Gary’s Greeting
Still Low Fares When Southwest first took to the skies in 1971, only 15 percent of the U.S. population had flown on a commercial flight. Today, more than 85 percent of the U.S. population has taken a commercial flight. The reason for the change is simple—low costs equate to low fares, making flying more affordable and accessible. Southwest sparked a low-fare revolution that’s alive and well today. There are a number of ways we keep costs low: We fly one aircraft type (the Boeing 737), we have an open-seating policy that helps us board and turn flights faster, we have high aircraft utilization, and our Employees are highly productive. Another less
obvious way is that we make our fares available only on Southwest.com, as opposed to other travel websites. By providing our fares only on our site, we establish a direct relationship with our Customers, allowing us to provide transparent pricing with no fees and enabling Customers to act as their own travel agent. This includes not being charged for itinerary changes or for the first two checked bags; finding the lowest available fare in a city-pair on any given day, week, or month; applying unused travel credit; and understanding the benefits of our three fare classes. As a result of our approach, the vast majority of
our Customers purchase their tickets on Southwest.com. By marketing and selling our fares directly to consumers, we avoid paying commissions and advertising fees to intermediaries, including global distribution systems and online travel agencies. We also avoid using third-party websites because they tend to favor airlines that charge fees, making it difficult for consumers to make true apples-to-apples price comparisons. As you know, a base fare on Southwest comes with a lot more than a base fare on some other airlines. Ultimately, our cost-effective and Customer-friendly approach allows us to pass savings along to you in the form of low fares. Believe it or not, there is an effort by global distribution systems and online travel agencies to have the government force all airlines to share proprietary booking and pricing data so they can profit from selling our seats. But we will keep fighting the good fight, just as we have for 47 years. And we’re going to keep offering low fares only at Southwest.com. We’re happy to have you onboard today!

CLASS ACT
Teaching the Dallas Difference Leaders in hospitality share tips
for top-notch customer service. Southwest Airlines and VisitDallas, the city’s convention and visitors bureau, partnered to host their first customer service master class: It’s Hospitality, Y’all. Held in March, the free, one-day, immersive experience for hospitality workers featured sessions led by some of the best in the business in North Texas. Linda Rutherford, Southwest’s Senior Vice President and Chief Communications Officer, said, “This class was about how we make people feel—getting back to basics and leaving an impression on visitors that will keep them coming back.” The program was built upon best practices that everyone in the hospitality industry can use to enhance the customer experience for visitors to Dallas. Phillip Jones, the president and CEO of VisitDallas, said, “Attractions may get people to Dallas, but our hospitality brings them back.” Here’s how you, too, can deliver great hospitality:
Every negative customer experience is an opportunity to flip the script. Shep Hyken, the “chief amazement officer” of Shepard Presentations, explained how to turn a Moment of Misery™ into a Moment of Magic®. Start by providing internal hospitality. Steve Goldberg, Southwest’s Senior Vice President of Operations and Hospitality, talked about creating an environment where employees feel welcome and appreciated, and then empowering employees to create that same environment for customers. Give customers what they want again and again. That’s how Carl Sewell recommends creating customers for life. Sewell, leader of Sewell Automotive Companies and author of Customers for Life, received the inaugural VisitDallas Legends Award for his focus on customer service. Throw in “surprise and delight” moments. The master class attendees weren’t expecting a high-energy welcome featuring a drum line. The participant celebrating a birthday likely didn’t anticipate a cake and a serenade from his newest friends in the hospitality industry. Go a step beyond customer expectations by creating memorable interactions. Learn more about Dallas’ outstanding hospitality at visitdallas.com. —Emily Samuels, Communications & Outreach

Dear Southwest, After boarding our plane from Houston to Kansas City, we had to deplane. While we were waiting on the new plane, Captain Dennis Meadows got on the ground and helped these sweet girls color. I love Southwest! He handled the situation very well, and I was very impressed! —Michelle Turner

CAPTAIN CHIVALRY
Recently, I boarded a Southwest flight while six months pregnant and with a 20-month-old toddler at hand. I was by myself and scared to fly the three hours, but I knew it was the only way to see family. I didn’t know what the flight would bring since my son was turning into a real wiggle worm. While finding my seat, I was greeted by Captain Stephen Roth, who was on a flight back home after several days of working. He offered to sit by me and insisted he help me with my bags and my son. He said, “I know how it is having a toddler when nobody wants to sit next to you—let me help you.” It was one of the nicest gestures someone could have given me, considering the state that I was in. In the hours that followed, Captain Roth offered to get me drinks and never batted an eye when my son was cranky. I’ve never felt so taken care of on a flight. Captain Roth continued his chivalry when we exited the plane and my son’s stroller wasn’t at the gate. He gladly pulled the strollers out of the plane for me and other patrons so that we could get on our way. Captain Roth’s small acts of kindness will not be forgotten. Thank you for instilling such great customer service in your employees. —Kyla Hemelt

