DATING ROI
Technology has made dating more complicated and impersonal. Hiring a matchmaker might be the smartest investment you could make in your personal life. At first, Larry Chiarelli, director at a tech start up, thought he was doing all he needed. Sign up on multiple dating websites. Meet lots of women. Eventually, the right one would come along – except she never did. So he decided to bring in the professionals and hired It’s Just Lunch. IJL’s matchmakers got to know him and his preferences. They selected his dates, arranged schedules, and even made the restaurant reservations. Dating
became stress-free and fun. Larry was a practical guy and didn’t believe in love-at-first-sight, but that was until IJL introduced him to Ping.
so I could feel some breathing room. I needed to slow things down to speed them up. IJL fit that criteria perfectly for me.
What was your dating life like before joining It’s Just Lunch? Lawrence: Chaotic! I was meeting a lot of women but not the right women for me. Online dating was time consuming and stressful. I needed someone to help out, to relieve me of the dating busy work
Ping: I was very busy with work when I discovered IJL. I was seeing different people I mostly met through friends and by attending events. Online dating seemed so time consuming so I was never willing to invest what little time I had into something so hit and miss.

I used to tell my friends: Who has time for online dating…browsing through profiles all night when I could be doing something else with my time." Why did you decide to join It’s Just Lunch? L: A good friend of mine mentioned that IJL may be a good resource for meeting women who were a better match for me. Plus, joining would let me get back some time in my life that was sorely lacking.
P: I fly frequently for work and for fun, and when I saw It’s Just Lunch in the airline magazine, it was as if the matchmaker was talking to me! One day after a particularly long flight and wanting to snuggle with someone and watch a movie, I decided it couldn't hurt to give it a try. What did you enjoy most about the It's Just Lunch process? L: Having someone doing all the work to select and schedule a date. It was like I had my own personal dating concierge to take care of all the details. All I had to do was be on time for my date and be myself. It really was a stress-free experience.
P: The stress-free experience! I had a professional matchmaker to select matches and set up restaurant reservations for me. All I needed to do was to show up and focus on getting to know my date.
What was it like working with the It's Just Lunch matchmakers? L: Easy and convenient. At the time the company I was working for was going through a merger so I was away from home quite a bit in all day meetings. I’d finish my day and there would be a
voicemail from my matchmaker telling me about my next match. I’d call back, get the details and run through my availability. The next thing I knew I was in front of an interesting woman having a great conversation. P: Stress-free and fun! Exactly what I needed because dating can be so frustrating. I always looked forward to meeting my next match.
Do you have any advice for singles who want to meet that special someone? L: I often ask my clients: Would you rather drive across the country in a Toyota Corolla or a BMW 5 series? They always say the 5 series. You get what you pay for. Investing in yourself and your future with someone special means investing in the right matchmaking service. For me that was It’s Just Lunch. P: Invest in your own happiness, it is always worth it. I never would have met Larry if I hadn’t joined It’s Just Lunch. It’s the best decision I've ever made.
IT’S JUST LUNCH SIGNATURE MATCHMAKING PROCESS: 1 Through a series of conversations, we get to know you and your relationship goals. 2 Your match is hand-selected and your date arranged. We’ll even make the restaurant reservations. 3 Meet your date face to face. 4 Call us with feedback after your date. 5 Put your membership on hold if sparks flew. (No sparks? No problem. We’ll get to work arranging your next match.)
The success of It’s Just Lunch is built on creating high quality matches in low pressure situations. In 26 years, they’ve set up millions of first dates. Make meeting someone special a priority. Get in touch at 800-8586526 or www.itsjustlunch.com.

Gary’s Greeting
Living the Southwest Way day from appreciative Customers letting me know of incredible acts of kindness and Hospitality from our Employees. Whether it’s a Pilot who helps a mother traveling alone with her children rush to the gate in time to catch a flight or a Ramp Agent who tracks down a lost bag tag and mails it to a Customer, our People love to serve our Customers. We take our competition seriously, but not ourselves. It’s not hard to find examples of our Fun-LUVing Attitude shining through. You can see it when one of our Customer Service Agents
plays gate games with our Customers waiting for a flight, when one of our Flight Attendants tells a joke or sings the Safety announcement, or when a talented Employee plays the ukulele for Customers while they board. We enjoy our work, and I wouldn’t want it any other way. Our Warrior Spirits were born during years of legal battles just to get Southwest off the ground. Those same Warrior Spirits live on today as we continue to succeed in a brutally competitive industry. It’s not just about working hard—although that is a big part of it. It’s about finding a way to beat the competition. Southwest has a long and storied history of success—we’ve been profitable for 44 consecutive years (a record unheard of and unmatched in our industry); we’ve been a mainstay on Fortune’s list of the World’s Most Admired Companies in America (ranking eighth in 2017); and we consistently finish on top of the Department of Transportation’s Customer Service rankings, coming in No. 1 again last year. But without a doubt, my single greatest source of pride is that we have never had an involuntary furlough in our history. And it’s all made possible by our People Living the Southwest Way!
Gary Kelly Chairman and CEO Southwest Airlines

I’ve been incredibly blessed to call Southwest Airlines my home away from home for the past 31-plus years. This truly is a unique and special Company for so many reasons, but if I had to sum it up with one, without a doubt it’s our People. We ask three things of our People, which we call “Living the Southwest Way.” Simply put, Living the Southwest Way means having a Servant’s Heart, a Fun-LUVing Attitude, and a Warrior Spirit. We seek to hire People who have a passion for serving others, or a Servant’s Heart. I get a stack of letters every single

BIRD’S EYE VIEW
Challenger Soars with Southwest
The bald eagle reaches new heights as we glide into football season. Meet Challenger. Not only is he an American bald eagle—and quite possibly the most famous eagle in the world— he’s one of Southwest Airlines’ most frequent flyers. Challenger is a 28-year-old bald eagle who accidently imprinted on a human when he was a young eaglet. Because of this, Challenger was unable to learn to live in the wild and was rescued by the American Eagle Foundation. The foundation quickly realized that Challenger was not like any other eagle, and his unique ability to respond to humans enabled him to become the first eagle to free-fly through stadiums
during the long-standing tradition of the national anthem. Now, Challenger has flown at nearly 400 events, including the World Series and NFL Pro Bowl. Through these appearances, Challenger has educated and inspired millions of people on eagle preservation. You may have even been onboard one of Challenger’s Southwest flights. Due to our special relationship with the American Eagle Foundation, Challenger has traveled on nearly 51 one-way flights since 2016. Southwest is honored to be a part of Challenger’s Team as he gears up to take flight. Be sure to keep your eyes peeled this fall during Challenger’s peak travel season. To see more of Challenger and find out what it’s like to fly from an eagle’s eye view, watch our video at swa.is/Challenger. —Tiffany Valdez, Communication & Outreach

FROM THE HEART
Lasting memories are made at Foro Lindbergh, located in Mexico City’s Parque Mexico.
Beyond the Gate
Southwest Airlines builds relationships through Heart of the Community. For people who have never flown Southwest, our boarding process can seem a little different—no assigned seats or group boarding. As our Gate Agents ask groups A, B, and C to line up, Customers must collaborate and work together to identify their place in line based on numeric order. I personally love watching this social experiment unfold because it forces people to intermingle. The interactions vary, but often small talk and even laughter ensues. While these moments during boarding may be fleeting, imagine if that same group of Customers repeated this process day after day. How would the conversation and the interactions grow and change? That is the idea behind Southwest’s Heart of the Community program. By investing in authentic relationships and creating spaces and opportunities that bring people together, we can build connections that strengthen communities. Strong community networks are essential in overcoming obstacles. More often than not,
residents and local organizations know exactly what the problems are, but it takes collaboration to develop and implement effective plans for solving them. Southwest works with national partners Project for Public Spaces and Points of Light to engage communities in collaborative discussion in an effort to empower residents and drive change. Now think back to the boarding process. If the Customers all knew each other, what effect might that have? Would they line up quicker? Would even more conversation and laughter ensue? Public spaces can act as central gathering hubs for neighbors to interact, have fun, and get to know one another. Southwest is proud to support communities in their efforts to improve these spaces and allow even more connections to flourish. This year, we are excited to support community efforts in New Orleans, Buffalo, Oklahoma City, Atlanta, Chicago, and Phoenix. Since 2013, Southwest has invested more than $6.4 million in building connections in local communities across our network. Whether at our gates, in our planes, or out in the communities we serve, Southwest is committed to building community, and we hope you will join us! —Laura Hoagland, Community Programs & Engagement

