Did you know that every 100 airline jobs helps support about 360 jobs outside the industry? In fact, commercial aviation enables 11 million U.S. jobs and generates 5 percent of our nation’s gross domestic product. As the CEO of an airline, I find these figures important. Why should they be important to you? Because they underscore the role that airlines play in the overall health of our economy. It’s hard to identify a single sector that doesn’t benefit either directly or indirectly from strong and healthy airlines. Driving more than $1 trillion in national economic activity every year, a stable airline industry is good news for travelers and for the economy as a whole. Yet, surprisingly, there is no comprehensive government policy in place to support us. For an industry so vital to our nation’s economy, government policies that are supportive and

effective are more than a basic need; they’re a critical imperative. The United States needs to replace its current patchwork of counterproductive operating policies, taxes and fees (which can comprise as much as 20 percent of the cost of a domestic roundtrip ticket), oppressive regulations, and antiquated infrastructure with a National Airline Policy that will enable our country’s airline industry to reclaim its mantle as the global pacesetter. The Federal Aviation Administration is headed in the right direction with its NextGen air traffic control initiative. The majority of air traffic in the U.S. is currently managed with technology from the 1950s, resulting in longer flights, less efficient use of air space, increased fuel consumption, delays, and congestion. NextGen is a modernized, satellitebased system, which, if implemented properly, will allow aircraft to fly more directly and efficiently, thanks to its GPS backbone.

The FAA working with airlines to accelerate NextGen’s implementation would be a huge step toward an effective National Airline Policy. While we have made some progress to implement NextGen in our nation’s air traffic control system, we need the federal government to do more to bring the infrastructure into the 21st century. The good news is that some tools and technologies are already in place in modern jet aircraft—including the vast majority of Southwest Airlines’ fleet of Boeing 737s—that deliver immediate benefits for airlines, passengers, and the environment. (Southwest has already updated cockpit configurations and trained our Pilots on NextGen procedures.) But we need the FAA to help expedite the progress. La mayor parte del tránsito aéreo en los Estados Unidos se maneja actualmente con tecnología que data de la década de 1950, lo cual resulta en vuelos más largos, uso menos eficiente del espacio aéreo, mayor consumo de combustible, demoras y congestión. NextGen es un sistema modernizado y de base satelital que, si se implementa de la manera adecuada, permitirá que

los aviones vuelen trayectos más directos y de manera más eficiente, gracias a su eje central de GPS. La colaboración entre la FAA y las aerolíneas para acelerar la implementación del sistema NextGen constituiría un paso gigante hacia el logro de una Política Nacional de Aerolíneas eficaz. Chris is an ace at fixing tech issues.

When Southwest Airlines’ Network Operations Control needs a tech hero, they call Chris Whorley. Whether it’s an issue with one of the NOC’s many monitors or computer applications or with one of Southwest’s multiple corporate initiatives, Chris finds the solution to the problem. It sounds stressful, but to Chris it’s fun: “I get to come in and play with 80-inch monitors all day!” Keeping the NOC systems operational and up-to-date is a hefty job, but Chris accepts it with tenacity, humility, and a kind, Fun-LUVing Attitude. Chris has spent almost ten years with the NOC Team. (For more about the NOC, see page 124.) He previously worked in Ground Operations in Baltimore/Washington. Over the years, he’s been essential to a variety of special projects, including an initiative to upgrade airport gate and flight information display screens. He was one of three people chosen to complete the project and traveled to 52 Southwest stations not once but twice during the 18-month project. When Chris isn’t calibrating NOC systems or brainstorming new programs, he’s spending time with his wife of ten years, Kim, and his young daughter, Sydney. No matter how tired he is after a long day’s work, when he gets home and Sydney says, “Daddy!,” he’s ready to play. Chris met Kim, who now works in the Southwest People Department, when they both worked in Baltimore/Washington Ground Operations. An avid traveler, Chris originally thought about being a pilot and actually got his license. But he found himself in LUV with the airline’s tech side and preferred being grounded near his family. In his current job, he combines two of his favorite things: People and airplanes. He also LUVs the flight perks. “Kim and I are our parents’ only children, so Southwest gives us the Freedom to spend time with family and allows our parents to see their grandchild,” Chris says. As a stand-up comedian and magician, Daniel Martin visits cities across the nation, bringing audiences his hilarious interactive magic show. He takes more than 100 flights a year, nearly all on Southwest. “Southwest has been a tour partner without even knowing it,” Daniel says. “I’ll travel hours out of the way just to fly Southwest. I can always rely on them to get me where I’m going, which is important to me as an entertainer.” Daniel started performing when he was 6 years old and became a professional at age 12. Now he develops new shows annually and performs at corporate events, theaters, and universities. With Southwest’s Legendary Customer Service, Bags Fly Free policy, and low-cost travel, Daniel says flying Southwest as a Member of the airline’s Rapid Rewards Frequent Flyer program is a “no-brainer.” “From free flights to shorter lines, Rapid Rewards makes traveling easier,” Daniel says. When he’s flying every day for weeks at a time, it helps to have an easy routine. “Southwest gives me the Freedom to relax and catch up on normal things, which sets it apart from other carriers. No matter what happens, they take care of me.” Over the past five years, Daniel has developed a great passion for sharing his magic with Southwest Customers and enthusiastic Flight Attendants. He found that fellow Passengers were constantly leaning in to watch him practice, so he started hosting mini magic shows, which have become known as Mile High Magic. These shows focus on simple, 15- to 20second-long tricks performed onboard and can be viewed on Daniel’s Instagram account (@IamDanielMartin). One of Daniel’s favorite tricks—and one we’re pretty glad he doesn’t perform onboard— involves bringing crowd members onstage and making them disappear. From his Mile High Magic shows to audiences of thousands, Daniel loves to entertain and is happy to fly Southwest along the way. “Southwest always has my back,” he says. DATE BY NUMBERS With so many dating options out there, why did you choose It's Just Lunch? D: I travel a lot for work, so I’d read

about It’s Just Lunch in airline magazines, and then I ran into a friend who was attending the wedding of an attorney in town who’d met her husband through IJL – the fact that those two events happened so close together, I thought I should call them. At the end of my work day I didn’t want to come home and go look at profiles online. I felt like it was a waste of my time.