ONE TEAM. ALL HEART.
In February, my flight was snowed-in a bit in Pittsburgh, delaying departure of the boarded plane. Then the captain announced that the crew was being removed to staff a more pressing flight. The passengers collectively groaned with the news. Then I noticed a seated passenger in a leather jacket, First Officer Timothy Baker, hopping up to join the flight attendants in the rear of the plane, and quickly passing out refreshments
and reassuring comments to the passengers. When he rejoined the flight attendants, I heard a bit of the conversation, which sounded like a caring family. It was very much like what I read in Gary Kelly’s article in that month’s magazine about employees treating each other like family, and treating passengers like guests. Timothy obviously believed passing out peanuts off-duty was just as much in his job description as flying an airplane on-duty. —Andy Ambrose
FLIGHT OF THE DUCK
My fiancé, Ric, and I have a silly game of hiding a small rubber duck. On a recent trip, I gave flight attendant Sheila Knutson the duck and asked her to give it to Ric sometime during the trip. She made the whole “duck” experience a flight to remember. While Ric was suspicious that I had given the duck to the flight attendant, Sheila did a great job of playing clueless. Not only did she “quack” over the speakers, but she also offered him “quackers.” Numerous times she asked me questions about the history of the duck and our hiding game—even the captain made a personal announcement to Ric about the duck. We’ll always have a special memory of this flight. It’s flight attendants like Sheila who reflect the culture of Southwest Airlines and make flying enjoyable. —Donna Vaughan A WALK FOR KORBIN
Customer service supervisor Cam Lozano recently came to my rescue. I am a quadriplegic and travel with my service dog, Korbin, from Canine Companions for Independence. I was trying to begin my vacation a day early to avoid the incoming Hurricane Irma, but the airport was jammed with people. Needing to board first, I always arrive at the gate far in advance. Between the prolonged wait and crowds of people, I realized that Korbin was in need of a toilet break, but the nearest pet relief area was one concourse over. I was beginning to panic when Cam approached me and offered to take Korbin to the pet relief area in the adjacent concourse. I was so relieved and appreciative. When they didn’t return for some time, I began to get nervous. When I saw them sauntering through the concourse, I let out a sigh of relief. Cam apologized for taking so long. He took Korbin to the pet relief area, where he said he just walked around. He took this as a sign Korbin didn’t “approve” of the accommodations, so he took him to an actual grass area where he went happily! He took a tense situation and turned it into an experience I’ll never forget. I boarded with a smile. —Luke McGregor

Wait, you say. Don’t most of these treats count as desserts? Not if you think about that word. How can it be dessert if you didn’t deserve it? A piece of shoofly pie—a pie crust with sticky molasses filling—is not a dessert if Mrs. Mattern presents it to you with a glass of milk absent a single penitential vegetable. No, this is a snack. Mrs. Mattern taught me that a snack is something more than some food unconsciously stuffed into the mouth while driving or staring at a screen. Whether it’s a packet of goodies laid on my seat tray, a cookie baked by my talented daughter, or one of the many delights you can find in this issue, the best snack is an un-dessert. An extra. Or, if you want, a blessing.

Savor an international palette of restaurants during your stay in Pearland. With over 140 dining choices including the widely acclaimed Killen’s Steakhouse voted #6 on the top 20 list of steakhouses in the country by Daily Meal and Killen’s Barbecue noted for its smoked meat offerings. Also adding a bit of local flavor to the mix is King’s Biergarten serving authentic German/Austrian cuisine and Central Texas Style BBQ for over 40 years.
Snack is one of those words that sound like what they are. I don’t mean onomatopoeias like bam or whoosh or flick, which just imitate sounds. I mean a word that captures an essence. Take moist, the moistest of words. And dry, which sounds completely lacking in humidity. And joy—try to say that without your mood lifting a little. (Mood, on the other hand, sounds kind of moody to the ear.) And snack. A morsel of a word. When I hear it, I think of Mrs. Mattern, who lived next door to us when I was a kid in suburban Philadelphia. Born in the early 1900s to an Amish family, Mrs. Mattern concocted molasses-forward snacks that were the pride of the neighborhood. Any kid showing up at her door would be guaranteed a delight unknown to most ’60s-era children: sweet brown bread with a schmear of crab-apple sauce. A piece of shoofly pie. Half an apple smothered in peanut butter. And, my favorite, rice pudding.

It takes
50
hours to make a friend.
According to a study conducted by University of Kansas professor Jeffrey Hall and published in the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships, you can forget about fast friends. The path to becoming BFFs requires time—and not just any hours will do. “For working adults, more time at work was associated with less closeness in friendship,” Hall says. “Instead, time spent in leisure, at home, or at play really mattered.” In all, you’ll have to dedicate 50 hours to graduate from acquaintance to “casual friend,” 90 hours to jump to “friend,” and 200-plus hours to claim “close friend” status. The good news? That gives you plenty of time to finish making those friendship bracelets.
QUALIT Y TIME The study, which focused on KU students, found that undergrads spend nearly a third of their waking hours with one close friend.

