In September 2010, we announced plans to acquire AirTran Airways— a strategic move that would allow our two airlines to join forces and spread low fares farther. We officially closed the deal in May 2011, and we have been hard at work bringing our companies together ever since. We are in the homestretch of the integration: By the end of the year we will be one airline with one Brand, one Customer Experience, and one flight schedule—all flying

under the Southwest Airlines flag. I’m pleased to report that the integration is right on track. On the evening of December 28, AirTran Airways Flight 1 from Atlanta to Tampa, Florida, will be the carrier’s final scheduled departure. In the meantime, we will continue to operate as two brands as we transition our AirTran Employees, aircraft, and resources to Southwest. The AirTran acquisition has been the linchpin of a bold set of stra-

Customer Service in Action We recently had a firsttime flyer traveling with her family from Nashville, Tennessee, to New York City. But this was no ordinary Customer—as it turns out, she was traveling with 18 family members to celebrate her 100th birthday! When one of our Employees learned of this milestone, she proceeded to lead Customers in the gate area in singing “Happy Birthday” to this very special “young” lady. Our Employees went a step further to commemorate this first flight by presenting her with a certificate signed by the entire Crew working her flight. We’re so glad to have been part of this Customer’s celebration.

tegic initiatives designed to allow Southwest to grow on the heels of an economic recession. It has given us access to several key markets, including Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, New York’s LaGuardia Airport, and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. The acquisition has also given us the running start we needed to offer international service on Southwest, which we launched in July with service to Mexico and the Caribbean. We will close 2014 with our wholly owned subsidiary, AirTran, fully integrated into Southwest, and at that point we will serve a network of 93 destinations in five countries. This has been our top priority for the past four years, and it has been a massive undertaking—arguably the biggest in our Company’s history. I’m incredibly proud of the way that our Employees from AirTran and Southwest have come together; it’s been a marriage of kindred spirits, and I think we have set a new industry standard for integrating airlines. The end result of our work will be a stronger, better Southwest, committed to doing what we’ve always done: offering our Customers low fares, the best Customer Service in the industry, and a robust and convenient flight schedule. To all our Customers, old and new, thanks for coming along for the ride!

LUVLY LADY

Rose strives to brighten lives each day.

If we could use only three words to describe Rose Lew, we’d pick these: humble, high-spirited, and driven. Rose began her career at Southwest Airlines as a Customer Service Agent in San Jose, California, more than six years ago and quickly transitioned to the role of Station Administrator. Now she plans Company Culture events, manages community relationships, monitors finances, and supports the Station wherever else she’s needed. “Every day, I want my actions to touch someone in a positive way,” she says. Rose’s journey to Southwest proves her resoluteness. After college, she spent a few years working in human resources and then decided to stay home and raise her two children. Eighteen years later, “the kids were off to college, and I was ready to go back to work,” she says. “As I researched companies, I thought if I could find one that allowed me to travel, I would have my dream job. Once I learned more about the Culture at Southwest, I was determined to be a part of it.” Already the holder of an MBA, Rose took a few classes at a local college to learn more about the travel industry. That additional knowledge paid off. “People ask me how to get a job at Southwest, and I tell them the process is not easy.” For those who really want to work for the airline, she offers this advice: “Be persistent, and prepare to make a difference.” Rose has certainly made a difference in her time at Southwest. She assists Make-A-Wish families that visit her Station, supports families in need at the local Ronald McDonald House, and motivates her Coworkers to get involved with nonprofits in the San Jose area. When she’s not working, Rose and her husband of 33 years, Leland, jet off to destinations like Las Vegas and Seattle. “We’re now empty nesters, and the Freedom to Fly wherever and whenever we want is nice.” Thank you, Rose, for living the Southwest Way and for making a difference in the lives of people both inside and outside the Company. —Cindy Villafranca Blue Man Group is proud to give Rose Lew two tickets to a Blue Man Group show as a token of appreciation for her work and dedication. Harvey & Joanne Caras P O R T S T. L U C I E , FLO R I DA

A trip to Jerusalem changed Joanne Caras forever and sent her and her husband, fellow Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards Member Harvey Caras, on a mission that has raised more than $1 million for charities worldwide. It all began in 2005, when Joanne and her children volunteered at a pay-what-you-can restaurant in Jerusalem run by the nonprofit Carmei Ha’ir, which means “all who are hungry shall eat.” Carmei Ha’ir serves as many as 600 meals each day, mostly to those experiencing difficult life situations, including homelessness and financial troubles. Inspired by Joanne’s experience, the couple published the Holocaust Survivor Cookbook, Cookbook a collection of miraculous Holocaust survivor stories, recipes, and photos. They have since released a second book, Miracles & Meals,, and have given all proceeds from the sales of both volumes to charity. This labor of LUV has soared beyond anything Harvey and Joanne had ever dreamed, and Southwest has been beside them the entire way. To support the book, Joanne and Harvey embarked on a 50-city speaking tour—and truly fell in LUV with Southwest on the way. “We are so grateful to Southwest for connecting us to communities across the country,” Joanne says. “We feel like we are part of the Southwest Family.” The couple now has more than 275 speaking engagements under their belts, and traveling Southwest—with benefits like Bags Fly Free, No Change Fees, and the Companion Pass—has helped keep their expenses low, meaning more money can be given to nonprofits. “If a new stop is added in the middle of our book tour, we LUV that there isn’t an additional fee when we make flight changes,” Harvey says. Harvey and Joanne, thank you for giving Southwest the chance to contribute to your work by connecting you to the communities we serve. From the Editor

Dear Reader, Younger friends mistakenly think I know something about raising children, merely because two kids survived having me as their father. When they ask for tips, I like to respond by telling them about darkness training. They never ask me again. Darkness training entailed teaching my kids bravery by taking them outside in the middle of the night to look at the stars. My son, George, likes to recount a version that includes bears. You could call darkness training idiotic. I prefer to call it creative: While the technique may have been flawed, the end result—two fine young adults—was magical. Parenting is very much a form of art. A messy one, like finger painting. According to Sheril Kirshenbaum, being a parent also comes with plenty of science. Her story on page 76 includes the report that, all immediate evidence to the contrary, having kids may actually be good for you. Just don’t expect Sheril to tell you exactly how to raise your child. After all,

being a mom or dad is like performing in a comedy club. A joke that makes an audience laugh one night can easily bomb the next. Same thing with any parenting technique. It may work on one kid then totally fail with another. Case in point: When George was little, he often tried to bite his older sister, Dorothy Jr. “Use your words!” his mother and I would say to him, and eventually he caught on. Then one day, Dorothy wound up to slug her brother. “Use your words!” her mother shouted. Dorothy paused a second and then used these words: “This is going to hurt.” The moral of this story: Don’t expect one kid to teach you how to raise another. And the moral of darkness training? Don’t try this at home. —Jay Heinrichs Editorial Director

Your Words

Dear Spirit,

Upon opening the June issue of Spirit, I was & SENSIBILITY immediately intrigued by the photo caption on the I table of contents [“Scents & Sensibility”]: “Pamela Dalton is looking for links between smell and memory.” My initial thought was of my first trip to Atlantic City since childhood with my own children; the smell of the ocean brought back memories of past family vacations so vivid I had tears in my eyes. How very sad I felt for Sharon Lysinger to no longer enjoy that glorious smell! Similarly, the smell of mold and mildew makes me instantly recall my flooded home post-Katrina. Smells are powerful indeed, and it was enlightening to be reminded that the same smell can affect people differently. Thanks for the insightful article and its companion piece on planning a vacation based on scents! ODOR READER

Olfactory flashbacks led Pamela Dalton to study smell.

Smell is intimately linked to emotion, memory, and our individual experience of the world. How does this primal ability work? Scientists are still sniffing out the answer. By Annie Monjar Photography by Jared Castaldi

FIND SOMETHING calming about the smell of gasoline. When I was a kid, I used to loiter at the door of my dad’s home office on Sunday nights, begging him to take me for a drive. The stop at the gas station, fragrant with fuel, signaled that I could put my childhood anxieties aside, leaving behind untouched homework and the prospect of learning long division. Today, whenever I’m at a gas station I feel a small pang of longing—explainable only when I stop and think about how that specific scent affects me. But like most people, I rarely do. I began life

64 SPIRIT JUNE 2014

with a big breath of air, and since then I’ve taken just about every gulp, all those particles and sensory stimuli, for granted. When I consider my senses, smell comes last. I’ve never been able to tell the difference between rosemary, thyme, and marjoram. I don’t garden. I eat too fast. All tea smells like burnt, damp grass to me. And I suspect I’m not alone. The saying “stop and smell the roses,” after all, exists because we don’t often do just that. It’s no secret that, in our sensory family, smell is often overlooked. We rarely discuss it, and it gets little notice—unless it forces our attention.

