Gary’s Greeting
During my 30-year career in the airline industry, one thing I’ve come to count on is that this business is predictably unpredictable. There are so many external factors that can affect our business, many of which are beyond our control: the economy, energy prices, world events, Mother Nature, and even political relationships between sovereign nations. Case in point—if you would have told me on January 1st that we would launch service to Cuba in 2016, with Havana marking our 100th destination, I would have thought you were nuts. However, before the end of the year, we will offer service to two Cuban destinations
(Varadero and Havana). This was made possible by the United States government lifting travel restrictions to Cuba after more than 50 years. Southwest bid on the opportunity to serve these Cuban markets, which were subsequently awarded by the U.S. Department of Transportation. This was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that was not considered a realistic possibility back in January. I’m proud of our Company for being nimble enough to capitalize on this new opportunity, and I’m beyond impressed with our Employees for acting quickly and diligently to make it happen on short notice.
Earlier this year, we launched service to Long Beach Airport in Southern California. Long Beach marks our fifth Greater Los Angeles area airport and 10th California market, helping us provide more low-fare service to our California Customers and anyone heading west. We’ve made tremendous progress on several other fronts this year by introducing new uniforms for our Employees and a new cabin interior (including new seats!) for our Customers. You’ll see those updates gradually phase into our fleet over the next several years. One of our biggest ongoing projects is one not visible to our Customers: implementing a new reservation system. The reservation system is the backbone of an airline and supports just about every function our Employees perform. It’s a massive undertaking that will give us more tools and capabilities to continue offering our Customers added value and convenience. It’s a game-changer! In a world of uncertainty, I hope it brings you comfort that there are some things you can always count on from your favorite airline—low fares with no hidden fees to the places you want to fly, with warm Hospitality delivered by the very best Employees in the world. Thanks for flying with us, and happy holidays!

We started UNTUCKit because we had trouble finding shirts that looked good untucked. It’s a deceptively difficult look to get right. Shirts just aren’t designed that way. So we decided to make a better shirt for the untucked man. A casual shirt fit for comfort, not convention, and designed to fall at the perfect length.

“If you’re doing something you don’t want to do, go do something else—right now.” —WILL PEMBLE, CEO, GOALBOSS.ME
Although Will Pemble doesn’t call himself a businessman, his success says otherwise. An entrepreneur for more than 25 years, Will built and sold the web hosting site web.com. But despite being an internet pioneer, he insists there’s no substitute for connecting face-to-face. Thankfully, Southwest makes it easy for Will to meet clients and, more importantly, to see his wife and kids at the end of the day. He believes life is about having fun, which explains the 180-foot roller coaster he built with his son in his San Francisco backyard. Will’s enthusiasm for combining work and play is tough to match, but our Employees are up for the challenge! —Ashley Bradstreet, Communication & Outreach AIM HIGH “As an executive coach, I help people achieve goals. Southwest supports children’s charities through LUV Classic golf tournament. Southwest Airlines has always been passionate about making a positive difference in the communities we serve, and this October we hit a hole in one with the 31st Annual LUV Classic and Party. Thanks to the spirited participation of our Employees and sponsors, Southwest donated $625,000 to children’s charities. For three decades, LUV Classic has been dedicated to giving back to our Customers and communities by supporting charities that directly improve the health and well-being of children. Funds donated from the 2016 golf tournament, held in Farmers Branch, Texas, benefited Children’s Hospital Colorado, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, Knights of Heroes Foundation, and Ronald McDonald House Charities.
A national and international leader in pediatric health, Children’s Hospital Colorado has been a partner of Southwest’s Medical Grant Transportation Program since 2010. Likewise, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, which serves 111,000 patients annually, has been a partner of Southwest’s MGTP since 2011. A Southwest military partner since 2008, the Knights of Heroes Foundation empowers children who have lost a parent during military service by organizing an annual wilderness adventure camp. Since 1974, Ronald McDonald House Charities has created programs that provide vital resources and compassionate care to children and their families being served by hospitals worldwide. Since the first LUV Classic, Southwest has donated more than $16 million to various children’s charities, and we know these four deserving organizations will continue their meaningful work using the funds they received in 2016. —Lori Skinner, Community Programs

Heart of the Community
GAME ON
Building Resilient Futures Together
Southwest Airlines unites communities, both in the air and in your backyard. We have a lot to be proud of after a busy 2016. Thanks to Southwest’s Heart of the Community grants, 18 placemaking projects are reimagining public spaces in the U.S. and Mexico. No matter how different each project is, one key theme remains the same: It’s not just about making a place—it’s about improving the quality of life for the surrounding community. Every day, we connect people in any way we can. This passion is, and always will be, at the core of who Southwest is as a Company. A decline in community participation can hold us back from working together effectively. That’s why in 2017 we’re continuing the Heart of the Community mission to build a more resilient future by strengthening communities and connecting more people. We know that communities thrive when they are resilient, collaborative, and well-connected. We are
committed to ensuring that communities across the country have the necessary tools and support to build this type of place. And we know where to start. Through our ongoing work with Project for Public Spaces, we’ve learned that public spaces are where connections are made. Parks, community gardens, libraries, and downtown squares are truly the hearts of the communities our People call home and the spaces our Customers love to visit. Through Heart of the Community, we will continue to invest in the power of placemaking and embrace other building blocks of community resilience to help communities thrive—both now and in the future. We invite you to join us as a local connector in any way you can, from introducing yourself to a neighbor you don’t know to recognizing opportunities to take action on important issues in your community. It’s time to connect! —Laura Hoagland, Sr. Specialist Community Engagement In 2014, Southwest launched the Heart of the Community program, which awards grants to create public spaces in the hearts of communities served by the airline. To date, the program has supported 18 innovative and transformative projects. To learn more, visit pps. org/Heart-of-the-Community.

