J

ennie Bowen Steed’s idea of finding love changed on a flight when she saw an ad for It’s Just Lunch, a personalized matchmaking service for busy professionals. Jennie had been divorced for two years, and

her time was focused on her career & family. The ad read like a good friend who could introduce her to single, professional men she wouldn’t have the opportunity to meet on her own. Today, Bowen Steed is married to

Where were you at in your life when you decided to join IJL?

GREG:

I’d been divorced for about two years, and it was a hectic time career wise. My company was in a transitional phase, and it demanded a lot of my time and effort, so I didn’t have time for much else.

JENNIE: I’d also been divorced about two years. Being a single mom and working full-time, it wasn’t a huge priority of mine to go out and do the legwork it took to meet someone; it felt like having another job, and I didn’t have time for that.

Favorite first date memories?

GREG: I was attracted to her right away. On the second date there was a real chemistry. Then it evolved very, very quickly. JENNIE:

When Greg and I started talking, I discovered we had similar careers. I remember the conversation was so easy and comfortable. When I shared my date feedback with my IJL matchmaker, I let her know that Greg and I had made arrangements to attend a big award dinner at his country club. The minute I walked in, I knew he was a consummate gentleman. I felt so cared for. He was attentive and made sure I was introduced to everyone.

How did IJL compare to your online dating experience?

GREG: Online dating isn’t easy, it’s work. I’ve got a full-time career; I didn’t need another job. With IJL they did everything for me. You’re busy with your career and everything else going on – IJL was just easier. The caliber of matches was much higher. JENNIE: I saw an ad for IJL on a flight and was contemplating whether I was interested when someone close to me mentioned it as an option. I thought

I’d try it because it sounded like having friends who could interview people for you so when you went on a date you would know there’s something about the two of you that someone thought would be a good fit.

What would you tell a friend who was interested in IJL but was tentative about making the investment?

What's the most challenging part of working remotely from a dating perspective?

6 in 10 people say not meeting people as often

GREG:

At the end of the day what is your end goal? Then I’d ask, what’s the cost of being happy worth to you? The kinds of people who choose IJL aren’t fooling around. It’s not someone on the Internet just looking to meet a ton of people and date up a storm. It was definitely worth it for me.

Best part about dating thru IJL?

GREG: Besides choosing all my matches I would say the scheduling of my dates. They call you and ask what your schedule is like, so you don’t have to worry about it. If I said I was available Wednesday or Thursday this week and Sunday next week they would find a way to fit dating into my schedule. What sort of activities did you enjoy while you were dating?

JENNIE: We love to be outside. I also love going to places I’ve never been before. He loves to drive and take me places – whether that’s going to the beach or going to the mountains or some random lake that’s hidden away. How has your life changed since you met?

GREG: It is totally different than it was. I would say that there was a point in time when I felt a little bit lost. Everything has completely turned around. Every day I wake up, and I enjoy the day. I enjoy being around her, the kids, and our home. Life is just better. It’s Just Lunch has been matching busy singles since 1991. FINALLY! AN UNTUCKED SHIRT AT THE PERFECT LENGTH.

untuckit.com untuckit.indd 1

We started UNTUCKit because we had trouble finding shirts that looked good untucked. Most were too long and looked sloppy when not tucked in. It shouldn’t have been that difficult, but it was. So we decided to launch a shirting company marketed exclusively for those who want to wear their shirts untucked. We would make a better shirt. One fit for comfort and not convention; designed to fall at the perfect length. An untucked shirt. And that’s what we’ve done. So go ahead…UNTUCKit!

GARY’S GREETING

I’m a sports enthusiast. I enjoyed playing several sports in my younger days and still play golf when I can find the time. I have a passion for watching teams (especially my beloved University of Texas Longhorns!) compete at a high level, and I’m a true believer that competition also makes us better in business and life. That’s certainly true when it comes to working in the airline industry, the ultimate team sport. I’ve been in the industry for three decades, and its current state is the strongest and healthiest I’ve seen it. At Southwest Airlines, we embrace

competition, but you, the traveling public, are the real winner. As a low-fare airline, Southwest revolutionized the industry in 1971. Back then, flying was for the rich and elite. Today, more than 85 percent of Americans have flown commercially. We have never lost our laser-like focus on offering low fares; it’s our Brand, our niche, and our commitment to our Customers. All airlines compete on fares, which is why you’ll often see other carriers matching ours. What you don’t always see coming are hidden fees for things

like checking your bag, changing your reservation, and so on. Our Customers have often complained to me that the nickel-and-diming approach of the “other guys” is downright offensive. On Southwest, however, what you see is what you get. In the same way that low fares set us apart in 1971, today we are the only domestic airline that can truthfully claim that these fees don’t fly with us. We believe it’s the right thing to do for our Customers, and it’s true to our low-fare philosophy. For us, low fares are important, but they are not the only competitive factor. We compete with our schedule, our products, and our reliability. In fact, we compete in every aspect of the Customer Experience—from booking a reservation to delivering you safely, ontime, with your luggage, and with a smile. We continue to invest in new technology, modernize our fleet, and introduce new products and services—like music, free live TV, and other onboard entertainment options. One thing that no other airline can match is the sincerity, warmth, and dedication of our People—their hearts for serving others and Fun-LUVing Attitudes. They have been our single greatest competitive advantage from day one, and today their passion for taking care of our Customers is stronger than ever. On behalf of the 47,000 People of Southwest, thank you for allowing us to serve you!

Nuestros Clientes a

WANT TO SHARE YOUR STORY? Have you witnessed an over-the-top act of Southwest Airlines Employee kindness? Let us know at Southwest.com/ contact-us.

YOU MADE OUR DAY

Dear Southwest,

Flight attendant Lisa Castignetti totally made my day! When she came around for the drink order, I told her that I liked her panda-shaped earrings. I love pandas. She said that she likes the animals too. Before we landed, she came over with a cup and handed it to me. I thought it was water, but inside were the earrings. I was totally shocked and so excited for this thoughtful, over-the-moon-nice gift. I’ve ridden Southwest many times with mostly good experiences, but Lisa really made my day. —Samantha Scholtz FEAR CONQUEROR

My wife and I traveled with our two sons, Luke and Jack. Although Jack, our 9-year-old, had flown before, he was very nervous. Capt. Tom Dollahite came out to the waiting area between flights and stopped to say hello to our sons. When I explained to Tom that Jack has been afraid to fly, he asked if he could take Jack on board to show him the cockpit. Of course we were 18 SOUTHWEST AUGUST 2015

F1_luvmail_KT.indd 18

elated at the idea, and away they went. Jack returned after a few minutes with a huge smile. I asked him if he was still afraid to fly, and he said, “No, now I’m excited.” Once we were seated on the plane, Tom called for my son on the intercom: “Capt. Jack to the cockpit.” Tom introduced him to the passengers and let him do the announcements. Right before we pushed back, the captain came back and asked Jack how he was doing—another great moment. Once we landed and were deboarding the captain asked Jack how his flight had been. His response was “Great!” From the bottom of my heart I thank our captain for doing that for our son. We have never been treated with such kindness on any other airline. —Todd Howard MEDICAL MIR ACLE