Dear Southwest,
There was a mother and her two young girls in front of me on the plane, and the baby suddenly had a very loud crying fit that wouldn’t stop. Flight attendant Herb Dunn asked the mother to come to the back of the plane with him. I looked back and saw him blowing bubbles for the little girl until she stopped crying. He was also giving tissues to the mother and consoling her, as she was crying, too. There are some seriously kind people in this world. —Carrie Jaboor

HOSPITALIT Y FOR A MILITARY MOM
I arrived at the Providence airport for a flight to Baltimore dressed in my full military uniform. I was starting a two-year overseas assignment for the Air Force and was leaving my husband and 5-yearold son behind. After saying tear-filled goodbyes, I stood at my gate waiting to board. After ops agent May Lodge made her announcements and started boarding, she quietly walked over to me and personally thanked me for my military service and invited me to board early. As she helped me with my two carryons, she told me she had a son in the Air Force, and then asked me where I was going and for how long. After replying, she asked about my family, which brought tears to my eyes. She gave me a hug that only a mom can give and that only a military member leaving everything they cherish behind can truly understand. Surprisingly, a sense of peace and calm came over me as I walked down the jet bridge and slid into my seat. I wanted to pass on my gratitude to May, who made such a miserable day unexpectedly brighter. —Kristina Lamothe

LOST AND FOUND
I travel at least once a month for work and already held Southwest Airlines in high regard, but recently, your flight crew went above and beyond the call of duty. I flew into Denver from Omaha, with a 90-minute layover before continuing on to Sacramento. As I was on the ramp to board my second flight, I realized I had left my jacket on the previous plane. I honestly believed I would never see it again. As I was boarding the aircraft, I asked if there was a good number to call for a Southwest lost and found at the Denver airport. To my complete surprise, Captain Bret Thunell sprang into action and asked me what the jacket looked like, what gate I flew in on, and for my previous flight number. In a flash, he was off searching for my jacket. Eight minutes later, I was reunited with my jacket and, most importantly, an ID badge that I needed for work. I did not ask your captain to do this for me and that made it all the more special. I’ve been flying Southwest
since I was 4 months old, and it is people like this who keep me a consistent customer. —Marie Crim ENTERTAINING HOSPITALIT Y
I wanted to compliment flight attendant Lane Lee on a recent flight from Phoenix to Raleigh-Durham. There was a little girl in the row in front of me who was flying alone. She was probably 8 years old and had a mobile device with her to play on. She couldn’t connect with WiFi because she didn’t have any means to do so. Lane used his personal credit card to pay for her WiFi so she could be entertained while flying. He made no bones about doing it, and I thought that was above and beyond as far as customer service goes. —Sadie Oates “LET’S GO LOVE PEOPLE”
I was returning to Washington from Austin, and prior to us taxiing away from the gate, Captain Chad Vander Kooi came over the PA system. He challenged everyone on our flight to love on people and encouraged
us all to call someone then to make sure they knew how much we loved them. I called my husband, and then posted on Facebook. My friends and co-workers are slightly obsessed with Southwest, so I knew they would love to hear this. When we were getting ready to land, I thought to get a picture with the pilot that I could use with my original Facebook post, and to share on your page. As I was making my way to the front of the plane, I spotted Captain Vander Kooi. He had gloves on and was assisting the flight attendants in picking up the trash and organizing the seat belts. Wow! I went up to him and asked for a picture, and he said, “Of course. Let’s go to the cockpit so you can check it out and get a good picture.” Even more wow! I went to the cockpit, took a picture, met the first officer, and prepared to head out. As I got up, he said, “Now let’s go love people.” Southwest Airlines, you continue to surpass your challenge to care about people before caring about business. —Ashley Duenas

Dear Reader, Know what I think we could all use more of? Conversational sports: activities that let us get some fresh air while shooting the breeze with a friend. Golf is just such a sport. While strolling or riding through a beautiful green space, you have generous time for conversation. That must be why CEOs and most American presidents love to golf. They get to know people better while everybody is relaxed for a change. Only one sport rivals golf for a decent gab, and that’s fishing. I am proud to say that I once combined the best conversational elements of both, while actually combining those sports in a single talkative session. I was working for a large publishing company at the time. Over a long weekend, we managers went on retreat at a beautiful golf resort in southern Virginia. Given
an afternoon off, a colleague and I grabbed a cart, played some holes, and had a pleasant chat. While she drove, I opened a compartment and discovered two items perfect for every wannabe MacGyver: a paper clip and some string. “Stop the cart!” I said. We were pulling up beside a water hazard. “Ever been fishing?” She hadn’t. I dug in the mud and found a night crawler, fashioned the paper clip into a hook, and attached the worm. The moment I tossed the line, a huge smallmouth bass struck, leaping out of the water and sending up a geyser of spray. Of course the fish shook the “hook” right off, which was fine. That was the topic of conversation for the rest of the afternoon, and it was all everybody wanted to talk about for the rest of the retreat. While I’m no golfer and a mediocre angler, for a moment I felt like the greatest sportsman in the world. Conversationally speaking.

I smiled through tears reading about Steve Almond’s memories and stories of camp—and the difference between the two—in “Welcome Back to Camp Tawonga!” [May 2017]. My husband had the same experience at Farm & Wilderness in Vermont, where he spent one transformative summer at the age of 10, and then became a counselor at 20. For the last 30-plus years, he has regaled us with how he and his fellow campers plowed entire fields by hand, felled trees, swam across the lake, and, yes, snuck over to the girls’ cabins. Later, our own kids went, and it will soon be our grandchildren’s turn. I’m sure if my husband went back, he would see camp from the same perch as Mr. Almond. Lorraine Doo BALTIMORE

Set a new course with these ultra-comfy shoes. Thanks to Allbirds’ Wool Runners ($95), sole searching just got a lot easier. These lightweight kicks are made from merino wool, which regulates temperature, helps wick away moisture, and makes them super soft. Allbirds fashions the stylish sneaks with an eye to sustainability, and its wool takes 60 percent less energy to produce than the synthetic materials typically used in shoes. You can also machine wash the Wool Runners (remember to let them air dry), and replacement merino-lined insoles are available to purchase as needed. Sounds like you have a new running companion.

TRE NDING
Eating Houses
They’re not inns. (Too quaint.) They’re not bed and breakfasts. (Way too quaint.) But a trend needs a name, so we’re unilaterally deciding to call them “eating houses.” Here’s the idea: one restaurant, usually with a killer bar, with a handful of guest rooms to rent out upstairs. In Philadelphia, that’s Wm. Mulherin’s Sons, housed in a 19th-century whiskey factory. The cuisine skews rustic Italian—think agnolotti with suckling pig or blistered speck, potato, and egg pizza. Finish the night with the Sister Francis, a spin on a Boulevardier that’s made with an artichoke-based liqueur, and then check in with the restaurant staff for your room key. You may never go outside again.

Manzana-rita This past spring, as the winter cool left Nashville and the trees began to bud, Bastion bartender Adam Binder began dreaming of margaritas: bright and citrusy, with that salt-and-pepper tequila bite. Then his mind began to wander. He cut the usual tequila portion in half and filled the gap with apple brandy. (Manzana. Get it?) Then came a splash of mezcal for smokiness, and instead of agave syrup or orange liqueur, he whipped up a green apple syrup. “We wanted to try something that was familiar in idea, but with an ingredient that people don’t drink as much as they should— apples,” Adam says. You may not be needing your doctor for a while.
MAKE IT ← Add 1 ounce Cimarron tequila blanco, 1 ounce Laird’s Applejack, ¼ ounce Los Siete Misterios mezcal, 1 ounce apple syrup*, ¾ ounce lime juice, and 2 dashes Regan’s orange bitters to an ice-filled shaker; shake until frosty. Strain into a goblet rimmed with salt and sugar, and garnish with an apple chip. *Juice 8 ounces green apples by weight and add equal part sugar. Add a teaspoon of vitamin C powder to keep color. Heat on low until sugar dissolves; cool and use.

