From figures to forms Manuelita Brown reshapes her story while preserving those of others Manuelita Brown works with her hands—fueled by her mind. “Give your brain a chance, and it will do the job. You just have to have confidence and prepare it,” she says. After decades as a math teacher, and earning her master’s in psychology from the University of California San Diego, Manuelita changed course and began creating art. The order of numbers and the complex workings of the mind gave way to new inspiration—sculpting people’s lives in bronze. A frequent subject is the AfricanAmerican experience. Her artwork celebrates the human spirit: a mother tenderly embracing her infant, a relentless Sojourner Truth fighting for equality, a cleaning woman taking a rare pause to rest. “The story of people is usually told by what’s left behind,” she says. “I want to leave a record about those people who came before me or those who are here with me.” UC San Diego alumni are risk-takers and innovators—explorers of our universe, our world and our humanity. With so many dating options out there, why did you choose It's Just Lunch?
D: I travel a lot for work, so I’d read about It’s Just Lunch in airline magazines, and then I ran into a friend who was attending the wedding of an attorney in town who’d met her husband through IJL – the fact that those two events happened so close together, I thought I should call them. At the end of my work day I didn’t want to come home and go look at profiles online. I felt like it was a waste of my time. M: I had gotten a divorce and then did online dating for a while before joining IJL. I joined mainly because it’s a lot of work to do the online thing. You have to keep up on it. You never really know who you’re going to meet. IJL was just a lot easier. They found people for me based on what I was looking for and I just had to show up. You don’t have to do much work. What would you tell a friend who was apprehensive about investing the money on IJL?
M: I’d ask, “Are you looking for a relationship or not?” With online dating you never know who’s on the other side of the line. IJL had better quality people who were interesting to me. It truly was an experience that was tailored for me. Describe your first meeting with an IJL matchmaker?
D: She asked me questions about
myself, what I like to do, what I want in a relationship, whether I’d marry someone who already had kids, how important religion is, that kind of thing. It
would take much longer to find out someone else’s answers to those questions through online dating. This was black and white.
Tell us about your first date with one another.
D: I never went on lunch dates because I was always busy at work so I met Michael after work at a downtown restaurant. The conversation just flowed. I was attracted to him from the start. I remember it turned into dinner.

Green Chile Lamb Burger INGREDIENTS
DIRECTIONS
24 oz. ground lamb patty
1.
Preheat grill to high.
4 slices of cheddar jack cheese
2.
4 oz. 505 Southwestern brand Flame Roasted Green Chile
Form ground lamb into four 6 oz. patties. Salt and pepper each patty to desired amount.
3.
Place patties on the grill: three minutes per side for medium rare, five minutes per side for medium, or six minutes per side for medium well.
4.
After flipping the patty, place cheese and green chile on top of cooked patty and cover with a dome lid. Cheese will melt and adhere chile to top of patty.
5.
Cut bun in half. Lightly butter the inside of both halves, then place on the grill surface.
6.
Once bread is golden brown and toasty, spread aioli or mayonnaise on both surfaces. Place lettuce on bottom bun half, then top with the burger and bun.

A Tradition of Excellence on Southwest as a high school senior in the 1970s. I was traveling from my hometown of San Antonio to Houston on a college recruiting trip. I was one of just three Customers onboard! And while the service was phenomenal (after all, there were three Flight Attendants), I must admit that I thought to myself, “There is no way this airline is ever going to make it.” I’m sure glad I was wrong! Of course, Southwest has not only survived but it has also evolved into arguably the most successful commercial airline in history. Last year, we celebrated
our 43rd consecutive year of profitability—a record unmatched in our industry. We’ve also remained job secure for our People, grown to carry more Passengers in the United States than any other airline, and been named to Fortune’s list of the World’s Most Admired Companies for 22 years running. In 2016, we ranked seventh! Admittedly, a lot has changed in 45 years—certainly in my 30 years with this Company, and even in the last five to 10 years. We’ve evolved to meet the needs of our Customers and build a sustainable airline for the next four decades and beyond. But what strikes me the most is what hasn’t changed. In 1971, there was nothing like Southwest. Flying was for the rich and elite. But Southwest changed all that with a clear Purpose and strong conviction that an airline could offer low fares and great service. It worked. Today, we remain true to our roots. We call it Transfarency: an honest, open approach to low fares without hidden fees. After 45 years, Southwest is still a category of one. We aim to keep it that way. Thanks for coming along for the ride all these years!