Mad Cap Mimosa
We won’t tell if you count this as a serving of fruit.
If an apple a day keeps the doctor away, what happens if you try an orange, a grapefruit, and a banana? The folks at AMK Kitchen Bar in Chicago aimed to find out. (Well, sort of.) The gastropub in the Windy City’s Bucktown neighborhood rewrote the mimosa playbook, packing in different fruits along the way. Deep Eddy’s grapefruit-infused Ruby Red Vodka provides the base, and a quick pour of banana liqueur rounds out the bracing acidity that typically comes with the brunch staple. (The usual OJ and prosecco complete the prescription.) Try one and call us in the morning.

A lot changed when a 110-year-old neoclassical church was transformed into an eclectic 220-room hotel in Washington, D.C.’s Adams Morgan neighborhood. Wooden pews were doused in colorful hues, organ pipes were hung from the ceiling as an abstract chandelier, and Sunday sermons were replaced by brunch service. But one thing stayed the same: It’s still a community gathering place. Spend time in the lobby and you might encounter a gallery owner waiting to be interviewed at the in-house radio station or glimpse guests mingling over drinks under stained-glass windows. Refine Your Morning Routine
To make the most of your a.m. hours, author Benjamin Spall suggests starting each day the same way. Why is it important to have a morning routine? “It allows you to begin each day with intention and bring small wins with you the rest of the day. In my research, I found that almost none of the world’s best and brightest leave their mornings to chance.” From preparing coffee a certain way to meditating, everyone’s routine is different. Are there any underlying principles? “Your morning routine will and should be adjusted throughout the seasons of your life, and these changes should be deliberate and in accordance to your deepest values and changing priorities.”
50 Southwest july 2018
F2_solution_de.indd 50
In your book you discuss the importance of a “travel-ready” routine. What does that look like? “Think of it as doing the smallest amount you can to get a reasonably large benefit. For example, you may work out every morning at home—you can still do that on the road. You can go for a run, or, if the hotel doesn’t have a gym, work out in your room. Another idea is traveling with a portable kettle or blender so you can make your favorite drink without having to leave the hotel room. Knowing yourself and your habits also allows for ‘smart scheduling.’ If you sleep well on planes, fly overnight so you can arrive rested and ready to go. Try to do as much of your normal routine as possible, but most importantly, get enough sleep. Otherwise, it’s hard to go through the motions of a morning routine the next day.”
After returning home, how can you transition back to your everyday routine? “First, it’s a good idea to write down your routine, so you’ll remember what you’re getting back to. Second, don’t beat yourself up if you fall out of your routine while traveling. Many people see one missed day or item in their routine as complete failure, and then they’ll come home and fall into unhealthy habits for weeks at a time because of that failure. As humans, we like continuality, and we like to see crosses on a calendar after we do something, but you’ve got to recognize that conditions aren’t perfect when you’re traveling.”
Spall co-authored My Morning Routine: How Successful People Start Every Day Inspired, on shelves now.

Here’s how founder Inky Gibbens describes the learning platform: While working in London and doing my Ph.D., I found out that Buryat, the language of my grandparents, was in danger of disappearing. I heard the University of Cambridge was running an incubator for social innovation, so I quit my job and Ph.D. and pitched the idea. That was when Tribalingual was born. We have four- and 10-week courses, with text, audio, and video material, which people can access at their own pace, wherever they are. Once a week, they Skype with a native speaker to learn more about the culture and the environment the speaker
grew up in. Our customers are heritage learners, travelers, linguists, and businesspeople, and our native speakers are united by one mission: to save their culture and language. For us, those go hand in hand. Without culture, language has no life; without language, you can’t understand culture—you can’t understand stories, music, interpersonal behaviors. There’s a danger that, without both, protecting language becomes synonymous with preserving it. At Tribalingual, we’re not interested in mummifying languages so future scholars can look at them in glass bottles. We’re interested in giving them life.

SNACK NATION
Forget Einstein’s theory of relativity. The world’s greatest, most comprehensive equation is this: snacks = happiness. It’s that simple (and legend has it that it was discovered after devouring an entire bag of Cheetos). Inspired by that ultimate food pairing, we set out to tell you about irresistible salty, sweet, crunchy, creamy nibbles across the country that are worth their weight in glee. What’s not simple? Starting with a list of possibilities that numbers, roughly, infinity. So we applied some criteria. We focused on snacks that are freshly made, not mass-produced. (For the record, though, Ho Hos rule.) We left out items that could
be thought of as a full meal. (Appetizers? In. Pizza? Sadly, out.) And we favored food you could eat with your hands. (Sorry, pies.) More than anything, though, we wanted our picks to reflect another undeniable truth: that when we travel, snacks are truly special when they speak to the flavors or traditions of their region, evoking a sense of place. That led us to sublime seafood in the Northeast, greasy goodness in the South, and nachos you could only get in New Mexico. Did we miss some sweet spots? Did we ever. Join the conversation via our #SouthwestSnacks Sweepstakes. (See page 4.) In the meantime, happy munching.

