble finding shirts that looked good when untucked. Most were too long and just looked sloppy. It was such a classic look done such little justice. So we decided to launch a shirting company for those who want to wear their shirt untucked. We would make a better shirt. A shirt cut for convenience and not convention; designed to fall at the perfect length. An ‘untucked’ shirt. And that’s what we’ve done. So go ahead…UNTUCKit!

GARY’S GREETING
When Southwest Airlines first took to the skies in 1971, the idea was simple—offer low-fare air travel with the best Customer Service delivered by People who have a passion for serving others. I’ve been at Southwest for almost 30 years, and I can’t believe the amount of change I’ve witnessed. But our original idea is as relevant today as it was all those years ago, and we’re staying focused on the basics of serving others. At Southwest, the basics come down to two simple concepts: Reliability and
Hospitality. We’ve never tried to be all things to all people, but we aim to be the very best at what our Customers tell us matters most to them. They want low fares with no hidden fees, a convenient flight schedule, friendly Customer Service, and to arrive on time with their bag. Reliability consists of delivering on these expectations again and again, and I’m proud of our proven track record of doing so. For us, Hospitality means treating one another like Family and our Customers like guests in our home.
We recently received a letter from a Customer who had traveled with us to visit his grandson. The young man had been injured playing football, and the injury was so severe that it resulted in the amputation of his left leg. The Southwest Employee who helped the Customer check in for his flight sensed that something was wrong. She held his hand and, after listening to his story, offered some words of comfort. Upon returning from the trip, the Customer was on his way to baggage claim when he heard the same Employee call out to him. She had made note of his itinerary so that she could visit with him and get an update on his grandson. She then asked for his address so she could keep in touch and stay informed about the boy’s progress. I can’t think of a better example to illustrate what we mean by Hospitality. Sometimes the simplest gestures make the greatest impact. While we constantly strive for improvement and enhancement in an ever-changing world, we haven’t lost sight of the basics since day one. Thank you for coming along for the ride!

Dear Southwest, I planned to get engaged on a Southwest flight as my girlfriend flew home “alone” after visiting me. Claire McKnight in customer relations helped me make arrangements. I work odd hours, so the day my girlfriend was supposed to leave, I woke her up around 3:30 a.m. to say goodbye and “left for work.” I instead drove to the Detroit airport and got on her flight. After takeoff, a flight attendant announced that a debit card with my girlfriend’s name on it had been found (it was an expired gift card). When they handed it to her, “See You Tonight” by Scotty McCreery started playing. I walked up from the back row, took the intercom, and proposed! I want to recommend that Claire McKnight, Molly Culwell, Deanna Vasquez, and Lorie Garza be rewarded for making our day the best it could possibly be. Words can’t describe how perfect they made everything! —Greg Freyer

I was pregnant and traveling alone with a toddler, and our flight got delayed and then canceled. I ended up spending the night in the airport and was stressed out about everything. All the staff on my flight, which was supposed to go from Baltimore to Las Vegas, were very friendly, but one particular woman named Alex Watt Muir went above and beyond. When they announced our flight was canceled, I started to cry; I had one diaper left, and my son’s pants were wet. Alex was at the end of her shift. She took my phone number and ran to a Walmart at 1 a.m. while I waited in line to get my flight rescheduled. She even called me from the store to see if I needed anything else. She brought back the diapers and would not accept payment for them. I was very grateful for her kindness. Although my trip was stressful, tiring, and frustrating, the customer service that we received and the all-around friendliness of the staff was amazing. I forever will think of Alex when I fly, and I hope I run into her again! —Wendy Kuzniar NICE SURPRISE

But then I received a letter from Southwest, and inside was a beautiful note from Susie and my money clip.

concerned that it would be canceled and we wouldn’t make it to Pittsburgh in time for his surgery. I approached a Southwest employee, Keila Rivera, about my concern. Not only did Keila do everything she could to assure me that if our flight was canceled, she would be sure to get us on the last flight out of Orlando that night, but she also shared with me that she completely understood my situation and my stress because she too has a child with a heart defect. We shared tears and hugs as we quickly exchanged our stories at the ticket desk. She was a guardian angel for me that night, and she came through for us, making sure we were able to successfully get to our destination that night. She even sent me a message the next day to see how my son’s procedure was going and if I needed anything else! I am so thankful that Keila was working at the desk that night. You have a special and compassionate employee in her, and I think that she should be recognized for going out of her way to help us get to Pittsburgh in a timely manner. My flight from Nashville to Baltimore was delayed two hours due to terrible storms. We departed for Baltimore but were diverted to Richmond, Virginia. I am hard of hearing. An off-duty Southwest flight attendant happened to be sitting beside me. She knew some sign language and also communicated with me by text on her phone. If not for her kindness, I would have been completely unaware of what was happening. She even checked connections and available flights for me. She gave up her personal rest time to be sure I was aware of what was going on. Her name is Janet Holler, and I will never forget her kindness. Please thank her again for me. OUR STAR Customer Service Representative Albuquerque, New Mexico
Diane Fajardo “You should work for an airline!” That’s what Diane Fajardo’s mother always told her. But it didn’t become a possibility until 2007, when Diane received an invitation to interview with Southwest Airlines. The only problem? Diane hadn’t applied for a job at Southwest. It turns out Diane’s sister had submitted an application on her behalf without her knowledge. “I think she just saw my heart and knew the position would be the perfect fit for me,” Diane says. “I immediately quit my job as an accountant and never looked back.” Diane has jumped at every opportunity given to her at Southwest, including moving to Atlanta for two months to serve as a Class Coordinator at the Company’s newest Customer Support and Services Center. Her LUV of Southwest and her peers was plain to see, which is why she was nominated to be Our Star. Even in her spare time, Diane enjoys the company of her Coworkers, often playing tour guide to those who invite her along on their vacations. “I love traveling,” she says. “Los Angeles and New York City are my favorites.” Diane is a pro at the planning and strategy needed to travel standby successfully. (Southwest Employees can fly for free on any flight if there is a seat available.) But she doesn’t just use her flight benefits for fun: She’s also used them to help the person who first supported her career choice. A few years ago, Diane’s mother, Della, began experiencing neurological difficulties. “We tried every specialist in Albuquerque. No one could help her,” Diane says. The family finally turned to Phoenix’s Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center, where Della was diagnosed with Parkinson’s. Diane’s flight privileges let her and Della travel to and from the clinic whenever they needed. After finding out she would be featured in this month’s issue, Diane’s only request was for a few extra copies for her mom to take to friends at Bible study. We’re more than happy to oblige and help celebrate you, Diane! —Sydney Holt

RAPID REWARDS FREEDOM STORY Executive and Board Consultant, St. Louis
Thomas Bakewell When Thomas Bakewell started Bakewell Consulting in 1990, Southwest immediately became his carrier of choice. Much like the airline, he has since expanded his company with service in cities across the nation. Today, Thomas’ business is thriving. He travels at least twice a week to visit clients from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C., and he recently authored his first book, Claiming Your Place at the Boardroom Table: The Essential Handbook for Excellence in Governance and Effective Directorship. Directorship Thomas is often needed when it’s not business as usual, which means he frequently takes last-minute trips. “The greatest thing about Southwest is that it’s easy: Great flights, great schedules, great prices, and no change fees,” he says. The airline’s flexibility works well for his ever-changing schedule, but he has an even greater appreciation for Southwest’s Employees. From the Customer Service Agents and Operations Agents to the Flight Attendants and Pilots, Thomas sees Southwest as one well-choreographed Team striving to make his travel easier and to ensure he arrives ontime. He says the positivity of the Southwest experience helps him arrive in the right frame of mind, which is crucial since he often heads directly to a boardroom or executive suite after stepping off the plane. As a Rapid Rewards A-List Preferred Member and a Companion Pass holder, Thomas takes full advantage of his perks by bringing his wife and kids along for trips whenever possible. The family was onboard for one of Southwest’s first flights to San Juan, Puerto Rico, and another memorable experience came during a trip to New York in July 2011, when Thomas and his son scored tickets to a Yankees game. In order to attend, they had to stay an extra day. Because they were able to switch their Southwest flight without a change fee, they got to witness from the front row as Derek Jeter scored a home run with his 3,000th hit. Thank you, Thomas, for your steadfast loyalty. We’re honored you’ve trusted Southwest through the years to get you where you need to be, when you need to be there—with a little fun along the way, of course! —Whitney Bartels

