An Appeal for Civility One of the truly special traits I cherish about Southwest Airlines is our Culture.

Culture is defined in many ways, and influenced by things like history, environment, and even expectations. It can be as simple as it is complex. In a global sense, Merriam-Webster defines culture as “the set of shared attitudes, values, goals, and practices that characterizes an institution or organization.” Using that framework, if I had to sum up Southwest Airlines’ Culture, I’d say we live by the Golden Rule, embrace civility, and deliver heartfelt Hospitality.

That means we treat each other like

Family and our Customers like guests in our home. This is especially important because we’re in the Customer Service industry, and every Customer will have multiple encounters with our Employees and fellow Customers that will help define their experience. Some of those encounters we can control; some we cannot. What we focus on is creating a welcoming environment where you can sit back, relax, and enjoy your flight—and maybe even have fun along the way.

I am often reminded of how any single Southwest flight reflects our society atlarge. Look around you, and you will find

people from all walks of life, including different ethnicities, religions, sexual orientation, ages, and on and on. We’re all on a journey to our destination for different reasons—some joyous occasions, some sad and somber events, some for work, and some for fun. And we share a confined space at 35,000 feet until we land and go our separate ways.

I believe the Southwest Culture sets a wonderful example for our communities. As an airline, our Purpose is to connect People to important moments in their lives. I love the concept of making connections and bringing communities closer together, especially when it can seem as though our society is more fragmented than ever.

My appeal to you today is to imagine and help realize a world where we all live by the Golden Rule, embrace civility, and focus on Hospitality. It’s a world I want my children and grandchildren to grow up in, and I know it would lead to a better life for us all. You have my commitment that Southwest will do our part—one flight at a time!

A Party With Heart

Southwest teams up with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital®.

In 2017, Southwest Airlines celebrated the 10th anniversary of our Medical Transportation Grant Program and the 20th anniversary of our Adopt-A-Pilot program. How better to celebrate these two programs than by creating an incredible day for some amazing kids at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital? With our friends at St. Jude, Southwest hosted a one-of-a kind party for some very special guests: St. Jude patients and their families. What’s a party without balloons, treats, planes, and Pilots?

On hand to help us celebrate were some of our special Adopt-A-Pilot Ambassadors. These Pilots go above and beyond by volunteering every year to teach fifth-grade students STEM-related education programs. Our Pilots were just as excited to see the kids as the kids

were to see them! Alongside the kids, the Pilots flew paper planes down a paper runway, helped decorate hero capes, and posed for pictures. The kids were especially excited to have real Pilots answer every imaginable question about airplanes. As the party ended, we overheard each Pilot sharing stories of their day with the children, and it was evident what an impact this experience had.

“I was deeply touched and inspired by the whole experience,” Southwest Airlines Captain Ricardo Aguilar said.

“Those kids and the miracles performed at St. Jude have motivated me to live a little extra every day.”

Southwest is proud to support hospitals like St. Jude by providing complimentary, round-trip tickets for their patients and their families through our Medical Transportation Grant Program.

Dear Southwest, I work for the Cradle of Liberty Council, Boy Scouts of America, which is the local chapter of the Boy Scouts in Greater Philadelphia.

Our office received a package in the mail that included a baseball cap that was part of the uniform for a large contingent of Boy Scouts who had recently spent two weeks on a hiking/camping expedition in New Mexico. It was mailed by Captain Dan Reilly, who indicated that he found it after he had finished flights for the day. We were able to return

As the operations manager at Southern Air Freight, I shipped a next flight guaranteed shipment from Nashville to Amarillo, Texas. My only option to get it to my customer was a connecting flight that arrived at AMA at 11:25 p.m., which was after the cargo facility was scheduled to close. I called the AMA Cargo Facility and spoke to Southwest freight agents Ryan Mosher and Robert Girty. They made arrangements to have someone at the AMA station stay to release the freight to my customer upon arrival. Thank you for some of the best customer service I have had in my 20 years of dealing with many different major airlines. They both went above and beyond to accommodate my needs as a customer, which is extremely rare these days. I don’t remember many of the useful things I learned in college. It’s the useless stuff that sticks: “ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny,” a long-disproven biological theory. The fact that Socrates had been a heck of a soldier in battle. And anything from the class Mozart’s Opera. My dad, an MIT-educated engineer, nearly disowned me when he learned I was taking the course. “What are you going to do with Mozart’s Opera?” he asked. Absolutely nothing.

Of course, as Homer Simpson says, a little useless knowledge can be dangerous. “Every time I learn something new, it pushes some old stuff out of my brain,” he tells Marge. “Remember when I took that home winemaking course and I forgot how to drive?”

But I’m willing to take the risk. My favorite museums are packed with useless delights, giving you the sense that knowledge itself is a form of play. Years ago, I wrote in this magazine about the Pinball Hall of Fame in Las Vegas, dozens of old machines that are maintained and playable for as little as a quarter—a

I flew to Maine in October and had the pleasure of reading “’Til the Cows Came Home,” and then I flew to Arizona in November and enjoyed “The Bully and the Buddhist.” Both articles were about sincere personal transformation and hope, and were very uplifting.

These are just the types of article that I now look forward to when I travel on Southwest. Thank you for going beyond the generic stories that one usually encounters on plane trips. O

n March 27, 2015, Captain Scott Kelly clambered aboard the Soyuz spacecraft and blasted off from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, bound for the International Space Station, 254 miles above Earth. So began his 340 days in space, the longest single spaceflight in U.S. history. His charge? To further our understanding of life in microgravity and let scientists learn as much as humanly possible about how space affects the body.

Your year in space was a deliberate first step toward mankind’s most ambitious goal yet. Why a year, and what was this mission meant to prepare for?

The idea is that someday we want to go farther away from the Earth. And when we do that, it’s going to take us longer to get there. We’re only going to have the space station for a few more years, and it’s a good opportunity to learn more about human physiology, psychology, and the systems it takes to spend more time in space. When we go to Mars someday, it’ll take 200 days to get there.

