Gary’s Greeting
Enjoy the Journey! My wife, Carol, and I have two grown daughters, and every summer when they were growing up, we vacationed at the beautiful beaches of the Florida Panhandle. Every year we drove (Southwest didn’t fly there at the time!). It’s more than 700 miles and takes a good 12 hours from Dallas. From the back seat, the girls asked me every 10 miles, “Are we there yet? Are we there yet?” I think it’s human nature to be impatient. We all want to get to the destination—especially when it’s the beach! Over time, I found I was interested in the journey: the precious chance to talk to
my wife; listen to forgotten music; view the Atchafalaya swamp; and marvel at the great southern pine forests through Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and finally, Florida. I enjoyed the journey. Still, you need to have a destination in mind. There’s a story about a farmer, riding in his tractor, pulling a plow, and plowing his fields in perfectly straight rows, without any technological aids. With him in the cab is his young grandson—astute enough to see how perfect his grandfather’s rows were. So, he asked, “Grandpa, how do you make each row so straight?” Grandpa answered, “I
pick out a faraway point on the horizon, and I aim for that point.” All roads lead nowhere if you don’t know where you’re going. Throughout one’s life, the destination may change, maybe multiple times. But the lesson has stayed with me: Keep your eye on your destination, and enjoy the journey. I always find the beginning of a new year to be refreshing and inspiring. It’s a good exercise to set goals and to focus on how you will achieve your goals. Southwest has a bold vision to become the world’s most loved, most flown, and most profitable airline. While that is a longterm, visionary aspiration, our daily focus is on how we will achieve it—and that is through the Reliability of our airline and the Hospitality of our People. Life moves at a fast pace. We all want to get to our destination. But my hope for you today is that you sit back, relax, appreciate some world-class Hospitality delivered by the most caring People in the industry, and enjoy the journey. Thank you for flying with us!

Southwest Makes Fur Fly
Traveling with pets is easy thanks to our policies. At Southwest Airlines, we know some of the best travel companions are our canine and feline friends, so we welcome cats and dogs to fly with you in the aircraft cabin (provided they meet sizing requirements). We hope to make your travel experience with your furry loved one simple and easy. Your Most Valuable Pet will travel with you in-cabin, and must remain in a pet carrier under the seat in front of you. On
the day of travel, you must bring your pet to the airport in an approved pet carrier. Our pet fare is $95 each way per pet carrier. Pets travel on a first-come, first-served basis, so you must make your pet’s reservation in advance by calling 1-800-I-FLY-SWA (1-800-435-9792). Remember, pets are only permitted to travel on domestic flights. We also have the accessories you need to complete your trip. Southwest: The Store offers a great selection of pet travel gear at SWAthestore.com. From a Southwest-branded pet carrier that fits under the aircraft seat to pet collars and leashes, these adorable items are sure to make your pet’s trip more comfortable. You’ll even see some of these items on the adult dog “players” in Animal Planet’s first Puppy Bowl Presents: The Dog Bowl, which airs on Feb. 3. Can’t wait until then? Tune in to the Animal Planet Puppy Bowl channel on Southwest flights via the free entertainment portal to catch an exclusive sneak peek of the Dog Bowl and additional Puppy Bowl content. Flying with your furry friend is a breeze on Southwest, and we’re here to welcome you—and your pet—on your next flight. Community Outreach
SUPPORT TEAM
Helping the Southwest Way
Southwest supports communities affected by tragedy in 2017. The last few months were challenging for many communities across the globe. Between August and December, we saw catastrophic hurricanes, severe wildfires, devastating earthquakes, and horrific mass shootings. Our hearts are still with those impacted by these tragic events. Southwest Airlines serves many of the communities working to rebuild, and we consider these places home and their residents family. From shipping supplies to areas devastated by the hurricanes to providing flights to reunite separated families, Southwest stepped forward in multiple ways to lend a hand. Southwest Employees have a reputation of providing support to their communities. Along with allowing Customers impacted by Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria to change existing reservations without penalty, Southwest operated more than 65 relief flights to help evacuate people. Throughout the year, Southwest partners with various disaster response organizations, and these partnerships
were quickly put into action after the storms. Southwest supported our nonprofit disaster relief partners with additional donations, tickets, and supplies, which were deployed for recovery efforts in Texas, Florida, and Puerto Rico. These groups included the American Red Cross, Team Rubicon, All Hands Volunteers, and Americares. Altogether, Southwest donated more than $600,000 to aid in relief efforts and recovery. Additionally, our Customers donated 232 million Rapid Rewards points to these partners. Although the horrific shooting in Las Vegas did not have an operational impact on Southwest, Las Vegas is a community we have proudly served for 35 years. To help support those impacted, Southwest provided flights for family members and victims of the shooting. In appreciation of the heroic efforts and bravery of the Las Vegas first responders, Southwest donated a total of $35,000 to the University Medical Center Foundation at UMC Southern Nevada, Firefighters of Southern Nevada Burn Foundation, and the Friends of Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Foundation. We are proud of our Employees and community partners for coming together to aid those affected. As we continue to rebuild, our Heart will always be about giving back and empowering our People to support those in need. —Laurie Barnett, Communications & Outreach

You Made Our Day WANT TO SHARE YOUR STORY? Have you witnessed an over-the-top act of Southwest Airlines Employee kindness? Let us know at Southwest.com/ contact-us.
We are a military family and flew another airline from Ankara, Turkey, to Munich, then to D.C., and then to Atlanta. We were traveling with two dogs and had a lot of difficulty getting from D.C. to Atlanta; one of our dogs was sent to ATL before us as cargo. When we got to ATL, my husband and boys took our luggage and headed to get our SUV that was shipped earlier from Turkey. My daughter and I, along with our smaller dog, took a taxi to get our other dog out of cargo. We got Jack,
LEAN ON ME
Today, as a super nervous flyer, I experienced the worst turbulence of my life. My husband, Jason, was across the aisle with our daughter, Kenley, sleeping in his lap. Flight attendant Javier Mercado Lopez noticed my distress and not only sat next to me, but also helped my baby and let me squeeze his arm while I cried on his shoulder. (Yes, I cried—it was that bad.) There are a lot of reasons why Southwest is my favorite, but Javier is now the greatest one. —Kristin Fawver

Dear Southwest,
our dog, and then found a patch of grass along the parking lot that separated the parking lot from the main street. We set up camp with the dogs’ kennels and their bag with food, water, and their dishes. After about 40 minutes in the heat and humidity, freight agent Larry Kirk walked across the parking lot to see if we were OK; he also brought us water. It didn’t matter to him that we were not Southwest customers. He saw us out there in the heat and brought us some cold water because it was a decent thing to do. After my husband finally came to get us, I went back over to Southwest Cargo to thank him. We were almost at the end of a very long journey, and we were beat! We will never forget his act of kindness. —Janet Warnock

