For engineer turned explorer Albert Lin, it’s

Big data for a bigger purpose Albert Yu-Min Lin came to the University of California, San Diego to study engineering because he wanted to do “something hard.” Little did he know that would lead him to something much more difficult—trying to solve a centuries-old mystery. He swapped the title “engineer” for “explorer” by scouring the remote reaches of Mongolia for Genghis Khan’s lost tomb. Using data from groundpenetrating radar, remote sensors and satellite imagery, he searched underground without disturbing the natural environment or indigenous culture. “It’s not technology for technology’s sake,” Albert says. “It’s about putting data together to ask the right questions.” Now an entreprenuer and a researcher at UC San Diego, he obliterates traditional scientific boundaries to probe how we use technology to answer those questions. He mobilizes a legion of citizen scientists to sift through mountains of data, and bring meaning to them. From chaos, he creates connections. UC San Diego attracts and cultivates such risk-takers and innovators—explorers of our universe, our world and our humanity. Learn more at ucsd.edu.

Gary’s Greeting

What makes a championship Team? Is it talent, coaching, resources, or weak competition? Or is it something else? Southwest Airlines has an unrivaled tradition of excellence—not only in the commercial aviation industry, but in all of corporate America. We have been profitable for 43 consecutive years, have never had an involuntary furlough or pay cut, and have been on Fortune’s list of the World’s Most Admired Companies for 22 straight years, ranking seventh in 2016. So what’s the secret behind the success? Easy: our People.

One of my mentors, Southwest Founder and Chairman Emeritus Herb Kelleher, is famous for saying, “The business of business is People.” I couldn’t agree more. Southwest is a great Team because of our Culture, which comprises our People and how we think, behave, work, and act toward each other. It’s not a mandate or a set of policies, and it’s not spelled out in an Employee handbook. To me, what makes the Southwest Culture truly special is how we relate to each other in a respectful way. We embrace new People when they join the

Southwest Family, we embrace diversity and celebrate our differences, and we work hard to serve others. When I think about the Leaders who have made the biggest impact on me, it’s the ones who demonstrated that they genuinely cared about me—not by their words, but by their actions. Southwest cares for our People in a plethora of ways. We celebrate important moments with each other, and we gather as a Family several times a year just to spend time together. We personally reach out to any Employee going through a major life moment— good or bad—and let them know that the Company is there for them. Sometimes that’s as simple as a phone call or a handwritten card. In other cases, we provide financial assistance to rebuild a home after a natural disaster or help pay for a major medical procedure and recovery. The care we show each other comes in all forms and fashions, in ways both big and small. Don’t get me wrong—we are a business, and we must be experts at what we do and demand excellent results. That is also part of our Culture. Nobody wants to play for a losing Team. We all want to win. But how we win is equally important. At Southwest, we win with our People, who have built a Culture of compassion, caring, and Hospitality. May it always be so!

PHOTOGRAPHY BY STEPHEN KELLER

“Southwest Airlines empowers me to be an advocate for my Customers.” —CASSANDRA GESS, CUSTOMER SERVICE SUPERVISOR

If you’ve heard singing and laughing through the Nashville airport’s gate speakers, there’s a good chance you’ve been around Customer Service Supervisor Cassandra Gess. Working at an airport can be stressful, but the ups and downs don’t keep Cassandra from her favorite hobby—laughter. Whether she’s cracking jokes with Customers, Coworkers, or fellow Nashvillians at an open mic night, Cassandra says as long as she’s laughing, she’s good. She shows her Warrior Spirit, Servant’s Heart, and Fun-LUVing Attitude wherever she goes, which is evident through her service at Ronald McDonald House and her participation on Southwest Culture Committees, both local and Companywide. Thank you for keeping a smile on our faces, Cassandra! —Amy Thornton, Communication & Outreach WEDDING BELLS “When we were asked to make an announcement in our Baggage Service Office for a newly engaged couple, we made signs and got flowers, champagne, and a photographer!”

RIPPLE EFFECT “If I’m doing right by my Customers, I’m also doing right by my Company, both of which are very important to me.” TAKE A HIKE “Within a few hours of Nashville, there are some beautiful trails, swimming holes, and waterfalls. Check out Fall Creek Falls, Radnor Lake, or Cumberland Caverns.”

“Meeting people and hearing their stories—those are always my favorite moments while flying.” —SARAH HARMEYER, FOUNDER, NEIGHBOR’S TABLE Throughout 2011, Sarah Harmeyer set out to serve 500 people at a farmhouse-style cedar table in her Dallas backyard. Her mission was simple: to celebrate the power of people gathering to share a meal and their stories. Sarah met her goal that year, and since then has served nearly 2,500 people at her original table. She’s now started a nationwide love mission called Neighbor’s Table, and with her father, she has delivered handmade “Neighbor’s Tables” to homes across the U.S. Sarah uses Rapid Rewards points to fly home after deliveries, and Southwest is happy to have played a role in her efforts. You Made Our Day WANT TO SHARE YOUR STORY? Have you witnessed an over-the-top act of Southwest Airlines Employee kindness? Let us know at Southwest.com/ contact-us.