It’s the texture that freaks some people out. But to understand—and ultimately love—the boiled peanut, divorce yourself from the crumbly favorite at baseball games and embrace it as a soft legume, caressed by wood-fired flame and educated with salt and time. Jason Clemmon is the owner of Sunrise Grocery, a general store in the North Georgia mountains that’s been around since the 1920s. He keeps a cauldron of boiled peanuts over a fire out front. The nuts cook in brine an entire day. This can’t be rushed. At Nashville’s Black Rabbit, chef Trey Cioccia serves a swankier version, cooked with a fermented variation of his grandfather’s barbecue sauce, and you can pop the entire thing in your mouth, soft shell and all. Both methods evoke a slower place and time, when I can practically hear the crunch of gravel under tires as my dad and I pull over for a bag, drawn by aromas of fire, earth, and fresh mountain air. —Jennifer Justus

All ice is water, not all water is ice, and neither one is water ice, the weirdly named treat indigenous to greater Philadelphia. Water ice is a cousin to Italian ice, but while both originated with early 20th-century Italian immigrants, water ice’s semi-frozen consistency sets it apart. Too slushy to hold a scoop and too solid to drink with a straw, it’s served in waxed cups with spoons (though locals cut out the middleman by creasing their cup like a milk carton). Many a Philly kid, careless with a black cherry or chocolate, has ruined a pair of fresh Reebok Classics this way. Get it at independent stands like 73-year-old John’s, O.G. and maker of a superior pineapple, and Bucks County’s Yardley Ice House. Every Philadelphian has their favorite stand. Mine is inside L. Ask a Wisconsinite about cheese curds and you’ll get an earful, if not a mouthful. Everyone’s got a story, a tradition, or an almost religious preference. Fresh cheese curds—solid pieces of curdled milk— are small, salty, and chewy, so texturally satisfying that, while your teeth are still working, your hand instinctively reaches for another. In a state that produces more than 3 billion pounds of cheese annually, the choices on how to consume cheese curds never end. Some dip them in marinara at roadside drive-ins. Others get a bag at a farmers market or munch samples at cheese factories. You’ll find them at restaurants, fairs, cookouts. But the fried variation marries two great traditions: agriculture and deep frying. “The real Wisconsin play,” one friend told me, “is to get a burger and, in lieu of fries, get cheese curds.” And really, what could be more American than that? —Jeff Ruby

OF
COMFORT I
f you walked into our little home outside Boston between the hours of 2 and 4 p.m. on virtually any day of the year, you would find a tall, brown-eyed girl seated at the dining room table next to a giant bowl of popcorn. The girl would have her nose buried in a book, and would thus have to reach for the bowl haphazardly, touching at the kernels, selecting the most promising ones by some mysterious process and feeding them into her mouth. This would be my oldest child, 11-yearold Josie, enacting a snacking ritual that has become such an integral part of our lives that it has an official name. It’s called “popcorn o’clock.” As in, “Is it popcorn o’clock yet?” And, “We need to go home right now, Papa! I
don’t want to miss popcorn o’clock.” Josie is not the only person who participates in popcorn o’clock. Other members of the family are allowed to dip into her supply, though none of us would be so foolish as to remove the bowl from her immediate reach. Because, around our house, popcorn o’clock isn’t just a designated grazing period. It’s an event that’s become central to the psychic health of our entire family. If Josie doesn’t get her popcorn fix each afternoon, she transforms from a sweet and sensitive older sister into a dark cloud of discord. And as any parent of multiple siblings will tell you, the difference between a happy eldest child and an unhappy one is the difference between a house full of laughter and one full of tears. july 2018 southwest 65

I CAN IMAGINE there are some of you out there shaking your heads at this point, wondering how a daily dose of buttery carbs could possibly matter so much. This question fits right in with our popular conception of snacks, which is that they’re a silly indulgence meant to quell our cravings, not feed our souls. As a culture, we tend to put snacks in the Trivial Box, the land of empty calories and spoiled brats.
Snacking has helped Josie grow as a big sister to Jude (left) and Rosalie.
I get it. Before I had kids, I would have agreed with you. But my children, and Josie in

