From figures to forms Manuelita Brown reshapes her story while preserving those of others Manuelita Brown works with her hands—fueled by her mind. “Give your brain a chance, and it will do the job. You just have to have confidence and prepare it,” she says. After decades as a math teacher, and earning her master’s in psychology from the University of California San Diego, Manuelita changed course and began creating art. The order of numbers and the complex workings of the mind gave way to new inspiration—sculpting people’s lives in bronze. A frequent subject is the AfricanAmerican experience. Her artwork celebrates the human spirit: a mother tenderly embracing her infant, a relentless Sojourner Truth fighting for equality, a cleaning woman taking a rare pause to rest. “The story of people is usually told by what’s left behind,” she says. “I want to leave a record about those people who came before me or those who are here with me.” UC San Diego alumni are risk-takers and innovators—explorers of our universe, our world and our humanity. With so many dating options out there, why did you choose It's Just Lunch?

D: I travel a lot for work, so I’d read about It’s Just Lunch in airline magazines, and then I ran into a friend who was attending the wedding of an attorney in town who’d met her husband through IJL – the fact that those two events happened so close together, I thought I should call them. At the end of my work day I didn’t want to come home and go look at profiles online. I felt like it was a waste of my time. M: I had gotten a divorce and then did online dating for a while before joining IJL. I joined mainly because it’s a lot of work to do the online thing. You have to keep up on it. You never really know who you’re going to meet. IJL was just a lot easier. They found people for me based on what I was looking for and I just had to show up. You don’t have to do much work. What would you tell a friend who was apprehensive about investing the money on IJL?

M: I’d ask, “Are you looking for a relationship or not?” With online dating you never know who’s on the other side of the line. IJL had better quality people who were interesting to me. It truly was an experience that was tailored for me. Describe your first meeting with an IJL matchmaker?

D: She asked me questions about

myself, what I like to do, what I want in a relationship, whether I’d marry someone who already had kids, how important religion is, that kind of thing. It

would take much longer to find out someone else’s answers to those questions through online dating. This was black and white.

Tell us about your first date with one another.

D: I never went on lunch dates because I was always busy at work so I met Michael after work at a downtown restaurant. The conversation just flowed. I was attracted to him from the start. I remember it turned into dinner.

Hospitality in Action Recently, a young traveler had a bloody nose during her flight. When our Flight Attendant realized the Customer could use some assistance, they quickly jumped into action and took the child from her seat, stopped the nose bleed, and helped clean her up. Our Flight Attendant then took the Hospitality one step further before helping the Customer back to her seat. Knowing the Customer would be more comfortable in a fresh shirt, our Employee proceeded to dig

into their personal suitcase to retrieve a T-shirt for the young girl to change into and then insisted that she keep it after the flight! This small act of kindness surely improved this Customer’s experience onboard our flight and as she went about her day. We seek to hire People who have a Servant’s Heart and are “others oriented.” In another case, one of our new hires going through initial training was in a car accident. Without hesitating, her classmates developed a schedule to take turns driving her—and she didn’t miss a day of class. Instinctively rallying around their fellow Southwest Family Member tells me that this class understood the meaning of Southwest Hospitality from day one, and that warms my heart. Later in this magazine (on page 134), you can read about Southwest’s Diversity and Inclusion Team, who recently won our coveted internal Heroes of the Heart Award. This Team epitomizes one of the many ways we offer our own unique style of Hospitality, both internally and externally, and I’m immensely proud of them and the work they do. Cuando nuestro Asistente de Vuelo se dio cuenta de que a la Clienta le vendría bien un poco de ayuda, reaccionó rápidamente, llevándose de su asiento al niño con el que viajaba, deteniendo el sangrado y ayudándole a limpiarse. Antes de ayudar a la Clienta a regresar a su asiento, nuestro Asistente de Vuelo llevó la Hospitalidad más allá. Sabiendo que estaría más cómoda usando una camiseta limpia, nuestro Empleado buscó en su propia maleta una camiseta para que la joven se cambiara de ropa, y le insistió en que la conservara después del vuelo. Este pequeño acto de amabilidad sin duda

mejoró la experiencia de la Clienta a bordo de nuestro vuelo, además de su día. Buscamos contratar Personas que tengan un Corazón de Servicio y que sean “orientadas a los demás”. En otro caso, una de nuestras nuevas Empleadas, quien estaba tomando el entrenamiento inicial, sufrió un accidente automovilístico. Sin dudarlo, sus compañeros desarrollaron un calendario para turnarse en llevarla, y no perdió un solo día de clase. El que se hayan reunido instintivamente para apoyar a su compañera, Miembro de la Familia Southwest, me dice que este grupo ha entendido claramente el significado de la Hospitalidad de Southwest desde el primer día, y eso enciende mi corazón. Dear Southwest,