VOCAB QUIZ

Annie Monjar’s story in the June issue of Spirit was a fascinating exploration of the world of smell, and it came at a time when I was becoming reacquainted with mine: During a trip to San Francisco, I noticed that I was acutely aware of the fresh, clean smell of the ocean and the pervasive, sweet smell of roses. It was as if my sense of smell was awakened in that city. But I have to object to a premise set

forth by the author: that there is no vocabulary to describe aromas, fragrances, and scents, only descriptions of how they make us feel. That is nonsense! Smells can be described as pungent, acrid, sweet, fresh, cloying, heavy, spicy, sour, rotten, yeasty, dank, moldy, and fruity, just to name a few. The author posits that we only describe fragrances by how they make us feel. I can enjoy the spicy smell of a curry, but I don’t feel spicy; I can detect the spoiled smell of old milk, but that doesn’t make me feel spoiled. Just as an apple can be described as tart (in the author’s example), so can a scent be tart. It may be true that scents are powerfully evocative of places and memories, but it is also true that there are plenty of ways to describe them that don’t center on how they make us feel but rather how we experience the scent itself. —LESLEY GODDIN ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO

We were hoping someone would argue that! You make an excellent point, but let us challenge you right back: The terms you use get shared with taste, don’t they? (We swear we once heard a sommelier use every one of them to describe a bottle of Bordeaux.) Can you come up with a term that applies solely to smell?

HEAPS OF NOSTALGIA

Halfway through Annie Monjar’s article, “Scents & Sensibility,” in the June edition of Spirit, I was overcome by emotion upon remembering my most vivid example of “olfactoryevoked recall.” About 15 years ago, when I was in my late 40s or early 50s, I was working in my front flowerbeds. The last step was spreading the cypress mulch, and as I began a feeling of near euphoria came over me. At some point I realized that this feeling was due to the aroma of cypress, which had evoked memories of fishing with my dad and younger brother in my early teens. When I finished in the garden that day, I sat down and wrote a long letter to my dad, telling him about the experience and what a wonderful father he had been throughout my life. My dad passed away a little over a year ago, and though I certainly mourned him, “Scents & Sensibility” elicited one of the strongest emotional responses I have had since his passing. It was not sorrow at his loss as much as it was a repeat of the “olfactory-evoked” euphoria I experienced that summer afternoon, remembering wonderful hours on cypress-filled lakes with my dad and brother. A big thank-you to Ms. Monjar and Spirit for bringing back one of my best memories! — R AY M O N D P E R R Y M E TA I R I E , L O U I S I A N A

A lovely memory, Raymond. Thank you for sharing it. RUNNING ON FUMES

I really enjoyed the article “Scents & Sensibility.” It connected with my olfactory nerve like a punch to the nose. Like the author, who mentions an emotional response to the smell of gasoline, I have a similar reaction to the smell of fuel as it’s burned in jet engines and turbine engines. The aroma often triggers an adrenaline rush. It started when I was a soldier. During Operation Desert Storm, I spent the better part of a day and

evening on the tarmac of King Fahd International Airport in Saudi Arabia, waiting on a C-130 to take me to some unknown location. Each time a large transport landed, my unit jumped up, grabbed our gear, and waited with crazy anticipation. Then, inevitably, we sat down and waited on the next one. After about 20 aircraft had come and gone, I was having a reaction similar to Pavlov’s dog—except mine was triggered by the scent of fresh exhaust from each passing plane. I finally got my flight out of KFIA, but more than 20 years later I’ve never lost the excitement associated with the smell of flying. —T Y H E N D E R S O N FULSHEAR, TEXAS

You have captured the essence of olfactory-evoked recall, Ty: At their best, smells turn us into eager dogs. HEAVEN SCENT

On my way to my first visit with my 10-day-old granddaughter, I passed the time on the short flight by reading Annie Monjar’s fascinating and informative article “Scents & Sensibility.” I’m so glad I did because it reminded me to soak up all of my granddaughter’s delicious newborn fragrances while I was holding her in my arms. She smelled heavenly. — D O N N E D AV I S M E N L O PA R K , C A L I FO R N I A

Congratulations on the birth of your granddaughter, Donne. WHAT GOES AROUND

I just wanted to pass on a hearty “well done” to Tracy Ross for her beautifully written piece on Scott Harrison and his carousel [“The Carousel of Happiness,” May 2014]. For reasons I can’t fully explain, this story left me with puddles in my eyes at just about every word. What a tender man, and what a well-told story of how he found healing through helping others. —J I M F E N S T E R M A C H E R S O U D E R T O N , P E N N S Y LVA N I A

We had the same reaction, Jim.

TIPS FROM IJL DATING EXPERT

B

elieve it or not, your computer screen may be getting in the way of your dating life. While we may use technology to stay “connected” to friends and family, when it comes to meeting potential partners, the digital world obscures the thing that matters most: chemistry.

2

To get a pulse on today’s dating scene, we talked to Cindy Herington, one of the many dating experts at It’s Just Lunch, the world’s largest personalized matchmaking service. Here she explains why you should ditch the laptop for the tabletop.

1

Ditch the Laptop

The premise of It’s Just Lunch is simple: a lunch date or drink after work is the ideal first date. It’s a no pressure, relaxed setting where you can actually talk face-to-face. “Real chemistry happens in person,” Herington says. “You may be having a great online relationship, but when you finally meet, you discover that the person you’ve spent so much time

The online buzz about It’s Just Lunch:

5 TIPS FOR MODERN DATING with in cyberspace is nothing like what you imagined.” Replace those digital emoticons with a no pressure, casual lunch date and you’ll know immediately if you should take it to the next level.

2

Get a Wingman (or Wingwoman)

It’s Just Lunch’s clients often refer to their matchmakers as their “dating wingmen” (or wingwomen) because they handle all of the dating logistics. Herington describes her role, saying, “We’re genuinely interested in understanding our clients. We listen. We really get to know your personality and what you’re looking for in that significant other.” Every IJL match is hand-selected. There’s no online profile for the world to see and it’s all confidential. After the date, It’s Just Lunch matchmakers receive feedback from each client in order to fine-tune their next match. “We offer something online services don’t: someone to talk to,” Herington says. Imagine having a full-time dating wingwoman who really understands you, working for you while you’re focusing on your career and personal obligations.

“IT’S JUST LUNCH HELPS YOU MAKE TIME FOR THE THINGS THAT MATTER...”

3

Boost Your Dating ROI

Who wants to spend hours sifting through online profiles and trying to connect via email, pokes and winks? You don’t have time to waste playing digital guessing games and meeting the wrong people. When you’re investing your time and energy in something important, you deserve a strong return. With IJL’s personalized match selection

and date coordination, clients are able to save valuable time and energy. “After we select your match, we’ll describe the person to you and confirm a convenient time and place for you to meet. All you have to do is show up and have fun meeting someone new,” Herington says. Less time searching equals more time dating. That’s realized ROI.

4

Date Smarter

Herington reminds singles who contact her that they can have a career and a relationship. They just have to “date smarter.” “If finding someone to share your life with is important to you, you can make time and have it all,” she says. “If you don’t have time to do your taxes, you hire a CPA. If you don’t have time to manage your investments, you hire a financial planner. It’s Just Lunch helps you make time for the things that matter. IJL helps you date smarter.” Since It’s Just Lunch matchmakers take care of all the matching and logistics, you can focus on finding that elusive chemistry in the offline world. IJL is a better, smarter way to date and increase your odds of finding that someone special.

“I studied architecture for seven years, and at times I found the industry to be elitist. I wanted to make design more accessible, and I thought, What better way to do that than ice cream sandwiches? We launched our first food truck in 2009, naming our sandwiches after famous architects. Now we have trucks in New York City, Los Angeles, Austin, and, most recently, Dallas. In May, we published a cookbook that also includes design facts. The blackberry ginger sorbet has a rich flavor because of the depth of the fruit, and the ginger gives it an unexpected twist. Pairing it with a double-chocolate cookie makes it taste like a chocolate-covered blackberry. We call it the Non-Dairy Frank Behry.” WHO Natasha Case, co-founder WHERE Coolhaus WEB eatcoolhaus.com

Construction Project Want to stand out? Build a reputation as an expert, says sales guru John Jantsch. How can I peg myself as an authority? “By producing content through a variety of forums, like blogging and public speaking, you’re creating what I call an ‘expert platform,’” Jantsch says. “Whether you’re selfemployed or part of a company, your goal is to find a way to differentiate yourself from the competition.” What kind of content should I provide? “Ask yourself, ‘What questions do my coworkers and clients ask me?’ It’s helpful to home in on a specific topic within your field—something you’ve developed a knack for.”

Marketing consultant John Jantsch is the author of Duct Tape Selling: Think Like a Marketer—Sell Like a Superstar.

F1_q+a_expert_am.indd 41

How do I get the word out? “For years, I produced a newsletter where I ran abstracts from my blog posts as well as ones from the 100 blogs I subscribe to. I got a lot of good feedback on that approach, and it’s one you can use in an

email or as part of a weekly roundup on a blog. Think about where the people you want to influence spend their time. That’s where you’ll make the greatest impact.” What if I don’t get any followers? “The goal is to build a lasting body of work that supports your reputation as an expert. You want to come up in search results, not get 10,000 Facebook likes.” How do I make time for this? “You simply have to recognize the value and make it a priority. You’re building a career asset in the same way some people earn their master’s degree at night. You won’t see the effects instantly, but it’s going to help you in the long run.”

Identify a Leader “Ask a colleague to keep you accountable. To ensure you actually go for that scheduled walk rather than give in to distractions, have that person knock on your door to remind you to take a break, or better yet, have him go with you.”