This month, Southwest Airlines celebrates 45 years of a low-fare revolution that began on June 18, 1971. It’s hard for me to imagine what it was like for our original Employees back in the early days, but my 30 years at this Company make it easy for me to understand their Purpose. It was simply to connect People to important moments in their lives through friendly, reliable, and low-cost air travel. Remarkably, our Purpose is the same today as it was on day one. Looking back, I’m reminded of my very first flight, which happened to be

Si bien el servicio era fenomenal (después de todo, había tres Sobrecargos), debo admitir que pensé para mis adentros: “No hay modo de que esta aerolínea lo vaya a lograr”. Naturalmente, ¡estoy feliz de haber estado equivocado! Por supuesto, Southwest Airlines no solo ha sobrevivido, sino que incluso podría decirse que se ha convertido en la aerolínea comercial con más éxito. El año pasado celebramos 43 años

I am writing to say how impressed I was with First Officer Michael Meline on a recent flight from Dallas to Albuquerque, New Mexico. I was extremely tired after being in an airport all day. I did not feel well and was ready to be done. While boarding the flight, Michael mentioned to the flight attendants that he was going to get dinner, and then asked if the crew wanted anything. I was joking with them and said I’d like a sweet tea. Not five minutes went by, and he returned with food

While boarding a recent flight, I mentioned to flight attendant Terry Lee Allert that my bucket list included being a flight attendant someday. He smiled and said, “It’s not too late.” After the plane took off and the attendants got the orders from their customers, Terry Lee came to my seat and told me to come with him. He took me to the front where he had a tray prepared to serve and said, “Now is your chance to fulfill your dream.” It was awesome! I served that tray, and then came back and prepared a second one with aid from Terry Lee. I handed out the snacks and had a great time interacting with the customers. Terry Lee, Rhodora Fernandez, and Katherine Cleland all made the event great. When approaching Fort Lauderdale, I read one of the announcements, and before I got off the plane, Capt. Danny Crisp and First Officer Jennifer Stewart allowed me to sit in the cockpit, ask any questions I had, and

I have flown with Southwest for years and have always loved their level of service and professionalism, but today I had the best Southwest experience of my life—one that I will never forget. I was traveling on a ridiculously early flight with my two kids, who are 1 and 3 years old. I had managed to make it all the way to the gate without a hitch but quickly realized I was in over my head. Loading two small children plus car seats on
a plane was just something I hadn’t thought through to completion. I was embarrassed, to say the least, but only for a split second. Two amazing flight attendants, Jacoby Lassey and Alphonso Thomas, jumped right in to help. Not only did they carry the seats and my son to our row, they stayed and helped until we were completely set. When we landed, they did it all again. They held my kids as I buckled and unbuckled their seats, and spoke so kindly to them. They reassured me every time I thanked them for their help. As I exited the plane, they set up my stroller and buckled in my son. One of them covered my daughter with her blanket, and I couldn’t hold back my tears. I was in Minneapolis on business for the day and had a connecting flight back to Detroit that was cancelled due to mechanical issues. We were put on a later flight to Chicago, but my connecting flight to Detroit was long gone by the time we arrived. I was issued a travel voucher, put up in a hotel for the night, and rebooked for an early flight to Detroit. Once onboard from Minnesota, I was seated next to Katie Higgins, one of your off-duty flight attendants. I told her I was from Dallas and had been flying Southwest since the ’70s, and that this was the first time I had been delayed by a problem like this. I was not upset in any way, but I did mention that, as luck would have it, I hadn’t counted on staying overnight and had nothing with me besides my laptop. We spent the flight in casual conversation. Upon arrival in Chicago, we said goodbye, and I saw her hurry off the plane and disappear. When I got to my hotel, the lobby was full of people checking in, so I went across the street to a restaurant to kill some time and get a bite to eat. I went back to the hotel to check in, and when I was given my key, the

desk clerk said she had a bag for me. I was surprised and asked why. She only knew that a young lady had dropped it off with my name on it. Inside was about $50 worth of toiletries, a Chicago T-shirt, and a package of underwear with a note saying, “I hope this helps the inconvenience,” signed Katie. I still can’t believe she went out of her way and at her own expense to do that for me! I have read about other random acts of kindness by your employees, but I certainly wasn’t expecting this. I would really like to give her back the money she spent and say, “Thank you!” I was already a loyal customer, and I prefer Southwest Airlines above all others. This only reinforces that. My son, Will, a freshman at Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington, was getting ready to board a flight to Phoenix when he collapsed. I want to thank Southwest, and especially customer service supervisor Laralynn Stevens, for exceptional compassion and treatment. I had been texting Will minutes before and was shocked when we received a call from Laralynn telling us he was being treated by paramedics and was on his way to a local hospital. She reassured us he was going to be OK and that she would get him a voucher so he could stay at a nearby hotel once released from the hospital. She also made flight arrangements to get him home the following day. Laralynn told Will which hospital to request to be taken to, gave him her cell phone number, and even walked food vouchers over to his hotel after her shift so that Will would be able to eat dinner and breakfast. When she called me, she told me she had a son who was a senior in high school, and they had just talked about the possibility of getting ill while in college out of state. She felt our pain and told me she would be his Spokane mom through this mini crisis. Laralynn could not have been kinder to Will. How blessed we are that he is fine (the collapse was due to dehydration) and that this happened in a town where
people really care and go the extra mile. I hope I get to meet Laralynn someday and give her a hug of gratitude. We’ve always loved flying Southwest Airlines, but we now appreciate you even more. —Jane Seamans CREW IN CONTROL
I was recently on a flight bound for Tampa, Florida, from Atlanta when we had to divert to Tallahassee because of an electrical smell in the cabin. Let me thank Capt. Andy Rypien and First Officer Richard Steiner for quick thinking and solid reactions to a situation that could have gotten much worse. Richard should be a spokesman because he handled the entire passenger group with the ease and friendliness of an old pal. In all my years of flying, I have never experienced someone with the ability to control a situation so well. When the oxygen masks deployed, flight attendants Robin Maynard, Valerie Fokidis, and Carmen Anderson remained calm and collected and helped those passengers who were struggling. As a security professional, I know what it takes to deal with high-stress situations, and I can say that this crew—all five of them— are welcome on any of my squads. They deserve to be commended at the highest levels. —Rudy Wolter HEART FOR HEROES
I am a soldier in the U.S. Army and was flying back to my training post after the holidays. The level of courtesy, true appreciation, and gratitude from flight attendants Addy Aviles, Glenn Foley, and John Irace was admirable. Every soldier in uniform received a personal thank-you goody bag from the crew. We also got special attention upon arriving at our destination—we were able to get off the plane first, and the entire plane clapped and cheered. These small gestures were not required by any means, but the kindness of these crew members made me and every other soldier feel appreciated and supported. For this, I would like to thank Southwest Airlines and these employees. I hope they get the recognition they deserve for going above and beyond for their passengers! —John Furcht