particular, have taught me otherwise. Lurking beneath the shiny packaging and sticky jingles is an unexpected truth: Snacks are deep, people. At least for us. You see, our firstborn suffers from what experts call neophobia, which, when it comes to food, is what the rest of us call extreme pickiness. I like to joke that Josie’s diet consists entirely of the “P” food group: pasta, pizza, pancakes, and popcorn. If I’m being perfectly honest with myself—something I’m not fond of being—these foods make up more than half of her diet. She’ll eat fruit and cereal and yogurt, sure. But there are entire food groups that are simply off-limits. Vegetables, for instance. And meat. And nuts. And beans. Her designated health food is hummus, but only the plain kind from Trader Joe’s. You get the picture. My wife and I are both adventurous, if not gluttonous, eaters, and we’ve devoted endless hours to pondering how we raised someone who’s so picky at the table. We often blame ourselves, thinking back to Josie’s difficulty with breastfeeding and how much we worried about her caloric intake during her first few months of life. Were we too lenient in allowing her to pick and choose the foods she would eat, or too strict in forcing her to eat stuff she had to gag down? We’ve read all the books about picky eating, food sensitivity, and allergies. What we’ve come to realize is that our actions as parents matter a lot less than Josie’s basic character. She’s a kid who feels a lot of
6/7/18 2:32 PM
IT’S A RITUAL we instituted just a few months later, when Josie enrolled in kindergarten. She would return home from school in a good mood most days. But by dinnertime, she was almost inevitably in a foul mood, one exacerbated by the shame and frustration of having to come to a table laden with foods she often didn’t like. We realized that Josie needed some downtime after school, a chance to unwind from the new social and mental pressures. And so, one blessed day, my wife made her a big bowl of popcorn, covered with melted vegan butter and sprinkled with salt. Almost instantly, we could feel the internal climate of our daughter shift. She sat down at the dining room table with a book and went into a kind of meditative trance. She would respond to questions or comments. But for the most part, she wanted to be left alone to read her book and eat her popcorn. It was a state I recognized intuitively from my own childhood, when I would settle down with my designated snack: a mug of cold milk, into which I would dunk two

anxiety around food, and always has. To her, what she eats isn’t just sustenance. It’s safety versus fear, control versus chaos. Example: Years ago, we walked with Josie to our local movie theater to watch an animated comedy about prehistoric man, mostly poop jokes with a few scary moments. On the way home, Josie spotted a display of cupcakes in the window of a bakery and began begging us to buy her one. When we refused, our otherwise cheerful 5-year-old had a complete meltdown, right there on the sidewalk. Only later did we realize that Josie had been frightened by the movie, and that she’d been looking to that cupcake for comfort. Which brings us back to popcorn o’clock.

graham crackers, mixing them into a sweet grainy mush that I nursed for an hour or more. What Josie needed was what I’d needed long ago: a dependable pleasure around which she could anchor her emotional life. Popcorn o’clock became a ritual associated with our home. But it proved even more important on the road. Whenever we traveled to see relatives or for a vacation, we made sure to build popcorn o’clock into the schedule. It became our way of reassuring Josie that we see her, that her needs won’t go unmet, even and especially during periods of transition. This has become even more important as she’s had to adapt to the presence of needy younger siblings who are often much more forceful in demanding our attention. Josie has grown into an exemplary big sister, the kind who is fiercely protective of her little brother and sister. But part of the reason she’s able to show this kind of generosity is because she knows we’re looking out for her. The proof, I would argue, is in the popcorn. A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO, I encountered the power of this truth during a vacation in Florida. I had gone to the hotel pool to swim with Josie. A bunch of other kids were already in the pool, including a girl, about Josie’s age, who was quite aggressive in seeking my attention. By this I mean that she began climbing all over me. After a few minutes, I looked around for Josie and saw that she was glaring at me from the edge of the pool. I hurried over to play with her. But she was teary-eyed with rage. When I tried to apologize, Josie walked away. Pretty soon, everyone at the pool was watching this sad drama unfold. Dad pleading for forgiveness and daughter yelling, “Get away from me!” Soon after, it dawned on me why she was so mad. The point of our

excursion to the pool was to get some one-on-one time, a rare commodity with three kids. By playing with this other girl, I’d betrayed her, and done so publicly. She was returning the favor. Before long, Josie had left the pool area altogether. I had no idea what to do. I called my wife, who was back in the room. She had no idea what to do either. And then, suddenly, I checked my watch. It was 2:45 p.m., the heart of popcorn o’clock. I dashed to the front desk of the hotel, explained the situation to the woman there as best as I could, and asked if it might be possible for her to pop up some microwave popcorn. My desperation must have registered, because she popped two bags and poured the popcorn into a fancy pink bowl (actually, it was a giant flower vase), and gave me another half-dozen bags of microwave popcorn, just to make sure. My wife called to deliver some intel: Josie had retreated to our room. I rushed over with the vase held before me like an offering. It was the smell of popcorn that brought my daughter out of hiding, and that allowed me to look her in the eye and apologize for betraying her. I suppose from a certain angle this might register as a case of snack-related bribery. But what was happening in that room felt to me much more like a genuine reconciliation. Josie needed something more than words—a deeper proof of my devotion, a reminder that the love that nourishes us doesn’t just reside in ardent apologies or heart-to-heart talks or even hugs. Sometimes, it takes a double batch of buttered popcorn, shared with your dad, on a hotel bed.