The jewelry mogul measures success not in money earned, but in dollars given away. I lost my stepfather to brain cancer when he was 47. Late in his battle, he had difficulty speaking. I took him to my hat store, my first business, and he was so proud. He put three words together: “You do good.” He was saying that we get a limited amount of time on this earth and have to make an impact using the gifts we’re given. From day one when I started Kendra Scott out of my spare bedroom, I vowed we would have a “never say no”
policy. If someone needed something— earrings for a charity auction or a necklace for a raffle—we would do it. Here we are, 15 years later, with more than 2,000 employees and nearly 70 stores, and we have the same policy. Last year, we gave away more than 75,000 pieces of jewelry and more than $3.5 million to more than 3,500 organizations. That’s the thing I am most proud of: being able to create a business with an authentic, philanthropic heart.
BUSINESS READ I attended an MIT entrepreneurial masters course and we read Mastering the Rockefeller Habits by Verne Harnish. It’s great for establishing your core values and mission. IN A NAME Our pieces are named after people: family, friends, employees, unbelievable customers. Each piece reflects the woman’s personality—if she’s big and bold, she gets a statement piece. If she’s quieter, it’s more delicate. TR AVEL MUST-HAVES If I’m gone for more than three days, I take my kids. My little one is 3, and he’s always tagging along to store openings. How a pair of promises led to traveling the world with our son—and his red stroller—in tow. / BY KASE JOHNSTUN

he Rocky Mountains sat behind us, huddling like giant notaries, as Mary and I drank beer and ate barbecue and confessed to each other that neither of us wanted children. Our moving forward in marriage depended on that pact, we agreed. Yet, for the next seven years, people—family members and friends with kids and strangers in grocery stores—bothered us to have kids anyway. Mary and I moved from Salt Lake City to Champaign, Illinois, back to Salt Lake, and then to Tacoma, Washington, throwing suitcases in the trunk on a moment’s notice and taking road trips across the Upper Midwest or through the national

parks of Southern Utah, only returning home when our jobs demanded it. We jumped on planes, drank in airports, and took taxis to hotels by the beach where we fell onto our beds without any worry. The only people we had to take care of were each other, and we were really good at that. Maybe it was that people eventually gave up on us having kids. Maybe it was because we had won the fight, and everyone—minus the random woman in the grocery store who asked why we hadn’t had children—stopped pressuring us. Or maybe it was just our time, our love, our outlook on the world, our want to have a child with equal parts of both of august 2017 Southwest 45

us (something we would find out later is impossible). But we, like two brightly colored birds crossing in the sky and stopping to touch wings—gently and beautifully and without fight—agreed upon trying to have a child. One night soon after, we promised each other, no matter what it took, that we wouldn’t stop traveling. We wouldn’t wait until it was easy, until our child could take care of him or herself. This pact replaced the first pact we had made beneath the Rockies. And so, in 2012, 10 months after our son’s birth, we booked a trip to Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula. Before taking off, on a whim, we walked into Wal-Mart and walked out with a black and red umbrella stroller that cost less than $15. Lukas had grown out of the stroller that held his car seat, the type that clicked into the base in the car. We bought the new one as a temporary solution. We needed to transport our son around when he did not

It fell outward onto the ground, its plastic, hollow wheels making a cracking sound against the pavement outside Wal-Mart. We placed Lukas in it and strapped him in. He leaned back into the canvas and rode to the car without a struggle. WITH OUR SON in tow, we spent nearly a month in the tiny fishing village of Chelem. We ate dinner at the sea-washed restaurants near the beach, the sandy and salty winds stripping the paint from the concrete walls, and we bought our groceries from the tiny shop on the corner of the town square. Our son rode on my back up the stairs of
the Mayan pyramids and crawled on the stone of the temples, and we explored Mérida, a culturally rich city to the south of Chelem. On the edge of Chelem’s town square sat a market, three rooms by three rooms, which greeted us with barn-door like entrances that slid open at random times during the day and week; the roof had been opened up to let in light. I kicked the plastic lever on Lukas’ stroller, and Mary dropped him in. The plastic wheels wiggled along the road and up the path into the market. Two women walked around a fruit and vegetable stand, spraying water on top of the produce.

The women looked at us, and then at Lukas in his stroller. In a second’s time, they had shelved their hoses, run around the fruit stand, and dropped down and crouched in front of our boy. Balancing on their toes and sitting on their heels, each held out pieces of mango and papaya. “Guapo,” one said. Lukas, a shy baby (and still shy now, at 6), turned from her and dug his head into the canvas behind him. She smiled and rose and showed us around the stand. I confused everyone with my rusty Spanish as they pinched Lukas’ cheeks and ran their hands through his blond hair. The women sold us fruit and vegetables, and we walked out of the market with a bag full of freshness, not knowing what half of it was. On the trip, it wasn’t easy. Lukas did everything a 1-year-old does. He struggled in his car seat during long drives to the ruins. He complained when we wouldn’t let him crawl on the bug-populated grasses of Uxmal or eat the giant mosquitoes that landed on his arm. The fear that traveling would never be completely enjoyable again rose up inside of me. While we loved having him with us, I began to accept the fact that the easy times of travel, walking hand in hand and laughing, were gone. But we kept keeping our promise. Two years later, on our way to Copenhagen, Denmark, we stopped in New York City for four days. The newly erected National September 11 Memorial & Museum had opened only weeks earlier, and Mary, more than anything, wanted to tour it, to walk the hallways and to read the placards and to stare at the art and to get lost in what she had always loved, digesting the world through the art and writing and tributes of others. Our son was having none of that. The moment we stepped into the museum, he wanted to touch everything. For the same reason that we, as adults, love to spend
time in museums—the richness of the human experience on the walls and in the glass cases, shown in bright colors and in uniquely crafted shapes—Lukas loved what he saw and wanted to grab all of it. After we calmly reminded him, “No, we can’t touch this,” and “That’s not for us” 20 times, the little boy began to get frustrated, his cheeks burning bright red and his eyes welling up. Then came the tantrum, and soon our
quick exit from the museum. Mary did her best to remember all she could while we walked through the crowds and to the exit, having seen so little of what we wanted to see. We went to Greece last year and tried New York again in January. Our first day in Manhattan, the remnants of memories from our museum fiasco still lingering, we walked through the doors of the American Museum of Natural History. This seemed much more

suitable for a child’s taste. (As parents, we try to learn too.) Lukas no longer needed the stroller, but we purchased him a little notebook so he could have something to hold while he walked through the massive hallways, beneath the archways that stretched above us like a stone umbrella. Lukas immediately spotted the mummies. He walked up to the first one, wrapped and decayed on a table and within a thick glass enclosure. His 5-year-old breath fogged the bottom of the glass. The security guard walked up behind him but didn’t say a word. Mary and I both reached out to touch his shoulder to bring him back from the glass, both of our hands hovering over him but not quite making contact, doing our best not to jump the gun. Our son pushed his thin blond hair out of his eyes with one hand and reached into his pocket with the other, grabbing the pencil and notebook. He sat down in the middle of the museum in front of the exhibit and began to draw the mummy. His little hand worked back and forth on the page, he blew his hair out of his eyes, and he glanced at the mummy before returning pencil to paper. The security guard stepped back, gave us a smile, and complimented us on our well-behaved son. It would eventually take us two hours to get through Egypt, another two to get through the dinosaurs, and another two to walk out from beneath the belly of the massive blue whale on the basement floor. Mary and I would hold hands and walk slowly behind our big kid. We would smile and relax and laugh. But in that moment, once he was comfortable with what he had drawn, Lukas stood up, grabbed both our hands, and led us around another corner, his eyes wide and ready for what was to come.

