With so many dating options out there, why did you choose It's Just Lunch?
D: I travel a lot for work, so I’d read about It’s Just Lunch in airline magazines, and then I ran into a friend who was attending the wedding of an attorney in town who’d met her husband through IJL – the fact that those two events happened so close together, I thought I should call them. At the end of my work day I didn’t want to come home and go look at profiles online. I felt like it was a waste of my time. M: I had gotten a divorce and then did online dating for a while before joining IJL. I joined mainly because it’s a lot of work to do the online thing. You have to keep up on it. You never really know who you’re going to meet. IJL was just a lot easier. They found people for me based on what I was looking for and I just had to show up. You don’t have to do much work. What would you tell a friend who was apprehensive about investing the money on IJL?
M: I’d ask, “Are you looking for a relationship or not?” With online dating you never know who’s on the other side of the line. IJL had better quality people who were interesting to me. It truly was an experience that was tailored for me. Describe your first meeting with an IJL matchmaker?
D: She asked me questions about
myself, what I like to do, what I want in a relationship, whether I’d marry someone who already had kids, how important religion is, that kind of thing. It
would take much longer to find out someone else’s answers to those questions through online dating. This was black and white.
Tell us about your first date with one another.
D: I never went on lunch dates because I was always busy at work so I met Michael after work at a downtown restaurant. The conversation just flowed. I was attracted to him from the start. I remember it turned into dinner.

One of the things that I’ve learned as I’ve grown older is that when it comes to physical fitness, one of the most important areas you should seek to strengthen is your core muscle group. This might come easier or more naturally when you’re younger, but in my seventh decade, I can appreciate how a strong set of core muscles stabilizes the entire body—and most activities depend on it. The same is true for a Company—and especially for 46-year-old Southwest Airlines. We’re not over-the-hill by any means, but it’s more important than ever before for us to strengthen and grow

Community Outreach CAFFEINE BOOST
From Farm to Plane and Back Again
Southwest and Community Coffee help open schools in coffee-farming communities. Tucked away in the mountainous region of Chiapas, Mexico, the remote villages of Tierra y Libertad and Unión Buenavista grow some of the coffee used by our onboard partner, Community Coffee. The area’s treacherous terrain makes it difficult to reach, especially during the months of heavy rainfall. This can prevent teachers from accessing the community and limit the educational resources available to the coffee farmers and their families. In response to this challenge, Southwest and Community Coffee have committed to making a donation to the ECOM Foundation for every pound of coffee served onboard our nearly 4,000 daily flights. These donations will help
the ECOM Foundation fund satellite schools in these remote areas. This past fall, schools in these two villages opened, giving the community access to online curriculum through satellite internet that provides access to secondary education as well as agricultural, technological, and academic training for all community members. Each classroom is equipped with computers and a local community member to facilitate the online classes. The classroom space has staggered scheduling for maximum usage, so the facilities can impact up to 2,400 individuals and families. Coffee is the primary industry in these close-knit communities, and we want to do our part to ensure their livelihood is sustainable by equipping community members with educational resources in their own backyard. As many stories do, this one started with the promise of a once-in-a-lifetime barbecue recipe. My wife and I were having friends over, and I wanted to make an appetizer that involved a brand of Taiwanese barbecue sauce. We’d been unable to find it near our home in Burbank, but when I was in Phoenix for work, I tracked it down at the Chinese Cultural Center. I was traveling light, but the bottles meant I’d have to check a computer satchel. When I landed in Burbank and looked

Customer service agent Michael Parsi diagnosed the problem: A different Dave Hanson had flown out of Phoenix at the same time I had, but he was going to the other side of the country, and the sauce had gone with him! I told Michael I’d hoped to serve it the next night and described the recipe. Michael looked like a normal guy, but the fact that a next-level culinary experience was at stake seemed to transform him into a baggage-tracking superhero. The sauce would reach its destination too late to return that night, but he fasttracked it on a flight the next morning at 6:30 a.m (a time barbecue sauce is rarely out and about) to be delivered by early afternoon! Sure enough, I was reunited with our barbecue sauce by mid-day (tears were shed). Dinner was served, and our friends loved the dish. Thank you for saving the party! —David Hanson

Allington—were amazingly hospitable. Then, they made our experience unforgettable! They announced that we were getting married over the loudspeaker and made me a bouquet out of a Southwest coffee cup, coffee stirrers, and paper, as well as a crown and train out of straws and toilet paper. It was the most adorable and touching gesture. They played “Going to the Chapel” over the loudspeaker, made me “walk the aisle” to my now-husband, and performed a “wedding” at 38,000 feet. About three-and-a-half years ago, my beautiful wife, Katie, gave birth to our equally beautiful daughter, Jillian. It was every bit as wonderful and scary as it could be. She was a little early, but I was able to fly Katie’s mom out to be with us thanks to my Rapid Rewards points. About six weeks after Jillian’s arrival, Katie was diagnosed with
multiple breast cancer tumors (she was 29 years old). Life flipped upside down. The next morning, my points had Katie’s mom on another plane to stay with us. Over the next two years, Katie went through a number of surgeries, chemo, radiation, and countless appointments. Throughout that time, we were blessed in many ways by family and friends. I have no adequate words to express how much it meant to us to have the support of so many people. I am happy to report that both Katie and Jillian are doing perfectly well. Recently, I arrived in Milwaukee just past midnight after a week away on
business. I got to my car, looked for the keys that I had packed in my luggage earlier that week, and found they were no longer there. (Lesson learned: Always put your keys in a carryon.) I walked back to the baggage claim and asked whether things sometimes fall out when your luggage is searched by TSA. Customer service agent Ann Greco said yes, and gave me instructions on what to do and how to contact TSA. She then asked if I could call anyone to come get me. I explained that I had three small children at home with my husband and didn’t want to wake them up. I would take a cab and come back in the morning for my car. Ann asked me where I lived, and then said she didn’t live far and would be happy to take me home. I didn’t want to burden her, especially at that hour of the night, but she insisted. I am so grateful for her kindness. She not only took the time to explain to me how to get my keys back (which I have), but she also asked about the situation and went above and beyond. —Jacqueline Bartelak

the same spirit. To them, books are not just homework or an education. They’re a comfort. So, snug in our tent, I began to read. Suddenly I felt his head clunk onto my chest. He had grown a lot in the years since The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, but he was my little boy again. No one writes better about the ceremony of bedtime reading than Michael Cannell. On page 76, he describes a different, moving occasion in which the roles get reversed. Michael has written some of the best bedtime adult reading I’ve come across lately, a true-life crime page-turner titled Incendiary (out in April). Tuck yourself in and get comfortably lost in our most civilized, never-dying tradition.