I recently emailed Southwest Airlines asking to shadow some of their pilots. Within days, customer relations/Rapid Rewards senior representative Jeana Jacobsen had contacted station manager Brendan Korsgren in Portland and set up a date for me and my dad to interview several pilots before their flights. I was able to ask all kinds of career questions, including how they got to where they are now and how it was to fly for Southwest (they all said that they love it!). Brendan also

IT’S OUR HONOR

I want to give a shout out to one of your employees: customer service supervisor Mary Giacoma. Her assistance on all of the flights that Honor Flight Nevada has taken with our veterans over the past year makes the trips so much easier. She always has our boarding passes ready for us and helps load the transit chairs. She

Dear Southwest,

surprised my dad and me with standby tickets to Oakland, where we got to meet Capt. Ford Frazier. He gave us a tour around the office. Ford then passed us along to crew base coordinators Guiliana Gavilano and Kathy Lobrovich, who gave us an in-depth tour of the Southwest gates and luggage handling center. We also met ramp supervisor Carlos Jacome, who showed us the ground control center. He allowed me to sit with him in the pusher while they pushed the planes away from the gate! This experience showed me there’s much more to the industry than I had previously thought. When it was time to head back to the gate to board, we told Carlos how appreciative we were to have had his guidance. I am very thankful to everybody at Southwest who helped with this oncein-a-lifetime opportunity to shadow some of the people I hope to fly with one day! Thank you, Southwest Airlines, for your generosity and commitment to excellence! —Shawn Kellim, high school junior

I just want to thank all of the Southwest employees who go above and beyond every time our cognitively disabled daughter flies. The measure of a company is not how you handle business as usual, but what you do when things don’t go as planned. Our daughter flies frequently, thanks to the support and service Southwest Airlines offers, and she is most comfortable connecting via Hobby. She was pre-boarding recently when they announced a potential mechanical delay. As her connection in Hobby was only 35 minutes, she could have missed the flight to her final destination and been stranded in Houston. The ticketing agents looked at options to rebook, which weren’t favorable. They announced the flight would go, but it would leave late, which shrank our connection window. As I thought

F1_ymod_kt.indd 24

of all the things that could cause our daughter to miss her flight, Capt. John Presley, who was flying the jump seat in the cockpit to Houston, offered to get her to the connecting flight. I got three simple texts from him over the next few hours, but they spoke volumes about Southwest employees. Thank you! —Maureen Sherlock KLEENEX CARE

I was on a flight that started in Atlanta, stopped in Chicago, and had a final destination of Newark. When I arrived, I had received some bad news, so I was crying while on the phone in the baggage claim. Customer service agent Chante King approached me with a box of tissues and took me into her office. She was so polite and caring while calming me down. After she got my bag, I stayed in her office for a few minutes, and then went outside to wait for my sister to pick me up. Chante came outside to check on me again. She is an asset to the Southwest family, and she restored my faith in mankind. Her simple gesture of noticing others—and

taking the time to do something about it—went above and beyond. Thank you, Chante. —Mary Quinlan SANDWICH SUPPORT

I can’t thank flight attendant Will Arisman enough for the amazing service I received on a recent flight. After getting hung up in the security line, I no longer had time to get a sandwich or a bottle of water before boarding. I hadn’t eaten all day, and this trip wasn’t a vacation for me. My sister-in-law passed and I was heading to the funeral. Upon boarding, Will asked how I was doing, and I lamented that I hadn’t been able to get my sandwich or water—I said nothing about going to a funeral. He said he was sorry, and I said no worries and took a seat. They then announced the flight would be delayed, so I asked whether I could get off and get my sandwich. I wasn’t able to, but Will said, “I can!” I gave him $20, and he got my sandwich and water. Will told me my change was in the bag—my $20 was still there. Only on SWA would this have happened. —Gradi Rocamora

Dear Reader,

There’s something uncanny about visiting an island. Whether Aruba or Gilligan’s, each one has its own clearly bounded story. Whenever my wife and I travel to a new island, we like to read as much as we can. We always find a singular tale in its own world. Over the past couple months, we managed to visit two: a protected seashore with its own semitropical wilderness, and a city bearing a tale of heroic resilience. First, we celebrated our anniversary by spending a few nights on Cumberland Island, Georgia, near Jacksonville, Florida. Slightly longer than Manhattan, Cumberland offers a few campsites and just one hotel, the beautiful Greyfield Inn. We’re talking 18 miles of jungle, empty beach, and wild horses; and the inn itself grows its own food for gourmet meals. Before we left, Dorothy read a shelf-full of books, including Nevada Barr’s Cumberland-based mystery novel Endangered Species, and Charles Seabrook’s Cumberland Island: Strong Women, Wild Horses. I read up on the history of the Native Americans who grew crops and thrived there before Europeans arrived. The following month we traveled to Galveston, Texas, having read Erik Larson’s prizewinning Isaac’s Storm ahead of time. At the island’s visitor center, we caught an open-air electric shuttle for a tour of the East End Historical District, filled with gaudily painted houses that somehow survived the Great Galveston Hurricane of 1900 as well as 2008’s Hurricane Ike. We passed oak trees that had died in the last flood, only to be carved by artists into sculptures. Both islands grabbed us with a force all the greater for the advance reading. It was as if, having read a ripping good novel, we became minor characters in the stories, with strong women and wild horses and gingerbread houses, forever in print and for real.

I wanted to say how much I enjoyed reading “The Future the Way It Used to Be” [June 2016]. It’s not every day you see future space predictions in an airline magazine. I particularly enjoyed Jay Heinrichs’ predictions and his challenge to offer even better forecasts. Well, over the past year, I’ve helped to do just that by contributing research to and editing the new Integrated Space Plan. The ISP is a visual representation of major space infrastructure elements of the past, present, and future, and it shows a detailed timeline of humanity’s future in space for the next 100 years. I also want to reemphasize Robert Zubrin’s point about the importance of STEM education. The future won’t happen unless there are scientists and engineers to make it happen!