Also, she had recently received a microscope. It had been her cousin’s. He was a cardiologist, and in his retirement, he started photographing heart cells. When he died in 2007, his family gave Rose-Lynn the microscope—a late 1970s Carl Zeiss with a digital camera mounted on top. She took it home and, at first, looked at liquids that weren’t tears: blood, orange juice, pomegranate juice, seawater. She had worked with a scanning electron microscope in a lab before, photographing bees, but this was quite different, not a threedimensional object but a fluid, dried upon a thin rectangular glass slide—mounted, with the light from below moving through the liquid, through the camera’s lens, and into her eye. She was looking for something in these dried liquids, not just something visually striking, but something deeper. Maybe that something was funny or strange or— she wasn’t quite sure. She’d know it when
F2_tears_kdm.indd 52
she saw it. She’d once, starting about 15 years ago, done a photographic series on abandoned couches in her Hollywood neighborhood. There was something about those couches, the fact of them, the situational comedy and tragedy and personality that made her continue seeking them out and making images from them. She found one behind a gate that looked like it was in jail, and another with a sheet over it that looked maimed or like someone was about to operate on it. And then there was this whole other story, just below the surface of those cast-aside street couches, a story about dashed dreams and abandonment. A very human, very Hollywood story. She was looking for something similar through the lens of her cousin’s microscope. Not the same story, of course, but a project that would ripen and change and carry her through years and years. Then the tears started and did not stop. They came from a complex stew of emotions, mostly prompted by a sudden spate of deaths, the loss of many loved ones. There was sadness, but there was also a good bit of joy. The joy of knowing these people— wise elders, she called them. Joy for their overlapping spans together on this earth. Nothing was driving the urge to see what her tears looked like under the microscope so much as sheer curiosity. Plus, they were liquid. The light could move through them. So. When she saw the magnified tears for the first time, there was a strange, almost overwhelming sense of awe. There were patterns, and there were shapes, and there were strange striations. Geometry, broken and unbroken, walls and fortresses. Bubbles, bursting apart, forming coastlines. She shifted the slide beneath the lens and gasped as the patterns ended and began

anew. There was a feeling of being inside something large, almost unknowably large. She felt humbled and small. The view, she realized, was a lot like looking out a window in an airplane, down at the earth far below. All in a dried-up teardrop. When is a photograph finished? We think of photographs as fixed moments:
everything was sharply angled, the grid of streets and slant of light and cut of the shadows. Her life defined by geometries. At Otis, she studied under the artist Betye Saar, who worked in many mediums but is perhaps most famous for her mixed media collages. Rose-Lynn started as a painter but has done plenty of collage, too. What she remembers best, though, the lesson most important from her time with Saar, is identifying the element in her art that is the way in: for her, the artist, the way forward through the work; for us, the viewer, the way inside it. “Where is that? Where’s the fullness of energy? And if you can identify that point, stay with it. Don’t complicate it.” That’s what Saar taught her. Now, with the tears, she latched onto this point of entry—the worlds within the teardrops—and it propelled her forward, through more tears. Most came through loss and breakups and fights and general emotional hardship. Her mother got very sick, and stayed sick, for a very long time. Other tears came from thick bouts of laughter. And some were prompted by chopping onions. The slides piled up, close to a hundred, then more. When she looked at them on her computer screen, wired to the camera mounted on the microscope, she flew over the landscapes, going very quiet, into a meditative state, waiting for the topography to speak back to her. This was the part she didn’t want to talk about too much, or even know about: the mystery in selecting exactly the aspect of the world within a tear to photograph, and what it might mean. “You just wanna be with it,” she said, meaning the topography of her tears. This process of selection was, in a way, much like painting or collage. A process spread out over time. She was seeking the sliver of landscape that captured the mix of emotions that had led to the release of the tear, a liquid then mounted onto a glass slide. The eventual image she would
If there was one thing she’d learned through this whole, tearful period, it was to abide in the unknowable. a shutter clicked, light captured, time stopped. But what if a photograph’s finished state comes much later? What if the moment is not fixed at all, but stretched out across time, its ideal reached not upon its capture or when it is developed, but long after, when it is eventually looked at? Finally seen. Rose-Lynn, now 62, studied at Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles, where she’s lived since she was young. She was born in Minneapolis and remembers her earliest years there in the suburbs, on a cul-de-sac, close to nature, as being full of circles: smoothed-out pebbles, rolling hills, winding paths, round ponds. In L.A.,

land on, she said, was the part within the landscape “that takes me somewhere, that makes me know something I can’t know with my mind.” It was an aspect of the landscape beyond words or thought, much like the inexplicable nature of a very specific feeling. Then, often, the image would inspire a phrase. Something like a title. Some of these titles were concrete, tied to a specific emotion—“Remorse” or “Resolution”—or an incident like “Mom happy tears” or “Laughing till I’m crying.” More often they were oblique references, small parts in a larger story that could arrive mid-sentence, or at the story’s beginning or, more commonly, the end. One, titled “As she crossed over the bridge disappeared,” was about Rose-Lynn’s dog, Ginger. The title was meant to be said in one breath, “like leaving and taking every thing with you as you go.” Rose-Lynn had been with Ginger—“a little dog, and all love”—when she died. Rose-Lynn watched her go, and cried. Then she took that moment, the all-at-once-ness of passing over,
Ginger’s being there and then not—and collected it on a slide. She found in her tear a landscape that reminded her of nothing but sweetness. Ginger’s sweetness coming through in that image. The phrase about the bridge came to mind. It was a story she could gesture at, Rose-Lynn said, but not a story she could or would want to write. She didn’t want to detract from the real essential thing, which was a mysterious microscopic landscape inside the residue of a complex emotion. “As I went along, I realized my story is just my story: one moment of crying,” she said. “Everyone has their moments …” She stopped. The room was very quiet. We were in her mother’s home, which was now her own, because her mother had died not long ago. This was tricky, opening up, telling her story, because it could interfere with the art. “I don’t want to restrict it,” she said. “I don’t want to say, ‘This is how you should look at it.’” In her paintings and collages, the ones she’d made early in her CONTINUED ON PAGE 72

Meet Larry Nelson
august 2017 Southwest 59
F1_larry_DE.indd 59
7/11/17 2:04 PM
Here’s Larry Nelson on the 10th tee box at Fallen Oak Golf Club outside Biloxi, Mississippi. He’s a hint under 5-foot-9 and still lean at 69, with jade green eyes and a white cap pulled over the hairline a fellow player once affectionately described as “that cue ball up there.” he’s leaning on his driver, his right forearm draped across the grip of the club, almost like he’s reclining while standing up. Amidst the hive of tournament officials and sponsors buzzing around the tee box, he fades into the background. It’s an unseasonably hot March afternoon, the opening round of the Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic, an annual stop on the PGA Tour Champions, known colloquially as the senior tour. Seventy-nine players are here, including some of the biggest names in golf, and one of the leading fan draws this weekend happens to be first up in Larry’s grouping. Tom Kite, in his trademark straw hat and thickset glasses, plants a tee in the ground and steps back for a series of practice swings, a Harrah’s Gulf Coast banner waving behind him. The announcer addresses the gallery that’s gathered three-deep around the tee box. “Please welcome World Golf Hall of Famer Tom Kite!” Cheers erupt, the crowd control official raises a “HUSH Y’ALL” sign, and he lines up his shot. As soon as he makes contact, someone hollers, “Good ball, Tom!”
The ball fades toward the rough. Larry, the last in his group to tee off, steps up and readies for his shot, no-nonsense, taking just one practice swing. “Please welcome World Golf Hall of Famer—” the announcer begins, then pauses, shaking his head, visibly flustered. He frantically searches the pockets of his navy blazer before digging out his lineup card. “Uh, I’m sorry,” he stutters, scanning the list of names. “Larry Nelson.” Larry turns to the crowd, grins, and tips his cap, eliciting chuckles. Then he pivots back to the ball, smacks it straight down the fairway—outdriving the others —and strolls off. The crowd lingers, watching him march away. He’s one of just four Hall of Famers among the field. So why do so few people know his name?
LARRY COULD TELL a lot by the sound of a bullet. Rounds from carbine rifles whistled as they passed overhead, so he knew he’d met with the Viet Cong. AK47s, on the other hand, cracked like a whip,