Years ago, my son George decided he would show up for his first year in college by walking 110 rugged miles from our house in New Hampshire to Middlebury, Vermont, a six-day route that traveled stretches of the Appalachian and Long Trail. I asked to join him. George carried a heavier pack with most of the supplies, but he forgot one critical piece of gear. We both realized its absence as we lay in our tent the first night. I switched on my headlamp and began reading a tattered paperback copy of Herman Melville’s wild tropical novel Typee. George reached over and turned it so he could read too. “Hey,” I said. “Where’s your book?” “I forgot it.” I offered to read mine aloud, just as I did back when he and his sister, Dorothy Jr., were little, and just as my mother had done with my little brother and me a generation before. To this day, when I sit back in the evening with a good book, I can almost feel her warmth. My own grown children seem to have inherited

I could relate to “Superhero Worship” [December 2016] by Ryan Jones. My 15-year-old son has taken a liking to hunting. I have zero interest in hunting, but I slog through the woods to have uninterrupted time with him in those cold shooting houses. The article reminded me never to take it for granted; those moments will become less common as he becomes more independent. It also made me think of my father. He graduated from West Point and served 28 years. I attended the Army–Navy football game with him in December. He wondered if, at 73, he would ever see Army win again. Seeing his eyes get glossy as the cadets stormed the field is something I will never forget. Those sports moments are special and rare. PRECIOUS TIME
I’ve never been moved to write a note to an author whose work I’ve read, but I had to reach out to Michael Graff after reading “The Letter” [December 2016]. I lost my mom to leukemia when I was a kid, and my wife has MS (and frequently complains
of the tingling in the toes). I’m a soldier, facing my third deployment, and I’m on my way to see my family before my trip across the Pacific. Who are you calling birdbrained? After using wheat treats to train four pigeons to peck a touchscreen, University of Otago researchers taught their pupils to discriminate between fourletter words and non-words. When gibberish appeared on screen, the birds pecked a symbol; when real words were displayed, they tapped those instead. “We found that pigeons can code the statistical properties that define words,” lead author Damian Scarf says. This ability—orthographic processing—helped the birds build vocabularies ranging from 26–58 words. They were then introduced to words they hadn’t seen before. The results? “They also responded correctly,” Scarf says. Rare birds, indeed.

Walking under the trees and into the tiny cottage that houses Big Bar in Los Angeles, one thing is immediately evident: You’ll probably be sitting outside. When Cari Hah became bar manager there in late 2015, she set about creating a light, refreshing cocktail for just that purpose. She took the biting effervescence of a Moscow Mule and combined it with warm flavors normally reserved for mulled wine. The result is a drink made of winter, but for all seasons. And the name? It’s a pat on the back—Sunnie is Cari’s middle name.
Don’t worry, it’s a yearround drink.
MAKE IT ↑ Add 1½ ounces Deep Eddy Vodka, ¾ ounce cranberrypomegranate-cinnamon syrup*, and ¾ ounce lime juice to a shaker. Add ice and shake until cold. Strain into a double Old Fashioned glass and fill with ice. Top with 2–3 ounces of East Imperial ginger beer, leaving about an inch of beer space. Top with ginger foam** and garnish with mint and pomegranate arils. 44 southwest march 2017

Add equal parts superfine sugar (if you have a total of 5 cups juice, add 5 cups sugar); also add 10 crushed-up cinnamon sticks. Bring mixture to a boil, and then turn off heat. Once cool, strain the cinnamon. **Combine 6 ounces ginger syrup—made with equal parts fresh ginger juice and superfine sugar—with 2 egg whites in an iSi canister. Charge; keep cold until use.

In 1933, Spanish immigrant Francisco Iriarte noticed a gap in the Mexico City food market: churros. The fried dessert was popular in his home village of Elizondo, delivered town to town by a Moorish vendor. In an effort to replicate that memory, Iriarte opened a churro stand in the city’s main square, and named it El Moro after his hometown churrero. To prevent the loss of endangered alphabets all over the world, I turned to ancient tools: my hands. / BY TIM BROOKES
I
n the early 19th century, in an astounding act of persistence, imagination, and courage, a Cherokee named Sequoyah invented a written version of his people’s language. The Cherokee became the first American Indian nation to adopt their own script, and they went from nonliterate to literate in a single decade. Soon, a variety of publications, including Bibles, prayer books, and a newspaper were printed in Cherokee by a missionary named Samuel Worcester. But just as this extraordinary transformation was taking place, the 1830 Indian Removal Act was passed. The Cherokee were driven from their homelands in Georgia and the Carolinas. Their printing press was seized, and the Cherokee type was destroyed. Their only path to literacy was

through white schools, where speaking their mother tongue was often forbidden. But Sequoyah’s syllabary survived in those Bibles and prayer books, and at the end of the 20th century, a revival of the Cherokee language began. Today, Sequoyah’s invention still speaks so strongly to the traditional identity of the Cherokee that their artwork often includes the characters he created. In Tahlequah, Oklahoma, the site of the Cherokee Nation headquarters, the high school is named after him. The downtown post office is inscribed in both English and Cherokee. Wheelchair access and tobacco-free signs around the old courthouse are also in both languages, and the front window of the Bank of America features a message in Cherokee. Shopping lists, memos, histories, even fiction and spiritual texts: The sheer act of writing carries the injunction, This is important. The busier we are, and the more we have on our minds, the more likely we are to forget, so the more important writing becomes. Is it
I launched the Endangered Alphabets Project, and I started documenting these losses in a medium more permanent than paper or the fleeting pixel. Learning about woodwork as I went, I carved Balinese and Javanese from Indonesia; Tifinagh from North Africa and Bassa Vah from West Africa; Lanna from Thailand and the traditional Mongolian script called bichig. First by emailing scholars and later through
To my astonishment, I started getting emails from the other side of the planet with tiny miracles of exotic text. any surprise, then, that humans are writing more now—emails, texts, Facebook posts—than at any other time in history? None of this had occurred to me before 2009. At the time, I was a freelance writer trying to support a family. In the previous two decades, I had penned a dozen books, around 100 magazine articles, and some 500 newspaper articles. I was prolific, but I was a mess—frantic, scattered, confused of purpose. And then, more or less on a whim, I began carving endangered alphabets. I had stumbled across a website, omniglot.com, that catalogs the world’s written languages. Despite being a well-traveled guy, I’d never heard of most of them. Many of these written forms were beautiful, even astonishing. And an alarming percentage, perhaps a third, were on the verge of extinction: no longer taught in schools, no longer used for official purposes, and in some cases used only by priests. What do we lose when a written language dies? And what happens when some daft Englishman living in Vermont decides to buck the global trend and write slowly, using tools a thousand years old?