Tackle the Terrain “Start replacing furniture and habits that encourage sitting with ones that allow you to be upright,” says Levine. “At home, get that exercise equipment out of the basement and into your living room so you can keep moving while you watch TV. At work, schedule walking meetings rather than having them in a conference room.”

Chair Wars Dr. James Levine suggests five stand-up strategies to get you on your feet. 2

Pace Yourself “This does not have to be a daily effort year-round. When the weather is nice, bike to work and make family time revolve around an outdoor activity rather than an indoor one. But don’t force it in extreme heat or cold.”

5

Practice Forgiveness “The biggest mistake people make in all sorts of health planning is thinking that if they don’t do something 100 percent, they’ve failed. There are going to be roadblocks. If you have a hard time becoming active again after hitting an obstacle, it doesn’t mean that everything is lost.”

Though it nearly matches New Mexico in area, the geologic giant known as Tamu Plateau can be easy to overlook. That’s because it’s inactive—and located underwater, 1,000 miles east of Japan. Evidence suggests that its most recent spurt of activity took place about 145 million years ago and consisted of massive eruptions, says Dr. William Sager, a professor at the University of Houston who published a 2013 article about the vast volcano in Nature Geoscience journal. Sager says Tamu Plateau formed relatively swiftly: “We’re thinking 1 to 2 million years as opposed to tens of millions—that’s short to a geologist.” Speedy: It’s in the eye of the beholder.

of hiring managers say Tuesday is the most productive workday. Does your task list runneth over? Tackle it on Tuesday. Nearly twofifths of managers polled by staffing firm Accountemps deemed it the day to get things done. But beware of hump day, which grabbed just 14 percent of the vote. To avoid a midweek nosedive in efficiency, take a look at the big picture when planning your workweek, and truly recharge over the weekend, advises time management coach Jan Yager. “Too many of us fall into the trap of doing chores and running errands instead of spending quality time with loved ones,” she says. The laundry can wait—until Tuesday.

of us are afraid of green juice.

Despite the dread, even more of those polled in a January survey commissioned by Jamba Juice think the color is a hallmark of the healthiest freshsqueezed refreshments. It’s ironic, perhaps. But surprising? Not so much. “We are used to seeing green on a plate; green in a glass pushes most people out of their comfort zone,” says nutritional expert and dietitian Kate Geagan. If you like liquefied produce but have a strong distaste for vegetal flavors, fear not. “You can mask the bitterness of greens by blending in a little fruit, which is harder to do when you’re eating a salad,” Geagan says. We’ll drink to that.

HIT A HOME RUN with a Business that Covers all the Bases

I

t’s time to play in the major leagues and become a million-dollar hitter. But you need to be on the right team – Right at Home®, where the average franchisee topline revenue per unit is $1,033,777.1‡ Self-proclaimed serial entrepreneurs Tom and Jennifer Bollum joined the Right at Home franchise team because they wanted to make a difference. “Our last venture was helping to build a company that did extremely well financially,” Tom said. “but at the end of the day, did we improve lives?” After painstakingly researching the competitive senior home care market, the Bollums found that a Right at Home franchise was the winningest franchise team with a long-time record of upward mobility. In fact, franchisees yield an average gross margin of 37%.2‡ “Hands down, Right at Home came out on top. We wanted to take advantage of a proven franchise that provided a road map to success,” Tom said. “Mistakes are costly, and Right at

Home doesn’t let you make someone else’s mistake twice.” Statistically, the Right at Home team offers the home field advantage, with decades of healthcare experience and over 380 operating franchise locations in eight countries.

“Right at Home has exceeded our expectations on so many levels, including financially. We recently picked up a second territory.” Tom & Jennifer Bollum Right at Home Franchisees Sacramento, CA

Jennifer said, “When we hire our inhome care professionals, we ask ourselves, ‘Would we want this person taking care of our parents?’ If that answer isn’t a resounding yes, then it’s a no go.” And more and more people are needed to cover this lucrative, underserved market. One out of every eight Americans is 65 and older and has more than a 70% chance of needing help with daily activities, such as assistance with mobility, health monitoring, dressing, and transportation. By 2030, that number will increase to one out of every five.3 “Right at Home has the franchisees’ best interest at heart, so we can have our clients’ in ours,” Jennifer said. “These clients we help...they are our friends...our family.” If you want to make a major league difference in other people’s lives as well as your own, it’s time to hit a home run with a Right at Home franchise. No healthcare experience is necessary.

Jim Koch FOUNDER AND BREWER OF SAMUEL ADAMS

What’s one piece of advice that’s stuck with you? “Not long after I started the company, I was talking with my uncle about buying a computer, and he asked me why I needed one. I said something to the effect of ‘to keep track of business and bills.’ Then he asked me if I had made any sales. At this point, all the distributors in Boston had turned me down. When I told him I hadn’t sold anything, he said, ‘I’ve seen a lot of businesses go broke, and they all had plenty of computers. Sounds like you better put some cold beer in your briefcase and go out and make some sales.’ And that’s what I did. For the first six months, not only did we not have a computer, we didn’t have an office or a phone, either. We focused on the essentials: making great beer and working our tails off to sell it. Thirty years later, our strategy is the same.” Koch spearheads the company’s Brewing the American Dream program, which assists small businesses in the food and beverage industry through mentoring and financial assistance. new hires. We were constantly updating all these different systems, so I said to myself, ‘What if they were all integrated?’ That’s what Zenefits does. By connecting systems like payroll, commuter benefits, compliance, 401(k), vacation tracking, and health insurance, we give employers and employees a single site to manage everything, and we do it all for free. We make commissions from benefit providers, so we don’t have to charge for our service. And because we work with everyone, we’re not pushing any particular vendor on you. As a business you say, ‘I want to hire this person,’ and we take it from there, creating everything from offer letters to confidentiality agreements. Your employees fill everything out online. Businesses spend a lot of time focusing on paperwork instead of people. Our goal is to free them from that. When we got our first round of financing, most of our customers were tech companies. Now we have manufacturing companies, school systems, architecture firms, even a circus.” zenefits.com

IDEA

The Big Reveal In a world of viral successes, how do you unearth hidden gems?

A

BY ADAM HUNTER NYONE CAN find out who’s popular on the Web—but how do you find Laney Boggs? If you have to ask, “Who?” then you must not remember the hit teen comedy She’s All That, a 1999 Pygmalion adaptation sadly overlooked by the Oscars. A well-liked high school jock, played by an at-his-peak Freddie Prinze Jr., transforms invisible art geek Laney Boggs (Rachel Leigh Cook) into a dazzling beauty, mostly by suggesting she remove her glasses and trade her paint-spattered overalls for a formfitting red dress. Maybe it’s because I was a bit of a dork in high school, but I identified with Laney’s obvious desire to escape obscurity and be embraced by the in-crowd. The movie came to mind when I heard about Forgotify, a new website that plays songs that have not had a single listen on the wildly popular musicstreaming service Spotify. Creators Lane Jordan, Nate Gagnon, and J Hausmann came up with the idea when they learned that 20 percent of the

A precision chronograph movement with 1/10th of a second measuring capabilities works away silently under the multi leveled dial. Now available direct from the manufacturer at the astonishingly low price of $199 - a saving of $596 on the retail price of $795. So how can we make an offer like this? The answer is beautifully simple. We have no middleman to pay, no retail overheads to pay and not the usual mark-up to make, which on luxury items can be enormous. To accompany the Phantom, we have introduced the Phantom ring. With layers of rose gold plated steel and an impressive row set with our flawless Diamondeau gems, that can cut glass like a mined Diamond.

Introducing consumers to a sample from an obscure brand can lead to big purchases. tracks on Spotify—which adds up to more than 4 million songs—had gone unstreamed. Imagine that: 4 millionplus Laney Boggses out there, sacrificing clean overalls for the sake of their art, only to be ignored in favor of the Justin Biebers and Miley Cyruses and Katy Perrys. Can Forgotify be their Freddie Prinze Jr.? If the viral successes of “dorks” like Star Wars Kid and Rebecca Black are any indication, it’s not always the real-world superstars who get invited to sit at the cool kids’ table online. But in a world where Google algorithms heavily weigh popularity to decide the most relevant search results, and your Facebook newsfeed is mostly recycled clickbait published by bestof aggregators like Buzzfeed and Reddit, the average Internet user can have trouble finding content that hasn’t already been touted, promoted, and shared to death. And given that today’s social media landscape means there are more content sharers and producers than ever, that’s a problem. There may be a Rachel Leigh Cook hiding among unwatched Netflix movies or YouTube videos, unfollowed Twitter accounts, unread Laney, er, blogs. To everyone who matters, right now they’re vapor, they’re spam, a waste of perfectly good Internet space. But to paraphrase Freddie Prinze Jr. in She’s All That: Give them the right look, the right friends, and bam! In six weeks they’re the prom queen— of the Web. THE THRILL OF DISCOVERY In a sense, we’re all Freddie Prinze Jr. Who doesn’t want to find a hidden gem and make it shine? That desire, as it turns out, was the prime motivation behind Forgotify. “The discovery aspect is what most interested us—