signaling a visit with the North Vietnamese Army. He had touched down at Chu Lai Combat Base in central Vietnam in March 1968, during the throes of the Tet Offensive, and he was promptly told that hundreds of soldiers from his Army regiment had been killed or wounded in the previous 90 days. He was one of the few soldiers who could read a map—as a boy growing up in rural Georgia, he often spent entire days by himself navigating creeks and backwoods—so his infantry squad always ran point. The position was dreaded by some, but Larry preferred it that way. The Viet Cong and NVA typically waited to appraise the size of the entire outfit before opening fire. As an A-team infantry squad leader, he was responsible for nine men during their nightly jungle ambushes. Their primary mission was to draw fire —thus his familiarity with the sound of bullets— and then they’d call in the artillery. Because of booby traps and snipers, he tended to avoid trails and rice paddy dikes, which often drew the ire of his squad—the jungle was much slower going and rife with land leeches—but he never lost a man. They’d set off an hour before sunset and hunker down once darkness set in, digging foxholes and staying two to a hole, one person sleeping while the other kept watch. One night, his squad burrowed down 15 yards off a trail, and an entire company marched right by them. For the better part of an hour, Larry stifled the sound of his own breath, terrified that someone in his squad would startle awake and give away their position. But for the most part, he was more fearful for what was happening back home. During the three months he was stationed in Vietnam, both Martin
Luther King Jr. and Bobby Kennedy were assassinated, and seemingly every time a helicopter arrived at base camp to drop off supplies and rations, it also brought more news of protest and unrest. He wrote letters to his wife, Gayle, whom he’d met when he was 5, on the box tops of those C-rations, keeping her abreast of his day-to-day, not giving too many specifics so as not to worry her. In return, she would send Kool-Aid packages to cut the bitter taste of his quinine water. When his tour ended, he returned home to Acworth, Georgia. He got a job at the local Lockheed Martin factory, working 10-hour shifts seven days a week, and enrolled in three night classes at a junior college. The schedule left him exhausted. One day after work, he staggered out of the concrete tunnel that led to the factory and, with a few hours to kill before class, decided to pull into the driving range across the street. He’d never played golf—always thought it was a “sissy sport”—but he remembered one night during basic training when a buddy raved about the game while they played poker. “He hadn’t shaved for about two weeks and he hadn’t bathed in longer than that and he had an M16, and I didn’t want to tell him what I thought about golf,” Larry once said. He preferred baseball, but he’d thrown out his arm and needed another outlet. (He was fortunate not to suffer from as much trauma as many of his fellow veterans, but even still: In the months after returning home, while out with a friend, he once lunged to the ground after hearing a loud boom; another time, his wife playfully startled him at home and he had to refrain from reflexively attacking her.) He grabbed a bucket of balls and an aluminum driver, and at first his only aim was to wallop a few over the fence. But he found it therapeutic, the rhythm of the swing and the pure sensation of solid contact and the isolation of it all. He made a habit of it over time, stopping by after a

long day at work. It wasn’t long before he was driving the ball farther than the others on the range, and straighter, too. It was still another year before he played with any seriousness—or with any club other than a driver. He quit Lockheed to finish school, and to fill his free time every day until his wife got home from work, he purchased a discount membership at nearby Pinetree Country Club. He was nearly 23. When Larry was a kid, he would often spend time by himself, seeking out new fishing holes or lying in a field of sage for hours and gazing at the clouds passing overhead. The solitary nature of
golf suited him, and he was rewarded with steady improvement. “I think that is what’s good about the game, whether you’re coming back out of a war zone or an office,” he says. “No matter how many people are out there, it’s still just you, the golf club, and the golf ball, trying to get it where you want it to go.” The club pro, Bert Seagraves, recommended he pick up a copy of Ben Hogan’s Five Lessons: The Modern Fundamentals of Golf. Larry studied the book and, with occasional tips from Bert, shot under par within a year. Other members began taking notice. One of them, Chet Austin, never forgot the first time he saw Larry and his wife at the course. “He and Gayle came driving up to the tee,” Austin told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution in 2006. “And when I saw him hit the ball as far as he could for a man his size, I thought, Woooo-wee. That got my attention.” Bert brought him on as an assistant in 1970, which meant that, although Larry spent more time at the course, he only had limited windows of practice time. He often played at dawn before the members arrived, and in the afternoons, he would hit balls out of a ditch in the driving range using one arm. After a few years, he was considering taking another job because he couldn’t support a family on his assistant’s salary. Instead, a group of five Pinetree members, including Chet Austin, pooled together enough money ($10,000) to send him to Tampa, Florida, to play the professional mini-tours. Surprised, he went home and told Gayle. She was supportive, but Larry was hesitant. He’d seen professional players come through Pinetree every now and then, and he was enamored with them, but the notion of playing golf for a living still seemed far-fetched. Then he talked to Bert. “You’ve got to do this,” Bert told him, “because if you don’t, you’ll always regret it.” In the fall of 1972, they packed all their

were young; Larry thought it just seemed like a great way to make a living. On his final hole, needing par to tie for 22nd, he lofted an 8-iron over the pond fronting the green, and then calmly twoputted. Just a few years after hitting that aluminum driver for the first time, he became one of two people to ever qualify for the PGA Tour after picking up the game in their 20s.
IN TEAM SPORTS, there are arguments belongings into a brown Chevy Monte Carlo and drove to Tampa. Among the 120 players on the mini-tour, some were college All-Americans. Larry had yet to play an actual tournament. People were baffled to learn that he hadn’t competed in high school or college, but he didn’t play well enough early on that anyone was impressed by that fact. During his first few tournaments, he committed several violations because he didn’t know the rules. Once, after hitting his ball into a hazard, he started removing leaves and sticks, and then asked another guy in his group whether it’d be a penalty if the ball moved. “You’ve moved so many things already, you’re lying 12,” he told Larry, incredulous. Leading up to the 1973 PGA Tour Qualifying Tournament—or Q-School, as golf’s most notoriously pressure-filled event is known—all the hype surrounded a young player named Ben Crenshaw, who’d won three national championships at the University of Texas and had already landed on the covers of several golf magazines. While Crenshaw dominated the tournament (he would go on to win his first event immediately afterward), nobody paid much attention to the guy who’d only started playing 16 months earlier. To earn his PGA Tour card, Larry needed to finish in the top 25; otherwise, he’d have to wait to try again next year. Yet nerves never really got to him. Most of the others had dreamed about this opportunity since they
to be had over how to define individual success, about what it means to be great. When athletes must rely on the teammates surrounding them, wins and losses are inarguably impacted by significant forces outside of their control. Still, as a sports-obsessed culture, we seem to have reached a consensus that greatness is not only defined by wins and losses, but by championships. In golf, there is little debate to be had. Part of the game’s magnetism is the black-and-white clarity of its individual storylines. The year that Larry qualified for the PGA Tour, Arnold Palmer won his 62nd and final PGA tournament; seven of his wins were major championships. Jack Nicklaus retired with 73 PGA Tour wins, 18 of which were majors. The reason that Nicklaus’ anointment as the greatest of all time goes unchallenged has little to do with those 11 extra wins overall and everything to do with his performance in the majors. For his first few years on tour, Larry defined success by whether he made enough money to provide for his family. His first 10 tournaments in 1974, the year after qualifying for the tour, he didn’t make a single cut, thus failing to earn a penny of prize money. At the time, only a few players earned sponsorships, and everyone had to pay for their own rental car, lunch at the clubhouse, and even golf balls at the driving range. He was