M: I had gotten a divorce and then did online dating for a while before joining IJL. I joined mainly because it’s a lot of work to do the online thing. You have to keep up on it. You never really know who you’re going to meet. IJL was just a lot easier. They found people for me based on what I was looking for and I just had to show up. You don’t have to do much work. What would you tell a friend who was apprehensive about investing the money on IJL? D: I thought if someone is going to pay

to join IJL, they’re going to be more serious and what I’m looking for – it’s easy to do online dating; anybody can do it. I wanted somebody who was serious about finding someone and wanted a real long-term relationship. I’d ask, “Are you looking for a relationship or not?” With online dating you never know who’s on the other side of the line. IJL had better quality people who were interesting to me. It truly was an experience that was tailored for me.

M:

Describe your first meeting with an IJL matchmaker? M: I had a phone interview first and then went in and met with a matchmaker. It really made me think. Online you can say anything, but if you’re paying for this I assume you’re not going to lie about what you want.

D: She asked me questions about myself, what I like to do, what I want in a relationship, whether I’d marry someone who already had kids, how important religion is, that kind of thing. It would take much longer to find out someone else’s answers to those questions through online dating. This was black and white. Tell us about your first date with one another. D: I never went on lunch dates because

I was always busy at work so I met Michael after work at a downtown restaurant. The conversation just flowed. I was attracted to him from the start. I remember it turned into dinner.

I’m good at having a conversation if I’m interested in somebody, and I was interested in her. We had a great conversation. I don’t think either of us wanted to leave.

M:

What was your favorite part about dating through IJL? D: I met my husband, so I guess I would

say that! It’s Just Lunch – it’s just a lot of fun. I remember I’d get off a plane and have a voicemail from the matchmaker saying she had a potential date for me. She would tell me about the person and was flexible with scheduling.

With online dating, you can go back and forth and waste a month with someone and not really get to know them. With IJL, you go meet your match and if you like them, you see them again, and if you don’t, you’re done.

M: I liked that they’d just call me up and say they had a date for me. You have to eat, so it was a nice way to meet people. If you’re interested, then you move forward. One of the best pieces of advice I ever got came from a well-dressed woman in an exclusive private club in New York City. She had worked her way up from a sales job to owning her own business. “To get someone to love you, have them do you a favor,” she said. “You mean do them a favor.” “No,” she said. “I mean the opposite.” Suddenly I got it. Doing someone a kindness allows you to express your best character, a gift all its own. In that sense, it really is better to give than to receive. I looked at my new friend and thought, Wow. We’ll all be working for her someday. And right there you find the heart of Southwest. Its spirit lies in people doing things for each other, beyond the call of duty. Other companies issue videos and guidelines; Southwest empowers employees to help people. If they seem to really like you, it’s because they do. One big

reason? They’re either ready to go out of their way for you, or they already have. The airline does not tell employees to be nice. Instead, it propels them to do favors. Those extraordinary acts of kindness are what inspired Grant Stoddard to hit the streets of New York City on a mission to do good deeds for strangers (read about his quest on page 66). What he discovered: It’s harder than it looks. But he also learned that making someone else’s day vastly improves your own. As for the person who gave me that advice in the first place, the one I thought we’d all be working for someday: I ended up working for her. Her advice has been a gift. I have been a Southwest as A-Lister for a few years the and always enjoy reading lights your magazine. Nicole go down Kear’s article in the July issue [“As the Lights Go Down”] about her battle with blindness touched my heart. In 2011, at the age of 39, I was diagnosed with Ménière’s disease and told I would gradually lose my hearing over the next few years. I now wear hearing aids in both ears. Like Nicole, I have embraced my illness and the impact it will have on my future. Her story was inspiring. I continue to strive to hear every little thing, especially the sound of my children’s laughter. You might not expect a woman who’s going blind to be optimistic. But for Nicole Kear, a dim diagnosis illuminated the path to a very bright future.

In 1987 my husband and I visited a friend of his in Kuala Lumpur. Her husband was the owner of the Famous Amos franchise in Malaysia. As we left them to tour Burma, he gave us a tin of chocolate chip cookies decorated in cheery Hawaiian flowers as a treat. It was a good thing he did—we later succumbed to gastrointestinal problems on account of the water and food, and those cookies and local Australian beer were our lifesavers. Although the cookies are long gone, the tin and pleasant memories of Malaysia, Burma, and Famous Amos remain. Mr. Amos [“Are You Famous Amos?” September 2013] sounds like an interesting man with lots of energy and vision. We wish him well.

How do bad habits form? “There are a lot of factors involved, but it has to do with each of us really having two minds,” O’Connor says. “The conscious mind does our thinking, and it’s the one that we’re aware of. But our unconscious mind controls 99 percent of our lives, most of that being habits we repeat without even thinking.”