A few weeks ago, I was having dinner with two friends at a restaurant in Florida. While waiting for our table, I explained that I was dreading an upcoming flight because of my many concerns, including mechanical failure and birds hitting the engines. The waiting area was pretty crowded, so the gentleman next to us overheard our conversation. He introduced himself as Chandler Sheeler, an aircraft maintenance supervisor at Southwest Airlines in Florida. He told me about the re-

dundant systems on aircraft, as well as the regularly scheduled maintenance and engine replacement program at Southwest. He also explained how birds, even large ones, are deflected or bypassed by the engines. Our conversation ended when we were called to our table, and I thanked him for the information. Later, as we were leaving the restaurant, Chandler approached us and asked if we would like a tour of Southwest’s maintenance facility at Orlando International Airport. I gladly accepted. When we arrived, Chandler gave us a tour of the repair facility, and we saw a new engine being prepared for installation on a 737. We were very impressed by the work environment, the professional attitude of the mechanics, and the presence of a quality control supervisor while the mechanics worked on the engine. Chandler showed us the turbine fans and explained that they were made of high strength material, and that the design of the engines deflects the vast majority of bird strikes away from the critical intake areas. It was only a 20-minute tour, but it went a long way toward helping me understand how today’s aircraft are designed and maintained for safety. As we were leaving, Chandler said, “I was happy to help you understand the safety consciousness that we have for our aircraft at Southwest. Sometimes the more we learn about what frightens us, the better we’re able to deal with it.” Chandler demonstrated a professional attitude and genuine pride in the maintenance facility. —Martin Wisniewski

When I connected in Atlanta, I was traveling quickly while trying to make an international flight. I was with my 5-year-old son, and when we reached the escalator, he was fussing with his R2-D2 suitcase. I didn’t realize he stayed at the top, too fearful to get on. As we got further separated, he and I both began to panic. Flight attendant supervisor Alicia Drake calmly stepped in, started counting steps so he got on the escalator with her, and held his hand. She saved my day and calmed my son! She’s a gem. —Jennifer Calabrese KINDER CARE

While flying for business from FLL to PHX, extreme weather at my connecting airport caused many, many canceled flights. I had already changed my flights three weeks before just so I could attend a field trip with my daughter, and she was counting on me to get home. As I approached the counter, I could hear other gate agents saying that there were no additional connections and we would not get out until the

next day. Customer service agent Marvin James could see I was in tears. I explained to him that my 5-year-old was counting on me to get home, and I was devastated that I wouldn’t make it for her field trip. You see, I work. A lot. It’s not that often that I’m able to participate in a field trip with my kindergartner, but I had promised her that I would be home the next day. Marvin actually cared. He did everything he could to be sure I got out that day. I ended up on a triple connect and didn’t get in until 1 a.m., but I made it home to attend the field trip. My daughter was thrilled, and we had the best time together, all thanks to Marvin. Without him, I would have been stuck in FLL another night and would have missed out on an opportunity to spend quality time with my little one. Just thinking about it makes me tear up again. I just want to say thanks to Marvin. Our kids are only young one time, and he made it possible for me to enjoy the little things with my daughter. Thanks, Southwest. PASSPORT PICKUP

When we arrived in Houston a day before our cruise, we realized that we had forgotten to bring our passports. We made an arrangement the same day to ship them through FedEx, but they couldn’t guarantee the delivery time. Our cruise check-in time was 2 p.m., and the first flight with our passports was expected to arrive at 1 p.m., with delivery by 2 p.m. We arrived at the cargo department on the day of our cruise, and the minute that the flight landed, cargo customer service supervisor Todd Hairston came running over with our passports. Then, as we were leaving and calling for an Uber, Todd offered to give us a ride. Everyone was so nice and helpful, and we couldn’t believe the service and generosity that Todd provided to us. We thought our vacation was ruined, but our luck turned around and we ended up having a great vacation—just one more reason to love Southwest. Rangers have made the park sy cial for OLD HAT

Rangers have made the park system special for 100 years.