All the service stories were very good, but as the son of a World War II pilot and one who grew up with the “Greatest Generation” dominating my childhood—mostly in a positive way, but not always—I was touched and moved by “Men of Earth and Sky” [April 2016]. It was elegantly written and authentic. I expected it to be unrelentingly proud. It was appropriately proud, but more importantly, it was honest. Good work, Mr. H.

I read “Men of Earth and Sky” on a flight to Baltimore. Jay Heinrichs captured my heart with this story. I felt like he was describing my own father’s experience with World War II and his resulting stoicism. “He lived through hell—crawled through it—and maybe he never entirely left it.” Beautifully written.
Thanks to Jay Heinrichs for sharing his family story about heroes of World War II aviation. I too had a family member, my late father, who was in the Army Air Corps as a bomber gunner stationed in China. The sacrifices of many remarkable but largely unknown people are so common, both back then and in the present day. I would also like to come to the rescue of the P-47 Thunderbolt (the Jug, short for Juggernaut) that Mr. Heinrichs’

I recently flew home to Albuquerque, New Mexico, and I read the article “Thirst Aid” about the woman who delivers water to Navajo Nation residents in the Thoreau, New Mexico, area. It was a pleasant surprise to read about a place I once lived. While I was in elementary school in Thoreau, most of my classmates lived without running water and electricity. Thank you for bringing the hardship of these conditions to the attention of the general public.

To me, one of the best parts of flying Southwest is reading the in-flight magazine. Recently, I reached in the seatback pocket for it as I waited for my plane to finish boarding. Almost immediately, “A World of His Own” by Zsofia McMullin [December 2015] caught my attention. Zsofia writes with such clarity that I felt somehow transported to Budapest (a place I have never been), and to the Gettysburg battlefield (a place I have visited more than once). The article was a reminder that it is important to honor our past and discover our roots. Perhaps that will bring a little more understanding to the world.

Dear Reader,
Celebrating a Southwest Airlines anniversary can seem a little off-brand. Sure, the airline has a great history, starting with a famous cocktail napkin on which co-founder Herb Kelleher sketched the original route map. But Southwest has never been a backward-looking enterprise. Its revolutionary ticketing and refusal to charge baggage fees drove the airline forward. Expect more things like this in the years to come. So, for this anniversary issue, we chose to look to the future; see page 70. It’s a chancy proposition, admittedly. But I guarantee that a scene much like the following will take place in the next generation: A man walks up to a Southwest gate. He’s booked on a later flight, and his chances of making this one are slim; there’s a long waiting list. “I haven’t seen my wife in almost two weeks,” he tells the gate agent. “Do you like coffee?” she asks. “Sure,” he says, startled. She points to a coffee bar across the terminal. “Buy yourself a cup and wait for my signal.” He does that, and halfway into his coffee, he sees her nod. He trots over, and she hands him a boarding pass. “Kiss your wife when you get home.” It’s not a dramatic scene—you can read better stories on page 22—but he finds he has tears in his eyes. That particular episode actually happened: I was the homesick man with the coffee. (The agent didn’t know I had anything to do with the airline.) I have no doubt that something like this will happen again, to someone else, years from now. Because, while Southwest’s technology, products, and services change, the character of its people does not. I have worked with many of them for over a quarter of its history, and they have remained among the kindest people I have ever met.

The fantastic figure, which can be written as 274,207,281 - 1, was discovered by University of Central Missouri professor Curtis Cooper as part of the Great Internet Mersenne Prime Search. No stranger to putting two and two together, Cooper found his fourth record-setting prime since 1997 with the help of GIMPS software. “There’s a lot of luck involved,” he says. “You download the software for free and just run it on your machine. The central server has a queue of numbers to test.” If Cooper breaks the record for a fifth time, we’re gonna need a bigger calculator— and maybe an oxygen tank.