How do they affect our lives? “I see a lot of people who end up hating themselves. They’re ashamed that they can’t take back control, and they develop this inner critic who constantly judges them. It gets bigger as it gains momentum, like a snowball going downhill, eventually becoming its own problem entirely.”

What’s the science behind it? “The brain frequently forms new synapses when two neurons are stimulated simultaneously. In the example of procrastination, every time we put something off, we build up a new network of cells that increases the likelihood of this behavior reoccurring. The brain never dismantles these connections, so the habits actually become hardwired.”

So how do you break a bad habit? “You have to replace it with a positive behavior, deliberately practicing it in order to build new connections in the brain that translate to wiser decisions. Focusing on one bad habit, write down all the reasons why you want to change it. This will make you more aware. Then, observe when it happens to pinpoint the triggers.”

Key, an attorney and amateur poet, penned the ballad after seeing U.S. soldiers defiantly raise a 30-by-42-foot flag over the fort the morning after. The annual output of a single specimen of Coffea arabica (about 4,000 beans) keeps the average java drinker wired for only two weeks. But what goes into the grinder isn’t quite what you see on the branch. Coffee trees yield fruit called cherries, which, when ripe, resemble cranberries in shape and color. Removing the outer flesh reveals two beans per cherry, which are washed, dried, and then roasted. The U.S. drinks more coffee than any other nation, and since only two places within our borders (Hawaii and Puerto Rico) have the tropical conditions needed to cultivate the crop, we fuel our coffee habit by importing 3.3 billion pounds each year. Benefit corporations abide by altruistic standards.

HEN MARLENE England and her husband, Tom, decided to start an independent bookstore in Frederick, Maryland, they did something many business owners do: They pledged to donate a percentage of their proceeds to charity. Then they did something unusual: They enshrined that social mission in their incorporation documents to make it legally binding. The Curious Iguana bookstore, which opened last September, is a benefit corporation—a new kind of corporate structure for companies that choose to hold themselves to strict standards when it comes to things like environmental impact, charitable giving, and employee welfare. The movement’s aim is to create accountability and legal protection for the growing number of companies who pursue good corporate citizenship goals. “My husband and I love the products we sell and the customers we serve, but we also feel strongly that giving back should be a component,” England says. “Becoming a benefit corporation gave us the opportunity to put that philosophy front and center. the world but also a skeptical insistence on seeing the results of such efforts disclosed and analyzed. Companies looking to meet the requirements of a benefit corporation can choose any third-party standard set by any organization they like. B Lab has a wide-ranging set of standards applicable to a variety of industries. Other popular options include the Sustainable Agriculture Network’s

For a clothing company, this might mean audits to prevent the use of sweatshops; for a restaurant, the use of responsibly sourced ingredients. The concept of a corporate class specifically for companies with a conscience is a relatively new one. Four years ago, Maryland became the first state to pass benefit corporation legislation. To be eligible for the state’s statute, companies must create a “general public benefit” and publish an annual report on their work, measured against “a thirdparty standard.” The aim is to ensure that profit isn’t the sole driving force behind a company’s decision-making process. Today, 27 states have passed similar bills, and lawmakers in at least a dozen more are pursuing them. The 1,000 or so companies nationwide that are registered as benefit corporations range from small shops and sole proprietors to national brands like Patagonia and King Arthur Flour. A legislative wave like that doesn’t happen without a powerful lobbying push. The instigator here is B Lab, a nonprofit formed eight years ago whose founders have not only an evangelical belief in the power of motivated entrepreneurs to improve

certification program or the International Organization for Standardization’s ISO 26000 guidance for socially responsible enterprises. The incorporation framework is intentionally flexible so that businesses can customize their charter to their own industry and needs. THE START OF A MOVEMENT

Like many of the entrepreneurs B Lab appeals to, Jay Coen Gilbert, one of the organization’s founders, is a savvy businessman with a gonzo streak. He started his career at McKinsey & Company and then launched the basketball apparel company AND1, which at its peak grossed $250 million in annual sales. In 2005, he sold it, and when he and his business partner, Bart Houlahan, regrouped a year later to plan their next venture, they decided that what excited them most about AND1 was its corporate culture. “We wouldn’t have self-identified as a green or sustainable or responsible company— it was a pretty testosterone-driven team sports mentality—but we tried to be a force for good,” Gilbert says. The company audited its supply chain to avoid sweatshops, funded a variety of employee wellness programs, and donated a share of its profits to youth development and education programs. “We thought,

What if instead of starting a single company, we could support thousands or tens of thousands of companies who were doing that?” B Lab set out to solve a few problems that socially conscious businesses frequently encounter. First, if you tell the world that your company is committed to goals like environmental responsibility and treating workers well, how do you prove it? And how do you know how effective your practices actually are? B Lab’s response was a benchmarking tool it calls the B Impact Assessment. The free, online quiz presents business owners with a series of detailed questions on topics like supply chain, energy use, compensation structure, community involvement, and internal transparency. By taking the quiz, companies get feedback that includes two numerical scores: one for themselves and a median for comparison that aggregates all the organizations that have completed the assessment. It also has a certification program for those that meet its standards and are willing to undergo audits, and pay fees, to prove it. Such companies are called B Corps. B Lab’s goal: Someday the distinction will be as recognizable and impactful as USDA Organic, Fair Trade, and LEED. Essentially, a stamp of approval that consumers can trust. More than 1,000 companies have become B Corps, undergoing B Lab’s assessment and audit and paying yearly dues that range from $500 for companies with under $1 million in annual sales to $25,000 for those that gross more than $100 million a year. Certified companies must also publish a biennial report, available on B Lab’s website, revealing their assessment score and how it compares to others. Kristofor Lofgren was among the first to sign up. Bamboo Sushi, his small chain of restaurants in Portland, Oregon, is dedicated to serving sustainable seafood and educating