On a flight in August 2015, my son and I met flight attendant Marcy McAleer. My son has a fully certified service dog, and during our flight, Marcy asked my son about his dog and what she does for him. Marcy also learned of my son’s desire to visit as many national parks as possible. When we landed in Philadelphia, Marcy placed a folded napkin in my hand with a note that said she wanted to give my son two roundtrip tickets to any Southwest destination. He chose Seattle, which began

It was not easy to continue making that call, but I always heard a kind voice on the other line. The loss of a parent is like no other, but eventually we all arrive at such a destination. When you are making life decisions for a person who gave you exactly that, flight reservations are not your immediate concern—they are in your attic. I was unfortunate to lose my mother once I did return home. When she passed, I still had a delayed return ticket to the north in a holding pattern and needed to

We just returned from our trip, and in the course of one week, he kayaked off Friday Harbor with orcas, hiked in Olympic National Park, and saw Seattle from the top of the Space Needle. We kept Marcy apprised of his adventure through pictures, so it felt as though she was there alongside us. This trip was a dream come true for my son and was made possible by Marcy’s gift of using her employee rewards points. She has touched our lives with her generosity. —Brydee Farmer

book a roundtrip for my husband due to work. I called Southwest and said, “Hello, my name is Tracy. I have a very confusing reservation to make, and I am not 100 percent.” I explained why: Just 30 minutes before, I had received the call that my mother had passed. Customer representative Traci Reeves responded with this: “Tracy, we are namesakes, and I have been in your shoes. All I can say is just take one step and get a victory; take another and celebrate that, too.” I got one thing done, and it was my first victory. We, the Tracy gals, took a moment to celebrate. Finally, I walked up to operations agent Yvonne Banks and told her my story. Without missing a beat, she escorted me back onto the now-empty plane. She helped me scour every aisle, as I repeated over and over that it was gone and that I had probably lost it at the gate in Vegas. As we neared my seat, it miraculously appeared, lodged between my former seat and my seatmate’s. Yvonne might have been more excited than I was. I have terrible flight anxiety, so getting myself on an airplane isn’t easy. I always tell the flight attendants before I board because I usually have panic attacks and want to warn them. This message from captain Pat Trusty meant so much to me: “Roses are red, violets are blue, we LUV that you are flying with us today. Yippee! Yahoo!” Knowing that Pat and first officer Amit Christian went out of their way to help me feel better about flying was touching. Partnering with local grove owners to utilize unwanted, barren trees, they mix the citrus wood with oak in their custom-built pits, creating the unmistakable flavor profile for their award-winning steaks. Their beef is aged in-house and seasoned with a family recipe made only by Clark and his father, president and owner, Ron Woodsby. Dear Reader,
Gratitude has been getting a lot of attention these days. Many people have come to consider it a form of self-help. As you can see on page 80, counting your blessings does do you good. But my wife, Dorothy, takes gratitude to a new level. She uses it to manipulate her husband. It started when she returned to a salaried career after 20 years of raising children. I was home writing a book (on persuasion, ironically) and began doing household chores. The first night she came home, Dorothy said, “Thanks for doing the laundry.” It occurred to me that I had never thanked her for doing that. So I committed myself to the laundry operation. Then there were the dishes. Personally, I prefer letting them stack over a day or two, for efficiency’s sake. But knowing her preference for an empty sink, I bowed to her wish. She thanked me the first time, and so I became master of dishes. I came to realize she had been thanking me all along: for reading to the children every night, for being kind to her relatives, for sometimes doing yard work. And every time she had thanked me for something, I did more of it. Two can play at this game, I figured. I began thanking her for earning a paycheck, for cooking occasionally, for building a fire in the fireplace, for letting me buy the latest gadget without her getting sarcastic. It wasn’t exactly a gratitude arms race. I believe she was genuinely grateful when she thanked me. For my part, as I tried to keep up with her, I began noticing more of the many things she does for me. This spring we celebrate 35 years of marriage, and I find I can’t thank her enough.

Dear Editor,
I read your story about sudden savants [“Uncharted Waters,” October 2016] while heading back home to San Antonio after meeting a colleague in Ohio. An endocrinologist, she recently suffered a health scare: She went into anaphylactic shock after taking an antibiotic, coded multiple times, and was anoxic for 80 minutes. The doctors declared her brain dead. Two days later, she woke up sharper than ever with an incredible mind. No one can explain it. Such are the miracles we witness daily. Tony Rehagen paints a beautiful image with that pen, and I was lifted up by the story.

It’s a pleasure to read the magazine on any Southwest flight, but I wanted to write to you about “My Mom, the Sports Fanatic” [September 2016]. I used to play soccer and can just imagine the

After reading “Swimming Upstream” by Leslie Contreras Schwartz [October 2016], I could not help but reflect on my own experience. When I joined the swim team in high school, I was barely able to stay afloat. In retrospect, I should have thanked my swim coaches for their patience. They helped me blow bubbles on the side of the pool as the varsity team glided past me. It was terrifying, but I learned so much. Now, when I feel that same feeling, I remind myself that fear is often an indication that we are on the edge
LIFESAVER
As the chairman of the federal safety agency—the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission—that created the drowning prevention campaign called Pool Safely, and as a father to two boys, I was moved by “Swimming Upstream.” Annually, nearly 400 children in the U.S. drown in a swimming pool or spa; yet these tragedies are 100 percent preventable. Participation in swimming lessons greatly reduces the risk of drowning and, as Leslie shows, it’s never too late to learn how. I encourage all parents and caregivers to visit poolsafely.gov.