CAPTAIN POPPINS
I received a text message from a number I didn’t recognize with a picture of my children on their flight. I thought maybe it was a passenger letting them use their phone, but to my surprise, it was the captain of the flight! Captain Daniel Miller sent me photos, and I couldn’t have been more blessed to know my babies were safe. He contacted me not knowing how much this eased my mind to know they were safe. I want to give a shout-out to Southwest Airlines for hiring not just anyone to be part of their team, but individuals with compassion and love. —Nicole White PART OF THE FAMILY
During a recent flight, I noticed that flight attendant Lisa Williams was especially pleasant and helpful. She came through the cabin extra times with drinks and snacks, and she always had a smile on her face. I commented, “You must be new?” She said, “No, I’ve been with the company nine years.” Later on, my wife asked her
about the complicated task of getting from the airport to Washington, D.C. Since we are in our seventies, she offered to drive us to the Metro stop. Despite being up since 1 a.m., she waited while we retrieved our luggage. We had a very pleasant ride to the Red Line stop, and she would take no payment from us. It really feels like you are part of the family. Thanks, Lisa and Southwest! —Tim Chapman HONORING CHASE
What started as a simple “hello” from my son Blaize to Captain Bryan Patterson and First Officer Joel Schofield on our flight home to K.C. ended in an invite to the cockpit. The pilot asked what brought Blaize to D.C., so he told him about his brother Chase and that we were traveling to attend the T.A.P.S. Memorial Day event. The pilot began the flight with an announcement that he was dedicating Flight 1795 to the memory of Senior Airman Chase Gibson. Thank you, Southwest Airlines, for honoring Chase and for making Blaize’s day. —Sunny Klein
GO SPARTANS
I recently traveled from PHX to DAL for business, and when I picked up my bags in DAL, I discovered that my Michigan State Spartans luggage tag was gone. I figured it got lost due to normal handling, but I joked with my wife that likely it was stolen because an MSU tag has significant value. While on a trip the following month, I was contacted by my son in regards to a letter that had been sent to me from First Officer James Shomock. To my surprise, inside was my missing MSU luggage tag. First Officer Shomock had written a letter about him growing up in Michigan and included that he had visited the campus. This luggage tag could have understandably been discarded in a normal course of business, but it wasn’t. Thank you, Southwest, for employing such caring employees. Thank you, First Officer Shomock, for your care and consideration in what might seem to be such an insignificant matter. Lastly, go Spartans! —Steve Fullerton

MAKING NOTES
Trying to create something gives you big respect for creators.
Dear Reader, When I was in third grade, my teacher said I was talented in a way that sounded like an insult. “You have the gift of gab,” Mrs. Johnson said. She liked how, during my presentation on whales, I skillfully used the word “baleen” in a sentence. I didn’t want the gift of gab. I wanted to paint murals on the sides of buildings, or invent things like my engineer dad, or write songs to perform in front of admiring crowds. But I couldn’t draw a straight line or handle a tool without harm to myself or others. I could hold a tune but doubted I could write one. You know the old expression, “Give me a child until he is 7 and I will show you the man”? I was 9, a late bloomer. Still, what I was at 9—or, rather, what I wasn’t—became what I’m not today. Instead, this early awareness that I lacked the talents I admired most turned me into a huge fan of people who can paint, invent, or, especially, write songs.
30 Southwest january 2018
F1_edletter_DE.indd 30
The idea of trekking into nature and using its inspiration to come up with something amazing gives me a sweet yearning feeling that, well, I can’t wait to hear the song that Conner Youngblood created in the story on page 44. When I told Mrs. Johnson I didn’t want the gift of gab, she said, “Well, maybe you can take your words and become a writer.” She suggested keeping a journal and writing about myself. Having heard the phrase “you are what you eat,” I went home and wrote down what I had for lunch: a bologna sandwich. I called my journal “Lunch,” and continue writing in it to this day. It’s not inventing or songwriting, but I’m grateful for those words. And for Mrs. Johnson.

Read Eric’s story online at southwestmag.com/ bully-and-thebuddhist/.
A GOOD FIND
Eric Steuer’s story, “The Bully and the Buddhist” [November 2017], was well-written and brought me back 30 years. I, too, was a relatively shy kid who preferred a book over a basketball, and I feared the kids in my grade who were quintessential bullies. Except for a few times, I generally evaded them and mostly observed them. I have regrets about not standing up for kids who were bullied. At the time, I did not have the skill set or fortitude to intercede. Today, I try to make up for it when I see opportunities in my life to stand up for people. Eric also characterized the feelings of a child very well. As a parent of a 9- and 11-year-old, I have to remember that the issues that cause anxiety for my kids may seem trivial or small to me (since I have 43 years of context), but they are significant for them in this moment. To Eric’s point about his son, Franklin, we all would like our children to have the tools to stand up for themselves. Harder yet, we need our kids to also stand up for others. Good work, Eric.

Dear Editor,
Longform shared Eric Steuer’s story about talking with his childhood bully. It was very touching, as I had many similar experiences growing up. I thought for a minute on what amazing, brilliant compliment I could pay him, but couldn’t think of anything better than this: I could relate to every word, and it really, really made me feel something. How many times does a story you find on Twitter do that? Rarely.

of us keep our New Year’s resolutions.
Sorry to ring in 2018 with such dreary news, but according to a survey conducted by Statistic Brain, only a fraction of us feel successful in meeting the goals we make when the calendar resets. “We try to be superhuman, and when we’re not, we think we’re subhuman,” says Joseph Ferrari, a social community psychologist at DePaul University. “With your resolution, focus on interim goals: What do you hope to achieve by March? Make it attainable, and post it. Go on social media and tell people what you’re hoping to do.” The good news is that 58 percent of us do stick to our guns through January. And if you don’t make it through the next 11 months, well, there’s always next year.
CALLING CUPID The survey also found that 4 percent of respondents resolved to find the loves of their lives in 2017. Here’s hoping wedding bells are ringing in 2018.

In the 1800s, Travelers Rest, South Carolina, was a place for wanderers to take a break, water their horses, and enjoy a warm meal before journeying across the Blue Ridge Mountains. Transportation has improved, but Tandem carries on that tradition. Drive 20 minutes north from Greenville, or work up an appetite peddling 11 miles along the Swamp Rabbit Trail (which runs past the creperie). Either way, you’re rewarded with coffee and crepes delivered in cheerful digs—think twoseater bicycles and pops of yellow in an old brick post office. Can’t decide between sweet or savory? Locals love the Lumberjack: a ham, bacon, egg, and cheese combo topped with béchamel sauce.