F2_Trend_AM.indd 62

the thought of finding a diamond in the rough,” Lane Jordan says. “People want to discover things. Just the notion that ‘I know something you don’t know’ is appealing.” Forgotify is not the first attempt to provide an online tool for digging through the also-rans. In 2010, Brooklyn writer and artist Colin Fitzpatrick created a Tumblr account, Zero Views, which posted YouTube videos that, when he happened upon them, held the “0 views” distinction. Ironically, Zero Views went viral after being written up by CNN and The Huffington Post and gained thousands of views for the videos Fitzpatrick linked to. In an interview for NPR’s On the Media podcast, he said the site showed “how people commonly try to reach out and share their lives and just fail.” But when exposed to the right audience, these Laney Boggses blossomed. “These kids who had made a music video about their library card … a lot of effort had gone into this, and nobody was watching it. And as soon as I posted it, everybody was reblogging it, and it got tons of notes and likes,” Fitzpatrick said. The Zero Views method for finding these videos, however, only highlights the problem Web searchers still encounter. On YouTube, there’s no easy way to find videos that have been online for a while but haven’t been watched. Fitzpatrick’s “complicated algorithm” involved typing a dull word or phrase—like “chillin’” or “so tired”—into YouTube’s search box, then sorting by upload date. Forgotify proves that such a discovery engine isn’t that difficult to build. “We put this together really fast—from concept to completion in about a month,” Jordan says. J Hausmann, a Web developer, helped him

7/10/14 1:32 PM

formulate his original idea and solved the technical issues. Gagnon, a copywriter, came up with the name. “We launched on a Wednesday, and after it got picked up by Reddit it kinda blew up,” Jordan says. “Thursday it was on Time.com, and on Friday it was picked up by the BBC.” The initial spike in traffic caused site outages shortly after Forgotify’s lateJanuary launch, but when I tried it the service worked perfectly. I discovered “Jamie,” a song by Canadian ’80s rock band M.T.L. that sounds as if it could be from the She’s All That soundtrack. After listening, I checked out M.T.L.’s album on iTunes. How’d listeners rate it? “We have not received enough ratings to display an average for this album.” WORTH THE BET? Forgotify is not currently configured to make any money off the service it provides, and it’s too soon to say whether it will uncover a future No. 1 hit. Can it be more than a neat gimmick? “Nothing has climbed up the charts yet that I know of,” Jordan says. “But the potential is certainly there.” Curated content companies like Birchbox have proved that introducing consumers to even a small sample from an obscure or new brand can lead them to make big purchases. In 2013, Buzzfeed reported that Stila Cosmetics, which pulled out of retail outlets years ago amid flagging sales, sent a sample eye shadow palette to 7 percent of Birchbox’s subscribers and saw 11.2 percent of that group purchase the full-size product— more than 10 times the average conversion rate for the beauty industry. Just as Birchbox takes a cut of sales in return for playing matchmaker, a service like Forgotify could strike deals to receive a small percentage anytime one of its users purchases a

song. Alternatively, by getting users to rate or comment on previously unheard, unseen, unwatched content, Forgotify and its ilk can gather reams of useful data on consumer likes and dislikes—and that’s worth dollars to marketers. CLICK WITH THE RIGHT CLIQUE So how about it, entrepreneurs? In what corner of this digital high

school we call the Internet will your service help locate a worthy obscurity? While Jordan believes the Forgotify concept is best suited to professionally produced music, he sees potential for other online media too. “The obscure is what’s cool these days,” he says. “The Internet gives everyone a chance to connect with their own cliques.” How about joining the AV club

EASING THE PAIN What to Consider When Looking for a Personal Injury Lawyer We asked, they answered. Four of the top trial lawyers in the nation told us what consumers need to know when looking for a personal injury attorney. Read on to find out what they have to say about finding the right attorney for you, which lawyers to avoid and how to know if you have a case.

Q: What should I look for in a lawyer?

Q: How much will it cost me to find out if I have a case?

Q: What should I do to find the right lawyer?

Q: What should I avoid?

Make sure the lawyer has a successful track record in actual trials and has received successful trial verdicts. Ninety-five percent of cases settle, but a good attorney who is well-known by insurance companies or defense lawyers will be more likely to obtain top-dollar compensation from insurance companies because they know the attorney will take cases to trial.

Good lawyers will perform this task for nothing. If your case is viable, it will be pursued. If it is not, you will be given a good reason why you cannot pursue the case and know that you are doing the right thing for yourself and your family.

Do extensive research to find the right lawyer to represent your claim, and arrange a meeting as soon as possible. There are statutes of limitation applicable to all cases, and they vary not only by state, but also by the type of claim you have.

Avoid lawyers who do not readily give references or do not handle their own cases. Meet with the prospective lawyer. If you do not relate well to her or him, then find another.

Ask How much is my case worth? The value of a case depends on several factors, including your ability to demonstrate that a party’s wrongdoing (or “liability”) has caused you harm (or “damages”). If your lawyer establishes liability, the judge or jury may award (1) economic damages for your costs and expenses (e.g., past or future medical treatment, lost earnings, etc.); (2) general damages compensating for both the pain you endured (e.g., being burned, having a stroke, etc.) and how your life has changed (e.g., becoming a paraplegic, suffering brain damage, etc.); and (3) punitive damages, which are only awarded where a party engaged in conduct that is particularly reprehensible or involves fraud, malice or conscious disregard for the rights or safety of others.

UST BEYOND the soundproof windows of Bandon Dunes Golf Resort’s ordinarily sedate clubhouse lounge a silent movie is unspooling to the roaring delight of the couple dozen low-handicappers inside. A golfer on the other side of the glass has just lost his billfold in the 30-mph winds coming in off the Pacific, and as his cash skitters across the ground, he and a posse of caddies run after it with the comic frenzy of Keystone Kops. It’s a rare eruption of pandemonium at a place that prides itself on being blissfully removed from such disruptions. There are a lot of things that draw the avid golfer to Bandon Dunes. For starters, four of the most spectacular courses ever built in this country—Pacific Dunes, Bandon Dunes (the resort’s namesake and first course), Old Macdonald, and Bandon Trails, ranked No. 3, 6, 12, and 16 on Golf Digest’s ’s current list of the 100 greatest public golf courses in America—are arrayed like magnificent puzzle pieces on the resort’s 2,500 acres of barely tamed oceanfront. A fifth links—the breathtaking, 13-hole Bandon Preserve—is the pitch-and-putt course of your dreams. But the resort’s subtler allure is in the very thing that makes its success so unfathomable: its incredible remoteness. Globetrotting instructor Hank Haney, whose six years with Tiger Woods yielded a delectably readable best seller, The Big Miss,, would love to tee it up at Bandon Dunes—one of these days. “It’s a really hard place to get to,” he says a few days before I make the journey to the coastal, southern tip of Oregon, a four-and-a-half-hour drive from Portland. “You gotta be committed!” Life’s craziness has never been more difficult to escape, it seems, and traditionally it’s what we’ve turned to golf to shed. But that’s not why Mike Keiser, the owner of Bandon Dunes, dropped his pin on a spot so removed from the churn of the big city, from hyperactive smartphones, Saturday-morning soccer games, lawn chores, and email tsunamis. Keiser, a lifelong golfer, made his fortune in greeting cards. You almost certainly bought one of them if, like millions of us, you couldn’t resist the ingenious charm of celebrated illustrator and children’s book author Sandra Boynton’s birthday classic, “Hippo Birdie Two Ewes,” which she drew for Keiser in 1975, when she was 22. The riches earned at Recycled Paper Greetings—it’s estimated that the cards Boynton created for the company sold more than 200 million copies alone—allowed Keiser to indulge his passion for golf architecture and, particularly, for links golf. That wild, wooly, windblown, and often wet form of the game dates back six centuries and is played in the British Isles on legendary seaside tracks like Scotland’s St. Andrews and—Keiser’s greatest inspiration—Royal Dornoch, an exquisitely weather-

From Portland, cut to the coast and ride the Pacific Coast Scenic Byway (U.S. Highway 101), skirting craggy cliffs and the churning Pacific. Here are four worthwhile stops along the way. 1 Yaquina Head Lighthouse This stoic, white beacon a few miles north of Newport has guided mariners since 1873. Nearby tide pools should not be missed, with their hordes of starfish and spiny purple sea urchins. 2 Devils Churn All of Oregon’s coast is grand evidence of the relentless power of the ocean, but nowhere is the display more impressive than at this wave-carved inlet near Cape Perpetua that explodes with every incoming swell. 3 The Hobbit Trail Six miles north of Florence, enter the unmarked parking lot just south of Carl G. Washburne Memorial State Park. Here you’ll find the trailhead for this mystical half-mile walk. An arching tree canopy, or hobbit tunnel, leads to a pristine beach. 4 Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area North America’s longest stretch of coastal sand dunes extends south from Florence, ending just north of Bandon. Hop on a dune buggy or ATV for a thrilling ride through the sand. Enjoy it—soon you’ll be pitching out of the bunker.

battered 18 holes tucked into a distant nook of the ferocious North Sea’s coast. Keiser wondered what would happen if that brand of golf—available in the States on only a precious few courses and, for the most part, only to members of such untouchably tony private clubs as Eastern Long Island’s Shinnecock Hills—were made possible for the guy with a deep love of the game but not the Hamptons ZIP code. A “speculative folly” is what Keiser calls it now, 15 years after he built Bandon’s first course on the only patch of land he could find and afford that met the essential standards of true links golf: situated near the sea; minimally carved from natural, gnarly terrain; set on fast, firm, sandy soil. “It’s the reason this place is so remote,” he says over a 7 a.m. breakfast in late May in the main lodge at Bandon Dunes. “On the East Coast, there’s nothing. You can find sand places in Long Island, but you can’t buy the land. You can find them in North Carolina, but they’re state parks and hurricane-prone. I was beginning to despair on the West Coast, too, until we found this.” ILLUSTRATION BY KATRINN PELLETIER