HATCHING A THOUGHT
On a flight from Albuquerque to Houston, I read the little ditty about horses having 17 distinct facial expressions [Play Number, October 2016]. I sat back in my seat and wondered, How many facial expressions do birds have? I then spent the rest of the flight investigating. As an avid birder, I was disappointed to discover that expert opinion and research on this topic is as scarce as hen’s teeth. As a frequent flier, I was delighted to read an article that inspired my investigative abilities enough to make the rest of my flight, shall we say, fly by. Thanks to your magazine, my trip seemed shorter and sweeter than usual, and I am now keeping an eagle eye out for confirmation. Finding proof will make me happy as a lark!

of silent films are lost forever.
TREASURE TROVE
According to a report commissioned by the Library of Congress’ National Film Preservation Board, mum’s the word on silent films released from 1912–30. Of the 10,919 flicks made by major studios in that period, just 14 percent survive in their original format, 11 percent exist in lesser quality or as foreign films, and 5 percent are incomplete. The rest are likely lost, making preservation essential. “Silent films reflect the times in which they were made,” says study author and Media History Digital Library founder David Pierce. “Some reflect the popular fiction of the time, and others represent—as movies do today—the aspirations of the people who went to see them.”
Many of Charlie Chaplin’s films survive because, as an independent producer, he paid for the preservation of his films’ nitrate negatives himself.

Back before multimillion dollar contracts and global endorsement deals, pro athletes often held second jobs. Some were accountants, others painted houses. Boston Red Sox outfielder Tony Conigliaro was a singer. In 1965, “Tony C” signed a deal with RCA and recorded “Little Red Scooter,” which became a hit across New England. At Tony C’s in Boston, they’ve honored the track with a twist on the Cosmopolitan. The Little Red Scooter adds both pomegranate juice and pomegranate liqueur to the standard cranberry flavors. OUT TAKES INTERVIEW JIT TERS I was super nervous about interviewing Tony Robbins. I listened to his Personal Power II program in my mom’s hand-medown minivan after college, and it led to my first business. People always say don’t meet your heroes, but with Tony, the more I get to know him, the more impressed I am. AUDIO ART Hardcore History by Dan Carlin is an incredible podcast. The episodes are like the best audio books you’ve ever heard on any historical event you can imagine.
The entrepreneur, author, and podcast host says success isn’t about achievements. On The Tim Ferriss Show, I interviewed record producer Rick Rubin in his sauna— all of the equipment was wrapped up while we went back and forth between the ice bath. In the midst of this setup, we talked about how it’s important to pay more attention to fewer, deeper relationships, and also to stop being so hypercritical of yourself. It doesn’t serve you
or your audience to beat yourself up all the time. It doesn’t give you a competitive advantage, and it certainly won’t make you happy. Our discussion led me to focus on developing appreciation and not just achievements. It sounds cliché, but if you can’t appreciate what you have, nothing you get will ever make you happy.

DATE SMARTER Dating can be fun and invigorating – from that instant attraction you feel the first time you meet to jumping in the car for an impromptu weekend getaway. Unfortunately, it can take a lot of work to get to that stage of dating.
F
rom spending hours sorting through online profiles looking for a good match to trying to connect via pokes, winks and email, dating can suddenly feel like a full-time job.
Wouldn’t it be nice if you could just fast forward to the fun part of dating? That’s exactly what newlyweds Desireé and Michael Schlitt say It’s Just Lunch, a dating service for

With so many dating options out there, why did you choose It's Just Lunch?
D: I travel a lot for work, so I’d read about It’s Just Lunch in airline magazines, and then I ran into a friend who was attending the wedding of an attorney in town who’d met her husband through IJL – the fact that those two events happened so close together, I thought I should call them. At the end of my work day I didn’t want to come home and go look at profiles online. I felt like it was a waste of my time. M: I had gotten a divorce and then did online dating for a while before joining IJL. I joined mainly because it’s a lot of work to do the online thing. You have to keep up on it. You never really know who you’re going to meet. IJL was just a lot easier. They found people for me based on what I was looking for and I just had to show up. You don’t have to do much work. What would you tell a friend who was apprehensive about investing the money on IJL?
M: I’d ask, “Are you looking for a relationship or not?” With online dating you never know who’s on the other side of the line. IJL had better quality people who were interesting to me. It truly was an experience that was tailored for me. Describe your first meeting with an IJL matchmaker?
D: She asked me questions about
myself, what I like to do, what I want in a relationship, whether I’d marry someone who already had kids, how important religion is, that kind of thing. It
would take much longer to find out someone else’s answers to those questions through online dating. This was black and white.
Tell us about your first date with one another.
D: I never went on lunch dates because I was always busy at work so I met Michael after work at a downtown restaurant. The conversation just flowed. I was attracted to him from the start. I remember it turned into dinner.

Great golf isn’t guaranteed, but a great outcome is. The LUV Classic golf tournament has never been about impressive shots or scores. Whether we’re shooting birdies or double bogeys, every shot we take is aimed at making children smile. And that makes us smile. We put a lot of Heart into the annual LUV ClassicSM and Party, and we’re proud to say that 2016 marks the 31st year of benefitting children’s charities.