ORDE R THIS
Double Dutch Take a quick look at the cocktail list at Sundry and Vice in Cincinnati, and you’ll notice a pattern. There’s the Red Rover, the Truth or Dare, the Chutes and Ladders, the Mother May I (topped with sprinkles!). Each drink is inspired by the bartenders’ favorite childhood flavors, and then named after a classic game (watch out for the Spin the Bottle). For bartender Jakob Kramer-Jensen, that meant recreating a carrot, thyme, and ginger dish his mother used to make. Fresh carrot juice gets a kick with aged rum, and ginger syrup brings both sweetness and spice. A garnish of thyme adds one more twist. Now finish your vegetables.

of recruiters don’t consider cover letters important when hiring an applicant.
PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANN CUTTING
To whom it may concern: A survey conducted by Jobvite has brought to our attention that the people hiring us think cover letters are obsolete. According to Rachel Bitte, Jobvite’s chief people officer, that’s because recruiters are dealing with more applicants than ever and a faster hiring process. But even without a cover letter, standing out is still possible. “Smart applicants can get across the same message through thoughtful curation of their social media pages,” she says. “Recruiters are going to check your profiles, from LinkedIn to Instagram. But they aren’t looking for embarrassing or disqualifying photos; they want to know if you’ll make for a good culture fit.” Get the picture?

The Broad’s upcoming exhibition, Jasper Johns: ‘Something Resembling Truth,’ opens Feb. 10 in Los Angeles.
OUT TAKES ON VIEW We have two plateglass windows that allow visitors to look directly into where we store paintings. The beauty of that is if there’s a loan going out or restoration work going on, that’s all on display.
Less is more when engaging an audience, says The Broad’s founding director. We’ve tried to redefine what a museum is, especially a contemporary art museum in the 21st century, and it comes back to transparency. It’s about creating a welcoming environment by having as few barriers as possible. For example, we don’t have a desk in the lobby where people line up to get a ticket. Our visitor services staff uses mobile devices so they’re free to interact with the public in a very direct way. We train them for
almost 50 hours before they go onto the floor, so they’re educators as well as guards of the collection. Say a visitor is lost in the moment and they reach out to touch an artwork. Instead of scolding the visitor, our staff turns these moments into a recognition of interest. I think that’s part of our success: We emphasize human interaction. Visitors should come here and get a sense that their curiosity is going to be stimulated and satisfied.
ARTFUL JOURNEY The public is often surprised at the logistics that take place behind the scenes. My friends and family enjoy my stories about the trials of shipping artwork and what it’s like to be a courier on a cargo jet. PHOTOGRAPHY BY ADRIAN GAUT

in the morning. But when it comes to brainstorming, it’s the opposite. It’s better to brainstorm in your off-peak time because you’re less vigilant and not as good at keeping out distractions—which can lead to being more openminded and more creative. The sweet spot is in the late afternoon, around 4 p.m.”
Time It Right
Mood and daily routine play a crucial role in decision-making, says expert Daniel Pink.
How does timing affect your career, say, when asking for a promotion? “If you want something or you’re making an ask, then you should have the conversation earlier in the day or after your boss has taken a break,” says Daniel Pink, author of When: The Scientific Secrets of Perfect Timing. “Similarly, you’re better off asking on a Monday versus a Thursday, or after your boss comes back from vacation. The reason is that, in general, most people’s mood is better in the morning, earlier in the week, or after a break.” When’s the best time to hold a brainstorming session? “Research shows that for headsdown, analytic-type work it’s better to do that during your peak period, which, for most of us, is
42 Southwest january 2018
F1_solution_kt.indd 42
What if you don’t have control over your schedule? “You still need to be aware of your optimal and suboptimal times. Let’s say you’re a night owl—one out of every five people are—and you have to be at work at 8 a.m. You can take some preventative measures, like making your to-do list in the evening when you’re more alert, or if you have an early meeting with your boss, go for a 10-minute walk outside beforehand. Research also shows that doing something good for someone else, like offering to help carry something or buying a colleague coffee, can boost your mood. When you do have time protected during your peak, don’t fritter it away on emails.” It’s never a good time to give bad news, but can better positioning help? “Before writing the book, my instinct had been to give the good news first, but if you ask people what they want to hear, four out of five people say they want the bad news first, then the good news. If given a choice, humans prefer endings that elevate.”

The ducks take flight in front of our buzzing airboat, one by one, pattering their webbed feet across the flat water as if it were a runway, until thousands of them lift into the October morning sky. At least one type of bird has a different approach. These are grebes, which are kind of like ducks but not exactly like ducks because they have lobed toes, and the kind we’re seeing is the western grebe. A few of them make a half-hearted effort to fly away from our boat—flap-flap-flap, flap-flap-flap—before saying to heck with all this noise and diving below the surface—kerplunk. A thing that happens when you spend
time with ducks is that some duck-loving person, probably a guy named Bob, will eventually ask you if you have a favorite duck, and if you were to make me choose one duck-like bird to have from this day forward, I’d probably say the western grebe. It has kind of a Zorro look, with a pale neck and a black streak that wraps from its eyes around its head like a mask. My companion on the trip, a gentle singer-songwriter from Nashville named Conner Youngblood, also is a fan of grebes. But after spending five days with Conner at Utah's Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge, I feel informed enough to tell you that he probably likes the American avocet better. We’ll get to them later. Conner’s music and wildlife refuges make good companions. His voice sounds

like a soft breeze, and he surrounds those vocals with a world of instruments, floating from banjo to harp to soft synths to a trumpet sound he makes with his mouth. His range has helped him build a devoted online audience, and he’s recorded with Linkin Park and toured in Europe. He’s finishing up his debut album with the label Counter Records, due out this year. He’s here on Bear River chasing waterfowl and inspiration for a song about nature, which may or may not complete the new album. A nonprofit called Sustain Music & Nature arranged the trip through its Songscapes program. The idea is simple: A musician goes to a public land for four or five days, and then writes a song about the experience. A videographer films the trip and puts together a music video. The hope
is that the songs will inspire a new generation of public land stewards in an era when nature and stewardship are hard to squeeze in, what with all the time it takes to gaze into phones. The 28-year-old doesn’t fit most of the stereotypes of his generation. You could say he’s more of a diving duck than a flying duck. He’s brilliant, a Yale graduate who approaches every conversation with more questions than answers. His phone is a flip phone, and he rarely turns it on. He takes pictures with disposable 35 mm cameras. His Instagram feed is filled with shots from those