Facebook, I gradually developed a network of contacts. To my astonishment, I started getting emails from the other side of the planet with tiny miracles of exotic text to enlarge, transfer with carbon paper, and gouge into maple, cherry, walnut, and sapele. IN 2012 I RECEIVED AN EMAIL from Maung Nyeu, a graduate student at Harvard. A member of the Marma, an ethnic group from the Chittagong Hill Tracts of Bangladesh, he had been stunned to discover photos of my carvings. We met in Cambridge, and he told me of his journey from the remote upland region of his birth to Harvard, via degrees at the University of Hawaii and the University of Southern California. He had begun developing schools in the Hill Tracts where indigenous children could be educated in their own languages. Public education in Bangladesh takes place, by law, in Bangla, the official national language. For many of the children in the Hill Tracts, Bangla is not even their second language. Unsurprisingly, the results are dismal: Less than two percent of the region’s children

finish their schooling. Many of these children have never even seen their own languages in writing. I wanted to give them a sense that their language and culture were dignified and worthy of respect. So at Maung’s request, I carved signage in Mro, Marma, and Chakma to display outside these schools. My work, I found, was shifting from documentation to activism, prompting an increased sense of urgency. Maung and I recruited a team to create classroom materials in the endangered languages and alphabets of the Hill Tracts. We published alphabet wall charts, rubber letter stamps, writing journals, the first coloring books to be seen in the Chittagong Hill Tracts, and children’s readers based on regional folk tales. More than 700 indigenous children have now been admitted to three schools, where they are doing what we hope children do the world over: learning their alphabets. When a culture loses its own alphabet, it also loses everything written in that alphabet—and everything that alphabet stands for. Minority cultures are often agricultural, which means they have a deep knowledge of plants and their medicinal properties. In many cultures that knowledge is written only in their own language. The same goes for spiritual writings, legal documents, and personal letters. As soon as the traditional script is no longer taught, in as little as two generations, that wisdom and experience is unintelligible—not only to them, but to the world. But the loss goes subtler and deeper. Every culture’s writing has developed alongside its tools, their sense of who they are, and what they believe in. It had never occurred to ask myself why English letters look the way they do until I started carving letters that looked utterly different. Take the English “E” and the “E” of the Cham people of Vietnam. Our

an artifice, one that required tools and skill to execute properly. It embodied the ideal forms of Euclid—straight lines, parallel lines, right angles, symmetry—that you can’t actually write by hand. It was chosen to embody the qualities of an empire: balance, durability, law and order. The Cham E, on the other hand, has no truck with straight lines or symmetry. Instead, it’s all about movement and curve—the virtues of the human wrist. AFTER WORKING ON THE alphabets for a year or two, I started to realize that the enterprise was changing me. I’ve published about a million words in my lifetime, but now I might spend all evening working on one. I still spend many of my daylight hours answering hundreds of emails, but in the evening, I sit down with a piece of wood that compels me to slow down. There’s no such thing as a perfect sentence, but there is such a thing as a perfect curve, and if you make the slightest mistake, you notice. The project has also revealed interesting things about error. The

digital world allows us to make mistakes at the speed of light, and correct them just as quickly. Working in wood makes it difficult, sometimes even impossible, to correct mistakes. And those mistakes are always the result of haste: ripping off the template sheet without noticing you’ve missed an accent mark or even a
When a culture loses its alphabet, it also loses everything written in that alphabet. whole word; rounding a corner at excessive speed; wanting to get to work quickly and not preparing the wood properly, so when you apply the finish, disfigured lines left by the planer rise out of the grain. Which is what the whole project is about, really: making sure nothing important is lost in the name of convenience or haste. Carving endangered alphabets forces me to pay attention, and it’s only when you pay attention that you truly understand value— and beauty. “Looky khan” needed to tell people about the first time he heard Valerie June’s voice. He had to thank her. ¶ So on the YouTube page for “Somebody to Love,” the bluegrass-inflected lullaby from Valerie’s 2013 album Pushin’ Against a Stone, looky khan tells the story. He was in the car with his dad, who has Alzheimer’s and dementia, and his dad was getting disgruntled with the long journey home. When this song came warbling through the radio, looky khan’s dad suddenly fell silent to “appreciate her angelic voice,” he wrote.
A magical three minutes, but no telling if his dad would recall them. One night later on, they were out on the veranda together, and looky khan’s dad turned to him and asked if he could put “that song” on. Looky khan knew precisely the one. They sat there listening with the rain crashing down, and it was so sublime that looky khan says he’ll remember that moment for as long as he lives. People tend to remember their first encounter with Valerie’s voice. They may disagree on what it sounds like (at turns an old man or a young girl, depending on the song) or even the genre it represents (blues, bluegrass, folk, country, gospel, rock). Still, there’s a striking unanimity around the use of terms like “timelessness” or “soulfulness” to describe it—essentially, its transcendence of age and culture and myriad other categories we invent to sequester ourselves. Even in the bowels of comments sections, which often skew toward our less virtuous traits, there is an overwhelming consensus. When I speak to her in early January, she’s a few days from embarking on the European leg of her tour for her new album, The Order of Time. Luggage is sprawled across her Brooklyn apartment, and she’s just pulled some thighs and legs from the freezer to make chicken soup—prepping for the tour involves restoring her voice. “I went to the store and I got some awesome organic ginger and carrots,” she tells me. “And I’m gonna drink a lot of awesome herbal teas—dandelion, burdock root. And I’m gonna take my bath, because I do a lot of that. That’s for rejuvenation.” The Order of Time is the 35-year-old’s fifth album, though the first three were self-released. Her last album, Pushin’ Against a Stone, was co-produced by The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach, and the new record features backup vocals by the likes of Norah Jones. Her relative anonymity won’t last long. But it’s unlikely to alter her approach, either. Her music is deeply rooted in family traditions: Her father and brothers also sang backup on one of the tracks.

Take us back to your childhood. How’d you get your start? “I grew up in Jackson, Tennessee, and I was around a lot of people who had dreams. They showed me how to live each day with hope and inspiration. My father was promoting music, so that inspired me. He had a construction company too, which is how he made most of his money. I loved it when he let me ride with him in the dump truck. He loved music so he always had the radio playing. Whitney Houston’s ‘I Wanna Dance with Somebody’ would come on, and I would get up and sing at the top of my lungs.”
came from, but I’ve also always loved what other cultures are doing musically. I’ve always been curious about it. Maybe moving and going to a different church and being around a totally different musical culture was the thing that inspired that first. But I also had a babysitter who was a black woman with a big afro, and she wanted to write country songs in a time when Charley Pride was the only African American country music singer. That was inspiring too. I’m constantly being more inspired by what moves me versus what the world thinks I’m supposed to write because of the way I look. [Laughs.]”
Your voice transforms considerably depending on the song. How did that come about? “We went to church three times a week. It was Church of Christ, so there wasn’t a choir. We all joined our voices, and there were no real instructions. It was just get in where you could—so 500 people opening the songbook and giving it a go. It was one of the most beautiful things, because I would hear some people that could really throw it out there, who sounded like professionals, and other people who had rough voices or soft voices. I learned so much about singing, being around people with different types of voices. And I feel like anybody can sing. You just have to find your voice.”
Critics have struggled to define your music. There’s something about your songs that feels universal. Perhaps that’s because you’re pulling from so many different traditions and pieces of your own biography. I wonder whether people are drawn to you because you defy these categories? “I reckon they are. The most important thing for us creators is to shine, and to shine unapologetically. I feel like when I do that, people respond. That’s me being my truest self, me being who I came here to be. That is our job as human beings. Everybody has a reason why they came and a gift, and you have to live up to that highest potential of what you came here to do.”