I have never met a national park ranger I didn’t like—even though, having found professional excuses to hang out in national parks from Alaska to Florida, I have met a great many rangers. They’re all impressive to start with. I’ve met world-class alpinists among the climbing rangers at Mount Rainier; softspoken, crack-shot enforcement rangers in Yosemite; search-and-rescue rangers who save lives by rappelling out of helicopters; and history rangers who can tell you everything about Harriet Tubman. Every one of them seems helpful and in love with the work. Up to a point. Every year, a couple thousand of them pay their own way to a convention called the Ranger Rendezvous. I got to attend one in Grand Teton National Park, where I went up to rangers and asked, “What’s the dumbest thing you’ve seen a visitor do?” Most answers had to do with wildlife selfies: grinning photographers sidling within the personal space of buffaloes, alligators, and other uncuddly animals. Unsurprisingly, some of your wilder wildlife resent this practice. But one ranger

from Yellowstone recalled a foreign visitor who, in a thick European accent, asked to see the “dangaroos.” “Kangaroos?” the ranger asked. “We don’t have them here.” “No, no, dangaroos.” The man pointed to a portion of a large wall map in a remote part of West Yellowstone, where boiling natural vats underlie the thin soil. This, the man insisted, was clearly the habitat of these interesting animals. The ranger looked closer. And indeed, while the visitor’s pronunciation was a bit off, the area was clearly marked “Dangerous.” Personally, I would have found it irresistible to send him there, while pointing out that the creatures in the vicinity were short-lived and prone to taking selfies. But the park ranger steered him away. Seriously: These people are saints.

Thank you for sharing the work of Rupal Patel on the VocalID project [“The Human Voice Is the Organ of the Soul,” May 2016]. By the end of the article, I was blinking back tears. Our voice is so important to our identity, our definition, and our personality when it’s there. I was naïve to the impact of it not being there, both for the voiceless and also for their loved ones. This story was breathtaking! How wonderful that Rupal Patel is “mixing colors to paint voices!”

On a flight back from D.C., I browsed through the article “The Human Voice Is the Organ of the Soul.” I sat upright and began reading in detail when I saw “Perfect Paul” mentioned. I was an education specialist for Digital Equipment Corporation back in the 1980s, and I had the good fortune of being assigned to develop a training manual for DECtalk, a revolutionary device at the time that could read text or typed input and translate it to human speech. I met Dr. Dennis Klatt, the technology specialist for DECtalk, a couple of times. Each time I was struck by how hard it was to hear him. Then a more experienced team member clued me in: Dr. Klatt was dying of throat cancer. In an incredibly ironic twist of fate, Dr. Klatt’s voice was disappearing. DECtalk had a number of voices: male,

Dr. Klatt provided the extensive knowledge and leadership to produce artificial voices that, for the first time, could come close to human speech. DECtalk would boot up with a voice through an attached sound system: “DECtalk Version 1.0 is running.” The voice was that of “Perfect Paul,” one of the many voices that the device carried. What was not mentioned in the article was that “Perfect Paul” was Dr. Klatt’s own voice, as he synthesized it when he realized that he would soon no longer be able to speak. Toward the end, in the hospital, I heard that Dr. Klatt communicated through DECtalk, since, like Stephen Hawking, he could no longer speak. Incredibly, I did not recognize Hawking’s voice as “Perfect Paul” until I read this article. I think Dr. Klatt would be gratified to know that his original voice has been reproduced and used hundreds of thousands of times, and that his work was the foundation for many voice-impaired persons.

You could say that visiting Philadelphia’s Thaddeus Kosciuszko National Memorial is, well, a walk in the park. The diminutive destination commemorates the spot where Kosciuszko, a Polish freedom fighter and military engineer in the American Revolution, rented rooms in 1797–98. And while the place may be pintsized, it’s little wonder why this little wonder is worth a trip. “When Kosciuszko died, Thomas Jefferson remarked that he was ‘as pure a son of liberty’ as he had ever known,” says Andrew McDougall, a special use coordinator at Independence National Historical Park, which manages the memorial. “Kosciuszko’s vision of liberty extended to all people, not just the wealthy.” Small but mighty, indeed.