WAIT FOR IT
Cats teach us that waiting is half the pounce.
Dear Reader, “You’ve got to know when to hold ’em, know when to fold ’em.” Which leads us to the Greek god. Kairos, youngest son of Zeus, had wings and an athletic body and a youthful face and curly locks over his brow—but the back of his head was bald as an olive. Why? Because the perfect moment is swift but ages quickly. “Fortune,” the ancients liked to say, “is bald behind.” In fact, the Greeks made a big deal of distinguishing between chronos (time) and kairos (the passage of time). We might find it useful to do the same. Maybe we should stop lamenting the loss of time or crying about how little we seem to have in the first place. Instead, whenever we find an unscheduled moment, let’s say, “This is the perfect time to—” And then pounce.

The most important lessons I ever learned about time came from several cats, a country western singer, and a Greek god. I think we waste a lot of time wishing we had more of it. Sure, time is money. But it’s also an ice cream cone: It drips away, and if you’re not quick, it just glops out of the cone and lands on your shoes. And time is a mouse. It hides in its lair behind a wall, making maddening little scurrying noises, and then suddenly it dashes by you. If you happen to be a competent cat, you know that timing involves more than seizing the mouse, or the moment. Great timing means being ready for that moment, knowing when it comes, so you can capture it and leave it on a loved one’s bed. As a cat will teach you, half the skill of pouncing is waiting. So timing also takes judgment. The philosopher Kenny Rogers put it best: 28 southwest march 2015

In “One Foot Behind The Other” [January 2015], the sentence that stood out to me was “They didn’t care what other people thought.” In a society where we are constantly trying to please everyone and be politically correct, this is a wonderful principle by which to live. As long as our personal values and ideals are pure and right, we should not be afraid to offend anyone. Thank you for this reminder to be ourselves and live up to our God-given potential no matter what others may think. Once again, another inspiring article, and timely as we begin the new year.
Roger Bautista WILDWOOD, GEORGIA
/ It’s impossible to please everyone, isn’t it? As for offending people, we stop short of hurting people’s feelings. One principle we love to stick to is being polite. MOST IMPROVED
From my first Southwest flight decades ago it was obvious that this airline was different. Its safety, dependability, and lower fares are critical, of course. Its baggage and cancellation perks are fabulous. But Southwest makes me laugh,

and that’s important. Injecting humor in serious communication not only relieves tension but also gets fliers’ attention. I’d also like to take this opportunity to commend your magazine, which continues to improve. Great new look. Bright writing.
Lorrie DeFrank JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA
/ Glad you like it, Lorrie. And we’ll keep doing those humor injections ourselves. WISH I WERE THERE
You upset me today on the flight I took from Burbank to Oakland. As I read “Your Adventure In Los Cabos” [January 2015] I was envious of my wife and her daughter being there now on a well-deserved break with another mother and daughter. We love going to Los Cabos when we can, and I’m looking forward to visiting again soon. Thank you for the fine article, especially the part about Flora Farms, which we always go to!

feedback FAIRLY DECENT
I read the cover story [“In Criticism of Praise”] in your January issue. I cannot thank you enough for publishing such an apt article. My 10-year-old son plays competitive travel soccer. He possesses a decent amount of talent for his age, but I’m quite unpopular among the other parents when I yell at him for making mistakes. The article hits the nail on the head when it says we should
applaud the effort, not the outcome. If we program our kids wrongly by showering them with too much praise, we’re really setting them up for failure in their adult lives.

@shayfay5 WHAT ABOUT GINNY?
Flipping through the December 2014 issue, I was disappointed to see that Baltimore-based mixologist Ginny Lawhorn was not listed as one of “The Best Bartenders in America.” She is, without a doubt, Baltimore’s Coolest Chick Behind Bars. In addition to bartending at Landmark Theatres Harbor East, she works diligently to put the city’s one-of-a-kind bars and restaurants on the map, and she’s always drumming up support for nonprofit organizations and fundraisers. She donates her time and creativity by creating specialty cocktails that appeal to donors, as well as helps organizations work better with local restaurants, distributors, and vendors by providing instruction and support. She is truly a special soul who deserves this recognition. Please consider her next time!

Duncan Murrell WRITER TRAVEL BACK IN TIME / P. 60

PLAY Number Who knew team loyalty could carry such weight? A study by international business school Insead found that fans seek solace in food the day after a defeat, eating more calories and saturated fat than usual. Supporters of triumphant teams, on the other hand, celebrated by cutting calories by 5 percent and saturated fat by 9 percent. The reason for these dietary ups and downs? Chalk it up to a gut reaction. We live vicariously through sports pros, and their wins or losses can affect our self-control. Bottom line: Check the odds before you make that pregame grocery run.

ORDE R TH IS
The Deep End For a drink that bridges that gap between winter and summer, Dustin Courtright of the W Austin Hotel’s Living Room goes local. “Deep Eddy Vodka is a hometown hero. I paired their lemon vodka with allspice dram, which has a bakingspice flavor that conjures up cold weather. Lillet Blanc, a fortified wine with hints of orange, marries the two, and sparkling wine adds buoyancy. The result is a cocktail that embodies the crisp notes of early spring, providing a little pick-me-up to get you through that final cold stretch.”
Make It ↑ Shake 2 ounces Deep Eddy Lemon Vodka, ½ ounce Lillet Blanc, and ¼ ounce St. Elizabeth Allspice Dram in an ice-filled tin. Strain into a coupe glass, and top with Mumm Napa Brut Prestige.

PLAY Evaluation What about things that have emotional value? “The message of Stuffocation isn’t anti-stuff, it’s anti–too much stuff. Physical things often represent our connection to other people and can spark memories in a way photos can’t. If it has real meaning for you and it doesn’t take up much room, keep it.” Where do I start? “Play the Brewster’s Millions game: It’s inspired by the movie in which Montgomery Brewster has to spend $30 million in a month without buying anything tangible. Calculate the average amount you spend on stuff in a month, and challenge yourself to spend it on experiences instead. I assure you, you’ll find that memories live longer than things.”
Immaterial World
Want to live the good life? Treat yourself to experiences, not things.
46 southwest march 2015
F1_stuffocation_de.indd 46
What’s wrong with having stuff? “Rather than feeling enriched by the things we own, many of us feel stifled,” says James Wallman, author of Stuffocation: Why We’ve Had Enough of Stuff and Need Experience More Than Ever Ever. “Experiences bring us closer to people. They also make for better conversation. Would you rather the person next to you tell you about her new sofa or her trip to Nashville?”
What’s the best way to preserve experiences? “Photos, notes, and souvenirs are great for sparking memories, but to get the most out of your experiences you’ve got to be present. Whatever you’re doing, eliminate distractions, and allow yourself to do it fully. Sure, some experiences cost a lot. But if you’re living in the moment, even ones that cost nothing—taking a walk, going to church, talking with a friend—will make you happy.”