I shared a love of sports with my dad, but when I became a parent, my son had something else in mind. / BY RYAN JONES
I
was in my late 30s the first time I set foot in a comic book store. This was three or four years ago, the store a no-frills, basement-level space on a side street in the Pennsylvania college town where I live. Descending the short flight of steps, I was uncomfortable, a “normal” guy dragged against my will into what I presumed would be a room full of socially stunted weirdos. I did not want to be there. I was doing this for my son. I owned exactly one comic book as a kid, and all I remember is the advertisement on the back cover. The ad itself was a comic strip, a single-page panel extolling the virtues of Spalding basketballs. The premise: Happening upon a pickup game at a local playground, NBA stars Rick Barry and Julius Erving demonstrate to

a gang of awe-struck kids how, with the right brand of ball, they can play just like the pros. I can still see the panels, Barry and Dr. J drawn in late ’70s finery, shooting and dunking in long pants and butterfly collars. I remember that page because I was a sports kid. To be clear, I lacked the physical talent and singular focus to qualify as an actual jock, and I always had other interests. Still, I loved sports: loved thinking about them, loved watching them, loved playing just about any of them. And once my athletic deficiencies caught up with me, around my freshman year of high school, I gravitated toward writing about the teams I was no longer good enough to make. If there is a gene for this sort of thing, I failed to pass it on. My son is 12, a smart, funny, december 2016 southwest 59

talented kid, and he’s into all sorts of interesting things. He’s a movie buff (the Star Wars saga or anything of the relentless action variety), a TV obsessive (this year brought full immersion in The Simpsons), and as avid a video gamer as his parents will allow. He is also a voracious reader. My wife gets most of the credit for that, having read to him constantly from the time he was in the womb. He grew into and out

Rowling, and now he tears through series filled with secret agents and YA-friendly dystopias. His relentlessly creative little sister, 3 years younger, has followed in his
book-loving footsteps. Neither of them gives much thought to sports. Like many American boys, sports were how my father and I bonded. One of my earliest, happiest childhood memories is of watching the “Miracle on Ice” in the 1980 Winter Olympics. I remember celebrating with my dad, rolling on the floor in an ecstatic embrace as the Americans upset the Soviets. I was 6 years old, and I didn’t understand what the big deal was—I couldn’t grasp the geopolitical implications of anything involving a bunch of guys on skates—but the emotion of the moment was palpable. And I got to share it with my dad. When my son was born, I assumed our relationship would follow suit. My wife and I were living in Manhattan, where I worked at a monthly basketball magazine. My son’s early wardrobe was filled with NBA-logo bibs, socks, and onesies. There were infant-sized football jerseys from my alma mater. His first Halloween costume was a full kit from my favorite English soccer team. Eventually we left the city for small-town Pennsylvania, and when he turned 5 a few years later, I signed him up to play in the local youth soccer league, and myself to coach. I quickly learned that there is nothing more simultaneously frustrating and fun than the cat-herding absurdity of coaching 5 year olds in anything. My son ran and stumbled, laughed and cried, and occasionally managed to toe the ball in the right direction. His first goal came a few minutes after he’d taken a kicked ball in the face. We celebrated like he’d won the World Cup, by which I mean we went out for ice cream. But after just a few seasons he

(and we) realized he didn’t actually enjoy it all that much. We talked him into joining the local swim team, and he showed potential, but didn’t love it enough to justify those long practices. He tried the summer track program and intramural volleyball. He didn’t hate them, but nothing stuck. All of which, I should clarify, is fine. I spent a few years early in my career covering high school sports for local newspapers, and
F1_essay_kt.indd 62
I saw the failings of enough parents—the stage managers, the scholarship chasers, the hypercompetitive ragers—to promise myself I’d never push my own kids too hard from the sidelines. My wife and I encouraged, maybe gently bribed once or twice, but we never pushed. I cared less that my kid was great at sports than that he learned to enjoy them—not least so we could enjoy them together.
As a father, this felt important. I’d try to get him outside for a catch or offer to teach him how to shoot or dribble, but he was rarely in the mood. I took him to watch football and baseball and especially basketball games, once or twice introducing him to NBA players I knew. For some of his friends, such moments would’ve been unforgettable highlights of their childhoods. My son just thought it was cool that they were tall. I was never disappointed in my son, but I can’t deny being disappointed that we didn’t share this thing that had been so important to my dad and me. Still, there was no forcing it. In my kid’s mind, the dramatic reality of sports couldn’t compare to the fantastic drama, on page and on screen, of superheroes, stormtroopers, and spies. I held little hope that he’d ever come around. Somehow, without planning to, I came around instead. I was only trying to be a Good Dad on that spring Saturday a few years back when I took my son downtown for the annual Free Comic Book Day. I quickly learned it was the worst possible introduction for a reluctant first-timer. The place was packed. Some customers wore costumes. I just wanted it to be over. Yet we’ve been back each year since. Once a year isn’t so bad, I thought. But then somewhere along the way, my son figured out that you can subscribe to comic books. He learned about a new Star Wars title he just had to have. And oh by the way, a helpful clerk wondered, did he know there were actually four or five? A new installment of Han Solo or Poe Dameron is now an almost weekly occurrence, and since the store is just down the block from my office, it only makes sense that I pick it up on my way home. So now I’m a regular. And here’s the thing: The people at the comic book store are actually prett y cool. We know

