WON’T PAY FOR ITSELF. Switch to GEICO and save money for the things you love.
Maybe it’s finding the perfect restaurant in the travel guide for that local flavor. Or landing in a new city you’ve never been to. Travel is what you love – and it doesn’t come cheap. So switch to GEICO, because you could save 15% or more on car insurance. And that would help make the things you love that much easier to get.

Gary’s Greeting
Investing in our Future One of my favorite quotes from Southwest’s Founder (and my mentor) Herb Kelleher is, “If you rest on your laurels, you’ll get a thorn in your [you know what]!” I’ve always taken that advice to heart, especially given how successful Southwest has been throughout our 46-year history. Future success is never guaranteed, which is why it’s important that we continue to invest in our business and prepare for the future. Southwest is coming off the most transformative period in our history over the past 10 years. In that relatively short time, we have replaced our frequent flyer program; acquired and integrated AirTran Airways; launched international
service; introduced two new Boeing 737 aircraft into our fleet (the -800 and the MAX 8); retired our older, Classic -300 fleet; and replaced our reservation system. And those are just the highlights. Today, Southwest is as strong, healthy, and poised for the next five decades as any point in our history. But you won’t find us resting on our laurels! Looking ahead, we have a multiyear plan to invest in airports, equipment, facilities, and technologies. These investments are critical to enable new and better capabilities, and they will lay the foundation for the Southwest of future generations. We have major airport projects underway in Los Angeles, Denver, Kansas City,
Chicago (Midway), and New Orleans— among others. We are using wayfinding innovations to help Customers navigate their way from the curb to their flight. We have massive efforts underway to improve the Customer Experience and enhance our digital capabilities. Along the same lines, we are making significant investments in our internal technology tools to make life easier on our Employees and better equip them to serve our Customers. And, perhaps most exciting of all, we are equipping our airplanes to be ETOPS (Extended-range Twin-engine Operational Performance Standards) certified, which is required for extended overwater flying that will allow us to serve one of our next destinations: Hawaii! Tickets for those flights will be available for purchase later this year. While we prepare for the future, you have our commitment that we will always focus on the basics—the Safety and Reliability of our operation and the Hospitality of our People—all the while staying true to our low-fare brand of Transfarency, with nothing to hide. I hope it’s reassuring to know that some things will never change.

The A-List
“Every person has his or her own unique story, and I love that about travel.” —ROBERTO TREVIÑO, PRESIDENT OF WASTE OPERATIONS, SOUTHERN ENTERPRISES For some, a Southwest Boeing 737 is the means to get to a destination. For A-Lister Roberto Treviño, the destination is the aircraft itself. There are few places he loves more than the sky, and decades ago, Roberto promised himself he’d fly to every operating Southwest city. Thirty years later, he fulfilled his dream. In six months, Roberto visited Southwest’s 100 destinations using Rapid Rewards points. In the air, he enjoyed getting to know Southwest Employees and fellow travelers. You can find Roberto’s story and photos on Southwest Community, and you might just see his friendly face onboard your next flight. Congratulations, Roberto! —Claire Daniel, Marketing A LESSON A DAY “My passion is education. DIVE DEEP
Dedicated to Mexico
Southwest Airlines spreads low fares beyond our borders. Southwest began international flights to Mexico in 2014. Since then, we’ve added to our schedule in order to offer Customers convenient and affordable flights with the best Customer Service— extending our commitment to Transfarency® beyond the U.S. When we started service, we offered seven flights a day to three cities in Mexico—Cancun, Cabo San Lucas/Los Cabos, and Mexico City. We added one flight a day to a fourth city, Puerto Vallarta, in 2015. This summer, we’ll operate nearly 50 flights a day on Saturdays between the U.S. and Mexico, with half of those to and from Cancun. As we continue to grow, we’re adding to our domestic route map to offer Customers more options for both nonstop
and connecting flights to Mexico. This month, we’ll add two cities in California as international gateway cities when we begin Cabo San Lucas/Los Cabos service on Saturdays from both San Jose and Sacramento. Puerto Vallarta service on Saturdays and Sundays from San Diego will join the current daily Cabo service. By June, the additions of New Orleans, Columbus, Indianapolis, Raleigh-Durham, and Pittsburgh will bring us to a total of 21 gateway cities in the U.S. that offer service to or from Mexico. In addition to offering flights to Mexico, we also serve Aruba, the Bahamas, Belize, the Cayman Islands, Costa Rica, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, and Turks and Caicos Islands. Visit Southwest.com/international for a list of Southwest destinations. Need more inspiration? Southwest Airlines supports military members. At Southwest Airlines, we’re proud of the military men and women, both past and present, who have bravely served around the globe. Values that are instilled in the military reflect the same values that matter to our Employees. We are honored to work alongside the more than 7,600 veterans in our ranks. Our military men and women bring a unique skill set to Southwest that translates across our workgroups—leadership skills, discipline, reliability, teamwork, and the ability to work in tough situations. Those who have served or are serving in the armed forces know it takes resilience, putting service before self, and being a team player to create a cohesive unit. We empower our Employees to embody a Warrior Spirit, Servant’s Heart, and FunLUVing Attitude every day—all attributes those with military experience are accustomed to exhibiting. Military members’ loved ones are a part of the Southwest Family, too. Through our national part-
nerships and Tickets for Time program, Southwest supports military-focused organizations, including Honor Flight Network, Team Rubicon, Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, The Mission Continues, Folds of Honor, and the Warrior Initiative at Center for BrainHealth® at The University of Texas at Dallas. These organizations represent a variety of services offered to different branches of the military, veterans, and their families. Partnering with military-focused nonprofits has enabled Southwest to further express our appreciation and admiration for those who have served. The Southwest way is a lifestyle, and like the military, we look for those who exemplify the Golden Rule and pursue excellence in all they do. as a faithful San Francisco 49ers fan. Despite living in Southern California since the mid1980s, I remain loyal to my team. In fact, I bought season tickets when they opened their new stadium in 2014 and make a point of going to virtually all of the home games. As I boarded a recent return flight home, I remembered leaving my favorite 49ers sweatshirt in the TSA area. I spoke to flight attendant Bruce Parsons to simply find out
AN UNEXPECTED VISIT
I was scheduled to fly from New Orleans back home to Milwaukee, but I knew before arriving to the airport that my flight was delayed and I would not make my connecting flight home. I went directly to the ticket counter to find out what my options were. There, I had the pleasure