Here’s to the Harvest

Stop in to celebrate Chuy’s 28th Annual Green Chile Festival, August 15—September 4

It was the 1980s when Chuy’s founders Mike Young and John Zapp first encountered the pepper that inspired a movement. On a whim, they ventured into New Mexico’s Hatch Valley, where the arid climate and rich soil produce the finest green chiles on the planet. They happened to arrive just in time for the annual harvest, when street vendors cook the

newly picked chiles in cage roasters and serve them up fresh. That was something Mike and John could appreciate. Ever since opening the first Chuy’s in Austin, Texas, in 1982, they have placed a premium on using the freshest ingredients, crafting everything from scratch in small batches. They knew they’d discovered the perfect complement to their dishes (and tequila!), so they cultivated relationships with fourth-generation chile farmers and began making annual harvest pilgrimages to ensure they were getting the very best. “This truly is farm-to-table,” Mike says.

But they didn’t stop there. They wanted to share the euphoria of that first harvest experience with their customers, and the Chuy’s Green Chile Festival was born. For three weeks beginning each August, burlap sacks packed with fresh chiles arrive daily at Chuy’s around the country. They’re roasted and used in recipes you can’t experience any other time of year. Head to Chuy’s and get ’em while they’re hot!

PHOTOGRAPHY BY ADAM VOORHES/GALLERY STOCK

Ring true for you? Mobile security company Lookout and the Ponemon Institute surveyed 720 people and found that they were more concerned about MIA mobiles than misplaced plastic— for good reason. “Your cellphone has become, for all intents and purposes, an access token,” says Mike Murray, Lookout’s vice president of security research and response. “If I have your cellphone, not only do I get the data

that’s on it, I also have the key that you use to access the rest of your accounts.” If your device is gone for good, Murray suggests resetting passwords and, in the case of wayward work phones, immediately alerting your company. For your sake, we hope it’s just a close call.

FOWL PLAY Forget what’s in your purse. The survey also revealed that we value what’s on our phone—like pics and emails—at $14,000.

At The Sexton in Seattle, you’ll actually want to finish your peas. Hear us out. Combining freshly juiced snap peas with decidedly more fun ingredients like Captive Spirits Distilling Big Gin and BroVo Lemon Balm Liqueur, this vegetal libation will swiftly put an end to any lingering protests. Herbal notes from the gin harmonize with the savory nature of the peas and the acidity of the lemon, creating a surprisingly tasty way to get your greens. Visiting in the winter? When the air turns cooler, bartenders swap out peas for carrots and warm things up with rum and house-made cinnamon tincture. Mom and Dad were right after all.

Combine 1 ½ ounces Captive Spirits Distilling Big Gin, ¾ ounce fresh snap pea juice, ½ ounce BroVo Lemon Balm Liqueur, ½ ounce lemon juice, and ½ ounce simple syrup into a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake until combined, and then strain into an ice-filled Collins glass. Garnish with two snap peas on a pick.

Eric Trine’s foray into the world of furniture design was born out of necessity—an empty apartment. Geometric side tables and plant stands crafted out of powder-coated steel. He describes his

Affordable, efficient, and entirely online—interior design gets a makeover. Here’s how CEO and founder Leura Fine describes the digital design service: The ubiquity of e-commerce has brought phenomenal home decor products online, but all of this choice can cause paralysis. With Laurel & Wolf, you take a style quiz, tell us about yourself and your space, and set your own budget. After paying a one-time flat fee per room, which is $299 for the Classic Package, you’re connected with three to five interior designers, each of whom present a custom style board and a short pitch. You and your chosen designer collaborate electronically

to perfect your design: You’re able to click right on the style board and say, “I love the sofa, but I hate the club chair.” You walk away with a fully dimensioned floor plan, instructions for install, a final style board, and a shopping list. The final piece is our “Buy for Me” service, wherein we purchase the items you want and provide shipping and tracking notifications. By leveraging technology, we’ve made the interior design process more efficient and more affordable for everyone.

DATE SMARTER Dating can be fun and invigorating – from that instant attraction you feel the first time you meet to jumping in the car for an impromptu weekend getaway. Unfortunately, it can take a lot of work to get to that stage of dating.

F

rom spending hours sorting through online profiles looking for a good match to trying to connect via pokes, winks and email, dating can suddenly feel like a full-time job.

Wouldn’t it be nice if you could just fast forward to the fun part of dating? That’s exactly what newlyweds Desireé and Michael Schlitt say It’s Just Lunch, a dating service for

With so many dating options out there, why did you choose It's Just Lunch?

D: I travel a lot for work, so I’d read about It’s Just Lunch in airline magazines, and then I ran into a friend who was attending the wedding of an attorney in town who’d met her husband through IJL – the fact that those two events happened so close together, I thought I should call them. At the end of my work day I didn’t want to come home and go look at profiles online. I felt like it was a waste of my time. M: I had gotten a divorce and then did online dating for a while before joining IJL. I joined mainly because it’s a lot of work to do the online thing. You have to keep up on it. You never really know who you’re going to meet. IJL was just a lot easier. They found people for me based on what I was looking for and I just had to show up. You don’t have to do much work. What would you tell a friend who was apprehensive about investing the money on IJL?

M: I’d ask, “Are you looking for a relationship or not?” With online dating you never know who’s on the other side of the line. IJL had better quality people who were interesting to me. It truly was an experience that was tailored for me. Describe your first meeting with an IJL matchmaker?