each other’s names (conveniently, seemingly every guy who works there answers to John), and we’ve developed a rapport. They know when I pop in on a Wednesday evening I’m there to pick up for my son, not to obsess over the Black Panther reboot or debate all the ways Batman v. Superman failed on the big screen. They also know they might see my son and me on the occasional Sunday afternoon, when we’ve got some time to kill and allowance to spend. While he peruses the latest arrivals, I make my way to the graphic novels, where the nonfiction, historical stuff is more my speed. I no longer mind descending those steps—as long as we’re going in together. And then last spring he started asking me to toss the football. I taught him the difference between an out route and a post. He’ll never go out for the school team, which his mother is just fine with. But he’s got a decent arm and good hands, and if I manage not to be too critical of his route running, we have fun. I no longer work at that basketball magazine, but I still keep close tabs on the game, rooting for guys I covered before they made it to the league. I’m a homer for LeBron James, and when my son saw my nervous anticipation leading up to Game 7 of last year’s NBA Finals, he asked to stay up with me. It was a late tip off, but the school year had just ended, and even my wife and our daughter were game. How could I say no? A few hours later, as the final seconds ticked away on a historic comeback for LeBron and the Cavaliers, my son and I jumped up from the couch. We yelled, and high-fived, and embraced. “A lot of people will tell you bissell is the state’s best,” my friend Brian explained in an email. “And people stand in line to get their Substance ale.” I Googled the beer— described poetically on Bissell Brothers’ website as “a brightly dank ale that threads many needles”—and put it on the top of my to-drink list when I arrived in town. Once I checked into my hotel, I wandered past the piers and docks of Commercial Street, ducked into Craft Beer Cellar, and cheerfully asked for a pack of Substance. My introduction to the mania of the craft beer scene in Portland was quick, and it was harsh: I was literally laughed out of the store. I eventually found it on tap 15 blocks away at a quiet, noble bar called LFK. Heavy on citrus and pine, with a haziness typically reserved for humidors, the ale is sweet and creamy—and worth standing in line for. The city has done a bang-up job of reengineering industrial sites to make way for today’s burgeoning industry: beer. surly brewing company’s company Prospect Park brewery, for example, was built on the grounds of an old potato processing plant. Outer Boroughs The walk through Brooklyn’s Gowanus neighborhood— bisected by the Gowanus Canal, one of the most polluted bodies of water in the history of the United States—isn't exactly a stroll through Central Park. Add in a 40-degree drizzle on the day I visited, and the other half brewing company appeared like a beacon. Despite the weather, the tiny tasting room was jammed with fellow haven-seekers. I enjoyed a glass of the hazy and golden Superfun! (named after the canal’s status as an EPA Superfund site). Their most popular tap, the All Green Everything, is so legendary that its cans are traded on Reddit. They’re not the only locals generating buzz. grimm artisanal ales was launched in the Brooklyn kitchen of Lauren and Joe Grimm—the same kitchen where they still grow bacterial cultures for their ales. Grimm stands apart because they don’t actually have a standalone brewery. Instead, the couple migrates up and down the East Coast in search of open barrels where they can brew. “On a monthly basis, we’re traveling with a significant number of buckets of lactobacillus in our car,” Lauren says. It’s paying off. Last summer, Paste Magazine performed an industry-spanning, 115-beer double IPA blind taste test. Grimm’s beers placed first (Lambo Door) and fourth (Tesseract), despite the fact that none of the taste testers had ever tried Grimm before. “That’s absurd,” wrote judge Jim Vorel. “And that doesn’t happen by chance, not in a million years.” Pick up a bomber for yourself at bar great harry in Carroll Gardens. In Queens’ Long Island City, transmitter brewing has been churning out farmhouse-style beers since early 2014. Beers rotate regularly—that’s part of the fun—but the F1, a Brett golden ale, is a good way to kick-start your palate. To complete the Outer Borough tour, take the Staten Island Ferry to flagship brewing co. (the spicy, coriander-forward American wit is especially refreshing), or catch the subway to gun hill brewing co. in the Bronx. Austin
PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF TYLER MALONE/JESTER KING AND INDEPENDENCE
Twenty miles west of downtown Austin— over the Colorado River, past wildflowers and scrub brush, and up a dirt road— jester king brewery is the apex of beer in the Lone Star State. Run out of a farmhouse hauled in from South Texas, the ales are made with on-site well water. They’ve bottled 75 different beers since opening in 2010, some as simple as the Noble King (a hoppy farmhouse ale) and others as complex as the Vernal Dichotomous, brewed with smoked paprika and grilled lemons. Back in town, independence brewing’s resinous Stash IPA is another gem, while adelbert’s brewery has carved out a niche by focusing on Belgian styles. Their standard beers are excellent (especially the peppery Tripel B), but one-off specials are where Adelbert’s really shines. For the Contemplating Waterloo, they aged their Philosophizer saison in gin barrels. The result is a smooth ale with botanical notes of juniper and lavender. On Saturdays in Austin, join the crowds at hops and grain brewery brewery. The Greenhouse IPA is its experimental ale—they switch up the hops every batch, so no two brews are the same. Sitting high on an alluvial plain along the eastern edge of the Sonoran, the hottest desert in North America, “Old Pueblo” is ringed by juniper-capped mountains. Combine that with its proximity to the Mexican border, and you have a recipe for a cocktail town unlike any other in the United States. At tough luck club,, that geography manifests itself in the Militant Optimism. Using botanical gin as a base, this highball is punched up with Zirbenz, a stone pine liqueur from Austria known as the “agave of the Alps,” which mimics the resinous taste of the fir and juniper outside the city. penca channels Tucson not only with its tequila and mezcal selections but also with its production of hard-tofind Mexican drinks. Try a glass of tesguino, a fermented corn drink, or tepache,, made from fermented pineapple. At downtown’s batch cafe and bar, relish an Arizona Old: Tucson-produced Del Bac whiskey, prickly pear syrup, local bitters, and a candied jalapeno garnish. If you’re on your way to the mountains, stop at sidecar for a Oaxaca Dry Sour, made with a mezcal-gin combo, lime cordial, absinthe, and a kick of habanero shrub—it’ll keep you warm as the air thins.