who to call at the airport when I returned home. He provided some feedback and then said, “I can’t make any promises, but let me see what I can do.” Once I got into my seat, I closed my eyes and began to nod off. All of a sudden, I got a gentle tap on my shoulder. I opened my eyes and all I could see was the 49ers logo on my sweatshirt. As I looked up, I saw Bruce and flight attendant Maria Hank with smiles on their faces. Their efforts, along with those of flight attendant Natalie Mrozek, were worthy of a touchdown celebration dance. Later, I asked Bruce how the crew was able to get to the TSA area so quickly. Bruce said, “The Captain rushed down to get it for you.” I had the pleasure of thanking Captain Philip Heidmous for his customer service. He simply smiled and said, “It genuinely was my pleasure to assist you.” You truly are the perennial customer satisfaction Super Bowl champions in the industry. —Joseph Anibale

of being served by customer service agent Rachel Pilley. She checked my reservation, confirmed the delay, and began checking to see what options were available. Once she realized that I was not getting back to Milwaukee that night, she politely said, “Where would you like to spend the night?” I appreciated her humor. She began to read me options, all of which meant I would fly there, spend the night, and then fly to Milwaukee the next day. I then responded with a question of my own: “Can I spend the night in Orlando?” She then worked with me to get an afternoon flight from Orlando to Milwaukee. My daughter lives in Orlando, I only see her a few times a year. Rachel booked my flight to Orlando separate from the flight from Orlando to Milwaukee, so I could get my bags when I arrived in MCO, rather than having them transferred for the “connecting” flight the following day. My daughter got off work in time to get me at the airport, I spent the night with her, and we had the next morning together. It was a wonderful,
unexpected 14 hours with my daughter, and I have Rachel to thank for it. She is just one of the reasons I and my family remain loyal Southwest customers. —Jan McIntosh FAMILY FIRST
I have never experienced compassion in customer service at the level that I experienced it from Southwest Airlines. I got to the airport in Las Vegas and realized that I had to choose an alternate flight. This would have been fine on any other day; however, I had just found out that my wife, pregnant with twins, was having complications and was being rushed to the ER in Nashville. I started to cry at the kiosk. Customer service agent Jonoa Savou approached me and asked what was wrong. When I told her, she immediately took me to the desk and moved things around to get me on an earlier flight with no extra charge. This helped me get home five hours sooner to be with my wife. Again, I’m so thankful I chose Southwest. —Carly Nichols
THE BEST FLIGHT
For the last year, I have traveled every four weeks or so to oversee the care of my dad, who has dementia. I was able to get him in a facility near my home, which meant the task of getting him from Illinois to New York and having him feel safe. My dad is a retired aircraft mechanic and pilot, and in his world, he still works inspecting and overhauling aircraft engines. We had an early flight from Indianapolis to Baltimore, and then on to Long Island MacArthur Airport. While at the gate in Indianapolis, I asked the gate crew if we could board early so my dad could visit with the pilots. They were more than happy to meet this request. My dad really enjoyed his conversation with them and looking at the avionics in the cockpit. As we were on approach into Islip, he looked out the window, held my hand, and smiled. Thank you, Southwest, Captain Travis Gish, and Captain Nathan Walker, for giving my dad the best flight home. —Susan Edwards

With highlighters and post-it notes in hand, Meagan read the 222-page Texas state child care standards… four times. The Van Dyck’s chose to build their community in a “small, big town” near Texas A&M University at the Kiddie Academy of College Station. Meagan and Brian were aware of the challenges of venturing into an unknown-for-them industry, but knew they would succeed with the support of Kiddie Academy, their experienced and knowledgeable franchisor. Dear Reader,
This issue has stories on two of my favorite things: pinball, and an underappreciated sport. The one takes balance, coordination, and heavy breathing. The other is cross-country skiing. “Nordic skiing,” aficionados (“Nordies”) call it. While most people look forward to winter’s banishment this time of year, Nordies treat the season as their own frigid Eden. “There’s no bad weather, only bad clothing,” they like to say. And, redundantly: “Attitude is everything.” Many years ago, I skied with members of the Geriatric Adventure Society, a mature group that went on annual backcountry ski adventures along the Canadian border. Three of us decided to ski some 30 miles into camp, following the course of a brook. We set out in the middle of the January thaw, when the temps rise well above freezing and the snow turns soft and slow. We slogged for hours well after dark, pulling sleds loaded with supplies, when it began to rain. The guy in the lead came to a stop,
staring at the brook. “Either that water is flowing in the wrong direction,” he said, “or we’re going the wrong way.” We turned around, resigned to keep skiing through the night. “Well,” I found myself saying, “at least I’m not working.” I was unhappy in my job and lacked the courage to quit. Suddenly, it occurred to me that all I had to do to keep my spirits up was to think about work, and how I wasn’t doing it. I vowed right then to spend the rest of my life not working. Oh, I do stuff to earn checks. Sometimes I feel like I’m slogging in the dark, but I’m still having fun. When the fun stops, I take it as a sign to turn around. And so I became a Nordie. Attitude is everything.

Meagan worked in human resources. Brian worked as an oil and gas drilling consultant overseeing drilling locations in Texas. Between the two of them, neither of the Van Dycks had a résumé of expertise in the field of educational child care. Nor did they have entrepreneurial experience running an independently owned and operated business. But what they lacked in experience, they made up for with a zealous spirit and in doing all their homework to fulfill a growing need in their community.

