Family, Hospitality, and Giving Thanks proud that Southwest has never had a single involuntary furlough in our 44-year history, and it’s remarkable to think that seven out of 10 Employees consider their work at Southwest not just a job but a calling. Furthermore, I know that if our Employees are happy, engaged, and inspired, they will take great care of our Customers.

Our Employees are famous for offering their own special brand of world-class Customer Service, which we refer to as “Hospitality.” That simply means treating fellow Employees like Family and our Customers like guests in our home. It may be as small as a

Pilot showing a child the flight deck or as big as a Flight Attendant helping a Customer during a medical emergency. Every interaction we have with Customers is an opportunity to connect with them in a way that makes their day, their trip, and, hopefully, their lives a little better. This ties in directly to our Purpose: to connect People to what’s important in their lives through friendly, reliable, and low-cost air travel. These important moments build relationships. Sure, we’re an airline, but it’s the human connections that we make in your journey that mean the most to us.

The relationship between Employees and Customers is also highlighted by my favorite Southwest Airlines tradition. I don’t sign our Employees’ pay stubs; instead, they are signed “Our Southwest Customers.” This symbolic gesture is a perfect reminder that without you, there is no us. So on behalf of the entire Southwest Family, I’d like to thank you—the ones who sign our paychecks and make it all possible—for offering us an opportunity to welcome you into our home.

Dear Southwest,

My family and I were traveling from Buffalo, New York, to catch a cruise out of Houston. Due to a snowstorm, our flight was canceled. This is when I met customer service agent Darlene Taylor. She found an alternative, but after speaking with the cruise line we realized that we would miss the boat. We found another option, but it was boarding soon, and all our bags were on the other flight. Darlene put on her coat, went out the back door into the snow, and proceeded to look for our bags. She found them, got them off the plane, and dragged them over to the other plane. I’m in total shock that a customer service agent would do that, especially in that type of weather. I actually had to hold back the tears as I was thanking her. This is the most amazing service I have ever received. —Nicole Scaccia

My son was flying by himself. To make things easier, we stuffed some items in his carry-on bag. I sat watching the plane, waiting for it to take off. As it started to back up from the gate, I realized: I’d left my car keys in his carry-on bag. I ran over to the desk and said to the ladies, “Please stop the plane, I need my keys!” Without hesitation, they did everything they could to stop the plane. I thought for sure they would have said it’s too late.

I would really love to give a special thank-you to customer service agents Jacquelyn Midence and Tania Bayron, operations agent Albert Perez, and ramp agent Pablo Garcia, who went to the plane, waited for my keys, and brought them back. These employees went above and beyond for me with such concern as if it were their own keys. I will never forget it.

My father’s funeral Mass was May 15, and my friend Rose and I had reservations to fly home afterward on May 19. My dad was respectfully served with full military honors, and we were given the U.S. flag during the ceremony. After the aircraft door was closed, the captain announced over the PA system that he was dedicating the flight to San Jose to Jim Sahli, a WWII veteran, and that members of Jim’s family were aboard. He then played “Stars and Stripes Forever” from the flight deck. We are deeply grateful for this touching recognition of my dad.

After a frantic first-flighton-Sunday crowd got onto a plane bound for Phoenix, all who were left at the gate were those of us who had boarded unaccompanied minors. did. He patted this man on the back and asked whether it was his first time doing this. When the man said it was, Pat sat with him and explained exactly what was going to happen— the path the plane would take and the way the engines would slow down over Newport. Then he told the young man how his boy would be treated on board and what would happen at the other end so he would be safe. He gave the young man some kindness at a moment when it was clearly needed. It was such a private, tender moment, but I felt so much richer to have witnessed it.

After being diverted from Kansas City to Dallas due to weather, we finally arrived and awaited our final stop in Houston. Our flight didn’t leave the airport until after 1:15 a.m. and arrived around 2 a.m. One of our flight attendants, Amy Lane, was on both flights and noticed we were traveling with two young children who were very tired. We struck up a conversation while waiting for our flight to take off, and she offered to take us to our hotel. It was the nicest, most thoughtful act we have ever received flying, and it solidified our love for flying Southwest. Southwest Airlines is lucky to have someone like Amy working for them. As my son Nolan, who was traveling as an unaccompanied minor, was being escorted by flight attendant Susan Lytle to the airplane, she asked him, “Who were you saying goodbye to?” My son replied, “That’s my best buddy Jaxson. Teresa Poulin Teresa Poulin doesn’t believe in using the snooze button. At 2:30 in the morning, when even the earliest of early birds are still asleep, she’s waking up and preparing for her day.