He stops at public lands whenever he can. Once, he passed by Badlands National Park in South Dakota. Afterward he checked into his hotel and searched through Google Images of the park. He couldn’t believe what he’d missed. “I thought I didn’t have enough time to stop,” he says, repeating a line we’ve all said, “and when I looked it up and saw how beautiful it was, I felt this regret.” He wrote a song, “The Badlands,” about that lost opportunity. He went back to the park for the music video. In it, there’s a short clip of a rabbit running into a hole and another of a deer prancing off. Someone at Nike saw the video and purchased those shots for a LeBron James ad. Things break that way for people who pay attention to things the rest of us miss, and in this world of distractions, Conner treats paying attention as a job. In the four nights we room together in a bunkhouse with no internet, he is the only person who never turns on his cell phone. He keeps things grounded during a production process that doesn’t always feel natural. During the trip, a reporter from the local public radio station drops by for
a day. A photographer comes for another two, along with an art director and an assistant. The videographer, a young man named Tazer, shadows Conner the entire time, often asking him to stage scenes. At one point Tazer asks Conner to sit in a dining-room chair in shallow water at sunset, because what’s more natural than that? Betsy Mortensen and Harrison Goodale spend two days here. They’re the

co-founders of Sustain Music & Nature. She has a background in conservation biology and he’s a musician, and they figured they could put their skills together. Conner’s trip to Utah is the fourth Songscape experience. Videos and songs for the first three have already been released. “We want this to be a song that the band would play at a show,” Goodale says. “That’s what’s going to draw in people. If
a band that you really love just came out with a song that was like, ‘We love birds,’ you’d be like, ‘What is going on?’ It can’t just be a token song for the refuge.” Within the first few minutes of dropping our bags in the bunkhouse, I’m reasonably certain Conner won’t let that happen. He picks up a book about birds and starts studying. “They even describe the sounds they january 2018 Southwest 49

make in writing,” he says. “I don’t know. How do you read bird? I wonder who decides how to spell these out.” His curiosity shines through in his music. He can play 20 instruments. “But only about seven or eight really well,” he says. Many of his songs are about nature, including the brisk narrative “The Birds of Finland,” which traces a year through birdsongs and reminds the listener not to let seasons slip away. So here he comes again, watching and listening to birds, waiting for them to reveal to him a song.
REMEMBER OUR DUCK-LOVING friend Bob? He’s Bob Barrett, the refuge manager for Bear River. He’s friendly and curlyhaired, and has a sandy beard. He has two kids, and Bob loves birds. A lot. On our first morning on the refuge, we hop in a van for a tour with Bob. Almost immediately, he beeps the horn at a ring-necked pheasant in the road. Bob laughs a big laugh as it runs off. He’s asked us to try and count at least 20 individual types of birds on the trip. “That’s one!” he says of the pheasant.

Within minutes, we’re checking off more. White-faced ibises and red-winged blackbirds and great blue herons; coots and killdeer and pelicans; American wigeons and American avocets and Canada geese (don’t you dare call them “Canadian”). And over there’s a ruddy duck. “Those are my favorite ducks,” Bob says. And over there, “A huge flock of canvasbacks! White with red heads! Wow!” He explains that the cinnamon teal ducks are interesting because they’re among the first to migrate. Predators in these parts are few—raccoons and skunks that prey on eggs, and maybe the occasional coyote that preys on raccoons and skunks. The biggest problem is invasive
plants. There are Russian olive trees; they don’t belong here. Neither do the salt cedars. But the worst are the phragmites, 6- or 7-foot tall plants with long reeds for stems and fluffy tops like a brush. Louise Brown, a master naturalist with the refuge, and her husband, Steve, can take a good set of binoculars and identify just about every living thing on the refuge. Louise can speak bird, too. When she sees a killdeer, she rings out, “Kill-DEEE, kill-DEEE, kill-DEEE!” Conner smiles when he hears that, and he scribbles something in a notebook he carries with him. He takes notes throughout the trip, keeping a list of words that might help build a line in the january 2018 Southwest 51

song. A bird refuge is full of catchy lyrics, with fresh phrases and consonant sounds and multi-syllable words flying around. “Are those shovelers?” he asks, pen in his hand. They are. About halfway out into the 80,000-acre refuge, Bob explains something that will stick with Conner. He points out a flock of American avocets. They’re string-legged shorebirds with beaks that turn up at the end so that they can scoop up food. They move in a group, a whole flock, walking across the water, kicking up insects for the next bird in the line to eat. “One thing about nature is cause and effect,” Bob says. “Everything has a reason.” Conner fixes his eyes to this flock. Later he’ll tell me that he loves how they move together, almost as a unit, as they walk through the water, each one stirring up food for the bird behind it. “But then,” he wonders, “does the one in the front get nothing?” LATER THAT EVENING, sitting on a rock at 9,300 feet, well above most of the birds he’s come here to witness, Conner plucks at the cold steel of his banjo strings.
We’re watching the sun set over the valley below. The refuge fans out in front of us, all patches of water and marsh. To get here from there took about 90 minutes, and at times I wasn’t sure whether we’d make it. An intern from the refuge, Nina, drove. Dune buggies passed us, one with a dead goat tied to the back of it. During some of the more treacherous curves, as our tires inched closer to the edge and a long tumble into the valley below, my hands got damp and I gripped my knee. Conner fell asleep. When a bump jolted him awake, he muttered something about Bonnaroo, the well-known music festival in Tennessee. “Sorry, I guess I was dreaming,” he said. Conner doesn’t drink, not because he’s sworn it off or anything, but because it hurts his voice. He doesn’t smoke. Best I can tell he runs the same speed—chill—all the time. “You’re the only person I know who could sleep on a drive like that,” I tell him when we reach an overlook near the top of Willard Peak. “Was dreaming about music,” he says. He doesn’t know which instruments he’ll use for the Songscape song yet, but for some reason he can’t get “You’re a Big Girl Now” out of his head. It’s a 1975 Bob Dylan song about a lovesick person, and it includes several lines about birds. But Conner says the sound is what keeps coming to his mind: Dylan has a version of the song in which an acoustic guitar moves in a slow tempo across the words, until a harmonica slides in at the end. He sits on the rock with his banjo and looks out. A cold front came through last night, bringing the season’s first snowcap. “Hurts,” he says after plucking a few notes. It’s the only time during the entire trip that I hear him complain. Each spring in northern Utah, the snow on top of the Wasatch Mountains melts and spills down the faces of the hills. Much

of that water flows into the Bear River, the largest river in the Western Hemisphere that doesn’t flow into an ocean. The river drops into the Great Salt Lake, the largest saltwater lake in the Western Hemisphere. Because the Great Salt Lake is a terminal lake—meaning the water flowing from the river has nowhere to go—much of the water evaporates in the summer, leaving only the salt. And then, of course, fresh water comes back down again in winter as snow. The Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge runs alongside the town of Brigham City, which sits at the base of the western face of the Wasatch Range and about 10 miles north of the mouth of the lake. The mountains take on a red shade and loom over the town. About 15,000 years ago, this entire region was underwater as part of Lake Bonneville. The waters receded over time, leaving what we now know as the Great Salt Lake, but Bonneville’s water level is still apparent if you look at the mountain range—a smooth ridge runs horizontally across the mountains’ midsection.
Conner notes the flood in his book. Eventually, he’ll draft a potential first line for the song: “Flood come and go.” All that history can’t come close to telling the story of this sunset. Neither can photographs from Conner’s disposable cameras or any scene in a music video. Some things, you have to see, feel, hear, and smell for yourself. Taste, too. Conner hops down from the rock and reaches toward the earth for two fingers of snow and drops them on his tongue. JUST THREE DAYS later, on the last full day of our trip, the air is warm again. Conner finally has time to do something he’s talked about doing all week: fishing. We head to Walmart to get a pair of three-day Utah fishing licenses. We’d been living in the same house several nights by this point. We’ve watched a movie each night, pulling one from the stack he checked out from the library. The film on the first night was the sci-fi movie CONTINUED ON PAGE 65