Sometimes the fastest way to someoneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s heart is to turn to stone.

n 2004, at the tail end of a decade-long relationship, I transplanted myself from New York City to Rhode Island. Intrigued with the culture of my new home state, I spent hours alone at WaterFire Providence, an outdoor evening event where hundreds of small, fragrant bonfires burn in braziers along the banks of the river. I liked WaterFire and its downtown street festival vibe, but what kept me coming back were the gargoyles. On most WaterFire nights, street performers in elaborate theater makeup and costumes appeared as living white marble statues and gargoyles at the base of the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s World War I monument. Perched atop marble-painted wood platforms, the chalky statues blended with the backdrop of the silvery-gray monument as if carved from the same stone. Next to each statue stood a matching column with a narrow opening in the top. A dollar donation in the column would bring the statue to life and buy you an inspiring fortune or a riddle on a brightly colored paper scroll. Moving slowly and gracefully, the statue would break her pose, grandly retrieve the scroll from a pouch, and gently place it in your hand as if delivering ILLUSTRATION BY MARINA MUUN

As the gargoyles moved lithely under the nighttime lighting, their masked faces morphed from grotesque grimaces to mischievous

It would hold my gaze as if pondering its own reflection. It understood me. It was magic. grins. The gargoyles were spooky when still, but playful when approached. Surprised youngsters would often squeal with delight when the gargoyles tousled their hair with their long, slender fingers. I’d find a good spot and sit quietly for an hour or two, mesmerized by the gargoyles as I processed my breakup. Their melancholic beauty seemed to embody my pain and their slow movements, my lethargy. When I felt ready, I’d take a deep breath, climb the monument steps, stuff my own dollar in the gargoyle’s column, and bask in the circle of its mysterious gray spell. Sometimes it would touch my hair or face, sometimes not. But always it would hold my gaze, wordlessly and thoughtfully, as if pondering its own reflection. It understood me. It was magic. On a spring day eight years later, the magic of the gargoyles and statues entered my life again. Healed from my old relationship but bored with my office job, I

trolled internet job postings during my lunch break and noticed an audition announcement from TEN31 Productions—the company whose name I’d seen on the back of the statues’ scrolls. I impulsively emailed a few pictures of myself along with a long, passionate fan letter and a plea for an audition. They’d requested an acting resume, but I had no performance experience since my sixth-grade production of Oklahoma! As soon as I hit “send,” I regretted it. I’m 43—too old, I thought. Their performers are probably all college drama students. But to my amazement, two days later I received a reply with an audition time for the following week. I arrived at my audition nervous, sweaty, and cursing myself for applying. I was easily the oldest hopeful there. But when my name was called and I met the company’s creators—the original gargoyles—excitement powered me through my audition. I must have impressed them with my tai chi–inspired impressions of a living statue, because in another two days I learned I’d made the cut. Incredulous, I basked in my success and the congratulations of friends, even as a darker concern loomed. As a spectator, I’d enjoyed the magic of the characters. But once I’d learned the behind-the-scenes logistics, would it destroy the mystery? My trial performance was as a bronze statue, not at WaterFire but up Interstate 95 at Faneuil Hall Marketplace in downtown Boston. Patrick, another performer, was assigned as my producer. He helped me prepare for the three-hour gig in a quiet corner of an adjoining parking garage. After I applied opaque golden-bronze makeup to my face, neck, and hands, Patrick helped me into my matching costume: a long-sleeved, long-skirted, brown cotton pilgrim outfit with a bonnet. It was

a sunny, 92-degree July day and I envisioned both myself and the costume melting in the heat. I also feared that my foray into “living the magic” would be a dismal failure. As Patrick led me out of the cool shade of the garage and I stepped slowly in my chocolate-brown pilgrim shoes through the gawking throngs, Patrick casually mentioned that he’d recently assisted another new performer who, 15 minutes into her gig, stepped down off the platform and swore off performing forever. Patrick helped me step onto the platform. While I assumed my most statuesque pilgrim pose, intrigued onlookers formed a semicircle. Gazing into the small crowd, I recalled standing on my grammar school stage as cowgirl No. 12 on opening night of Oklahoma! and peering with awe and fear at the sea of parents’ faces in the school auditorium. Like then, there was no turning back. In my bronze pilgrim hand, I held a large hollowed-out book, also painted bronze, filled with bright blue paper fortunes. A little boy, urged by his father, stepped into the semicircle, shyly approached my platform, and cautiously inserted a dollar into my tip column. Recalling the grace of the marble WaterFire statues, I smoothly opened the book, retrieved a fortune, and placed it gently into his little hand. He gasped and stared into my face, wide-eyed, his expression an endearing blend of joy, wonder, and disbelief; the statue had moved! He ran to his father, clutching the scroll like a prize. I resumed my pose, locked eyes with the boy’s father, and winked. The man exploded with laughter. I was hooked. That afternoon I handed out countless more scrolls to other shy kids, curious adults, and bemused tourists. I ignored the rivulets of sweat that tickled my