thrilled to be sharing a locker room with Nicklaus and Palmer, but with no winnings to his name and travel costs stacking up, the financial reality was self-evident. His 11th tournament, though, he managed an eighth-place finish, and a check arrived in the amount of $3,800—just $300 more than he needed to retain his PGA card for the next year. For a few years, he managed to continue playing golf for a living. In 1978, however, he revamped his practice routine—he was a natural off the tee box and with his irons, but his short game was dreadful— to emphasize chipping, bunker play, and putting. The next year he won two tournaments, finished second on the money list, and earned one of 12 coveted spots in the Ryder Cup, the biennial team competition between Europe and the United States. The international rivalry creates a singular intensity of pressure, and its drama stems from the possibility that even the steadiest players are prone to faltering. Larry thrived, becoming the only player to go 5-0 in Ryder Cup history. “Having to make a 15-foot putt, it’s not like having someone shoot at you,” he says. “It’s not life or death, so you can approach it a lot differently.” Still, he didn’t come close to claiming a major victory until the 1981 PGA Championship at Atlanta Athletic Club, 45 minutes from his home. He was 33 at the time, and five weeks earlier, he was struggling with a bad back and playing so poorly that he took a month off and spent time fishing with his sons, Drew, 4, and Josh, 2. He got off to a disastrous start, but a rain delay offered the chance to fix his putting; after three rounds, he captured a four-shot lead. Most any player will tell you that holding a lead in a major makes for a torturous Saturday evening and Sunday morning— the stress has led to many legendary final round
collapses. As for Larry, he drove home and played soccer with Drew. Newspaper columnists went on to complain that his Sunday round lacked drama—Larry described it at the time as “aggressively conservative.” On the 18th hole, still ahead by four strokes, he actually took the time to count in his head how many times he could hit into the pond and still win. There was no need. A 6-iron left him 20 feet from the hole, and after a steady two-putt, he tipped his Amana hat (the appliance company paid him $50 a week to wear it) to the crowd. He hugged Gayle and then threw his Hogan brand golf ball into the gallery. Finally, he embraced his first teacher, Bert Seagraves, who’d driven in to watch. “I’m about as excited as I’ve ever been in my life,” he told a Washington Post reporter. And then, when asked how he planned to celebrate, Larry responded with characteristic understatement, “I’m going [to] take a hot bath.”
IT WAS A MONDAY MORNING in 1983 when Larry stepped onto the 16th green at Oakmont Country Club. Rain had delayed the final round of the U.S. Open, and so he and Tom Watson and Seve Ballesteros returned the next day to finish the remaining three holes. The night before, in addition to playing Pong on the Atari with his sons, Larry had mapped out every shot he was

going to hit, but there was no accounting for this: a 62-foot putt on the fastest green he’d ever played. Once again, he was playing poorly coming into the tournament, and when he flew in to practice the course on Monday, his clubs didn’t arrive with him. He borrowed a putter from the clubhouse and stayed on the putting green instead. He’d always loathed practicing putting, but here it paid off. When that 62-foot putt rolled in for birdie, Larry, in a rare display of emotion, ran after it. Roars from the crowd could be heard on the opposite side of the course. Watson bogeyed the next hole, and Larry captured the U.S. Open by one stroke. His biggest endorsement contract, $6,000, was for playing Ben Hogan Golf Equipment clubs, and after that season—he’d won two majors and was still undefeated in the Ryder Cup—his contract was cut in half. There was never an explanation. After winning his first major, people were hesitant to celebrate him. “It was like it was so unusual, people didn’t embrace it,” he says. Winning his second didn’t seem to change the perception. Neither did his third. In the summer of ’87, on the hottest Aug. 9 in the history of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, Larry beat Lanny Wadkins in a sudden death playoff for the PGA Championship. He started the day three

strokes back, but the rest of the field faltered in the sultry spell. (When a reporter later asked how he was able to handle the heat, Larry shrugged. “Well, I guess it was hotter in Vietnam.”) When his winning putt dropped, the diminished crowd cheered out of relief as much as excitement. But the achievement was momentous. He joined Nicklaus, Watson, and Ballesteros as the only players to win three major championships in the ’80s. Today, there are only two active American players on the PGA Tour that have won more than two majors. Larry won more than Ben Crenshaw, Tom Kite, and Greg Norman. “You win three, you’re a golfer not for this year or this decade but for the ages,” columnist Mark Bradley wrote afterward in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “Larry Nelson, the man from Marietta, has won three. He got his third Sunday, winning the PGA. Maybe this time somebody will notice.” To celebrate, Larry took his family to Wendy’s.
IT HAS BEEN EXACTLY 30 years since Larry accomplished that remarkable feat, and still it seems that no one has noticed. Perhaps corporations were wary of selling his story because Vietnam was a politically disastrous war. “If it had been today, I would’ve been America’s hero,” Larry says. Perhaps the traditional golf powers were reticent to celebrate him for fear he confirmed what many already think when they turn on the tube and watch these guys whacking a little white ball across a finely pruned field: I could do that. Larry picked up a club and actually did it. Or perhaps it was simply bad timing. For much of the ’80s and well into the ’90s, golf’s senior tour attracted much larger crowds than the PGA Tour. Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer remained the game’s biggest names, and they drew in the majority of golf’s relatively small viewership. As Larry approached 50, it appeared he might finally get his due. He’d now been playing for nearly three decades, and his relative youth was advantageous. In anticipation, companies started approaching him with big endorsement deals. But in 1997, the year of his 50th birthday—the same year he was passed over as Ryder Cup captain despite being promised the job—he happened to be paired in a tournament with a player named CONTINUED ON PAGE 70

Tiger Woods, who was kicking off his rookie season. Larry had competed against young, hugely hyped players before, but this was a different sort of phenomenon—it was the largest crowd he’d ever seen. Larry would go on to win player of the year on the Champions Tour, but by the time of his birthday that fall, the economics of golf had been transformed. The PGA Tour became exponentially more lucrative, and as for the Champions Tour, if Tiger wasn’t on, people simply didn’t tune in. Larry turns 70 next month. He still plays roughly 10 tournaments a year, and his sons caddy for him whenever they can. He’s no threat to win, but he likes to challenge himself—he still aims to finish in the top 10 once a year. And he recently invented a tool to practice swing mechanics at home without clubs—no experience required, of course. During his World Golf Hall of Fame induction speech in 2006, he told a story about his dad, who had passed away the year before. “My father never played golf until he was 50,” Larry told the crowd. “One year I had played in the Atlanta Classic and missed the cut by 10 shots, and we were driving home. My dad said, ‘Son, I don’t know much about golf, but if I were you, I’d try to get it closer to where those flags are.’” Sitting in the front row were Nicklaus and Palmer, there to welcome him into golf’s most exclusive club. But even more meaningful were the two airplanes filled with family and friends,
including Bert Seagraves, who traveled in for the ceremony. For his display case, Larry chose to include the field jacket he wore as a 140-pound sergeant in Vietnam in addition to his Bible and photos of loved ones. At the Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic in Biloxi this March, he went out of his way to make sure the scorekeepers had plenty of water. He talked to any fans following his group to ensure they were having a good day. When everyone else walked by a turtle inching across a cart path, Larry paused. “Hey, big boy,” he said, picking him up and carrying him over to a stream. On the next to last hole, talking to his son Drew about his struggles on the back nine, he paused and grinned. “Just nervous I guess. Hadn’t been doing this long enough.” JK Nickell is a features editor at Texas Monthly and a former editor at this magazine. Share your own golf tales with him at jknickell@yahoo.com.