Forget about Take Your Child to Work Day. According to a survey of 1,006 employees, we’re more likely to stick with employers who welcome Fido and Fluff y with open arms. Another argument for instituting a pet policy? Furry friends can help curtail an office’s dog-eat-dog vibe. “Having pets at work creates enormous community,” says Tami Majer, the senior vice president of personnel and organization at Banfield Pet Hospital, which conducted the survey. “You’ll see associates converge around pets, meeting each other and having conversations they wouldn’t otherwise have.” The survey also found that, along with improving manners, having pets at work can reduce stress. All that’s left now is convincing your boss the plan isn’t too far-fetched.

A little empathy goes a long way, says the Warby Parker co-founder. When my three co-founders and I started the business, we were full-time students working out of an apartment. The week we launched we were able to get these great editorial features in GQ and Vogue, but we dramatically underestimated their impact. I had my phone set up to buzz anytime we got an order. I was sitting in class when the first one came in. Ten minutes later, I got another buzz, and then another buzz. I pretty quickly realized that we had taken more orders than we had inventory for. Within four weeks, we were sold out of our top 15 styles and had a waiting list of 20,000 customers for home try-ons. As founders, we reached out to every person on that list. People aren’t used to getting that type of reaction from the companies they engage with. Because they were blown away by how much we cared, many of them became our biggest brand champions.

The first step to reconciliation is surfacing each person’s grievances. After acknowledging your colleague’s feelings, try to empathize with him or her. Only then can you work to rebuild positive relations.”

What’s at the core of all conflict? “The first thing to recognize is that conflict is absolutely natural,” says Shapiro, the founder and director of the Harvard International Negotiation Program and the author of Negotiating the Nonnegotiable. “Almost all emotionally charged conflicts are driven by threats to our identity. Oftentimes in the workplace, there’s a push and pull between affiliation (how connected you feel to an organization) and autonomy (how much freedom you have in an organization). All of this plays into a phenomenon I call the Tribes Effect, a mindset of us versus them.”
What then? “To better understand what’s keeping you stuck in conflict, try to describe your feelings using a metaphor. A metaphor allows you to talk about very sensitive issues without as much vulnerability. Imagine there’s a piece of clay on the table between you and your colleague; the two of you are sculpting it together, and you can talk about it. The result is a powerful shift in perception.” Any other resolution strategies? “People often assume that a conflict must be adversarial—me versus you—but the research suggests otherwise. Aim to turn the other person from an adversary into a partner: ‘You’re not the problem, and I’m not the problem; the problem exists between us, so how can we deal with it?’ Framing your conflict as a shared challenge from the outset can have a huge impact on the outcome.”

Here’s how co-founder Todd Lawton describes the readerfriendly app: After six years of running Out of Print, a literary merchandise company, with my co-founder Jeff LeBlanc, we wanted to provide another outlet for people to express their excitement about books. We took the idea of “shelf-talkers” in bookstores, which are signs featuring staff picks that have a lot of personality, and turned that into an app. With Litsy, you follow other people—whether authors, literary
groups, or fellow readers—and use the “stack” button to categorize books as “to read,” “currently reading,” or “have read.” Users can create three types of posts: a general post called a blurb, one for sharing quotes, and a review post. Each is limited to 300 characters and allows you to add a photo. After you post about a book, it’s saved and attached to that title, creating a collective marginalia. My larger-than-life mentor served up lessons the best way he knew: one egg at a time. / BY BRUCE PARSONS
H
ad pat been a foot shorter and 100 pounds heavier he would have looked like a Coca-Cola Santa Claus. But Pat was a tall man, closer to seven feet than five, with a thick but neatly trimmed white beard. Pat knew that his height could be intimidating to those who were smaller—adults and children alike. When addressing either, he would sit or bend his knees, lowering himself to near eye level so that talk between equals could occur. His given name was Knighton, brother of Uriel Jr., son of Uriel, but he went by Pat: easier to spell, easier to pronounce. He was a southerner by birth and heart, a big boy from a small town in the foothills of the ILLUSTRATION BY SAM KALDA/FOLIO ART

Smoky Mountains, but he was a learned man as well. Pat learned by reading, and he read voraciously. There were books about culture, language, economics, history, science. Western novels where good always prevailed. And there were technical manuals about communications equipment and computer operating systems. Pat devoured them with a fervor reserved for parents trying to finish Goodnight Moon for a sleep-fighting toddler. If Pat were asked why he picked up a book from a coffee table and started reading, he would simply reply, “Because it was there.” He was as comfortable in the jungle of a tropical plant nursery as he was in the wired jungle of a telecommunications hub. working life he helped transition a newspaper to online content, a 70-something man advising youngsters how to be digital. I hesitate to call him a Renaissance Man. The word has eleven letters—in the parlance of North Carolina, that’s far too many for three syllables. A one-syllable word like “smart” would suffice. Besides, Pat said, the Renaissance was a time of great art, but no flushing toilets and no toilet