As a Customer Service Supervisor, one of Teresa’s goals is to do all she can to help the first Southwest Airlines flights of the day depart as scheduled. Getting the day off to a good start means Customers on later flights have a greater chance of being on time as well.

An Employee for 15 years, Teresa thrives on finding solutions for Customers and Employees alike, especially amid the hustle and bustle of the morning. During challenging situations such as inclement weather, she is either behind the scenes finding alternate routes for Customers or in the thick of the action beside the Customer Service Agents she serves.

When not helping Customers, Teresa aims to set up her Agents for success, working to ensure they have all they need to do their best. It’s a Team environment, and flexibility is the name of the game. “I love that we have the ability to make decisions,” she says.

Earth, wind, fire, and water can help you pick your perfect vacation.

I love winter best. It lets me do things with water that are unwise the rest of the year: ski down mountains, skate on top of lakes, explore wilderness on thin boards. This preference makes me a water person. But I also enjoy travel and feeling the wind in my face; these experiences are all about air.

On the other hand, you won’t find much fire or earth in me.

Students of history may recognize that I named the four basic elements: earth, air, fire, and water. Up until the 19th century, doctors believed that these four elements, or “humors,” were balanced in a healthy person. Too much fire caused fevers and irritability. The cure? Leeches and bleeding. More unpleasant treatments got prescribed for other unbalanced humors.

While medical science has mercifully moved beyond humoristic theory, I believe the four elements can help us choose vacations. Air people love to fly, preferring trips with a varied itinerary. People with fire in their bellies want a challenge, such as a snowshoe marathon or ice climbing or learning to surf with a stand-up paddleboard.

My wife, Dorothy, is mostly earth. She loves to garden and can’t resist a dark, deep cave. She sets down roots wherever she goes and makes herself comfortable. Not that she’s all earth. A great swimmer, she has water in her veins.

Most of us tend to have a mix, in fact. Email letters@southwestmag.com to tell me yours and what vacations your humors inspire. (Or to just let me know I’m crazy.) Then again, try balancing your humors in your free time. Personally, I try to soak up fire on a hot beach every winter. Fiery people might try hitting the slopes. Earth people: How about a cruise?

And, everybody: This winter, regardless of your humors, let’s take to the air.

Alon Shaya had a problem. The menu at his New Orleans–based Italian restaurant, Domenica, was skewing more and more toward his native Israeli, elbowing out other dishes. Earlier this year, the James Beard winner leaned into his culinary predicament, opening Shaya in New Orleans. The menu is dotted with not only staples like tabbouleh and hummus but inspired takes on Balkan, North African, and Eastern European dishes as well. Lutenitsa, a Bulgarian puree of roasted peppers and eggplant, provides a luscious complement to the wood-fired pita bread, while matzo ball soup is elegantly elevated with slow-cooked duck.

Both creatively speaking and in life, I’ve been thinking a lot about the difference between movement and action. For example, when something happens that we feel is unjust, we share it on social media—that, to me, is movement. It’s a transference of one thing to another. Action is different. That takes things a step further. There’s an urgency. There’s an intention. The difference is slight but really fundamental. It’s important to think about that difference in your life, and to think about whether you’re motivating yourself and others toward meaningful action. That’s my best advice.

RECIPE FOR SUCCESS It’s putting in the time. It’s deliberation, determination, innovation, and endurance. Sure, there are flashes of inspiration or the seed of an idea, but my creative process is mostly about the acts of construction and reconstruction.

Here’s how co-founder and CEO Tom Leung describes the career-growth platform: The idea for Anthology came from difficulties my colleagues and I faced while running another startup—how to recruit great talent and, conversely, avoid being spammed by recruiters ourselves.