You’ll spend over a year on the surface. Then it’ll take us 200 days to get back. There are just more things we need to understand before we do that.

Like the poorly understood effects of weightlessness?

The thing about microgravity is if you’re going to do an experiment on Earth, you can only vary certain things. On Earth, you can vary G-forces in a positive way, but in space, when you can remove the force of gravity, that gives you another variable that allows you to gain new insight.

Part of your charge was to become a living laboratory.

I was the guinea pig. Among the problems of long-duration spaceflight, there’s bone loss, muscle loss, effects of radiation at a genetic level. There are effects to our immune system, cognitive effects, psychological effects.

There are changes to our eyes. There’s swelling in the optic nerve and these things called choroidal folds. It’s a fleshy part on the back of your retina that seems like it’s due to the pressure in space—an upward fluid shift in our heads. There’s concern that maybe someday they could result in blind spots.

The life support equipment is something we need to nail down better and make it more reliable, more efficient. In some cases, make it work better. That’s part of this larger experiment of the space station. The more we

know, the longer people spend in space, the better we’ll know how to support them.

As a test pilot, at first you felt as though a long stint on the ISS wasn’t all that appealing. But the shuttle days were gone. You were going to be a scientist, in a sense.

How was that transition?

At first, it wasn’t something I was that interested in. I was a pilot and a test pilot, and to make a long story short, I got roped into it a little bit. It was much different than a shuttle launch. [For this mission] I think it’s more important to have someone who is a good operator of experiments than it is to have someone who might be a scientist themselves. You’re also the housekeeper. You’re the cook, the engineer, the mechanic, the electrician, the doctor, the dentist, the science operator.

Having one twin on the space station for a year and the other (your astronaut brother, Mark) on the ground probably served as a nice control for your human experiment. Was that something NASA planned?

It was kind of a serendipitous thing—the happy accident.

I had already been assigned to the flight and I had asked about genetic research. Apparently, the government isn’t allowed to ask their employees to participate in genetic research, but because I asked the question, that opened the door. It gave NASA the opportunity to delve into this area of genetic-based research that they’ve never been involved with before.

Your mother was a cop, which back then was less common for a woman. How did that serve as an early blueprint for your own goals?

She had an obstacle course in our backyard. She studied a lot for the exams, the civil service exam. My dad built a wall she had to scale during this test. She [also] had to drag a dummy, which was me. She made an impression on my brother and me, and inspired us. When you see your mom do something you don’t see anyone else’s mom doing, it makes an impression. At the time, it was very outside the box. Eventually, it made me a better student and made me see what it took to have a goal you think you might not be able to achieve, and then work really, really hard to achieve it.

eoff Klock had just been hit by a car. He was on sabbatical from his job as a professor at the Borough of Manhattan Community College when a taxi made a turn through Klock (and his bike) in Manhattan’s Upper West Side. Until then, he had logged more than 100 miles a week commuting around the city, but he knew those days were over, at least for a while.

As he was recovering, in August 2015, he heard from two guys running a small, new adult education business called Think Olio. Would he be interested in meeting and learning more?

“They sent me an email,” Klock recalled recently, “and I was like, This is sketchy. I don’t know what this is.”

In a sense, it was sketchy. Think Olio’s founders, Chris Zumtobel and David Kurfirst, hunted RateMyProfessors.com for local instructors with high teaching ratings. Klock was on the list, so they invited him out for a beer.

Thanks to a broken shoulder and sabbatical,

Klock, an English professor, was bored enough to find out more. “We’ve cut the excess out of education,” Olio’s website declared. “The costs, the tests and grades, the fluorescent lighting, and people who don’t really want to be there.” Well, that sounded pretty good to him.

Three months later, Klock was teaching his first “Olio” (noun: a miscellaneous collection, especially of art or literature) on the wisdom of pop culture in a bookstore he described as “the size of a large bathroom.” Despite his short stature, Klock commands the room with his athletic frame and naturally projecting voice, remnants from his musical theater days. But on that day, none of his trademark showmanship was of much use. Eleven or so people paid something like $10 each to hear him talk. As per Think Olio’s original agreement with its instructors, Klock pocketed half the proceeds.

To most professors, this would have been a mildly successful evening, mostly thanks to the money. But that’s not what Klock took away from the event.

“One of the things that attracted me to teaching—and this is a silly, pretentious thing to say— it’s an old profession,” Klock said. “It goes back thousands of years, you know? I like the idea of, like, Socrates walking around talking to people.

It’s a very attractive image to me.” While he considers himself very lucky to be teaching at a community college that gives him flexibility in structuring courses and choosing the material he teaches, there’s always the required flotsam of modern education: financial aid, homework, committees, meetings, grades, forms. “It becomes, there’s this whole …” Klock searched for the right word. “There’s all this … stuff.”

But Think Olio was different. “There’s something about it that just feels pure,” he said as his cadence slowed and his words became smoother.

“There’s something pure about it because the entire bureaucracy is not there.”

Attendees pay a modest fee to hear local professors speak about pretty much whatever they want, from David Lynch movies to Margaret Atwood’s Handmaid’s Tale to asteroids to racism. The only requirements: The professors can’t read the lecture verbatim, and they have to love teaching.

Klock called back the image of Socrates walking around, the vision of the old profession he held dear. Think Olio, for him, is its modern successor.

“It’s just: Let’s talk about stuff because this is interesting.”

N

ine months before they first emailed Klock, Zumtobel and Kurfirst were students at the City University of New York, the same state system under which BMCC operates. The two were studying in a special program where they could design their own majors and bounce between CUNY’s many schools. Zumtobel, who moved to New York from Reno, picked entrepreneurial storytelling, while Kurfirst, New York born and raised, majored in religion and entrepreneurship.

The two met their final year, in a course called social entrepreneurship. Half the class dropped the first day because they thought it was about Facebook, and the course almost got canceled. But just enough students stayed. The teacher assigned them a project to pitch a business idea along the course’s theme.