I was scheduled for a meeting in North Carolina. My plan was to fly to Raleigh, go to the meeting and lunch, and return home the same day. On the way home, just before boarding a connection in Baltimore, I collapsed in cardiac arrest. The first person to get to me was Southwest employee Jonathan Richards. He began CPR but saw there was no response after a few seconds. Someone brought him a defibrillator. Even though I seemed to respond, the machine indicated a second attempt was needed. So Jonathan did it again. I came back from “the other side” and went into a deep sleep. Paramedics arrived a few minutes later. While this ILLUSTRATION BY DANIEL DOWNEY

was going on, Southwest was in touch with my wife, Cheryl, who was able to catch an early morning flight and was at my bedside the next day. I received most of the information regarding this episode from other people; Jonathan was my main source. After I was discharged, I called him and his wife, Kristy. Last October, I celebrated six months of being back among the living by inviting them to spend a weekend with Cheryl and me. Next time you visit Baltimore on Southwest, ask for Jonathan Richards. I wanted to let you know that Elmo Wedderburn, one of your employees at San Francisco International Airport, made quite a positive impact on me. Long story short, I recently left active duty with the military, and I’ve been on the job hunt for a while now. I had an interview in San Francisco and another in Dallas the next day. It’s expensive and exhausting looking for a job, especially this long into the search. My San Francisco interview ran long, and I was in a huge rush to make it to the airport. When I arrived, I realized I was supposed to fly from Oakland! Elmo, a customer service agent, stepped up in a big way. He found a flight that connected to my original itinerary in Los Angeles and stayed calm through the whole ordeal. I can’t believe what he was able to do and how much time, money, and stress he saved me. Please pass along my sincere gratitude and let Elmo know that he’s made at least one person’s life better. —Pete Shearer NO LONGER AT A LOSS

My husband and I were leaving Oklahoma City after visiting our daughter and her family for a grandchild’s fourth birthday. We’d gone through security and were waiting for our flight to Chicago and on to Indiana and home. My husband received a call from a pharmacist in Indiana. Someone had found the small bag that he keeps his medication in. We were unaware that the bag was missing. A Southwest flight

attendant had found the bag. It had fallen out of my husband’s suitcase onto the pavement outside Will Rogers World Airport. In that bag was a newly filled 3-month supply of blood pressure medicine. Lois Jockers, the Dallas-based flight attendant who found the bag, was wonderful. She not only went the extra mile to return the bag but also included a very nice note saying she hoped to see us in the air on a future flight. I’m a hospital-based RN, and I recognize when someone goes above and beyond to help others. My husband had been travelling extensively for our family business, and our short trip to OKC was his only time off in weeks. Not having to worry about the hassle of trying to replace lost medication helped during this busy time for us. Please thank Lois for her professionalism and for being the kind of person we all should be. —Kathy Liss GOLDEN RETRIEVER

May Lin Tan Barnett is awesome! I left my one-of-a-kind feather headband on the plane and was sick about it. I went to the baggage claim area, and she volunteered to go all the way back up to the plane and get my fascinator. Thank you, May Lin! —Jenny Calleri GREAT EXPECTATIONS

I would like to inform Southwest that a member of their staff, Michael Kean, has ruined all future air travel for my family and me. Until yesterday, we were accustomed to curt, rude, and largely disinterested staff when interacting with personnel from the airline industry. That was until Michael, a customer service agent, ruined everything. He seemed sincerely interested in our travel and how our vacation was. He then took the time to interact with my children, making them laugh and reducing the stress for the whole family. He did not stop there, giving us stepby-step directions on how to locate our gate. Although Michael should be ashamed for raising my expectations, Southwest should recognize him and consider him an example of great customer service. He is an asset to your airline. —Dan O’Brien

OUR STAR Customer Service Agent, Oakland, California

Gail Smith IT’S A SNAP

Gail takes photos both on and off the clock.

If you see Gail Smith at the Oakland International Airport, she’ll undoubtedly greet you with a cheerful smile and helpful attitude. Gail has been a Customer Service Agent at Southwest Airlines for eight years. Even though her interactions with Customers at the ticket counter, baggage desk, and gate podium last only a few minutes, it’s her goal to make each encounter a positive one. “I love to engage with my Customers while I complete my tasks,” Gail says. “I want to find out where they are going and the reason they are going there. Then I try to find a way to enhance it.” For example, if Customers tell Gail they’re on vacation, she’ll offer to take their picture. “I’ll use their phone to take a photo—this is what I’m known for! Then they can send the photo to those who are waiting for them to arrive or keep it as a souvenir of their trip.” Gail likes taking photos outside of work too, and in her free time she learns new techniques and grows her collection of equipment. Her vacations are usually “photography safaris,” tours where photographers travel together to exciting destinations, receiving instruction along the way. A few of her favorite international destinations for such trips are Samoa, Fiji, and Italy. Gail was born in Detroit but moved to Riverside, California, with her family when she was 13. After graduating college, she started working for AT&T in the Bay Area, which has been her home ever since. Gail retired from her career in telecommunications before coming to Southwest Airlines. She’s a loving, devoted mother and grandmother. Today, Gail couldn’t be happier with her job. “We work hard—very hard—but our rewards are plentiful,” she says. “I just love meeting people each day and hearing tidbits about their lives.” Thank you for being one of the brightest stars at Southwest, Gail. Your enthusiasm for Customer Service inspires us all! —Katie Ellwood To thank Gail for her work and dedication, Jersey Boys is proud to give her two tickets to see the show in Las Vegas. RAPID REWARDS FREEDOM STORY Songwriter, Nashville, Tennessee

Liz Rose

Hearing your favorite song come on the radio is a surefire way to start a great day—especially if it’s one you wrote. For Grammy Award–winning songwriter Liz Rose, this phenomenon happens nearly every day. As a cowriter on country hits such as “Girl Crush” by Little Big Town, “Crazy Girl” by the Eli Young Band, and “White Horse” by Taylor Swift, Liz has a number of chart-topping tunes under her belt. In addition to songwriting, Liz owns a lifestyle and home decor store named Castilleja, located in Nashville. She splits her time between there and Dallas. “I fly about once every two weeks, and I always make sure it’s on Southwest Airlines,” she says. “Everyone is so friendly.” Liz depends on the flexibility Southwest provides, which allows her to switch up her plans without additional fees. “I love the fact that I can change my plans on the day of my trip and still keep my travel funds for the future,” she says. Even in the trickiest of situations, Liz knows Southwest has her back with top-notch Customer Service. Five years ago, while on her way to Las Vegas for the American Country Music Awards and her own wedding, Liz ran into a bit of a snag: “Our flight was delayed due to weather, and we weren’t sure if we were going to make it on time.” Once the flight took off, the Crew’s Fun-LUVing Attitude was a welcome relief: “Everyone was so accommodating! The Flight Attendants even gave us Champagne to celebrate.” Thank you for your loyalty and for sharing your talent with the world, Liz. We are big fans of your music and even bigger fans of you! —Victoria Powers

from the editor

Dear Reader,

One of the dumbest things a parent can say is “Kids, you’re in for a real treat!” This is grown-up speak for “I’m forcing you to experience some lame thing from the dawn of time.” Every now and then, though, we can reenact a piece of our youth, such as a drive-in movie, that isn’t so lame after all. Still, we should avoid foisting our happy days on our loved ones as accurate memories. They almost never are. While we were preparing this issue’s cover story, I thought about my own good old days in suburban Philadelphia—particularly one memorable night when I took a pretty blond girl named Beth on a first date. She was wearing Love’s Fresh Lemon perfume, and the sweet scent filled my mom’s Plymouth Valiant like … well, like love. But just as I was pining for my long-lost youth, details of the evening began creeping back. Beth’s deeply conservative parents practically frisked me when I showed up; they weren’t keen on the whole drive-in idea. It was a cold evening, I didn’t know enough to park at a heated speaker, and we both shivered throughout the movie (which, for reasons I can’t fathom, was Ryan’s Daughter Daughter, a terrible first-date flick). The car broke down on the way back. My dad had to come pick us up, and Beth got home scandalously late. Her parents forbade more dates. Gradually, the smell of Love’s Fresh Lemon faded from the Valiant’s interior; Mom said the odor was sickening. Which explains why nostalgic events tend to disappoint the second time around: They weren’t entirely perfect the first time. And so, when you bring your family to one of the drive-ins making a revival around the country, treat it as an awesome, new experience. Because that’s exactly what it is.