that I have an opportunity to make a difference, and by the time I’m done with the show, we will have raised a ton of money for these kids,” Stefani says. “Vegas is doing something for me, so I wanted to do something for them.” The standout performer and songwriter has sold more than 30 million albums worldwide with her former band No Doubt and as a solo artist. Her third solo album, This Is What the Truth Feels Like, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Top 200 in 2016. With so much material to draw on, Stefani says fans are in for a good time. “I’ve thought about all of the little moments—lights, costumes, dancers—and put the show together in a way that I think is really fun.” Performances are scheduled through July, with additional dates in December 2018, and February and March 2019. When Stefani isn’t on stage at the Zappos Theater, pop and R&B master Lionel Richie will headline “Lionel Richie: All the Hits” in August and October. The multiplatinum-selling artist, fourtime Grammy Award winner, and American Idol judge has performed his mega-hits for fans during the two year-residency. As men age, their hormone levels naturally change. “Not unlike the way women go through menopause, men go through andropause, which means a slow deterioration or diminishing of testosterone levels,” says Ron Pannuzzo, a founding partner and brand director at DreamBrands. “Testosterone affects strength, stamina, energy, focus, lean muscle, and bone density. Cortisol affects the mental and physical stress on the body.” Enter MDrive, DreamBrands’ hormone-free botanical supplement for men that helps regulate healthy testosterone and cortisol levels. What sets Mdrive apart is the fact that it’s a multipurpose solution. “When you buy supplements, typically you’re buying calcium for bone density or vitamin C for a cold,” Pannuzzo says. “Our supplements are compound formulas that affect many systems in a person’s body.” For the best results, Pannuzzo says, it’s important to practice other healthy habits. “MDrive is not a replacement for good eating or exercise,” Pannuzzo says, “but if you do a little bit of both and consider the power of the supplement and botanicals, you can really change your lifestyle, how you feel, and your outlook.”

Mobility is key to strong physical health. The same goes for pain management. According to the California Physical Therapy Association, a physical therapist can help manage or decrease pain, restore movement after injury, or improve coordination and strength. Physical therapists can also improve breathing, cardiovascular functioning, and endurance in athletes. If you’re ready to manage pain or simply incorporate more movement into your life, consider physical therapy.
MIX IT UP
To create a more sustainable workout regimen, seek out exercise that you enjoy. Start with something that puts a spin on traditional group fitness, like an aerobics class that uses JumpSport Fitness Trampolines. According to JumpSport, these trampolines are gentle on the joints and can improve stability and cardiovascular health. Can’t make it to the gym? For in-home use, JumpSport offers a variety of styles, including some that fold in half for easy storage. You can also strive to be more active at work. Ditch the typical office setup in favor of a standing desk and a Wurf Board, an air-springloaded anti-fatigue mat. Standing on the Wurf Board is not only more comfortable than a foam mat, but also encourages micro-movements throughout the day, which, in turn,

TREAT HAIR LOSS
It’s also important to add things to your routine that can improve your emotional health.
HairMax founder David Michaels created his business after experiencing hair loss firsthand. “He went to a laser clinic looking for a solution for his hair loss and had really good results, but he realized there were people who couldn’t afford the same care,” says Francesca Dubsky, director of marketing at HairMax. “He wanted to create a device that people could use at home to treat their hair loss and regrow hair.” As the first company to receive FDA clearance, HairMax has become a leader in hair regeneration technology. Their products have undergone multiple clinical studies, and, more importantly, HairMax has achieved its primary goal of making a product that is effective and affordable (laser devices start as low as $199). “With our LaserBand 82, treatment takes as little as 90 seconds, three times a week, to start seeing results,” Dubsky says. “Clinical studies have also shown that the

average increase in hair count is 129 new hairs per square inch.”
SCHEDULE A CHECKUP
As aging occurs, it’s important to get preventative screenings and tests. For men in particular, an annual checkup could help discover a potentially life-threatening disease. “About one out of seven men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer,” says Dr. Robert Meier, a radiation oncologist at Swedish Radiosurgery Center in Seattle. “We have an excellent way to screen for prostate cancer called the PSA, or prostate-specific antigen, blood test. It can usually detect prostate cancer when it’s still curable.” New recommendations from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force—an independent, volunteer panel of national experts—state that men should first understand the benefits and risks of PSA screening before undergoing the test.

FINANCING A FRANCHISE 101
KNOW THE COSTS
Before investing in a franchise, find out how much it will cost to break into your particular industry. Barbara Schuh, vice president of franchise operations for Home Care Assistance, a company that provides long-term, in-home care for the elderly, says the initial investment includes not only the franchise fee and start-up marketing, but also operating costs for the first nine to 12 months, as well as storefront transformation, licensing, and other
expenses that are required before opening the doors. “When it comes to starting a business, you don’t want to go in undercapitalized,” Schuh says. “Whatever that initial investment range is, I recommend aiming for the top amount.” Schuh says it’s also important to be realistic about your personal finances. “You need to plan upfront for covering your personal expenses while your franchise grows because when you start a franchise, you’re not buying a job, you’re buying a business,”
she says. That means the endeavor needs to become profitable before the owner begins to take a salary. “Expect to reinvest heavily, and don’t count on taking a salary for yourself the entire first year.” Another key thing to consider? Location. “Location is particularly important for Home Care Assistance,” Schuh says. “Finding a good retail space near where people shop, live, and go to school really sets our franchisees up for success.”