Brush better. Traveling with an electric toothbrush can be, quite literally, a buzzkill. Named one of Time Magazine’s Best Inventions of 2016, quip changes that. Sleek and budget-friendly, quip (from $25) runs 3 months on a single battery — so you can cleanse the memory of carting around a clunky charger. There is also a nifty travel case, which, thanks to a suction strip, doubles as a mirror

Sign up for a subscription service (from $5), and every three months you’ll get a fresh brush-head, toothpaste refills (including a travel-sized option), and a charged battery. Dear Editor,
I was on a Southwest flight going back to college when I looked through the magazine and stumbled upon Michael Graff’s article on Conner Youngblood [“Picture This in a Song,” January 2018]. I really enjoyed reading it, especially the part when Conner was categorizing the birds he saw on a lake. It made me smile. Thank you again for taking time to explore this man’s story.

Saw @Conner_ YngBlood at a @sofarsounds show in Dallas back in 2015. Catching up on his recent adventures in nature & music on my @SouthwestAir flight—full-circle moment. (PS: His new song from the trip is Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge) Great story, @michaelngraff
@ericazazo The new Conner Youngblood track is just … one of the most beautiful indie/acoustic tracks we’ve found in a while .
Stereofox I really enjoyed the January cover article. It felt both big and intimate. Like a short flight at sunset.

We spend

hours a week listening to music.
PHOTOGRAPHY BY IZUSEK/ISTOCK
If that strikes a chord, you’re not alone. According to Nielsen’s 2017 Music 360 study, we dedicate a lot of time to tunes, and that consumption hit a high note last year: Our seven-day listening totals are up from 26.6 hours in 2016 and 23.5 hours in 2015. That rise in rhythm is tied closely to technology, with streaming services gaining traction and more devices than ever allowing us to press play on our favorite songs. In fact, in a normal week, we use an average of 3.4 gadgets to listen to music. Smartphones are our go-to option, laptops play second fiddle, and TVs round out the top three. In other words, we’re all ears.
JAM SESSIONS The report also found that 32 percent of us share our playlists with others, up from 24 percent in 2016.

PLAY Drink MAKE IT ↙ Combine 1½ ounces Dulce Vida pineapple-jalapeno tequila, ½ ounce Ancho Reyes Verde liqueur, ½ ounce lime juice, ¼ ounce orange juice, ¼ ounce lemon juice, ¼ ounce jalapenoinfused agave nectar*, and 8 dashes mole bitters into a shaker tin. Add ice and shake vigorously. Rim an ice-filled glass with sal de gusano. Pour contents of shaker tin into glass. Garnish with a jalapeno slice. *Take equal parts agave nectar and jalapeno-infused water and stir until combined.
Alter the spice level by varying the length of time the jalapeno water infuses.

Bring the Heat Worm salt. The phrase doesn’t exactly sound appetizing. But sal de gusano? Now we’re getting somewhere. The traditional Mexican spice blend—made, yes, with dried worms—finds its way onto the edge of your drink at Jalisco Norte in Dallas. The menu’s stuffed with 15-plus agave-spirit cocktails, but hotheads reach for the Bring the Heat margarita. Pineapple-jalapeno tequila, green chile liqueur, jalapeno-infused agave nectar, and a healthy portion of mole bitters are balanced with a blend of citrus fruits and capped with sal de gusano. You may never go back to kosher salt.

TRE NDING
Bread Pudding
A few years ago, chef Jeremiah Bacon of The Macintosh in Charleston, South Carolina, was searching for a way to broaden the appeal of bone marrow, the rich, unctuous gold found inside cow bones. At the same time, he was trying to come up with a new brunch item. Out of those two pursuits, the Mac Attack was born. A slab of brioche is soaked in cream, eggs, and rendered bone marrow, and then seared. The bread pudding is capped with pork belly, a poached egg, and hollandaise. To wash it down and cut through the fat, Bacon recommends the restaurant’s pickled bloody mary. (We’d recommend a nap as well.)

Clothes, toiletries, maybe an extra pair of shoes—there’s only so much you can pack. That means those specialty items, the things that make a house a home, often get left behind. Not at Halcyon in Denver. The 154-room hotel in the Cherry Creek neighborhood was created with home in mind. There’s no check-in desk, just a sleek slab bar, complete with Intelligentsia espresso (or a pour of bourbon in the evening). Head to the gear garage to sign out a mountain bike, a Piaggio scooter, or a backpack with a GoPro and binoculars. According to Workfront’s State of Enterprise Work Report, we’re the most annoyed when we hear that four-word phrase in the conference room. (“Bandwidth” and “at a high level” were other top offenders.) “One of the biggest things that gets in the way of being effective at work is clearly communicating,” says Workfront CEO Alex Shootman. “If I tell you to ‘think outside the box,’ what does that actually mean?” For a fun way to curtail clichés, Shootman suggests “buzzword bingo.” At your next meeting, craft a card with trite phrases and listen up. If you collect a bingo, politely point out who dropped the most jargon. Circle back and let us know how it goes.

REI is celebrating its 80th anniversary in 2018.
NOVEL CONCEPT As an English major, I think a well-written novel has more lessons on leadership than most business books. My favorite is Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry.
For REI’s chief creative officer, purposeful action speaks louder than words. I was relatively new to the job when we shared the idea for #OptOutside in 2015, and that was probably a good thing because I didn’t know enough to understand how risky it was. The power of #OptOutside lies in real action: closing our stores on Black Friday and still paying every employee. We led with our purpose and put employees first, and that made it easy to understand why it was the right choice for REI. It’s about starting a
new tradition and celebrating the people and places we love. Now, #OptOutside has become a platform for people to tell their stories, and I feel a responsibility to keep it pure. At REI, we consider ourselves to be stewards of the outdoors, and we’re comfortable leaning into spaces that are important to us—like public lands and gender equity in the outdoors. We’re a different kind of company because we’re willing to take a different type of action.