the public about it. Going through B Lab’s assessment was eye-opening: “You think you’re treating your employees well, and then you see all the things you could do better,” he says. “We’ve implemented new practices because of it. We now have maternity and paternity leave, which is pretty unique in the restaurant business, and we improved our health care benefits. We also made it easier for team members to give anonymous feedback to management.” TO PROTECT AND TO SERVE

B Lab’s exacting standards have yet to filter into state legislation. Lawmakers have shied away from being too specific about what benefit corporations should be doing or how they should be audited. So why have so many states created this nebulous corporate structure, and why are so many companies interested in it? Part of it is that benefit corporation status provides assurance to business owners who fear that existing corporate law doesn’t sufficiently protect companies that prioritize social goals. Consider the case of Ben & Jerry’s, the poster child that inspired the movement. The 36-year-old icecream maker is famously dedicated to environmental responsibility and community investment, but in 1984 it went public, transferring control from its founders to investors. In 2000, Unilever launched a takeover bid. Because its offer far exceeded the stock’s trading price, the board of directors felt compelled to accept the deal “despite the fact that they did not want to sell,” co-founder Ben Cohen told NPR in 2010. The disaster many feared in the acquisition’s wake didn’t come to pass—Unilever operates Ben & Jerry’s as an independent subsidiary that still pursues its ideals. Still, it spooked many business owners who worry that their altruistic initiatives might disappear in the event of a transfer of ownership. “We realized

Business there was a problem here that needed to be solved if this movement was going to scale,” B Lab’s Jay Coen Gilbert says. Most states give the directors of a benefit corporation leeway to do anything they reasonably believe to be in line with the company’s mission. It explicitly allows them to consider broader impacts on employees, customers, and the community, whereas

a high-profile legal stress test. In theory, benefit corporation status offers protection; in practice, however, a company’s leadership team—or its new owners—always has the option of re-incorporating. A company can stop being a benefit corporation just as easily as it can become one. In the case of baby food maker Plum Organics, though, it worked. The company opened in 2007

the traditional model only considers fiscal performance. In the case of Ben & Jerry’s, the idea is that benefit corporation status would have given the directors greater protection against shareholder lawsuits if they turned down Unilever’s bid—or, if they still chose to take it, would have provided a legal structure to ensure that the company’s social ideals, in addition to its sales figures, were passed on to Unilever. THE DOUBLE BOTTOM LINE

Some investors are embracing the concept because they believe that, over time, it’s healthy for a company. Albert Wegner, a partner at the influential technology venture capital firm Union Square Ventures, is a fan. One of the most prominent companies in his portfolio, the online marketplace Etsy, is a certified B Corp. “We have a financial system right now with an obsessive focus on short-term performance,” he says. “My partners and I think the businesses that will provide the best benefits for both investors and society are those that focus on being good long-term stewards.” But because the concept of benefit corporations is just a few years old, and because the vast majority of its participants are tiny, private companies, it hasn’t yet faced

and grew its annual sales to $90 million before agreeing last year to be acquired by the Campbell Soup Company. So far, the transition has gone smoothly, with Campbell’s supporting Plum’s B Corps certification and the transparency and philanthropic projects it requires. “This is not the classic ‘big company buys small company, value goes away’ deal,” says Neil Grimmer, Plum’s co-founder and president. “Campbell’s really got that our values and mission are a core part of what we provide consumers, and that translates into good business.” B Lab’s top priority right now, Gilbert says, is to convince many more companies of the link between values and profit. It encourages businesses of all sizes to try its free assessment quiz (bimpactassessment.net) to see how they rate. “We want every business to have the tools to make and measure a positive impact on workers, their community, and the environment,” he says. “The objective is not just to grow the community of B Corps or benefit corporations. HE BOOK of Love was written by the philosopher Aristotle and rewritten by Southwest. Study them both and you’ll learn how to become a beloved brand— or a beloved person. Aristotle was a provably brilliant teacher. Among his more notable pupils: Alexander the Great. After some early successes—like, you know, conquering the known world—Alexander carried out an even greater ambition: turning conquered peoples into proud citizens of the Greek Empire. (As

any occupying force will tell you, this took some persuading.) In short, Alexander captured nations—and hearts. The love part came straight from Aristotle. We know all this because the notes can be found in a book called Rhetoric. I like to call it the Book of Love. The book teaches that the most powerful tool of persuasion is the leader’s public ethos, or image. If people love you, they’ll follow you anywhere. Aristotle taught that a compelling character is more persuasive than perfect logic. Mind you, this is the philosopher who invented logic as we know it. Image trumps logic. (He blamed our “sorry human nature.”) So how does Aristotle’s Book of Love work for a person or an entire corporation? I can sum up the technique in three words: Caring, Craft, and Cause.