“This” is the 50-mile stretch of sand dunes due north of tiny Bandon, Oregon. It’s what Keiser calls “America’s true linksland.” Sitting next to the lithe, salt-and-pepperhaired, 69-year-old entrepreneur, you wouldn’t possibly glean that he has, in the brief period of time since opening that first course in May 1999, created a golf destination that many close watchers of the game think outranks century-old Pinehurst and Pebble Beach. The man whom one longtime golf writer admiringly calls “the anti-Trump” is humble, rigorously undemonstrative, and exceptionally generous in the credit he gives to almost everyone but himself. “I’m proud of the place, yes, but I’m also astonished that it worked,” Keiser says, moving steadily through a plate of strawberries and watermelon. “That first year, I thought 10,000 rounds was doable—a bit optimistic, but doable. It turned out to be 24,000.” Today, on the four full-length courses combined, that number has grown to 140,000. Ample lodging for extended stays (visitors often play all four courses) became necessary. Four on-site restaurants have blossomed. An elaborate shuttle system makes getting around the sprawling property effortless. It’s in Keiser’s nature to downplay the success of his creation, but the Golf Channel’s Matt Ginella—one of a dozen or so journalists Keiser is hosting at the resort to mark the opening of the Punchbowl, a dizzily undulating, 2.3-acre putting green—has no qualms about noting its

wonders. “When people use the term ‘an embarrassment of riches,’ that’s Bandon Dunes,” Ginella says. “Again and again, it just clubs you over the head with pure golf.” That is to say, golf both exhilaratingly raw and strikingly pristine. During a typical round at Bandon Dunes, you might get hammered with 50-mph winds and horizontal sheets of rain. Or you could be blessed with abundant sunshine and a menagerie of unexpected playing partners—deer freely roam all of the courses, and the inland Bandon Trails, with its indiscreetly chummy turkeys, bullfrogs, and woodpeckers, outdoes even Old Macdonald for wildlife. Unlike many of the courses erected in golf’s boom years that are littered with condos and luxury homes, the tracks at Bandon Dunes are untouched by real estate. Signage is minimal, and there’s not a ball cleaner in sight, nothing to detract from the isolated beauty of the place. In my handful of days here, the words “Oh my god” leave my lips at least a dozen times, not because of the need to hit a ball out over the gusty ocean in order to have it blow anywhere near a green (although you will be sending up such prayers) but because the vistas and the greatness of the rough-hewn holes are that overwhelming. “Livin’ the dream” is how Ron Blair describes it one glorious afternoon on Pacific Dunes, beaming as he approaches the 11th-hole tee box, where a few missteps might send you tumbling to the sea. pediatrician from Dallas has made the trek to Bandon five times and is planning his sixth visit. He, too, is blown away by the pure golf—particularly the image of players on foot. Although exceptions are made for medical reasons, carts aren’t allowed on the courses. Each one has to be walked—with or without a caddie. “You’re out here for one purpose: to play golf, enjoy the surroundings, and enjoy the people you’re with,” says Blair, who often brings along his 17-year-old son. “I love the fact that there are no carts, that you can carry your own bag. It just seems to me to be restoring the natural history of the game—having the time to contemplate your shots, battling the weather and terrain. It’s how the game was meant to be played.” Blair’s experience precisely echoes Keiser’s intuition about what would set Bandon Dunes apart. Not that it’s all a guessing game. Two days before my chat with Keiser, during the wind-blasted opening of the Punchbowl, he breezily mingled with resort guests. “I guarantee you that what he was doing was soliciting feedback and listening,” Ginella says. “He wants people to have fun. It sounds simple, but it’s true. It’s the memorable moments, the fun, that make people come back. Mike understands that.” Keiser was probably less at ease the following day, when a Golf Channel producer asked him to scale a peak near the circular drive that fronts the resort’s clubhouse. The producer and his cameraman wanted a hero shot of the constitutionally low-key businessman. As images go, it was canned. But with Keiser’s humming resort and the Pacific as a backdrop, it captured the glory of the game and one man’s remarkable accomplishment.

ACH WEEK, SiriusXM’s PGA Tour Radio is crowded with worried voices about the future of golf. “How ’bout a Bring Your Dog to the Course Day?” one caller seriously proposed as a means of lifting sagging attendance at many of the country’s 15,500 golf courses, a count that shrinks by more than 100 each year. Hank Haney, who moonlights as a fantastically candid morning-show host on Hank Haney Golf Radio, attributes the slippage in golf to all kinds of factors. “The economy and the price of the game are the most obvious,” he says. “A lot of people now consider it unaffordable.” Add to that the overall diminishment of adult leisure time, and the message is simple: Even if our discretionary income wasn’t under siege, who has the time to play golf anymore? “Clearly, if the game had been invented today it would be much, much different,” Haney says. “First off, it wouldn’t be 18 holes; it would be 12. You’d use a third less water, a third less land, a third less time, and operators would have a third less maintenance costs. ” Haney thinks it’s time to crank up music on golf courses and to ditch stuffy rules that inhibit casual attire and

cellphone use—anything that might help make the sport more appealing to younger people, whose passion for it isn’t on par with baby boomers. Mark King, former CEO of the club-manufacturing giant TaylorMade, is advocating for a different kind of stretching of golf’s boundaries: His research shows that a change in the size of the cup, from the standard 4.25 inches to a more forgiving 15, would reduce the typical four-hour round of golf by more than an hour. Some adventurous course operators have opened their fairways to disc golf, a game played with Frisbees. An even more concerted push is being made for foot golf, in which a soccer ball and your best leg replace your Pro V1 and driver. Course owners, especially in California, are jumping onboard with the encouragement of the surpris-

ingly well-organized American FootGolf League. It’s not lost on golf-industry leaders that soccer is a massively popular and growing sport—particularly among Latinos, who, it’s estimated, will make up 30 percent of the U.S. population by 2050. Ted Bishop, the president of the PGA of America, appears in a YouTube video raving about the pleasures and potential of the soccer/golf hybrid. But Bishop’s most urgent challenge is the need to address core concerns about time and money. His intention is to tinker with the method of payment for golf: Rather than plunking down $50 for an 18-hole round you no longer have time to finish, what if you played only seven or 12 holes and paid by the minute? This summer, the PGA of America is testing the concept at five courses in the Midwest.

“Going forward, I think there might be four or five or six different variations on the game,” says Steve Mona, CEO of the World Golf Foundation, a Florida-based nonprofit whose initiatives for ensuring golf’s future include the First Tee program for kids. “Hopefully, they’ll help move the needle with our two most underrepresented groups: women, who are 50 percent of the U.S. population but only 20 percent of the golf population, and minorities, which we define as African-American, Latino, and Asian. They’re 37 percent of the U.S. population, and growing, but just 21 percent of the golfing population.” Can the game be made more accessible and inclusive? “Income is the most direct indicator of participation in golf,” Mona says. “If we can create greater economic diversity in our country, you’ll see greater diversity in golf.” AUGUST 2014 SPIRIT

N THE FIRST HOLE of Bandon Preserve, Josh Lesnik draws his tee shot high into the air and watches it land, with butterfly wings, on the green. As the president of KemperSports, the Chicago-based management company that operates Bandon Dunes and a hundred other golf courses in North America, you’d expect him to have a sweet swing. And he does. Tucked into the V-shaped acreage that separates the original Bandon Dunes course and its inland resort-mate, Bandon Trails, the Preserve delivers stunning ocean views from almost every one of its diabolically designed but deeply pleasurable 13 holes. It also provides a perfect vantage point from which to watch the flow of golfers

moving in every direction across the beautiful landscape. It’s a sight that, no doubt, pleases Lesnik. When he was 29, he was the resort’s first general manager, and in recent years he, too, has seen changes in the game—ones that excite him. “If you think about it, there’s never been a better time to be a golfer,” he says. “Because the industry is reacting to an oversupply of courses, rates are dropping. Instruction has never been more affordable; the equipment has never been better.” “I’m not blind to the fact that the game takes a lot of time and can be an expensive pursuit,” he continues. “But if you look at the number of USGA members, it has gone up over the past five years. Look at the junior golf associations in the States—their registrations have never been higher.”