A community of mentors propelled one pupil from a humble Alabama home to the White House.
The Education of Eric Motley
Eric Motley has lived the American dream, in part because so many people dreamed it for him. The first member of his family to go to college, he graduated from Samford University in Alabama, went on to receive a Ph.D. from the University of St. Andrews in Scotland, and then became the youngest appointee in President George W. Bush’s White House. Today, he’s an executive vice president of Washington, D.C.’s Aspen Institute, an organization that brings together diverse leaders in an effort to solve critical problems in society. But none of those achievements would have been thinkable if not for the love and guidance Motley received from his caregiver grandparents (“Mama” and “Daddy”) and countless members of his neighborhood, Madison Park, a tight-knit enclave of Montgomery, Alabama, that was founded in 1880 by freed slaves. His new memoir, Madison Park: A Place of Hope, is a valentine to the place and the people who shaped him—and the true meaning of community. These passages focus on pivotal moments in Motley’s education and reveal what can happen when, as Motley says, people decide to be responsible for one another.

The November afternoon that I brought home a letter from my first grade teacher,
Mrs. Heikamp, Mama was so alarmed she immediately called Aunt Shine. “We’ve got a problem,” Aunt Shine agreed. She hung up the phone, came to our house, and delivered a stern lecture to me about my “unacceptable” performance. The idea was woven into our everyday conversation: “Is that going to help you prepare for college . . .” With so much reinforcement, I couldn’t help but make this my overriding goal. Everyone in Madison Park knew of the Motleys’ dream for their little boy—and my plan to fulfill it. In church the next Sunday, Aunt Shine suddenly stood, asked the pastor for permission to speak, and announced: “Brothers and Sisters, we have a serious problem. Little Eric Motley has been moved from the Rabbits to the Turtles. Any books you’ve finished reading, please bring by George and Mossy’s house. Little Eric doesn’t have a library, and he needs to practice.” Everyone turned to look at me. I was mortified by the unwanted attention. But within a few hours, community folks started dropping by until soon our porch looked as if we were having a paper drive. There were 1945 Life magazines and a few way-back issues of Jet bundled together. I had Encyclopedia

Britannica, Volume “L,” 1932 edition, and a Farmer’s Almanac predicting the weather for each day of 1948. Someone brought a dilapidated volume of Gwendolyn Brooks’ poetry. Talk about eclectic. Learning was taken seriously in Madison Park. Too many older citizens had been denied a formal education and exposure to the arts and ideas. Perfect attendance in school was expected. When the Madison Park School was functioning, the teachers, who were neighbors and fellow parishioners, were a part of the community and enjoyed a relationship socially and civically with parents. And Mama and Daddy exhibited a far greater level of engagement with my academic performance than most. With my low marks in reading identified and books and periodicals at hand, Aunt Shine mobilized a volunteer corps of six ladies, all of whom had been retired from teaching for 15 to 20 years. A rotating team of two came by our house every afternoon to coach, drill, and encourage me. They didn’t stop at reading. They must have figured while they were at it, why not tutor me in math too? A couple of months in, Mrs. Frankie Lee Winston recognized that if I were falling behind in my studies, there had to be other kids in the community as bad off—or worse—than me. With a few small donations from townspeople to buy workbooks, flash cards, and other materials, they started a community-wide tutorial program in our church to lift up Madison Park’s children. Every weekday from 4 to 5 o’clock in the afternoon for more than two years, about 60 boys and girls from different churches came to sit at the elbows of the volunteer staff. Those ladies knew the benefits: a generation of children elevated out of their circumstances.
I
didn’t simply “grow up.” I was raised. Mama and Daddy had little money but enormous influence. They possessed in abundance all the things that count— optimism, integrity, patriotism, common sense, faith in God, respect for others, and a strong work ethic—and passed those on to me. My grandparents were smart enough not to spoil me, wise enough to indulge my love of books, kind enough to chauffeur me to debates and speech contests, devout enough to get me to Sunday school, and inspirational enough not to allow me to become an angry young man. Mama was disciplined and extended this to those around her. She governed the affairs of the house with a strong hand, and we obediently obliged. I was expected to make my bed as soon as I got out of it, to dress for the day before interacting with others, to be fully dressed at all meals, to habitually reserve a half-hour of quiet for prayer and reflection, and to consistently err on the side of formality rather than familiarity.
Mama saw to it that any tendency on my part to be lazy, slothful, grungy, or rebellious was never given oxygen. My grandparents imprinted on me a love of order and routine. From them I learned that the way one starts the day largely dictates how it will unfold. A core tenet of the Motley household was that to rise early was to embrace the newness of the morning, with all of its promise and opportunities, before others started to create noise. Sociologists debate the importance of nature versus nurture in childrearing. I would cast my lot with nurture. Whatever my birth parents bequeathed to me biologically has paled beside the years of intense yet patient rearing

that my grandparents invested in me. They imparted an inheritance beyond all estimation and far beyond all deserving. And they had an entire community that helped. Until junior high, I’d had a flock of hardworking teachers, yet until I met Susan Mayes, I hadn’t encountered the one who would change my life. She took me on as a special project in her speech class. Mrs. Mayes required us to deliver a “demonstration speech” at the beginning of each semester explaining how something was made or operated. I demonstrated the art of making a straw broom, as I had often seen Mama do. I showed how she cut the straw, firmly braiding and tying thin wire and widely cut ribbons to make individual stalks of straw strong and unified. I received an A and offered Mrs. Mayes the broom. I was beginning to understand how much a good orator could achieve. Knowing I would need scholarships for college, Mrs. Mayes helped me enter every speech competition possible during seventh and eighth grades. My teacher, who was white, drove me around as though we were reversing the roles in Driving Miss Daisy, although I sat in the passenger seat next to her, not the backseat. january 2018 southwest 59