paper. How could Western civilization possibly call this a rebirth? BIG BOYS, ESPECIALLY big boys from the south, eat breakfast. Pat’s favorite place was Waffle House. Eggs, grits, bacon, fried potatoes—staples of a boy and man from rural North Carolina. According to Pat, the best time to visit the local Waffle House was 5 a.m., long after the bar patrons left but a few hours before the
day dwellers arrived. By 5 a.m. the cook and wait staff were fully recovered from any 2 a.m. reverie. A sober customer could enjoy breakfast favorites, thank the cook, and engage a waitress in conversation about politics, family, or the price of eggs. The Waffle House experience was a rite of passage, especially for Yankee transplants, and Pat shared it with our young children. From their time spent at the local Waffle House our now adult children learned about the Southern palate, and life: the value of hard work, patience, resilience. But enlightenment is rarely attained in one encounter. Instead, it is acquired, if at all, over time, with each opportunity for receiving advice built upon the foundation of previous counsel. Pat and his wife, Millie, shared their wisdom and welcomed us to their extended family. We repaid their kindness in small ways. When new storm doors were needed for their home, I offered to install them. Assembly was a struggle. The door just wouldn’t fit the opening. Undeterred, I found a hacksaw and shortened the storm door, enlarged the latch opening, and drilled new mounting holes through the frame. After cursing the manufacturer and its lackluster standards, I was finally able to attach the door. Success was short-lived. In a chin-rubbing moment, I realized the door didn’t fit because I had inverted it. I had installed the door upside down and backwards; the storm glass panel retaining strips were on the outside versus the inside. In silent embarrassment I apologized to the company and the workers who produced such a fine door. All that was left was fessing up to Pat. To my surprise, he was ecstatic. He raved about the novelty of the door. He was sure no one in the neighborhood had one like it, and

thought that placing the retaining strips on the outside of the storm glass instead of the inside was pure genius: Any burglar could just remove the retaining strips, pull out the storm glass, and enter the home without undue property damage. Such was Pat’s grace. The $250 storm door didn’t matter. The failed installation didn’t matter. What mattered were dignity and the bond of friendship. My error
could have been a big thing, but Pat made it little. The message was simple: Be big in little things. It’s a life lesson I have never forgotten. OUR FAMILY’S relationship with Pat and Millie was a gift, unexpected and treasured. This Southern couple opened their home and their hearts to us. We were migrants from Michigan, a state where folks unnecessarily

pronounced all letters of a word. (Years later, I concluded that the truncated patois spoken in North Carolina’s Piedmont region was the consequence of oppressive summer heat and humidity. Speech is oral exertion, requiring the coordinated effort of multiple muscles. If the sentiment of a three-syllable word could be conveyed in two, why add to the burden?) We had met Pat and Millie through church, an institution that espouses inclusion but is often leery of new people. Pat and Millie reached out and we latched on. Our family joined Pat and Millie on weekend adventures to cultural landmarks like Dollywood. We became regular visitors to their house for Sunday dinners. There were fish camps with deep fat-fried catfish, fried hush puppies, and any other food that could be served batter-brown and oil-laden. They were surrogate grandparents for our children, and parents to us. Millie (“Miss Millie,” as Pat called her) was Pat’s rock. They had found one another mid-life. Each brought a treasure trove of experience, respective children, realized and unrealized dreams, pain, joy, success, failure, and aspirations for life to come. For Millie, the Christian message of hope and redemption wasn’t just doctrinal discourse— it was real. Every person was your neighbor, worthy of acceptance, love, and restoration. Neighbors included wayward adult grandchildren and friends recovering from failure, searching for purpose and redemption. There was a room for such souls on the third floor of their tri-level house. No reservations were necessary. Those who sought refuge could stay for a week, or maybe a month, as long as they committed to self-improvement and making their bed daily. It was a place for quiet reflection

and counsel, a monastic retreat with Pat’s sage advice and eggs to order. From those extended stays marriages were saved, careers rebooted, and, on occasion, unwanted change accepted. The value was immeasurable. PAT WAS OLDER than Millie and had his own health problems. He always expected Millie would survive him. Women usually outlive their men, no matter what part of the country they come from. But not this time. In a few short years, Millie was gone. She spent many of her last days at home, surrounded by comfortable people and familiar spaces. Within 10 feet of her sickbed was the house’s second entry—a glasspaneled storm door that had been installed by me, this time correctly. It was a door to second chances and a promise grounded in Millie’s faith, shared with the hopeful and hopeless alike. A few weeks after Millie’s death, Pat foundered as he climbed the stairs. He was short of breath, and, unbeknownst to him, invaded by cancer. He lived alone for a while, frying eggs for one. Later, he moved in with his daughter, an hour’s drive away. Pat grieved for the loss of Miss Millie. But survivors live on. Pat kick-started his life. His remaining months were like the bellowing of an idling Harley Sportster, a bike that could fly but was just as impressive rumbling at a stoplight. There were books to read and friends to make. Pat enjoyed senior meals, where the women outnumbered the men, more widows than widowers. Even a guy with limited time commanded a second look. For his mostly female table companions, Pat was a man who could tell a tale. Old stories for new audiences. And he was comfortable with himself: no walls, no pretense. To his new friends, he was entertaining,