Scott Pelley
Scott Pelley is the anchor of the CBS Evening News and a longtime correspondent for 60 Minutes.
Recently, we were doing a story about a ship that had been torpedoed by North Korea, and we showed a video of it. The trouble was, wrong ship, wrong torpedo. We figured this out right after the broadcast. The next night we put the video back up and said, “Remember when we showed this to you? We were wrong. Here’s how we made that mistake, and we’re sorry about it.” We recovered from our blunder by cherishing it as an indispensable opportunity to learn and by admitting to it quickly, completely, and with humility. People appreciate when you say, “You know what, I blew it.” It fosters goodwill. In a perverse sort of way, I love mistakes.
OUT TAKES ON - CAMER A ROUTINE There’s no such thing as good writing; there’s only good rewriting. I have a computer embedded into the anchor desk, and I rewrite the copy up until the intro music plays.

The Personal Web
Use social media to connect people and they’ll return the favor. Whether to advance your career, meet the love of your life, or land an introduction to a client, you’ve probably experienced the power of networking. Along the way you may have encountered its unattractive underbelly in all its “Nice to meet you, buy my stuff ” glory. Both the good and bad sides of Facebook, LinkedIn, and their ilk come from the so-called “network effect”—the multiplying power triggered by a growing social sphere. But these networks also enable you to do your own, more intimate form of networking, by accessing the whereabouts and connections of your contacts. While corporations use this information for marketing, you can use it to help people and form your own highly personal web. Derek Coburn, co-founder of the professional networking organization Cadre, gets this. When he sees that I’m traveling
52 southwest march 2015
F1_workinsight_KT.indd 52
someplace, he occasionally reaches out and introduces me to an appropriate person or two in that city. This isn’t part of Cadre’s services; he simply understands that the more people he can connect, the stronger his network becomes. Gregory Kolsto, on the other hand, works his personal web to retain the loyalty of his customers. The owner of Oddly Correct Coffee in my hometown of Kansas City, Greg alerts me to his favorite coffee spots in places I visit by commenting on my Instagram photos. Besides making me feel like a valued customer, Greg grows his own network with coffee shops around the world. In return, they steer people to Oddly Correct Coffee. Which is what networking is all about: adding value to the group and gaining value in return. Earning love by spreading love. Don’t call this the network effect. It’s the network affect.

tiny bee’s startup guide Look around. As the former executive director of an organization that creates public schools, I met many librarians who didn’t have enough books to supplement their core curriculum. Filling that void became my mission. Get the kids involved. Every day my children ask which states orders have come in from. The biggest cheers came when we sent our first book to Alaska. Their excitement has been a huge inspiration for me.

Make it easy. With one click you can make a child smile, teach her about giving back, and enhance libraries for hundreds of other children. It’s a simple process that has the potential to touch so many lives.
Here’s how founder Amy Bean describes the online bookstore that gives back: I have 7-year-old twins and a 3-year-old. Watching the toys pile high in our house, I asked myself, “Isn’t there a better way to celebrate children?” So I created Tiny Bee. When you buy a book, you also purchase one for a school library. You can name a school library or select “send to a library in need.” On the cover of each gifted book, we place a sticker that lets the child know a second book has been donated in his honor. The inside front cover is personalized, telling exactly where the given book went. It’s a tangible reminder of the importance of giving back—one the child will see every time he picks up that book. rederic Tudor, Tudor most agreed, was a bit odd. Living in Charleston, South Carolina, in the 1810s, the self-educated New Englander would show up for dinner at his boardinghouse dressed in a flashy blue frock coat carrying a 4-gallon cooler jar filled with ice water. His quixotic plan was to sell pond ice from his native Massachusetts all over the world. Using ice was rare at the time. Some considered it mysterious, even sacrilegious, although in many ways ice had been a commodity for millennia. In 1700 B.C. an underground pit near the Euphrates River was used to store imported ice; in 600 B.C. Chinese rulers built icehouses to store provisions; and Ancient Romans filled buckets with ice chips to chill wine. But these luxuries were limited to the rich and powerful. Most had little access to cooling, and as a result people ate fewer fresh foods. Urban growth was in part curbed by the inability to distribute agricultural products to city dwellers without much of it spoiling.
Sure, we live in a now culture, but the old adage still rings true: Good things take time. On the following pages, discover 12 things that are worth waiting for.
RUNNING THE NYC MAR ATHON the wait: 1 year Entry often requires running nine other races and volunteering at one.
THE 2017 SOL AR ECLIPSE the wait: 2.5 years It’s the first with prime U.S. viewing since 1979.
Frederic Tudor
Tudor aimed to change that, but he first embarked on a series of quests to prove the value of frozen water, including teaching people on the Caribbean island of Martinique how to make ice cream. Eventually, he hooked so many people that horse-drawn ice cutters were hurriedly crisscrossing frozen New England rivers and lakes to keep up with demand. The blocks were packed in sawdust and shipped to South America, India, and China. Queen Victoria was partial to ice from Massachusetts’ Wenham Lake. Tudor became known as the Ice King. He made a fortune. More than anyone, Americans became addicted. Southerners took to frosty mint juleps, and folks across the country developed a taste for cold German lagers. More than a hundred ice house storage facilities lined the Hudson River between New York City and Albany. Icemen made daily rounds replenishing customers’ iceboxes, and rival companies smashed up each others’ crops with ice-breaking steamships. “Ice is an American institution—the use of it an American luxury—the abuse of it an American failing,” declared the De Bow’s Review in 1855. Americans harvested 8 million tons of ice in 1879 (3 million melted before reaching customers). By the early 20th century, New Yorkers feared ice famines during warm winters, and electric refrigerators were adopted in the 1920s and ’30s, far earlier than in Europe. This ended the ice trade—until now. The Tudor Ice Company, a Florida operation that counts Frederic Tudor’s greatgreat-great-grandson as a shareholder, has developed prefilled containers that, once frozen, produce perfectly shaped, slow-melting ice cubes. “We are literally creating an entirely new category,” says Tudor Ice CEO (and non-Tudor) Nestor Villalobos. “I never thought I would be disrupting the ice industry.” Will Tudor Ice transform the world just as Tudor did with his ships full of frozen pond water? Only time will tell. Joel is co-author of The Humor Code: A Global Search for What Makes Things Funny Funny. march 2015 southwest 59

ou are sitting on a park bench. The man next to you turns—you haven’t noticed him before—and with great drama in his voice he says, “I have 29-year-old hot dogs in my freezer.” The words carry menace on first hearing, as if the man’s relationship to time, customary behavior, and best food practices have been all twisted up. Perhaps he’s suggesting that you might also like to end up in his freezer. The context and content of his words are bewildering. He keeps talking. The hot dogs were leftovers from his high school graduation party, the last innocent moment in his memory. They came from the deli that had the great pickles and pastrami. They

were handmade and connected with string by the rickety, thin, silent man who worked in the back. For most of their subsequent life the hot dogs remained where they were placed at the end of the party: in his mother’s freezer. Because you’re charitable you recognize the hot dogs as his madeleines, totems containing lost memories he’s working to get back. But still: They’re ancient. If hot dogs are too old to eat, are they hot dogs any longer? What kind of man happily keeps them in his freezer? And for that matter, what kind of mother calls her son one day, decades after that graduation party, and says, “I have these four hot dogs, do you want them?”