THOUGHT LEADER John Muir moved presidents, Congress, and the public to reimagine their relationship with the outdoors. Many of America’s most iconic places wouldn’t be here today, if not for the language he used to inspire people to think differently.

Break Up With Your Phone
A better relationship starts with less screen time, says behavior guru Catherine Price. What’s the first step? “Breaking up with your phone doesn’t mean throwing it away. Consider your goal and don’t think of it as punitive. It’s not ‘I’m trying to restrict myself’ but instead ‘I’d like to be more productive and could be if I didn’t check my phone during this time.’ Ask yourself: Is this what I want to be paying attention to right now? I 46 Southwest march 2018

actually recommend setting that phrase as your lock screen, so whenever you reach for your phone, you’re reminded to check in with yourself.”
How do you identify your problem areas? “Use an app. Moment (iOS) and Offtime (Android) track how much time you’re spending on your phone and which apps are
Does social media play a role in our habits? “Yes, it’s designed to be addictive. The best way to incentivize repeat behavior is through intermittent rewards. People will keep checking their feed because there might be something good. Try deleting the apps from your phone. Also, the default notification settings are meant to get you to use the app as much as possible. I limit it to notifications from real people whose messages I want to receive immediately; only calls, texts, and calendar alerts make the cut. I disable notifications for emails because it’s one of the biggest distractions.” What are other ways to set boundaries? “Society’s relationship with phones isn’t going to change unless there’s a cultural recognition that it’s an issue. Recognize the context in which you have power to set the boundaries. Leave your phone at your desk when you go to lunch, don’t allow phones at the dinner table, or space out in your Uber instead of checking your phone. It’s rejuvenating to give our brains a break.” ILLUSTRATION BY PAUL BLOW

Frame of Mind
Use these stylish specs to fend off eye fatigue. Talk about a sight for sore eyes. By reducing glare and filtering blue light emitted by electronic devices, Felix Gray’s line of computer glasses (from $95) can help prevent headaches, ease the effects of eyestrain, and relieve blurred vision and dry eyes. The neutrally hued, unisex frames come in six styles, each named for a notable person—like mathematician John Nash and astronaut Mae Jemison. Although Felix Gray’s standard lens setting is non-prescription, you can add magnification or a reading prescription as you see fit. No matter which combo you choose, rest assured that these specs will pass their screen test.
Still feeling the strain? The American Optometric Association suggests the 20-20-20 rule: taking a 20-second break to view something 20 feet away every 20 minutes. Other tips include adjusting your computer screen’s location (ideally, it should be 20-28 inches from your eyes) and remembering to blink frequently.

Swim lessons, sing-alongs, cooking classes— enjoy instant access to children’s activities.
Here’s how CEO Solomon Liou describes the subscription service: My co-founders and I are friends from college, and when we became parents, our lives radically changed. It was a new, wonderful world to navigate New York as a parent, but it also came with challenges. We all felt like the process for finding great kids activities was both frustrating and time-consuming, so we decided to fix that out of our own need. With KidPass, you sign up online or on our iOS app, and you select one of three membership
plans depending on how many activities you want to do each month. You can search by age, category, and neighborhood, and our activities include everything from soccer to robot-building workshops. When you find the activity you want, you book it and show up. Simple as that. I usually talk about three aspects of KidPass: discovery, variety, and convenience. You get access to thousands of activities and book them with a touch of a button.

This playing field has a slight downward grade, so that the ball inevitably rolls back to the bottom of the machine and toward the flippers. When the ball slips between the flippers, into a space called the drain, your turn is over. (At this point, the player in question often curses.) Skilled players can win free games, or extra balls, by earning enough points or by completing a complex set of tasks. The machines themselves, especially the vintage models I played as a kid, are gorgeous, with a scoreboard, or back glass, that rises above the playing field like an illuminated mini-billboard. The games also make a lot of noise, which, to the trained ear, represents a kind of improvised symphony: the percussive pops of the jet bumpers, the jaunty chimes of a spinner, the dulcet dings of bonus points piling up. Even more alluring are Players at the kinetic and tactile aspects of the game, the vibraChuck Webster’s tional thud of a well-struck ball, the thrill of watching Wicked Pissa Pinball Pit that ball sail off your flipper and up a corkscrew ramp, in Wakefield, or into a chute that activates multi-ball mode. Greg Bond (center), But if I drill down past the visceral experiences of Webster, and pinball, what I truly loved was the feeling of testing my Mitch Curtis. skill and guile against a particular machine, the human quest for mastery that afflicts the competitive and masochistic. To make a particularly tough shot under pressure, to save a ball that appeared headed for the drain with a strategic nudge or a brilliant bit of flipper work—these were feats that would draw gasps from fellow players. During hot streaks, I would become vulnerable to the audacious notion that I could somehow beat the machine by winning extra balls and free games. It never worked, of course. In pinball, as in life, you can never escape the inevitability of death. Sooner or later, even the most accomplished player is going to suffer the indignity of watching his or her last ball drain. That’s the eternal fantasy that drove me into the embrace of pinball: a garish mechanized yearning for immortality, a peculiar greed for sensation that marked my childhood.

the year i turned 11, in 1978, I arrived at Shakey’s one
afternoon to discover that Cleopatra had been ditched in favor of a new game called Space Invaders. Gone were the flippers, the silver ball, and the ornate artwork, replaced by what amounted to a television screen with row upon row of pixelated aliens. A year later, Asteroids arrived. Then Missile Command and Galaga and Defender. By the mid’80s, pinball culture had been gobbled up by Pac-Man and his pals. I played my share of video games over the years. But I never felt the same buzz pinball had provided. So I turned my attention elsewhere: sports, girls, journalism. I eventually found my way to Boston and a life devoted to writing, teaching, and raising kids. I thought nothing about pinball. And then this past summer, my friend Michael mentioned that he’d started playing in a pinball league and asked whether I might want to tag along some night. I put him off for a couple of months, telling myself I was too busy. In fact, I was kind of terrified. It was sort of like being asked to go out for beers with an old flame whose loss you never quite processed.