D: She asked me questions about

myself, what I like to do, what I want in a relationship, whether I’d marry someone who already had kids, how important religion is, that kind of thing. It

would take much longer to find out someone else’s answers to those questions through online dating. This was black and white.

Tell us about your first date with one another.

D: I never went on lunch dates because I was always busy at work so I met Michael after work at a downtown restaurant. The conversation just flowed. I was attracted to him from the start. I remember it turned into dinner.

D: I met my husband, so I guess I would say that! It’s Just Lunch – it’s just a lot of fun. I remember I’d get off a plane and have a voicemail from the matchmaker saying she had a potential date for me. She would tell me about the person and was flexible with scheduling.

WORK Solution

Follow the Leader

What’s the difference between a good boss and a great boss? Management wiz Sydney Finkelstein fills us in. What are a few common misconceptions about leadership? “One is the idea that you have to be a born leader,” says Finkelstein, author of Superbosses: How Exceptional Leaders Master the Flow of Talent. “But you can absolutely learn to be a more effective leader. Secondly, leadership isn’t just for senior executives and CEOs. Every one of us needs to understand how to innovate, how to work with others, and how to communicate effectively.”

44 southwest august 2016

F1_solution_kt.indd 44

What’s a superboss? “These are bosses who are not only successful and innovative in their chosen fields, but they’ve also developed a keen ability to spot talent. I often say superbosses help others accomplish more than they ever thought possible. Because of this they leave a legacy of standout employees.”

Describe some specific practices of superbosses. “They go after untapped talent pools, seeking out people others have bypassed. Superbosses are also uncompromisingly open. They have a very strong vision and aren’t easily swayed; however, they want to hear every good idea you’ve got to fulfill that vision. They delight in the creativity of those around them. Finally, superbosses have resurrected the apprenticeship model: They create big opportunities for people on their team through delegation, but they’ll also work right alongside their employees.”

Any others? “Superbosses figure out what makes each team member tick and how to motivate them rather than operating under the assumption that everyone should adapt to the person in charge. The payoffs of leading this way are big, and anyone can decide to do it. Try employing one tactic for a week at a time and build from there.” Visit quiz.super bosses.com to find out how your leadership skills stack up.

inmates weren’t a big thing. They were just adults. We never thought much of them unless they were pointed out, like Al Capone. But barring those unique things, most kids didn’t pay any attention to the inmates. They didn’t cause trouble, and sometimes they gave us a ball or something if the guards would let them. There were only maybe 60 families and 100 kids, from babies to late teens, living on the island. We didn’t lock our doors. We didn’t have any fear about anything, really. It was just a small community where we knew everyone, had great Halloween parties, had great Christmas parties. Every day, we took a boat to go to school in San Francisco. Coming home, you always went through the metal detector on the dock, and then you went up the stairs or took the bus if you had to. The inmates were held about 70, 80 feet away, behind a yellow line on the dock. When I moved off Alcatraz, in 1953, I was 13 or 14. My father retired, and we moved into the city. I’ve known a lot of people who grew up there, and many have said it was the best time of their lives. We had the privilege to live in a place that allowed us to be kids and at the same time hold a unique status. Chuck Stucker lives in Roseville, California. august 2016 southwest 49

Antelope Island Northwest of Salt Lake City, discover 15 miles of horseback riding, mountain biking, and hiking trails winding across this 28,000-acre state park—the largest of 17 islands in the Great Salt Lake—home to roaming bison, mule deer, and bighorn sheep. And thanks to quick access to some of Utah’s best beaches, it’s also easy to chill once you dismount.

Locals call this tiny getaway the “Key West of the North.” Rent a golf cart and reach anywhere in 10 minutes, like the chocolate museum or Perry’s Cave, where soldiers found an underground lake during the War of 1812.

Once Upon an Island You wouldn’t know it from first glance, but Mexico City, the largest metro area in the Western Hemisphere, was founded on a small island in a lake. Centuries later, the water was drained, the lake covered by a vast sea of concrete. But residents’ daily lives are still shaped by the city’s island origins—in part, writes author Jennifer Clement, because it has been steadily sinking for decades.

even as a child I knew Mexico City had been built on top of Lake Texcoco. Everyone, for as long as I can remember, was always lamenting the sinking Palace of Fine Arts. The radio in our kitchen was often tuned to programs describing how archeologists had to wade through the flooded metro tunnels to retrieve Aztec relics like bones and pottery. Yet no one in Mexico ever asks why the city was built on a lake because we all know it was the fulfillment of a prophecy. In 1325, after wandering for hundreds of years, the Aztecs came upon an island in a lake and saw an eagle perched on

a nopal (prickly pear cactus) with a snake in its beak. The prophecy came from the god of sun and war, Huitzilopochtli, who foretold that when his people encountered an eagle, a snake, and a nopal, their civilization would be founded at that place.