And your experiences in different churches influenced you in different ways? “When I first started singing, it was more from the lower part of my abdomen because we went to a black church and that’s how they sang. As I got older, like 10 or 11, we moved and so we went to a predominantly white church. That’s where the singing was from the head, so I learned to sing from a different place. We all have so many different voices: the morning voice, the afternoon voice, the evening voice. It’s great when my voice is fully warm and I’m ready to sing, but isn’t there something beautiful about the raspy times and the squeaky times? Why can’t it just be something that gives you pure raw emotion and moves you, and it’s not like every single note is perfection? It’s perfectly imperfect.” Do you think your wide-ranging background is what gave rise to the variety in your songs? “I think it definitely did. I’ve always loved where I

Your new album is built around notions of time. Why is that theme so central to your work? “All of the beauty around us that we’re excited to see in the world, those things happened in very small steps, with little things happening every day. There’s such beauty to that. Time is the ruler of everything. It’s the rhythm of the earth. For people trying to manifest a dream, you have to work with time. It’s about tending the garden and being like, ‘OK, if I don’t get there, at least I’m sitting in this garden, and I’m trying. I’m still trying.’”
a young girl’s voice. Sometimes it starts as a hum, almost like baby talk, then it starts to morph into words, and then I start singing along with what I’m hearing. I hear other voices coming in beside it, like harmonies and layers. It’s like a chorus. It’s way too much, so I have to write it down and carve out what’s essential and important. Maybe one of the voices should be a keyboard or a guitar. That’s where I’m becoming part of the process. It’s a funny thing to explain to people. For many years, I wouldn’t talk about it.” You were doing a lot of tough jobs coming up, trying to make this work. How has that informed your approach? “It makes me so grateful for where I am, to be living my dream as a musician, but the truest thing for me is more about understanding the journey. When I was cleaning houses, waiting tables, and washing dogs, I was looking at it like, you know, it would be great to be a singer, but the whole act of becoming who I am as an artist is me working in those worlds first. That’s the magic of it all.”
You recently lost your father. Did that change the way you think about the themes of this album? “It certainly brought it home. When my father passed in November, they called me and said, ‘Hey, he’s not gonna make it. You can fly in and go to the hospital and hope he’s there when you get there.’ All my brothers and sisters, all five of ’em, were there. We sang around him for two hours, until his spirit left. We just held hands and we sang. We sang hymns and spirituals, but also songs that we made up. He had dementia and Alzheimer’s. They say that people who have that sometimes have certain things from their past that they remember musically, and they like to hear those songs again and again. That proved true for him.” Ultimately, what do you aspire to? What’s your ambition? “I would love to look out at my crowds and see all ages and all colors, speaking all languages. What an awesome thing to have a show where you’re gonna bring together people who normally would not be in the same room. They’re all enjoying something together, and their worries slip away for a while. If we’re moving from 30 minutes of happiness here to 30 minutes of happiness there, and we’re all getting along in a beautiful way, then what a changed world, right?” march 2017 southwest 69

mr. grass and i have just spent a few hours on his porch talking about the factual accuracy of the movie Sully and eating backyard peaches and watching rabbits thump thump across the lawn and taking in the warming Colorado morning, so I figure it’s probably time to get out of his hair. We walk through his suburban Denver home and out onto the driveway, where he stops about 10 feet past the front of the garage, a place he’s stopped hundreds if not thousands of times before. “The sun’s gonna be a little bright in our eyes,” Mr. Grass says, wheeling around in his bare feet. We squint and look up at the small balcony off his master bedroom, fixing our eyes on the applesized camera tacked to the eave overhead. “You gotta freeze because it needs to go for about two seconds.” We both reflexively give the camera a thumbsup, hold the pose, and smile.
THIS LOVE
story begins as most do, with a man searching the internet for a choppy video of a garbage truck: The truck lifts a trash can, and then unceremoniously thrashes that can up and down, spewing trash across a quiet street. I can’t remember exactly why I was searching for that video—it was technically the GIF version I was looking for—but it was likely for use in a witty email, something I admittedly spend way too much time on and am way too proud of. When the Google Images page loaded, the GIF appeared: top left, option one. I patted myself on the back for my superior Googling skills—“garbage+truck+GIF”—and was ready to X out the window when I spotted another image of interest: blue and white garbage truck, lush lawn, suburban. Expecting to add a new arrow to my quiver of trash-chucking GIFs, I was instead met with a garbage truck lifting two trash cans one by one, and
then gently returning them to the ground. Surely this must be a mistake, I thought. I watched the GIF over and over, waiting for something else to happen. It did not. What I did see, though, was a flicking time stamp in the corner—this trash was picked up and not thrown at 10:46 a.m. on June 20, 2007—and the website’s URL, Watching-Grass-Grow.com. Curious enough to spend a few more minutes down this rabbit hole, I pulled up the site. The Rocky theme song blared. A weather report sat atop an all-green, rudimentary web page. My cursor became a scrolling red lawnmower. And I, for the first time, stole a look at Mr. Grass’ front lawn. A poured concrete driveway runs down the right side of the frame, with a few coniferous trees poking into the screen. A Volkswagen-sized

bush occupies the southwest quadrant, sitting at the top of a yard that slopes down to the street. The top edge is populated with the beginnings of neighbors’ yards. As I moved my cursor over the image, the words “grass webcam” appeared. According to a counter in the upper right, 37 other souls were staring at the lawn with me. Just as I began to come to terms with what I was watching, a tan Chevy Avalanche blipped onto the screen. I jumped, and maybe yelped. (I yelped.) I started winding my way through the tip of the site’s 11,000-plus comments. Highlight of my day: Mr. Grass getting the newspaper newspaper, wrote Sr. Grass, from North Platte, Nebraska. The UPS van just drove by!!! a Branson, Missouri, viewer announced. This is my favourite website, said Lucy, from Serbia. Occasionally, the man behind the curtain, Mr. Grass, would respond, like when a viewer complained about the yellowing of the
lawn. It will perk back up when the weather gets cooler and we get some rain, Mr. Grass said. I scanned the dozens of screengrabbed highlights from over the years: mundane shots of him fertilizing the grass, elaborate Christmas and Halloween displays, sun-soaked carwashes. The years flitted by. Grass crinkles and reemerges; his neighbor gets a new mailbox. In one, from Father’s Day 2004, Mr. Grass is trimming the lawn, with his two early elementary-school age sons pushing toy mowers behind him. After the webcam, it’s the first image any viewer sees. It’s sweet. I pulled the tab into its own window and left it running while I went back to work trying to write pithy emails. But I couldn’t stop looking at the feed. It updated every two seconds or so; sometimes whole minutes would pass where nothing would happen. I’d refresh the page, assuming it was stuck. Again: nothing. It was like a real time march 2017 southwest 73