“Dave pitched basically a ‘gym where adjunct professors would teach classes’ kind of concept—” Kurfirst corrected Zumtobel: “A gym membership model.”

“Yeah,” Zumtobel agreed, realizing how he had

just made Think Olio sound like a fitness facility, “but a place, like a gym.”

“It wasn’t, like, adjuncts working out,” Kurfirst clarified. The idea was, more precisely, “a school where adjuncts would teach, an adult education place where you’d go sign up for a day of classes or something.”

The idea needed refinement, but it came to Kurfirst because he was “really pissed off” about the abominable work conditions for adjunct professors. While higher education used to be dominated by full-time, tenure-track professorships about two-thirds of instructors at the university level nowadays are non-tenure, half of them only working part-time. Even as tuition fees soar at private and public colleges, 31 percent of part-time higher-education faculty is living near or below the federal poverty line, according to the American Community Survey. Most adjuncts get paid a few thousand dollars per course, max. And after the passage of the Affordable Care Act in 2010, universities slashed adjunct hours and pay rates to skirt laws requiring employers to provide health insurance to employees working full-time hours. february 2018 Southwest 45

Not only are these professors the worst compensated, they can often be the best teachers a student will have. Over a two-semester stretch, Kurfirst had five or six adjuncts who ended up being some of his favorite instructors. But they weren’t paid like it, scraping by on something like $12 an hour with side jobs to make ends meet.

As a result, Think Olio’s goal was to give adjuncts a place to teach and explore new ideas outside the university system—and pay them fairly. The vast majority of the 350 Olios they’ve held have been one-off lectures on topics largely of the professors’ choosing.

Ticket prices range from $12 to $25 and often include free beer or wine.

But there was a selfish element to the business plan, too. The two students were in their last year of

college. They already dreaded the idea that soon they would have to stop dedicating their lives to learning. They, like many adults, had friends who left college and wished they dedicated themselves more fully to their studies. Or, as Zumtobel put it, “We kind of predicted our nostalgia for the classroom

before it happened.”

So, when they left college, they took the classroom with them.

A few days later, the two went out for a beer. Zumtobel launched into his plan about how to make it a reality. Not years from then, or even months from then, but within weeks. No need for a physical

building, he suggested. Just use other people’s space, like living rooms or local coffee shops and bars. And, he added, charge audiences as little as possible. Make it accessible.

“I didn’t even know if I was really going to do this or not,” Kurfirst said, chuckling. “Chris just decided to be my business partner, and I was like, ‘All right.’”

Less than three months later, in March 2015, they hosted their first Olio in Kurfirst’s living room.

One of their former professors, Michael Haltenberger, gave a talk on religion viewed through the lens of Bokononism, the fictional religion in Kurt Vonnegut’s Cat’s Cradle.

They got the word out through Facebook. Their recollections vary on the attendance: Kurfirst said seven, Zumtobel said five.

But the professor came prepared, and they learned something.

The event proved, on the smallest of scales, that it was feasible. “[We] drank beers in Dave’s

living room and talked about Vonnegut with a professor,” Zumtobel said with a big smile at the recollection. “And we were like, This worked. This is awesome!”

S

ince they were studying at a business school, the two co-founders did the obvious thing when starting a business: They searched for money.

And even though there was absolutely nothing technical about Think Olio, the way to raise money in 2015 was to sound as much like a tech company as possible.

“Think Olio: Airbnb for Learning” is the sub-headline of the company’s page on AngelList, a platform for startups. The company goes on to describe itself as a peer-to-peer “marketplace for in-person learning.” Zumtobel and Kurfirst joined an incubator program at CUNY’s Baruch College and, in June of that year, won $20,000 at a startup competition for New York City college students.

But during those few energetic months between their first Olio in Kurfirst’s living room and winning tens of thousands of dollars, the two co-founders had to interrogate themselves. What did they want their business to be? What did they want to accomplish? What did they want their lives to look like while running it? Advisors at Baruch were telling them to think big, make the business as handsoff as possible, and expand to other cities.

At first, growing rapidly and being hands-off sounded great to the college students. They got “wideeyed” about it, as Kurfirst put it, as they envisioned Olios being held around the country or even the world: lifelong learning at an affordable price, reigniting people’s passion for education. The liberal arts—literally defined as “skills of the free people”—returned to the masses. They could, dare they dream it, change the world.

co-founders did something increasingly remarkable in the business world: They resisted the pull of the modern, expanding economy and stayed true to their vision. Remembering the simple joy of seven (or five) people in a living room, they realized they weren’t ready to be a platform, a peer-to-peer network, a global movement. They were only ready, and only barely ready, to be an Olio.

They circled around a core group of 10 to 15 instructors, including Klock, to teach at about a dozen rotating venues. Since the summer of 2015, they’ve held Olios on topics ranging from loneliness, civil disobedience, addiction, and universal basic income to Paris’ Jazz Age, the movie Barton Fink, and string quartets. They’re held in bars, coffee shops, outdoor spaces, art studios, co-working spaces, and one of the city’s great rooms, the Strand Bookstore’s rare book room. Many event spaces even pay them for the exposure, or the

Olios will be sponsored by companies with event budgets and the desire to break the monotony of after-work happy hours. Adult beverages are often provided by sponsors.

Much of the necessary labor for running an event is provided via the barter system. Volunteers get to attend Olios for free as long as they greet guests or distribute beers. Photographers volunteer their time in exchange for free entry. Kurfirst and Zumtobel almost never miss an Olio; at least one of them has been present at about 300 of the 350 they’ve organized.

The day they don’t want to attend Olios anymore, they say, is the day they will shut it down.

long the way of trying to build a business, they accidentally built a community of lifelong learners: the professors, the volunteers, the repeat students. Unlike almost every other adult education organization

in the country, this community skews overwhelmingly young. “We really didn’t think our audience would be as young as it is.” Zumtobel shrugged. “It started with our friends, then the friends of our friends, and then their friends, and it’s just grown from really our network of people we know.” They estimate 75 percent of their paying customers are 25 to 40 years old. The business itself, thanks to almost zero overhead costs, is more successful than they ever imagined, especially considering they are, by their own admissions, totally uninterested in profit maximization.