The view from Antelope Island

Here, in the center of the lake, they built Mexico’s first teocalli, or great temple, and out of necessity built canals and floating fields and gardens on the water. Two centuries later, upon beholding the city for the first time, Spanish conquistador Bernal Díaz del Castillo wrote, “It was all so wonderful that I do not know how to describe this first glimpse of things never heard of, seen, or dreamed of before.” In her 1843 classic, Life in Mexico, Frances Calderon de la Barca called the city a “western Venice.” Now, due to the demands of a population the Aztecs

could never have anticipated, Mexico City is sinking like an old, majestic ship moored on quicksand. The effect is dizzying. In the downtown area, many first floors have become basements, and windows have disappeared under sidewalks. To enter my favorite shops, I sometimes have to walk upstairs to a second floor to go downstairs to the first floor. Walls curve and streets undulate. In the towering Metropolitan Cathedral, in the heart of the city’s historic district, the weight of the church bells

has made the structure tilt to one side, and the cumulative stress has caused a large crack in the building. Walls and columns buckle and twist. The measures taken to save the cathedral—scaffolds, shafts, steel panels and walls, wires, and weights—have turned the place into a surreal, sacred puzzle. Right outside, on the Zocalo square, there are glass display windows built into the sidewalk. As indigenous dancers move around me and vendors hawk Japanese peanuts, I can peer through the displays as if I were in a glass bottom boat and see how far the city has sunk.

Rising from the center of the Zocalo, soaring above the city, is an enormous Mexican flag, emblazoned with the symbol of the Aztec myth—an eagle perched on a nopal with a snake in its beak. Each day, as our city descends into the lake, the prophecy fulfilled accompanies our lives. Jennifer Clement is the president of PEN International. Her most recent novel is Prayers for the Stolen. Bedraggled Parents of Toddler Seek Solace on Private Island / BY ALISON MILLER sometimes i lie awake at night, mind numb, the words to “If You’re Happy and You Know It” swirling in my head. If you’ve raised a toddler (or visited a friend with one), you’ll recognize the scenes that lay the groundwork for this addled state: Pebbles of Play-Doh transforming to cement on the dining room table. Pools of milk formed by strewn sippy cups. Pools of tears shed over invisible boo-boos. The days are long, they say, and the years are fast. But these days were moving. Very. Slowly. For a few months, my husband, Dan, and I had been stay-at-home parents of our two-year-old daughter. I work from home; he was between jobs. It was two-on-one, and the one always won. We were exhausted. So when my in-laws told us they were planning a trip to Orlando, Florida, we casually suggested they take Avery along and leave us behind. The only way to make the Magic Kingdom more magical is to see it through the eyes of a toddler, right? They were ecstatic, but their excitement

was no match for ours. With a kid, even simple things like personal hygiene disappear into the time-lapse abyss of potty-training and tortoise-paced walks to the playground. The other day, I hiked three blocks in the wrong direction because I forgot where I parked my car. If there was ever a time to disappear to an island, this was it. I already had my eye on one— Little St. Simons Island—11,000 acres of private, preserved land on the Georgia coast with a maximum of 32 overnight guests. A lodge and a handful of cabins were constructed there in the 1920s and 30s, and not much has changed. Internet is spotty, there are no TVs, and meals are served family-style. It was everything our lives weren’t: quiet, calm, and inhabited by grown-ups. So began our 48 hours of kid-less adulthood. Every trip to Little St. Simons starts with a ride on a small passenger ferry. As the boat weaved through the aqueous path formed by the CONTINUED ON PAGE 65

THE TUPPERWARE FILES:

Meals Served Family Style / BY ANGIE CRUZ That she is cooking again is a relief. The container she sends is an affirmation that she is feeling better, that she is taking her medications. In other words, her arthritis is under control. Her feeling better also means that soon she will call my mother to book her a ticket to the Dominican Republic, which means she no longer feels the need to be near her primary doctor. in my family, a food-filled storage container rivals a tarot-card reading. Through food exchange, the women in my family can divine which sister-in-law is letting things go around the house, which brother is not eating well, which cousin is stingy or generous. Our clan keeps its deck of storage containers organized by brand, by lid color, by wear and tear. This inventory helps us keep tabs on who is giving more than taking, or who is preoccupied about something and off their cooking game—the fish too salty

“good. she’s cooking again,” my mother says, looking at the container sent by my grandmother. It is robust, filled with stewed chicken and a moro of rice and black beans. My grandmother is 82. She used to cook quite a bit, until she began to sit down more. This has us all worried. In Washington Heights, our neighborhood in New York, my grandmother is the nexus of a Dominican clan whose members live within walking distance of one another. Uncles, aunts, cousins, and neighbors all stop by her apartment to gather at her kitchen table. The stove is always on, coffee always percolating. There is always extra food, which she packs in storage containers to distribute to the sick neighbor, the recent widow, or the man making do with instant ramen after being dumped by his wife. We can’t imagine the day my grandmother and her kitchen will no longer be around to hold us together.

more and more, my grandmother prefers to be in the Dominican Republic and not in New York City, where she has to do everything herself—the mopping, the washing, the cooking, the ironing. On the island, she can afford to hire help. She can nap in the middle of the day. She’s not stuck inside a tiny apartment, cut off from the world. Before Washington Heights became gentrified, there was a time when sitting outside on the stoop was common; opening the fire hydrants and setting up a grill on the sidewalk incentivized people to gather outdoors; and boom boxes blasted merengue and bachata. These days, the neighborhood feels like a ghost town. In the D.R., my grandmother is still free to sit outside and play her radio at whatever volume she wants. She doesn’t travel alone, and when asked to travel with her, I always say yes. We used to fly back and forth two or three times a year. This happens less often now that I’m a mother and teach full time, but I still go when I can. Before our most recent trip, my mother asked me to look for her storage containers at my grandmother’s house in the D.R. (It’s common practice to enter each other’s kitchens and retrieve lost wares.) My mother had been fixated on her lost containers: They’re the good kind, BPA-free, with thick plastic and lids that don’t warp in the microwave. (She had paid top dollar for them after reading an article about BPA causing cancer.) And of course, once we arrived, I did find the missing containers. Having made their way to my grandmother’s apartment in Washington Heights, they were inadvertently boxed