12/11/17 11:14 AM
Almost every Saturday, she would pick me up in her green Mercedes and then glide down country roads to competitions. Mrs. Mayes had a way of demanding the best, and with her help, we won almost every time. Only as an adult have I realized what she imparted to me, that tall, skinny black kid with untested hopes: her confidence, a sense of worthiness, her standard of excellence and expectation that I would

benefit from competing with others as ambitious as I. She did it for no extra pay and no personal gain. Twenty-nine years later we remain friends. Someone once said that good teachers are with us for a lifetime; certainly the lessons they teach us are, and in some instances the teachers are as well.
T
wo weeks before Christmas and one week before my 12th birthday, an
unfamiliar knock at the door interrupted our quiet evening. A young man stood at the screen. Daddy invited the stranger in and led him to a chair by the open fire. The stranger revealed that he was a college student who’d traveled almost two hours from the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, selling books to finance his education. “Is this your son, sir?” he asked. “This is our grandson. We’re raising him,” Mama and Daddy replied in unison. “Well, I hope he likes school, because I have a lot of books that can help him with his studies. I’m selling a lot of encyclopedias and dictionaries this Christmas.” Mama confidently told him our home already had a dictionary, though she didn’t tell him it was two decades old. We didn’t have a full set of encyclopedias, only random volumes. “What else is in your bag?” Daddy asked. “Well, sir, I also have a book of knowledge,” the stranger replied, as if saving the best for last. He artfully pulled from his bag a large red leather book, embossed with gold letters and decorated with speckled leaves. “Knowledge?” I asked, moving closer to inspect this treasure. “Yes, the Basic Knowledge is kind of like having 20 encyclopedias in one book. It covers everything you want to know about the world—American history, science, technology, art, and music.” “The whole world in that one book?” Daddy asked. “Yes, sir,” came the response. “You want to look at it?” I reached my hands out and reverently held the book up to the light. Its red-leather binding felt sacred. I’d never seen such a book—so full of facts. “How much does a book like that cost?” Daddy asked. As though apologetic, the man said in a low but firm voice, “$60.” I was stunned. Sixty dollars was a lot in our household, especially

Daddy never talked much about that, or about his role ferrying bus boycotters to and from the city for 381 consecutive days, but he called them “our heroes” who, despite being ordinary people, found the strength to be courageous. Daddy kept the faith despite the prejudice he had encountered. He seemed never to divide the world into black and white—good and bad—his conscience was too large, his heart too generous. By my childish standards, the old Montgomery Public Library downtown rivaled the great Library of Alexandria. It was a magnificent cathedral of information. I never knew what unusual fact, what teasing photograph, whose quaint story I might stumble onto. I’d begin in the poetry section and select armloads of books, often to the librarians’ whispers: “There’s the Motley boy.” They knew I had a mental map of the shelves. One Saturday, after rambling about, I found my way back to my table on the main floor. My eyes were drawn from the page to an older, fragile-looking white man at a table across from me. He was in a wheelchair, with a black attendant at his side. He moved delicately. With bright, piercing eyes hooded by heavy brows, he struck me as a man bearing heavy burdens. I returned to reading. But sneaking a glance now and then, I’d find Wheelchair Man flipping pages casually. Our eyes met awkwardly several times. I knew him from somewhere! Once, nodding, as if to say, “Good day,” he seemed as curious about me as I was about him. As closing time approached, a silence added a reverential quality to the nonverbal rapport that had developed between the Wheelchair Man and me. Suddenly I knew. As I gathered my books and walked to the circulation desk, we nodded—a parting benediction. I was so eager to tell Daddy, I took the stairs two at a time,

and headed to the car, where he’d been waiting for two hours. I opened the door to his usual questions—“What have you been up to in there? Find any good books today? Any Robert Frost?” “Yes, sir,” I answered. I laid my satchel on the rear seat and blurted out, “You’ll never guess who was in the library; who kept looking at me today.” Daddy managed a dramatic pause before asking, “Someone special?” “Yes, sir,” I said emphatically. “It was Governor George Wallace!” “Do you mean the George Wallace?” he asked. “Isn’t that something? You just came face to face with one of the most notorious former segregationists in the country. “Some people believe he learned that he had to get the support of black voters to win elections,” Daddy said. “But I think he changed his mind about black people after a gunman tried to assassinate him in 1972 ... It put him in a wheelchair for the rest of his life and made him understand suffering for the first time. “Do you realize,” Daddy asked, 9:23 AM “that if you’d been born 10 years earlier, at the start of Wallace’s first term, you wouldn’t even be allowed in this library? Now, you can sit at the same table with him. Sometimes justice comes slowly, but it always comes.” Deep within Daddy was this abiding conviction that we are saved by hope. He didn’t erupt into a diatribe about a former segregationist or gloat over the fact that Wallace came to suffer. Instead, he used the occasion to celebrate the fact that now I could freely use the same library from which Wallace would have banned me. As I came to adopt that same hope, my grandparents’ dream for me to go to college became my mission.

Super 8, the second was the ’90s teen flick 10 Things I Hate About You, and the third was a grim showing of the film adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s book The Road. After each movie, Conner questioned the ending, wondering how the story would’ve been different if, say, we never saw the alien, or the guy never got the girl, or if the kid hadn’t made it … or had made it … or, gosh, what the heck happened to the kid? Conner would think about it overnight, wake up the next day, and have more questions as he poured his morning bowl of Froot Loops. He loves candy, too—Skittles and sour snakes and such. And he loved to talk about his sisters, all five of them. My point is, I know Conner Youngblood pretty well by the time we enter the hunting and fishing section of the Walmart. But when he signs the papers for his fishing license, I learn I don’t even know his first name: Kneeland. That night, I search online for Kneeland Youngblood and up pops a story about his father, also named Kneeland, who just happens to be one of the most prominent businessmen in Dallas. Two generations before him, Kneeland’s grandfather (Conner’s great-grandfather), Beadie Conner, was turned away from the gates of Princeton in the 1920s because he was black. Decades later, Kneeland enrolled at Princeton and was determined to not let his family down. He didn’t do drugs, didn’t smoke, and pursued a career in medicine as an ER doctor. He was good at that career, and good at many other things, too. He helped raise money for Ann Richards during her winning run for Texas governor in 1990, and she later appointed him to her tax reform committee. Kneeland left medicine in 1998 and co-founded Pharos, a private equity management firm. Still, until recently, Conner’s dad was fairly private about his work. That changed after he turned 60 and realized that the story of a black man becoming one of the most successful people in the country might help others. A couple of years ago, Kneeland returned to Princeton and had
the parking lot near the gates turned into a plaza in honor of Beadie Conner. That’s the story behind the family name Kneeland Conner Youngblood writes on that fishing license, just before he grabs a tub of giant worms from the fridge. We don’t catch anything over the last two days, but we talk a good bit about family. He only recently realized just how impressive his dad is. The week before this trip to Utah, he says, he saw him speak for the first time at Fisk University in Nashville, the school Beadie Conner attended after being turned away from Princeton. Conner and Kneeland got to visit the president’s office and see some of Beadie’s old report cards. “None of my fans know about that side of my story,” Conner says. “To them I’m just Conner Youngblood the musician. … But in terms of my life, you’re always looking up to your parents. It’s not competitive

as much as it’s a team, and you want to produce. I think they enjoy what I’m doing more than I do.” His mom was actually the one who instilled the love for nature in her kids. Sharon is a board member for the World Wildlife Fund, and was always the one who helped with science projects, or let them play with dry ice. Conner started playing the banjo at 13 or 14 and picked up other instruments soon after. He recorded his first songs during the summer before college, and several more during that first year at Yale. He was an American studies major,