Neither of the co-founders know exactly how they managed to accomplish this; they certainly didn’t set out to be a lecture series for millennials, and they happily welcome all ages. But the likeliest explanation is the simplest one: They work with professors they find interesting and craft their events the way they would want

them—from the beers to the unpretentious, off-the-cuff, slightly tipsy introductory speeches—and, since they’re millennials, it only stands to reason other millennials might find that appealing as well.

Klock, who is pushing but not yet 40, isn’t a millennial but has a related theory, which he explained to me by way of anecdote. In June 2017, Klock taught an Olio on Neutral Milk Hotel, the indie-rock band with an intense fan base, where he dissected the band’s lyrics like he would a poem.

Then, he made everyone turn off their phones and played the entire 40-minute album In the Aeroplane Over the Sea beginning to end, which he said was a beautiful experience, “like a prayer.” Afterward, someone came up to Klock.

“I’ve never listened to music without doing anything else.”

n a Wednesday night at the end of October, Zumtobel hosted a get-together for Olio volunteers at his apartment in Brooklyn. He called it a brainstorm for Think Olio’s future, but emphasized there would be nachos.

Zumtobel was slicing eggplant to toss into the topping and sipped on a Budweiser. “This nacho party was a weird idea,” he admitted, “[but] we always have to be different.”

Not long after, a new volunteer named Bianca showed up. She had responded to the call for volunteers after her first Olio by writing, “I love the concept of continued learning over a beer.” She said she’s attended many adult education-style lectures, but they tend to be mostly women. She thought the beer was the reason for Olio’s relatively even gender ratio.

Over the next hour or so, an impressively diverse group of 16 people trickled in. (One stylishly dressed guy from Portugal was just visiting New York but happened to meet Kurfirst that day, who extended an invitation.) The only

area the group wasn’t very diverse in was age. Everyone was right in that 25 to 40 range.

In typical Olio style, the social hour went on for longer than expected as Zumtobel and Kurfirst either couldn’t peel themselves away from their conversations or didn’t care to. Finally, around 9 p.m., about an hour later than planned, the brainstorm began. The group gathered in a circle around the low coffee table stuffed with books.

Zumtobel sat on the edge of the couch with Kurfirst on the floor next to him, cross-legged, adjacent to the acoustic guitar and the vinyl player and record collection.

After they made their introductory speech, during which they asked the volunteers for their suggestions on Think Olio’s 2018 road map, both the co-founders realized they didn’t have anything to take notes with. Kurfirst jotted on the reverse side of a photocopy of book pages. Zumtobel scrambled for a notepad.

After some discussion, one of the volunteers turned it back on the co-founders: What are their goals for 2018? They exchanged glances before Kurfirst rattled off a series of initiatives, including expanding their “seminars”—Olio series that go more in-depth into subjects over multiple sessions such as the link between technology and loneliness (which sold out) and a close reading of Simone de Beauvoir’s landmark 1949 publication, The Second Sex. Zumtobel nodded before cutting in with a quick fact check. “2018’s the next one, right?”

Soon, another volunteer inquired if they considered branching out from the humanities.

They’re certainly open to any subject, Kurfirst replied, but he added, “Our motivation in a lot of ways is the humanities.” This, he explained, is based on the country’s university structure where the vast majority of a student’s curriculum is within their major. “And it’s supposed to lead to a career and

then you’re just like: Wait, what just happened to the last five years of my life?” Maybe you never got to take a poetry class even though you like poetry.

“And you know what?” the volunteer, who works in advertisement and marketing, replied. “I love that. So much of the world is like, ‘Oh, get into a STEM career where you’ll have a stable job and you’ll make money.’ But like so many of us nowadays, we want to be entrepreneurs but we also feel like we need a sense of purpose that’s bigger than just crunching numbers for a living.”

The room nodded along, and the co-founders took notes. Over the hour-and-a-half discussion, lots of ideas were thrown out, some contradictory to what Zumtobel and Kurfirst had previously said they wanted to do, others right on track. (One idea that seemed to spark the imagination: Think Olio as some kind of dating service.)

But they were thrilled to have new ideas. Zumtobel and Kurfirst know a good Olio if they walk out with more questions than answers. By that measure, the evening’s brainstorm was another success.

One topic that came up was expansion. Did they plan on holding Olios outside of New York? They’re excited about the possibility—they haven’t given up on changing the world—but they need to figure out a plan. They recently traveled to Mexico City and Berlin where friends are eager to launch local Olios. They joked (or was it a joke?) that they should expand to their favorite cities first.

Zumtobel outright rejects the suggestion he sometimes hears that Olios can work only in New York. “I’m just, like, so sad to hear that,” he moaned. “So this is the only place people care about learning?”

Entrepreneur Jason Bass sits across from me at Modern Cook Shop in the Fells Point neighborhood of Baltimore. Between us lie Old Fashioneds and plates crammed with smothered pork chops, fried catfish, collard greens, and mac ’n’ cheese. Jason isn’t referring to the food. He’s referring to his business, the Treason Toting Company, which he founded about five years ago with Aaron Jones, a tailor and designer.

By “We can’t wait,” Jason also means Baltimore and its people. This city, with its working-class roots, anthemic history, and longtime racial divisions, had been waiting for things to get better. But now, Jason and Aaron can’t wait. These Baltimore-born millennials have a tote-bag company to run, and a city to make better.

During a three-day visit to Baltimore, other people said the exact same thing.

“We can’t wait.” And the city has gotten better, much better. Having previously lived in D.C. for 10 years, visiting Baltimore frequently (the two are about 40 miles apart), I thought I knew it pretty well: Inner Harbor, aquarium, Johns Hopkins, crab cakes, oysters, dive bars, Bertha’s Mussels. But all along, I had been missing much of the city.