Tucked into the city’s famed Eastern Market, detroit city distillery churns out spirits using Michigan-grown grains and produce. (The Peacemaker gin is made with white pine and blue spruce trees planted by co-founder Michael Forsyth.) Unlike most distilleries, their tasting room serves spirits the way most of us actually drink them: in cocktails. There’s a menu, of course, but we recommend the omakase, a Japanese expression that roughly translates to “I’ll leave it up to you”—bartenders incorporate the market’s daily produce. Every season, sugar house builds a new cocktail menu around the Michigan harvest. This fall, the Old Fashioned was made with Long Road wheat whisky (from Grand Rapids, Michigan), house-made cherry bitters (made with Michigan cherries), and local sassafras buckwheat honey syrup. Come winter, bring a group to the oakland for its Café Brûlot, a coffee and cognac concoction that bartenders ignite tableside. mabel gray head bartender Paul Fradeneck is charged with keeping pace with the eclectic, ever-changing food menu. At dogwood, try the La Sirena, a spicy, lemony mezcal concoction, and then retire to its annex, darling’s elixirs. Housed in an old pharmacy, it hosts only five tables and an equally small menu. The frothy Lady Evil balances gin and rosewater syrup with star anise. Slide into the lush backyard at boot & shoe service and sip on a Donna Vecchia, made with herbal wine, amaro, and lime. And no trip to Oakland is complete without a stop at the ephemera-packed café van kleef. Searching for adventure? Let me sing the virtues of avoiding the grinding Long Island Expressway in favor of taking the Long Island Railroad to wine country. A bottle of blanc de blancs—an effervescent, bubbly wine—from paumanok vineyards en route will wake up your palate and orient you to the region’s terroir. Once you’ve arrived, Anna-Christina Cabrales, wine director at Fifty in Manhattan, recommends the blanc de blancs at sparkling pointe, which exclusively makes sparkling wine in the Champagne style. “It’s very clean and balanced,” she says. The region is also suitable for sauvignon blanc and cabernet franc, says Kimberly Prokoshyn, head sommelier at Rebelle, also in Manhattan. The cool, salty climate lends wines freshness, while glacial soils aid ripening. If you’re cab franc curious, Long Island is a great place to get your feet wet with this light, fruity red. Oenophiles in New York all love shinn estate vineyards, while Prokoshyn extols the cab franc at macari vineyards. She suggests their sauvignon blanc, too: “It’s fresh and slightly herbal, very energetic.” You can do Long Island wine country as a day trip from New York, but it’s best to stretch your sips across a weekend, so book a room at Shinn Estates’ on-site farmhouse.

Maybe it’s a blessing that the increasingly celebrated wines from Mexico’s Valle de Guadalupe are rarely exported—to drink them, you pretty much have to go to Baja California. “We’ve got a Mediterranean feeling but with a Pacific breeze and that big Western sky,” says Eileen Gregory, a British expat and owner of vena cava winery, which sits in the hills outside the sailboat-flecked port city of Ensenada. Twenty years ago, there were only a handful of wineries in this region, which is

After a soak in the pool, ask Eileen or her husband, Phil, for their favorites, and they’ll recommend the earthy tempranillo at finca la carrodilla and the cabernet franc at casa de piedra. It was restored in 2005 and is now home to 11 tasting rooms. Knowledgeable pourers filled my glass and filled me in on Clarksburg’s history. Grapes have been grown here for more than 160 years, but were sold off to big wineries until the late ’70s, when the Bogle family started making their own wines. Now the area has more than a dozen wineries. I enjoyed a crisp chenin blanc from heringer estates, a juicy petite sirah from clarksburg wine company company, and a slightly herbaceous tempranillo from todd taylor wines. At Husick’s Country Store, I got myself a French dip sandwich to eat under the oak-canopied grounds at bogle vineyards. There’s nowhere to stay in Clarksburg. But no worries: The towers of Sacramento are right there, rising up out of the delta, so close yet somehow so far.

n the day she finally told me what she needed from me, she took a shower with her eyes closed, unable to bear the sight of her hair twirling down the drain. She dried off, dressed, and let the nurses attach a tube to a surgically installed port in her chest. Good blood rushed into her body to replace the cancer-filled blood. She settled into a chair and wiggled her toes to make sure they weren’t going numb, a minor everyday nuisance for someone with multiple sclerosis. Kendra Williams was in room 351 of Iowa Methodist hospital in Des Moines, 19 days into a 30-day chemotherapy treatment to combat acute myeloid leukemia. Doctors had given her a 50-50 shot of making it to Day 30. Beyond that, patients with this leukemia usually live, at best, five years. She’s 43. I was headed home soon, back to my life in North Carolina after spending four days with her and her friends and family. Carolina. We kept in touch every now and then, but I hadn’t seen her since she left Virginia 11 years ago. The last time we exchanged notes was 2012, when Kendra learned I was going through a divorce from one of the other young writers in our group. Always the mentor, she reached out and offered to help. “You are a good man with a good spirit, and happiness can’t help but chase down people like you, even when things are at their darkest,” she wrote. “So hang in.” Kendra and her husband, Mark, adopted their son Colin in 2006. Colin loves basketball and Pokémon GO. He also has Asperger’s syndrome: He’s brilliant academically, but about four years behind his peers socially. On August 24, his first day of fifth grade, the 10-year-old boy with floppy hair left school and went to the hospital and listened to his mother tell him she might not live to October. Coincidentally, just a few days before they’d received that news, an editor at this magazine gave me an assignment: to write a letter to someone who’d changed my life but I’d never had the chance to properly thank. Then I was to take that letter and show up on that person’s doorstep and read it aloud. Kendra was one of the first people I thought of, but I was hesitant to contact her after I heard how sick she was. step 1/ Close your eyes and think back over the course of your life. Hey Mike – Well, this was meant to be. I have a journal next to my bed with a note in it to contact you today. Your message is timely and appreciated so, so much. … I recently read through an old email folder I have called Nice Things. I have so many emails in there from you and Andrew and others from my time at the [Winchester] Star. In one of them, you thanked me for helping you get your job in Fayetteville [North Carolina], and said if I ever needed anything, I should ask. So I need something. So I’m asking. I’d like you to write a piece about me for my celebration of life service, whenever that is. Something that people could