or the plantains too oily. The storage containers reveal more than just appetite. We use them as a key into each other’s lives. She mustn’t be feeling well, said my aunt after receiving a container with unsalted rice. She’s about to ask for a big favor favor, my grandmother predicted when a daughter-in-law brought by an elaborate dish composed of grated root vegetables and expensive ingredients. Recipients are expected to wash the container and return to sender, filled. It is a sin to return it empty, a crime if unwashed. The penalty is judgment or worry: “If that woman won’t wash a dish, just imagine what else she neglects.” “She’s letting herself go.” “She must be overworked.” As a teenager, it was my duty to deliver meals made by my mother, aunt, and grandmother. Of all my cousins, I was the favored delivery person because I never refused watered-down Sunny Delight when it was offered. I translated letters from schools, from credit card companies, from the government.

I helped my younger cousins with homework. I knew all the gossip regarding the comings and goings of one storage container or another, proof that So-and-So visited Fulanita but had the audacity not to stop by and see us. When in a hurry, I would hand over the container at the door like a bike messenger, hoping not to be sucked into anyone’s apartment. Entering often meant losing an entire day. After returning from a delivery or pickup, I was rewarded with lollipops, nail polish, chocolates, dollar bills. I also suffered follow-up questions: “Were they alone?” “Did she dye her hair?” “Was your uncle already drinking?”

No one stopped by her house without leaving with food from her kitchen, but neither did anyone visit empty-handed, bringing sacks of oranges, piles of cherries, a decent avocado, bars of dulce de leche. Her house in the D.R. is a living museum. Installed in the living room are objects from various decades, including old-school television sets and record players, many found on the streets of New York, cast away but still useful in her mind. “The salt water, the humidity, destroys everything. You can never have enough stuff,” she says. The house is tucked between an evangelical church and a building under never-ending construction. Bougainvillea and mango trees crowd her garden. Her property is like a birdcage, padlocked and surrounded by iron fences. She carries around a heavy set of keys whose jangling announces when she is nearby. “These are Mami’s,” I tell my grandmother when I hold up the set of Rubbermaid containers. She studies their mint condition—no dents or marks—admiring the way the lids snap perfectly open and closed. I can tell by her expression that she deems my mother to be of equally good quality. A hell of a woman, her daughter. The best. The very best. “I’m taking them with me to New York,” I say, waiting for a fight. “Not until we find something delicious to fill them with,” says my grandmother. “What kind of woman returns an empty container?” Angie Cruz is the author of Soledad and Let It Rain Coffee, which was a 2007 finalist for the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award. CONTINUED FROM PAGE 54 Hampton River at high tide, skirting shores of rippling spartina grass, the wind tousled my hair and the morning sun warmed my skin. I couldn’t shake the feeling we were bandit parents, on the run from diapers, Disney movies, and macaroni and cheese. After arriving and being handed a paper map of the island, we jumped on cruiser bikes, pedaling deep into the expanse of giant magnolias and live oaks cloaked in Spanish moss. “It’s like that scene in Wedding Crashers,” Dan yelled back at me, referring to Owen Wilson and Rachel McAdams gleefully riding down a dirt path to the tune of Mungo Jerry’s “In the Summertime.” A funny thing had happened: In the absence of our own kid, we got to be kids. We biked to the northern tip of the island and back—a 7-mile round trip—stopping only to peer into

the featherweight animal when bumps lie ahead on the sidewalk. And how sometimes when we’re sitting on the couch, she leans over, lays her head on my shoulder, and says, “I love you.” Eric, the resort's bearded naturalist, interrupted us to announce the afternoon’s activity: a hike on Backbone Trail. As we rode through the woods safari-style in the back of a pickup outfitted with bench seats, a second bearded naturalist,

Bayard, spotted birds along the way: great egret, wood stork, red-bellied woodpecker. We entered a thick of old-growth hardwoods that shared the landscape with ephemeral wetlands. “That little thing poking up from the ground that looks like a canoe paddle? That’s a black earth tongue,” Eric explained. We set up a scope to peer at a nesting bald eagle, and on the walk back to the lodge we spotted an alligator not 20 feet from the trail.

“Avery would love this,” I whispered to Dan. Norm’s Pond, named for its resident alligator, and to stare in wonder at an armadillo, oblivious as he nosed around in the dirt. We returned just in time to hear the lunch bell—yes, a staffer really does clink an iron triangle—and ravenously tore into curried chicken salad–stuffed croissants and carrot-ginger soup. As we exchanged introductions with the others (most of them twice our age), it didn’t take long for them to sniff out that we were parents, and soon we were swapping stories about life with kids. Less than 24 hours in her absence, we found ourselves remembering more of the sweet than the unsavory. Like how she carefully buckles her stuffed rabbit into a toy stroller, warning