skin. Couples debated if I was real or if I was breathing. A teenage girl timidly squeezed my bronzed hand. When I squeezed back, she ran to her friends, laughing and shrieking. A drunken man tried to put a used tissue in my book. Patrick chased him off. People stared. Kids pointed. I posed for pictures. And through it all, the magic flowed. At the end of the shift, Patrick helped me off the platform, back to the parking lot, and out of my costume. The shorts and sports top I’d worn underneath were soaked with salty sweat. I was physically drained but strangely energized. I drove home blasting dance music and singing, and even after a cool, soothing shower at home, I couldn’t calm down. It was as if the cover of my pilgrim book was the lid of Pandora’s Box, and I had unknowingly opened a direct portal to the mysterious source of the magic. I lay awake most of that night smiling, eager for my next gig. I’ve since performed at dozens of public and private events as many different characters, but WaterFire, where I discovered the statues and gargoyles, is still one of my favorite venues. One summer WaterFire evening, I performed as a white marble statue of the Roman goddess Minerva, handing out riddles from my marble-painted canvas pouch. From the dropping temperatures and thinning crowd, I knew it was almost time to wrap for the night. A woman approached my platform, alone. Small and plain, she was unremarkable except for a palpable misery that seemed to burden her steps and dim her face. She slowly inserted a dollar into my column and I grandly delivered the riddle, as usual. But she lingered, pressing the small blue paper between her palms like a child praying. Looking up at me, her eyes filled with tears as she implored, “Will this help me solve

the riddle of my life?” I spread my arms wide, slowly reached for her, and gently held her head in my hands. At my touch, she began sobbing. We stood together for a minute, her forehead just inches from my elaborate headdress, she releasing her tears and I holding the space for her to do so. When she caught her breath, I lifted her chin, looked in her eyes, and blew a kiss. Then I crossed my hands

over my heart and opened them to her. I love you, I gestured. I recognize your pain. It’s going to be okay. The woman deeply inhaled and gratefully whispered, “Thank you. On seeing the invisible infrastructure that defines our national parks.

here was a time in my life when I felt strong emotion toward a 5-foot-long forged steel bar with a bevel on one end. It weighed 18 pounds and I had recently lugged it, along with a lot of other notquite-so-outrageously-heavy tools, a number of miles up the side of a mountain. I groaned and cursed. I wondered, repeatedly and out loud, what sort of use a huge, heavy metal stick was on a mountainside. And then I grew to love it. A rock bar, as the tool is known to people who build trails, is a magical force multiplier. (Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s just a lever, really, but we all know what Archimedes

said about those.) It allows small people, like me, to make truly enormous rocks dig themselves out of the earth. It allows groups of people, rowing with the bars as though they were oars, to maneuver those rocks with what I’ll go so far as to call precision. Even though you may be deep in the wilderness and beyond the aid of power tools, with a rock bar you are mighty. You can bend the raw materials of the earth to your designs. The summer I first fell for rock bars, I was 18 and volunteering on a crew rerouting a popular access trail leading to the Appalachian Trail in Virginia. Before, I thought I knew trails: I’d grown up 20 minutes from Tennessee's Great Smoky Mountains National Park, where hiking and camping were … pretty much all there was to do. But before long I felt like Mark Twain after he learns to

captain steamboats and can never look at the Mississippi the same way. What once looked like simple tracks through the woods revealed themselves to be complex marvels of engineering, the results of the careful designs and grueling work of a whole cadre of people who live in the woods for weeks at a time and speak in their own vocabulary of pick mattocks and McLeods (both tools), of French drains (gravel sluices for managing water in moderately wet spots) and Griphoists (hand-powered cable ratchets) and corduroy (a stopgap measure of laying down a bunch of logs to give hikers a dry place to step when the mud is too overwhelming). The most iconic trails have become such fundamental parts of their home parks that they can seem like natural features, part of the patrimony of the park alongside waterfalls or vistas. The best