Magic Eye poster, only one where you stare at it for 10 minutes before you realize it’s not, in fact, even a Magic Eye poster. At the end of the day I went home, but something stopped me from closing out the window. The next day I reloaded the screen. Same thing the third day. Eventually, I just kept it open all the time. I’d pull it up when I wanted to zone out for a few minutes and watch this shamrock-green lawn. I started evangelizing to friends and family; no one found it nearly as interesting. So I’d sit at work with 33 or 27 or 52 strangers, and we’d watch in silence as the mail was delivered, or a bird landed on a signpost, or the residual morning dew evaporated as the sun rose and filled the driveway. A few months earlier, I’d learned that my wife was pregnant with our first child. We dubbed the mystery baby “TBD,” and I immediately set out upon an investigation into how much takeout I’d need to stop eating to afford day care. (The answer: all of it, plus I would probably need to stop buying groceries. We’ll live off the land, I thought.) We’d always wanted children. Chronologically, I was ready. Emotionally, I was swallowing anxiety in gulps. Sometimes I’d sit at my desk, mute the Rocky theme, and stare at Mr. Grass’ lawn, unsure if I wanted something to happen or not. By nature I am not an anxious person, but this somehow felt like self-medication. I’d glance down at the Father’s Day photo, all three of them suspended in a perfect line, three pairs of Velcro shoes sinking into the high grass. I wondered who they were and what they were doing now, 12 years later. They seem happy, I’d think to myself. I’d put my computer to sleep, and head for home.
IT’S MID-SEPTEMBER
when I pull up to the yard I’ve been monitoring for months. Late spring green has given way to a summer mustard, but the chlorophyll is fighting the good fight once again. (I brushed up on my grass lingo before the trip, unsure of Mr. Grass’ botanical knowledge.) The first thing I notice: The yard I’ve been staring at is much bigger than I anticipated. Onscreen, it’s 6 inches by 4 inches. In reality, if you took out the slope you could host a pretty decent touch football game on it. Mr. Grass is leaning on his balcony, wiping the remnants of the previous day’s hailstorm off the webcam. Alek Komarnitsky is Suburban Dad defined: early 50s, brown hair, a decade-old, unbuttoned, royal-blue polo, khaki shorts. He is shoeless. I walk up the driveway and past the lawn, resisting the urge to lean down and pluck a blade. Being here feels at once familiar and disorienting.

Mr. Grass invites me in, and we head to the back porch. He tells me he’s told no one that I’m coming—not Mrs. Grass, neither of the two teenage Grasses. I ponder this for a second before Mr. Grass says scratch that, he told the garbage man, Connor. Yesterday, Connor stopped by the house and rang the doorbell to ask if Alek was indeed Mr. Grass. Connor’s 8-year-old daughter had learned about Watching Grass Grow from a YouTube show, and he realized he’d been picking up Mr. Grass’ trash for the past two years. I’m skeptical of the story—it sounds like a bad movie plotline about people’s lives intersecting at serendipitous times—but when I check the site later, there Connor is, screengrabbed by Mr. Grass, giving a thumbs-up to the camera from the front seat of the truck. Mr. Grass is a former systems administrator for a variety of tech companies and, back in 1987,
was a founding member of the Rocky Mountain Internet User Group. His 1992 MBA thesis was titled “The Internet: The Information Superhighway of the 21st Century.” He was in the Air Force, and then got a job in New Mexico at Sandia National Laboratories. He first put up his webcam in 2002 so that he could monitor his drought-scourged turf while on vacation. He began leaving it up for Halloween and Christmas, which led to increasingly fantastical holiday displays. Eventually he rigged his whole 25,000-light system onto modules that let viewers around the world control them (along with his ginormous inflatable Santa). One day in 2005 he stopped taking the camera down between Halloween and Christmas, and Watching Grass Grow was born. Since then he’s also attempted a slew of spinoffs: the Concrete Cam, which was dedicated CONTINUED ON PAGE 81

prospective parents, an administrator at a Waldorf school explained that its early childhood curriculum emphasizes the value of spirit and imagination. Nothing wrong with reading aloud, he said, but children engage more fully with tales drawn from your own wits. I tested the Waldorf theory that night by inventing Cricket, a precocious little girl who lives in a grand apartment overlooking Central Park with a grizzled caretaker, Ling Ling, and their kindhearted dog, Buddy. Cricket was part Eloise, part Katniss Everdeen. I knew the Waldorf theory had panned out when Evie propped herself up in bed to query me. What befell Cricket’s parents? Was Ling Ling wicked or warmhearted? Did Cricket walk Buddy in Central Park by herself? The Cricket stories made such an impression that Evie began calling her younger sister Cricket months before she was born. As a teenager Ann still goes
hen my daughter Evie was small, I told her a series of bedtime stories. Seated in the half-light of her room, I devised nightly updates on Ten Town, where every citizen is 10 years old, and on the birdbrained doings of Buckwheat, the silliest donkey in the world. Evie binge-listened in her compact built-in bed, bath-scented and pajama-soft. Her curls fanned out on a white cotton pillow like a cinnamon halo. The nightly installments went on for years, like sitcoms in syndication. On nights when I came home after beers with friends, the plotlines detoured, digressed, and dipsy-doodled. On a few evenings, I fell half asleep and, chin to chest, unknowingly blended the stories with the fantastical events of my dreams. The stories began as an experiment. In 2002, when Evie was 3, we toured preschools. During an information session for

by Cricket, like it or not. (Oddly enough, the flesh-and-blood Cricket resembles the fictional version—a gimlet-eyed New York girl with deadpan banter and a sizzling streak of independence.) The Cricket chronicles, and all the ensuing stories, halted mid-episode when Evie’s fluttering eyelids lowered by increments and her soft exhales assumed the steady rhythm of sleep. She sometimes raised a forefinger, indicating that she was still listening with eyes closed. But the finger never stayed aloft for long. It felt like a reprieve when my audience of one fell asleep for good. I rarely knew how to bring the plots to tidy resolution. Storytelling, like parenting, requires constant improvisation. Instinct is the only rudder. With Evie asleep I would stagger into the kitchen looking for dinner, though over time I developed the habit of lingering in the dark, listening to the muffled complaints of taxi horns and the wheeze of city buses lumbering across Columbus Avenue. No doubt I paused out of exhaustion. I was spending long days toiling in a newspaper newsroom. I can see now that I also stayed for a measure of solace and satisfaction. Story hour was the moment of the day when I felt most present; I was reluctant to break the spell. I had brought to life and set in motion characters drawn from roommates, workmates, aunts, uncles, and other family members. The cast had its own gravitational pull. They softened the coarse edges of everyday life. Stories, I had come to understand, are the balm of the soul. My repertoire of stories would compete for dominance, like TV shows vying for prime time. For a period they gave way altogether to My Father’s Dragon, a chapter book about a boy, Elmer Elevator, who runs away from home to rescue a baby dragon enslaved on faraway Wild Island. The lions, monkeys, and other mean-spirited island creatures had knotted a stout rope