“A pinball league—how crazy is that?” I kept telling my wife. “Just go already,” she said, sighing, around the 50th time I mentioned it. “If you insist,” I replied. And so, on a chilly autumn night three months ago, Michael and I drove up to Nashua to play in a weekly tournament at the Southern New Hampshire Pinball Club, located in a warehouse I’ll generously describe as unfurnished. Despite the derelict vibe, the club itself was enchanting: 15 mint condition machines lined up beneath gray plasterboard walls. They had Aztec! They had Strikes and Spares! They had Charlie’s Angels! The last time I’d played these games, I hadn’t even hit puberty. And yet, the moment the tourney started, the old instincts came whooshing back into my fingers. I didn’t remember the rules of any of the games. But I was able to beat a few guys on the strength of those instincts and dumb luck. I wound up placing third out of 12 and winning back my $20 buy-in. The tourney ended at 9 o’clock but I kept going. By the time Michael pried me away from Space Shuttle, I’d played pinball for 2 1/2 hours straight without paying a cent, a feat that struck me as nearly miraculous. I arrived home at midnight, still elated, my fingertips swollen from slapping at the flipper buttons.
i now officially
had what Michael called “the fever.” He certainly knew something about this malady, having purchased his own pinball machine shortly after our road trip. I proceeded directly to his home to test drive his new acquisition: a 1977 classic called Jungle Queen, which I played until Michael gently evicted me from his basement. “You should come to Chuck’s place,” he said. “You’re ready.” I didn’t know who Chuck was, but a few days later, I found myself

parking in front of a home in the quiet suburb of Wakefield, Massachusetts. The only unusual feature was a sandwich board perched on the snow-crusted lawn. It read: “Wicked Pissa Pinball Pit,” with an arrow pointing toward the back of the house. I ducked through a tiny door and descended a set of stairs into what I can only describe as The Man Cave of My Dreams: 22 pinball machines crammed into a basement about the size of 23 pinball machines. There were 30 other pinball freaks on hand, along with a couple of folding tables upon which sat a Crock-Pot full of chili and an ungodly supply of candy. The games were cleverly curated: a quartet of Star Trek machines in one room, another full of rock-themed machines (AC/DC, Guns N’ Roses, Metallica), a third with classics such as Captain Fantastic and good old Evel Knievel. As league play commenced, two things became instantly apparent. First, the newer machines were far more elaborate. Along with the basic elements—bumpers, flippers, drain—came a Rube Goldbergian blizzard of ramps, chutes, electromagnets, special effects. Some included a miniature pinball game within the larger playing field. Second, and somewhat predictably, I was way out of my depth. I tallied 2 million points in my first game, which sounds impressive until you consider the scores of the league veterans in my group: 46 million, 37 million, and 21 million. Still, the enchanting thing about pinball is that even scrubs like me can go on unexpected runs, as I did a few matches later, when I triggered two multi-ball modes and racked up a final score of 84 million, more than quadrupling my nearest competitor. Overall, I came in third in my group, just beating out a guy named Derek, who, by the way, had just won a statewide tournament. To say I was satisfied with my visit to the Wicked Pissa Pinball Pit doesn’t quite capture my state of mind. I was something

closer to euphoric. I had long associated pinball with a certain strain of loner nerd. But the folks at the Pit were hypersocial. They cracked jokes and talked trash. They also presented a pretty wide demographic mix, from bearded hipsters to aging baby boomers. Half a dozen of the players were women. And nearly everyone I talked to invited me out to another pinball event. There were weekly confabs at local “barcades,” league nights, and more informal gatherings in the homes of hardcore collectors, such as our host, Chuck Webster. Chuck had the sort of thick Boston brogue and solid build one might associate with a Winter Hill mobster. But he was quick with a smile and even quicker with a gentle word of encouragement. Like me, Chuck had played pinball as a kid in the ’70s. He had participated in pinball’s brief resurrection in the ’90s, with the rise of lavish movie-themed games such as The Addams Family. But he had also weathered the near extinction that followed, as gaming systems swept the nation’s living rooms and industry giants such as Bally and Williams converted their production to a more profitable sector: slot machines. Chuck got his first pinball machine as a birthday gift from his wife, Nancy. She had no idea what she had triggered. Chuck soon taught himself how to restore machines by watching videos posted online by fellow pinball gearheads. Because machines include thousands of wires and specialized components, the dedicated restorer has to be a competent electrician, a solderer, and an artist. In fact, a big part of today’s pinball subculture is made up of guys like Chuck who track down rare models—haunting estate sales and internet forums—and then refurbish and resell them to collectors. Chuck isn’t so good at that last part, though. “He spends so many hours

fixing them up that he gets attached,” Nancy reports. “Then he can’t bear to sell them.” And thus, over the past decade, his collection has become the unofficial clubhouse to a growing rank of would-be wizards like me. Pinball is back from the dead, Chuck says, because people are tired of sitting alone in front of screens. “You saw it tonight: Folks want to hang out, and pinball forces you to do that.” More broadly, he sees pinball as a backlash against the digital world. “Pinball is analog. It’s a real, physical game, and for that reason, it’s totally unpredictable. Look at how you played on KISS tonight— you blew that game up!” (Have I mentioned how much I liked Chuck?) Of course, online games can also seem unpredictable. But veteran players eventually memorize the patterns, which are all based on preset computer code. You can’t code a steel ball. You can only try to manage its chaotic course. Nicole Bernier, who drove down to the Pit all the way from Maine, had never even played pinball four years ago, when a friend convinced her to check out a local league night. The first game she played was Flash Gordon. She plunged her first ball and it drained almost immediately. Second ball, same thing. She walked away with the lowest possible score that night—and a fierce determination to redeem herself. She now plays in three leagues and travels to tournaments all over the United States. (She’s not alone. According to the International Flipper Pinball Association, there were 487 tournaments worldwide in 2009. Last year there were 4,827.) Nicole loves the social aspect of pinball. But what got her truly hooked was the rules. She loves rules. And pinball is all about rules. Every game has a different rule set. You learn those and you know exactly what you need to do. I heard this over and over again