In fact, given its recent evolution—one that seems to preserve the city’s egalitarian, we’re-in-this-together values—I had been missing the city itself. Visiting both new and lifelong residents, eating and

The vice president of marketing and community affairs for the tourism bureau Visit Baltimore, Joyner-Weems and her team have encouraged locals to use #MyBmore to tell the story of their city by highlighting the people, places, and things they love. Last spring, the hashtag was linked to 500 images. Today, there are more than 36,000. To Joyner-Weems, the postings reflect the city’s true character. “The people of Baltimore, they’re real,” she says. “When you step foot in our city, you’re treated as if we know you. You can be yourself, because that’s all we know.”

drinking, and walking among the widely varied neighborhoods that together make Baltimore Baltimore, I had my mind seriously blown.

Let me count the ways.

First, this city is one of the cleanest I’ve ever seen. Sure, no major city is immaculate, but Baltimore has made strides in recent years, and now there’s very little trash in the wrong place. Baltimoreans tell me they’re shocked when they visit other cities and find actual litter.

Second, Baltimore is being upgraded and repurposed, fixed up and reused. I had coffee in a beautiful old bank, hung out at an arts bar in a former Ford dealership, saw apartment buildings with new units converted from offices, and stayed in the posh, fast-growing neighborhood Harbor East. Local entrepreneurs, business partnerships, and nonprofits can take credit.

Which leads me to number three: It seems like everyone in Baltimore is an entrepreneur of some sort. Even the many artists, as you’ll see.

Fourth, this is one of the friendliest towns in America. Rich, poor, black, Hispanic, white … everyone treated me as an old friend, including people who had no idea I was writing for this magazine.

Fifth: Oh, wait. This last one shouldn’t be surprising. Baltimore is a bar town. It always has been, and I’m willing to argue, after visiting more of them than really was good for me, that this just may be the best bar town in America. Best dive bars by far. Best (and seemingly most per capita) neighborhood bars. Great jazz bars, Latin bars. Best speakeasy, right out of Prohibition, with better booze.

None of these people and places waited for things to happen, or for outsiders to rescue them. The Freddie Gray incident of three years ago (in which a young black man died from an injury while in police custody), and the riots that followed, get talked about throughout the city as a kind of watershed. The many changes since then, along with the lovingly preserved traditions, are homegrown, from the investments by Under Armour founder Kevin Plank to the founders of the Treason Toting Company.

Understandably, people are moving in from other places. This city is a millennial’s paradise, with a mix of shared workspaces, business incubators, and

They see that Baltimore is a bargain and an opportunity. “This city’s up for grabs,” Treason’s Aaron Jones tells me.

And we’re barely into our second Old Fashioned.

ou may know that Baltimore is a water town. But to see just how aqueous it is, it’s best to tour it by helicopter. I took an Uber to the waterside neighborhood of Canton, where 28-year-old Cait Shipley met me and took me to a four-seat chopper owned by Charm City Helicopters. The only other passengers were a young couple celebrating a birthday. It turns out Cait owns the company, including this chopper and a fancier six-passenger Bell 407GXP used during the tourist season. She introduced me to our pilot: her fiancé, Freddie Ephraim. He took us on a 20-minute aerial tour, giving an unabashed booster spiel over our headphones. We saw where House of Cards is filmed (“Not Washington!”); passed over the “real, original” Washington

Monument, a tall pedestal with the president perched on top; and, best of all, circled the harbor—bigger than the city itself, and still very much working. The sun was setting, and from the air, the city looked like a watery paradise.

But Baltimore isn’t all about water. It’s really about neighborhoods. One especially known for its nightlife is Fells Point (which, actually, sits right on the water).

Jess Mayhugh, an editor at Baltimore magazine, met me at Lobo, a neighborhood bar. The bartenders knew her, and they suggested a particular kind of Old Fashioned with vinegar for her. We ate excellent tartare and, between hugs from local habitués, talked about Baltimore and the neighborhoods.

“Does everybody call it Charm City?” I asked her.

“A lot of people do,” she said. “And not ironically either. Because it has charm.

Baltimore has this magnet quality. People who live here and leave always seem to want to return. But this city has more than charm. It has grit. We practically invented the word.”

I asked her where a young millennial making, say, $45K would want to live. “Station North, the arts district,” she said.

“And Mount Vernon. You can rent a studio apartment in those neighborhoods for under $1,000 a month.” I was skeptical; but as you’ll see, an actual millennial resident of Mount Vernon proved her right.

Having knocked off a couple of cocktails and a great local ale, we visited two more bars—including Bertha’s, home of the sauciest bumper sticker (“EAT BERTHA’S MUSSELS.”). As we left, the bartender gave me a bumper sticker.

And this was just Wednesday night. I barely made it back to my hotel, the Four Seasons in Harbor East. For a Four Seasons, it’s a bargain.

fter such a night, I needed a water cure, so I hopped on a water taxi to the National Aquarium and petted some jellyfish. The Inner Harbor still makes a great destination and is somewhat less touristy than it used to be. The vast aquarium is worthy

of the name “National,” with its unrivaled shark tank, indoor coral reef, and touchable jellyfish. Combine that with the restaurants, shops, and bars circling the harbor, and you have yourself a weekend.

I walked a mile back to my hotel where I met Megan McCloskey, director of marketing for the Harbor East Management Group. Megan came to Baltimore after living in D.C. and Manhattan, but she says it would be hard to leave. “The footprint makes everything very walkable, the people are friendly, and there is a general lack of pretense that is really refreshing,” she said. “It has the buzz of a big city while still maintaining the feel of a tightly knit community. Residents know that, and I think visitors can sense it as well.”