ARING MEANS your audience—family, friends, future employers, customers—believe you have their best interest at heart. Remember the movie Miracle on 34th Street? When the Santa at Macy’s learns that the store doesn’t have the toy a particular little boy wants, he tells the boy’s mother where she can find it. Word spreads that Macy’s favors kids over its own profit, and the store gets flooded with mail—and customers. Mr. Macy himself endorses the Santa policy, proclaiming, “This way Macy’s will be known as the store with a heart.” Which may remind you of another company with a heart. Southwest empowers its employees to serve customers in personal ways. This is Caring at its strategic, and heartfelt, best. SEPTEMBER 2014 SOUTHWEST

BIG FAT GREEK WORD: Aristotle called Caring eunoia (you-NOYah). Loose translation: selflessness. In persuasion, the important thing is not just to be selfless but to convince your audience that you are. CARING PHRASE: “The extra mile.” As in, “I’ve always gone the extra mile for clients.” Use it in a job interview.

HARACTER-WISE, Caring is to Santa as Craft is to MacGyver. It’s about knowing your stuff and making your audience know you do. A crafty character knows when to use the rule book and when to depart from it. Take Apollo 13, in which NASA engineers jury-rig a CO2 scrubber—using, among other things, the cover of the flight manual. You don’t get more symbolically crafty than that.

This does not mean simply being creative; it means being creative with a reason. Seek your inner NASA engineer, and let people see it. AUSE IS your audience’s belief that you stand for something larger. You share their values and represent them perfectly. Apple Computer’s cause under Steve Jobs was elegant awesomeness—design so

great it seemed like a whole new art form. A good cause can be summed up in just a couple of words. If your organization’s cause looks like a committee wrote it, then it’s not one; it’s a mission statement. Southwest became famous for fostering the freedom to fly. By lowering fares in underserved markets, it let regular folks take to the skies. An excellent cause, not to mention a profitable one. BIG FAT GREEK WORD: Arête (AR-uh-tay), or “virtue.” A great cause embodies the values of the audience. You know when Hollywood Roman soldiers shout the slogan “strength and honor”? The actual Romans shouted, “Virtue and honor!” That’s because soldiers represent a cause: their country. GOOD CAUSE PHRASE: “The important thing is…” In Miracle on 34th Street, Santa tells the mother, “The important thing is to keep the children happy.” What is the most important thing to you—or rather, the cause that will make your audience love you? Now do your homework. Perform a character check of your résumé. Search for elements of Caring, Craft, and Cause. Show instances where you’ve gone the extra mile in your work. Don’t just list achievements; list solutions to specific problems. Skip the objectives, and state a cause that appeals to employers. Once you start thinking about projected character, you’ll find yourself trying to balance Caring, Craft, and Cause in your daily life. People will love you for it. Here’s an actual question: When writing your character in The Mindy Project, how do you make her lovable? One of the biggest things was giving her a job that allows her to help people. She’s a doctor. She talks to nervous pregnant women, which shows, I hope, that she’s got some empathy. She also pays for her brother’s college education, she doesn’t come from a lot of money, and she works really, really hard. I think those things help the audience connect with her when she’s showing some of her less lovable aspects. You wrote Steve Carell’s character for about 20 episodes of The Office. Initially he was harsh and unlikable. Why did

audiences grow to love him? They needed time to get to know him better. In TV, just like in life, it’s about humans meeting other humans and taking a little while to discover the things they love about each other. What do you think makes you lovable? More than “lovable,” I hear people tell me a lot—and I find this really gratifying—that they wish I were their best friend. It’s probably because even though I’m chatty, I’m a really good listener. What do you find lovable in other people? The sense and appreciation that they’re not entitled to anything. I love people who are willing and happy to work hard for everything they want and believe in. Anything else? A lot of people love cheerful people, but when I think of the most lovable people I’ve known, they’re not the ones who are instantly charming. I WOULD SCOUR the sidewalks and subways of New York City in pursuit of strangers in need of a hand. I would guide a lost soul across the city. Carry someone’s bags to lighten their load. Find a gig for a struggling street musician. Heft an air conditioner up the stairs to rescue a family from the sweltering summer heat. We all hear these tales. Someone leaves an oversize tip for a dedicated waitress or buys groceries for another person in the checkout line. Despite our collective shouting about the world gone wrong, people still do nice things for one another. How hard could it be? Well, after one week: I’ve been scolded for interrupting a phone conversation. Lost tourists have brushed me off. I’ve been flatly ignored, gotten really strange looks, been lectured on my uselessness, and received some bizarre requests via Craigslist. And then I nearly met my end. After hours of desperately scanning city streets for people to assist, I found myself walking along the Bowery, a Lower Manhattan strip that once rivaled Fifth Avenue for its glamour before becoming “Skid Row” in the 1940s. Today, gleaming high-rise condos and a Whole Foods mingle with lighting stores and kitchen gadget wholesalers. This is where I happened upon a gentleman feverishly searching a small patch of concrete. 68 SOUTHWEST SEPTEMBER 2014

“Hey, man,” I said gamely, once I was within 10 yards. “Can I help you? Did you lose something?” He turned, glared at me for two beats, and then plucked a discarded fluorescent light tube from a garbage can and smashed it on the rim. He brandished the razor-sharp, foot-long remainder in his right hand and beckoned me toward him, grunting unintelligibly. I darted into the relative safety of oncoming traffic, astounded that my first real opportunity to brighten a stranger’s life almost cost me my own. When I recount this story to my friend Annie that night, she finds it funny. It’s a steamy July evening, and we’re strolling through the chic neighborhood of Nolita. She is wide-eyed, laughing, her hands plastered to her face. “I didn’t know that sort of thing still happened here,” she says. In my 16 years here, I’ve rarely encountered anything so reminiscent of the hardscrabble city life of yesteryear. Although, a confession: I’m a busy New Yorker and seldom tuned in to this particular frequency. Don’t get me wrong. I’ll offer directions when asked and even give a guy a dollar or two if I’m feeling flush. But these are piddling tasks. I’m loath to admit as much, but as my own prospects have improved over time, it seems I notice the needs of others less. The more I’m able to help, the less I actually do. At 11 p.m., the day’s heat still radiates from the concrete. We pass a park on the corner of Mulberry and Spring, and through the iron railings I lock eyes with a curly-haired woman who looks to be in her early 20s. “Are you stuck in there?” LETTERING BY WILL BRYANT