The service acts as a trusted third party, with both job seekers and employers providing us very sensitive requirements in confidence. For example, individuals can

stipulate title, salary, and benefits, whereas employers might request candidates with specific experience or from a particular school. This information, visible only to the Anthology team, is used by our algorithms to identify potential matches.

Where were you at in your life when you decided to join IJL?

grEg:

I’d been divorced for about two years, and it was a hectic time career wise. My company was in a transitional phase, and it demanded a lot of my time and effort, so I didn’t have time for much else.

JENNIE: I’d also been divorced about two years. Being a single mom and working full-time, it wasn’t a huge priority of mine to go out and do the legwork it took to meet someone; it felt like having another job, and I didn’t have time for that.

Favorite first date memories?

grEg: I was attracted to her right away. On the second date there was a real chemistry. Then it evolved very, very quickly.

JENNIE:

When Greg and I started talking, I discovered we had similar careers. I remember the conversation was so easy and comfortable. When I shared my date feedback with my IJL matchmaker, I let her know that Greg and I had made arrangements to attend a big award dinner at his country club.

The minute I walked in, I knew he was a consummate gentleman. I felt so cared for. He was attentive and made sure I was introduced to everyone.

How did IJL compare to your online dating experience?

grEg: Online dating isn’t easy, it’s work. I’ve got a full-time career; I didn’t need another job. With IJL they did everything for me. You’re busy with your career and everything else going on – IJL was just easier.

The caliber of matches was much higher.

JENNIE: I saw an ad for IJL on a flight and was contemplating whether I was interested when someone close to me mentioned it as an option. I thought

I’d try it because it sounded like having friends who could interview people for you so when you went on a date you would know there’s something about the two of you that someone thought would be a good fit.

What sort of activities did you enjoy while you were dating?

JENNIE: We love to be outside. I also love going to places I’ve never been before. He loves to drive and take me places – whether that’s going to the beach or going to the mountains or some random lake that’s hidden away.

How has your life changed since you met?

grEg: It is totally different than it was.

I would say that there was a point in time when I felt a little bit lost.

Everything has completely turned around. Every day I wake up, and I enjoy the day. I enjoy being around her, the kids, and our home. Life is just better.

E COULDN’T HAVE BEEN more than 11 years old, hopping around the streets of Boise, Idaho, well past what I imagine was his usual bedtime. With dark brown hair and a sweaty gray T-shirt, he clutched a pile of song lyrics as middle-aged men swayed high above him, accordions fanning and flutes piping.

As the crowd swelled and the moon rose, the boy grew happier and happier, reveling in a way that only children awake past their bedtimes can.

Whatever exhaustion was within him was overpowered by the pure joy of I’m getting away with something tonight.

The music climbed, and the boy burst into song. The lyrics went something like this: I have absolutely no idea what they were, honestly. Something about love, maybe? Regret? Probably both?

The song was in Basque, one of the world’s best-known isolated languages. For centuries, the Basque people lived in relative solitude in northern Spain and southwestern France. Their culture thrived, nearly unfettered, until revolution and war chipped that away in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Now, 200 years later, one of the world’s largest Basque celebrations is hosted in, of all places, Boise. Jaialdi is not particularly odd—it’s a mixture of county fair with a touch of Greek Orthodox carnival—but its draw is. Her single-minded quest to get there became her greatest adventure.

Each of the pinkie-size creatures has a tangle of flowing tentacles and a pair of googly eyeballs. The squid are fleeing from a lurking predator, likely a hammerhead shark, and seeing their ghostly forms vanish is like watching an IMAX movie from inside a gliding bubble. (Except, of course, this is the real thing.)

After the last squid disappears into the abyss, the pilot, 28-year old Diana Garcia Benito, drops the sub toward a seamount, or underwater mountain, aiming to reach a depth of 1,000 feet. “Copy, copy,” she says into her headset. “We’re going down.”

She’s probing the underwater sanctuary surrounding Cocos Island, a far-flung national park and UNESCO World Heritage site that inspired Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island. Off its verdant shores, hammerheads gather by the hundreds—more reside here than anywhere else in the world. The sharks’ food source is constantly replenished as cold, nutrient-rich waters collide with a volcanic mountain range beneath the sea.