from experienced players. But I didn’t believe it myself until the end of the night, when Chuck and a few other hotshots coached me through a game. At each stage, they told me exactly what shots I needed to make. By ball three, I had collected all six of the game’s “bonus monsters” and activated the multi-ball setting.

as i dove deeper into the New England pinball scene, I kept hearing about a guy named Bowen Kerins. His name was uttered with the reverence generally reserved for major religious figures. Not only was Bowen a threetime world champion, but he also probably ranked as the most famous pinball player on earth, owing to a series of wildly popular online video tutorials. He also happened to live a half hour north of Boston. So I figured, What the heck. I’d give the guy a call and see if he was willing to take on an aging apprentice. This was how I found myself at a barcade in Everett, playing pinball with the legendary Bowen Kerins. Actually, I didn’t do much playing. My average ball lasted approximately 15 seconds. Bowen’s lasted 15 minutes. Pinball, he explained, came down to three skills: aiming, nudging, and control. I knew about the first two, of course. But the third, as practiced by Bowen, anyway, was a revelation. Most pinball players operate on the assumption that the way to succeed is to keep the ball at the top of the playing field, away from the drain and the deadly “out lanes” on either side of the flippers. So they whack at the ball whenever it comes close to the flippers. Bowen did just the opposite. He used his flippers to trap and stall the ball, over and over. This allowed him to study the playing field and methodically aim at whatever game element would garner the most points.
F1_pinball_DE.indd 64
Most remarkably, Bowen did this even when he was in multiball mode. I watched, agog, as he trapped three and even four balls with his flippers, and then sent each of them whizzing at specific targets, one after another. Whereas my average multi-ball session had the feel of an electronic firefight, Bowen operated like a sniper. He used a sophisticated arsenal of techniques, many of which I’d never seen before. The Dead Bounce: Bowen routinely allowed balls to bounce off his flippers, deadening their momentum until they were slow enough to trap. The Tip Pass: When a ball was moving too fast to be controlled by one flipper, he would raise that flipper like a drawbridge and the ball would sail up and over the drain, landing softly enough on the other flipper to be trapped. The Live Catch: With a ball rocketing toward one flipper, Bowen would slap that flipper so that its momentum, at the precise moment of contact, canceled the momentum of the oncoming ball. This was the most astonishing and difficult of all his moves. It looked like he was putting the ball into a sleeper hold with his flipper. A scrum of fellow players soon materialized around our machine, Twilight Zone. One filmed Bowen with his phone. Bowen’s final score, a shade under 2 billion, earned him four free games. As we retired to a quieter precinct, Bowen mentioned his personal best on Twilight Zone: 8 billion. I had many questions, but they all boiled down to the same one: How in God’s name did you get so good at pinball? Bowen told me his dad got him hooked early on. “I loved the free game aspect. You mean the better I get, the cheaper it gets to play? I liked that plan!” He arrived at Stanford University, in 1992, with no real sense of how good he was. All he knew was CONTINUED ON PAGE 65

that he was the best player in Newport, Rhode Island. Luckily for him, two of the world’s top players—Rick Stetta and Neil Shatz—lived nearby. He haunted local arcades, hoping they would show up. When they did, he played with them and studied their technique. “They taught me how to shake the machine,” Bowen recalled. “Up to that point, I’d never seen anyone do that. I thought it was illegal. But to see the skill with which these guys used their body to manipulate the ball’s trajectory—it changed the game completely for me. Because in competition, your ball is your life.” In 1994, Bowen traveled to New York City for the Professional and Amateur Pinball Association World Championships. He gave no thought to winning the event. He just wanted the chance to play alongside his idols and learn. Instead, he took the title, at the ripe old age of 18. “Here I am, a sophomore in college, and they hand me $4,000 and a new pinball machine. It was friggin’ fantastic. It was a dream.” Unofficially, Bowen remains one of the top players in the world. But these days, he’s become more of an ambassador for the game. He organizes the world’s largest match-play pinball tournament, a Pittsburgh-based event called Pinburgh that draws 800-plus players from around the globe and offers $100,000 in prize money. He offers free online tutorials, hoping to help young players in the same way he was helped. And he’s been delighted by the growing diversity in pinball, including leagues for women in more than a dozen cities. “For years, pinball was a highly macho, even sexist scene. But when you get a critical mass of Not White Dudes playing, you don’t see that crazy macho behavior. The larger goal is to spread the joy of the game to as many people as possible.” Bowen struck me as something like the Saint Paul of modern pinball, eager to spread the gospel of the game that had electrified his life. Playing alongside him had certainly inspired me. Long after he took off, I was
perched before a machine, attempting to master the Live Catch. It took me an hour (and $10 in tokens), but when I finally nailed it, I let out a whoop of triumph that echoed all the way back to my childhood.