We took a stroll through the 12-squareblock neighborhood, which is Baltimore’s newest and fanciest. An 8-mile promenade runs through it along the water. John Paterakis, the late multimillionaire owner of H&S Bakery, bought the land in the ’90s as a favor to the mayor. The city promised it would buy the land back but never did. The Paterakis family has no

When he wants to “fully zen out,” as he puts it, “I visit the Rawlings Conservatory.”

reason to mind: The place is booming. As a mark of the neighborhood’s luxury nirvana status, a new 50,000-square-foot Whole Foods Market is opening in 2019, with 300 apartments and condos above.

It would be understandable if some Baltimore natives resented Harbor East just a bit. It’s the least Baltimore-ish neighborhood in this blue-collar, old-brick town.

But people I talked to seemed to think the fancy new construction is a good idea. “It’s good for the [city’s] brand,” Treason’s Jason Bass told me. Not to mention the local economy. When John Paterakis died in the fall of 2016, hundreds of people lined the streets for the funeral procession. Besides, the most interesting parts of Harbor East are very Baltimore, in the sense that natives built them.

After buying high-tech gear at Under Armour’s flagship store a block from the Four Seasons, I went to Fells Point to have dinner with the Treason boys. I arrived just before they did, at Modern Cook Shop.

These two big, bearded men came dressed in homburgs and beautiful clothes—Aaron had some kind of sweater-blazer thing going on. I was wearing a striped old-guy sweater and told them I was feeling underdressed. “No, man,” Jason said. “You’re doing just fine.”

I certainly was doing fine a half-hour later, when I found myself eating the best pork chop of my life. It was hard to focus on the task at hand. Finally I asked where they came up with the name Treason. “The current environment,” Jason said. “We didn’t find it acceptable.”

Aaron nodded. “I played football in high school, and I would leave practice to sew.”

He explained he was a “second-generation tailor.” He said, “People told me it was a dying industry. And my teammates made fun of me. I still have a friend who calls me Dressmaker.”

Jason: “And we thought, why don’t we do things we can’t do? You can’t listen to them. You have to commit treason.”

To my 62-year-old self, this sounded charmingly millennial. This generation happens to be the nicest in history by many measures: the most tolerant, best educated, most law-abiding. The millennial idea of treason is committing extreme cheekiness against the status quo.

In case Baltimore would like a motto to supplement “Charm City,” “Birthplace of ‘The Star-Spangled Banner,’” and “Greatest City in America”—this last one is stenciled on benches all over town—I vote for “We put our head down and do our thing.”

nd Baltimore’s thing increasingly means business.

Morgan Stanley, Legg Mason, and Pandora are big players. More than half a billion dollars in projects are under development in the downtown area alone, according to the Downtown Partnership of Baltimore, a nonprofit business consortium. Under Armour and Plank are two of the engines. “Baltimore is a city of hard work, grit, and a will to find a way,” Adrienne Lofton, Under Armour senior vice president of global brand management, told me. “This is everything Under Armour represents. Baltimore is our hometown and we sit proudly on the docks of our city.” The company has two campuses in Baltimore, including an area in the Port Covington neighborhood, a former railroad terminal on the Patapsco River.

Under Armour employs some 3,000 people in the Baltimore region, about a fifth of its worldwide workforce.

But some of the most interesting action is happening on a much smaller scale. Jason, Aaron, and I walked to the Treason store after dinner. The partners designed the interior, which just happens to have a bar behind the counter. The company has its headquarters at Baltimore City Community College, where a business accelerator has fostered seven companies, including theirs. It’s right across from the block where some of the Freddie Gray rioting took place.

In the store, I bought a bag for each of my two grown children. I commented on how my kids would love their “authenticity.” I didn’t quite know what I was talking about, except I’ve been told that millennials love that word.

“We hate that word,” Jason said. “We like ‘sincerity.’”

From shots of sweeping skylines to an otherworldly snow-covered pier, the freelance photographer captures both the dazzle and quiet beauty of the city. And the more he shoots, the stronger the bond he feels with his home and fellow locals. “Every time I would discover a new place or see views people may never have seen before in Baltimore, I would fall more in love with what I was doing,” Brooks says.

Then we went for cocktails at the Sagamore Pendry hotel, where Jason and Aaron were treated like celebrities.

And we toured the place like we owned it. The hotel is an elaborate restoration of an old beaux-arts building once used for port cargo in Fells Point. It boasts a beautiful pool, three cannons from the War of 1812 found beneath the foundations, and, of course, a big lounge. We ordered Old Fashioneds made with the local rye—Sagamore.

Both the hotel and the whiskey are Kevin Plank’s businesses, which he keeps separate from Under Armour. Plank Industries also owns Baltimore Water Taxi, a thoroughbred racing stable, and a VC firm, Sagamore Ventures. Major construction in Port Covington won’t begin until later, “but we didn’t want to wait,” Plank Industries CEO Tom Geddes told me. So Sagamore Ventures converted an old city garage in the neighborhood into a place for innovation and manufacturing. Among the new companies, there are Treason and a robotics firm run by former Johns Hopkins students. Port Covington borders some of the neediest communities in Baltimore. Plank Industries built partnerships with those neighborhoods with the idea of providing opportunities throughout the city. “It’s a priority for us,” Geddes said.

This sort of business permeation affects even the art scene. That same night, I met up with Theo George, marketing and communications manager for Baltimore Arts Realty Corporation, or BARCO. We met at the Motor House, a former Ford dealership with a bar called the Showroom. BARCO, a nonprofit real estate development company, aims to provide affordable working space for artists.

This part of the city, a neighborhood called Station North because it’s adjacent to Penn Station, is grittier and contains rundown facades. This place is an artist’s dream, like New York’s SoHo before the swells fixed it up and kicked the artists out. BARCO runs an art gallery, a black box theater seating 150, and Open Works, a 34,000-square-foot space for the arts.

After showing me around, Theo took me to a dive bar where I ordered Natty Boh (National Bohemian), Baltimore’s cheap beer.

“PBR OK?” the bartender asked, winning extra dive bar points for offering beer a step below the cheap local favorite.