tumor not long after the book arrived. I was on deadline at The New York Times when his email hit my inbox. The news shuddered me to the core, but it was not entirely unexpected. We had vacationed at a Yucatan beach with Petey and his family weeks earlier. He arrived in Mexico somber-faced and suffering a bad flu, or so he said. As the week wore on, his illness acquired an ominous gravity. Headaches drove him to sit in the shade with a towel draped over his head. He seemed detached, unreachable. In the wrenching months of deterioration before Petey fell into a coma, Evie could reliably make him smile. On my laptop I keep a photo of her in a tiny red felt nightgown sitting down to eat a plate of scrambled eggs. Petey leans in with mouth agape, as if to gobble the eggs before she can sink her fork in. I put her in bed with him, and they would poke each other and guffaw. She was, of course, unaware of the foreboding in the room. My father wrote a short eulogy for Petey’s memorial service. He is an old-fashioned gentleman of stoic bearing, but he was unable to read his words. And so I read them for him, standing in a soft rain on an island in the Potomac River before two hundred or so friends. The eulogy referred to Petey as “our gentle son.” He was gentle. Gentle but droll—like a sweet-tempered Monty Python comic. He was an ornithologist, an evolutionary biologist employed by the Smithsonian, but he possessed an unlikely rapport with children—a fairy dust. He didn’t come at kids all moony-faced and smirky. He let them gravitate to him, drawn by his quiet waggery. When a niece was homesick for her parents, we aunts and uncles in a shared beach house tried to comfort her with varying degrees of failure. Petey was the one who could lull her contentedly to sleep with his own bedtime stories told in his buttery baritone. When Evie and I reread My

Father’s Dragon after Petey’s death, I sensed that the young hero, Elmer Elevator, was a version of Petey—a boyish adventurer inexplicably gone from his household. Elmer departs on his rescue mission in the middle of the night with his father’s knapsack stuffed with 25 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. He leaves no parting word behind—no note, no goodbye. The book does not show his parents waking to find their son missing. Nor does it convey the terrible days of anguish that surely followed. Elmer’s own thoughts cast back to his home only once, and fleetingly, when he and Boris, the liberated dragon, stand stranded on a sandbar with the tide precariously rising above their ankles. An illogical backwater of my mind wondered if Petey might have sent the book to foretell of his own departure.

s evie advanced to lower school, the bedtime stories matured with her. Night by night we talked our way through the annals of boy detectives Mike and Mikey, who played rounds of after-school darts while waiting for the phone to ring with a new neighborhood case to solve, and the rival schools Phillips and Tisdale and the devilish pranks they inflicted on each other. If a story saddened, Evie stopped me as firmly as Martin Scorsese on a film set. I was instructed to retrace my steps and choose a cheerier account. She had become an editor, a critic. All the while Cricket listened from her trundle bed. Occasionally her high flutey voice would pipe up from the dark, declaring that she could not follow a story. So I created for her a set of simple vignettes about Bobby Bird, a pigeon that patrolled Central Park looking for Dougie the Dog, and about Cheese Whiz, a town where food talks back to diners—salad bar fixings sing a cappella and hot dogs converse in Brooklyn accents.

In 2008 we moved to a larger apartment where, for the first time, Evie and Cricket bedded down in their own rooms. The stories continued in Cricket’s room for a year or so, then petered out. I never told another story until three years ago when, on a pitchblack night in Tortola, our rental car slid precariously on a steep, pockmarked cliff road above the ocean. Once we safely reached our rental home, Evie asked for a story. I was pleased to oblige. Fifteen years have passed since Petey’s death. The copy of My Father’s Dragon bearing Petey’s inscription now sits in a stack of neglected books above Cricket’s desk. Last Christmas I sent a copy to 1-year-old Oscar, the grandson Petey never met, with a note gently hinting at its significance. Evie turns 18 this spring. We’ve long since stopped sharing evening stories. Like any busy teenager, her reading consists of biology textbooks, calculus problem sets, and, of course, the incessant inflow of texts. She leaves for college late August. I have a numbing awareness that I will soon confront an empty bedroom. In the long run-up to her departure, my mind goes back to Elmer’s bereft parents. We live in a wired-up culture that discusses every issue to exhaustion, but a child’s leave-taking is still a strangely private form of heartbreak. We all yearn to keep our loved ones safe; we wish to hold them close to our hearth, to arrange blankets about them as they drift to sleep. But faraway dragons call for rescue, they call for all of us. Evie must attend hers, as I attended mine. In the meantime, the capers of Ten Town and Mike and Mikey live on in my nocturnal imagination. to the pouring of his new deck; Watching Paint Dry, a self-explanatory, two-part series documenting the living room and exterior of the house; and the Bird Cam, which lasted two seasons, 2010 and 2011, when house finches built a nest inside the wreath on the front door. This last one was Mr. Grass’ favorite—the excitement is clear as his voice climbs. “It was freaking right ... I mean I couldn’t believe it.” He once loaned an extra camera to a friend, and the Custom Home Construction Cam launched soon after. A decade-plus out, Watching Grass Grow is the only one to survive. Mr. Grass talks for hours about everything from the cooking techniques of the Denver-based hamburger chain Smashburger to the Atlantic island of South Georgia, before eventually doling out some solid advice on lawn maintenance: “Basically the solution is you have to water the crap out of it.” I try to get philosophical with him. For the viewer, I theorize, the web cam is an opportunity to slink away from reality, to recess into whatever corner of our brain we want to relax in. For you, I say, it’s a real-time archive of your life. Mr. Grass pauses. He’s saved every image from almost the entire run of the lawn cam. They’re dumped on an external hard drive in his messy home office. “Being an old systems admin type, you ideally never throw away data,” he says. “Being an engineer, you want data to look at after the fact. And so that’s just ... I guess that’s a pattern of mine.” Then he launches into a story about a neighborhood kid who ripped out his driveway lights. A little baffled and no closer to understanding my obsession, I head back to my hotel. A few hours later, I’m picking our conversation over in my brain when I remember a toss-away line from a tangent about the movie Sully. We were talking about how it

compares to the real-life Miracle on the Hudson, when Sully Sullenberger landed a plane on the Hudson River in New York. The movie needed an arc, so it crafted a storyline out of the hearings that followed the landing. “Don’t manufacture the drama,” Mr. Grass said.