if you’re anything at all like
me, you’re probably jonesing to play pinball right now. The good news: There are literally thousands of venues—from barcades to bowling alleys— scattered across the country. But a word of warning: Dabbling in pinball can lead to the full-blown fever. Lately, I’ve been cruising the various websites dedicated to pinball sales. And yes, I did recently bid on a vintage edition of the Cleopatra machine I played all those years ago at Shakey’s Pizza. I offered the seller $700. He wound up selling it for nearly twice that. But that’s okay. My friend Michael, who got me into all this, has urged me to be patient. It can take a few months to find the right machine at the right price, given the surge in demand. He himself just purchased a second machine. He also recently won an educational grant that will allow his ninth-grade history students to design their own pinball machines based on the Cold War. I, too, have been thinking about pinball in some of the same obsessive ways I did when I was young. So where does all this leave me? Am I harboring hopes of becoming a pinball wizard at the far side of 50? Not exactly. For the foreseeable future, I’ll simply be another newbie to the New England Pinball League, spending my Friday nights amid the ecstatic clamor of Chuck’s Wicked Pissa Pinball Pit, trash-talking and trading tips, learning how to nudge the machine just so, how to control the ball, and, hoping amid all the mayhem, to keep myself alive. At the sight of the first hill,
and I. There was no chance we’d be making elegant turns down it. Even the beginner pizza-pie method of going down a hill wasn’t easy on a dulledged set of light Nordic skis. I was already nervous about making him ski nearly 8 miles into our lodging for the night. Was I going to get one of us seriously hurt within sight of the parking lot? I looked over at him. He had just turned 10, and was wearing a Baltimore Ravens hat: purple, polyester, and probably not keeping his head particularly warm. But his dad lives in Baltimore, and my boy loves that team. The temperature was in the low 20s and dropping along with the sun. Even our big woolly Goldendoodle, Gryffindor, looked cold. Dolan had skied with me a handful of times in the previous couple of years, mostly on flat coastal trails back home in Midcoast Maine, and, mostly, with limited enthusiasm. He had some understanding that this was the deepest into the Maine wilderness I’d ever gone in my 50 years. He had no idea that this was the biggest hill I’d ever tried to go down on Nordic skis. “So,” I said, stabbing the snow with my ski pole. It was deep and packed, the perfect snow if you wanted to go fast. “Take it easy and don’t be afraid to let yourself fall if you start to get anxious. Use your poles to slow yourself down.”
His blue eyes took it all in. There was not a soul in sight, just low cloud cover and a frozen quiet. It was the first day of spring, which seems like a karmic joke, but entirely keeping with the awful winter we’d endured, weather-wise and personally. The vista in front of us, hills half dark with evergreen, half white with snow, was a dreamscape of winter. We’d had so much snow so far in 2015 that our destination, Little Lyford Lodge & Cabins, had prolonged its winter season an extra week to capitalize on last-minute bookers like us. Normally the staff would be kicking back, taking a little time off before the true spring season began in May. The Appalachian Mountain Club—a conservation and outdoor recreation organization—owns about 70,000 acres and three lodges, including Little Lyford, in and around the legendarily backand-knee-breaking last big stretch of the Appalachian Trail known as the 100-Mile Wilderness. my stomach dropped. If this were a downhill ski resort, it would make for a sweet bunny slope. But this was the edge of Maine’s 100Mile Wilderness and we were on cross-country skis, my little boy

no cars, no safety net, nowhere to buy a Gatorade or restock on granola. In the winter, these trails are passable only by snowshoe, ski, and snowmobile. We’d dropped our bags at a hut next to the parking lot, and shortly, one of the staff members from Little Lyford would arrive via a snowmobile equipped with a trailer, pick up our bags—stuffed with bedding and more warm clothing—and zip them out to our cabin. We just had to get ourselves there. I reached behind me to make sure I had put our water bottles in the side pockets of my backpack. With nearly 8 miles ahead of us, we’d get thirsty. Then I looked up to see Dolan shooting down the hill. No attempt to slow down, no screams of terror—he just went for it. I kicked off and followed. At the bottom, we grinned at each other in the cold. This whole cross-country skiing business had been my thing, the way I walked the dog in winter and got my exercise, but I wanted Dolan to experience it as I had, a fleet-footed way to explore a wilderness that might otherwise be closed off to us. Snow had a way of smoothing out the woods, making easy paths where there were none. It drew me in like the ocean in the summer. I wanted him to feel that way, to see no limits in it.
I
was born in Maine, and lived there until I went to college. But then, for close to 25 years, I spent only a few summers and mostly long vacations there. In my 20s, I fell in love with the California landscape and thought for some time that I might never move back to Maine, or only when I was very old. I would tell people in Northern California that Maine was beautiful but a little tame: the coastline gentler, the hills softer, life less exciting. I may have talked down to my home state somewhat. Indeed, I may have known nothing at all. Because I had never even seen Moosehead Lake until the drive here, when Dolan and I came down the last stretch of Route 15 toward its southernmost tip. Maine’s biggest lake was, as Henry David Thoreau wrote upon seeing it in 1853, “a suitably wild-looking sheet of water, sprinkled with small, low islands, which were covered with shaggy spruce and other wild wood.” I felt pulled north with a desire to see the lake in its entirety. But to get to AMC’s conservation lands and its network of lodges, one enters Greenville and immediately takes a right out of town, passing a series of quaint Victorians and then soon bumping along a dirt road for 11 miles to the trailhead. I was planning on using M&M’s as a lure march 2018 southwest 69