Twenty years from now, after the condo developers move in and the place gets fixed up, current residents may lament what it used to be—back when real artists lived there and the community was amazing and the bars really dive. But even my tour guide through this still-scruffy neighborhood is an entrepreneur, working for an organization that puts its head down and does its thing.

W

hat’s it like for a young professional to move to Baltimore, get a job and an apartment, and commute to work?

Marissa Moss, a 20-something who works as marketing and communications manager for the Downtown Partnership of Baltimore, allowed me to see her apartment in the morning. She buzzed me up to her fourth-floor studio, filled with art she had bought at a bargain in her neighborhood of Mount Vernon. Marissa moved to this relatively quiet neighborhood, dotted with a UN’s worth of ethnic restaurants, from the Washington suburbs. She’s trying

to get her friends to move up. “There’s actually more to do here,” she says. “And it’s much easier to get to work.”

Marissa’s commute is a brisk 15-minute walk downtown to the city’s old business district. We stopped at David and Dad’s Cafe, which occupies an old bank, with a counter where the tellers used to count money. She raved about her neighborhood, where in July the city closes down several blocks for Artscape, the largest free arts festival in the country and Baltimore’s biggest event annually.

“At night, the vendors pack up and throw dance parties,” Marissa said. “They shut down Charles Street and it’s packed with people dancing, and you’re surrounded by art.” In April there’s Light City, a light festival and citywide party. Marissa proposed a dance party in a tunnel. She called it Lit City, and 450 people showed up.

She told me about life as a young professional in this city. “I’m right out of college, OK? And the first thing I notice is that people hold 4 p.m. meetings in bars.

hat evening I caught up with a guy I’d met, of course, in a bar.

Will Escalante, the bar manager for a new restaurant and nightclub at the top of the Four Seasons, took me up to the 22nd floor and showed me the views of the harbor and the city—like being in a helicopter, with Old Fashioneds. This place is called the Bygone, a brand-new, Rat Pack kind of fancy joint serving an old-style, meat-centered menu. But the place wasn’t ready to open for a couple of weeks, so we had had drinks in a different place ahead of time. Azumi serves sushi, with a line of chefs doing their raw-fish art in front of monitors that show tanks in the National Aquarium. We also stopped by Loch Bar, a seafood eatery that serves local craft beer and whiskeys and features one of the largest raw bars in Maryland. All three places are run by the Atlas Restaurant Group, which runs a bevy of high-end joints all within a few minutes’ walk in Harbor East.

Brunch at the Modern Cook Shop, where you get brunch with mimosas and a DJ. Or you can go to Charm City Trivia in bars all over town. Form a team, answer questions about Baltimore, and win drinks. Then there’s Volo City (formerly Baltimore Social Sports), where Marissa played dodgeball and then headed to a bar where the winners got free drinks. In the summer, there’s Twilight Swim in one of the city’s public pools. A $5 fee gets you into an adult pool party, with food trucks and a DJ. Wait, just to make it clear: While it’s true I wasn’t out that late on any of the nights, the only person who seemed to have trouble focusing was me. The bar scene seemed to be all about the socializing, not the drinking.

As we walked to Marissa’s office building, I asked her what she might feel about Baltimore 20 years from now. “I think Baltimore will refuse to take the charm out of this city,” she said. “I mean, look at Under Armour and all the business it’s doing.

You can see its love sprinkled throughout the city.” Besides, she said, “I would have helped curate this city. My older self will

The company’s founder, 34-year-old Alexander Smith, comes from Baltimore business royalty. His grandfather was John Paterakis, the multimillionaire baker who developed Harbor East. Alex’s uncle is the executive chairman of Sinclair Broadcasting. “It’s in Alex’s blood to run an empire,” Joe Sweeney, Atlas’ marketing director, told me. Alex opened a HäagenDazs in Harbor East right after college.

A pizzeria came next, with his first liquor license. Then he opened his first fine dining restaurant, Ouzo Bay, in 2012. Serving Greek food, it won Baltimore magazine’s award for number one restaurant in 2013.

Azumi and Loch Bar have received their fair share of accolades, too. Alex opened a second Ouzo Bay and is opening a second Loch Bar in Florida later this year.

He plans to do the same thing in Houston this year, with Dallas in 2019. By the time this guy is my age, he’ll have a monopoly on fine dining, run out of Baltimore. And I

haven’t even gotten to the speakeasy.

It’s called the Elk Room, and good luck getting in; it’s intentionally tricky to lend the place an exclusive, Prohibition feel. No sign, just a blank black door in a brick wall, with a small button. Press it and a light turns on for a waitress who will probably tell you that the bar is already filled to capacity. She’ll take your number, invite you to have a drink on the patio just outside, and call you when a spot opens up.

Inside, it’s dark with the atmosphere of a cigar bar, though no one actually smokes in the bar itself. You can order a drink with liquid nitrogen while you listen to live jazz.

Order the elk tacos or a rabbit corndog.

Then say hello to the billionaire or Treason founder on the next stool.

Having seen all those haunts, I went to Upper Fells Point, a neighborhood with a concentration of Latino residents. “Part of this neighborhood is Greektown,” says Jesús Perez. “My mother calls it Latinotown, though you can still get Greek food there.”

I met him in a tiny restaurant called El Mañanero. It means “morning person,” though I had an excellent evening burrito, along with a gratefully nonalcoholic atole, a hot cornmeal drink. Having come

I want to stay and grow with it.” Meanwhile, he can’t wait. “I’m not sitting around,” he said. The 25-year-old sits on various boards, including an organization that helps foster children, and the Baltimore Police Youth Advisory Board.

had to fly out the next morning but still wasn’t done with this city. When I’d flown in, Amy Mitkus showed me around BWI Airport. Director of operations for Fraport USA (formerly Airmall), she works with local businesses to set up shop in the terminals. Amy took me to four pop-up stalls called LaunchPads, owned and run by locals selling jewelry, cosmetics, clothing, and tea. Fraport USA provides the space, offers graphics help, and charges a percentage of the proceeds. A professor at Morgan State University offers business advice.