y mother is a collector, not only of hot dogs—just those four, as far as I know— but of many things, thousands of things in dozens of collections she’s arranged around her. When she’s absent from her house, she’s still present, revealed in relief by what’s contained by her shelves and walls and boxes. She’s collected objects as long as I can remember, and her tastes are eclectic: Sandwich glass, apple peelers, carved wooden tomtar from Sweden, Japanese woodblock prints, anything shaped like a pig, all of her children’s school papers, Southeast Asian hats, 19th-century Danish landscape paintings, Madame Alexander dolls, 18thand 19th-century silver tableware made in Maryland, first edition books, carved gourds. I’m forgetting a lot. Not very long ago she and I had a conversation that went something like this: “Mom, your attic is insane.” “Why?” “It’s just jammed. I’m just saying. Very full. Unreasonably so.” “I know what you’re thinking, and I’m not. I am not a hoarder.” “Of course you’re not.” “I know the story of every single thing in this house. That’s the difference.” “What is?” “The story!” It’s been tempting over the decades to poke fun at her. To the untrained eye that’s what all of my mother’s stuff might look like: a hoarder’s dream, a life’s bricolage by a woman not right in the head. But she does know the story of every object. She knows where they came from, who made them, the circumstances of their making, and the time and place they came into her life. She feels things about the objects in her
collections. They speak to her. They mark specific moments in her passage through time. This might not make sense if you grew up in a house where everything matched like it did in the catalog. But there’s an empathic leap in there, something that transforms the cold, inanimate thing into a memory of past life. “I got that in Taiwan when you were a baby!” she says to me about a Christmas ornament. By this she means: How dare you forget?

er first collection consisted of Archie comics she’d pick up at the corner store in Royal Oak, Michigan, every other month. They sit in the attic now, almost 70 years later, tied up in twine. I remembered this recently when she admitted that birthdays were difficult for her now, and worse every year. She’s about to turn 74. Seventy was easier, she said, but 74? She sounded afraid. She asked me not to talk about it anymore. There’s really no room in her house for more collections. She has all she’s going to have. She’s become very excited about my daughters’ doll collections and adds to them by long-distance mail. Her granddaughters are now satellites in an outsourcing operation. When the family is together, we go to the doll store 20 miles away and have a nice lunch afterward. She has a knack, embarrassing when I was young, of turning these sorts of outings into productions. Things are planned out and mapped, itineraries are written, provisions are packed. For a long time I misunderstood this impulse of hers, until I came to see it not as a mania for control but as an understanding of memory, of the way to make things so impossible to forget that they thwart time and live on without aging. When we’re together now, her most common question begins, “Do you remember where we got that … ” I’m sorry to say that I often don’t remember, and in those moments I feel cruel, like I’m killing something. Most of the time I see only gray mist, what the novelist W. G. Sebald called the blind spot, a vestigial image of the past’s ruins. Sometimes I do remember but tell her I don’t because I’m older now and understand something about collecting and memory. I insist I’ve forgotten so she’ll have to recount the story in all its detail. The possessor of the memory gets to travel in time, and in her telling she incants it back into existence. My mother, like most of us, is happiest this way. et’s say you’ve served time in prison and are eligible to be considered for parole. Your future belongs to eight parole judges. Have you reformed? Consider the possible criteria on which to base this decision: prison conduct, prior offenses, employment history; the list goes on. Yet the factor that most affects the judges’ decision: hunger. That’s according to a 2010 study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

She recently brought my first suit to our house as a potential costume for my daughters, ages 11 and 7. She thought they could make something of it, which was unlikely. But it resurrected something I’d forgotten. The blue, lightly pinstriped ensemble was bought for my junior high school dance, an event my mother prepared me for by teaching me the box step in the kitchen underneath her apple peeler collection. The night of the dance my date left me as soon as we arrived. I didn’t understand until later that I’d been useful as a social conveyance and that she’d prefer to hang out with her girlfriends. In retrospect I believe she had a better time because of it; I was a nervous, flop-sweating mope in those days. When I got home, Mom was waiting up for me. She could tell I was upset, and we stayed up late at the kitchen table talking about love. I remember feeling OK when I went to sleep. I’m not sure why, but we haven’t talked like that since. When she handed the suit to my daughters, she looked at me. Do you know what this is? her expression begged. Soon I couldn’t quit thinking about it. I didn’t remember the hot dogs when she called. My first reaction, unspoken, was to tell her to throw them out, but I hesitated. Something caught, some gear engaged, and this habit of holding on that I’d long teased her about revealed itself as something also churning away in me. I didn’t remember the hot dogs, but I did remember the party. This was before I joined the Marines, before the Gulf War and Somalia, before I vagabonded from newspaper to newspaper, job to job, around the country, certain I’d find my spot in the next place but never quite, not until I just decided to stop moving on. This was before I partied a decade into a blur, before my friends went back to war without me, before we left the hospital with a baby in our car and I realized no one was stopping me, that I was trusted with no good reason I could understand. That party back in 1986 was a threshold moment, when all hadn’t yet been written in time. Some trace of that moment had survived in my mother’s freezer. And so I said, “Hell yes, I’ll take those hot dogs,” and my mother drove them six hours in a cooler for the handoff. When we made the transfer I knew I was my mother’s son, that I would remember us, and that she had given me a method of disrupting and collapsing time when it all becomes too much. Time travel, a sort of immortality, is possible under certain conditions. May we never forget. Parole approval rates peaked at 65 percent after the judges’ meal breaks, then steadily declined and nearly hit zero just before the next meal. Humans are notoriously bad at predictions. Charlie Chaplin believed cinema was a fad. There’s that music executive who told the Beatles to take a hike. And remember the Y2K collapse? Machines don’t get hungry, which is one reason they’re increasingly relied upon to make crucial decisions about the future. Last year the venture capital firm Deep Knowledge Ventures appointed an algorithm to its board of directors—historically a very human position. It uncovers trends and recommends biotechnology companies worth an investment by surveying a depth of data unfeasible for human beings. Of course, algorithms existed long before there were computers. Astronomers used stepby-step sets of operations to predict the motions of heavenly bodies as early as the ninth century. Yet, increasingly, machines are used to compute complex algorithms that help make decisions about the future. And they have burrowed into almost every facet of life. Think dating sites, school curricula, and the insurance industry. Predictive policing algorithms forecast the likelihood of crimes. The film script consultancy Epagogix calculates

which movies will be box-office hits. Diagnostic algorithms may one day replace some physicians. But algorithms pose a distinctly human challenge: They can be as biased as we are. Take the Filter Bubble effect. A search engine only provides the answers it believes you want, so your political stance (determined by your past search history) affects your Google results. By flattering your own personal leanings rather than challenging them, search engines aren’t predicting your behavior; they’re making you more predictable. No algorithm has yet been devised that forecasts what future algorithms will do. Only a decade ago it seemed impossible that an algorithm would ever drive a car. Now Google has a fleet of self-driving vehicles. The same is true for medicine, complex legal work, high-quality translation, and the creation of art—none of which we ever thought computers capable of mastering, yet all of which are currently subject to an algorithmic shake-up. Can we predict what those changes will be a decade from now? Not yet. But if it ever happens, we can reasonably predict that it won’t be influenced by an empty stomach. harmony, thousands upon thousands of tiny movements orchestrated with an almost unfathomable precision. He’s examining the dial of a mechanical wristwatch, one he built by hand, and there’s a problem. He shuffles over to a microscope to zoom in closer. The timing is off. With tweezers he adjusts the hairspring, a tiny piece of coiled steel that regulates the tick and the tock. Like a beating heart, it expands and contracts 18,000 times per hour. He moves it by the hundredth of a millimeter. This morning he shut his apartment door at half past 7, drove 7.7 miles in 15 minutes, and reached the Richemont Technical Center, a lowslung, glass-walled building on the far northeastern edge of Fort Worth, Texas, with time to spare. He swiped his security badge to enter and hung a left through the doors labeled “North American Institute of Swiss Watchmaking.” After donning his white lab coat, he entered the classroom and took exactly 14 steps to his seat. Class began promptly at 8 a.m. That was three hours and six minutes ago. While Joseph fiddles with the hairspring, the instructor, Russell Peddy, reminds students that their next exam is in 23 days. “There’s a lot to do and not a lot of time. We’ve got some time, but use the time wisely, and put in the time to get as many repetitions as possible.” Here, pupils are taught to dismember, repair, and reassemble watches that start around $5,000 but can cost much, much more (Vacheron Constantin recently debuted a 260th-anniversary limited edition that retails for $369,200). It’s one