for Dolan, but the company of our dog would be the ultimate encouragement. Gryff never gets tired, and his enthusiasm is infectious. It turned out I didn’t need lures or enticements. We stayed on the groomed main trail, which is rated as the least-challenging way into Little Lyford—the distance is the hard part—and is wide enough for snowmobiles. We hadn’t seen a single snowmobile yet when we stopped for our first snack. Suddenly, we heard a series of yipping sounds, which lifted into a chorus. Gryff went into high alert. I’d heard coyotes out west, but never so many at once. And there we were, small boy and mother, on skis. “What is that?” Dolan asked. “Coyotes,” I said, trying to sound blasé when all I could think was, Are they going to tear my beloved dog apart in front of us? I loved The Call of the Wild, but I wasn’t eager to live out a scene from it in front of my son. “Sounds as though they’re hunting. Maybe
I leave every campsite relaxed, happy, and saying, Next time, we have to go for twice as long. they got a deer,” I said as I tucked the candy back into the backpack. “Let’s move it along, shall we?” We skied as fast as we could until we couldn’t hear the yipping anymore. I skied behind Dolan, protectively, and admired the way he was kicking. No slowing down, no whining, just steady progress toward our goal. The only timeline we were on was beating nightfall and reaching Little Lyford in time for 6 p.m. dinner. We passed signs for Gulf Hagas, a gorge often described as the “Grand Canyon of the East.” The wide trail we were on, the Katahdin Iron Works Road, continued farther on to the east. If we had more time, we could have skied along it all the way to a charcoal kiln and blast furnace that are
the only remnants of a once-booming iron works deep in the Maine woods. Opened in 1843, Katahdin Iron Works employed 400 people at its peak. It closed in 1890 and has been a historic site since 1965. We passed snowmobilers who seemed to be coming from that direction. It was nice to spot people, but there was also something slightly daunting about how small we were in comparison, just two humans on pairs of wooden sticks. The riders lifted gloved hands at us, nodding slightly beneath their layers of swaddling. I was relieved soon after when our directions took us off of the big “road” and onto trails where snowmobiles were forbidden. Here, we passed families coming out and a

few couples. “Only about another mile!” one shouted out to us. Instantly, I relaxed. We’d hit that point on a journey where you know you can outrun trouble, where you stop feeling so alone and start to re-enter, for lack of a better term, civilization. I’d never even considered driving 120 miles inland to go cross-country skiing; coastal Maine is full of beautiful, accessible trails. But I started noticing
F1_skiing_kt.indd 72
photos on social media of acquaintances’ trips into AMC’s Maine wilderness area. I’d seen photos of women I admired but didn’t know well with their sons, all about Dolan’s age, leaning on their ski poles, looking hardy and happy. Those pink-cheeked sons and sporty moms had made me wistful for both that kind of camaraderie and my own backcountry experience. Sometimes being a single
mother can be lonely, and often, it is draining. I never want to be the kind of parent who passes up an adventure because the responsibility lies with me to get us prepared, out the door, and into a wellpacked car. I leave the driveway for every camping trip exhausted from planning and telling myself I don’t have to do this. And then I leave every campsite relaxed, happy, and saying, Next time, we have to go for twice as long. But in winters, we tend to hunker down, focusing on Dolan’s hockey practices and games and the mundane questions of winter, like one big shovel after a storm, or one at the midpoint and another at the end? We’d had rough winters before, like the one where I shattered my wrist and needed surgery, or the one where our bathtub fell through the floor of our 1875 farmhouse-style home. But this one had been particularly brutal. The year before, I’d finally let down my protective barrier, the one that kept me from dating in any serious way since Dolan had been born, and just after the new year, we’d found out together that my choice had been, to put it mildly, a bad one. Both Dolan and I had been hurt, he, in his innocence and longing for a nuclear family, perhaps even more than I had. Right around the same time, we’d had one of those heating system disasters that Mainers live in fear of, the kind where pipes freeze, boilers crack, and you’re suddenly Googling to find out exactly what the penalties are for tapping into your retirement account. But we were getting through it, and I was conscious—as we shushed along together in happy tandem, whooping on the downhills and huffing together on the uphills—that every glide into the woods represented a journey back to our unit of two, to our motherand-son team. We were elated by the time we began the descent into Little Lyford, and as we saw the tiny village
2/6/18 1:56 PM
awaiting us, that joy only grew. There was a bunkhouse, a chalet-style dining hall, and then a row of small log cabins. Dolan rode a plastic toboggan all the way down the path to land just in front of our cabin, Wolf Star. It turned out to have been a favorite of a man named George Bliss, who spent the better part of 26 hunting seasons at Little Lyford in the first half of the 20th century. (AMC bought Little Lyford in 2003, when it was just beginning its major conservation and recreation effort, the Maine Woods Initiative, but for most of the century, it was a private sporting camp.) We rushed to try out the sauna, grabbing the last open time slot before a simple but delicious dinner, and were in bed, warm and cozy in front of the woodstove in Wolf Star, before 9 p.m. No phones, no iPads, nothing but books and the dog curled up at our feet and a tired, fulfilled contentment. We vowed to come back the next year, even after we skied out the next day in conditions that teetered on dangerous: 8 degrees, with winds gusting to 30 mph. We took with us the memories of how our water bottles froze in our packs. How we didn’t stop to eat our lunches at all because it was too cold. How we conquered a twisty, hilly route back that was geared toward expert Nordic skiers. And we’ve kept that vow. There was the year we skied out in the rain, feeling like the snow might vanish into puddles under our feet before we got to the car, the year we skied for nearly an hour in the dark, arriving just as the friendly staff put dinner on the table. What new memories will await us this year? I know only these things: At the end will be the big hill, and we will have to go up it, steadily, together, knowing we can do it. CARES® Airplane Safety Harness Kids Fly Safe with CARES® Airplane Safety Harness. The only FAA approved harness-type child restraint approved for taxi, takeoff, turbulence, and landing. It’s perfect for toddlers old enough to sit alone, but too small for the seatbelt. Since the child is comfortably secured, they will more likely stay seated and can’t kick the seat in front of them. CARES Airplane Safety Harness is portable, lightweight, and simple to install.

One Question
Bellamy Young,
has a role ever taught you something about yourself?
I will miss everything about playing Mellie Grant [when Scandal ends after this season]. To sit on set in the Oval Office and know she achieved her dream of becoming president—I mean, she’s a fictional character, but I’m so proud of her. Over seven years, she has taught me so much about not second-guessing yourself and having courage in your convictions. I am pathologically nonconfrontational, so to spend 17 hours a day in that sort of “my way or the highway” mindset has been incredibly empowering.