“Avery would love this,” I whispered to Dan as I pictured her lining up her collection of miniature horses, cows, pigs, and ducks on the edge of the bathtub and lovingly addressing each one. At dinner, over pinot noir and prime rib, guests regaled one another with tales of wildlife encounters. A room full of sun-kissed, windblown adults—including a judge, an architect, and the former dean of a prominent business school—bubbling over like boy and girl scouts. Afterward, Bayard announced a special evening activity: the owl prowl. Dan’s eyes grew wide. He downed what was left in his glass and sprinted outside. We wound the evening down by staring up at the blanket of stars. The new moon had left the sky especially dark, and we recalled as best we could the constellations we were taught in elementary school. We were in a world so pristine, so idyllic, so real, that at times it felt fake. The next day as we kayaked on the creek, a bald eagle flew directly overhead. Seven miles of unadulterated sand make up the Atlantic-facing side of the island, and on our last day we took a walk on the beach at low tide. There were no inflatable toys, no beach chairs, no boardwalk, just the quiet lapping of the ocean on the smooth, packed sand. As we walked along, a handful of other guests, who by now had gotten to know our daughter quite well through mealtime tales, picked up shells and handed them to us—gifts for Avery. We spent the 10 minutes before lunch swaying on a porch swing set up beneath a giant live oak, the sun seeping through its branches. “I miss her,” I said to Dan. To which he replied, in his best toddler-speak, “If you’re happy and you know it, clap your hands.” Alison Miller is a writer in Charlotte. Jacksonville’s craft beer scene has expanded steadily since a mom-son duo opened Bold City Brewery in Riverside in 2008. Today, eight breweries make up the Jax Ale Trail, spanning the metro area from the suburbs to the surf. In San Marco, Aardwolf Brewing Company releases a new small-batch beer every week. Stop in Wednesdays at 5 p.m. for the first pour. Prefer a tried-and-true brew? First-timers at Bold City receive a flight to sample local favorites like the Mad Manatee IPA and Killer Whale Cream Ale. Jax Beer Week, an annual celebration of locally owned breweries, is September 17–24. Coastalinspired spots that’ll have you hooked

SCHOOLS OF THOUGHT Aside from the joy of learning, many people pursue higher education in order to lay the foundation of their careers. It’s been a long time since a high school diploma was enough to guarantee a good job, and with the current job market more competitive than ever, a college degree is starting to look the same. So how exactly do you stand out in 2016? By Jenny Hart

changing the world for the better? In order to become the person to do it, it’s essential to begin by learning from and growing alongside the best in your field. College is the place to start, but some universities offer far greater opportunities than others. As the first institution to document rising carbon dioxide levels in 1958, the University of Califor-

nia San Diego is creating solutions to slow the pace of global warming. You can work and study with faculty experts and students at this “Public Ivy” university, some of whom attended the historic climate agreement in Paris last year, bringing key scientific recommendations to influential international negotiators. LEARN OUTSIDE OF THE CLASSROOM A COMMON CRITICISM of the

education system is that more time is spent memorizing facts than learning practical life skills. Students might graduate knowing trigonometry and the dates of the Civil War, but they are often unsure how to turn their passions into tangible careers. San Antonio’s Trinity University, ranked the No. 1 college in the West by U.S. News & World Report and among the top 10 most entrepreneurial colleges in the country by Forbes, aims to change that. “We teach people how to think,

Trinity University students are encouraged to apply textbook knowledge in non-classroom settings.

not what to think,” says Susie Gonzalez, Trinity’s senior manager of public relations. From the start of their freshman year, students at this liberal arts and sciences university are encouraged to get involved with activities and organizations on and off campus. Though Trinity boasts world-class academics, it is these “experiential learning” opportunities that truly set it apart from other universities. One of the most popular and beneficial options is to partake in an academic internship. With many entry-level jobs requiring applicants to have previous work experience, interning is the perfect way to build up a resume and figure out exactly what it is you want to do. More than 69 percent of Trinity seniors complete internships, and several result in paid positions after graduation. Jacob Tingle, the director of the Office of Experiential Learning at Trinity, loves to tell the success stories of his former students. One young woman, a music major, interned at an opera house … in its sales department. Though sales was not something she had previ-

ous experience in, she ended up developing a real knack for it, and was ultimately offered a full-time position. By combining her passion (music) with a more conventional career path (sales), she found a job that satisfied both her soul and her wallet. Students are often encouraged to double-major for this purpose, says Gonzalez. “We tell them to choose one major for your head and one major for your heart.” That said, there is no pressure for students to find the “perfect” job before graduating, if ever. “The average 40-year-old has had 4.5 jobs and has changed professions four times,” says Tingle. “When you think about that, it’s almost absurd to ask an 18-year-old, or even a 22-year-old, to decide upon one job to have for their entire lives.” Trinity professors focus on skill development, so that when their students go out into the world, they are well-equipped. “Our students can do more than answer the phone,” says Gonzalez. “They’re problem solvers, they’re critical thinkers, and they’re prepared.”

ways. They have a strong focus on neuroscience, neurobiology, and cognitive science. In fact, several faculty members are involved in President Obama’s BRAIN Initiative, a $100-million neuroscience research program focused on revolutionizing our understanding of the human brain. Studying with top industry experts affords opportunities you won’t find elsewhere.

a parent might joke, “I don’t know where he gets that from!” Likewise, if the child has an exceptional talent, it’s not uncommon to hear, “She gets that from me!” And while good parenting is a necessary building block of any child’s upbringing, it’s especially rewarding for a child to come home with a new skill or piece of knowledge and to excitedly think, “Where did he learn that?” To make this a daily occurrence, enroll your child at Kiddie Academy, an educational childcare program with locations across the country. Kiddie Academy offers specialized curriculums for children as young as 6 weeks old through 12 years of age, and focuses on preparing children for school and for life. They

understand that school readiness includes—but is more than—academic skills. Kiddie Academy’s curriculum (a program called “Life Essentials”) encompasses a range of physical, social, emotional, and cognitive skills that children need to thrive in a school setting.