Other speakers would capture the boldness of Pat’s life. I intended to talk about the little things that made him big in my eyes. Thoughts drifted back a decade or so earlier. Our daughter was about 7 at the time. It was an especially bad day. Her scrawled appeal on white paper was simple and heartfelt. “Dear Pat, This is the worst day of my life and I wish at you would take care of it.” Pat knelt down and hugged her in that moment of despair, eye to eye, cheek to cheek, and heart touching heart. But he also framed the message—mistakes and all—and hung it in a prominent place in their home. It wasn’t displayed to embarrass the petitioner. In 45 years, one thing hasn’t changed: seemingly small acts of kindness that create lasting ripple effects. For two of THE ORIGINALS, it’s just another day on the job. \BY AUSTIN W. G. MORTON
few places exude the kind of kinetic energy that’s so palpable at an airport. Young and old, harried and placid, scurry about: the cacophony of life neatly contained. Vacations and work trips, weddings and funerals, beginnings and endings. For C.J. Bostic and Sandra Force, it’s merely another day at the office. On a warm afternoon in early April at Dallas Love Field, C.J. and Sandra stroll into work just as they have for the past 45 years. But to the swelling group of Southwest Employees watching them swan through the terminal, it’s anything but mundane. Some wave, some call out, others sneak in for a hug. A woman with shoulder-length blonde hair and a rather official looking badge pulls out her smartphone to take a photo. “Forty-five years,” she says to no one in particular. “I have to get out of here. I’m starting to tear up!” It was a summer day in 1971 when 26-year-old Sandra Force, a former Miss Tennessee with blonde hair and a lolling Memphis drawl, was home at her Dallas apartment after teaching summer school at Amelia Earhart Elementary. “I knew this guy I had a crush on would be coming home for lunch,” she says. “As planned, he walked by the pool, and there I was in my pink bikini.” He stopped to talk and told her about a new airline that had everyone downtown buzzing. The fledgling company needed 40 Flight Attendants to jump-start operations. A now-famous ad petitioning actress Raquel Welch to join their ranks had run

in newspapers nationwide and would result in more than 1,200 applications. Word was spreading. Sandra slipped off her raft, dialed the listing, and went right down to interview. She walked out with a new job that afternoon. C.J. Bostic, an Air Force brat with cropped black hair and a megawatt smile, was 23 when she landed the job. After college, she modeled for Rothschild’s and Neiman Marcus. “You might say that
modeling was my runway into the hostess corp,” she told the Southwest Inflight magazine in 1973, when she was named “Hostess of the Month.” I first met C.J. and Sandra on that April day, about an hour before our plane to LaGuardia was scheduled to take off. We'd briefly exchanged pleasantries when, with great concern in her voice, C.J. suddenly asked our photographer and me if we'd eaten lunch. We hadn't.

“Do you like salad?” she asked. We nodded, and she sprinted away, returning minutes later with two of “the best airport salads around.” We were introduced to the Pilot, David Pattee, a 17-year veteran of the airline and, not coincidentally, C.J.’s former neighbor: Seventeen years ago, C.J. slipped a letter in his mailbox detailing why he should leave his current company and fly for Southwest. He still has it. As Passengers file onto the plane, Sandra smiles and bends to
greet every child. C.J. works the middle; it’s a full flight. Following the announcements, David comes on the intercom to inform everyone of the two “celebrities’’ on board. (Both C.J. and Sandra later tell me, in separate conversations, that neither subscribes to that notion, quickly listing off the names of the other original Flight Attendants still working: Sandra Bogan, Linda Pinka, Deborah Stembridge, and Jackie York.) He also tells Passengers of the pair's 45-year tenure.
After prepping for takeoff, C.J. settles in next to Sandra in the jump seat and catches her breath. “We started when we were 2,” she says. Laughter fills the cabin as David pushes back. Of course, it wasn’t all laughs in the beginning. “Southwest was like a short dog in tall grass,” Sandra says. “Nobody had ever heard of us. My mother always asked me why I didn’t go with Braniff or American or Delta.” She still remembers the day she went back and forth to Houston 12 times. “As long as someone was there, we had to go get them because we were trying to build our business up. I’ll never forget how my feet hurt after wearing those high-heeled boots for 12 legs.” Being an upstart had its advantages too. When one of the three planes had a mechanical issue, everyone was sent home. “We’d spend half the time in the morning just calling each other to see if we were still flying,” C.J. says. During overnights in Harlingen, Texas, their hotel gave them a car for trips to the beach. In 1974, Sandra appeared on the cover of Esquire, which touted Southwest as “The Best of America!” Today, C.J. compares their work to “inviting someone into your home. If you don’t make them feel welcome, they’re not going to come back. I just try to make People feel welcome.” It’s clear that some things haven’t changed at all. A few years back, both purchased what they call their “dream homes” within a short drive of one another, and they spent much of their free time shopping together at auctions and estate sales. These days, when they’re not 35,000 feet up, you’ll find them in their respective gardens. In March, Sandra’s daffodils won two blue ribbons at the Dallas Arboretum. “I like planting things and watching them grow,” she says.