take home copies of and something that Mark and Colin can use as a touchstone in the years ahead. I can get you names and contacts. I have already written my own obit. This is something beautiful and separate. I flew to Des Moines a little more than a week later and stayed from September 10 to 13. Before I left to go home, I asked my former editor one last time what she wanted from this story she’d asked me to write about her. She paused and delivered that familiar stare before answering. “I want Colin to know just how much I love him,” she said. “The sad thing is, he doesn’t remember what I was like before I got sick. I want him to know that I wasn’t just his mom. I want him to know I did other things too.” I pulled the door to room 351 shut and went up the elevator and into a skywalk that led to a parking garage. I stopped and cried, knowing she might not make this walk out of the hospital herself, knowing that the more connections we make the more skywalks we’ll have, knowing the assignment she’d given me, and having no idea what to do with all that. This is what I came up with.

lost. But she’s not.
Hey Colin – You may not remember me, but we met in September when your mom was in the hospital. I came to your house in Iowa. You didn’t say hello, but that’s OK. I know you had a lot on your mind. It was the first Sunday of the NFL season, after all. I’m sorry Odell Beckham didn’t score any touchdowns that afternoon. One or two more and you’d have won your fantasy football game against your mom. But think of it this way: You gave her a little win when she really needed one. You’ve always had a way of doing that. She was 10 miles away that day, in room 351 of the

hospital downtown. I’d say she was “fighting cancer,” but she doesn’t like to phrase it that way. Cancer doesn’t fight fair. I watched you agonize over that football game, saw how much it hurt you when things didn’t work out. Here’s a little secret a lot of people won’t tell you, Colin: It’s OK to feel pain. It is. You’ll meet people along the way who try to silence your aches, but it’s only out of fear of their own. Your mom was a kid once, believe it or not. Your grandfather worked for an oil company and the job moved them all over the world, from New York to Saudi Arabia to Illinois to Virginia. You’ve always had one home, the blue one with the big field and hummingbird feeders, where your mom and dad built a life for you and your dog, Daisy. Your dad’s a great man too, Colin. You remind me of him. He’s one of those guys who can’t sleep on nights the Cubs or the Packers lose a big game, and he knows
every word to every Beatles song ever made. He showed your mom what love was after she married another man who turned out to be wrong for her. While I was watching you and your dad in your living room that day, the wind blew in from across the field and I thought about the ribbon of life that led us all here. To you, she’s mom. To your dad, she’s his spouse and your mom. To me, she was a mentor. But she was many other things to many other people. When she was a girl living in Saudi Arabia, your grandfather took the family to Kenya on a safari, and they came upon a local market. Your mom picked out a purse and asked her dad for money. He gave her 20 shillings and advice on bartering. “It’s what you’re supposed to do,” he told her. She asked the vendor if she could have the purse for 10 shillings. He’d priced it at 20, but he said yes. She ran back to the car crying.
“Dad,” she said, “I think I cheated that man, and I’m worried that he doesn’t have any money.” Your mom never cheated anyone, Colin. In fact, the rest of us always got the better end of the deal. Another time when she was a little girl in Buffalo, your grandfather lost her at the county fair. He reported her to lost and found. You know where they found her? She was in the bookmobile the library had set up on the fairgrounds. That’s right: When a kid goes to the fair and doesn’t smear cotton candy all over her face or shoot water guns at clowns’ mouths or spin on the Tilt-a-Whirl, we all assume she’s lost. But she’s not. Your mom was right where she wanted to be. She was reading, like usual. She sat on your great-grandfather’s lap when she was 4 or 5 and read the Sunday comics to him, word for word. She read full books to her cat, Muffin. She was the first person to grab the afternoon paper from the mailbox, and she’d read