I enjoyed the article “Dogs v. Cats” [June 2015]. I am voting cat! I have always enjoyed both animals. However, dogs basically love everyone, whereas cats choose whom they love. For me, that is true loyalty. If you are one of the lucky ones to be picked by a cat, count yourself blessed.

I grew up with cats and have always loved them! They are quiet, get rid of vermin, and help keep you warm at night. But they are also aloof. I flew from Baltimore to Boston on Southwest, preparing myself to drive to Burlington, Vermont, for my first marathon. Nervous and anxious, I opened the magazine and read “The Mountain of Youth” [May 2015]. It couldn’t have been more perfect for that moment. Adam and Robin, who have worked with us for years, are self-described “sci-fi nerds.” “We both get into fun events at the Alamo Drafthouse,” Robin says, “like when they ran a Back to the Future marathon—we sat through all six hours of that for sure.”

Rob, who created the colorful wall-hopping illustration for “Get Over It,” is a film fanatic. “I love going to movies more than just about anything else, especially the late show at The Magnolia theater in Dallas—it’s cozy and perfect for catching the latest art-house films.”

Jim chronicled the revival of drive-in theaters across the country. He experienced his first drive-in as a kid in the 1960s. “What I remember most is how big the movies seemed on the screen and how big I felt being outside with my brothers.”

And it’s not because everyone’s a comedian. “Laughter is more about relationships than humor,” says neuroscientist Robert R. Provine, the author of Curious Behavior: Yawning, Laughing, Hiccupping, and Beyond. Beyond “You go to a party and have a room full of laughing people, but they’re not telling jokes. What’s happening is playful interactions between individuals.” In fact, Provine’s research at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, found that everyday expressions like “I’ll see you guys later” and “It was nice meeting you too” elicited more giggles than punch lines did. In other words, laughter isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.

Benedictine was created in the mid-1800s, not, as the legend alleges, by 16th-century monks.

MAKE IT ↑ Shake 1½ ounces London dry gin, ¾ ounce lemon juice, ½ ounce Benedictine liqueur, ¼ ounce rich liqueur simple syrup (2:1 ratio), and 1 teaspoon absinthe with ice. Strain into a cocktail glass and float with Angostura bitters. (If you’re fancy, use an atomizer to spray the bitters.)

The Nixon

Inspired by the sour-style cocktails popularized in the 1960s and early 1970s— which coincided with a certain politician’s vice-presidential and presidential tenures—the Nixon cocktail at Kimball House in Decatur, Georgia, boasts all the trappings of mid-century elegance. It’s simple, refreshing, and clean, with herbal notes from the gin and potent Benedictine liqueur. It’s also a lot easier to swallow than controversial politics, making it a bar crowd favorite.

WORK Solution

find a way around those obstacles no matter what. The difficulty is when we tell ourselves we’re in a doing mindset and we’re not.”

What prevents us from achieving our goals? “The simple answer is reasons. You have to have reasons in life to be a reasonable person, but they get in the way when you use them to let yourself off the hook. They become excuses. You end up putting boundaries around yourself and blaming everyone else for why they’re there. Achievement is about personal responsibility— being honest with yourself, identifying your intentions, and giving them the necessary attention.”

Get Over It

Want to achieve your goals? Don’t let excuses stand in your way. What’s the difference between trying and doing? “Each is a valuable state of mind, but oftentimes we confuse the two,” says Bernard Roth, author of The Achievement Habit: Stop Wishing, Start Doing, and Take Command of Your Life. “In a ‘trying’ mindset, you may set a goal and accomplish it with no problem; however, if you encounter obstacles, you’re likely to be easily defeated. In a ‘doing’ mindset, you ILLUSTRATION BY ROB WILSON

F1_July_Problem_KT.indd 41

Where should I start? “Be aware of how you use reasons to justify your behavior. Next, practice not using them. For example, simply telling someone you won’t be able to attend an event and leaving it at that. By abandoning reasons, or excuses, you become more mindful of your actions, thus empowering yourself to set realistic goals and achieve them.” Anything else I can do? “Watch your language. Use ‘I won’t’ instead of ‘I can’t’ because usually that’s the truth. Replace ‘but’ with ‘and.’ These small changes will help you reframe the way you look at things you perceive as blocking you.” For more tips, check out theachievement habit.com.

WORK Takeaway

John’s first book, On Fire: The 7 Choices to Ignite a Radically Inspired Life, comes out next spring. To learn more about him, visit risingabove.com.

OUTTAKES PRIORIT Y NO. 1 I’m determined to be engaged where I am, to be alive in the moment. When I’m at work I’m fully at work, and when I’m home I’m all in there. Balance is impossible, but being engaged is a choice. MISSION STATEMENT One of my favorite quotes comes from German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche: “He who has a why can endure any how.”

John O’Leary

This inspirational speaker knows the life-changing power of perspective. When I was 9 years old, I walked into my parents’ garage early on a Saturday morning and lit a piece of cardboard on fire. Afterward, I walked over to a 5-gallon can of gasoline and tried to pour it on the flames. It caused an enormous explosion that left me with burns on 100 percent of my body. The night my fingers were amputated, the surgeon came into my room. He walked me through some of the things I wouldn’t be able to do anymore 42 southwest august 2015

F2_takeaway_kt.indd 42

but with a caveat. He said, “Maybe you can’t be a court reporter, but you can be a judge. Maybe you can’t be a carpenter, but you can run a construction company. Maybe you can’t play pro baseball, but you can be a GM.” He reminded me that even though what I had lost was great, the best was still yet to come. It’s about owning your struggles, accepting what you can’t change, and pursuing what you can with all you’ve got.

POINT OF VIEW We each decide how we ask the question “Why me?”—as a victor or as a victim. You can ask, “Why did this happen to me?” or “Why am I so fortunate?”

HeyLets

Explore like a local with the help of this crowd-sourced app. Here’s how co-founder and CEO Justin Parfitt describes the travelfocused discovery tool: I had a eureka moment while trolling a review site on a vacation with my wife. After sifting through various posts, it occurred to me: I have nothing in common with most of these people— why would I take their advice? My co-founder, Dean Kelly, and I created HeyLets on the premise of connecting like-minded individuals. You identify your interests, and, based on your selections and your location, the app generates a custom feed of recommendations—everything from restaurants and bars to hiking trails and day trips—from users with similar tastes. Follow people whose posts you like best to further customize your experience. We’re currently in 100-plus countries.

HEYLETS’ STARTUP GUIDE Stay positive. Reviews and ratings on crowd-sourced platforms seem to invite negativity, which is why we offer recommendations instead. The goal is to tell users where they should go rather than what they should avoid. Aim to inspire. We wanted to create an online service that encourages offline discovery. Whether it’s a hidden hike or a prime surf spot, users have insider access to the best local experiences. Be versatile. The app can be used to plan a trip overseas or a staycation. With the filter feature, you can browse posts anywhere in the world—or sort by category to view only restaurants, for example.

START with The Wizard of Oz. Then consider Casablanca. Move through the decades: Sunset Boulevard, The Graduate, E.T., The Silence of the Lambs, and The Dark Knight. For a century, cinema has been the lens through which America has examined itself—it’s where we’ve turned to nourish our hopes and face our fears. Yet fewer of us are going to the movies with each passing year. What was once the essential pastime is now just a passing interest, naysayers grumble. But look a little closer. Dwindling attendance has inspired a renaissance, with theaters themselves leading the way. Like the best of America, they continue to dream bigger, inventing ways to remind us that there’s still nothing like a night at the movies.