trails, woven gracefully into the landscape, don’t feel built at all—the carefully constructed steps and drains seem as though they’ve always existed. And many have existed quite a long time: Angels Landing was cut into the rock of Zion in 1926; the Wonderland Trail, finished in 1915; the John Muir Trail, begun the same year. During the era of the Civilian Conservation Corps, a golden age of trail building, crews built more than 28,000 miles of trails, nearly the length of 13 Appalachian Trails laid end to end. It took us some time to get the hang of hiking trails. Surprisingly, the National Park Service was 17 years old when, in 1933, the U.S. Forest Service’s annual report first listed “hiking” as a possible recreational usage for the parks. Especially in the East, a lot of early hiking trails, built by outing clubs such as the “Fresh Air Club” in New York City, ran straight up mountainsides to the nearest view, with nary a meander or switchback in sight. They were magnets for severe erosion and only accessible to people who were up for steep scrambles. Lightly on the Land, a leading guidebook for trail builders, describes the change after a former president of the Appalachian Mountain Club began to import techniques he’d learned in the West, where more gradual trails designed to accommodate pack animals were also more inviting to people: “His trails hugged the contours of the land and rose gradually up the slopes. He removed rocks, smoothed the tread, and built stone cairns to show the way. The work was done so meticulously that some of the trails are still in use today.” The general method is, too. Today, trail crews working on public lands learn that their main job is to manage two stubborn forces: keeping water off the trail and keeping people on it, thus reducing hikers’ impact to a thin ribbon of tread rather than a whole trampled, eroded forest. Rock and wood structures are good for this, and so is laboriously grading the trail. Cutting trails into a hill sideways makes it easier to get down to firm mineral soil and to find find places for water to run off (Lightly ( on the Land suggests that, if it’s not currently raining, you can roll an orange down your trail’s tread to make sure water will flow the way you want it to). Trail builders strive to make their work invisible. You’ve succeeded if the path is dry and inviting, and no one pays attention to the drainage structures or retaining walls that keep it that way. And though helicopters and ATVs and mules sometimes help drop off supplies, often you’re more or less on your own for work whose CONTINUED ON PAGE 77

In search of a place to honor the memory of my mother, I sought somewhere I could always return to.

left the trailhead in the early afternoon and followed a narrow red-dust trail out across the scrubby, tall grass of the open mesa. According to the signpost at the edge of the parking lot, it was 2.5 miles to the canyon rim. It was one of those odd, in-between April days: hot when the wind paused, and cold when it didn’t. Gray skies, but still bright enough to force my eyes into a squint. I pulled my sunglasses off, then put them on again as I walked. Rolled up my sleeves, then rolled them down again. The dry powder of the trail was stirred up in bursts as I passed, and it settled in a fine coating over the mesh of my trail runners. Though there were plenty of other visitors in Canyonlands National Park that day, I was hoping I would see no other hikers on this trail. I had hiked it twice before, and I’d always had it to myself. It was tucked away from the busier, shorter routes that led to big over-the-rim views. I was raised as a pure-blooded city kid, splitting time between my mom’s attic apartment and my dad’s narrow townhouse in Ottawa, Canada, riding the bus or hailing cabs home from bars I’d

But the week she spent in the intensive care unit while I flew across the country to join the rest of my family, while we waited on brain-activity test results, while we listened to the steady beeping and whirring of the machines that kept her breathing, while we gathered ourselves to make the decision to turn those machines off—that part felt

snuck into underage, and hanging out in coffee shops and malls. When I graduated from college, I had only ever gone camping three times. I didn’t make my first awkward forays into the wilderness until my mid-to-late 20s, and when I did, I generally did so by myself. After I moved to Canada’s northern Yukon Territory seven years

ago, intending to shed my urban upbringing and learn to handle myself in the outdoors, I had to break that habit of solitude. The Yukon’s backcountry was too wild, too empty (and simultaneously too full of grizzly bears) for a sensible novice to wander around unaccompanied. But I still cherish the chance to hit the trail solo when I can get it. It’s a greedy feeling: I love to look out over a landscape and lay claim to it all for myself. In this case, though, I wanted privacy for a more precise reason: I was here to scatter a small portion of my mother’s ashes.