As the vessel approaches a nearby rock, Diana illuminates various guests with the sub’s light.

renowned for being half-eel, halffish? This, Diana explains, is the jellynose. Over there are the pink anthias, their bony heads buried in the sand, presumably thinking nobody can see them (not the cleverest of ocean dwellers).

A luminous blue creature that resembles a pulsating plastic bag drifts by and turns out to be a group of conjoined animals: a siphonophorae. “Each of the individuals has its own job,” Diana says. “One is for mating, one is for motion, one is for eating. They are all different parts of a body.”

The creatures down here seem eerie and otherworldly to most people, but to Diana, they don’t just belong—they’re begging to be understood.

SIXTEEN YEARS BEFORE she became an undersea pilot, Diana was a 10-year-old girl digging mud pits in the mountains an hour south of Caracas, Venezuela. Her parents, Alvaro Garcia and Pili Benito, raised their three daughters in a secluded tropical forest with no electricity. Alvaro, an anthropologist, had constructed their home, “La Finca” (the farm), from mud, concrete, wood, and tile. Pili, a chef from Spain, prepared most of the family’s meals with fruits and vegetables from the family garden. They also kept birds, cats, dogs, and honeybees.

Growing up, Diana spent many days with her father maintaining La Finca, learning to repair doors, toilets, cars—anything that broke. After her siblings went away to school, she had no trouble entertaining herself. When she wasn’t leading solo expeditions in the jungle or playing MacGyver, she sought out new reading material, devouring books throughout the day: Aquaman comics, anything by Jules Verne, and a towering stack of National Geographic magazines—her “yellow library.”

her from Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, Diana’s first exposure to the exiled submarine captain Nemo and his seafaring adventures.

While her father read, Diana could hear the pitter-patter of gecko feet as they scampered across the roof, chasing some bug or spider. It was a sound she would never forget.

On special occasions she visited her grandmother’s house in Caracas to watch movies. The Little Mermaid was her favorite, though she couldn’t understand how Ariel could possibly want to live on land—all Diana wanted was to be a mermaid living in the sea. That was why she dug the mud pits. In her landlocked corner of Venezuela, swimming in sludge was the closest she could get.

Her fortunes changed when she turned 12 and accompanied Alvaro up the Orinoco River to stay with the indigenous Warao tribe as part of his fieldwork. They traveled for five days in dugout canoes on the outskirts of the Amazon. Diana cooed at playful pink dolphins and learned the pack-feeding habits of voracious piranhas lurking beneath the surface. During her time with the tribe, a fishing people who lived on stilted homes above a delta, she often went swimming. “In the water, I fell immediately in love,” she says.

“Completely free, calm, amazed, disconnected from everything. I wanted to live underwater forever.”

Hundreds of miles away, tensions were building in Caracas. After a failed coup attempt on the regime of Hugo Chávez, the streets were clogged with strikes and protests in which 19 people were killed. When Chávez returned to power two days later, he expropriated unoccupied residences and announced he was giving them to the poor. One of those residences was a second home Diana’s father had painstakingly constructed in the jungle over the course of nearly a decade. The instability caused Alvaro to fear for his family’s safety. They fled to Spain without savings or work permits.

AS THE WATER LEVEL rises against the four inches of acrylic encasing the sub, Cocos Island fades from view. An orb of sunlight gleams and then dims at the surface, and the water turns from turquoise to azure to midnight blue. Diana reports the temperature, depth, cabin pressure, carbon dioxide level, and humidity. “All good,” she says, releasing more air from the buoyancy control device to take the sub farther down. This vessel—the “DeepSee” sub—is a $3 million, 17-ton submersible with a clamshell design offering 360-degree overhead views.

Built to carry a pilot and two passengers to the final frontier of earthbound exploration, it’s also equipped with a high-definition camera and a sample-grabbing arm for scientific research.

At around 300 feet, Diana points out a finned silhouette working its way across the viewing window. Here, hammerheads behave more aggressively than in shallower waters. “They are actually here to hunt,” she says. On cue, the sleek body of the shark thrashes and picks up speed in pursuit of a squid, darting in one direction and then another. 850 feet, the water is completely dark except for the glow of the sub’s light. Diana navigates down the steep slope of an extinct volcano made of basalt rock, dubbed “The Wall.” Moray eels peer out with mouths agape and dip back behind rocks like haunted-house employees. In the distance, manta rays the size of kitchen tables and more hammerhead sharks on the hunt glide by.