The earlier your child is encouraged to study, play by the rules, be inquisitive, and sincerely have fun, the more natural the inclinations will be, and ultimately, the easier it will be for them to achieve academic success. Sure beats an afternoon in front of the television set!

Investing in the future While working in corporate America, David Willis witnessed the uncertainty that comes with being an employee instead of an owner, particularly in the banking segment. He says “I was looking for a financial investment that could provide ongoing income to sustain our family for the long haul.” As a result, David chose to purchase real estate and build an all-new location with support from Kiddie Academy’s Real Estate and Construction teams. With prior business experience working for brands such as GE and Bank of America, David did a great deal of research before deciding to open his Kiddie Academy of Charlotte – Blakeney in August, 2011. He knew the market, believed in the Kiddie Academy concept, and most importantly, understood what children and parents need from a childcare center. His customer-centric approach has distinguished his Kiddie Academy in the market.

For David Willis, building a new Kiddie Academy location helped him to reach both a personal and professional goal. “Finding childcare for my two children certainly spurred me to consider opening my own business. My wife and I couldn’t find the educational experience we wanted for our own children, so we saw opening our Kiddie Academy as an investment in our children’s future as well as a business venture.” Over the last several years David and his academy have won several awards, including Community Leadership, Sales and Customer Service, Best Practices: Character Education, Developmentally Appropriate Curriculum, Health and Fitness and Technology Education.

MAKING WAVES

Live at 35 with VÉRITÉ The singer-songwriter performs mid-air for Southwest Airlines and explores Costa Rica

“This is so crazy,” 26-year-old art-pop star VÉRITÉ whispers from behind her keyboard, situated mid-aisle outside the flight deck, “but so much fun!” VÉRITÉ, a.k.a. Kelsey Byrne, is on her way to a Costa Rican adventure, taking advantage of Southwest Airlines’ nonstop service from Los Angeles to Liberia/Guanacaste, Costa Rica. A firm believer that getting there is half the fun, she performed in Southwest’s Live at 35 music series, where up-and-coming artists put on surprise inflight concerts. VÉRITÉ beams as the final notes of the single from her latest EP, Living, reverberate throughout the plane. Passengers

enthusiastically applaud … and now the adventure can truly begin. “I love this sense of wanderlust,” VÉRITÉ says beneath the early morning Costa Rican sun. “I have no solid plans.” After walking down the black sand beach of Playa Hermosa, VÉRITÉ heads to the bustling marketplace of Playa del Coco, where local merchants proudly display their wares. The sun is hot, but the breeze is cool, and fresh tuna on pineapple is on the lunch menu. This relaxed way of life is what the locals call “pura vida.” After lunch, VÉRITÉ takes a risk and accepts an invitation from Cappy, a local fisherman, to go snorkeling. A novice, she’s somewhat hesitant but decides to go for it. Out at sea, VÉRITÉ takes a deep breath and plunges off the boat. Twenty minutes later, she emerges with the afternoon sun shining on her smiling face. “Oddly, I wasn’t scared,” she says. “It’s all about the spontaneous experience. I was just lost in the moment.” —Drew Fortune, SPIN

Heart of the Community CHECK MATES

New Life at Lindbergh Forum

Building Community in Mexico City A trip to the Lindbergh Forum on any Saturday means you might encounter children reading with their grandparents, students listening to a live band, friends kicking around a soccer ball, and salsa dancers twirling—and that’s just for starters. Since December 2015, Lugares Públicos has helped citizens reimagine the historic Lindbergh Forum, an art deco plaza at the center of Parque Mexico in Mexico City’s Roma-Condesa District. Our work is supported by the Southwest Airlines Heart of the Community program, and it’s an honor to be the first project outside the U.S. to receive a grant. Mexico has a grand tradition of public spaces, but rarely do citizens actively shape the places that are vital to their everyday lives. The Lindbergh Forum began this process with a series of on-site workshops asking neighbors and visitors what they’d like to see or do there. Based on that input, more than 100 different activities and events have

taken place in the past few months, including yoga classes, movie screenings, concerts, art exhibitions, and theatrical performances. One of the most inventive and popular programs is the Plant Clinic. All weekend long, a local gardening expert parks his “Plant Ambulance” at the forum and offers advice and hands-on workshops related to plants and urban farming. Along with programs, we’ve added more tables and seating, a game center, and a bicycle-powered book cart, designed and built by area residents and operated in partnership with the nearby library. Although the forum has always been a beloved gathering point for the neighborhood, today it is more alive than ever. We hope this project will become a model for community-led programming in Mexico and inspire others throughout the country to collaborate and improve public spaces. —Guillermo Bernal, Founder & Director, Lugares Públicos A.C. In 2014, Southwest launched the Heart of the Community program, which awards grants to create public spaces in the hearts of communities served by the airline. To date, the program has supported 18 innovative and transformative projects. To learn more, visit pps. org/Heart-of-the-Community.

One Question

Christopher Walken,

Watch Christopher in Nine Lives, which hits theaters August 5.

I think it would be nice to play somebody’s grandfather or somebody’s uncle. A nice guy. I don’t get a lot of those parts. I played very disturbed people in two of the first movies I made: In Annie Hall I play a guy who wants to drive his car into head-on traffic, and in The Deer Hunter I shoot myself. Both movies were very popular, so I got noticed for being a little bit strange. It’s ironic because up to that point I’d been cast as silly young guys in musical theater.

what’s a role you’d like to play?