At one point this knowledge was endangered. The Swiss watch market declined drastically during the 1970s and ’80s, when the technology emerged to mass-produce clocks that used electronic oscillators—regulated by quartz crystal—to keep more accurate time. Watchmaking schools were shuttered, and people stopped learning the craft. But higher-ups at the thriving young Swatch brand decided to use their success to revive the mechanical industry, prompting a resurgence of Swiss watches. Demand for expert watchmakers returned, and in 2008 the North American Institute of Swiss Watchmaking was born. The market continues to prosper, now exceeding $20 billion annually and far outpacing quartz sales, according to the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry. The NAIOSW expanded their incoming class for the first time this year to help meet the demand. For many in the industry, it boils down to simple economics. There’s a profit to be had. But for watchmakers it’s something altogether different. They become part surgeon, part sculptor, and part mechanic. And over the course of the twoyear, 3,000-hour academy, they come to understand things the rest of the world doesn’t.

of about a dozen schools worldwide to partner with the renowned Watchmakers of Switzerland Training and Education Programme. The tuition and tools are free, subsidized by Richemont, the parent company of luxury brands like Vacheron Constantin, Cartier, and Piaget. More than 200 applied for the six spots in Joseph’s class. In a few months they’ll take final exams, which are graded by Swiss officiates, and eventually earn six-figure salaries. The students, four men and two women, range in age from late 20s to mid-50s, and all are on their second career. One owned a retail packaging company for two decades; another was an audiologist. Unwittingly, they’ve become the focus of every social gathering they attend. In most industries consumers pay premium prices for the latest in high tech, but timepieces are the opposite. High-end watches utilize technology that hasn’t changed in hundreds of years. There are no batteries or electronics. Nothing is automated. Assembly is a completely human process. And few owners of fine watches ever glimpse the hand-carved touches that set their pieces apart—uniquely engraved gears and individually placed pink and purple gems. The beauty is truly on the inside. 68 southwest march 2015

oseph, now 38, was a teenager when his uncle handed him a wrench and taught him to change the spark plugs on his 1977 Monte Carlo. Ever since, he has fixated on details. He has to know how things work, how the gears of life rotate and fit together. He signed up for the Air Force after high school because it “seemed kind of gnarly” and was deployed to Kuwait in 1997, where he manned a missile warning system, tracking Scuds in a command post. While on break one day he flipped through a magazine and was drawn to an ad for a silver Concord Chronograph watch. He did some research and learned it was a Swiss mechanical—technology he’d assumed was extinct. He was surrounded by cutting-edge military machinery and still he wondered, How did we as humans achieve this? More than four centuries earlier, a 19-year-old student named Galileo Galilei attended prayers one afternoon at the Pisa Cathedral. In the midst of the service, he became entranced by the regular swaying motion of an altar lamp. He noticed that it took the same amount of time to seesaw from side to side no matter how large its arc. As the lamp slowed, the size of its arc decreased, and vice versa. Later, he confirmed this using

the best timing system he could find—his own heartbeat. Decades passed, but Galileo eventually combined his vast knowledge of physics, astronomy, and maritime navigation to develop the most accurate timing system the world had ever known: the pendulum clock. At its core, the watch Joseph discovered in the glossy magazine used the same basic technology. It became his life’s goal to own one. He saved for years—that particular watch retailed for around $10,000—and then found a deal on a used one in 2002. When it arrived in the mail, he cradled it in his palm and was amazed at its weight. He held it to his ear and was fascinated by the sound. He longed to know the mysteries beneath its surface. “It was a weird moment for me,” he says. “I looked at it as this tiny miracle.” Years later, he was providing tech support for military operations in the Horn of Africa when that moment’s true significance revealed itself. He still enjoyed the challenge of troubleshooting and debugging IT issues, but he’d begun to spend too much time on the phone debating budget numbers with Pentagon officials. He resolved to leave and study the thing he’d yearned to do all along. “This is my destiny,” he says. “This is what I was meant for.” march 2015 southwest 69

hat is time? The question seems most appropriate for slackers with disheveled hair and intellectual savants with, well, disheveled hair. Aristotle struggled to define it, and Isaac Newton had it all wrong. In a research paper, the renowned physicist John Archibald Wheeler offered up a line he read on the bathroom wall of the Pecan Street Cafe in Austin, Texas: “Time is nature’s way to keep everything from happening all at once.” Bound up in this question is an investigation that gets to the core of our humanity: Where did we come from? Where are we going? And really: Who are we? At the turn of the 20th century Einstein upended our understanding of time. He argued that our conception is subject to experiences with recurring, rhythmic phenomena: swinging pendulums, ticking clocks, orbits and revolutions of planets and moons. It’s relative to the observer, so it’s subjective, and keeping time is really a matter of simultaneity. “If, for instance, I say, ‘That train arrives here at seven o’clock,’ I mean something like this: ‘The pointing of the small hand of my watch to seven and the arrival of the train are simultaneous events,’” Einstein wrote. Among physicists and philosophers the debate rages on, but NAIOSW watch instructor Stanley McMahan makes nearly the same claim: “Watches don’t tell the time. They synchronize with the time standard. That used to be the sun, and now it’s the atomic clock.” Stanley, who is famous for his attention to detail, teaches first-year students. One, a retired podiatrist, once told him, “Every surgeon ought to be a watchmaker for a little while so they can know what precision is.” Students arrive with neither the hand-skills nor mental acuity required for watchmaking. One of their first tasks is a test of patience as much as dexterity: Take a cylindrical steel rod and file it down to a perfect 15-millimeter cube. By hand. It takes about a week. And they’re also judged on the cube’s beveled edges and overall finish. Perhaps the real miracle within these walls is that students aren’t constantly smashing little pieces of metal out of frustration. “It’s tempting,” one quips. “Especially when the instructors aren’t looking.” Yet they find that their minds evolve in ways they could never have imagined. They analyze

the world around them more closely. They become obsessive about cleanliness and organization. (One student remounted the uneven pictures on the wall at her sister’s house.) “It changes you,” Joseph says. “When you’re doing this stuff, time flies. We’re in there for nine hours, and it feels like 30 minutes. It’s almost like a dream state. Your senses become heightened so that you can feel those microchanges.” As the world spins around them, becoming ever more complex and hectic, the students labor monk-like, in silence, using wood-tipped tweezers to handle sensitive materials, striving for perfection. It’s a meditative, Zen-like pursuit. Joseph has yet to solve the timing discrepancy with his watch, so he continues seeking out the root of the problem. He’s discussed it with both instructors, who then discussed it for an hour over lunch. They’re still unsure what’s going on. Could be something they’ve never encountered before, which is telling considering their 60 years of combined experience. “That’d be awesome if that was the case,” Stanley says.