ALAMO DRAFTHOUSE / AUSTIN, TEXAS I’VE NEVER SEEN JAWS. Chalk it up to the ichthyophobia—the irrational fear of fish—I’ve suffered since the age of 3, when a family friend warned me about the water right before a trip to visit relatives in Indonesia. “Watch out for sharks!” he told me with a devilish grin. I took this very, very seriously. Weeks later, my grandfather hefted me onto his shoulders and, despite my wailing, waded up to his neck into the Indian Ocean. I saw no sharks that day, but I’ve been terrified of fish ever since. Despite all that, I was intrigued when I heard about a strange aquatic-cinematic hybrid: For a few nights this summer, the Alamo Drafthouse would host a float-in screening of Jaws at the Texas Ski Ranch. The good news: The water-sports playground 40 miles south of Austin doesn’t stock any fish. (Take that, crippling ichthyophobia!) I could do this. Then I found out about the scuba divers. “There will definitely be people being grabbed during key scenes,” Henri Mazza, Alamo Drafthouse’s VP of special events, told me over the phone. I arrive early for the preshow beach bash, where people play lawn games while shark-costumed dancers boogie onstage to the Hawaii Five-0 theme. I grab an inner tube and join the eager crowd of

700 on the shoreline. Before taking the plunge, we watch a single fin cut through the water. This strikes me as more comical than ominous. It’s just a foam prop, I tell myself. Plus I’m 50 yards away, on dry land. But that’s about to change. In the 1910s, a nickel was all it took to escape reality and pop into a moviehouse. Soon came the feature-length films of the 1920s and the lavish movie palaces that hosted them. To bolster their profits, theaters offered concessions, including the now ubiquitous buttered popcorn. During the First and Second World Wars, they were ad-hoc community centers, where hawkers sold liberty bonds and newsreels connected civilians to the battlefront. In the ’50s the game changed once again, thanks to the advent of broadcast television and the urban exodus to suburbia. Mall theaters and drive-ins attempted to fill the gap, but even they soon had to contend with home entertainment: VHS, DVD, and now streaming. With attendance continuing to plummet—2014 was the worst year for ticket sales in the U.S. and Canada since 1995—innovation is an ongoing imperative. Theaters like the Drafthouse are doing more than ever to lure audiences, like showing The Godfather: Part II on a New York City rooftop and Close Encounters of the Third Kind at Devils Tower National Monument. And screening movies in the middle of a lake. The opening nighttime scene of Jaws takes on an eerie quality, the onscreen ocean looking like an extension of the lake. My eyes deceive me: This could all be happening 20 yards away! I glance at my husband, who towed me right up to the screen, and—wait. What is touching my leg? Mud. We’re so close to shore I’ve hit bottom. Eventually I quit worrying about my surroundings. That’s the hallmark of any great moviegoing experience: Concessions and comfy seats and fancy surround sound reel you in but recede into the background when the lights go down, leaving space for the story to captivate. As the film’s triumphant heroes paddle back to Amity, cheers erupt across the sea of spectators. We join the throng as it filters out to the parking lot, squeezing the last drops of water from our swimsuits before piling into the car and heading home, legs fully intact. —Gabbi Chee Cotherman

Dinner and a movie gets a serious upgrade at San Francisco’s renowned foreign cinema. Tuck into seabass ceviche, brined Hampshire pork chops, and grilled Monterey calamari with an industrial-chic courtyard for a backdrop. While you dine, foreign—come on, it’s right in the name—classic, and independent features are projected high onto the exterior walls. Consider it a feast for the eyes. Recent favorites include Magnolia and The Maltese Falcon. The California-Mediterranean menu rotates daily, but films usually last for a month.

the future is here At Secret Cinema, fan interaction is encouraged— nay, required.

THE CAMERA PANS UP, and there’s Marty McFly, 5 feet, 4 inches of feathery hair and puffy down vest. He wanders the town square of Hill Valley, bewildered by the poodle skirts, letter jackets, and slicked-back hair. A Cadillac convertible cruises by, the driver nodding in silent acknowledgement: “Yes, Marty, this is real.” But then Marty spies the London skyline drawing before him in the distance, and a kid with an iPhone appears. This is Back to the Future, yes, but it’s so much more. Launched in London in 2007, Secret Cinema is the brainchild of Fabien Riggall, who sought to bring back the magic of the movies. Gigantic sets, wide-open urban locales, and actors hired to recreate famous scenes are hallmarks of each event. Guests are instructed to dress in movie-specific attire, quite the spectacle when the film is, say, this summer’s Empire Strikes Back. Think stormtroopers firing off E-11 blaster rifles with reckless abandon. (This iteration was so popular that it pushed the film back into the United Kingdom box office’s top 10—35 years after its release.) At 2014’s Back to the Future production, Doc Brown demonstrated the power of his flux capacitor, and Marty hitched his skateboard to the back of a truck before meeting his dad, George, for the first time. After such re-creations wrap, guests— nearly 80,000 attended last year—settle in for the feature presentation. This fall, for the first time, Riggall will bring Secret Cinema stateside. A U.S. run of his Back to the Future project will play for roughly a month in Los Angeles. The location and exact dates are, of course, still a secret. JUST 20 YEARS AGO, home movies meant lugging around heavy camera parts, loading a tape into a camcorder, making sure that tape wasn’t already full—it was an ordeal. With the advent of smartphones, capturing memories is no longer a chore, but who says it can’t be an art form? The first order of business for any budding videographer is pinpointing your subject. “Find what inspires you,” Trank says. And once you do, “be open-minded. Don’t be afraid of failure; try everything.” Once you’ve determined what you’ll be filming, you can begin to focus on the how. A few practical pointers to keep in mind: First of all, make sure

3

to frame your subject properly. This can be as simple as orienting your phone horizontally, enabling you to capture the widest shot possible. So much of filmmaking is giving the viewer enough context. Try to be conscious of what’s in the foreground and the background.

4

Next, use your phone’s focus feature to make sure your subject is crisp and not blurry. Balancing shadows and light is a skill that will come more easily with practice. The goal is to preserve detail without washing out the image. Show if you can. Tell if you must. When it comes to narration, less is more. If you’re relying on it to communicate something that’s better represented visually, drop it, Trank says. Most importantly, “put thought into your choices,” he says. “Make sure you know why you’re showing us something the way you’re choosing to show it.” Oh, and Trank agrees, every director needs a beret. Fantastic Four opens in theaters August 7.