get back home to Dallas, I call up Javid Sadr. A psychology professor at the University of Lethbridge in Alberta, Canada, Javid teaches a class in celluloid psychology—the study of psychology in both filmmaking and film-viewing. This can go on for seconds or minutes. The viewer, Javid says, is left to watch with intention—you’re forced to fill in the blanks. (Or, if you choose, to leave them empty.) He contrasts this with the music
I toggle back to the whiteness of the webcam and think of my own daughter, who saw snowflakes for the first time last week. video for Korean pop star Psy’s “Gangnam Style,” the most popular video in YouTube history, with more than 2.7 billion views. In one scene, Psy meets a woman on a subway. The video flashes between the two commuters, faster and faster, until there are more than 10 cuts per second. By the end, the jumps are nearly unperceivable. These cuts—whether they’re in a Korean music video or the newest Transformers movie—are what we as viewers have grown to expect from our entertainment. Gone are the days when a wide shot of a mesa fills the screen before the beginning of every Western. There are exceptions, of course. And one of the major exceptions is Norwegian slow TV. If you’re unfamiliar with the concept, it’s fairly simple: Take cameras. Affix them to objects. Hit record. Broadcast. (This is an oversimplification, but not much of one.) The most famous example—the one you might’ve heard about from an NPR podcast—is 2009’s Bergensbanen, a seven-hour train journey from Bergen to Oslo, Norway. This was followed up in 2011 with Hurtigruten, a 134-hour broadcast of the MS Nordnorge’s
cruise from Bergen to Kirkenes, 250 miles north of the Arctic Circle. For each one, hundreds of thousands of Norwegians watched the plodding treks in real-time. (During one weekend of the MS Nordnorge route, 2.5 million people—roughly half of Norway’s population—tuned in. By comparison, 52 percent of Americans tuned into the 2016 Super Bowl.) The hours are interspersed with subject matter experts, historians, and interviews with passengers and crewmembers. But for the most part, it’s just the viewer and the camera pointed off the front of the train or ship. Bergensbanen caught the attention of Tim Prevett, a documentarian based in Manchester, England. While working on his master’s in documentary production, he kept finding himself drawn to non-narrative forms—not just a narrator standing in front of an old house, explaining why said old house is important. Tim shot his documentary thesis about slow TV (yes, a documentary about documentaries) and started The Slow TV Blog, which tracks similar programs in both Norway and around the world. (Last summer, eight of the Norwegian productions appeared on Netflix in the United States.) Tim compares these experiences to ambient music. We can focus exclusively on them, losing ourselves in the notes and the small details, or we can have them on in the background. “It allows the person to establish their own relationships in it,” Tim says. “Yes, what you watch will be mediated. But typically they’re longer shots and it’s not rapid fire. You can make your own stories.”

Mr. Grass wheels two trash cans down the driveway and sets them up along the curb. His son maneuvers the minivan and backs into the space, bumping the cans once, twice. As the lesson continues, Mr. Grass moves the bins closer and closer. Eventually his son parks without a hitch. Nice job. If he can parallel park the rest of the skills will come easily, writes Paul, from Wamego, Kansas. As the minivan pulls up the driveway and into the garage, Mr. Grass grabs the trash cans, stops, and gives the camera a thumbs-up. It’s hard to imagine this moment not making its way onto the home page, tucked next to the Father’s Day mowing picture or maybe after a springtime car wash. I toggle back to the whiteness of the webcam and think of my own daughter, who saw snowflakes for the first time last week. I think of a picture of her from that day, her wide eyes narrowed by the cold, squinting out of her fluffy snowsuit, suspicious. My phone is laden with these kinds of photos—her kicking in the bath, her suck sucking on my nose, her in tiny clothes with tinier arms tucked inside. Since her birth on Halloween, rarely a day has gone by that I haven’t taken one or six or 75 pictures of her. I spin through my album and land on a random snap and wonder how a human being can grow so much in so few weeks. I think of the possibilities of spring, and of the collective unconscious between me and Lucy from Serbia and Sr. Grass from North Platte, Nebraska, strangers staring silently at someone’s yard. It
started with the opening of Main Street’s Hyatt Regency in 1982, which established a downtown anchor that’s since seen a major renovation. The revival continued in the next two decades, including the Peace Center for the performing arts in 1990, restaurateur Carl Sobocinski’s 1997 opening of still-popular Soby’s New South Cuisine in a one-time shoe store, and the 2000 renovation of the historic Westin Poinsett. Other accommodations, attractions, shopping, and dining followed, filling long-vacant gaps. However, that was just the beginning of a flood of activity that’s best compared to the rush of water at the now-bustling Falls Park on the Reedy. The last 15-plus years have seen an explosion of new hotels (including a riverfront Embassy Suites, the chic Aloft, and a Home2 Suites, with more to come); attractions, like the 21-mile and growing Greenville Health System Swamp Rabbit Trail that winds through downtown to the acclaimed Greenville Zoo and the outdoorsy town of Travelers Rest; adventures, including segway tours with Greenville Glides; and restaurants like Sobocinski’s Table 301 Dining Group, which includes tasty downtown offerings. Check off your bucket list at the BMW Performance Driving School. By Brian Cook My heart races the minute I turn up the drive. I’ve come to the BMW Performance Driving School in Greer, South Carolina, for the highly anticipated, five-exercise Car Control program. The teaching pros here know their way around not only “the Ultimate Driving Machine,” but also what may be the ultimate classroom: some two miles of meandering blacktop, with varying widths, turns, and elevations that simulate various driving conditions—a dream outing for car lovers. Most of my day will be spent behind the wheel, yet there’s no underestimating the value of class time. All instructors at the Performance Driving School are BMW–certified, with backgrounds including experience in NASCAR, the Sports Car Club of America, and the International Motor Sports Association. As we head outside, it’s misting rain—perfect for car-control school, we’re told. Weaving my way between cones at speeds topping 30 mph, I hold back a bit at first but quickly gain confidence on the slalom course. Soon it’s time for the skid pad, where BMW’s Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) system can shine. DSC uses sensors that monitor wheel rotation, steering angle, lateral forces, and other conditions. It also helps keep the car on course, even if the tires aren’t gripping evenly.

The skid pad is a circle of slick, wet concrete that you drive around at increasing speed until you lose control. Then you steer your way back under control before sliding onto the rough asphalt surrounding the ring or into the grass beyond. It’s an unnerving routine, but after a few 360s, I manage to compensate fairly well through steering, very quickly, and not freaking out. Other exercises follow, such as the “lane change technique” (aka crash avoidance). Accelerating straight ahead to about 40 mph, we let off the gas at a designated spot, make a sharp, hard left turn—as if avoiding a stopped vehicle—an immediate right turn, then come to a stop. The takeaway for everyday driving: “Always leave yourself an out, someplace you can put your car in an emergency maneuver.” Our instructor wraps up our session with an invitation nobody refuses: to ride along as he takes a few laps in a twin-turbo, 10-cylinder, 560-horsepower BMW M5. A few minutes later as I step out of the car, I’m slightly dizzy but also grinning madly. My notion of a thrill ride has been spectacularly redefined. Last year, more than 400,000 people attended the inaugural Light City, and in 2017, the festival is back and bigger than before. With two added evenings of excitement, there’s no shortage of bright ideas.
You’ll have to cross a path in the water to reach the interior of “OVO,” created by OVO Collective.
When Light City illuminates Baltimore’s Inner Harbor and eight distinct neighborhoods from March 31–April 8, it won’t be the first time the city has been a beacon for light innovation. Its connections trace back to 1816, when it became the first U.S. city to introduce gas street lamps. Two hundred years later, the level of accomplishment is no less impressive. An electric nine-day festival, Light City features 23 light art installations, 35 concerts from local and international artists, more than 200 performances, and a series of conferences that focuses on social
change in different disciplines— from design to education. Their scale isn’t the only reason the 23 eye-catching installations are impressive. The works are as diverse as the artists who made them, with rich meanings that speak to everything from the relationship between nature and technology to the humanitarian crisis in Syria. The displays include “ARGO,” a 70-foot work that represents water’s influence, and “Impulse,” an interactive urban playground with 15 seesaws outfitted with LED lights and speakers. At Pier 5, attendees can view “Sueños,” a piece created by Balti-