These waters are protected from fishing for 12 nautical miles surrounding the island, allowing plankton and other sea critters to thrive, and this in turn compels mammoth pelagic creatures like whale sharks and humpbacks to journey thousands of miles to the feast. Hammerheads are also drawn to the cleaning stations, deep-water areas where small fish cling to the sharks to nibble at their dead skin and parasites.

As a result, Cocos National Park contains the largest biomass of predators of any Pacific tropical marine ecosystem.

While the huge schools of gleaming sharks and swirling jack fish have made the island one of the world’s top diving attractions, the mystique is not limited to its undersea environs. When heavy rains come, dozens of waterfalls surge and the island appears to cry. This source of fresh water— the only one for hundreds of miles—made Cocos Island a refuge for whalers and gold-toting pirates in the 1600s. According to legend, treasure is hidden within the dramatic cliffs and yawning caves, though numerous expeditions have failed to unearth anything.

The more attainable prize at Cocos is viewing undersea life, though at times that too can prove elusive. An ocean current is sweeping through, slowly pulling the sub away from The Wall and toward the abyss. Diana works the thrusters and studies her navigation systems, trying to maintain the sub’s position. If the

sub is dragged too far, the rest of the dive will have to be aborted.

DIANA ARRIVED ALONE in Spain in January of 1996, the country’s coldest winter in a decade. Her parents sent her to live with an uncle until they made arrangements for their own move, eventually settling in an apartment near downtown Burgos.

It was small and quiet, and strangely devoid of ants, Diana remembers.

She had always been a gifted student—she won several national academic prizes in Venezuela—but the education system in Spain was much more challenging. She enrolled in extra classes and stayed after school, earning a scholarship to the University of Cadiz, renowned for its marine science program. It was the only way she could afford to attend.

She double-majored in marine science and environmental sciences, volunteered with the Spanish Institute of Oceanography, and won a yearlong scholarship to study marine

a living as a waitress, dog walker, and house cleaner. She eventually moved in with her sister in England.

In what seemed like a lucky break, she landed a scuba diving internship in the Dominican Republic, but upon arrival she discovered that the dive shop allowed tourists to take shells and touch the sea life—practices that caused environmental damage.

“There was nothing there to see anymore,” she says. “Not even one shark.”

Still determined to pursue her dream, she quit and flew to Costa Rica, where a friend from Spain was living. She arrived with $100 in savings. She found a temporary job teaching science and eventually heard about a job opening for a submersible pilot with Undersea Hunter, a company that runs dive trips to Cocos Island. It was her shot at becoming a real-life Captain Nemo.

When she applied, the curt response was the most disappointing setback yet. “Thanks for your interest,” the company wrote. “But we don’t work with women.”

Two decades earlier, Cindy Van Dover faced similar obstacles in trying to become one of the world’s first female submersible pilots. An accomplished oceanographer and biologist, she persisted for years before the all-male Alvin team would give her a chance.

(The Alvin sub, operated by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, was famously used to explore the Titanic wreckage in 1986.) Van Dover made countless dives, helped maintain the equipment, and literally wrote the manual on how to repair the sub. In 1989 she finally got the chance to earn her pilot’s license.

Today, submersible pilots are still overwhelmingly male, but women are beginning to break through. The Chinese government is training two female pilots, as is the sub manufacturing company Triton Submarines LLC, in Vero Beach, Florida.

Her family settled in an apartment near downtown Burgos.

At Undersea Hunter, women had previously held jobs as dive masters, but they never lasted. The trips required being at sea for 10 days at a time, so the company felt that hiring another woman was risky. A month after getting the rejection letter, Diana scored an invite to the departing pilot’s going-away party thanks to a friend of a friend. There, she struck up a conversation with Shmulik Blum, the sub program’s director.

They chatted about life at sea, and Diana told Blum how much she wanted the job. Blum was impressed with her resolve and promised to speak with his boss, Avi Klapfer.