ON THE EDGE

P7_bandon.AWM.indd 74

7/3/14 12:02 PM

Looking around the course, it’s hard to argue with Lesnik’s assessment. The place is alive with the thrill of the game. Hank Hickox, the resort’s general manager, proposes a theory about why a venue like Bandon Dunes has been largely immune to an economy that has the industry on its heels. “People will take a vacation in a recession,” Hickox says, “even as they’re resisting spending elsewhere or making long-term investments like cars and homes.” The truth is that Bandon Dunes, on Keiser’s insistence, is a golf dream affordably attained. Greens fees top out at $295 and drop to $100 in southern Oregon’s surprisingly warm winter months. (By contrast, the fee to play Pebble Beach is $495 year-round, and it’ll cost you $410 to tackle

Pinehurst No. 2 in peak season.) The resort does not charge for Wi-Fi. It ponies up for the bank fees collected at the clubhouse ATM. And all proceeds from the par-3 Bandon Preserve—more than half a million bucks last year—go to charity. Keiser’s innate largesse extends to the residents of Bandon, too, many of whom are among the 800 people the resort employs in the peak season of May through October. If Keiser can get through the red tape, he’ll soon break ground on Bandon Muni, a 27-hole course that is expressly intended to serve—and thank—the community. The cost to play? Twenty bucks. And if you think he’s going to skimp, you’re not grasping the essence of the man. Gil Hanse, the renowned architect hired to build the course in Rio for the 2016 Olympics, is set to design it. Mike Keiser can’t say what the future holds for the game of golf or Bandon Dunes. But he knows what would be lost if they aren’t standing a hundred years from now. Maybe there’s something presciently purposeful about how relentless a journey it is to get here. To experience the solitude and joy of golf in an ever-frenetic world, we might need or want to travel farther for it. Or maybe Bandon Dunes just belongs in that group of other iconic, faraway tests of our fortitude and dreams. Sandra Boynton, the “Hippo Birdie Two Ewes” illustrator, admits she’s not much of a golfer, but a few years ago she made a hole-in-one at Bandon Dunes. “How’s that for synchronicity?” she says, gently nodding to her contribution to the place. Her witness was Grant Rogers, the resort’s Yoda-like head of instruction, who eerily said, “That’s in,” the moment she struck the ball. “Grant’s a quirky, funny, sort of, oh, subversive guru,” Boynton says, laughing. That sounds about right for a guy who claims his clubs speak to him and who’s been known to play big chunks of a round with just his putter. I first met Rogers while he was whale watching, with his bag strapped to his back, from an elevated tee overlooking the Pacific. The next morning, over oatmeal and tea, he talked about the pursuits—and those hard-to-getto places—that are the ultimate test of our being. “Golf is a good way to find out about people, but it’s a great way to find out about yourself,” he said that day. “If you’re a serious skier, at some point in your life you need to go to Chamonix, in France. If you’re a surfer, you have to go to Mavericks, in California. If you’re a mountain climber, pretty much you need to go to the Himalayas. But if it’s about golf, if it’s about testing your skill, you have to come to Bandon Dunes. There’s something magical about this place. It’s where you go to find out about yourself—to find out who you are.” John McAlley’s work has appeared in Rolling Stone Stone, GQ, and Entertainment Weekly Weekly. THERE WAS A fleeting moment in May when I imagined that my 16-month-old son, Atlas, and I resembled the Norman Rockwell painting that used to hang in my grandparents’ home. In the famous dinner-table scene, a gray-haired matriarch delivers a golden-brown Thanksgiving turkey to a gracious, smiling family. I’m no Julia Child, but that evening I chopped and baked a healthy medley of chicken, quinoa, and avocado. Atlas waited patiently in his booster seat and signed “hungry” by touching his fingertips to his mouth. After months of screaming to be fed, this was a milestone. On top of that, our house was reasonably clean, and the boy had already been bathed. I felt relieved, believing I had finally mastered this whole parenting thing. Seconds later, he reached out to grab the dishes as I carried them to the table, overturning a mountain of quinoa onto the freshly mopped hardwood floor. Our dog greedily gobbled up the chicken strewn across the dining room, unaware of the avocado chunks splotched across her white fur. Atlas tearfully surveyed the mess, then shifted his hazel eyes back to me and signed “hungry.” We had applesauce for dinner that night. Then Atlas took another bath. Hours later, while scrubbing the floor, it occurred to me that in his portrait of familial bliss, Norman Rockwell lied.

Fair Warning

WHEN MY HUSBAND, David, and I announced we were expecting, every “congratulations” came with a polite warning. Other parents cautioned that we would never get a good night’s sleep or quality alone time again. Childless couples

lamented that we would be too busy to hang out with friends. Our own parents lectured us on the monumental costs of day care, college, and everything in between. In sum, our impending bundle of joy would leave us exhausted, friendless, romantically starved, and broke. Soon I learned this list was only the beginning. Before Atlas arrived, my career as a scientist included weekly travel to lecture at universities and museums. After the birth, I felt triumphant when I escaped the house during the hour-long window between feedings and naps. I lost track of world news, and I feared losing myself to the all-consuming particulars of child rearing. Meanwhile, the sleepless nights and disruption in lifestyle made me wonder: With all the known

drawbacks, why do the overwhelming majority of us have children? For our ancestors, having a brood was necessary for farming, warring, and hunting. But this is the 21st century. Do we feel obligated? Are we acting on a primal instinct? Do we fear regret if we fail to act before that fabled biological clock strikes midnight? If kids wreak havoc on our bodies, our social lives, and our hardwood floors, what do we get out of the deal? As it turns out, plenty.

Your Hug Is My Drug

MANY TODDLERS LATCH onto a favorite object— think blankies and teddy bears. Atlas went a different route. He attached to my hair. He falls asleep only while twirling it between his pudgy

fingers. It’s taken a toll. My current hairstyle is a cross between Farrah Fawcett’s feathered look and the black tuft of fuzz that sits atop the yellow Angry Bird. But every night when my son reaches out for me, I don’t have the heart to turn him away. Children aren’t the only ones who attach. New parents experience a surge of the bonding hormone oxytocin. This chemical is one of the reasons why, after nine months of discomfort and hours of painful labor, women feel jubilant when a red-faced, wailing baby lands in our arms. By dousing our brains in feel-good chemicals, nature tricks us into serving our new, tiny overlord. As it turns out, oxytocin’s impact lasts long after delivery, and it affects both moms and dads. AUGUST 2014 SPIRIT

f1_babes_ebk.indd 79

7/9/14 3:09 PM

According to research conducted by Yale University, parents experience rising levels of it during the first six months of a child’s life. It pulses through our bodies when we hug, kiss, and snuggle with our newborn, and it peaks for mothers when they nurse. We may be exhausted, but we stay “high” on the chemical, which buffers physical challenges like sleep deprivation. Yet oxytocin is just one among many hormones that foster adoration for a new arrival. Last year, neuroscientists at the University of Montreal discovered that a baby’s scent triggers the brain’s dopamine response—the same thing that happens when a ravenous person eats food or an addict gets a fix. The chemical composition of this new baby smell still eludes scientists, and it only seems to cast its spell during the first six weeks of life. Yet dopamine continues to be activated even after the scent fades. According to pediatrician Lane Strathearn at Baylor College of Medicine, a comparable response is triggered when a mom simply sees her child smile. In other words, when our kids are happy, we can physically feel it.

Buckets of Disease, or Bastions of Health?

ATLAS IS GOING through a phase in which he puts his tongue to most any noun—person, place, or thing. He tastes the wheels of his stroller. The dog. My shoes. Recently I glanced down to discover that he’d wrapped his lips around a doorknob—and no, it wasn’t our doorknob. Child development experts praise this kind of thing as “sensory exploration,” but I see it as one of the infinite ways kids plot to make the rest of us sick. I’m not alone. My friend Lauren was dining recently with her extended family when her nephew casually mentioned that Everett, her 2-year-old son, had gum in his mouth. When she asked Everett where he had gotten it, he thrust his

f1_babes_ebk.indd 80

hands under the table and eagerly chirped, “Right here, Mommy! They have lots!” Comic Louis C.K. said it best: “Kids are like buckets of disease that live in your house.” Yet a 2012 Carnegie Mellon study revealed that when exposed to a cold virus, parents are less likely to develop symptoms of illness than nonparents. Even further, a study from the University of North Carolina concluded that acts of altruism and kindness—generally how we behave toward our family—are correlated with a lowered risk of heart disease and other major illnesses. And one Harvard study suggests that men who share strong bonds with loved ones are 82 percent less likely to die from heart disease than those who are socially isolated. In other words, the close relationships we develop with those we love appear to be as important to wellness as maintaining a healthy body mass index and avoiding tobacco.

Can’t Buy Me Love

WHAT ABOUT THE financial toll of children? My husband and I anticipated that a child would impact our bank account, but we didn’t realize just how quickly it would add up. Diapers typically set parents back about $1,000 in the first year alone. The average annual cost of day care approaches $12,000. Government estimates suggest we spend an average of $250,000 per child between birth and age 17—a figure that doesn’t factor in college expenses. Good thing money doesn’t buy happiness. (At least once we enter the middle class: Harvard psychologist Dan Gilbert’s research shows that people who bring in $5 million annually are not much happier than those who earn $50,000.) Instead, happiness lies in long-term, meaningful connections. And the Pew Research Center reports that parents describe their ties with children as the most fulfilling of their lives.

FOR HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF YEARS, nature HAS BEEN GUIDING THE CHANGES IN OUR BODIES TO MAKE US THE BEST PARENTS POSSIBLE. A massive, four-year study by the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research surveyed 130,000 adults internationally and found that parents are happier than nonparents. Of course, these results come with qualifications. Parenting doesn’t necessarily make people happier, but it’s clear that parenthood is associated with happiness and meaning. Time and again research has demonstrated that parents experience greater depths of joy than nonparents. And sure, the lows are lower too, but like an elite athlete who trains for years to achieve success, the pain and struggle only make the victory that much sweeter.