I ask, mostly out of curiosity. After staring down a tube of serrated glass, I’ve shed my Good Samaritan guise for the night. “Yeah,” she says, taking a drag of her cigarette. “Some lady yelled out that the park was closing, but when we got to the gate, it was locked, and she’d already taken off. We talked to a cop when he passed by 10 minutes ago, but I don’t think he’s coming back.” There’s another, more harried young woman alongside her, who is clearly not handling the incarceration as well. Annie squeezes my elbow. “This is your chance to help!” she implores. “Uh,” I stammer. “Can I get you over these railings? Maybe I could climb in and try and boost you over the top.” “I don’t think we can make it over the spikes without getting hurt,” the calm one says, pointing to the medieval fencing. “Then how are you going to get out?” I ask, my sole idea a nonstarter. My question sends the unnerved woman into further panic. “How are we going to get out? How are we going to get out?” she repeats frantically. Her friend attempts to seize her flailing arms. I find myself backing away as the meltdown escalates. “That’s it?” Annie says in disbelief. “You’re done helping?” Annie’s horrified stare compels me to comfort the panicky woman. “It’s okay,” I say, lacking conviction. “You’re going to be out of there very soon. Try not to worry.” Mercifully, the cop reappears on the scene with a sledgehammer and smashes the padlock. The 20-strong crowd, drawn by the clanging, cheers wildly for the young officer. He’s a hero. I, on the other hand, feel impotent. Suddenly the distressed woman runs over and envelops me in an enthusiastic hug. “Thanks for the moral support!” she says, before her embarrassed friend drags her off into the night. “There you go,” Annie says with a sarcastic smirk. “You kinda sorta helped!” NCE, AT THE tender age of 3, I left home early one morning dressed as Batman: cape, utility belt, the works. Toting my civilian clothes in a mini wicker suitcase, I cut a conspicuous figure in my sleepy hometown in southeastern England. Perhaps if I’d worn my civvies and packed the costume, I could’ve gone far. Instead, our milkman, Bert, saw right through the disguise.

He intercepted and delivered me back to my family. During the five-minute escape, they hadn’t yet noticed my absence. My dreams of heroism were up on bricks. Now here I am, 34 years later, in the pulsing heart of Gotham, eager to save the day. My uniform is understated, at least for a New Yorker: pink shorts, polo shirt, navy blue Top-Siders, and tortoiseshell Wayfarer sunglasses. My biggest obstacle, however, I didn’t anticipate: how to spot those in need of rescuing. In the afternoon I home in on a woman sitting on the sidewalk, her sobs rising above her drawnup knees and floppy hat. I imagine consoling her, perhaps even proposing a tonic to brighten her day, and approach cautiously so as not to startle her. “Hi there,” I begin. “I couldn’t help noticing…” She stops, shoots me a contemptuous glare, and points at her ear, against which she holds her smartphone. “Sorry,” I offer, before slinking off. Are people simply out of practice when it comes to accepting help from strangers? Hardly surprising. Fear of the few bad guys out there often erodes our faith in the overwhelming majority who are predisposed to helping one another. Throughout history, human progress has resulted from remarkable cooperation. Kindness, among other things, has enabled us to become the dominant species. Hours later I duck into a bank to withdraw some cash, and a conflict erupts in the line beside me. The fellow to my left is hearing impaired, and the teller brusquely instructs him that his check will not be available for withdrawal until tomorSEPTEMBER 2014 SOUTHWEST

row. The man desperately explains that he needs a hundred bucks right away, but the teller’s only advice is to try an unspecified “check-cashing place.” Dejected, he drifts out into the afternoon heat. I feel for his plight, then abruptly wake up to the fact that I should help. I wrap up my transaction and dart outside, but the cash-strapped stranger has vanished. On my way home, I’m distraught by my failure. A lapse in concentration, a moment consumed by my own needs, and I’m unable to connect intent with action. As I arrive at my stoop, I’m so preoccupied with this thought that I nearly miss another opportunity. An exhausted young couple sits on my bottom step, their tatty personal effects strewn around them in backpacks and plastic bags. They hoist a cardboard sign: “Stranded. Need $ for bus ticket to Tennessee.” I ask about the cost. “It’s $225 for the both of us,” the guy says, “but we only need another $30.” Tyler is a discharged soldier who served in Afghanistan and was formerly stationed in Tennessee, near the home of his companion, Sarah. I give them the money and wish them luck. Tyler shakes my hand, while Sarah wipes tears from her grimy cheeks. “You are so kind,” she says, throwing her arms around Tyler’s shoulders. “Now we can go home!” NSPIRED, I RUSH upstairs and make my own sign, albeit a digital one. My Craigslist post: Hey there. Do you need a hand on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday? Do you need something that will make your life measurably better in a minor or major way? I’m devoting myself to the service of strangers this holiday weekend. If you need a hand with something, I’m going to come help you out and make your day/week/month/year. Responses are random: a request to borrow a Dremel rotary tool for a craft project, a solicitation to serve as tour guide for a tourist visiting the city, and a plea for help in finding a job. That last message is from Holly, a single mother of two in Brooklyn. After brainstorming how to help, I offer to fine-tune her résumé, a volunteer service I have some experience with. However, after our initial, rapid-fire exchange, our correspondence suddenly drops off. I have more luck with Facebook, though many friends are rightfully suspicious of my motives. Through a friend, I’m connected to Myra. The morning of my Facebook post, Myra’s