but by 2010 a few songs started to get shared online, and soon, “I was becoming a musician without realizing it.” He graduated from Yale in 2012, moved to Nashville, and has been gaining popularity since then. Most of his songs are about places and experiences. He’s stayed away from relationships until he started work on the new album. Even there, it won’t be a standard boy-meets-girl story. Instead, he may write about the young woman he saw standing alone on a hill in the distance when he was at Craters of the Moon last year. “I still wonder about her,” he says. Or maybe /Conner, with he’ll write about Steve and the young couple Louise Brown we saw sitting next to dirt bikes on the top of the mountain on our trip. He wants to tell stories we’ve all heard before in his
own way. “It’s been a long process but very natural at the same time,” he says of his career. “Every time I’ve done something that I thought was good, usually people respond. I’ve seen better songs create better opportunities.” THE MOSQUITOES are out as we take one final drive through the refuge on the last night. They’re swarming and biting and flying into the car windows. This is when the videographer wants to shoot Conner in the chair in the water. Conner swats and swats, but eventually they get the take they want. Back in the car, Nina, the intern, rolls down the windows and floors the gas pedal in hopes that the mosquitoes will blow out. When we’re about 3 miles from the bunkhouse, she looks in the rearview mirror and says, “Oh, my God.” We all turn around and see deep reds and pinks streaking across
They did all their homework Meagan worked in human resources. Brian worked as an oil and gas drilling consultant overseeing drilling locations in Texas. Between the two of them, neither of the Van Dycks had a résumé of expertise in the field of educational child care. Nor did they have entrepreneurial experience running an independently owned and operated business. But what they lacked in experience, they made up for with a zealous spirit and in doing all their homework to fulfill a growing need in their community. With highlighters and post-it notes in hand, Meagan read the 222-page Texas state child care standards… four times. “I’m a rule follower,” said Meagan. “So I wanted to know the state regulations in our industry so we could exceed expectations. Some might be surprised to know we’re self-taught, but if you judged a book by its cover, you’d think we know exactly what we’re doing, because we do. Because we did all our homework, we have confidence parents are looking for.”
The couple researched seven different franchise concepts over six months before deciding to open a school with Kiddie Academy. Kiddie Academy is a professional, award-winning and accredited child care company, and the franchisor also met a personal standard: the organization aligned with Meagan and Brian’s values, ethics and commitment to their community. The Van Dyck’s chose to build their community in a “small, big town” near Texas A&M University at the Kiddie Academy of College Station. Meagan and Brian were aware of the challenges of venturing into an unknown-for-them industry, but knew they would succeed with the support of Kiddie Academy, their experienced and knowledgeable franchisor. Brian says parents often tell them, “this is where y’all belong.” Learn about Kiddie Academy at www.FranchiseKA.com or by calling 410-777-5352.

the sky above the mountains. Conner asks Nina to stop. He grabs his disposable camera and his fishing pole. The videographer follows, but this time, the scene is all Conner doing what he wants to do. He tosses a few casts and looks out at the sunset. Ducks are making their last flights of the day. No matter how many times I’ve seen the sun drop away, it always amazes me that this is how a busy day ends. Here, the final call is the quack from a duck before a long night, or the distant sound of a boat engine racing toward a trailer to go home, and then darkness silences their worlds until tomorrow, whatever that brings. As we walk to the car I start to get excited about those tomorrows, excited to see what Conner says about this trip in his song, which is scheduled to be released Jan. 1, the same day this story is published. It’s exciting, because when we disconnect and go out to places like this, these precious public lands, we experience them in a way that’s all our own. And after spending this time with Conner and these ducks and mosquitoes and sunsets, I feel informed enough to tell you that he’s one of those people who can witness the same scene you witness, but still make you eager to see what he saw. We head back to the bunkhouse. One more movie before we go: Black Swan, the story of a ballerina, played by Natalie Portman. After it’s over, the musician on the couch asks questions just like he always does. But this time, he solves the first rather quickly: During the final scene, Portman’s character wears makeup—her neck is white and she has a streak of black that wraps from her eyes around her head. “She’s not a swan,” Conner says, laughing. “She’s a grebe. No, wait. She’s a western grebe.” Michael Graff is a writer and editor in Charlotte. Reach him at michaelngraff@gmail.com.

Sensible Meals

LOSE WEIGHT
The strategy for shedding pounds in the new year often goes something like this: gym memberships, grilled chicken, and green things. The problem is, that regimen gets boring for a lot of people. It’s unsustainable and you’re off the wagon by Super Bowl Sunday. Your best shot at sticking to your weight loss goals? Meal prepping. Especially when someone else does it for you. Sensible Meals ships chef-prepared, portion-controlled grub straight to your home. CEO Ingrid Rinck, a personal trainer with more than 20 years of health and fitness experience, crafts carefully detailed menus each week to conform to specific calorie counts. To help clients stick to the program, Rinck offers a smart mix of clean “diet” foods (chicken, ancient grains, and kale) and comfort “fun” foods (M&M pancakes with smoked sausage). Unlike other meal delivery services, your time commitment in the kitchen will be minimal. There are no elaborate recipes. If you can open a freezer and operate a microwave, you’re set. Rinck says Sensible Meals is also the most affordable food prep service nationwide, which makes it easier to commit to the plan for
long-term success. Clients who have been faithful to the program have lost weight (some up to 80 pounds), and kept up with their new healthy lifestyle. If you’ve tried eating right and exercising, but you still can’t seem to tip the scales in your favor, perhaps it’s time to look at underlying health conditions that might be making it more challenging to lose weight. “For most men and women in midlife, the inevitable decline of your naturally occurring hormones adversely affects your health,” says Dr. Steven Hotze of Hotze Health & Wellness Center in Houston. Hotze says low hormone levels can negatively impact your mood, energy, and metabolism, making it difficult to maintain or lose weight. While we can’t avoid these natural changes, there are steps we can take to curtail them. One option is bioidentical hormone replacement therapy, which uses hormones that are molecularly identical to endogenous hormones (think progesterone, testosterone, et al.) lost during the aging process. By giving the body back what it’s missing, BHRT can restore your energy and metabolism, and ultimately get your weight loss goals back on track.
FEEL YOUR BEST
Why is it so difficult for resolutionmakers to stay the course? Setting unrealistic goals (say, 25 pounds by spring break) is sure to derail you. More attainable aspirations, like simply feeling better, might have more staying power. A study of baby boomers between 45 and 65 found that people define wellness as either “living free of illness or chronic pain” or “feeling hopeful, joyful, and energized.” That research was commissioned in part by Kevin Kelly, CEO of Civana, a collection of sustainable wellness resorts that offer affordable access to healthy food, fitness programs, restful accommodations, and authentic spa therapies in uncluttered environs—miles away from the