career, she’d realized that although she was giving something to the viewer, she was also taking something away by directing them into what she was about. She’d rather leave things open and unknown. She was a person who said “wow” a lot, and she wanted to leave room for people to have their own “wow” moments. And for that you needed space. You needed to leave the story unfinished. rose-lynn had moved into her mother’s home recently. Her things were mostly unpacked, but not fully. This, too, concerned her. “It’s like having someone over in my bathrobe,” she said. “It’s like being laid bare.” She was hesitant to take me through the process of even looking at the landscapes on the tear slides—much less selecting—because it wouldn’t be true, because I would be there, watching. And later, she told me she didn’t want to describe the process of capturing a tear, mounting it on the slide, drying it. It was too mechanical, or awkward, or anyway—it would take people away from the art. Another image, a whole set, Rose-Lynn titled “In the end it didn’t matter.” These all came from a moment that had been frustrating and unfulfilling. She took the tear, marked the slide with a time and a phrase (it was about someone, but she didn’t want to say who or what), and forgot about it for years until her anger and frustration subsided and she no longer wanted anything from this person or expected anything from the slide. And—wow!—it turned out the slide contained everything. It was filled with images, interesting lines and patterns, joyful and playful and strange. “It was kind of a joke on me,” she said. She made about 30 photos from that one slide, and whittled and whittled them down to a series of five. In the end, it didn’t matter: a joke on herself in five parts.
7/3/17 3:27 PM
Another, called “Go!”, is also about a passing, about someone Rose-Lynn had a deep appreciation for. “The spirit of this person was so big and free,” she said. When she got word he had died, she cried, and in her tear found this bubble, almost like a spirit or a balloon lifting off, and she thought, Go! Not like go away. “A good go.” A thrust of life, an escape, bursting out within the tear. “Go!” There was a synchronicity, she said, a serendipity to the whole process, like recognizing the root of a feeling within the image, but—she hesitated. It was all so irrational. Explaining it too exactly could be dangerous. The onion tears were more intentional, scientific even—sulfuric acid in an onion makes one weep— but Rose-Lynn still had questions, like: Would all her onion tears look the same, seeing as they were brought on by the same chemical process? They did not. Some onion tears appeared fern-like, some more crystalline. How could one be curved and the other gridded—a Minneapolis and a Los Angeles— both caused by the same chemical? It mystified her. She contacted a scientist who studied tears, a biochemist named William Frey who had coauthored a book called Crying: The Mystery of Tears. Frey told Rose-Lynn about how, chemically, our emotional tears are distinct from tears that come from eye irritations. Also, the tear glands in women and men are anatomically distinct. Women cry more often than men, and women produce more tears when they cry. But the most intriguing thing Frey told Rose-Lynn was that crying in response to heightened emotions is not only useful from an evolutionary perspective, but likely good for health. Crying is a stress reliever, and unrelieved stress can hasten heart disease and kill brain cells, and has even been linked to early onset Alzheimer’s. Crying helps us survive. Rose-Lynn still had questions, but she realized her tendency to
F1_tears_kdm.indd 73
want to figure out the meaning behind the different patterns and landscapes inside the tears, a deeply human instinct, was also misguided. We’re drawn to connections. We want tidy endings to our stories and answers to our questions. If she’d learned anything over the eight years the project spanned, it wasn’t that a happy tear and a sad tear might look different. In fact, Frey told her that deducting the visual meaning of the salt and mineral structures within dried tears would be nearly impossible. Just think of the experiment: a lot of people crying over the exact same things for the exact same reasons. Even if you could draw up the circumstances and overcome the liability laws, you’d still be prescribing the reasons for the tears using words. And words are limiting, nothing but blunt instruments we’ve invented in an attempt to describe a whole universe of interior feelings—the stuff we call emotions, an intellectual, chemical process, reduced to terms like sadness and anger and love. The science wasn’t there; words came up short. It was all deeply imperfect, like us. It was all eventually unanswerable. in 2014, rose-lynn began showing the photographs of her tears in galleries all over the world. In France, a manufacturer from Chantilly took the patterns from one image and turned it into lace, a fabric, they noted, so often twinned with weeping—on brides, in funerals. An architectural firm also became fascinated by the patterns, drawing on them for inspiration in a project about water. People wanted to take these tiny structures and make them very large. In her mother’s home—now her home—Rose-Lynn kept a stack of aerial photographs near some of the work. It was eerie how similar the landscapes appeared, one huge, one tiny. What she had, she realized, was an ephemeral atlas, a series of maps to places that didn’t

exist. Maps to the interior. From the very start, she’d called her series The Topography of Tears. Next to the aerial photos was one tear photo in particular, “Grief and gratitude.” This was the first tear. It had come after the loss of a friend, an artist, who had nursed her back to health in Italy many years before. “He had probably saved my life, and we had stayed in touch, and then I lost him. I thought: He’s old. I have to make sure he knows how much he meant, how much he mattered, how thankful I’ve been.” She tracked down his number and arranged a visit. Decades had passed, yet “it was this continuum of friendship, of time and connection. Everything got said. Everything that needed to be. It was very whole. And then he died. I cried. I cried for losing him but mostly for having found him again.” When she looked back at the very beginning, she could see her artist friend in that photograph. Not him, exactly, but his creative impulse, his curiosity and playfulness and largeness of heart. There was a sense that the photograph and patterns could reach back beyond time. There was another photo she made from that first tear, too. This one she titled “Timeless reunion in an expanding field.” She got very quiet talking about these first photographs. The house was very still. Outside, the gridded streets of the San Fernando Valley were hot and white with late spring midday light. On the wall, behind the table where the photographs were piled, was a massive, rolling, geometric painting—one of RoseLynn’s, too. An older work. She had begun moving on from the tears, started searching for other long-term projects. Kelp was something that intrigued her, its dried shapes washed ashore on a certain beach with bone white sand. But she was still dwelling on the tears. In a few days, a book of the work, named after the series, would come out, and more exhibitions, further

opportunities for the finished work to be seen. If there was one thing she’d learned through this whole, tearful period, she said, it was to abide in the unknowable. She paused for a while. “You’re trying to bring words through into something that’s wordless, trying to describe something that exists perfectly well on its own. The thing with crying is that so often the very power of that moment is precisely because you can’t talk. There aren’t words with it. It’s something that’s so direct. And then, all of a sudden, there’s a release, like after a storm. The air is clearer. You feel the hair on your arms lift.” Those moments after tears, the wonder of those moments, that’s what her photographs captured. After tears, she’d realized that it was OK, good even, “to end on a question, but the question can be different for you and me. Maybe it’s, ‘Is it finished?’ Or, ‘How do I want to say this?’ Or, ‘What is my story in this tear?’” Like a real map, her topographies lead people back to places they’ve long forgotten, or places they’ve never been. Like an explorer, between the discovery of this landscape and her presentation of it, Rose-Lynn has spent her time charting a course, a way for us to navigate, to see. Before leaving her alone in her mother’s house, I had asked RoseLynn something else, but she said she was talked out for the day and needed some time to rest. We could talk again, of course, but later. Only, when we did eventually speak again, I’d forgotten what I’d wanted to ask. “What was it?” she urged on the phone, trying to help me remember. “Was it something about where things begin and end?”

At the heart of New Mexico beats the pulse of a thriving city. In Albuquerque, diverse cultures, authentic art, and vibrant traditions have helped shape its centuries-old story. The city’s one-of-a-kind cuisine, rich cultural tapestry, and abundance of open space have the power to change perspectives. A metropolis in the high desert, Albuquerque is located in the Rio Grande Valley, nestled between the towering Sandia Mountains to the east and ancient volcanoes to the west. With a mild climate, breathtaking landscape, stunning sunsets, and 310 days of sunshine each year, the city is a true gem of the Southwest. Founded in 1706, Albuquerque boasts a dynamic multicultural history where Native American, Hispanic, Latino, Anglo, and other cultural influences are reflected. Nowhere is the confluence of past and present more dramatic than here, where the modern city

WHEN WE MEET, WE CHANGE THE WORLD
Those seven words have become the inspiration for the power of face-to-face meetings and their immense global economic impact, and the numbers, quite simply, are staggering. About $280 billion is contributed annually to the U.S. economy from meetings and events. Globally, the numbers are even more impressive. Live events drive massive economic returns and job growth, with nearly $700 billion spent globally in annual direct meeting and event expenditures. With about 1.8 million meetings and events occurring each year in the U.S., there’s probably a good chance that you, or the person sitting next to you on this airplane, is on their way to a meeting or an
event, and that speaks to the power and impact of face-to-face meetings. “When We Meet, We Change the World is core to our purpose,” said Paul Van Deventer, president and CEO of Meeting Professionals International, the world’s largest meeting and event industry association. “It’s the inspiration for the work that we do and the output of all of our efforts. “Face-to-face meetings drive innovation, change political discourse, stimulate economic
development and for me, most importantly, they enhance cultural understanding and awareness,” added Van Deventer, who also serves as co-chair of the Meetings Mean Business coalition, created in 2009 by the U.S. Travel Association to showcase the value of business meetings, travel and events. Comprised of more than 50 members, the coalition unites the meeting industry with one strong and powerful voice. The meeting industry economic engine contributes more to U.S.