this year, Southwest’s Adopt-APilot program will reach more than 38,000 students nationwide. Once a week for four weeks, Pilots visit classrooms to teach real-world lessons in math, science, and geography; impart values like honesty and tenacity; and dispense highly coveted bags of pretzels. While away on trips, they email photo updates so the kids can follow their travels. Pilots Patrick Badon, John Hurt, and James Haas have teamed up for years to inspire the fifthgraders at Purefoy Elementary in Frisco, Texas. They’ll continue for at least a few more—they’ve pledged to see James’ first-grade daughter through the program. “My dad was a private pilot, and he first took me flying when I was 11,” James says. “I remember the awe-inspiring view. That’s why I take these pictures and give them to the kids, to give them a different view of the world and allow them to see what drove me to this career.” june 2016

They’ve shown that you can develop space systems for less than one-tenth the cost and one-third the time that’s come to be accepted in the aerospace industry. They can develop not only reusable launch vehicles, but also reusable heavy lift vehicles, which we will need if we’re going to Mars. It will lower the cost
threshold, making it more likely for a president to approve. Nobody opposes these missions on principle—it’s cost. If we drop it, we lose the opposition. Furthermore, the same systems will enable other human endeavors in space—orbital industries, lunar development, asteroid mining. We’re talking about opening up the space frontier, which will also mobilize education efforts. You won’t fix education by testing kids to death. You need to inspire them, and youth love
diversity among the many alien species they met on their journeys. With all the boldly going through space and time, it remained grounded in the ’60s. The future always is now. It can only be what we envision at
adventure. Let’s challenge every kid: If you learn science, you can be an explorer of new worlds. That’s how you create the next generation of scientists. But we need to meet SpaceX halfway. It’s time for the government to be a customer. The government thought it would cost $36 billion to build a heavy lift vehicle that would take us to the moon. Elon Musk said he can do it for $1.6 billion. We should take him up on it. If you can go somewhere by paying for the cab ride instead of building the cab, it’s a much simpler proposition.

ome time ago, this happened in the future: A man kissed his wife goodbye and left for work in his flying car. After a hard day pushing buttons, he and his aching finger returned to his apartment. He shared it with his homemaker wife, a son and daughter, a robotic maid, and a dog that he walked on a treadmill. For vacation, the man took his family to a convenient resort in a nearby galaxy, which seemed a lot like his neighborhood, only with more lights. Nobody traveled to truly new places. In short, the Jetsons were a typical middle-class future family of the era just before Southwest Airlines. But that’s precisely the problem with the future: Outside of quantum physics, where space and time get all wonky, the future always stays a step ahead. We’re limited to our cartoonish imagination, depicting the future as a kind of present with weird clothing and better gear. Star Trek, which premiered in 1966, did somewhat better with futurism. We even enjoy a few starship conveniences today; the Enterprise’s cool automatic doors now grace every grocery store entrance, and my daughter’s ringtone makes exactly the same sound as the starship’s communicators. But, again, that’s just cool gear. When it came to the important stuff, humanity et cetera aboard the Enterprise hardly seemed that futuristic. Its hierarchy matched that of a 20th-century battleship, and the crew spent a good deal of energy advocating tolerance and

out better in the years that follow our most hopeful times. When I was a kid, we couldn’t wait for the future to happen. I was in first grade in 1961, when John Kennedy told us we were going to put men on the moon and bring them back safely … by the end of the decade. How exciting, and agonizing, the president’s words were. To the moon! But not until I’m a teenager! As it turned out, the wait didn’t kill me. Lots of exciting futuristic delights compensated: TV dinners; my grandfather’s big color RCA Victor, which showed golf in living green along with the golfers’ faces (also in living green); the Frisbee; the Super Ball; the skateboard. There seemed no end to America’s kid-friendly inventiveness. The future dropped these gifts into our laps like time angels, sending back revolutionary Mustang cars and A-frame houses and the wonders of double-knit fashion. More importantly, it looked like we were poised to tackle almost anything that came our way, including poverty and civil rights. Even the moon shot was going to prove once and for all that the American way was superior to communism. Of course, the future of our past wasn’t all rosy. Rivers were so polluted that one of them actually caught fire. Older kids warned us not to eat snow, because the Russians were poisoning the flakes. Plus, we were definitely going to run out of oil by the year 2000. Even then I noticed that adults— who had less of a future to worry about than youngsters—tended to be the grouchiest about the years to come. In public surveys, a large