stresses of everyday life. If a little urban detox is what you seek, take a few days of PTO this spring and discover the future of wellness travel. Civana’s first property is set to launch in February in the appropriately named Carefree, Arizona. For men still feeling sluggish and stressed even after a week-long vacation, it may be time to consider an option that will reinvigorate you from the inside out. Mdrive, a line of five different supplements formulated by Phoenix-based DreamBrands, may be the answer. Each Mdrive product is specifically designed for different types of guys, from elite athletes to blue collar Joes. A key ingredient in Mdrive is an ancient Ayurvedic root called ashwagandha. In clinical trials subjects taking ashwagandha experienced lower stress, improved cognitive function, higher testosterone levels, and increased endurance. Whether your aim is to compete athletically, have more energy, or simply feel better, there’s an Mdrive product that will help you reach your goals.
QUIT SMOKING
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, while the percentage of American adults who use cigarettes has dropped in the last 10 years, smoking remains the country’s leading cause of preventable disease and death. If you’re one of the millions of Americans resolving to kick the habit for good in 2018, the team at Swedish Radiosurgery Center in Seattle recommends going one step further: Get screened for lung cancer. High-risk individuals (55-74 years old with a 30 pack-a-year smoking history, in good health, and who are either still smoking or have recently quit) should get regu-
lar screenings. If early stage lung cancer is found, the center offers a non-invasive, stereotactic body radiation therapy called CyberKnife. This robotic treatment delivers precisely targeted beams of high-dose radiation, preserving healthy tissue surrounding the tumor, and resulting in few, if any, side effects. “The radiation options for early stage lung cancer have evolved quite far over the last decade,” says the center’s Dr. Christopher Loiselle, “and the results are extraordinarily good: 90 to 98 percent of early stage tumors are controlled with SBRT, and patients find the treatment generally quite easy to go through.”

OWN YOUR OWN BUSINESS
For the entrepreneurially minded, setting concrete goals—and sticking to them—is key to success. Jack Johnson, co-founder and CEO of The Franchise Insiders, says 2018 is projected to be a good year. “There appears to be a strong push to help businesses succeed,” he says.

The Franchise Insiders help clients plan financially, vet franchise opportunities, connect with appropriate financing, and ultimately choose the best franchise match. Johnson says industries like senior care, fast casual food, and service businesses should continue to
prosper in the new year. “Senior care is a safe, low investment, high-return franchise opportunity that really helps people,” he says. As the senior population grows, the demand for in-home care does too. One particularly attractive option is Home Care Assistance. What sets them apart? For starters, Home Care Assistance caregivers are trained in a pair of science-based approaches aimed at improving the quality of life for seniors. What is Mdrive?
Mdrive is a daily supplement for men looking to increase strength, stamina and overall vitality.
So, I quit a high paying job formulating for a Fortune 500 company, founded DreamBrands (Mdrive’s parent company) and began the journey of making uncompromising, genuine, top-of-the-line supplements for men and women over 40. It became our mission to help improve quality of life. Now, 14 years later, our products incorporate the best science nature has to offer. We refer to our formulas as custom compounds because they contain many natural extracts and key ingredients that work in synergy. Our goal was to eliminate the guesswork of going into a health food store and buying a lot of supplements with just the hope of results.

Mdrive Workforce was developed for those busting their butt everyday. Men who start the day early and finish late. Featuring time-released caffeine to give you the energy you need without the crash and three premium clinically tested ingredients that support healthy testosterone, reduce mental stress and maintain healthy cortisol levels.
How is Mdrive different?
Mdrive formulas are custom compound blends of powerful, unique, highly concentrated bio-active ingredients sourced from herbs, mushrooms, and roots. Most are then combined with key minerals and vitamins. Key targets include support of healthy testosterone levels and cardio functions. The botanicals in Mdrive work in synergy to strengthen and support the internal core by providing the building blocks that allow the body to perform at its peak.

physical exercise, socialization, and a sense of purpose, with the aim of ultimately enhancing and extending clients’ lives. The Cognitive Therapeutics Method™ incorporates activities designed to keep aging minds sharp. Owning a Home Care Assistance franchise can be not only financially lucrative, but can also provide a sense of meaning and purpose. Matt Nyberg, president of Home Care Assistance of Nebraska, says, “Because we are with our clients for so many hours per day, we have the opportunity to really become a positive force in helping them live the life they want.” Another booming category heading into 2018: health and beauty. Franchise owners in this segment are seeing profits as consumers are willing to spend more disposable income on things like blowouts, boot camps, and body waxing. LunchboxWax, a cheeky, fullservice, speed-wax salon, is raising eyebrows in the industry. According to Jamie Dillon, vice president of marketing, the young company has nearly doubled in size every year since it started franchising in 2013. Pattie Wells owns and operates a LunchboxWax in Meridian, Idaho, and is prepping to open her second salon this year. “As a LunchboxWax franchisee, I feel sure of myself, secure in myself, and confident that I’m doing what I can for my present and my future,” Wells says. “I love owning my own business and being financially secure, but I also love being connected to this network of smart, successful men and women.”

Does Your Hand Shake When You… Drink a glass of water? Write a note? Dial a phone number? If so, you may have a condition known as essential tremor. Our team at the Swedish Radiosurgery Center has successfully treated hundreds of patients over the past five years — using Gamma Knife, a nonsurgical, FDA-approved approach to treat essential tremor.

YOUR BODY YOUR HOPE
No matter where your priorities lie in the new year, you’ll need to allocate your hours wisely in order to achieve your goals. The easiest way? Invest in a wristwatch. A Daniel Steiger watch from Timepieces USA is a handsome— and affordable—option to help keep you punctual. As the manufacturers and distributors of Daniel Steiger, Timepieces USA eliminates the middleman and markup you see in other luxury brands, passing on the savings directly to the consumer. Mixing style and functionality is part of the modern man’s challenge, and a Daniel Steiger watch will help you not only get to where you need to be on time, but also look your best. Today’s smartphone society may be quick to disregard wristwatches as a redundancy: Why should I buy a watch when my phone tells time? It’s a decent point. But aren’t our phones the biggest time suck we own? You check the time, only to be distracted by a text or email or social media. By learning how to manage your time effectively this year, it will no longer manage you.
Your immune system may be the key to beating cancer. lmmunotherapy, a new approach to cancer treatment, is bringing hope to cancer survivors everywhere. lmmunotherapy works by empowering your body’s own immune system to correctly identify and eradicate cancer cells. This approach has been used to effectively fight many types of cancer, with new research leading to greater hope each day. Speak with your doctor and visit standuptocancer.org/immunotherapy to learn if immunotherapy may be right for you. Stand Up To Cancer is a division of the Entertainment Industry Foundation (EIF), a 501(c)(3) charitable organization.

One Question
Amanda Kessel,
what’s been your biggest professional challenge? Before the 2014 Olympics, I got a concussion. I recovered and felt great going into the games, but afterward I had reoccurring symptoms. I started seeing different doctors and it was a long road to recovery. In the beginning, I was like, Why is this happening? Why am I not getting better? I realized negativity wasn’t helping, so I started looking at things in a more positive way. I’d never want to do it again, but it made me a stronger person. Now, anytime another athlete reaches out, I share things that helped me and hopefully give them a little bit of encouragement.
PHOTOGRAPHY BY NANCIE BATTAGLIA
Next month, Amanda and the U.S. Women’s National Hockey Team go for gold at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea.