And, once again, the food is great. I had the best cheeseburger I’ve had in years at BWI’s Silver Diner. The restaurant, which began in Rockville, Maryland, in 1989, now has several locations in the region.

I hadn’t had a bad meal the entire time.

My work has taken me to cities all over, but no place I’ve visited has hit me like this one. I had no idea what I’d been missing.

This city has its problems, don’t get me wrong. But in three days, I didn’t meet a rude person, or see a dirty street, or talk to a single Baltimorean who wasn’t proud to live there. I expected a city on the defensive, one that slung around PR phrases like “a better tomorrow.” I found a beautiful, warm, fascinating place. One that wasn’t sitting around for tomorrow.

This itself may sound like hype. But every year, my wife and I use our points and celebrate our anniversary in a different amazing place, and this year we’re going to Baltimore. We can’t wait.

Brian worked as an oil and gas drilling consultant overseeing drilling locations in Texas. Between the two of them, neither of the Van Dycks had a résumé of expertise in the field of educational child care. Nor did they have entrepreneurial experience running an independently owned and operated business. But what they lacked in experience, they made up for with a zealous spirit and in doing all their homework to fulfill a growing need in their community.

With highlighters and post-it notes in hand, Meagan read the 222-page Texas state child care standards… four times.

“I’m a rule follower,” said Meagan. “So I wanted to know the state regulations in our industry so we could exceed expectations. Some might be surprised to know we’re self-taught, but if you judged a book by its cover, you’d think we know exactly what we’re doing, because we do. Because we did all our homework, we have confidence parents are looking for.”

The couple researched seven different franchise concepts over six months before deciding to open a school with Kiddie Academy. Kiddie Academy is a professional, award-winning and accredited child care company, and the franchisor also met a personal standard: the organization aligned with Meagan and Brian’s values, ethics and commitment to their community.

The Van Dyck’s chose to build their community in a “small, big town” near Texas A&M University at the Kiddie Academy of College Station. If Kate Gould’s five-year plan had panned out, she’d be a partner in a dental and medical brokerage firm with eyes on taking over the business. She didn’t achieve those goals … and she couldn’t be happier.

Now, the Texas-based mother of four spends her days ridding northwest Houston of outdoor pests as the owner of a Mosquito Joe franchise.

“I’m running my own business and making my own decisions.

There’s great freedom in that,” Gould says. “At the same time, I’m not reinventing the wheel and have systems in place that allow me to provide the best customer service to my neighbors.”

Her paramedic husband, Paul, chips in when his schedule allows, and her kids are involved as well.

“My children have a much better sense of what it means to work hard and be rewarded,” she says.

For 29-year-old Jeffrey S. from New Jersey, searching for a summer gig to complement his house-flipping construction company led him to Pool Scouts, a high-end cleaning, maintenance, and repair service for residential pool owners.

“I was looking for a seasonal franchise I could run out of my home,” he says. “I was interested in Mosquito Joe, but Pool Scouts really impressed me as well.”

Mark Wayne of Clarkston, Michigan, grew up in an entrepreneurial family, where payroll and business expenses were regular topics at the dinner table. So, naturally, he founded his own company in 1988—a retirement plan consultancy called Freedom One. He led the firm for 24 years before selling his interests to another financial advisory group and retiring a year later.

After a brief period of retirement bliss, Wayne got the itch to start again from almost scratch, so he started researching franchise opportunities. “I missed the quick

decision-making and fast-paced environment of a new startup company,” he says. A friend introduced the concept of dog daycares, and although Wayne admits he was skeptical at first, he says the success of the pet industry swayed him.

According to the American Pet Products Association, U.S. households spent an estimated $69.36 billion on their pets in 2017.

Wayne interviewed a dozen different dog boarding and daycare facilities before meeting with management from Dogtopia. He was immediately impressed. “I knew that when you combine a strong team with a strong industry and sprinkle in some serious passion,

good things are going to happen,” he says. Wayne followed his intuition and opened three Dogtopia locations in less than a year.

Owning a business again has allowed Wayne to experience the “daily excitement” of running and growing a company. Perhaps the biggest growth he’s seen over the past three years, though: his passion for dogs. “They’ve taught me what unconditional love really is.”

The Ph.D. in Business for Executives program at Oklahoma State University might resemble an MBA or doctor of business administration degree, but this degree plan is designed for a specific kind of business leader.

“We look for executives who have had significant career success and who have an interest in research,” says program director Dr. Toby Joplin. “People who just want to add three letters to their name are not a

great fit because it’s hard work, with a lot of rigor involved.”

The program attracts business men and women from across the U.S. and many countries around the world, and from both large companies and small startups. Students are required to attend classes in Stillwater, Oklahoma, three days a month for 10 months out of the year. The in-person monthly residencies are supplemented by real time online interaction with faculty. The program can be completed in three years.

“To better make data-driven decisions, many business executives are returning to research universities to earn a Ph.D. in business,” Joplin says. “A doctoral degree equips the graduate with the analytical skills to leverage the enormous amount of data available to maximize the opportunities for their organizations.”

Graduate Greg Miller, the CEO of a Chicago-based technology services company, turned his research into a book, The Circle Blueprint: Decoding the Conscious and Unconscious Factors that Determine Your Success, which he co-authored with Jack Skeen and Aaron Hill.

“It’s just really fascinating to take theory and psychometric validation and put the two together to create applied science that solves regular folks’ problems,” Miller says. “What I got at Oklahoma State were the tools to be able to do that.”

AJ McLean,

My grandmother. She passed away in 2001. I’ve been in the business since I was 3 years old, and she took me to every audition when I was a kid. I loved being onstage, and she was by far my biggest fan.

She was also my biggest inspiration. In her 20s, she was a jazz pianist and a singer, but she got stage fright and could never truly perform. She kind of gave up on her dream, but when she knew that I had something, she was, I think, living a bit vicariously through me. She pushed me to be the best that I could be.