WEIGH YOUR OPTIONS
Alex Samios is vice president of franchise development for Dogtopia, the fastest growing franchise in the $70 billion pet industry. He agrees that business owners should combine their decisions about financing with a strategic vision for growth. “Consider the long play,” he says. “You’ll take out a loan and lose money in the beginning as you scale your business. Then once profitable you will have an asset that will continue to produce profits…and, hopefully, one you can sell at a nice valuation when you exit.” Dogtopia franchisees typically use Small Business Administration financing (more on this in a minute) and borrow 3070 percent over a 10-year term, but many will pay off the loan sooner. The majority of Dogtopia franchisees use SBA loans—loans that are issued by a lender but partially guaranteed by the U.S. government. With government backing, the idea is that there will be a decreased risk for the lender and terms will remain reasonable for borrowers. Samios says SBA loans generally provide about 70 percent of financing for a Dogtopia franchisee’s total required investment.
“We expect our franchisees to bring equity in, too, and they’re typically responsible for the other 30 percent,” Samios says Franchisees have various ways of making up the other 30 percent of funding. In addition to home equity or stocks, Samios says you could consider leveraging resources from 401(k) accounts or other retirement funds. Some franchisees use rollovers as business startups, or ROBS, which allow them to use their existing retirement funds to fund a new business by purchasing stock in it. If you do decide to move forward with a loan, many franchises have established relationships with preferred lenders, thus making the process easier for franchisees.
“Our preferred lenders know our business. They love us and love our concept,” Samios says. “Through our relationships with our lending partners, there’s $100 million earmarked for SBA loans to Dogtopia franchisees.” One common frustration of SBA financing is the complicated process. Dogtopia’s relationships help with that, too. The lending partner can guide a franchisee through the steps, from prequalification and underwriting through shopping for the best rates and terms. Remember, because these are complicated transactions, the key for all kinds of funding is to carefully investigate your options and seek expert financial guidance.

BET ON YOURSELF
“Although 90 percent of our clients use some form of financing, they all end up having teeth in the game financially,” Jack Johnson says. And he should know. He and his wife, Jill, co-founded The Franchise Insiders, which specializes in connecting future franchise owners with opportunities best suited to them. When it comes to investing their personal savings or retirement accounts in a new business venture, Johnson asks his clients an important question:
“What do you feel better betting on—the stock market or yourself?” An important first step is to determine the liquid assets you have and can readily invest. “Some potential franchisees know that number down to the dollar, and some don’t even know their credit score,” Johnson says. The Franchise Insiders can help potential franchisees on their way to business ownership. “Because of our experience and volume, we can quickly interview potential franchisees and recommend the best directions for them to explore,” he says. That includes not just financing methods, but also the most suitable franchises and insur-
ance for each client. Johnson is also a proponent of SBA loans and has seen the process change since founding The Franchise Insiders 10 years ago. “It has really improved,” Johnson says. While SBA loans were once notoriously slow, SBA Express loans can now provide funds relatively quickly. In fact, the SBA promises to respond to applications within 36 hours. “On average,” Johnson says, “SBA Express funds are available to borrowers within four weeks.”

Nicky Lecher and Peter Lane
LOOK FOR GROWTH OPPORTUNITIES
For Peter Lane, quick growth of his franchise business was a goal from the beginning. Lane and business partner Nicky Lecher opened their first location of LunchboxWax, a body waxing services franchise, in July 2015. They now operate six locations in California’s Bay Area, including the three locations they opened last year. “We knew we wanted to get to five
or six ASAP, because that’s when you really start reaping the rewards,” Lane says. It’s at that point that Lane says he could put in an organizational structure that would allow him to hire an area director. “We’re pretty decentralized,” he says, “but she visits our locations on a daily basis and works directly with the waxologists and managers.” Just as important, that’s also the point where he expected to change his method of financing. He and Lecher leveraged savings and home equity to open their first locations.
“Now that we’ve got six, we’ll reinvest our profits from those into new LunchboxWax salons,” Lane says. He predicts steady earnings from their established stores will allow them to expand to three more new locations within a year. For Lane, location is a primary consideration, and he lets the availability of the right space drive expansion. “I’ll keep my eye on the right piece of real estate, and then strike when it comes available,” he says. Although the right conditions vary by industry, he warns against growth for growth’s sake. Instead, be patient for the right circumstances, and then act. Although they have avoided external financing so far, Lane doesn’t rule it out in the future. That approach could be a good option for them if more than one attractive location opens up simultaneously. For Lane and Lecher, aggressive growth relies on a solid game plan.