The Diaper Chronicles

ON MY FIRST date with David, I never could have imagined how much time we would one day spend talking about poop. Whereas we used to wax philosophical about political theory and art, now much of our conversation revolves around Atlas’ diaper. Sometimes, it extends to the poop of other tiny beings too. My friend Vanessa and her husband recently discovered a bright blue bowel movement in the diaper of their 1-year old son, Jonah. Like all proud parents, they shared the news on Facebook, dispatching photo evidence and asking for theories on what accounted for the discoloration.

Suggestions came pouring in: Did he uncork a bottle of food coloring? Eat a Smurf? We settled on ingestion of blue Play-Doh as the most plausible cause, but the case remains open. The bizarre thing is that neither David nor I find these discussions disturbing. Poop has become just another part of the day, a routine sandwiched somewhere between shopping for groceries and filling up at the gas station. It may not sound romantic, but it’s probably not so bad for our relationship. Long-term data on marriage suggests that parenthood keeps us connected to our spouses. Couples with kids are more likely to stay married, and married people are, on average, happier than their unmarried peers. Sure, some couples stay together for their kids rather than for personal happiness. But here’s what I know for certain: Although David and I talk more often about poop than I ever anticipated, we’re still

Home Care Assistance - Changing the way the world ages!

IT’S CLEAR THAT parenthood forces us to shift priorities, but less obvious is the fact that our brains are literally being reshaped. Becoming a mother or father facilitates a kind of neural reprogramming that helps us better transition from a world primarily consisting of self to one consisting of both self and other. “The brain stores the information to help us lead our lives in a pattern set by the combination of our genes, our development, and our experiences,” explains neuroscientist Gregory Cogan at New York University. “New situations and experiences rewire brain circuitry in ways that make us best able to adjust.” After I became a mom, I began to recognize changes in myself that I didn’t expect. I used to rush through the day from one appointment to another; now I frequently pause to enjoy little things like sipping a cup of tea or watching my son at play. Having a child has made me more present, more alive to each moment. There’s an evolutionary reason for this. For hundreds of thousands of years, nature has been gently guiding the changes that take place in our bodies in order to make us the best parents possible. “Thriving, surviving offspring is the key currency of evolution,” explains Duke anthropologist Jenny Tung. “It stands to reason that ‘better’ parenting evolves over time.” Those best able to meet the needs of their children have the greatest chance of passing on their genes, which encourages our most nurturing qualities to persist in future generations. New research published this year by Michigan State University

bolsters this theory. Psychologists analyzed the origins of parenting behavior using data from 20,000 families across the world. They concluded that DNA influences how we express warmth, control, and negativity toward kids. But the most interesting find was that parents and children share a twoway exchange: We actively shape who our kids become, and they in turn affect us. In essence, we grow together. Living with children is messy and loud, complicated and stressful. It can be exhausting and make us feel like we’re unraveling. We get overscheduled with music lessons and sports practices and spend countless hours picking up discarded food and toys. Yet these are the things we forget over time. We remember and value the closeness and love—your squealing kid running toward you with open arms, the calm of reading him a bedtime story. Would we all be better off as parents? Of course not. But for many of us, kids have the capacity to bring out the best. When I reflect honestly on my relationship with my son, I realize that our typical day-to-day existence looks nothing like that scene from Norman Rockwell. That would be boring anyway. Like a pendulum, we swing between highs and lows. Tender moments turn chaotic and back again. We clean up accidents and celebrate milestones. We wade through tantrums and steer toward belly laughs. Life with Atlas looks a lot more like a Jackson Pollock: messy, unpredictable, and hard to explain. But in the big picture, priceless. Gulf World Marine Park in Panama City Beach is the only facility in North America to house rough-toothed dolphins, which are darker in color and more slender than their wellknown bottlenose cousins. Come eye to eye with one of the seven that live here—they were rescued after suffering injuries in the wild—during a dolphin meet and greet. The park is also home to alligators, sea lions, and other aquatic animals. And then there’s the on-site Gulf World Marine Institute, dedicated to rehabilitating stranded sea turtles and other sea life. Since 1970, thousands of animals have been rescued and released. Visitors can’t tour the rehab area, but they can attend the public releases, which are announced on the Gulf World Marine Park’s Facebook page. Now that’s definitely worthy of a “like.” gulfworldmarinepark.com Your adventure continues…

You don’t get dubbed the “world’s luckiest fishing village” by chance. “Destin’s proximity to the Gulf’s deep waters makes for excellent conditions. It can take twice as long to reach these depths from other cities on the Gulf,” says Captain Mike Eller, a 32-year veteran of the sport and owner of FishDestin.com, a company that books everything from party boat trips to deepsea overnights. “From April through October, giant schools of bait fish migrate past here, with a ton of game fish following them.” Anglers who prefer sturdy ground scurry to Okaloosa Island Fishing Pier, 7 miles west of Destin. Veggie Fest

The ninth annual Veggie Fest is here to prove that living meat-free is at last inching closer to mainstream embrace. The two-day event, held at the Science of Spirituality Meditation Center in Naperville (a suburb of Chicago), is expected to draw around 25,000 attendees to a family-friendly celebration of edible leaves, roots, pods, seeds, buds, and flowers. The sharp rise in the country’s vegetarianism, with numbers tripling in the U.S. since the 1970s, is largely attributed to recent, reputable research reporting that such a diet is healthier, promotes weight loss and maintenance, is better for the environment, and releases our pets from any fear that they’ll one day be baked, grilled, or sautéed. Veggie Fest, the largest affair of its kind in North America, serves up food demos with restaurant owners, chefs, and authors; an international food court; live music from some of the Windy City’s best bands; professional speakers discussing lifestyle, diet, and environmental issues; children’s programs with face painting, clowns, and crafts; and more than 100 vendor booths selling all sorts of goods. The Fest for Beatles Fans

We know, we know, all you need is love. But if you’re a die-hard Fab Four fan, you’ll also want to set out on the long and winding road for The Fest, a three-day extravaganza simultaneously celebrating its 38th year and the 50th anniversary of the first stateside appearance of John, Paul, George, and Ringo (which some historians might argue is more important than the arrival centuries earlier of an errant Italian explorer). Held at the Hyatt Regency O’Hare, the toe-tapping, pulse-quickening event, which was endorsed by The Beatles themselves years ago, boasts live performances by Peter Noone of Herman’s Hermits, Micky Dolenz of The Monkees, Mike Pender of The Searchers, Mark Rivera (Billy Joel’s saxophonist, who also happens to be

African World Festival

Borrowing this year’s theme from Stevie Wonder’s 1973 chart-topping funk anthem, “Higher Ground” (Till I reach my highest ground, no one’s

gonna bring me down, oh no), the 32nd annual African World Festival gathers more than 150,000 guests in a celebration of culture, heritage, and history. Held from 11 a.m. until 11 p.m. over three days at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History—so named for the late Motor City physician who, in 1965, helped establish the institution—the fest offers poetry, drumming, dance, educational installations, and interactive history lessons, as well as more than 150 purveyors of visual arts, handmade crafts, apparel, and accessories. Tea ceremonies, a traditional Moroccan wedding, three stages of live entertainment, and film screenings also delight guests. A highlight will undoubtedly be a roof-raising set by the Grammy-winning Clark Sisters, whose 16 albums reveal tremendous soul, warmth, and stunning vocal acrobatics. thewright.org/africanworld-festival

Jazz Age Lawn Party

At the ninth annual Jazz Age Lawn Party— hosted by Michael Arenella and His Dreamland Orchestra, the world’s premier Jazz Age dance band— you’ll be “borne back ceaselessly into the past,” as F. Scott Fitzgerald penned, by a West Egg extravaganza that would delight even his lovelorn millionaire, Jay Gatsby. Your time machine to the Roaring ’20s begins with a breezy ferry ride from either Brooklyn Bridge Park or the Battery Maritime Building to historic Governors Island, with its sprawling greens, century-old trees, fresh sea air, and Art Deco–flavored architecture. St-Germain provides the affair’s signature spirits, with legendary mixologists Julie Reiner and Andy Seymour presiding over the cocktail concocting, while East Village master chef Jimmy Carbone serves up the party’s good

PDX Adult Soap Box Derby

You can thank Ohio journalist Myron Scott for first coming up with the idea, in 1934, that homemade vehicles could be corralled for a high-stakes race that he dubbed the soapbox derby. Sixty-three years later, Portland entrepreneur Paul Zenk launched