IF YOU WANT to know why nanotechnology is so exciting, it’s because we’re talking about the ability to understand and control matter that’s 1 to 100 nanometers in scale. By comparison, a single human hair is 80,000 nanometers wide. When you get down to 100 nanometers, the laws of conventional physics break down and give rise to new physical phenomena that can be exploited to build
better materials. What’s really exciting is that we’re at a tipping point. Lots of what is being developed in labs is finally being translated into commercial products. For instance, by using lightweight carbon nanotubes, we can replace metallic conductors in coaxial cables, which reduces their weight by 30 to 70 percent. Those cables will also improve conductivity in power transmission lines. A study by researchers at Rice University in Houston found that you could cut transmission losses by the equivalent of more than nine Hoover

a full-fledged fearful adult. But shortly after I began reporting in Washington, D.C., Earth Day came along. The movement was inspired in part by the Apollo astronauts, who took one of the greatest futuristic photographs ever taken, called “Earthrise.” It shows our tiny blue planet floating in the black vastness of space. Earth Day, it seemed, would change everything. We would clean up our skies and waters and save endangered species. In fact, we Americans did a lot with that optimistic belief. And though we face even scarier environmental threats today, I continue to believe in a bright future. Civilization is always steering toward a cliff, but somehow it always manages to veer in the right direction. That resilience is ingrained in us. The problem is that these days fewer people seem to share my faith in the days to come. Many of us want to stop the future rather than look forward to it. So how can we get back to that good-old-time future of our youth? We could talk to the experts, some of whom appear on these pages, and see what they foretell. Experts excel at spotting trends and making computer models. But their best predictions work like the prophecies in the Old Testament: They’re more about what will happen if we continue doing what we’re doing right now. Most predictions don’t actually pan out. The smartest humans aren’t much better prognosticators than your average house cat. Even Wernher von Braun, the brilliant German rocket scientist who led postwar

Right now we have a network of energy that’s very restricted; you buy it only from a few people. But why can’t energy be more like the Internet? The idea is that we’d layer an Internet-like topography over the existing system, flooding it with cheaper, renewable energy owned and generated by everyone—schools, communities, and so on—who would sell energy into the grid. If you open that up in the way that Airbnb opened up your ability to sell your spare room, you’ll get this massive shift, and fossil fuels will be edged out by renewables. It may sound fanciful, but it’s already happening. Vandebron, a startup in the Netherlands, relies on this exact business model. There’s a version in the UK called OpenUtility. Now think about most global conflicts. At their core, we’re actually talking about resource issues: land, energy, and water. But when you have a “squanderable abundance,” as Ethernet pioneer Bob Metcalfe put it, you give nations the ability to solve their resource problems and focus more attention on other things, like the desalination of water. There’s a ripple effect of positive change.

ing about the future; it’s a kind of exploration. So permit me to indulge in a few auguries of my own. They’re guaranteed to be at least as good as the thoroughly inaccurate ones experts have made in the past. Forty-five years from now: Kids will listen to horrible music. Buildings will look as if hobbits designed them. Before you visit a restaurant, you’ll be able to sample dishes on your smartphone (or whatever the device, or implant, will be called). Real will beat virtual. Robots will not rule over us, but persistent pessimists and sci-fi fans will continue to expect to one day bow to humanoid overlords. Young people of all kinds and predilections will continue to marry. More weddings will happen in beautiful places. Southwest will be negotiating for more slots in Kelleher Lunar Spaceport.

One day I asked him, “What do you think America will be like a generation from now?” He bent his large head over a perfectly knotted tie, then looked right at me. “You mean the important things? Or the unimportant things?” “The important things.” “Well!” He sat back. “That’s easy. Young people will fall in love. Trees will grow. If we’re lucky, the loons will call on the Boundary Waters.” He thought for a while. “That’s about it.” He told me these predictions many years ago, and they all came true. Teamwork is essential to revitalizing public spaces in every city. In cities all over the world, people are coming together to improve the public spaces that matter to them. They call what they’re doing “placemaking,” and while this community-based process can happen anywhere from a parking lot to a historic park, the most successful projects share three characteristics: They’re led by passionate people; they’re responsive to the needs of the local community; and they rely on the support of a range of partners. To create a great public space, everyone in the community needs to be involved in creating a shared vision for what that place can be. The best way to begin is by asking people in and around the place one question: “What do you want to do here?” When you’re ready to start making things happen, it’s important to involve many different partners. Diverse partnerships ensure that the full spectrum of a community’s talent, resources, enthusiasm, and creativity is utilized. They also allow more than one group to share responsibility for the space. In Portland, Maine, Friends of Congress Square Park is leading a coalition of partners to activate
and enliven Congress Square Park. With support from Southwest Airlines’ Heart of the Community program, along with local donors, the group has transformed a neglected downtown park into a lively destination. Since forming in 2013, Friends has hosted hundreds of events with a variety of partners, including the Portland Swing Project, Pickwick Independent Press, and the Maine Hip-Hop Summit. And partners aren’t just part of big events. The success of everyday activities in the park—like yoga and tai chi classes, a weekly knitting group, and rotating art installations—depends on continued collaboration with Portland’s small business owners, creative professionals, and committed Friends volunteers. Our public spaces can be bustling centers of exchange, areas for recreation and relaxation, and true town squares where everyone feels welcome. But this is only possible when everyone is involved in creating and sustaining these places. Tom Hanks was the first celebrity I met in New York. I’d only been there for a couple weeks, and he didn’t know me from Adam. His words to me were just “to persevere.” Ten years later, he attended a Broadway show I played the lead in, and he signed a photo for me: “To Patrick, who persevered.” Drive is important. Hustle is important. You can’t look at the top of the staircase and want to be there. You have to look at the step directly ahead of you and ask yourself, “How do I climb that step?”