Klapfer had doubts. How did she expect to do this job with no engineering background? Would she be able to live at sea for weeks on end? Diana explained how her dad had taught her to fix cars on La Finca, and how she had lived with the Warao tribe for nearly a month when she was 12.

“The Warao tribe?” Klapfer asked. He knew of the tribe and had canoed up that same river. He was stunned that Diana had spent time in such a remote place as a child. He gave her a training manual.

Diana studied on the bus, during breaks at the school, and in bed late at night, memorizing the entire thing. She reread Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, marveling at how her life could soon resemble it. To build strength, she exercised maniacally. Worried friends asked Diana what she would do if she didn’t get the job. “I’ll figure that out afterwards,” she told them.

She performed well at the weeklong tryout, and when the phone call from Blum came, she nearly fell out of a hammock. She was hired. “This is the job of my life,” she said.

WITH THE SUB hovering at 500 feet, some sunlight still penetrates.

Diana turns out the lights, and creatures start to emerge. Slowly, fish drift in from the darkness and pass over the top of the sub. Their numbers steadily grow—first dozens, then hundreds, then a thousand,

shining like dark, wriggling stars in an emerald-green firmament. “You see,” Diana says. “There is so much life here.”

Diana flips the lights back on. “I know a rock where we can find a little moray eel,” she says. This particular eel is an unknown species, still unnamed. “Let’s see if she’s around.”

The eel peeks out from a crevice and begins to hunt by the sub’s light, revealing the tiny cream-colored spots on its thin ribbon of a body.

“This is the only specimen we have seen here,” Diana says. “The specialists in the U.S. are crazy about getting a sample, but I said, ‘I’m sorry.

I love science, but I cannot do this.’

She’s the only one.”

In fact, many of the creatures Diana encounters at this depth are still unknown. She could someday be the one to remedy that: She’s currently working on a classification of all the deep-water fish near the island, and she recently contributed to her first scientific paper, on the discovery of a new species of frogfish off Mexico’s Socorro Island.

She’s begun working toward a Ph.D. At the end of the dive, as Diana guides the sub back to the surface, a shower of small, writhing crabs rains over it. They look like miniature helicopters, spinning downward like some kind of adorable plague. These crabs turn out to be a harbinger.

Two days later, millions of large, pelagic crabs drift to Cocos Island and surround the Undersea Hunter ship. It’s a red species nobody recognizes—members of the crew who have been coming to the island for 25 years have never seen anything like it. Along with the dive masters, Diana rushes for her mask and fins and leaps headfirst into the water.

She swims toward the enigmatic crustaceans, laughing and screaming through her snorkel, gliding through the water like a mermaid.

He was diagnosed with bone-on-bone osteoarthritis of the left knee, causing much pain and discomfort; at that point he was told only a total knee replacement could help him. He is otherwise healthy. incorporates Basque dishes into its typically uneventful continental breakfast. It’s there at the Hampton Inn, with the chorizo wedged next to the waffles and oatmeal, that it pops into focus: Why Idaho?

In the 1880s, as railroads grew and connected parts of the U.S. known to most citizens as “out there past St. Louis,” Basque immigrants made their way to the West Coast. (The discovery of gold and silver—and the adjacent industries of ranching and herding—led to the wave.) The six-day journey from New York was tiring, so those who’d already made the trip set up boarding houses in places like Ogden, Utah; Winnemucca, Nevada; and, eventually, Boise. Basques were welcomed with familiar food and, most importantly, a familiar tongue. (Their native language made communication for the new residents near impossible.)

Eventually, Boise’s Basque population multiplied—the city now has the highest concentration in the U.S.—carving out an entire neighborhood, known affectionately as the Basque Block. Every five years, that block becomes the center of the Basque world.

LAST OCTOBER, I sat at a long table in the hills outside Bilbao, Spain, noshing on tuna and cured meats and the richest pâté I’ve ever ingested, with Jon, a Basque friend I had met while on a fellowship in the region. As the drinks flowed and the stars fattened and winked outside, he explained a festival far away from Spain. A festival in Idaho, where Basque culture is the only thing on the itinerary. But why? I wondered.

When you can get better food and wine and dancing in Spain, why hop on three connecting flights and travel 5,000 miles?