THE CENTER FOR REGENERATIVE MEDICINE A NON-SURGICAL TECHNIQUE TO FIGHT AGAINST ARTHRITIS AND SPORTS INJURIES

The Knee Diaries: SJ is a 60-year-old male with the chief complaint of knee pain who visited The Center for Regenerative Medicine over a year ago. He was diagnosed with bone-on-bone osteoarthritis of the left knee, causing much pain and discomfort; at that point he was told only a total knee replacement could help him. He is otherwise healthy. On exam he had point tenderness to the medial side of the left knee (medical lingo: inner side). An X-ray showed severe arthritis of the knee (X-ray on the left). Patient started receiving treatments at The Center for Regenerative Medicine. Today he is feeling better (X-ray on the right). This is how it works: The physician introduces Cell Therapy into damaged, arthritic cells by means of a precise injection. This process is followed by several other modalities, including Collateral Artery Flow Exercises (C.A.F.E.), in order to accelerate the process. Depending on tissue damage, severity of the condition and the size of the joint that needs to be injected, people usually need a series of 1 to 6 treatments to improve. There is usually no downtime, and people can go back to their usual activities or work immediately. The treatments can help most musculoskeletal problems such as low back pain, neck pain, knee pain, shoulder pain, whiplash, sciatica, tendinitis, sprain, strains, torn ligaments and cartilage damage. Located in Miami, Florida, The Center for Regenerative Medicine includes a team of professionals that are dedicated to improve your quality of life, paving the way to enhance the science of non-surgical orthopedic medicine. World champions, sports legends, professional and amateur athletes, dancers, and people with just plain pain and arthritis go to The Center for Regenerative Medicine for nonsurgical orthopedic care. Using the facility to improve their condition, thousands of successful cases have been treated over the past nine years.

the PDX Adult Soap Box Derby, firing the starter’s pistol on a Northwest edition of the DIY drag race, luring six contestants to the top of volcanic Mount Tabor. This year, the 18th annual event features up to 42 competitors racing three at a time while approximately 10,000 spectators picnic and gawk at the machines as they desperately hurtle along at breathtaking speeds. According to event guidelines, each vehicle must weigh no more than 500 pounds, be outfitted with brakes and a horn, run solely on gravity, and cost less than $300. (Which probably sounds like your first actual car, right?) The perilous 0.7-mile course is a thrilling combo of straightaways and curves sure to amp up the heart rates of the competing daredevils. The first race gets started at 10 a.m., and a 30-minute intermission at 1 p.m. features the Last Regiment of Syncopated Drummers, accompanied by baton twirlers, in a dynamic, percussive performance. soapboxracer.com AUSTIN, TEXAS

Austin Bat Fest

“Twinkle, twinkle, little bat, how I wonder what you’re at,” the Mad Hatter once daftly rhymed in Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. But the denizens of Austin know exactly where to find Tadarida brasiliensis, otherwise known as the Mexican free-tailed bat: beneath the Ann W. Richards Congress Avenue Bridge. From March through November, the nocturnal mammals who reside there—more than 1.5 million of them—take nightly flight to sate their hunger, devouring a collective 250 tons of moths, crickets, mosquitoes, and grasshoppers along the way. The 10th Annual Austin Bat Fest, an off beat affair that proudly realizes the city’s

unofficial mission of “keeping it weird,” finds thousands of Austinites celebrating the critters, which can, in a single night, fly 250 miles at heights of up to 10,000 feet. Come early for the costume contests, 10 bands on two stages, children’s activities, more than 75 arts and crafts vendors, and tasty vittles. The main attraction—the feeding flight—typically takes off around 7 p.m. and lasts up to an hour, weather permitting. Fun fact: According to fable-meister Aesop, bats are nocturnal because they’re delinquent on a large debt owed to a bookie who only keeps daylight hours. And that’s no guano. roadwayevents.com

Storming the September skyline over Rancho San Rafael Regional Park, the 33rd annual Great Reno Balloon Race is the world’s largest free-admission hot air ballooning event. Attracting more than 110,000 spectators each year, this three-day extravaganza merges our nation’s passion for flying with its mad obsession over wacky competitions. Each day, qualified pilots head skyward around 6:45 a.m. and steer over targets marked with Xs on the ground, which must be tagged with beanbags hurled from the baskets. The pilot

who racks up the most points over the duration of the contest is named champion and wins a prize purse of $11,000. If contests are but a bunch of hot air to you, enjoy the event’s Glow Show, which offers predawn eye candy as dozens of creatively lit balloons head skyward. Notably, this year offers the third appearance of the beloved, 86-foot Darth Vader balloon. Food, drinks, and a children’s play area are on hand, and tethered balloon rides are available for a $5 donation to a local nonprofit. renoballoon.com

Robothon

In 1942, legendary science fiction writer Isaac Asimov introduced the Three Laws of Robotics—a robot may not injure a human being, a robot must obey orders given to it by human beings, a robot must protect its own existence—and pop culture was never the same. At Robothon, a thrilling annual contest between dozens of amateur-built robots at Seattle Center Armory, you can see for yourself how far Asimov’s laws have been bent. (Hint: probably more than in Bicentennial Man but less than in Transformers: Age of Extinction.) Produced by the Seattle Robotics Society, this free event features a wide and wacky range of competitions—some of them combat-related—with a few strict guidelines for bots: no flying, no combustion engines, and no projectiles. In the Robo-Magellan event, autonomous robots must navigate a 1,000-foot obstacle course, while the Mini-Sumo contest finds two robots duking it out in a sumo ring, with points scored every time one is knocked from the circle. It’s sure to be a delightful, eccentric day for families, tech geeks, and sci-fi fans alike. robothon.org

Extending the Freedom to Fly

Southwest gears up for the end of the Wright Amendment. You might notice growing excitement among Southwest Airlines Employees—particularly those in the Dallas area—as October 13, 2014, approaches. That’s when the Wright Amendment expires, and to see its significance to the Company, it helps to know the backstory. Southwest began operations at Dallas’ Love Field in 1971, a few years after the cities of Dallas and Fort Worth and several airlines (not including Southwest) had come to an agreement to create what is now Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport. After that airport opened, other airlines filed lawsuits to make it illegal for Southwest to operate at Love Field. Determined to stay put, Southwest prevailed in federal court. In 1979, Southwest began service to New Orleans, its first destination outside Texas. The move did not sit well with DFW airport leaders, who rekindled lawsuits. After their litigation failed, DFW supporters

sought the assistance of U.S. House Majority Leader Jim Wright, and on December 12, 1979, Congress approved an amendment restricting direct service on full-size jets from Love Field to cities in Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and New Mexico. This became known as the Wright Amendment. In 2004, Southwest launched the “Set Love Free” campaign, encouraging Customers to contact their congressional representatives to voice support. The campaign worked, and Southwest held a press conference in 2006 with American Airlines, DFW International Airport, and the mayors of Dallas and Fort Worth to outline a full repeal of the Wright Amendment, which would take place over the course of eight years. Congress approved the compromise, and President George W. Bush signed it into law on October 13, 2006. Earlier this year, we unveiled our post–Wright Amendment schedule, with nonstop flights from Love Field to 15 previously prohibited cities (see service start dates at right). And the excitement won’t end there—we’re looking forward to further expanding our roster of destinations from Dallas. LUV has finally been set free. —Richard West

Hermanitas students explore the sciences at UC San Diego.

Helping ‘Little Sisters’ Achieve Their Dreams A nonprofit focused on education and leadership development mentors Latina students in San Diego.

What I LUV most about my role as president of MANA de San Diego, a local chapter of the national Latina organization MANA, is seeing the young women we mentor on their high school graduation days, as they realize the positive results of all their hard work. The Hermanitas Youth Leadership Mentor program offers yearlong mentoring relationships to Latinas in grades seven through 12. Our hope is that we will inspire our hermanitas (Spanish for little sisters) to graduate high school and pursue higher education. Additionally, we award firstyear college scholarships to qualified high school graduates who have participated in the program. Since Hermanitas began in 1987, we have served more than 700 girls in the greater San Diego area. At MANA de San Diego, 100 percent of the student participants in our Hermanitas Youth Leadership Mentor program have gone to college since 2006. We attribute much of that success to the dedicated mentors who strive to make a meaningful, lifelong difference in the lives of the Hermanitas. But the truth is the mentors can’t do it alone; students must be willing to put in the

hours and the effort to take control of their lives into their own hands. Once they do that, it’s truly amazing to see what they can accomplish. In addition to the Hermanitas Youth Leadership Mentor program, MANA de San Diego has another scholarship initiative that rewards students who have demonstrated outstanding leadership, community involvement, educational aspirations, and career goals. We also take grade point average, special circumstances, and financial need into consideration. About $30,000 in scholarships is awarded annually. Without invaluable community partners, our work to promote leadership and education among Latina students would not be possible. So I’m thankful for companies like Southwest Airlines, one of our top corporate sponsors, that allow us to continue to make the Hermanitas Youth Leadership Mentor program an annual success. —Catherine Arambula President, MANA de San Diego

The “If” List

Chris Pratt, if you were a guardian of the galaxy in real life, what would you protect most fervently? Well, I am, and the thing I protect most fervently is my family. If you could have the answer to any question, what would you ask? Is this thing on? If you could give your 10-year-old self one piece of advice, what would it be? Time heals all wounds. If you know one thing about romance, what is it? Flowers are nice on days that aren’t Valentine’s Day. If a picture paints a thousand words, what are you doing in that picture? Do I get a thousand words to describe the picture? If you’ve learned anything from being a father, what is it? Getting up early in the morning doesn’t have to be a bad thing.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY BRIAN BOWEN SMITH

If you had to choose between living your life as Guardians of the Galaxy’s Peter Quill or Star-Lord, which would it be and why? Well, Peter Quill is Star-Lord. Trick question! I would take them both!

This month, the Parks and Recreation veteran appears in the Marvel superhero comedy Guardians of the Galaxy Galaxy.