performances by local groups like Peabody Preparatory Wind Orchestra and Bmore Than Dance. Although some concerts are scheduled at the Inner Harbor Amphitheater, pop-up performances are a common occurrence at the BGE Light Art Walk. A 1.5-mile stretch along the Inner Harbor, the Art Walk features interactive displays, maker tents, and local food. At its eastern end, you’ll find Baltimore’s bustling Harbor East neighborhood, which will be illuminated during the festival. With fine dining, luxe accommodations, and shopping options that include Under Armour’s flagship store, the mixed-use district is a nod to modern “New Baltimore.” For families, Mini Light City is a must-see. more–based artist Edgar Reyes to showcase the Latino community’s struggle for social justice. To create the work, whose title means “dreams,” Reyes collaborated with Latino youth from Baltimore and Langley Park, a nearby suburb of Washington, D.C. All of the installations are new this year except for two returning crowd favorites from the festival’s 2016 iteration—Tim Scofield and Kyle Miller’s “The Peacock,” and “The Pool [Reflect]” by Jen Lewin. Attendees will also be surrounded by performances—from dance to live music to puppet theater. On the festival’s final two nights, Squonk Opera will perform “Light Cycles” by creating double-decker, humanpowered cycles to promote sustainable power. Other high notes include

Before the festival opens, families can also swing by Baltimore’s National Aquarium. Home to 20,000 animals—including Calypso, a 500-pound green sea turtle—the aquarium will offer scavenger hunts and themed activities tying light to the aquatic world. Along with exploring the Blacktip Reef and watching flicks at the 4-D Immer-
sion Theater, guests can visit the Living Seashore, two touchpools with species native to the Mid-Atlantic. Although Light City’s epicenter is in the Inner Harbor, its Neighborhood Lights initiative involves surrounding neighborhoods that are creating an immersive community arts program and illuminated public project. Each of the eight neighborhoods—from Hampden to Station North—will feature a light installation reflecting its unique character. In Little Italy, you’ll find Kaiser Permanente’s “The Sweetness of Doing Nothing,” a canopy and fountain crafted from recycled water bottles. The neighborhood will also have a lantern-making workshop where participants repurpose recyclable materials into a canopy across High Street. The innovation at Light City doesn’t stop with the art—it also highlights creative cuisine and drinks. Along the BGE Light Art Walk, the festival will serve Asian

Located in Fell’s Point, Max’s Taphouse has been the go-to spot for suds for 30 years. This watering hole boasts a bevy of brews—102 beers on draft and more than 2,000 bottled options, to be exact. The knowledgeable staff, some of whom have been at Max’s for decades, is always happy to make recommendations. For a convenient—and picturesque—way to travel the city’s
waterfront neighborhoods, step aboard the newly redesigned Baltimore Water Taxi. BWT will offer extended hours during Light City, with service running until the end of each night’s programming. And with 17 landings, it can connect you to everywhere from Harbor Place to Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine. To see Light City from a different vantage point, book Monumental Helicopters’ “City Lights” tour. The night flight soars over the city, offering aerial views of the illuminated Inner Harbor. The Diné people, or Navajo as they are commonly called, are the largest of all recorded American Indian tribes. Their territory spans roughly 27,000 square miles and offers a bevy of ways to learn about their traditions firsthand. For nearly 5,000 years, different native peoples have occupied the red sandstone Canyon de Chelly. Today, Ancestral Puebloan ruins—built into the cliffs and along the canyon floor—stand in contrast to the modern Navajo homes and farms that surround them. For a bird’s-eye view, drive up to the Spider Rock Overlook to see the monolithic, 750-foot spire. Legend has it that the rock was home to Spider Woman, a female deity who first taught the Navajo women how to weave. An hour east of the Grand Canyon, Tuba City has the Explore Navajo Interactive Museum, which introduces visitors to the Navajo language, history, and ceremonial life. Highlights include pottery, ancient artifacts, and a Navajo hogan— a traditional dwelling made from wooden poles and mud. Next door, the Navajo Code Talkers Museum and Veterans’ Center details the tribe’s important role in World War II. Round out the trip with a visit to the Tuba City Trading Post, which has featured authentic American Indian arts and crafts, ranging from silver jewelry to sand paintings, since 1870.

The College Football Hall of Famer and former University of Tennessee head coach talks about his home state. Q: Where did you grow up? A: I'm a small-town guy from Winchester. Everybody knew everybody. Q: What was it like to coach at your alma mater? A: When I returned to UT as the offensive line coach, I had a senior, a true freshman, and three red shirt freshmen who had never played in 11:44 AM the offensive line. You talk about an
adjustment; we were horrible. My wife and I had just bought a house, and I said, “Vicky, don’t buy drapes because they’re going to fire me.” But the team made it through and grew up together. We’re still friends today. Q: When you look back, what’s the highlight of your coaching career? A: Truthfully, it's the experience that you have with the young men you coach. You get them as kids and they leave ready for the world. Q: Where do you go to grab a bite to eat in Knoxville? A: The Northshore Brassierie is a great place for everything from a cheeseburger to lamb chops. Q: What are you up to now? A: I help with the football program at East Tennessee State and am part of the President’s Counsel at UT. I’m also a partner at Natural Solutions for Life, which produces a supplement to help with joint pain. After playing football like I have and then coaching for 36 years, I’ve worn out my knees. Permitted Pueden usarse dentro del avión Small portable electronic devices (PEDs) such as tablets, e-readers, and smartphones weighing less than 2 pounds may be used in AIRPLANE mode at all times on domestic flights, unless a Crew Member indicates otherwise. A small PED may be held in hand, attached to a person, or placed in clothing or a seatback pocket. Devices and accessories may not block access to the aisle. Large PEDs such as laptops weighing 2 pounds or more must be stowed under the seat or in an overhead bin for taxi, takeoff, and landing. It is recommended that laptops be placed in a case when stowed under the seat. On international flights, all PEDs must be turned off during taxi, takeoff, and landing at airports outside the U.S. and its territories. Please use headphones for all audio and video. what do you look for in acting roles? I want the character to scare me. If I’m not scared, I’m not moved. With my role in Hidden Figures the fear was that, growing up, I was told math wasn’t for girls. I shied away from it. Now, I had to play this rocket scientist—a real living, breathing person— you think that’s not scary? As for my character in Empire, Cookie scares the average person. I didn’t know how she would be perceived. But the one thing about Cookie is that she unapologetically lives and walks in her truth. I think everyone wishes they could do that.