ETER TRAPP CAN still picture the last time the drive-in was full. It was 2006, the blockbuster summer of Cars and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest. They filled all 400 spaces and had to turn people away. To keep up with demand, they hired five extra employees. “Then the recession hit, or something,” he says, his voice trailing off. Rust streaks the 90-foot-long steel movie screen at the back of the lot. Trapp ambles past rows of old iron speaker posts toward the projection booth in the middle of the field, telling stories with a toothy grin behind a gray walrus mustache. The shed, a low-slung cinder-block bunker, hasn’t changed much since the mid-1960s, when Trapp was a teenager from New Jersey coming to summer camp in Vermont. “On Saturday nights they’d throw us in the back of the sawdust truck and drop us off in Fairlee at the drive-in,” he says. “Girls, sleeping bags, under the stars—I mean, how much closer to heaven could you get?” Back then, the drive-in showed 35 mm movies through the theater’s original twin carbon-arc

projectors. The projectionist had to preload the film onto two huge reels; a mechanical bell alerted him when it was time to switch from one projector to the other. Those were the same projectors in the booth nearly four decades later, in 2003, when Peter and his wife, Erika, bought the drive-in and tiny, adjacent motel. Their three boys, Tucker, PJ, and Cooper, were young at the time. “I

make out in privacy. More than anything else, they catered to America’s love affair with the car. There was another kind of drivein—the rural, cow-field variety— that was pastoral in nature, and the theater in Fairlee was one of those. Author W.D. Wetherell, a regular there, once wrote that he saw in the place a living reminder “of a time when a film coming to a small New England town was a big event, the viewing of it a truly communal experience.” But the world had changed since the 1950s. Against a relentless tide of cultural forces, including a fatal rise in land values, driveins nearly disappeared from the American landscape. to reclaim their role as important players in the business. “You have all the major chains putting in very expensive chairs and bringing in high-priced chicken fingers, but that’s precluding a large amount of families,” he says. “We think that’s wrong, because at the end of the day movies have always been a medium for the common man. And because of the price and the overhead issue, drive-ins are more accessible to more people.” While the number of drive-ins has dwindled, there is hope—USA

micro radio transmitters, a pop-up drive-in can take over a parking area or vacant lot for an evening, and the whole setup can be packed up in minutes. They’ve appeared across the country (and in Europe), in abandoned warehouses and under highway overpasses. Dever fell in love with the popup concept long before getting into the drive-in game. He was visiting a small Canadian town one Saturday night when the community decided to project Star Wars onto the side of a grain elevator. In the midst of a battle sequence, a train passed by and the chaotic scene was momentarily projected onto the rumbling grain cars. “For me, that was such an ethereal experience,” Dever says. “It really heightened the idea of what moviegoing is all about.” USA Drive-Ins is embracing the pop-up movement by partnering with outlet malls, vineyards, breweries— any mass-market operation with an accessible space—but they’re looking to go a step further. They’re currently working with communities in rural Louisiana whose economies have been decimated by big-box stores. The goal is to establish permanent moviegoing experiences that will revitalize vacant downtown spaces. Even still, a daunting obstacle remains for any drive-in hoping to flourish in this evolving moviegoing ecosystem: the industry’s transition from film to digital.

The family talked for a long time, and PJ, Tucker, and Cooper finally decided: Let’s do whatever it takes to keep the theater open. Drive-Ins plans to open 200 theaters within five years. “Even when obsolescence threatens an industry, some players may be able to thrive while continuing to focus on the older way of doing things,” says Phyllis Ezop, president of the business strategy consulting firm Ezop and Associates. “The ones who continue to thrive generally have some particular strengths that other players in the industry lack.” Accessibility is one strength, but so are flexibility and customization, says Ryan Smith, co-owner of Stars and Stripes, which now operates two drive-ins in Texas. “You can have as private of an experience as you want—sitting inside your car, either with your newborn child or with a date—or set up a tailgate by backing up your SUV to the screen and having the row that you’re on be like a block party for the evening.” The need for flexibility has given rise to the “guerilla,” or pop-up, drive-in movement. Using inexpensive LCD projectors, along with

ONE OF THE FIRST things the Trapps did after buying the Fairlee drive-in was upgrade the projector. They paid $40,000 for a refurbished, 20-year-old Simplex unit with a xenon-bulb lamp house, set up a platter system to unspool and respool the 35 mm films, and shoved the old carbon-arc projectors into a corner of the booth.

But Trapp’s booking agent in Massachusetts began warning the family that getting decent films would become harder as the industry phased out 35 mm film production. In January 2014, Paramount Pictures became the first big studio to stop distributing major movies on 35 mm. The move came sooner than industry insiders had anticipated, and it instantly accelerated the time frame for other studios to follow suit. Some columnists predicted that all distribution would become digital within a year. It was only a matter of time before movies wouldn’t be available in Fairlee at all—unless Trapp could come up with a digital projection system to the tune of more than $80,000. “With the business over the past few years being half of what it used to be and with it being seasonal and so dependent on the weather,” Trapp says, “there’s no way we could get a bank loan for that kind of money.” Peter, Erika, and the boys did what many farm families do when faced with a serious challenge: They gathered around the dining-room table one night and talked over their options. They started this venture because Peter had never forgotten the happy experience of coming here when he was a kid. His family had grown to love the whole experience, working alongside each other: handling tickets, parking cars, running the snack shack. Peter liked to joke that every night during the season it felt like they were on a mini vacation together. (“I say to Erika, ‘How many husbands take their wives every weekend to Vermont and go to the drive-in?’”) But he wanted his kids to make the decision. This was their future. The family talked for a long time, and PJ, Tucker, and Cooper finally decided: Let’s do whatever it takes to keep the theater open, and reach out to the community for help. They put a request on their website. Cooper handed out flyers to the cars coming in, PJ hung posters. They set out a donation bucket at the snack shack. They held two

benefit concerts, a benefit auction, sold T-shirts. Money trickled in. They signed up for Honda’s national “Project Drive-In” initiative and urged fans to vote for Fairlee to be one of the five theaters to which Honda would donate new digital projectors. Of course, Fairlee was hardly alone staring at this bullet; most of the remaining U.S. drive-ins faced the same uncertain transition and the same cost. “It’s expensive, and it’s a major commitment,” says Stars and Stripes’ Smith, whose drive-in in Lubbock, Texas, was the first multiscreen to go all digital, “but it’s just what we needed to do.” The Honda voting effort didn’t pan out, and the Trapps were $55,000 short. Knowing there would likely be a waiting list to get digital projectors installed for the 2014 summer season, Peter gambled and ordered the projector, using the money they had raised as a down payment. The family hastily put together a 30-day, Web-based effort to finance the rest through the crowdfunding site Kickstarter. The site uses an all-or-nothing model: If pledged donations didn’t reach the $55,000 goal, they would be zeroed out, and the theater would get nothing. Through the bitterly cold month of February, the family tended to the farm and motel and anxiously watched the computer. “In retrospect,” Trapp says, “probably not the best time to ask for money—when people are thinking about their heating bills, not about going to the movies.” The campaign failed. Still, a new digital projector, with its heavy debt and promise of salvation, was on its way. NOT EVERYONE has suffered because of the digital change. Rather than featuring new releases, popup theaters show classic and niche films for a target audience, meaning they don’t have to invest in expensive new technology. Meanwhile, USA Drive-Ins will soon launch its

sister effort, Cinema Link, which will offer an expansive library of alternative content so that driveins can keep a greater percentage of box-office sales. (Currently, theaters pay studios the majority of their revenue for new releases.) And while technological disruptions presented potentially catastrophic problems for the Trapps in Vermont, it also allowed them to publicize and market their theater in new ways. The family launched a second Kickstarter campaign and set a more attainable goal, close to $30,000. Their plea went out over Twitter and Facebook. If they could raise that much, they could add it to the $22,000 down payment and close the financing gap to a manageable size. It’s a curious thing, an outdated business asking for donations to make its capital investments. Why would people donate? Why would anyone care? The family had reason to be hopeful. Fairlee is an unusual place for a drive-in theater—Vermont has a reputation for welcoming dreamers and romantics and contrarians. Farmers are still a part of the drive-in’s clientele, but so are writers, loggers, college professors, students, truckers, vacationing families making annual visits, kids from summer camps on Lake Fairlee and Lake Morey, parents who had come here as children now with children of their own. And there’s something harder to identify, something having to do with that sense of community W.D. Wetherell wrote about. Peter Trapp feels it every time someone thanks him at the post office or the general store; he senses it in the gratefulness he hears from moviegoers, in the stories that remind them of their history, that connect them in this place. Thus, while drive-ins aren’t resting on nostalgia, they are tapping into something that’s increasingly elusive in a world dominated by personal devices.