transit pass was swiped from her purse, and her employer refused to replace it. She can’t afford to pay $112 for a new monthly MetroCard because a year ago, at 38, Myra was diagnosed with lymphoma. She’s burdened with mounting medical bills due to costly stem cell transplants. Her distraught Facebook post concludes: “Seriously, my life is a joke.” I message Myra and offer a new pass. She’s thrilled and embarrasses me by suggesting I’m an “angel.” We arrange to meet at her apartment. At the subway station, it strikes me that I can help folks without their consent. “Free swipe!” I say as people approach the turnstile. “Uh, okay,” says the first person through, wrinkling her nose disdainfully. Another halts, reverses out of the turnstile, and swipes his own card through an adjacent one. Though miffed at first, I recall a time when I refused a stranger’s help. About 10 years ago, I wasn’t doing so well. Undernourished, scruffy, and sitting in a park, I attracted the attention of some kindly ladies giving out free sandwiches to the poor. I really could have used that meal, but I took umbrage with their offer. It was a case of pride, I suppose. I can’t pretend to know what irked this particular guy, but I’m familiar with the indignant feeling an unsolicited kindness can create. I swipe for another 10 minutes, smiling all the while. Most passersby seem appreciative and

touched, or at least amused, by two dollars and fifty cents’ worth of random kindness. YRA WELCOMES ME into her cozy apartment like an old friend. Her hair is growing back in the wake of chemotherapy, and she talks loudly, gesticulating with every word. She works in the media industry and is about my age, which makes her suffering feel more personal. “Getting my MetroCard stolen was definitely a blow,” she says. “But my company refusing to replace it was what really left a bad taste in my mouth.” She felt abandoned. I pass her the new card and she embraces me. “It might not seem like much, but this really is a huge help for me,” she says. “You’re a hero.” I’m buoyed by Myra’s gratefulness, but there’s a problem. Despite my efforts and good intentions, I’m still no champion of the weak and defenseless. While travelling to her apartment in

FOREFATHER OF GOOD WILL In 1938, Action Comics No. 1 debuts Superman, who saves an innocent Evelyn Curry from execution. He flies in with the real criminal bound-and-gagged, and then breaks down a steel door to awaken the governor and secure a pardon.

Spanish Harlem, I stood by as a woman in front of me berated an elderly, shirtless and toothless man who claimed the seat next to her. Apparently, she found his odor offensive. She moved away but continued to harangue him for all to hear. “You smell nasty!” she shouted. “Take a shower! It’s giving me a headache!” The man smiled weakly, shrugged, and shook his head. As her assault continued, he stared off into space. I wanted to help him; I really did. Initially I convinced myself that I didn’t know what action to take, but there was no shortage of options. I could have taken him to my apartment, offered him a shower, given him a few sets of my clothes, and bought him something to eat. But as the lady so cruelly pointed out, he was repulsive. His wretchedness and utter hopelessness made it too inconvenient. But there was another option that didn’t strike me until later: I could have at least stood up for the guy. Defending the weak and vulnerable, isn’t this the very essence of heroism? Why didn’t I speak up?

CHEMICAL REACTION In 1964’s Daredevil No. 1, studious teenager Matt Murdock sees an Ajax Atomic Labs truck careening toward a blind man crossing the street; he pushes the senior citizen out of the way, getting splashed by toxic chemicals in the process. The accident both blinds him and amplifies his other senses in this Daredevil origin story.

MEETING OF THE MINDS Shortly after Dick Grayson overhears thugs trying to extort money from a circus owner, his acrobat parents die in an “accident.” Batman, who attends the fateful show as Bruce Wayne, convinces the lad not to go to police for fear they’ll kill him too, and then takes him in and transforms him into Robin in Detective Comics No. 38 from 1940.

DITCH THE DIGITAL feelers and go for something tangible, heading to the Staples in Union Square and buying a marker and pack of giant, pink Post-its to craft a sign: IN A JAM? I WANT TO HELP YOU TODAY! JUST ASK! I brace my new weapon like a shield against my chest and surge into the throngs of people crisscrossing the square. Some look perplexed; others smile warmly. I barely make it 10 steps before a guy sporting a vest the color of my sign strikes up a conversation. “Hey man, is this for real?” he asks. Hector tells me that what I’m doing is “really cool.” His friend is less impressed. “What do you know that can help me?” he asks incredulously. I admit to having no special knowledge. “Then how are you in a position to help anyone?” he asks. He shakes his head and walks away, but his cynicism bolsters my resolve. “Can you spot me a subway fare?” Hector asks. He assures me it’s all he needs, so I hand over my own MetroCard. He grins and hugs me, and then