“We couldn’t do this in Spain,” he tells me when we reunite in Boise this past July, referring to

the group’s—hmm, let’s say— say—precarious political situation. “Here, there are no politics. We are just Basque.”

Here there are no politics. The opposite is true in Spain, where being Basque is politics. It’s the politics of being a minority in one’s own homeland. It’s the politics of the Basque independence movement, and of the violence that came with it. It’s the politics of state-mandated language suppression. And while there are no politics here, there is a lot of wine.

Jon and I started the week right, with kalimotxo, a blend of cheap red wine and Coca-Cola. I, in turn, purchased him a shot of Jack Daniels, solidifying my role as cultural ambassador.

At the insistence of the Jaialdi website, I ditched Jon and headed to what was referred to simply as “Sports Night.” The contestants entered via a Chicago Bulls-esque lights show, sauntering out of the tunnel to growling applause, representing the towns of Zizurkil or Gernika or, yes, Boise. The announcers chirped in English and Basque, and soon there were men lifting wagons and spinning them in circles until they were too dizzy or too tired to continue. There were men carrying milk cans the size of propane tanks. There were men chopping and sawing, and, at one point, there was a man who lifted 500 pounds onto his right shoulder and then shot his left fist into the sky. I don’t know how to say “I can’t believe that just happened” in Basque, but in English, at least, it came out as a string of non-publishable exclamations.

The politics of the Basque country were literally thousands of miles away. For this moment, everyone was standing together cheering for a man with the weight of a small horse on his shoulder.

eavesdropping while a mother explained her family’s path to Boise to her children. In the morning, when the streets were quiet with the hush of hangovers, I would sit with my coffee and try to articulate why thousands would fly from all over the world to be there. Each morning, I would fail. My notes are rambling and disjointed. The meaning of chasing America with XX,000 Basques, reads one particularly lofty idea. Another tries to

relate the Basque culture to Panda Express. I was at a loss.

On the last day of the festival, I hopped a school bus out to the outskirts of town. I met up with Jon, who immediately told me that the fairgrounds were too hot and dusty for his parents and he was leaving. “But go see the dancing,” he said, his deep brown eyes staring into mine. “The dancing.”

After a medicinal stop at the kalimotxo tent, I made my way to

the exhibition hall and plopped down on the concrete floor, expecting little. Soon, the place filled with flashes of red and black, twirling legs with clinking bells, and the most precise snapping I’d ever witnessed. I was enraptured.

While I sat on the floor, a man stood over me, staring straight ahead. Heavyset, wearing a Boise State football shirt, he made his way down to the ground, where he sat directly on my hand. Just as I was about to yell, I looked at his face. He didn’t blink, staring straight ahead at the dancers. I pulled my hand out from under him and let him keep watching.

He didn’t look Basque, just another gawker like me, parachuting in for a week. I stared at him for an uncomfortable amount of time, imagining what it meant to be just another Boisean seeing this. As the routine concluded, he clapped with the force of a man moved and changed by what he saw. He crossed his legs, settling in for the next act.

Maybe that’s what I’d been chasing. I was looking for those aha moments, the that’s why they fly thousands of miles revelations.

Lost in the thicket of sausage and pelota and diabetes-inducing wine drinks was the overall wonder of it all. The wonder of a culture so at ease with itself, so open to exploration, yet so fiercely defensive of its traditions. The wonder of this roaming reunion, the one that’s more than happy to add a few branches onto the family tree for gawking strangers.

On that last night, as Jon and I wandered the streets of Boise, I spotted the young boy from earlier in the week. He still grinned widely, continued to elbow his way to the front of the crowd, and belted out the choruses of his ancestors.

He no longer needed the lyrics.

SIP: Ceol Irish Pub has great whiskey and beers on tap. I’m a big fan of whiskey, Redbreast in particular.

SEE: The University of Nevada, Reno has a phenomenal stadium to watch football. Reno gets really nice weather in the fall, so that’s something I recommend.

And for live music, you can’t beat the Knitting Factory.

DO: I love outdoor activities.

It’s one of the reasons I love this area so much. I like to waterski on Lake Tahoe (when the conditions are right) and mountain bike through the Galena Forest area. I really prefer biking during the week because there’s nobody on the trails. You can get away from it all, and I enjoy the solitude, which helps peace of mind.