“I think that people crave collective experiences: People like being with their families, their neighbors, their town and community,” Dever says. “I

he’s a part of something larger that stretches back more than half a century, to the original owner, Reginald Drowns, who stopped traveling around Vermont with a projector and a popcorn machine to bring his road show home for good. Drowns built the Holiday Park Drive-In in 1950, and renamed it the Hi Way 5 Motel and Drive-In when he added six motel units 10 years later. It was the first of its kind in the country. Drowns had strict ideas about the business. He made sure his movies arrived by Thursday each week so he could personally preview them before showing them to the public on the weekend. He installed a button on the wall next to one of the carbon-arc projectors, which he pushed to kill the sound every time a cuss word was coming. He spliced out racy scenes. His wife, Terri, ran the motel in a similar

They want to watch it together.” Plus, he says, there’s a need for drive-ins to help reintroduce the country to its love affair with film. “Movies are, for better or worse, the key export that America has given to the world.” Trapp has been running the theater for barely 10 years, but he feels

vein. She wouldn’t rent rooms to couples who didn’t look married, or to people who drank beer, which to her included all golfers, hunters, and Dartmouth students. The theater was tucked between a dairy farm and the field where the cows were once pastured. The experience of watching films here included the inconvenience of being interrupted by cows wandering through the parking lot on their way back to the barn. Eventually, the farmer put up a 6-foot-high metal fence around the drive-in parking area. Viewers haven’t been bothered by cows since, though they continue to put up with the high-pitched calls of frogs and crickets. On cool nights late in the season, the river valley fog can turn the screen gauzy or get so thick that viewers can’t see the screen at all. The Trapps show films as scheduled, no matter the weather. “We can’t afford to get a reputation of not staying open when the weather turns sour,” says Peter. He has kept a movie running for a single car.

He remembers one couple who came to a show on a rainy night. To keep the water off the windshield, they extended a sheet of plywood over the cab of their pickup, counter-balancing the weight by perching a tire on top of it. “Those people were professional,” Trapp says. People still talk about the reopening weekend of 1987. A couple from Connecticut named Ray and Elaine Herb took a chance on reviving the motel and drive-in, which had fallen into neglect after being shuttered for a few years. The new owners showed Good Morning, Vietnam that weekend to a big, boisterous crowd. The picture intermittently dimmed and brightened, and the second reel ran completely the wrong way. “I nearly died,” Elaine told a local writer. “There was a helicopter flying upside down and backwards. It turned out the print hadn’t been rewound, and the leader was spliced on upsidedown. The projectionist stopped the show, and it took a while to fix. One fellow got out of his van and played the trumpet!” The attraction of the drive-in has changed over time. These old cow-field setups had been synonymous with summer in the beginning, when there was little else going on in town. They remained a part of summer when drive-ins elsewhere, sitting on more expensive land, shut down in droves. They became a symbol. Peter says he doesn’t really feel like the owner of the Fairlee. “Closing this place would be like closing Mount Rushmore. It belongs to too many people.” Still, someone must take up the mantle for the place to succeed. “I think drive-ins are the last batch of true American cinematic enterprise,” Dever says. “You can’t hide the weak films. If the concessions are bad, they’re bad. You rise and fall on the strength and character of the person who is operating the drive-in.”

07/08/15 11:33 AM

THE NEW PROJECTOR finally arrived that spring. Trapp quickly learned that the days of receiving movies on eight or nine loaded reels weighing 55-plus pounds were long gone. New movies came on a petite hard drive, in a package smaller than a lunchbox. A few computer glitches, some tense phone calls, and a five-hour service call later, it was ready to go. Cars trickled in and parked around the field, waiting. Night fell. Inside the booth, Trapp pulled a long orange string in front of the projector, lifting up a rusted metal curtain to reveal the hole in the cinder-block wall. He tied the string to an old pipe, inserted the hard drive, and swiveled out a large computer screen. “Welcome to the Starship Enterprise,” he said. Outside on the big screen, the dark scenes were crisp. The bright scenes glowed. An explosion illuminated the entire parking lot. The sound, to Trapp’s ear, was much improved. By Memorial Day weekend, the Kickstarter campaign sat nearly $10,000 shy of its goal with a week to go. A wet forecast kept the turnout low for Saturday’s double feature, though the air stayed dry and pleasantly warm. By 8 o’clock, a couple dozen cars were scattered around the lot. More crept along the gravel drive and pulled up to the ticket booth, where Cooper was handling the money. Cash only. A driver said he only had plastic, but Cooper let him through and asked him to pay at the snack shack, where PJ, Tucker, and Erika took orders and served up fries, popcorn with Cabot butter, Ben & Jerry’s ice cream, and burgers fresh from their farm. George Strait’s “Carrying Your Love With Me” warbled out of a nearby speaker. The donations poured in: $5, $100, $1,000, from Vermont and New Hampshire, from New Jersey, from California. The following Saturday, on the last day of the

campaign, Trapp grabbed some fries from the snack shack and walked quickly to the motel to check on something in the office. While there, he glanced at the screen of his computer and saw a blinking notice. They'd done it. On account of 606 donations, a total of $38,075 raised, they officially met their goal. Not all of the new costs were covered yet, but enough. Sometime after midnight, after the last

Big Pharma LITTLE YOU Considering a new medication? Here’s what pharmaceutical litigators say you should know BY JESSICA CENTERS GLYNN

Las Vegas-based personal injury attorney Peter Wetherall of the Wetherall Group says consumers need to understand that the FDA does not conduct any testing of drugs before approval, but rather relies on the testing and reporting submitted by drug companies. “Pharmaceutical companies simply don’t tell doctors everything about their products,” says Seth A. Katz, who focuses on dangerous drug and device litigation at Burg Simpson in Denver. So what can consumers do to protect themselves? Be proactive. It’s important to look for a black box warning on the drug’s label, which outlines the drug’s most significant risks. Consumers should make note of a drug’s approved use. Pharmaceutical injuries can stem from an off-label use, which means using a drug for something other than its FDA-approved purpose. Katz says it’s not at all uncommon for doctors to prescribe drugs for off-label uses—and it’s not illegal—but the manufacturers are not allowed to market them that way. For patients, knowing what is (and is not) on the label can help when making decisions with a doctor.

USE GENERICS AT YOUR OWN RISK.

People should also be aware, Wetherall says, that they’re not as protected legally when taking generic drugs. “With little exception, and as a result of a U.S. Supreme court case called Mensing, generic drugs are immune from personal injury lawsuits. So if you are having your prescriptions filled with generic versions of a branded drug, understand that your right to compensation in the event of an injury is dramatically limited.” CONSIDERATIONS WHEN HIRING A LAWYER

Pharmaceutical cases are complex, and the number of firms with experience leading them is quite small. “By no means is it a lottery,” says Tor Hoerman of TorHoerman Law in Chicago. “People seem to frown upon the litigation system, but it serves a purpose, to expose information. There’s an inherent conflict between the provision of information and profit that is at the root of a lot of the deception that occurs. I don’t know what else can be done about that except that when people get injured they should try hard to bring lawsuits to bring that information to the public. I’m not anti-medicine. I’m against companies not providing proper information to doctors or patients.”

NW FLORIDA BEACHES Growlers from Growler Garage 30A

Timpoochee Trail

SEE Although Grayton Beach State Park was once ranked one of the most beautiful beaches in America by coastal ecologist and author Stephen P. Leatherman (aka Dr. Beach), it’s still fairly quiet. Wander across the postcard-worthy sand dunes, and then watch the sun peacefully dip below the horizon.