much, much longer. We let her go on July 24, 2015. She was only 60. I’d known right away that I wanted to do something private, something personal, to remember her. The two of us had lived alone together from when I was 7 to when I left for college at 19, sometimes acting more like roommates than mother and child— ordering delivery pizza on Friday evenings; staying up too late talking on school nights; watching the Olympics on TV and giggling about the male athletes’ physiques—and I wanted to honor that closeness. She and my stepfather had purchased burial plots in a city I’d never lived in and rarely visited; I suspected her gravesite there wouldn’t mean much to me. I’d asked my stepdad if I could have a portion of her ashes to scatter myself, at a location of my choosing, and he’d agreed easily. After the burial, the funeral director handed me a small velvet drawstring bag and a letter from the funeral home, certifying that I had a right to carry these particular human remains around with me. The question, then, was where to scatter them. I thought about my home, in the Yukon Territory: There was a beautiful wild river that ran right through town, and I could visit it any time I wanted. But my mom had only been there twice, and it was a place where I had built a life apart from her—somehow that didn’t feel right to me. There was a man-made, murky canal that ran through the neighborhood where I’d grown up, back in Ottawa—but then, both of us had long since moved on from our lives there together.

I considered a hiking trail near Phoenix, where my mom and stepdad had spent their recent winters. She loved the Southwest desert landscapes, the alien cactuses, the hot, dry sun. She had discovered and embraced hiking in Arizona during the same years that I had been finding my footing in the Yukon wilderness. But I didn’t know much about the trail’s legal status, and I worried that someday I’d come back to visit and find towering condos or a gated golf community built over top of it. I knew I wanted someplace wild, or at least wild enough, something that couldn’t or wouldn’t be fenced off or paved over. A body of moving water. An alpine meadow. A cliff edge. That got me thinking about national parks. They’re unique in their permanence. They have a sense of stability, a promise to

endure, shared by few other places in America today, wild or urban. Nothing is ever completely certain, of course—my mom’s stroke had taught me that. But if I scattered her ashes in a national park, I figured I would have the best odds of being able to keep coming back to visit her for the rest of my life. For a while I leaned toward the Grand Canyon, which she’d seen and loved. In the end I picked Canyonlands for me, not for her— she’d never been to Utah, although she’d wanted to go, and we had talked about road-tripping there together some year during my

annual Arizona visit. It was a place I knew I’d be happy to come back to again and again.

THE TRAIL SOON LEFT the grassy, wide-open space behind and wound through a slickrock maze, the way marked by rock cairns, before dropping down below the rim. After a few twists and turns, I stopped at a point where the trail ran alongside a long, sheer drop. Mesa Arch Off to my left, I could see nothing but canyon country: corrugated red rock to the horizon. On my right, the trail tucked into a broad horseshoe fold in the cliff face. If I kept going, I supposed I would switchback down that fold until I reached the valley floor. The wind was blowing against my back as I stood near the edge and looked out; that was good. I wanted no mishaps with windblown ash flying back at me today. It seemed like there ought to be some ceremony to the event, so I picked a skinny red desert flower and tossed it in the air. Caught up by the wind, it drifted along the cliff edge at eye level for a long moment before dropping away, out of sight. I pulled the small, maroon velvet drawstring bag out of my backpack. Inside it was a smaller Ziploc baggie, filled with a fine gray dust that shimmered, faintly metallic, in the light. I walked as close to the drop-off as I dared and waited for the wind to pick up strength. As I wondered how best to get the ashes out of the bag, I had a vision of accidentally tossing the baggie with the ashes still in it, littering the park with plastic in my attempt to honor my mother. (Something I hadn’t expected about grief and grieving: how many moments of unexpected comedy it forced you into. The little things seemed funnier when everything else was sad.) Finally I held the bag out straight in front of me and jerked my arm up and forward, squeezing slightly with my fist. The ashes came out in a puff—once, twice, three times. Like the flower, each burst of dust swirled on the currents in front of me before vanishing. Soon, sooner than I’d expected, the bag was empty and the ashes were gone. I tucked the baggie and the velvet bag back into my backpack and sat down on a large rock nearby. I had expected to cry—I’d expected this moment to be wrenchingly sad—but I felt calm. I was satisfied with what I’d done. I had cried my tears and said my goodbyes, over and over again: on the long sequence of flights home, during the days spent lingering at the hospital, in the minutes when we waited at the bedside for her life to run its course, at the funeral and in the weeks and months afterward. CONTINUED FROM PAGE 61 whole point is being in the middle of nowhere: just some very dirty, sweaty people depending on mechanical advantage and their own strength. In Virginia that summer, a steep section of our reroute demanded a staircase for comfortable walking. With no access to lumber, we needed to make it out of local rocks. Unfortunately, there were none large enough nearby, so we quarried 400-plus-pound boulders—two dozen of them—on a high hillside, wrapped them in webbing, and belayed them down the mountain on a cable strung between trees. Then we maneuvered the rocks into place and set them into deep holes, so they rested on top like scoops of ice cream in a cone. We did it all with simple tools we’d packed in ourselves, and when we were done we ran up and down, up and down, up and down the staircase, and not a single rock wobbled. Sure, I didn’t shower for a month, but it’s still probably the most satisfying work I’ve ever done. After college, I signed up to teach high school kids to build trails. In the Catskills, at training, trail builders with decades of experience showed us a photo slideshow of their best works, often trails built or cut into foreboding cliff sides that most people would despair of