LunchboxWax:
A MODERN-DAY CULTURE CLUB FOUNDER & CEO DEBI LANE TALKS ABOUT THE VIBE BEHIND THE BODY-WAXING BRAND, THE EXPLOSIVE GROWTH AND THE KINDS OF PEOPLE CHOSEN TO JOIN THE CULTUREDRIVEN FRANCHISE.
When LunchboxWax CEO Debi Lane selects new franchisees for the chic-and-cheeky body-waxing concept she launched in 2010 and franchised in 2013, there’s a question she asks herself each time: Could I spend a fulfilling and enjoyable week on a sailboat with this person?
The thought behind the sailboat theory, she said, is that people can come together to achieve a goal (or reach a destination), but if the focus isn’t on collaboration and purpose, it’s not success at all. You have to wonder, does this progressive, goodhearted approach work? During the first year of franchising, six salons opened nationwide to welcome women and men who are mindful about people and places they choose for personal services. Since then, the company has near-doubled in size each year and earned a ranking in Entrepreneur Magazine’s 2017 top 100 new franchises. Ed Sheridan, who operates LunchboxWax salons in the Northeast with his son Patrick, says the attention to detail and commitment to culture is central to the growth.
As 2018 gets underway, Lane continues to grow this modernday culture club by awarding franchises to a diverse mix of curious, driven professionals — people who want the independence afforded by business ownership and the support of a dedicated team in an industry poised for growth (no pun intended). She says, “Behind our expertly trained waxologists, thoughtfully designed salons and specially formulated products is a knowledgeable, energetic team that guides each LunchboxWax franchisee every step of the way.” Learn more about becoming a LunchboxWax franchisee at lunchboxfranchise.com.
“Walk into any LunchboxWax, and the competence, and kindness is palpable,” said Sheridan. “The energy resonates and tells this great story. It’s natural to want to be a part of it.”
Of course it’s not the only requirement, she admits, but it speaks volumes to the company’s culture and the people who create it. “We’re redefining what success means in business by placing priority on fostering each person’s EQ, or emotional intelligence, as well as their ability to run and grow a business,” Lane said. “We are a culture of heart-driven, headstrong people who are as equally interested in taking care of themselves as we are contributing to a greater whole.” This is not an offer to sell or solicitation of an offer to buy. Offers are only made in states where we have complied with applicable law and an offer to sell or a solicitation of any offer to buy a franchise shall be made solely by a Franchise Disclosure Document. All financial information is as shown in Section 19 of the FDD to be disclosed to potential franchisees during the awarding process.

RECOGNIZE EACH BUSINESS IS DIFFERENT
As a mom of two young children, business owner Katie Moore sought an opportunity that aligned with her passion for helping children learn. She chose Kiddie Academy, a franchise focused on child development and early education. But before taking the plunge, she and her husband did the math to make sure their investment would pay off. “Kiddie Academy provided us a pro forma spreadsheet to help us estimate the return on our investment,” Moore says. The tool was helpful, and she recommends something like it for others who are getting into a franchise. “It helped us project a breakeven point based on the costs and revenues we expected for our market.” For Moore, the calculations for each of her two locations were quite different. She’s been leasing her first location in Bolingbrook, Illinois, for more than six years. In 2017, she built a second location in nearby Darien, Illinois. Financing-wise, the two looked different, too. For the first, she used an SBA loan. Purchasing the second location involved refinancing her
first and rolling over her husband’s IRA as the cash injection. In both cases, her pro forma projections showed she would break even within 11 months—and she beat both of them.
WORK DIRECTLY WITH THE FRANCHISE
The franchise you buy can determine the ease of external financing, if you need it. From a lender’s perspective, well-established franchises can seem less risky than those without a proven track record, and that can mean a smoother path toward funding. As one of the world’s largest manufacturers of pavement sealer and sealcoat, SealMaster is a good example. Because the company has more than 100 pavement sealer manufacturing plants and distribution centers in the U.S., a SealMaster franchise is widely considered a solid investment. “With large, protected territories —some are entire states—our franchisees have the opportunity to capitalize on all the market share the industry has to bear in their territory,” says SealMaster’s communications director Debbie Petok Hufford.
6/4/18 12:55 PM

“The earning potential is staggering.” In addition, franchisees that aim to use the financing mostly for capital assets may experience a smoother process. The upfront cost of a SealMaster manufacturing franchise, for instance, includes substantial amounts of equipment for day-today use in manufacturing. Lenders may look more favorably on the purchase of capital assets that can be resold, compared to expenditures that can’t be recovered. Some franchises, including SealMaster, may fund all or part of the business startup costs. This option can prove easier than dealing with a bank, and working with

the franchise for both the loan and other aspects of the business can streamline matters in the early days of ownership. Franchisor financing is typically structured like a conventional loan, with a balloon payment after a specified period of time.

One Question
Gwen Stefani,
Songwriters. I started writing with my older brother, Eric. Then I got to collaborate with other writers like Pharrell Williams, who is a huge inspiration because he doesn’t have insecurities when he writes. He just lets it come out of him. Songwriting can make you quite insecure because it’s not like you can press a button and it happens. I’ve had writer’s block through the years, but I don’t feel like I’m at that place right now, and that comes from working with the right people. When you’re around talent, it brings your talent out. See Gwen during her residency at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino in Las Vegas.