DO Set aside an afternoon and go for a spin on Timpoochee Trail, named after a 19th-century Euchee Indian chief. The 18-mile path meanders through quaint neighborhoods and past beaches, dune lakes, and state parks. Follow the mile-by-mile guide on visitsouthwalton.com for a list of places to stop along the way. Not traveling with your bicycle? Big Fish Bike Rentals will have you on the trail in no time.

RELAX To fully unwind from a busy day in South Walton, kick up your feet on the balcony of your stylish condo at One Seagrove Place, overlooking the Gulf of Mexico. Each twobedroom, two-bath retreat has all the amenities you’ll need to make it a home away from home. With its location right on Seagrove Beach, you can enjoy complimentary beachside service (two chairs and an umbrella) while soaking up the sun. If you’re looking for a day in town, One Seagrove Place is located within walking distance of art galleries, top restaurants, and enough eclectic shops to fulfill all your souvenir shopping needs.

But the made-to-order munchies are well worth the wait. For a true Panama City Beach watering hole experience, find your way to Fishale Taphouse and Grill. The gastropub opened just three years ago but has already made a name for itself as one North Florida’s favorite craft-beer houses. SEE Take a break from the beach for a bit and wander into the lush, forested Panama City Beach Conservation Park. The 2,900-acre escape is teeming with wildlife, so pack those binoculars and cameras for impromptu sightings.

This two-hour excursion travels along the coast as Captain “Fearless” Phil points out numerous species of birds and fish. Young ones will stay entertained thanks to sword fighting, treasure maps, pirate tattoos, and even a pint-size cannon. Want to get even closer to the water? Rent a surfboard or paddleboard from Mr. Surf ’s Surf Shop. Before heading off to the beach, eye the Wall of Fame, featuring photos of patrons who have purchased boards from Mr. Surf ’s since the shop opened in 1980.

FOCUS ON REAL ESTATE

Focus on Real Estate By Leigh Morgan The rent vs. buy debate is over. According to real estate website Trulia, owning a home is cheaper than renting in all of the United States’ 100 largest metro areas. Factor in stable housing conditions and low mortgage rates, and you’ll see why new homebuyers—from millennials to baby boomers—are emerging in the marketplace.

FIRST-TIME HOMEBUYERS have one

thing in common: saying goodbye to their landlord. While home ownership may be a step toward personal or financial goals, the likelihood of unexpected repairs can be intimidating. Today’s potential buyers are seeking move-in ready options with little foreseen maintenance, and many desire new, energyefficient homes that will reduce their bills and carbon footprint. As a result, more and more buyers are turning to homebuilders who offer turnkey properties and extensive home warranty programs. Purchasing a home from a builder is not only a sound real estate investment; it also lets homeowners maintain their lifestyle. Two homebuilders in particular are making the transition from renting to owning a more seamless one. august 2015 southwest 97

FOCUS ON REAL ESTATE

A split three-car garage comes standard in the Carlyle model at Valencia Lakes.

GL Homes Some of GL Homes’ value-added services may not be visible at first glance. For nearly 40 years, the Florida-based builder has mentored prospective owners through the buying process, offering tips on home selection and home warranty, as well as mortgage solutions. THIS GUIDANCE HAS proven helpful

to both first-time homebuyers and real estate veterans. GL Homes’ standard features include a complete appliance package, concrete roof tile, a screened and covered patio, and tile in all main living areas. Homebuyers can expect few initial repairs, but should maintenance needs arise, a variety of warranty options also come standard. In addition to their service and warranty program for individual buyers, GL Homes builds quality new communities throughout Florida. Each is carefully planned to be both beautiful and functional— balancing the use of open space, lakes, and recreation areas. More

than 63,000 homeowners can attest to GL Homes’ communities and craftsmanship.

VALENCIA LAKES Lifestyle is of utmost importance at Valencia Lakes, a GL Homes community in Tampa, Florida. This active-adult neighborhood has villas and single-family residences that are perfect for retirees, offering resort-style amenities and lowmaintenance living. Its numerous on-site amenities— including a fitness center, resortstyle pool, tennis courts, resistance pool, softball field, pickleball court, and aerobics studio—are among this community’s most talked-about

features. Residents also have access to an art studio and wine bar inside a 27,000-square-foot clubhouse, which serves as the Valencia Lakes focal point. The community frequently hosts Broadway-style shows and social events as well. A full-time lifestyle director organizes clubs and activities, and is available to help residents navigate the abundance of amenity programs. Valencia Lakes differs from other active-adult communities because it offers a small, boutique experience for residents, says Marisa Lufkin, project manager and vice president of GL Homes. “Our buyers choose to live in Valencia Lakes because they want to enjoy their retirement years by taking up new hobbies, meeting new friends, and staying active,” says Lufkin. In addition to GL Homes’ warranty options, front- and rear-yard maintenance comes standard in a Valencia Lakes property with HOA dues, further protecting homeowners from potential maintenance and repair costs.

Outrun the Tortoise East of Orlando, Brevard County runs along the Atlantic Coast, and its beaches serve as nesting grounds for sea turtles. A crowd of nearly 3,000 will turn out in support of the marine critters at the Turtle Krawl 5K, which begins and ends at James Nance Park and loops through the streets of Indialantic. If a tortoise’s pace is more your speed, consider joining the competitive or noncompetitive walkers’ divisions. Kids can get moving too with the quarter-, half-, or full-mile routes, or the 50-yard finish-line sprint. Proceeds from the race benefit the Sea Turtle Preservation Society, particularly its commitment to funding the Brevard Zoo’s Sea Turtle Healing Center. (The county’s first rehabilitation facility for the aquatic reptiles opened in April 2014 thanks to Krawlers’ support.) Afterward, stick around for a postrace breakfast and massages. turtlekrawl.com SEPTEMBER 12–13 MOUNTAIN VIEW, CALIFORNIA

Honor the Departed

The Knee Diaries: SJ is a 60-year-old male with the chief complaint of knee pain who visited The Center for Regenerative Medicine over a year ago. He was diagnosed with bone-on-bone osteoarthritis of the left knee, causing much pain and discomfort; at that point he was told only a total knee replacement could help him. He is otherwise healthy. On exam he had point tenderness to the medial side of the left knee (medical lingo: inner side). An X-ray showed severe arthritis of the knee (X-ray on the left). Patient started receiving treatments at The Center for Regenerative Medicine. Today he is feeling better (X-ray on the right). This is how it works: The physician introduces Cell Therapy into damaged, arthritic cells by means of a precise injection. This process is followed by several other modalities, including Collateral Artery Flow Exercises (C.A.F.E.), in order to accelerate the process. Depending on tissue damage, severity of the condition and the size of the joint that needs to be injected, people usually need a series of 1 to 6 treatments to improve. There is usually no downtime, and people can go back to their usual activities or work immediately. The treatments can help most musculoskeletal problems such as low back pain, neck pain, knee pain, shoulder pain, whiplash, sciatica, tendinitis, sprain, strains, torn ligaments and cartilage damage. Located in Miami, Florida, The Center for Regenerative Medicine includes a team of professionals that are dedicated to improve your quality of life, paving the way to enhance the science of non-surgical orthopedic medicine. World champions, sports legends, professional and amateur athletes, dancers, and people with just plain pain and arthritis go to The Center for Regenerative Medicine for nonsurgical orthopedic care. Using the facility to improve their condition, thousands of successful cases have been treated over the past nine years.