She’s the middle child between two boys, and she was the only one of the three that really lit up when her dad, an engraver, introduced them to the tools in his workshop. He always took the time to teach her new things. She relished the time spent with him this way, and she shared his patient disposition. She would sit on the garage floor for hours and sand wooden bowls, cups, and toy mice with big leather ears. While working in the classroom, Karin often pauses to reflect on her good fortune. “Every day I come here, it feels like I’m walking into a dream,” she says. “But it’s real, and it’s amazing.” Co. Jewelers. Her dad’s engraving business was housed in the building’s basement, and she got to eat lunch with him every day. She was promoted quickly because she had a knack for repairing things, and one day the shop sent her to a watchmaking seminar so she could explain to customers the inner workings of their finest timepieces. There, she was taught how to reassemble a mechanical watch. While those around her lost parts and complained it was an impossible task,
Karin calmly pieced things together. She felt like she was back in her dad’s shop. Afterward, one of the trainers approached her. “You have watchmaker’s hands,” she told her. “You should come to my school.” Six months later she was in Fort Worth at the NAIOSW. “It kind of all fell together in this magical, this-cannot-be-a-coincidence kind of way,” Karin says. Now 27, sitting in the classroom, her pink hair a stark contrast to the white lab coats and austere environment surrounding her, she often pauses to reflect on her good fortune. “Every day I come here, it feels like I’m walking into a dream. But it’s real, and it’s amazing.” In the wake of Galileo’s pendulum epiphany, the production of watches created a talent pool for manufacturing that would prove
vital when the Industrial Revolution arrived. In How We Got to Now, historian Steven Johnson argues that watchmakers were the pioneers of industrial engineering. Galileo’s invention also enabled the emergence of the new working day. Industrial factories demanded a strictly regimented, predictable workforce. This fundamentally altered the human conception of time. Natural rhythms were replaced with an artificial grid. For many factory laborers, like those famously described by Charles Dickens, the forceful application of this grid had a dark side. But for everyone involved it was a dramatic shift. It’s one thing to be born into a world regulated by clocks; it’s quite another to experience the clockwork day as a revolution. The world began to speed up. The Industrial Revolution eventually led to the invention of the quartz clock, whose remarkable accuracy gave rise to modern computing. “Computer chips are masters of time

discipline,” Johnson writes, and thus required the precision of quartz to function. With quartz, however, came the realization that the length of a day wasn’t as constant as previously assumed. Thus a new rhythmic phenomena was needed, and scientists turned to the electrons oscillating around the smallest chemical unit known to man: the atom. Atomic clocks arrived in the 1950s, capable of measuring time to the nanosecond—the same standard you use each time you check your smartphone. “You don’t need to know any of these things to tell the time now,” Johnson writes, “but that’s the way progress works: the more we build up these vast repositories of scientific and technological understanding, the more we conceal them.” But “progress” can be a misnomer. Does the digital age bring with it time for more, or time for less? We are shielded from boredom, from the changing of the seasons, from the sound of our beating hearts, from the ticking of the clock. But if we never observe the rotating gears and the swinging pendulum, how much life will pass us by before we pause to wonder: Where has all the time gone? “It’s incredible to think about the fact that these are skills most people in the world today have forgotten, or have never learned, and only their ancestors knew how to do,” Karin says. “And yet we get to learn that right here and now.” For Karin, there’s a particular moment that makes her fall in love with the craft all over again: when she replaces the final piece on a repaired watch and what was lifeless is reborn. “When the watch springs back to life—when its heart starts beating again—my heart races,” she says. “It never stops being exciting.” JK Nickell is the associate editor of Southwest: The Magazine.

“ Finally, I have
my life back.”
Kit’s
STORY Three years ago I was experiencing chronic migraines. I was taking a preventative antiseizure medicine that was not helping and, was warned, could do major damage to my liver. I was also taking the maximum dose of medicine to help my severe daily acid reflux, which was not helping. The doctor said the only remaining option was to do surgery and make “corrections” to my digestive system! Yikes!
I was 42 and felt like I was trapped in the body of an 80-year-old woman! I was suffering with constant extreme fatigue, my joints ached all the time, I was 40 pounds overweight, and my desire for most anything was gone. After my hysterectomy, I began suffering with hot flashes and night sweats that were non-stop. I had been through MRIs, blood tests, upper and lower GI tests, and so many more I cannot even begin to list.
Luckily, at a day spa one day, a woman told me of her struggles and how the Hotze Health & Wellness Center had helped her. Hallelujah! Could this be the answer to my prayers? I went to see Dr. Hotze and told him of ALL my problems. He smiled and said “It’s all going to be OK. We can definitely help you”.
Now I feel like a vibrant, joyful 45-year old woman with my whole life ahead of me. After completing Dr. Hotze’s yeast-free eating program, I lost 35 pounds and was able to get off all the medicine for the acid reflux! Now I am on bioidentical hormone therapy, natural thyroid and cortisol and no longer take ANY medicine for migraines and rarely get one!! I have energy, am well rested and look forward to each day that I am blessed with. Thanks to the doctors and staff at the Center, I have my life back!

FULL-SERVICE RESTAURANTS
That’s because, according to a report released in January for the International Franchise Association Educational Foundation, franchises are projected to grow at a faster clip than the rest of the U.S. economy for the fifth year in a row. The Franchise Business Economic Outlook for 2015, prepared by IHS Economics, indicates more than 12,000 new franchise establishments are expected to open this year, creating some 247,000 new jobs and increasing total output over last year’s by $45 billion. Let’s take a look at four lines of business expected to prosper in 2015: Full-service restaurants, personal services, automotive, and commercial and residential services.
When most people think of franchises, they conjure up images of fast-food burger establishments and coffee shops. Indeed, with more than 155,000 (and counting) quickservice restaurants in the U.S., these chains often lead the way in all statistical growth categories. But sitdown joints aren’t far behind. Full-service restaurants are expected to add around 427 new locations this year. Tilted Kilt, affectionately tagged with the line “the best looking sports pub you’ve ever seen,” plans to open 25 new restaurants in 2015, following 23 openings in 2014. Their secret? More than just Irish luck. “We work hand in hand with our area developer partners across North America to find high-quality franchisees

LunchBOX (A WAXING SALON):
Smooth Operators FOUNDER + CEO DEBI LANE TALKS ABOUT WHY THE FULL-SERVICE SPEEDWAXING SALON IS ATTRACTING HEAVY HITTERS IN THE FRANCHISE INDUSTRY WHEN DEBI LANE took her chic-and-cheeky wax-only salon concept from a private business to the franchise arena, she imagined bright, confident women opening up their own LunchBOX (A WAXING SALON) franchises in thriving, progressive communities. The first two franchisees confirmed her vision, as areas in Idaho and Oregon sold quickly, one to a woman with decades of salon experience and the other to the former director of women’s services at Portland State University.
“A modern place with a playful vibe that’s dedicated to nothing but someone’s comfort and waxing needs makes sense for consumers and business owners,” said Lane, who opened the first LunchBOX salon in 2010 when she realized waxing was increasing in popularity but was still generally an after-thought at salons. “Behind our expertly trained waxologists, thoughtfully designed salons and specially formulated products is a knowledgeable, energetic team that guides each LunchBOX franchisee every step of the way.” A growing industry and virtually untapped emerging demographic adds to the appeal. IBISWorld projects the waxing industry to grow at an average annual rate of 3.5 percent through 2017 as the female market expands to include teens and Baby Boomers. Complementing that loyal base are men who are hopping on the hairless bandwagon. An askmen.com survey polled 1,000 men, and a staggering 95 percent said manscaping is part of their regular regimen. Although about half of the services booked at LunchBOX are Brazilians (and the eyebrow-raising logo boasts a woman toting a carefully placed lunchbox), the salons cater to men as well as women and offer a full menu of waxing services – from bottoms to brows, chins to chests – a little (like ears) or a lot (from tip to tail).
“A modern place with a playful vibe that’s dedicated to nothing but someone’s comfort and waxing needs makes sense for consumers and business owners,” said Lane, who opened the first LunchBOX salon in 2010...”
Now they are joining LunchBOX, which in a year has inked deals for more than 70 salons in 11 states coast to coast and Puerto Rico. So, why are savvy entrepreneurs getting behind the LunchBOX brand?
Then something Lane hadn’t predicted happened – and it was really, really good. This fledgling franchise began to attract heavy hitters – the kinds of people who enjoy tremendous success as franchisees of huge, international brands. We’re talking the kinds of places that attract millions of people each year with have-ityour way hamburgers and the cult appeal of drive-in ice.
LunchBOX seeks qualified franchisees to own salons in affluent communities in 30 states, including Washington, Illinois and Pennsylvania. For more information, visit lunchboxfranchise.com. Contact Information:

Cronhardt says they recently signed a five-store deal in Spain and expect to open their first pub there later this year. PERSONAL SERVICES
The diverse array of businesses in the personal services industry—like child care, senior care, and personal grooming—are also experiencing growth, in large part because of
consistent demand. Last year in the U.S., more than 15 million children under the age of 6 potentially needed child care services, according to Child Care Aware of America. Kiddie Academy, a privately owned educational child care company with 130 franchise units across the country, is steadily expanding to meet the need for high-quality care. “We continually invest in our programs and services to meet and exceed education standards and parent expectations,” says Greg White, vice president of franchise development. “This translates into a business that is not only financially fulfilling but also provides the

work-life harmony that so many of our franchisees are seeking when they join our community.” On the other end of the age spectrum, some 10,000 baby boomers a day are turning 65, and the senior population is expected to nearly double between now and 2050. And because a vast majority of these seniors—nine out of 10— have expressed a desire to stay in their homes for as long as possible, companies like Home Care Assistance are catering to their wishes with one-on-one, in-home care. Home Care Assistance offers a live-in option in which caregivers provide 24/7 support, as well as an hourly care option, which makes caregivers available on an as-needed basis. Jack Johnson, vice president of franchising, says Home Care Assistance has trained people from all walks of life—from homemakers to executives—to run their own operation. He says the company’s innovative marketing program, which taps into every available marketing channel, has jump-started business for these franchisees. BrightStar Care, which has been franchising since 2005, currently has more than 270 agencies open across the country. As part of its franchise agreement, Tony Padulo, executive vice president of domestic and international development, says each BrightStar agency is required to obtain accreditation by the Joint Commission, the same seal of approval required by more than 20,000 health care organizations. “Because our caregivers are all certified and all of our agencies are accredited, we can truly offer our clients a full continuum of care— from basic companionship to more skilled medical care,” Padulo says. “This is what sets us apart from others in the in-home care industry.” For Kiran Yocom, chairwoman and co-founder of Seniors Helping Seniors, what sets apart her

Based on total gross earnings reported by franchisees open for at least 12 months as of Jan 01, 2015. 3. Calculated by subtracting gross costs for the 4 main cost categories (fuel, labor, utilities, supplies) from the gross revenues, then dividing by gross revenue. Other costs must be taken into account when determining net profit. These figures are based on actual markets and individual results may vary.

in-home care company boils down to philosophy: “We want to bring people on board who genuinely want to do good first and then make money, people who have a loving heart and believe in something really big,” she says. Caregivers are fellow seniors who offer companionship in the home

As cases of dangerous insect-borne illnesses continue to be reported, demand is high for pest-control services. and provide services like cooking, gardening, and transportation. Since launching in 1998, Seniors Helping Seniors has grown substantially across the country, but Yocom says the company has remained rooted in its principles of compassion, love, and a belief in God. “The company is truly rapidly growing,” she says. “Today we have over 250 franchises, but our goal is to grow with dignity and character.” A little character goes a long way toward thriving in the $7 billion beauty industry as well. Just ask LunchBOX, an edgy wax-only salon concept that opened in Boise in 2010 when personal waxing began growing in popularity. The salon’s vibe is not only attracting a variety
food concept in Idaho, now own LunchBOX salons in Utah. “There’s huge buzz around the LunchBOX brand. It’s fresh, clean, and hip,” Scott says. “When we were looking for a new venture, they kept coming up. They’re the best at what they do, from the service they provide to the way they run their business.” AUTOMOTIVE
As the economy continues its recovery and the demand for shipping goods increases, trucking companies are investing in new vehicles as well as in the maintenance of their current fleets. As a result, output in the automotive sector is projected to increase 4.3 percent over 2014 figures.

Fleet Clean USA, a truck-washing service for commercial and private fleets, has shown steady growth since its founding in 2009. According to the organization’s president, Scott Marr, the company began Fleet Clean USA utilizes hand brushes for a safe, detailed clean.
2014 with three franchise locations; by year-end, they had nine. “Now is a great time to join Fleet Clean because we have a proven track record of success,” Marr says. “But there are still a number of great territories available for immediate development.” COMMERCIAL AND RESIDENTIAL SERVICES
This year is also looking up for businesses offering commercial and residential services, everything from pavement maintenance to pest control. The number of new franchises in this sector is expected to increase by 1.6 percent over 2014, on pace with the average for all franchise types. As cases of dangerous insectborne illnesses, like West Nile and Chikungunya, continue to be reported, demand is high for pestcontrol services like the ones offered by Mosquito Joe. Propelled by colorful, humorous marketing tactics and a growing awareness of the need for Mosquito Joe’s treatments, the company has seen rapid growth with more than 100 territories sold
in just two years of franchising. “The only constraint we place on our growth is our ability to find quality franchisees,” says CEO Kevin Wilson. “When we ask our franchisees why they choose to partner with us, the recurring response includes the strength and commitment of the management team, the best-in-class branding and marketing, the support systems
in place, and the opportunity to make a strong income over time while working just seven or eight months out of the year.” For some businesses, like SealMaster—a one-stop source for pavement maintenance products, equipment, and tools—the number of new franchises per year isn’t necessarily the best measure of growth. According to Debbie Hufford,

national communications manager, SealMaster has 33 protected franchise territories across the U.S.—defined by population and potential—and that number will be capped at around 48. Because each franchisee has the ability to take full advantage of their territory, Hufford says earning potential is one of SealMaster’s biggest draws. “Over the next five to 10 years, we expect consistent revenue growth of at least 9 percent, likely more given the emphasis on pavement preservation,” she says. “You really can’t drive anywhere without seeing asphalt that needs to be maintained. Ours is a recessionproof business.” Whatever your motivations are, spend time researching franchise opportunities that match your budget, experience, interests, and goals. Doing so is sure to pay dividends.
Kiddie Academy has provided educational building blocks for children since 1981.
Building a successful business in childcare. Building a better life and a better community. Before owning a Kiddie Academy franchise, Katie and Larry Moore were up-and-coming business professionals. Katie brings more than 10 years of experience working for a large payroll corporation while Larry remains a prominent player at the Chicago Board of Trade. As the parents of two children, they struggled to find a satisfactory
daycare in the area. It was during their search that they decided to embark on a lifelong dream of owning a business. The Moores fell in love with Kiddie Academy, as they believe the franchise possesses all of the qualities they were looking for: caring teachers, a fun atmosphere and a strong curriculum. The Moores revel in their new found sense of purpose in owning a Kiddie Academy franchise. Their children have also seen the perks of their parent’s new business. They’re making lots of new friends and learning essential life skills, all while under the care of their parents! Knowing their children and community are receiving the best education and child care possible has proved to be the biggest benefit of them all.