gross domestic product than the air transportation, motion picture, sound recording, performing arts or spectator sport industries. According to a study commissioned by the Events Industry Council and research by PricewaterhouseCoopers, the meeting industry contribution of more than $280 billion to the U.S. economy resulted in a direct contribution to the GDP of about $115 billion. The industry employs about 5.3 million jobs. An Oxford Economics report highlights the industry’s value to businesses, fi nding that companies that invested more in business travel during the economic downturn grew the fastest. For example: • Every dollar invested in business travel realizes $9.50 in new revenue and produces $2.90 in profits. • Business travelers reported that they are nearly twice as likely to convert prospects into customers with an in-person meeting than without one. • More than two-in-five (42%) executives stated that they would lose their customers without face-toface meetings. Not only do meetings and events deliver profits, they help win new accounts, serve as education platforms, allow colleagues and partners to come together to innovate and achieve results. Conventions and conferences are key components for developing advanced skills and workforce training while the ability to sit down one-on-one with colleagues and leaders across industries provides for instant collaboration and real-time productivity. Yet, the industry is facing challenges from potential discriminatory legislation, global terrorism and “ironically by misplaced reaction by some to the threat of terrorism,” Van Deventer said at MPI’s World Education Congress in June in Las Vegas. “Face to face meetings drive innovation, political advancement and economic growth,” he said. “These threats to the free flow of
people limit the effectiveness of live events and thereby stifle innovation and progress driven by our industry. If we can’t meet, we can’t facilitate change and we can’t facilitate advancement.” Another threat to the industry is the potential elimination from the federal budget of Brand USA, a federally funded organization that promotes the country overseas as a tourist destination. “With all that’s going on in the world, unilaterally disarming the marketing of the U.S. as a travel destination would be to surrender market share at the worst possible time,” said Roger Dow, U.S. Travel Association president and CEO. “The agency was responsible for adding $8.9 billion to the U.S. economy last year … a 28-to-1 return on investment.” When people meet face-to-face, relationships are developed in a way that technology cannot recreate or match. The ability to look a new business prospect in the eye and close the deal with a handshake simply cannot be replicated. MPI’s annual conference—the 2018 meeting is in Indianapolis—is just one of the many times industry professionals gather for education, business exchanges and networking in the U.S. and internationally. The IMEX Group, the worldwide exhibition juggernaut for incetive travel, meetings and events, brings its trade show and hosted buyer program to Las Vegas in October and is expected to draw more than 12,000 total participants, including 3,200 hosted buyers from 60 countries. Face-to-face meetings more effectively capture the attention of participants, inspire positive emotional climates and drive collaboration by building meaningful business relationships. Meetings create a shared sense of mission and purpose, foster
empathy across organizational lines and create camaraderie that positions an organization for success. “Without meetings to think about the issues we face, we would not know where to start,” said Greg Clark, an urbanist, author and global advisor. “Everything begins with a meeting.” Brian Stevens, chair of MPI’s International Board of Directors and CEO of ConferenceDirect, touted the value of meetings and events and the power of relationships in this way: “Stop tapping smartphones and look into each other’s eyes,” he said. “I never sold a meeting over email. It happens face-to-face. Friends do business with friends.” Rich Luna is the Director of Publishing at Meeting Professionals International. Swim, boat, hike, fish and enjoy historical sites like Fort Caroline National Memorial and Kingsley Plantation, Florida’s last remaining Plantationera house. All year long, from January to December, there is something exciting to do in Jacksonville. Come explore!

PRIORITIZING REALWORLD EXPERIENCE The Center for Experiential Learning and Career Success at Trinity University in San Antonio emphasizes hands-on experience. In an effort to better prepare students to enter the workforce, the university creates learning opportunities through internships, undergraduate research, course projects, and community service and service learning. As a result, Trinity students can round out their classroom education by diving into their areas of study in challenging environments. “There is something about experi-
encing that which you are studying that makes it so much more alive,” says professor and director of experiential learning Jacob Tingle. Tingle, an alumnus of Trinity, leads a study abroad program in London that explores the British and American sport systems. Together, students on both sides of the pond learn about the political, economic, social, and cultural forces that influence and differentiate each country’s model through interaction and engagement with iconic British sport venues like Wembley Stadium.
“I firmly hold that learning takes place not only through traditional methods such as reading, writing, and testing, but often the most impactful learning takes place through doing,” says Tingle, adding that he believes an educator’s role is as both an expert and a facilitator. “I am convinced that the most effective teachers—the ones who truly engage and connect with students—are those who make learning real.”

PROVIDING RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES Research is a byword at Creighton University, a prestigious Jesuit university in Omaha, Nebraska. In 2013, Creighton took its programs to new heights by establishing the Center for Undergraduate Research and Scholarship (CURAS). Hundreds of students now engage in research projects each year across disciplines including arts and sciences, law and business, medical research, interdisciplinary health sciences, policy research, biomedical science, neuroscience, and economics. “As early as their freshman year, many of our undergradu-
ate students conduct hands-on research through CURAS,” says Creighton’s director of admissions and scholarships Sarah Richardson. “Providing that opportunity is something our university takes quite seriously, and it’s proven to be a differentiator when high school students are narrowing down their college choices.” Students looking for hands-on learning in a challenging and rewarding environment will appreciate the training, programming, and one-on-one mentorships with Creighton faculty. “It’s an opportunity to explore differ-
ent passions, discover something new, and contribute to a field of knowledge,” says CURAS director Juliane Strauss-Soukup, Ph.D. “It’s a uniquely collaborative and enriching experience.” Roughly 32 percent of Creighton’s undergraduates participate in undergraduate research or scholarly work, and nearly 200 students present their findings at national and regional scholarly conferences each year. Creighton University flies high with excellence. Ranked No. 1 in the Midwest for 14 years in a row, Creighton University delivers a tradition of academic distinction. Nationally, Creighton is the only Catholic university among 36 universities recognized for an extraordinary commitment to undergraduate research. Within nine months of graduation, 99% of our alumni are enrolled in graduate studies or employed and earning salaries competitive to national averages. It’s clear: Creighton is invested in the lifelong success of its students.

FOSTERING COLLABORATION Balancing personal and professional duties can be overwhelming, but Auburn University in Alabama offers an executive MBA program tailored to busy, career-driven individuals. Their comprehensive program assists with hotel stays, most meals, books and supplies, and residency enrollment to make the entire process run smoothly. “The lines between professional and personal time are becoming blurred and the thought of adding graduate study on top of those demands can seem quite daunting. Our blended program was designed to make it a possibility,” executive director Kim Kuerten says. “We work diligently to take care of the details—from the fi rst inquiry and admission process to selecting a course of study and graduating—so

the student can focus on learning.” Coinciding with the 50th anniversary of Auburn’s school of business, the university will also break ground on a new building this year that will house graduate programs, as well as provide more collaborative spaces for business programming. The nearly 100,000-square-foot facility will feature state-of-the-art technology, an “Innovation Lab,” adaptable classroom spaces with moveable walls, and an auditorium with adjustable seating configurations. The new space is made possible with an alumni gift from Raymond J. Harbert, a longstanding supporter of the school. Projected to be completed for fall 2018 classes, this innovative building symbolizes Auburn’s continued investment in its business programs.

ENSURING FUTURE SUCCESS Oklahoma State University
The Ph.D. in Business for Executives program at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater allows busy professionals to earn a Ph.D., which concentrates on research and academia, rather than a D.B.A. Students pursuing this advanced degree travel to campus 10 times each year for three days of courses rather than attending class regularly throughout the semester. Oklahoma State developed this program to bridge the gap between academia and industry. Graduates with this specialized degree go beyond simply applying current best practices—they teach and conduct research at top universities, and create the best practices of tomorrow.
“Our Executive Ph.D. program is designed to equip our graduates to return to their companies and make those organizations more successful by making datadriven decisions,” says director of executive doctoral programs Toby Joplin, Ph.D., noting that it has also opened other doors for students. “An interesting thing has happened. As we graduated our first three cohorts, many are being recruited by universities for jobs in academia, often at research universities, and even in tenure track positions.”

if you didn’t work in film, what would you be doing?

I would probably exclusively be a mom. It’s a very noble job to be a parent, and I learned that when I had my kids. When people say, “Oh, you know, I’m just a stay-at-home mom.” I’m like, “Power to you, because that job is no joke.” That said, the great thing about this hypothetical question is I don’t have to make that decision. I am a writer, actor, director, and producer, but also a mother and a wife. I get to choose all of those.

SIT TO FLY.
STAND TO WORK. Sitting hunched over for hours is no way to work –and it can lead to real health issues. But VARIDESK lets you stand and move, which can increase health and productivity, while helping reduce back pain.* There’s no assembly, no installation, and no reason not to try VARIDESK in your office. ®