For three days a year, the oldtimey town of Mesilla, 47 miles north of El Paso and originally part of Mexico, pays homage to its roots and comes to life—if you will—to honor those who have passed. This year’s Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebration, held in Old Mesilla Plaza, will feature lively music, arts and crafts, and kid-friendly activities, not to mention more than 20 vendors serving up authentic food. Tributes to difuntos (the departed) include homemade altars, sugar skulls, photos, flowers, and pan de muerto, a sweet bread. The spirited event culminates on the evening of November 1 with a candlelight procession to the San Albino Cemetery, during which it’s customary to wear black and white face paint and skeleton motifs. Musical instruments and noisemakers are also encouraged. After all, the goal is to awaken the dead from their eternal sleep to share in the festivities. mesillanm.gov

Building a successful business in childcare. Building a better life and a better community. Before owning a Kiddie Academy franchise, Katie and Larry Moore were up-and-coming business professionals. Katie brings more than 10 years of experience working for a large payroll corporation while Larry remains a prominent player at the Chicago Board of Trade. As the parents of two children, they struggled to find a satisfactory

daycare in the area. It was during their search that they decided to embark on a lifelong dream of owning a business. The Moores fell in love with Kiddie Academy, as they believe the franchise possesses all of the qualities they were looking for: caring teachers, a fun atmosphere and a strong curriculum. The Moores revel in their new found sense of purpose in owning a Kiddie Academy franchise. Their children have also seen the perks of their parent’s new business. They’re making lots of new friends and learning essential life skills, all while under the care of their parents! Knowing their children and community are receiving the best education and child care possible has proved to be the biggest benefit of them all.

SPOTLIGHT

READY TO RELAX

The Southwest Porch at Bryant Park reopened in late July.

Building Community in the Big Apple

Visiting New York City? Stay awhile at the Southwest Porch at Bryant Park. At Southwest Airlines, we show love to our Customers throughout their entire travel experience—whether they’re booking a flight at home, in transit at an airport, or flying on one of our planes. But our Hospitality doesn’t stop there. Southwest Airlines is dedicated to the cities we serve and strives to be an integral part of those communities. One of the ways we have done

so is by partnering with local spaces in various cities to create what we call the Southwest Porch—an inviting gathering place in the community. In 2009, we opened the Southwest Porch at Bryant Park in the heart of Manhattan. Recently, we renovated the space, introducing our bold, new look to the design of the Porch’s menus and umbrellas, in addition to shifting the floorplan to allow for an improved Customer experience. We’ve also expanded the menu selection to offer a wide array of meal and snack options, partnering with Bryant Park Corporation and Ark Restaurant Group to offer delicious bites and cold drinks. And on any given day, you can take part in a variety of fun activities in the park, including bingo, concerts, movie screenings, and (in the winter) ice skating. We’re proud to share the love on the ground both with our Customers who live in New York City and those just visiting the Big Apple. If you’re planning a trip to New York, we invite you to stop by to visit the Southwest Porch at Bryant Park—you’re sure to get a taste of our Southwest-style Hospitality. The Porch is open daily; visit Southwest.com/ porch for details. —Alyssa Eliasen

COMMUNITY OUTREACH

Vision Quest

A Silicon Valley institute gives students creative tools.

CENTER STAGE

Students share perspectives at the annual PTP summit.

Picture the Possibilities is an initiative of the Silicon Valley–based Cinequest nonprofit institute, which hosts the annual Cinequest Film Festival. Four years ago, I worked with the co-founders of Cinequest, Kathleen J. Powell and Halfdan Hussey, to launch PTP. At the time, I did not know the impact the program would have. As the manager of PTP, I have met and worked with hundreds of youth, ages 13 to 18. Thanks to sponsors such as Southwest Airlines, we are able to give these young people an incredible, life-changing opportunity. By teaching them how to create films about subjects that are relevant to them,

we help fuel their creativity and empower them to follow their dreams. After seeing how to turn a concept into reality, they can then apply this creative process to other areas of their lives. PTP’s slogan is “Picture the Possibilities. Picture it. Create it.” Our weeklong sessions introduce our “7 Powers of Creating” philosophy and its practical applications to youth from across the world. At the end of each event season, participants come to the PTP Summit in Silicon Valley, where they collaborate with peers and mentors, celebrate their ideas and creativity, and showcase their work. Shannon Ortega, a high schooler from New York, says of her experience:

“The PTP Summit shifted my life. It opened my eyes to show me anything is possible.” “PTP’s 7 Powers of Creating help to achieve any goal,” says Trey Lutton of Silicon Valley, who was in middle school when he participated. “It can be something big that will change the world or something small, like doing better in school.” As much as the participants are inspired through PTP, they have been an even bigger inspiration to me and my team, motivating us to execute the program and summits on a bigger and better scale each year. With the support of our sponsors, global youth can discover the many possibilities that this world holds for them: For example, they can travel to places they want to explore or start the innovative new company that they envision. In other words, they can create anything they put their minds to. So whenever things get tough I remind people to focus on the possibilities. Picture it. Create it. No one is stopping us. With a little help from fellow participants, leaders, and partners like Southwest, anything is possible. —Marcela Villegas

One Question

Pedro Martinez,

You feel that ball in your hand. You’ve been holding it your whole life. You’ve probably seen this batter before, so you start thinking it out. But it happens so fast that it doesn’t even feel like thinking. I would ask myself, how much can I trust what I’ve got today? You rely on what you know, what you’ve studied, how you’ve practiced, how you’ve pitched to him before, how you might surprise him now. Sometimes it was 15 years of games going through my head at once. And then you just let your body take over because it knows how to do the job.

The legendary baseball player was inducted into the Hall of Fame last month. His memoir, Pedro, came out in May.

Defining the Future of the Public Research University

UC San Diego Perspective Understanding and eradicating global inequalities that impact people’s lives calls for scientists and humanists with an extensive and deep knowledge of diverse cultures and behavior. From public-policy experts and social scientists to practicing artists—UC San Diego is forging an interdisciplinary approach to addressing these disparities. Building on an appreciation of multiple cultures and unique perspectives, our work helps reveal the full richness and potential of human experience.

Even a day at the beach provides the UC San Diego community the opportunity to be of service and enrich the environment. Meet the Beach, part of the university’s Volunteer50 initiative, is the annual surfside cleanup event held near UC San Diego’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography.

Gaming the Future

Stephen Foster

Stephen Foster uses the video game Minecraft to teach kids to write programming code. He and fellow graduate students at UC San Diego invented LearntoMod, software that teaches computer science in nontraditional ways. Foster’s goal is to increase the percentage of women and other underrepresented groups in the computerengineering workforce of the future.

Illuminating Race

Jessica Graham, Ph.D.

Jessica Graham, Ph.D., contributes to the increasingly transnational orientation of U.S. history research at UC San Diego and augments the faculty who work on race and ethnicity. She focuses on the issue of race in debates over democracy, fascism and communism in the Americas.

Giving Without Strings

Paul Niehaus, Ph.D.

What if we put more money and power directly into the hands of the poor? Paul Niehaus, Ph.D., co-founded GiveDirectly, which sends no-obligation money to poor people abroad, directly to their cell phones. The results: increased assets and income, reduced domestic violence and improved mental health. GiveDirectly has been awarded a No. 1 charity ranking by GiveWell, and “Leading Global Thinkers” recognition by Foreign Policy magazine.

Examining Emotions Psychologist Christine Harris, Ph.D., studies why patients are ashamed or embarrassed by medical consultations or why people forgive strangers for insulting them. Her research on the impact that emotions have on interpersonal relationships is redefining understanding of how people make real-life decisions.