ever traversing. They showed us how to turn a tree into a bridge with crosscut saws and adzes, how to survey a forest for the best place to cut a path that can last. In Alaska my crew rerouted a trail that had been flooded by a beaver dam, fixed water bars broken by the freeze and thaw of the tundra, and tried to create drainage through mud so thick the students despairingly dubbed it “the elephant poop.” One day we asked some horseback riders to try out a section we thought we’d finished, only to find out that, when their steeds’ hooves sank more than a foot into the trail, we hadn’t yet dug past all the fluffy organic soil. At night, I moved massive rocks in my dreams. Some of my friends stuck to the trail building life for years, cycling through crews and seasons and parks. Some are still in it. I moved on, but I can’t hike quite the way I used to. Along with the view, I’m checking out water bars or turnpikes or cleverly positioned stairs— imagining all the work that it took some anonymous person to build and maintain them, and feeling jealous that that person probably got to use a rock bar. Investing in the future While working in corporate America, David Willis witnessed the uncertainty that comes with being an employee instead of an owner, particularly in the banking segment. He says “I was looking for a financial investment that could provide ongoing income to sustain our family for the long haul.” As a result, David chose to purchase real estate and build an all-new location with support from Kiddie Academy’s Real Estate and Construction teams. With prior business experience working for brands such as GE and Bank of America, David did a great deal of research before deciding to open his Kiddie Academy of Charlotte – Blakeney in August, 2011. He knew the market, believed in the Kiddie Academy concept, and most importantly, understood what children and parents need from a childcare center. A Change in Tempo

A Heart of the Community grant has created harmony in Cornog Plaza In historic downtown Fort Myers, on the newly transformed Cornog Plaza, Pat Maxwell and Naomi Yaeger unpack their Appalachian dulcimers and play renditions of children’s folk songs and old hymns. “This place has motion,” Pat says. “People are coming and going, but they’re also willing to stop and learn.” Naomi beams while talking about the kids who stop to try

her cardboard version of the dulcimer. “I like to work with them, to teach them a little tune,” she says. Located in the heart of Southwest Florida, Cornog Plaza was one of seven sites awarded a 2015 Southwest Airlines Heart of the Community grant. Southwest and Project for Public Spaces have teamed up to help transform public spaces into vibrant

places that connect people and strengthen communities. The plaza, which is adjacent to Fort Myers Regional Library, has become a bustling hub of activities and a place where musicians like Pat and Naomi can interact with new and old acquaintances. The grant funds allowed for the addition of new furniture, street banners, misting fans, and rocking chairs. Programs such as tai chi instruction and mural painting are available for people of all ages and abilities. “Our downtown area has come to life in recent years, and outdoor public spaces like Cornog Plaza are a big reason why,” says Becky Guttery, who brings her two sons to the plaza to enjoy the new instruments. “We can meet up to chat and play, share a snack, and take in sunshine in this beautiful outdoor space.” In the past year, Cornog Plaza and Fort Myers Regional Library have given more than 300,000 visitors the opportunity to have fun outdoors by engaging children, families, and individuals in a whole new way. what’s your best advice?

Don’t be scared of being scared. When you’re younger, you want to appear capable of handling every situation. But as I get older, I’m more and more vulnerable, and I’m less afraid to show that vulnerability. I’m not afraid to say “I’m scared” or “I need more time” or “I don’t know how to do this. Please help me.” That attitude has, in return, attracted a lot of kindness from other people, so I don’t feel like I’m alone in my struggles.