To see some of the best images of the lake, take the Flume Trail in Glenbrook, one of the biggest risk/ reward activities around. Sure, you can see many great views hiking through the mountain trails, but you’ll only get to the best spots by bike. This challenging ride spans 14 miles one way, hovering between 7,000 and 8,000 feet in elevation.

Inexperienced riders will find the steep and rocky trail challenging, but the vistas that come from conquering Flume Trail are worth it. Shuttles run from Spooner Lake State Park and Tahoe Meadows for convenient parking.

For a nice reprieve from the action, head to Lake Emerald Bay State Park’s lovely campgrounds in South Lake Tahoe. The park, which became a National Natural Landmark in 1969, is known for its awe-inspiring panoramas and glacier-carved granite. Enjoy the campgrounds during warm weather months or simply get lost in the landscape any time of year.

Triumphing Over Tragedy

The Folds of Honor Foundation supports military families.

On June 6, 2006, Air Force Reserve Maj. Dan Rooney was flying home from Iraq when he witnessed an Army corporal escorting the body of his fallen twin brother, a fellow corporal.

Inspired by this example of sacrifice and familial commitment, Rooney created the Folds of Honor Foundation in 2007, which has provided more than 10,000 scholarships to spouses and children of America’s fallen and wounded soldiers.

Southwest Airlines proudly partners with Folds of Honor by donating travel to the foundation every year.

Behind each scholarship recipient is a devoted American who answered the call of duty. Here is one such story: Sarah White was just 6 years old when, on April 18, 1995, a routine Air Force training exercise turned disastrous and claimed the life of her father, Capt. Dennis White. Southwest Pilot and Air Force Capt. Brian Udell was the surviving pilot that fateful day. “There is not a day in the last 20 years that I have not thought about Dennis and his family,” he says. “I have always

hoped and prayed that his wife, Gretchen, and his two children, Sarah and Brian, would be OK. Thanks in part to Folds of Honor, they are.”

Sarah learned about Folds of Honor after enrolling at Auburn University. Needing a way to pay tuition in her sophomore year, she discovered the organization after searching online for educational financial assistance for military families. In 2011, Sarah became the first Folds scholarship recipient to graduate from college.

She joined the foundation as an official ambassador, marching forth to ensure no family like hers is left behind, and she is now an avid spokesperson who shares with audiences across the country how the support of Folds of Honor has allowed her to carry on her father’s legacy.

Sarah no longer sees Folds of Honor as just a mission—it has become a family. And since she serves as a liaison to Southwest Airlines, it’s our honor to call her part of our family too.

Connecting to an International Flight • Go directly to the Southwest departure gate.

• Checked bags will be transferred automatically.

• You should not have to leave the secure part of the airport.

Connecting from an International Flight • Depending on point of departure, Customers may have to clear U.S. Immigration before collecting checked baggage from the baggage carousel.

• You will then proceed through customs to clear checked and carryon baggage.

• Customers traveling from some countries go through the customs process before returning to the United States.

• If you have checked baggage, proceed to the Southwest recheck desk or ticket counter to check your bags for the final portion of your trip.

• Customers traveling internationally into the United States with a connecting flight may carry liquids in carryon baggage, provided they were purchased in duty-free shops and placed in secure, tamper-evident bags.

• Proceed to your departure gate. If you do not have a boarding pass for your connecting flight, you must obtain one at the ticket counter or at kiosks near the Southwest recheck desk before proceeding to your gate.

About a decade ago, I discovered a woman named Lee Miller, who was an American photographer and one of the first female war correspondents during World War II. She seemed to have lived several lives in one. First a soughtafter fashion model in New York City and then Man Ray’s student and muse in Paris, eventually she became an accomplished fashion and fineart photographer in her own right, covering the liberation of Paris and the concentration camps of Dachau and Buchenwald for Vogue. Some of her most striking images are from Hitler’s abandoned Munich apartment. I’m fascinated by people who assume multiple identities over the course of their lives because that’s kind of what I do, albeit in a fictitious sense. I think of her when I can’t get out of bed.