chases after his friend to relay the good news. Seconds later a young man named Simba approaches. “Can you do something for my friend here?” he asks. David, he tells me, has been sleeping on the street since he arrived from Florida a week ago—he was robbed of his cash savings his first night in town. David is shirtless and all ribs, but his words are measured and intelligent. The three of us make the short hike to McDonald’s, but just as we’re about to order David stuns me by refusing the meal. “Hey, if you can only help one person,” he says, “there’s someone who needs your help more than I do.” David leads the way to a nearby park, where Jonathan sits surrounded by a small crew of friends, his lower leg swaddled in bandages. An injury has temporarily cut off his meager income as a bike messenger. He and his friends are hungry and tired, but Jonathan’s chief concern is for his son, a toddler named Thor. The little guy has olive skin, green-blue eyes, and wavy brown hair. He looks happy and relatively healthy despite the colossal challenges his parents face in caring for

him. Today is his third birthday, the exact age when I left home dressed as Batman, seeking someone in need of rescue. Finally, here’s my chance. I grab lunch for the whole crew, but there’s more to do. One of Jonathan’s friends suggests surprising him with movie tickets to celebrate Thor’s birthday, so I buy a gift card to the nearby theater. Jonathan gushes. “Me and his mom can take him to see the movie he’s been talking about. He gets to feel special, like a normal kid on his birthday.” N ONE LAST effort with my sign, I trek to the East Village. “Yo! Is this for real? Can you help me get published?” asks Zachary Scott Hamilton, an aspiring poet from Portland, Oregon. I jot down his email, tell him it’s unlikely, but promise to give it my best shot. Then my phone buzzes with a belated response to the Craigslist post: “I saw your CL ad and I really appreciate what you’re doing… could you treat me to a meal this evening? Nothing big…I’m just a young guy trying to get by until my next payday.” Gabe and I settle on Chipotle. He’s thin, bespectacled, in his late 20s. Over burritos, he reveals that he walked the 5 miles from his apartment to save on subway fare. He likely burned more calories than his meal provides, so I get the feeling he’s searching for more than dinner. He asks about the sorts of things I’ve been doing, and I mention my encounters with Myra, Jonathan, Tyler, and Sarah. He appears a little embarrassed that his degree of need doesn’t measure up, but it’s not the effect I intended. We all have our struggles; there’s no shame in that. My hope is that offering a bit of kindness will not only lift people’s spirits, but also increase their awareness of an opportunity to help someone else. It’s common for therapists to recommend that depressed patients volun-

teer for charity projects. Temporarily inhabiting the lives of others in need helps to relieve our own suffering. Gabe is a filmmaker. “It’s what I want to do with my life,” he says. “I take odd freelance jobs from time to time to help, but I’m barely getting by.” He pauses. “I’m at this point where I’m thinking, Should I be doing this anymore?” I tell him I’m a writer and that, until my late 20s, I endured many stretches when I was ready to trade in my aspirations. I confess that sometimes I still do. By the end of dinner, he professes to feel better and eagerly describes a film he hopes to shoot, called It’s Raining on Prom Night. He declines train fare home and asks instead for a Gatorade to drink during the 90-minute walk. “It gives me time to think,” he says. I’ve done some thinking of my own. In the weeks since this assignment began, I’ve become a happier, kinder, more compassionate person, and that feeling has created a virtuous cycle. When asked for a spare dollar, I find myself giving more, more often. The other day I helped a woman carry a stroller up the stairs. Not a remarkable act, and something I likely would have done before, but my amped-up consciousness enabled me to see the opportunity. Heroism, I’ve learned, is a state of mind. Rise Lantern Festival

The recently opened Network Operations Control center is Southwest’s new operational hub. ALL TOGETHER

The new facility houses an array of groups in a central location.

Did you know there are Southwest Airlines Employees in Dallas who are dedicated to each and every part of your flight, from determining what Crew will serve you to what route your plane will take? These Employees are at the very heart of our complex network, in a brand new, state-of-the-art facility called the Network Operations Control. The Network Operations Control, better known as the NOC, opened its doors in early May, and it houses the Employees of our Network Operations Control Department, who have a stake in all aspects of launching 3,500-plus departures every day. Having all of these voices in one room provides visibility to just about everything that happens in the operation on a daily basis. With the hundreds of decisions we make every day, having stronger coordination among all of the groups that make up the Department—including Meteorology, Flight Dispatch, Customer Service Coordinators, and Crew Scheduling, among others—helps us make the best possible choices for our Customers. Since the Team stationed at the NOC is responsible for overseeing our flight operations and

Customers’ experience, it must be able to function 24/7. The building was constructed to withstand a category F-3 tornado and includes fireproof doors that can be engaged in the event of an emergency. And every aspect of the facility was carefully designed so that our Employees can manage their high-stress jobs with ease. For instance, the blue lighting inside is proven to reduce stress and ease eyestrain, and the undulating ceiling is intended to reduce noise levels. In short, the NOC’s aesthetics aren’t just for show. Every element was intentionally designed with our Employees, our operation, and you, our Customers, in mind. When you look out on the NOC floor, it’s amazing to see how far we have come from the one Dispatch desk we had when Southwest first took to the skies in 1971. Cal-BRAIN*, a critical research initiative California Governor Jerry Brown signed into law in the June budget, will be led by UC San Diego and will help revolutionize understanding of the brain and the diagnosis and treatment of brain disorders. Interdisciplinary brain research at UC San Diego is playing a significant role in the federal BRAIN Initiative announced by President Barack Obama in 2013. Neuroscientist Ralph Greenspan, director of UC San Diego’s Center for Brain Activity Mapping, was a key author of the initial federal and state proposals.