the headlines, mostly about Jimmy Carter back then. The day she went to college at Mary Washington, she hugged her roommate and cried. Not tears of pain. Tears of joy. After all those moves, after navigating childhood as a bookworm in a cotton-candy world, your mom finally found a place where all she had to do was learn. She studied under a man named Dr. James Farmer. Look him up. He was a civil rights leader who marched with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. He organized the Freedom Ride, which helped lead to the desegregation of the interstate transportation system. You can find all this in Dr. Farmer’s obituary from the local Virginia papers after he died in 1999. Your mother wrote it. People told her she should be a teacher. “But I don’t know anything yet,” she’d tell them. So after college, she went to work at newspapers. They helped her figure out the world.
P5_TheLetter_kdm.indd 84
You ran toward your dad, and he bent down and hugged you, wrapped you up. That’s it, your mom told herself. Let’s stop the world now. One day, a Tuesday, the paper she worked for near Chicago was set to go to the printer when something terrible happened in New York. You weren’t born until five years later, but that day—Sept. 11, 2001—changed America. It also changed your mom’s career. The news editor at your mom’s newspaper didn’t think it was a big enough deal to stop the presses and redo the whole paper. She left the office to get coffee. Your mom was appalled. She stood up in front of the entire newsroom and said, “This is what we’re going to do.” And she did it. By the time the news editor
got back, your mom already had a new plan for a new edition that would go on to win awards. The next week, she got promoted. I tell you this story because there’s a lesson in it: Don’t be bound by anybody’s description of you. If you know the right thing to do, do it. Don’t assume someone else will. Not long after that day, she was making post-deadline calls to other papers when an editor named Mark picked up. She asked how he was doing. Your dad, Mark, has no idea why, but he said, “Not that great.” Your mom asked if she
11/7/16 6:13 PM
could help. They went out for dinner the next week, and they kept talking on the phone after that, hours at a time. Two years later she got a job in Winchester, Virginia, a little town in a big valley at the northern tip of the state. She drove to Virginia to start her new life on Valentine’s Day 2003, and your dad came with her. That’s when I met her, in between those hills. I was 23 years old then. I know that seems old to you now, but trust me, I was just a kid. We had a whole group of kids my age in Winchester, recent college graduates who believed we were smart. Your mom came along and taught us how much we didn’t know. She gave us weekly reading assignments from great writers around the country, and sometimes we played the “Why?” game: A person would state a fact about something they’d done and face the room of reporters to answer “Why?” four or five times. There are lots of things I hope you take from her, and all of them add up to a good and gracious life. But this one is especially important—work hard and be good to people, even when the world isn’t working or good for you. Because something good will come along. Something like you. We call these things “reasons.” They’re the answers to “Why?” Your mom was always fond of reasons. You’ll find these people as you go through life: those who believe everything happens for a reason, and others who believe the world’s totally random. You can believe whatever you want, but here’s an indisputable fact—if your mom hadn’t gone to all those places in her life, she never would’ve met you. If your mom and dad hadn’t left Winchester when they did, they wouldn’t have made $30,000 on their house, and they wouldn’t have been able to put that money toward a private adoption. If they hadn’t moved to the Midwest, they wouldn’t have been at that meeting with your biological mother when
P5_TheLetter_kdm.indd 85
she said, “Yes, you are the people who should raise my child.” All these things had to happen for you to become your mom’s son. We are the sum of our connections. The more people we meet, the more influence we have. Kendra Williams, your mom, will live forever through other people, Colin. You’ll find a piece of her in everything I write, and in the writing of so many others. Anybody who’s ever been in her orbit is
better for it. You know Jo Oldson from your church? She’s a state representative and makes laws for all of Iowa. She’s also a cancer survivor. Your mom and Jo got pretty close. They developed a text-message symbol for cancer a few years ago. It’s the emoji of the monkey covering its eyes. It means “$#&%*! cancer.” (One day Jo will tell you what the symbols stand for.) And you remember Jess, your mom’s former co-worker, who

takes you to Chuck E. Cheese’s sometimes. He recorded a podcast with your mom after she got cancer, and she told him something he’ll never forget: “I wish this had never happened to me, but I’m glad that I’ve used it to find meaning.” Your mother’s life was full of meaning before she got sick, though, Colin. When you were little, your parents took you to the mall, just the three of you. Your mom went with you to a play area and your dad wandered off to browse. When he came back, you spotted him through the crowd of people and ran toward him, arms wide open. He bent down and hugged you, wrapped you up. That’s it, your mom told herself. Let’s stop the world now. I’m not sure why the world didn’t listen to her. Things got tough. MS first, then cancer. Your mom loved reasons but there’s no good reason for this. There’s no good reason a kid like you should have to come home from his first day of fifth grade and go straight to the hospital to see her. There’s no good reason she should've had to tell you that her cancer was back and worse than ever, and that she had a 50-50 shot of surviving a 30-day chemo treatment. It’s hard to find any justification for any of this. But your mom would want us to try. So here’s a little story that wouldn’t have happened if your mom hadn’t gotten sick. I hadn’t seen her since she left Winchester. That’s 11 years. I hadn’t talked to her in four years. Life’s been busy, as the sad excuse goes. But in August, just before you started school, I was assigned a story about saying thanks to someone who has changed my life. I chose your mom. When I sent her a message, she responded by asking me to write this story for you. That’s the reason I was up there to visit you for four days in September. I’m not sure why she chose me for this. Maybe she just enjoys

I’m not sure why she chose me for this. Maybe she just enjoys giving me difficult assignments. Maybe she’s trying to teach me one more lesson. giving me difficult assignments. Maybe she’s trying to teach me one more lesson. I do know this: When I was with her in room 351, she had a stack of letters for you. There’s one for your 18th birthday, one for your graduation, one for your wedding. She was writing notes in them and sealing them up for you to read later. She imagined herself in those moments, imagined what the weather will feel like or the room will sound like or what kind of suit you’ll be wearing. “Even if you don’t believe it,” she told me she wrote in the cards,
“I’m still with you today.” One more thing about your mom, Colin. You already know this one. That month she had a 50-50 shot of surviving, she survived. She made it to the end of September. She made it back home to Daisy and your dad and the hummingbirds and you. Her friends started using #kendrastrong. She was with your dad to watch the Cubs make a run to the World Series. In mid-October, she went to Iowa City to look for more signs of hope. She ruled out a bone marrow transplant because it’s too risky with her MS. But the doctor in
Iowa City says she can try stem cell treatment. This means she’ll have to make trips from Des Moines to Iowa City for three months. It’s only about a two-hour ride, but it’ll be tough in an Iowa winter. She might miss a basketball game or two. But she has to do this. It’s her last chance at a cure. What I’m trying to say, Colin, is that your mom, a cherished editor and friend, asked me to write a story about her life, a story in which she wanted me to let you know who she was and how much she loves you. She asked me to publish it after she died. But I’m writing this now because out of all the lessons your mom taught me, the one I hope I’ll always remember is this—never put things off. Thanks for letting us share her with you. Michael Graff is the editor of Charlotte magazine. Tell him about the people who have changed your life at michaelngraff@gmail.com.

One Question
Britney Spears,
what’s your favorite song?
It changes all the time. I get hooked on something, and then want to listen over and over to take it all in. My own music has been influenced by everyone from Whitney Houston to Lenny Kravitz. There are so many great artists, and each inspires me in different ways.