With more than 100,000 attendees, Arch City’s Asian Festival is no secret, ancient Chinese or otherwise. This year’s event fills Franklin Park near downtown Columbus with traditional music and dance performances, yoga workshops, martialarts demonstrations, a souvenir marketplace, and ethnic eats like spring rolls, fried rice, and Indonesian sate skewers. Arts, crafts, and photo exhibits honor historical and contemporary culture, while the kids’ area puts a spotlight on anime like Naruto, Bleach, and Spirited Away. And don’t miss the Asian Festival’s Dragon Boat Race on May 17: In this preview event, teams from across the Buckeye State take to the Scioto River for 300-meter sprints in lavishly decorated, 20-foot canoes, paddling to the beat of onboard drums. Roughly 600 years after Leonardo da Vinci crafted his blueprint for a robotic knight, 65 years after Isaac Asimov published his famous story collection I, Robot, and three decades after Michael Jackson sparked a global dance craze by performing The Robot, Tampa’s Museum of Science & Industry celebrates National Robotics Week with a slate of android-themed activities. In MOSI’s Idea Zone—an all-ages lab straight out of an inventor’s dream—you can design, create, and program your own automaton with help from robotics and engineering experts. Then take it for a spin on custom-made obstacle courses and racetracks to check your STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) proficiency. Even if, like the beloved C-3PO, you don’t know a power socket from a computer terminal, this is a can’t-miss opportunity to expand your imagination and learn something new. mosi.org

Honor Honest Abe The Ford’s Theatre marks the 150th anniversary of our 16th president’s assassination with The Lincoln Tribute. Attend a panel discussion or tour the museum before you attend the Tuesday night candlelight vigil, where costumed actors offer firstperson accounts of the Civil War’s end and the impact made by the president’s life and death on a nation in turmoil. At 7:22 the next morning, the exact moment of Lincoln’s passing, a wreath-laying ceremony commences on the lawn of the nearby Peterson House, where the president drew his final breaths. The theater also presents an epic musical, Freedom’s Song: Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War, as well as the special exhibit War Silent Witnesses: Artifacts of the Lincoln Assassination, where visitors can eye items like John Wilkes Booth’s pistol, Mary Todd Lincoln’s velvet cloak, and the top hat worn by the president the night of the assassination. Lincoln himself once said he hoped those who remembered him would say that he “always plucked a thistle and planted a flower where … a flower would grow.” Here’s your chance to contribute to the flourishing garden of his legacy. fordstheatre.org APRIL 22–26 BOSTON

The Knee Diaries: SJ is a 60-year-old male with the chief complaint of knee pain who visited The Center for Regenerative Medicine over a year ago. He was diagnosed with bone-on-bone osteoarthritis of the left knee, causing much pain and discomfort; at that point he was told only a total knee replacement could help him. He is otherwise healthy. On exam he had point tenderness to the medial side of the left knee (medical lingo: inner side). An X-ray showed severe arthritis of the knee (X-ray on the left). Patient started receiving treatments at The Center for Regenerative Medicine. Today he is feeling better (X-ray on the right). This is how it works: The physician introduces Cell Therapy into damaged, arthritic cells by means of a precise injection. This process is followed by several other modalities, including Collateral Artery Flow Exercises (C.A.F.E.), in order to accelerate the process. Depending on tissue damage, severity of the condition and the size of the joint that needs to be injected, people usually need a series of 1 to 6 treatments to improve. There is usually no downtime, and people can go back to their usual activities or work immediately. The treatments can help most musculoskeletal problems such as low back pain, neck pain, knee pain, shoulder pain, whiplash, sciatica, tendinitis, sprain, strains, torn ligaments and cartilage damage. Located in Miami, Florida, The Center for Regenerative Medicine includes a team of professionals that are dedicated to improve your quality of life, paving the way to enhance the science of non-surgical orthopedic medicine. World champions, sports legends, professional and amateur athletes, dancers, and people with just plain pain and arthritis go to The Center for Regenerative Medicine for nonsurgical orthopedic care. Using the facility to improve their condition, thousands of successful cases have been treated over the past nine years.

Sure, Gettysburg gets all the recognition, but New Mexico played a key, though rarely mentioned, role in preserving the Union during the War of Secession. (The soldiers there denied Texas Confederates access to the Pacific, steadfastly defended Colorado, and refused to yield California’s gold fields to surging gray troops.) At the 29th annual Battlefields & Homefronts New Mexico: The Civil War and More, the 200-acre El Rancho de las Golondrinas living-history museum highlights the Land of Enchantment’s Civil War–era conflicts and culture. Period-perfect camp life displays, brass-band music, and costumed actor–led demonstrations of weaponry, battlefield medicine, haute couture, and domestic life bring the 19th century back to the future. Remember earplugs for the 1st New Mexico Volunteer Infantry’s resounding reenactments of the Battles of Glorieta Pass and Apache Canyon, where a severely outnumbered Union army defied the Confederates’ brutal Southwest incursion. golondrinas.org

The only FAA approved harness-type child restraint approved for taxi, takeoff, turbulence and landing, it’s perfect for toddlers old enough to sit alone, but too small for the seatbelt. Franchise Ownership Reengages Former Corporate Executive’s Love for Business Gregg Balbera started climbing Wall Street’s corporate ladder over 25 years ago. “When I started it was a very personal field, focused on people and building relationships,” said Balbera. Fast forward to today, and Balbera acknowledges that much has changed over the past two decades, “The industry has become electronic, cold and impersonal,” he said. As Gregg and his wife Eileen entered their 40’s, their three sons were getting older (now ages 20, 18 and 16), and they began thinking about a different quality of life without the monotony of the same daily routine.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH
Educating and Empowering How the Arizona Foundation for Women advocates for others
GUEST SPEAKER
Former U.S. Sen. Gabrielle Giffords and husband Mark Kelly spoke at an AFW luncheon in October.
As the CEO of the Arizona Foundation for Women and the first female mayor of Flagstaff, Arizona, I stand on the shoulders of the women who came before me, and I believe in reaching back to help the next woman up the ladder. AFW has a long history of advocating effectively on behalf of women and children by educating our community and changing laws to ensure abuser accountability. One way that AFW creates positive changes for women and children is through a
program called Live & Learn, which provides mentoring and economic empowerment to women who want to improve their lives. Iris, a fulltime employee, student, and single mother, is one of the women served by Live & Learn. “I am at a point in my life where I know where I am and where I want to be,” she says. “I feel confident that I can make my educational goals a reality thanks to the support of Arizona Foundation for Women’s Live & Learn Program. If you had asked me a year ago what my plans for the future were, continuing my
education would not have been part of the answer.” Iris adds, “It’s nice to be able to connect with and encourage girls who are trying to do the same thing you are. Sometimes all you need is someone willing to believe in you.” Southwest Airlines has a passion for connecting people to what’s important in their lives, and with the airline’s support AFW has connected people like Iris to a brighter future. As the official airline of AFW, Southwest also provides airfare for police officers so that they can receive continuing education in Washington, D.C., from experts who specialize in breaking the cycles of domestic violence, human trafficking, and other crimes against women and children. Thanks for helping us make a difference, Southwest. When we work together, we can do so much more! For more information about the Arizona Foundation for Women, visit azfw.org. —Sara Presler, CEO, Arizona Foundation for Women

One Question
Miles Teller,
what piece of advice has stuck with you?
This month, Miles Teller appears in The Divergent Series: Insurgent.
PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHRISTOPHER BEYER/GETTY IMAGES
I was always a straightA student in school, but I used to get in a pretty good amount of trouble, too. One day, my dad told me, “Next time you’re in a situation and something’s going off in your head and you’re about to make a dumb decision, take a minute and think to yourself: What’s the worst possible outcome in this situation, and are you man enough to deal with it?” I still misbehave all the time, but now I do it in the movies. I used to be called a trouble maker, but now I’m called an artist.
